Important Notes:

As a tourism and hospitality student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing tourism and hospitality theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.

The field of tourism and hospitality is vast and interrelated with many other academic disciplines like civil engineering, construction, law, engineering management, healthcare, mental health, artificial intelligence, physiotherapy, sociology, management, marketing, and nursing . That is why it is imperative to create a project management dissertation topic that is particular and sound and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic; it is the basis of your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong: your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in  writing your dissertation as you may end up in a cycle of rejection at the very initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

While developing a research topic, keeping our advice in mind will allow you to pick one of the best tourism and hospitality dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please take a look at some of our sample tourism and hospitality dissertation topics to get an idea for your dissertation.

Tourism management is the discipline that deals with the generalised management along with entrepreneurial, specialised and practical skills and competencies required for effective and efficient outcomes for recreation and leisure travel. Tourism is the fastest growing industry globally that has direct and indirect implications on economic, social and political indicators. In order to maximise the advantages and minimise the disadvantages from tourism development, the discipline has also included the perspectives of social sustainability and policy makers. Traditionally, the countries that have natural comparative advantage were seen as the focal point of the tourism industry, however the economic relationship of the industry has led the countries lacking such comparative advantage to use their history, heritage, culture, festivals and mega-events to promote and develop tourism. Student's Guide to Writing Dissertations and Theses in Tourism Studies and Related Disciplines

Author: Tim Coles, David Timothy Duval and Gareth Shaw Edition: First Publisher: Routledge Pages: 246 Price: £85.00 and £24.99 ISBN: 9780415460187, 60194 and 9780203078785 (e-book)

Written by three renowned researchers in the field, this book offers students “a suite of practical advice, guidance and suggestions for the preparation, execution, writing and completion of dissertations in tourism studies (and related disciplines)”. It is intended primarily for undergraduate students, of all nationalities, studying in countries whose higher education systems use Anglo-American models. Although its content is most relevant to those in the social science field, I would gladly recommend it to my physical geography students as it offers sound advice on the fundamental “how to” questions they will encounter, whether they adopt qualitative or quantitative approaches.

Its 15 chapters are structured logically into four sections that track the phases of dissertation preparation, proposal, production and post- production. A brief introductory chapter outlines the academic purpose of a dissertation and highlights the ethos and structure of the book. The preparatory section (chapters 2-5) concerns itself with defining a research problem and establishing study parameters. As it does so, it introduces the nature of the dissertation, topic selection, and early literature-related and methodological considerations. Chapters 6-9 comprise the proposal section, which considers (in an especially useful chapter) the production of an effective research proposal and the development of an efficient programme of work, including health and safety, and ethical considerations. Chapters 10-13 form the heart of the book and relate to dissertation production. These chapters highlight the reciprocal relationship between student and dissertation adviser, and explain issues of data collection, analysis and interpretation, before detailing the structure of the dissertation. Chapters 14 and 15 cover post-production activities of self-review and summative assessment. The authors adopt an informal writing style that addresses the student reader directly, serving to impart confidence, demystify the research process and encourage project ownership from the outset. Each chapter clarifies key guiding principles, offers good and bad examples drawn from the authors’ own experience, and asks questions of students to encourage them to chart their progress and make appropriate decisions throughout their research journey.

This textbook works for me for three important reasons. First, it underlines that a dissertation is composed of common components that can be managed discretely and successfully, but which are linked by a clear and robust set of aims and objectives.

Second, there is continual emphasis on and support for students’ self- assessment and improvement of their work.

Finally, it communicates all the salient messages I tend to find myself repeating to my students. These include the importance of having aims and objectives firmly established before commencing empirical work, that skimping on your dissertation proposal is a false economy, and that results do not speak for themselves. In short, I have no doubt that this book will become a key reference manual for dissertation preparation.

Who is it for? Undergraduate students undertaking their first substantial piece of independent research, but it is also relevant as a refresher text for master’s-level and perhaps even doctoral-level students.

Presentation: The accessible and engaging chapters open with a box of intended learning outcomes and end with chapter summaries and progress checklists. Figures are used selectively to offer simple and effective visual aids.

Would you recommend it? I highly recommend this text…and I am a physical geographer. It should be read by every dissertation student and adviser.

"Around the world every year many thousands of students have to complete dissertations or theses as part of their undergraduate or masters studies in tourism and related subjects. Often the dissertation or thesis represents the culmination of their programme as a substantial piece of self-directed work. More than just a means to consolidate their final grade, it is also an exciting chance to conduct intensive research on a topic of their choosing. It can also be a gateway to further periods of study as well as job offers and future career paths. Yet for all these reasons, the dissertation is viewed by many students as a tricky challenge. This book intends to take the stress and anxiety out of doing a dissertation in tourism studies and related disciplines. The dissertation process is examined from the germination of an idea to the submission, presentation and assessment of the final document. We offer a framework for conducting dissertations in the English-speaking world which students can adopt to varying degrees in their research at the undergraduate and masters levels. We aim to debunk the popular myths and common pitfalls of doing a dissertation. Rather than view the dissertation as a single, overwhelming project, the dissertation is presented as a series of more modest, manageable yet crucially inter-linked tasks that all students can successfully complete through effective time management"--

Field trips may best be viewed as a form of short-term experiential learning offering meaningful experiences that play an extremely crucial role in successful educational initiatives. The study of field trips has largely been overlooked by education-related literature that generally focuses on classroom, text-based, and, more recently, computer- or electronic media-based learning. Within the tourism context, only 2% of the literature is associated with education and training. In the light of this literature gap, this study examines the perceived values of field trips through the eyes of tourism students. The sample was a group of tourism-major students who recently went on an international field trip in partial fulfillment of the course requirements. Online survey was employed to collect data which were then analyzed using both descriptives and content analysis. The findings were in accord with those of previous studies, promoting the five key values of field trips. The study confirmed the importance of incorporating field trips in the curriculum not for the sole purpose of knowledge acquisition or enhancement but also for students’ personal and social growth.

Meet the mellon fellows: dr. meagan harden.

Headshot of a white woman with long brown hair wearing a floral dress

Dr. Meagan Harden

University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa PhD, Geography and Environment

Host Site: Maritime Washington National Heritage Area Fellowship Title: Tribal Maritime Heritage and Cultural Tourism in Washington State Project Description: Dr. Harden will focus on collaboration and research with three Seattle-area Tribes to support better public understanding of, engagement with, and appreciation for Indigenous maritime heritage in the region. Working with selected Tribal partners and archival resources, Dr. Harden will investigate and document existing Tribal maritime heritage resources and their histories and place them into a broader context of cultural heritage tourism in the region.

A political and cultural geographer by training, Dr. Meagan Harden explores archival collections, landscapes, and oral histories to uncover stories about how people, places, and power interact. After completing a B.A. in Environmental Sustainability, an M.A. in International Studies, and a graduate certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Oklahoma, Meagan traded her landlocked Oklahoma upbringing for the salty shores of Oʻahu in the Hawaiian Islands. As a doctoral student in the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Department of Geography and Environment, Meagan navigated between chilly archives and warm conversations in Honolulu, D.C., and the Republic of Palau, exploring competing political representations of islands and oceans. Meagan’s experiences living and working in Pacific Islands transformed her understanding of the ocean as not simply a physical space, but a spiritual, cultural, and life-sustaining entity as well. Beyond her academic endeavors, Meagan is an amateur outrigger canoe paddler, an adoring auntie, and a voracious devourer of stories in all forms.

Tell us about your research interests!

With their churning currents, cresting waves, and awesome capaciousness, oceanic spaces lie at the heart of my current research trajectory. I am interested in how people connect through and across oceanic spaces, and how those same oceanic spaces facilitate or thwart political projects. My dissertation, titled "Island Empire: The Hidden Political Geography of American Expansion in the Pacific" interrogates the political and legal trajectories of US militarism in the Pacific Ocean from the early twentieth century to present.

What are you most excited about as you begin your fellowship?

I am thrilled to contribute to a more comprehensive history of maritime cultural heritage, including cultural practices that have sustained life since long before European encounters. I look forward to collaborating with tribal nation partners across the Maritime Washington National Heritage Area to ensure that historical accounts resound with Indigenous voices.
