Bipin Choudary’s Lapse of Memory is a jovial and light-hearted story written by the renowned author, and movie director, Satyajit Ray.

Bepin Choudhury, an aged man with a habit of visiting bookstores, meets Parimal Ghose, who claims to be an old acquaintance from a Ranchi trip, which Bepin doesn't remember.

Parimal provides personal details, confusing Bepin. When he checks with Dinesh Mukerji, Dinesh confirms the trip, intensifying Bepin's confusion about his memory lapse.

Worried about his supposed memory loss, Bepin consults Dr. Paresh Chanda, who advises him to visit Ranchi to possibly revive his lost memories.

Bepin visits Ranchi, but the trip doesn't help him recall any memories, leaving him more perplexed.

Upon returning, Bepin receives a letter from his friend Chunilal, revealing that the whole incident was a prank to get back at Bepin for not helping Chunilal when he needed a job.

Feeling guilty for neglecting Chunilal, Bepin lies to Dr. Chanda about regaining his memory and asks for a painkiller, hiding his emotional turmoil.

Ans: Bepin was scared about the reaction he might receive from Mr. Mukerji. If the whole incident from Ranchi turns out to be false, Mr. Mukerji would declare him insane. After the incident at the bookshop, he was constantly disturbed and he had no other means to ease his anxiety other than asking Mr. Mukerji but he decided to call him to reduce the embarrassment.

When the girl told him to eat the banana that she found in the garbage, he refused at first. However, he quickly realized that he was very hungry and therefore, ate it. Even though he found the place and even the girl very strange, he continued to walk along with her. He tried to understand why she collected rubbish. He knew that he had not come to the big city to collect rubbish; however, he adjusted to the circumstances and decided to do the same work till he found a better job.

Yes, Jaya was a brave and sensitive child with a sense of humour.

She was a ragpicker and knew how to live in the city. Jaya knew her way around Chennai, which is a fairly big city. Where Velu was extremely nervous and confused about crossing the busy street, Jaya dragged him through and crossed the street quickly. She was a brave girl. She knew from where to find food. She knew that one has to be careful to not get caught by the police.

Jaya was also a very sensitive and kind girl as she helped Velu in all possible ways. She understood that he had run away from home as she had seen many others like him. She also understood that he was hungry. She helped him cross the road and found him something to eat. Then, she also told him how he could earn his own money. She also gave him an empty sack and a pair of shoes for this purpose.

Jaya was also of a humorous nature. When she saw Velu sitting at the platform, she asked him if he was there to become rich. When Velu was not able to cross the road, she dragged him to the other side of the road and said “What do you think you’re doing? Grazing cows? If you stand around in the middle of the road like that, you’ll be chutney .” When Velu asked her if they were going to eat at the hall where the wedding was taking place, she replied “Hopes!” by shaking her thumb under his nose. They could never have been able to eat there. When she gave him a banana from the garbage, he was shocked and asked if they would eat that food. She replied wittily “ Chey ! What do you think I am? A dog? I only take untouched food.” When he asked her name, she said “Oho! So you’ve been following me around without even knowing my name.” She helped him throughout and kept answering his questions with a sense of humour.

What one throws away as waste may be valuable to others. Do you find this sentence meaningful in the context of this story? How?

Yes, this story shows that what one throws away as waste might be valuable to others. People throw away empty bottles, papers and broken glasses as waste because these items are not of use for them. Jaya and other children like her collect these items and other such things and earn a living by selling these to others. People throw away food that is extra or has gone rotten. At weddings, a lot of food is wasted and goes to the garbage bins. These poor children eat from the bins and satisfy their hunger. The old shoes and tattered clothes that people throw after use are of a big help to poor people such as these children. In the story, Velu’s feet were burning because of excessive heat. Jaya gave him an old pair of shoes, which did not have laces, so that his feet were somehow protected.

1. Read the following sentences carefully :

  • Birds fly in the air.
  • My brother flew to England last week.
  • I shall fly a kite on Sunday. –

In the first sentence the Verb ‘fly’ refers to the Present time, in the second sentence the Verb ‘flew’ refers to the action in the Past, while the Verb in the third sentence ‘shall fly’ refers to the Future.

2. The Tense of a Verb shows the time when an action takes place. There are three Tenses :

I. Present Tense II. Past Tense III. Future Tense

3. In order to show at what stage an action is, each of the three tenses has been sub-divided into four heads. These sub-divisions are—

I play I am playing I have played I have been playing
I played I was playing I had played I had been playing
I shall play I shall be playing I shall have played I shall have been playing

Thus, the tense of a verb does not show the time of an action or event alone. It shows the state of that action also.

I. The Present Tense

A. Simple Present Tense The Simple Present is used to express : (i) A habitual action (ii) A general truth (iii) What is happening (in exclamatory sentences only) (iv) An order or request.

(i) A habitual action : I go for a walk daily. He comes to school at 8 O’clock.

(ii) General truth : The sun rises in the east. Two and two make four.

(iii) What is happening : Here comes the chief guest !

(iv) An order or request : Obey your teachers.

B. Present Continuous Tense (Is/am/are + Verb + ing)

(i) In order to form the Present Continuous Tense, we add Present Participle to is, am or are. The Present Participle is formed by adding ‘ing’ to the first form of the verb. ‘Is’ is used with he, she, it or Third Person Singular Noun, ‘am is used with T and ‘are’ is used with we, you, they and plural Nouns. Examples: She is singing a song.

(ii) In Interrogative form, the helping verb is used before the subject. [Is/am/are + Subject + (Verb + ing)……….. ?] Examples : Are you going home ?

(iii) In Negative form, we add ‘not between the Principal Verb and the operative helping verb. [Subject + is/am/are + not + (Verb + ing) …] Examples: She is not weeping.

Uses of the Present Continuous Tense The Present Continuous Tense is used with the words—at this time, at present, at the moment, now, nowadays, still etc. and in the following cases :

(a) To describe an action in progress and/or the continuity of the action. The girls are singing a chorus.

(b) To describe an action in progress, but not necessarily at the time of speaking. India is exporting onions to the Middle East. What are you writing these days ?

(i) In the Present Perfect Tense the past participle (III) form of the verb is used with has or have. ‘Has’ is added with third person singular subjects, as—‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’ and ‘Have’ is added with T, ‘we’, ‘you, ‘they’ and plural nouns. He has won a prize. You have insulted me. I have taken the dose of medicine.

(ii) In Interrogative form [Has, have are placed before the subject.] (Has/have + Subject + III form of the Verb…?) Have they crossed the river ? Where have you seen my brother ?

(iii) In Negative form [‘not’ is used between the main verb and the helping verb.] (Subject + has/have + not + III form of the Verb…) She has not come yet. I have not received any information.

Uses of the Present Perfect Tense The Present Perfect Tense is used with the words : yet, as yet, already, just, just now, so far, since, ever since, presently, once, twice, thrice etc. and in the following cases :

(a) To express an action that has been recently completed. I have just received the letter.

(b) To describe an action the time of which is not given. The train has steamed in.

(c) To describe a past experience. I have seen this picture several times.

(d) To express an action that began in the Past and still continues. He has worked in this school for five years, (is still working)

In order to form the Present Perfect Continuous Tense, we put has been or have been before the Present Participle Form of the Verb ; as— It has been raining for two hours. I have been flying a kite since 2 O’clock.

(a) The Present Perfect Continuous Tense is used to describe an action that began in the Past, is still continuing and may extend into the Future ; as— She has been waiting for you for three hours. They have been playing cards since 10 A.M.

(b) This tense is also used to express an action in a sentence which begins with ‘For how long or ‘Since when’, as in— For how long have you been sitting here ? Since when has he been living in this house ?

(c) This tense is also used to express an action which began in the past and has been just completed. However, its result is visible in the present, as in— I have been studying since morning and I am much tired now. She has been washing the dishes for an hour and her clothes are dirty now. Note : Since is used fora point of time. For is used for a period of time.

II. The Past Tense

A. The Past Indefinite Tense Or The Simple Past Tense (Subject + II form of the Verb…)

In the Simple Past (Past Indefinite) Tense the second form of the Verb is used : as— He came here yesterday. ‘Did’ is used in the Interrogative and Negative sentences. ‘Did’ is also used to lay emphasis. Only the first form of the Verb is used with ‘did’.

(i) In Interrogative Sentences [‘did is placed before the subject and verb in first form after it ; as—] (Did + Subject + I form of the Verb…?) Did you show me your homework ?

(ii) In Negative Sentences [‘did not’ is put after the subject and first form of the verb is used thereafter : as—] (Subject + did + not + I form of the Verb…) I did not apply for leave. Exception—I never told a lie. (This sentence means—I did not ever tell a lie)

(iii) To lay emphasis I did try to solve the question but was not able to solve it.

Uses of the Past Indefinite Tense The Past Indefinite (Simple Past) Tense is used : (a) To express an action completed in the past with reference to the time of speaking. I saw many birds in the zoo. (b) To express habitual or regular action in the Past. Gandhiji always spoke the truth. (c) To express an event which occurred at a particular point in the Past. My father came back home yesterday. (d) To express an action which occupied a period of time in the Past, but is now ended. We lived in this house for ten years. (do not live now) I stayed at the Green Hotel for two months. (not staying now) (e) To express an action where some word, showing past action (yesterday, ago. last, etc.) is given in the sentence, as, He received your message yesterday. I passed the S.S.C. Examination last year.

Mark the correct use of the Past Indefinite Tense in the following sentences.

B. The Past Continuous Tense (Subject + was /were + I form of the Verb + ing…)

(i) The Past Continuous Tense denotes an action going on in the past. In order to form Past Continuous Tense we add Present Participle to was or were ; as— The train was running at full speed.

(ii) In Negative form [‘not’ is placed between the helping verb and the principal verb ; as—] (Subject + was/were + not + Verb + ing…) She was not weeping.

(iii) In Interrogative form [the helping verb is placed before the subject ; as—] (Was/were + Subject + Verb + ing + … ?) Were the sheep grazing in the field?

Uses of the Past Continuous Tense (i) The Past Continuous Tense is used to express an action that was happening in the Past at the time of speaking. The time of the action may or may not be mentioned. Examples: The old lady was crying at the top of her voice. They were not making a noise.

(ii) The use of this tense with Simple Past Tense denotes that the previous action was going on when the latter action took place; as— My mother was cooking the food when I reached home.

C. THE PAST PERFECT TENSE (Subject + had + III form of the Verb )

We often make mistakes while using the Past Perfect Tense. We use ‘had’ at random wherever we view ‘past action’ in a sentence in our mother-tongue. I had gone to Delhi yesterday. This sentence should be formed in Simple past. I went to Delhi yesterday. The structure of Past Perfect is— In order to form the Past Perfect Tense we use ‘had’ before the Past Participle (III) form of the Verb.

(i) In Interrogative form [‘Had is used before the subject] (Had + Subject + not + in form of the Verb + ……… ?) Had he left when you came ?

(ii) In Negative form [‘not is used after ‘had’] (Subject + had + not + III form of the Verb + ………… ) I had not seen you before.

Uses of the Past Perfect Tense (a) The Past Perfect Tense is used to express an action completed before another action took place ; as— When he came to me, I had posted the letter. (b) (i) It is also used to express an unfulfilled action in the past ; as— If she had worked hard she would have passed. (ii) It is also used to express an unfulfilled wish in the past ; as— I wish I had won the election. (c) To denote the action or event which has been completed before some point of time. By afternoon he had completed much work.

Use of Past Indefinite and Past Perfect Tenses in Time Clauses We can express time by using some ‘time-denoting’ Adverbs or through Adverbial clauses of Time. The combination of two past actions depends upon their mutual relevance. Examples: I had waited for my friend until he arrived. After he had sailed many days, the mariner reached the coast.

D. The Past Perfect Continuous Tense (Subject + had + been + Present Participle…)

(a) The Past Perfect Continuous Tense expresses an action that had been going on for some time in the past. In order to use this tense we use had been with Present Participle (ing) form of the verb. Examples: Children had been playing since morning.

(b) The Past Perfect Continuous Tense is also used to express an action that had been going on for some time before another action took place in the past ; as— Examples: They had been playing chess for two hours when I joined them. (i) In Interrogative form, ‘had precedes the subject and ‘been’ comes after the subject; as— Had he been quarrelling with you for some time ? (ii) In negative form, ‘not’ is placed after ‘had’ and before ‘been’ ; as— They had not been working on this project for many years.

III. THE FUTURE TENSE

A. The Simple Future/Future Indefinite Tense (Shall/ will + Verb) The Future Indefinite Tense is used to express the action or event which is likely to happen in Future. In this tense we use shall/will between the subject and the first form of the verb. Normally we use ‘shall with pronouns of first person (I, We). In the same way. we use ‘will with the pronouns of second person (you) and third person (he, she, it, they). (i) In Negative sentences ‘not’ is added after ‘shall/‘will as the case may be ; as— We shall not see the picture today. (ii) In Interrogative sentences ‘will’/‘shall’ is placed before the subject and first form of the verb after it ; as— Will you go to college today ?

B. THe Future Continuous Tense (Will/shall + be + Verb + ing) The Future Continuous Tense is used to express an event that is expected to take place in the normal course or at some time in the future ; as— We shall be playing a football match on Sunday. The new edition of this book will be coming out shortly. When I reach Calcutta, it will be raining heavily there. Will you be taking part in the debate ? (Interrogative) The farmers will not be watering the plants at this time. (Negative)

C. The Future Perfect Tense (Shall/will + have + III form of the Verb) (i) The Future Perfect Tense expresses an action which is expected to be completed by a certain time in the Future ; as— She will have covered half of her journey by Monday next. (ii) The Future Perfect Tense sometimes expresses the speaker’s belief that something has taken place. In such sentences it does not express the Future ; as— “You will have discussed the plans how to celebrate the function”, said my mother. (iii) It is also used for an action which at a given future time will be in the past; as— In two years’ time (i.e., two years from now) I shall have taken my degree.

Short Summary

The Best Christmas Present in the World is a touching story by Michael Morpurgo. The narrator buys an old desk and finds in it a letter written by an English soldier Jim Mcpherson to his wife Connie whom the narrator goes to meet and hand over the letter.  The letter has a touchy account of how the English soldiers and German soldiers wished each other ‘Happy Christmas”, celebrated the festival with real Christmas spirit where there was no place for conflict, hatred, and violence.  The letter was written on 26 December 1914 and Jim wrote in his letter that he would be back by the next Christmas as the incident between the two armies showed how soldiers from both sides wanted peace.  The narrator could not sleep the whole night, it was Christmas Eve, as he had intruded in someone’s privacy by reading the letter. In the morning he went to the address mentioned in the letter, finds the house in shatters due to fire, asked a neighbor and reached where Connie was. Connie was 101 years and she mistook the narrator as Jim and talked about her happiness on Jim’s arrival. It was the best Christmas present for her in the world.

The Tsunami Summary in English

The author went to a junk shop in Bridport. He noticed a rolltop desk. It was very old and made of oak. It was in a bad condition. It had burn-marks down one side. Since it was cheap, the author decided to buy it and get it repaired. He began working on it on Christmas Eve.

He removed the roll-top and tried hard to pull out the drawer. It had suffered much damage due to fire and water. The drawer was jammed. He hit it hard with his fist and pulled it out. He found a secret drawer underneath. He took out a small black tin box. There was a note on it that said: “Jim’s last letter, received January 25, 1915”.

The letter writer also wished to put it in her grave. Out of curiosity he opened the box. Inside it he found an envelope with the address: “Mrs. Jim Macpherson, 12 Copper Beeches, Bridport, Dorset.” The letter was dated Dec. 26, 1914. The letter had been written by Jim to his wife Connie. He was a soldier, set against the Germans during the First World War. Jim wrote to her that he was very happy because something wonderful had happened. The soldiers on both sides of the no man’s land were taking up positions in their trenches. It was Christmas morning, cold and frosty.

Jim saw the German soldiers waving a white flag. They were calling out the English soldiers to say Happy Christmas. It was a big surprise to be greeted like friends by the enemies. But it was true, not a trick. The English soldiers also wished them in return.

The leader said that they wanted to celebrate the festival. Jim was the office in command. He allowed his men to join the Germans. Grey coats and Khaki coats mingled in the middle. In the time of war, they were making peace. The German soldier who came first was named Hans Wolf. Before joining the army he used to play the cello in an orchestra. Jim had been a school teacher in Dorset. Hans lied that he knew Dorset well. In fact, he had read about that place in Hardy’s novel, Far from the Madding Crowd.

The soldiers from the rival camps smoked, laughed, drank and feasted. Hans said that he liked the marzipan, the sweet covering on Jim’s bread. Jim wrote in the letter, that he had never seen or imagined a Christmas Party like that. They played football also. Both agreed on one point. The countries should have better resolved their disputes by playing a football or cricket match because no one dies in a match whereas war leaves behind orphans and widows.

The game was finished, so did the drinks and cakes. Jim told Hans that they hoped to see families as soon as the fighting ended by Christmas next year.

The author put the letter back into the envelope and drove into Bridport. He meant to hand over the letter to Connie (Mrs. Macpherson). Connie was now 101 years old. Her house had caught fire, but she was saved. She was in a conservatory.

The author wished her ‘Happy Christmas’ and gave the letter to her. She recognised the writing of her husband and felt very happy. She mistook the author for Jim who had come home, as promised on Christmas. She kissed the author on the cheek and asked him to read the letter to her. She wanted to listen to the voice of her husband. She said that he (Jim) himself was the best Christmas present to her.

The Tsunami Summary in Hindi

लेखक ब्रिडपोर्ट में एक कबाड़ी की दुकान पर गया। उसे एक मेज दिख गई जिसका ऊपरी भाग खिसक जाता था। यह काफी पुरानी ओक की लकड़ी की बनी थी। यह बुरी स्थिति में थी। उस पर एक ओर जलने के दाग थे। चूँकि वह सस्ती थी, लेखक ने उसे खरीदकर मरम्मत करा लेने का विचार कर लिया। उसने वह काम क्रिसमस के एक दिन पूर्व शुरु किया।

उसने मेज का ऊपरी भाग हटाया और उसके दराज को बाहर खींचने का प्रयास किया। उस पर आग और पानी के कारण काफी खराबी आ चुकी थी। दराज फंसकर बंद था। लेखक ने उस पर अपना जोरदार मुक्का मारा और उसे बाहर खींचा। उसने एक गुप्त दराज उसमें नीचे देखी। उसने उसमें रखा हुआ एक छोटा-सा टीन का काला डब्बा निकाला। उस पर लिखा था: “जिम का अंतिम पत्र जिसे 25 जनवरी 1915 को प्राप्त किया गया था”। पत्र लेखक ने इच्छा व्यक्त की थी कि इस पत्र को उसकी कब्र में दफना दिया जाये। उत्सुकतावश लेखक ने डब्बा खोल लिया। अंदर एक लिफाफा था, उस पर पता लिखा था “मिसेज जिम मेक्फर्सन, 12 कॉपर बीचेज, ब्रिडपोर्ट, डॉरसेट”। पत्र में तारीख थी 26 दिसम्बर, 1914।

इस पत्र को जिम ने अपनी पत्नी कोनी को लिखा था। वह सैनिक था, और प्रथम महायुद्ध में वह जर्मनी के विरुद्ध लड़ रहा था। जिम ने लिखा कि वह बहुत खुश था क्योकि एक हैरान कर देने वाली घटना घटी थी। खाली पड़े बीच के स्थान के दोनों ओर सैनिकों ने खाइयों में अपना छिपने का स्थान बना रखा था। क्रिसमस की सुबह थी, ठंडी और तुषार वाली।

जिम ने जर्मन सैनिकों को श्वेत झण्डा लहराते देखा। वे अंग्रेज सिपाहियों को क्रिसमस की शुभकामना देने के लिए पुकार रहे थे। अंग्रेज सैनिकों ने भी उसी प्रकार से उनको अभिवादन किया। दुश्मन द्वारा मित्रों की तरह अभिवादन करना एक बड़ा आश्चर्य था। परन्तु यह सत्य था, कोई चाल नहीं। अंग्रेज सैनिक भी बदले में उनका अभिवादन कर रहे थे।

नायक ने कहा हम लोग तुम्हारे साथ मिलकर त्योहार मनाना चाहते हैं। जिम उच्च अधिकारी था। उसने अपने सैनिकों को जर्मन सैनिकों के साथ हाथ मिलाने की अनुमति दे दी। काले कोट तथा खाकी वर्दी वाले बीच के खाली क्षेत्र में मिले। युद्ध के दौरान वे सभी शांति का पाठ पढ़ रहे थे। सबसे पहले आने वाले जर्मन सैनिक का नाम था हंस वोल्फ। सेना में भर्ती होने से पूर्व वह एक वाद्ययंत्र वादक दल में जो सबसे आगे आया था, एकल यंत्र बजाया करता था। जिम डॉरसेट के एक स्कूल में शिक्षक था। हंस ने झूठ बोला कि वह डॉरसेट से भलीभांति परिचित है। वास्तव में उसने इस स्थान के बारे में हार्डी के उपन्यास ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ में पढ़ा था।

परस्पर विरोधी कैंप के सैनिकों ने धूम्रपान किया, मनोविनोद किया, मद्यपान किया तथा भोजन किया। हंस बोला मुझे तुम्हारे केक पर लगा मीठा मक्खन बहुत स्वादिष्ट लगा। जिम ने पत्र में लिखा कि उसने इस प्रकार की क्रिसमस पार्टी न कभी देखी और न ऐसी कल्पना की थी। उन्होंने फुटबाल भी खेला। दोनों इस विषय में एकमत थे कि देशों को अपने झगड़ों का हल फुटबाल या क्रिकेट मैच खेलकर खोजना चाहिये क्योंकि खेल मैच में कोई व्यक्ति मरता नहीं जबकि युद्ध अपने पीछे अनाथों और विधवाओं को छोड़ जाता है।

खेल समाप्त हुआ, उसी के साथ खाना पीना भी थम गया। जिम ने हंस को बोला कि उन्हें उम्मीद है कि अगले क्रिसमस तक जैसे ही युद्ध विराम होगा हम लोग अपने परिवार के पास पहुँच जायेंगे।

लेखक ने पत्र लिफाफे में रख दिया और ब्रिडपोर्ट की ओर चल दिया। वह चाहता था कि पत्र को कोनी (मिसेज मैक्फर्सन) को सौंप दे। कोनी अब 101 वर्ष की थी। उसके घर में आग लग गई थी पर उसे बचा लिया गया था। वह एक सुधार गृह में थी।

लेखक ने उसे ‘शुभ क्रिसमस’ बोला तथा पत्र सौंपा। महिला ने तुरंत अपने पति के अक्षरों को पहचान लिया तथा बहुत खुश हो गई। उसने लेखक को ही गलती से अपना पति जिम समझ लिया जो वायदे के अनुसार क्रिसमस पर घर लौटा था। उसने लेखक को चूमा और उसीसे पत्र पढ़कर सुनाने को कहा। वह तो अपने पति की आवाज सुनना चाहती थी। वह बोली कि वह (जिम) स्वयं ही उसके लिए सबसे बड़ा क्रिसमस उपहार था।

I think this site is fantastic and it’s easy to use 🙂 It’s nice that for the reading comprehension worksheets there are multiple choice and long response questions, as students need practice answering harder questions.

I teach a nursing assistant course. I came across your very helpful site while looking for a way to determine incoming students’ reading comprehension level. What grade would they have to score to be considered competent at that grade level? Thanks!

These worksheets shouldn’t really be used to evaluate a student’s reading level. Rather, they should be used with students whose reading levels are known. If you know that a student is reading at a 6th-10th grade level, these 8th grade worksheets are probably appropriate for him or her. I’m sorry that I currently have no diagnostic test available. Perhaps I will devise one someday. Best wishes!

Yeah, this is an interesting situation.

I’ve thought about putting up a 99 cent annual paywall over the answer keys to prevent students from accessing them, but decided that it was a bad idea.

Mainly because motivated students use the site too, as well as cheaters, and shouldn’t motivated students be able to check their work?

Not to mention that a resourceful student can always use the Internet to find the answers to their homework and “workaround” the learning experience, so to speak.

I’m all for making it harder for cheaters, but not to the point where it cripples the learning experiences of those with sincere intentions.

Any one else have any thoughts on this?

I just have to echo all the comments here. This is THE most helpful site I have ever found for teaching reading comprehension at a variety of levels. These are not boring and are not so extensive as to intimidate reluctant readers. You are an absolute life saver!!! Thank you!
