Leisure by William Davies – Summary, Explanation and Solved Questions

Summary of the poem ‘leisure’.

The poem Leisure by William Davies conveys a wonderful message about how we are busy with our own lives and have little time to enjoy our surroundings and nature. He blamed people in this poem for the fact that we are like a machine and run every day without knowing the little information about our world.

The Poet says that our life is useless if it is full of worries and if we have no time to stand and look at charming scenes of nature. The Poet says that we are so busy that we have no time to stand for some time under the dark, deep shadow of trees in the forest. We pass by the jungle without looking at these natural objects. The life of animals like cows and sheep is better than our life. They have a lot of time to spend in the company of nature. We have no time to see how squirrels hide their nuts in the grass. To experience all these joys we need time. But we suffer with the problem of the lack of time. We have no time to look at the fresh and clear waters of streams in the daylight when rays of the sun fall on the waves of water in streams. It looks as if the stars are twinkling in the sky. We have no time to look at the beauty of a woman. The Poet personifies beauty as a dancing girl with a smile. He has no time to watch her feet and note the movement in her dance. He has time to look at her smile and appreciate it. The Poet brings out the quality of her smile. He says that her smile is moving slowly. It begins with her eyes. Moving slowly it reaches her lips. This movement makes her smile more charming. But we need time to note the movements and charms of her smile, but we have no time to do so. By citing all these examples, the poet shows his disgust over man’s way of living in which he has no time for leisure. At the end of the poem, the poet repeats the opening lines to give more stress to his idea. He says:

Explain with Reference to the Context:

Reference to Context:-

The Poet says that our life is useless if it is full of hurries and worries. It is useless if we have no time to stand and look at the beautiful things of nature. Nature is perhaps the most beautiful and precious gift of God given to man, but modern man has no time to enjoy it. Modern man wastes all his time in pursuit of material objects. He is so busy that he has no time to stand under the deep shade of a tree and feel its coolness. The Poet says that the life of animals is better than that of man because they can stand under the shade of a tree and enjoy the beauties of nature. But the life of modern man is totally useless.

Streams full of stars, like at night:”

The Poem expresses the poet’s discontentment with the lifestyle of the modern man. Modern man suffers from the problem of lack of time. Poet says that when he passes through dark, deep and lovely forest, he has no time to look at it. He has no time to look at how squirrels hide their nuts in grass. The streams look very beautiful in the daylight. The movement of waves breaks the rays of the sun into a starry pattern as they fall on the waves of fresh water in the stream. This scene looks as if the stars are shining in the sky. But we have no time to look at all this. We miss the little joys which nature provide to us.

The lines quoted above have been taken from the poem ‘Leisure’ written by W.H. Davies. The poet in this poem expresses his deep sense of pain over the modern man’s inability and indifference in responding to the beauties of nature because he lacks time. The Poet says that the life of modern man is full of hurries and worries. Modern man is so much after the material thing that he has no time left for himself. The poet says that our life is useless if we have no time to look at the quiet charms of nature.

Modern man has no time to enjoy life and nature. He has no time to look at the beautiful woman and appreciate her beauty. In these lines, the poet personifies beauty as a dancing girl with smiling eyes. He has no time to watch her feet and note the movements of her dance. He has no time to see how her smile starts with the eyes and spreads to her lips. In the end, the poet repeats the opening lines to stress the central idea of the poem. The Poet says that our life is useless if it is full of worries. It is worthless if we have no time to enjoy the beauties of nature.

Q.1. What is the impact of worry on our life?

Ans.: With the description of the beauty of dancing girl the poet also describes the quality of her smile. The Poet says that the movement in the smile of the dancing girl is very slow. It starts with her beautiful eyes. From eyes, it spreads slowly to her lips. This slow movement of the smile makes it more expressive and charming and also enhances the beauty of the dancing girl.

Q.1. Sum up in your own words the philosophy of life outlined in the poem ‘Leisure’.

Ans.: ‘Leisure’ is a highly philosophical poem written by W.H. Davies. The poem is titled ‘Leisure’ which means a time of rest, a time in which we are free from all kinds of hurry and worry. The title itself indicates the philosophy of life summed up in the poem.

Nature is a beautiful gift of God to us. But modern man is busy all the time and has no time left to enjoy and appreciate the beauties of nature. The Poet says that modern man looks worried all the time. Worry is just like a worm that keeps gnawing the spirit of a person and won’t allow a person to enjoy life. Our life is useless if we have no time if it is full of worries and we have no time to stand and look at nature. The Poet says that modern man has become too materialistic. He runs all the time after material things.

Q.2. What kind of beauty of nature is described in the poem?

All these are the beauties of nature but the modern man has no time to enjoy all these joys. The Poet expresses his deep dissatisfaction over modern man’s indifference and insensitiveness in responding to the beauties of nature. Poet says that our life is meaningless if we have lost our sense of beauty of nature.

How I Spend My Leisure Time Essay

I admit that I am a very busy person, but I still believe in finding time to unwind and do enjoyable things. I intentionally block off time for leisure in my calendar. I also make it a point to aside resources and plan meticulously to ensure I get maximum relaxation from it.

Leisure is important to mental and physical wellness and should be taken seriously. It is a conscious decision I make to ensure that I am able to experience it regularly. Taking time out renews my vigor to tackle the challenging tasks I come across daily, as I am able to take breaks to reflect on a few issues about life. I mostly plan my leisure time on the weekends so that I can make space for my family and friends.

This is a short description of how I spend my leisure breaks.

How I Make My Free Time Count

My favorite way to spend my leisure time would be to hang out with my friends at the beach. I enjoy the cool breeze from the ocean and watching people have fun on the shore. Walking along the shores of the beach calms my inner chaos. Occasionally, I collect seashells on the beach and bring them to my siblings. Most of these outdoor activities highly depend on how favorable the weather is.

I also make the effort to make calls to friends I am unable to physically visit and check in on. Sometimes, the walks alone can take up my whole afternoon.

Other times, I like listening to the music albums of my favorite artists as I stroll along the beach. When the weather is hot, I like swimming on the beach or joining my friends to go fishing in deeper waters. Recently, I tried scuba diving and I liked the experience. I hope that I get to try it again soon. The breathtaking view of the reef is amazing.

Sometimes, the weather confines me indoors, but that does not mean I cannot have a good leisure break.

If I am having my leisure getaway indoors, I like trying out new recipes and different cuisines from all over the world. Being busy in the kitchen trying out new dishes is enjoyable, to say the least. The meals don’t always turn out the way I expect them to, but the experience is always fun for me.

Alternatively, I like reading non-fiction books, particularly those that talk about historical events, while relaxing on the couch. I like doing this with soft jazz playing in the background as I peruse through the pages.

At times, I also go to the cinemas and theaters and catch up on the latest movies and plays with friends. There are times when I just want to stay at home and catch up on my go-to shows. I like playing dance games competitively with my brother especially when he is in town. Although he is a better dancer than I am, we both enjoy the dance and have fun together.

Giraffes Standing on Grass Field Surrounded by Plants

I also travel to Africa annually and go on safaris or hike in the mountains. The experience is always great – from socializing with people of different cultures to watching animal wildlife in their natural habitat. The days I spend in Africa leave indelible memories in my mind and encourage me to save up to return and experience more.

The activities I mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. I really like making the most out of my leisure breaks. All these experiences and memories push me to invest in rest.

I don’t know how you make use of your spare time, but I hope that you are using it well. It could simply be a matter of engaging in your hobbies, spending time with loved ones, soaking in nature, or even reading books. As long as it makes you feel happy and recharged by the time the next week rolls in, it is worth doing.

Different people have different kinds of preferences when it comes to maximizing their free time. There are so many activities to choose from – so there’s no excuse not to indulge in getaways for yourself.

Essay About A Leisure Time Activity

What do you do when you have so much free time that you can actually take extended time off?

I have had the blessing of enjoying a lot of free moments lately and it has given me the opportunity to get involved in the many things that give me joy. One of them is reading novels. I am a staunch fan of murder mysteries. I can never get enough breathers to go through them during a busy week at school, so my collection has been gathering dust at home. I have recently been able to finish two books each weekend, and I’m really enjoying it.

Another activity that I love doing is to write down my plans for the future. I don’t just mean plans for the next year. I like envisioning myself five or ten years from where I am and dreaming of what I’ll be able to accomplish by then.

Finally, I like playing games and indulging in recreational activities. Board games are a guilty pleasure for me. I recently rediscovered my love for classic Monopoly and word puzzles and have been challenging my family and friends for intense rematches on weekends.

What Are Popular Ways To Spend Leisure Time?

There are plenty of ways to wind down in your spare moments. There are those who get involved in competitive sports. Others want something more relaxing and simply hang out with family. More adventurous people travel to other parts of the world to experience and soak in another culture. Others write down their ideas. There are a rare few who spend days in the library looking to expand their knowledge on a certain topic or subject of interest. Then there are the more fun, casual, and popular group activities, such as karaoke, cocktails, hotel stays, and pampering trips.

Why Is Leisure Time Important?

Making space to relax and the wind is essential in making sure you can still excel in the other areas of your life. People say that rest is actually a life strategy. You don’t necessarily rest because you are lazy and don’t want to deal with your obligations. You get to rest for the ultimate good of those activities. It almost seems counterproductive, for example, to do a catnap the night before a heavy deadline. But ten minutes of sleep can actually re-energize your brain and refuel your creative juices so that you can power through the night and finish that requirement. Getting those breathers for yourself also protects you from burnout, which is a common ailment in today’s busy world where everything demands your time and attention. It gives you fresh starts, especially when you feel uninspired and stuck.

Essay on Leisure | Leisure Essay for Students and Children in English

Essay on Leisure: Life may be considered an interval between birth and death. Life, according to an Arabian proverb, is composed of two parts, that which is past-a dream, and that which is to come-a wish.

What is this life full of care? We have no time to stand and stare. -W.H. Davies

Long Essay on Leisure 500 Words in English

Below we have given a long essay on Leisure of 500 words is helpful for classes 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and Competitive Exam Aspirants. This long essay on the topic is suitable for students of class 7 to class 10, and also for competitive exam aspirants.

Knowing that life is a temporary phase of eternity, no one knows when the journey of our life will be over. It is like the journey in the caravan of olden days. In those days, when the caravan was on the road, a bell rang continuously. When the bell stopped ringing, the caravan also stopped, so, no one knows in life when the bell of the caravan of life will cease to ring and the journey will be over.

What is in our power to do is only this. We should live our life properly in a selfless way. God has given us this gift of life with a purpose and that purpose is not to squander it aimlessly but to fulfill our duties sincerely and truthfully.

It takes all kind of people to make the world. There are those who use every minute of their life sensibly and nobly and there are those who waste it. Unfortunately, the latter outnumbers the former. There are men and women who still live today in people’s memory and are remembered with love and reverence for their noble deeds. There are those also, who are remembered with hatred and fear for they had adopted destructive measures to become rulers of the world to satisfy their greed and ambition for power and wealth. History is the witness, that great men like Abraham Lincon, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Ram Mohan Rai, Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Swami Vivekanand, Sardar Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Shekh Mujeebur Rahman changed the course of their countrymen’s lives in such a way and brought peace and happiness in others lives that life itself revers them. They will remain alive in the memories of their people and the whole world. Quite contrary to such great men, there have been men like Hitler, Mussolmi, Stalin, Saddam Husain, Idi Amin, terrorists like Osama bin Laden, Abu Baghdadi, Dawood Ibrahim and many such others who are also remembered by the world but with hatred and fear.

Now think of the lives of common men. Nowadays succumbing to the waves of time, they are also busy participating in the rat race of modern life and have made their life so, that they don’t have any time of leisure left. They have not a single moment in their life to rest, to enjoy the beauty of nature and be happy. They have forgotten to enjoy the small joys of life. There is no peace, harmony and contentment in their lives. The desire, the ambition to reach the top and be number one, has made their life hell. They have forgotten everything related to love friendship, peace, contentment and harmony. Life’s number one lesson that we live in deeds not years is forgotten. They want to become millionaires in a day. They don’t remember that Rome was not built in a day and those who work hard, they take it to the excess. If they have learnt to labor, they want the result of their labor within a day, they have yet to learn the virtue of patience. Small pleasures of life and the morals of humanity, love, friendship and compassion have been sent to oblivion. We should remember that we should try to live for the benefit of others.

Zimmerman has summed up the life of man in the very balanced and wise way: “There appears to be greater desire to live long than to live well. Measured by man’s desires, he cannot live long enough. Measured by man’s good deeds, he has not lived long enough, measured by his evil deeds, he has lived too long.”

There is no cure for birth and death, save to enjoy the interval. The dark background that death supplies brings out the tender colours of life in all their purity. While we try to enjoy life, we must never neglect the fact that the shaping of our life is in our own hands. It is a thing of beauty or a thing of shame as we ourselves make it. We should live as if we expected to live for a hundred years but might die tomorrow, and still achieving, still pursuing learn to labor and to wait.

Feature image of Short Essay on the Use and Abuse of Leisure

Short Essay on the Use and Abuse of Leisure in 100 Words

A person needs to take a break every once in a while and enjoy some leisure time. Many people use their leisure time to pursue their hobbies like painting, gardening, dancing, playing musical instruments or creating something new. Many others like to take a walk in the park or go to fun places.

Some prefer just resting on their beds to relax their body and mind. Using leisure time to do things that one enjoys is amazing. However, many people abuse it by engaging in activities like drinking alcohol, doing drugs, gambling, or just gossiping about unnecessary things and idling away. This doesn’t do the person any good. One should always use their leisure time and not abuse it.

Short Essay on the Use and Abuse of Leisure in 200 Words

When we do the same work continuously for days, weeks and months, life becomes very monotonous and boring. As life becomes dull, we begin to lose our passion for work and even life itself. Hence, it is important to take a break every once in a while and enjoy some leisure time.

Different people like to spend their free time in different ways. Many people pursue their hobbies like painting, singing, dancing, baking, cooking, gardening or playing musical instruments. Many others like to take a walk in the park, go on drives or visit new places. Some people like to spend their free time catching up with their friends and family members.

There are yet others who prefer resting and giving their bodies the necessary relaxation. A lot of people use their leisure time to learn new things and develop new skills. However, some people abuse it as well. They engage in activities like gambling, betting, drinking alcohol and doing drugs. Even the people who spend their free time gossiping about unnecessary and negative things are only wasting their time.

Leisure time should be used to do things that relax our body and mind or are productive in other ways. We should not abuse it like that doesn’t do us any good.

Short Essay on the Use and Abuse of Leisure in 400 Words

When we sit in the same place, in the same office and do the same work continuously for days, weeks and months, life becomes very monotonous and boring. In such a setting, it is easy to lose interest in the work that we are doing and in life itself. Hence, it is important to take a break every once in a while and enjoy some leisure time.

Different people like to spend their free time in different ways. Many people pursue their hobbies like painting, singing, dancing, baking, cooking, gardening or playing musical instruments. Some watch news or documentaries to keep themselves updated. Many housewives use their free time to try new recipes or to do some sewing and knitting. Children usually like to go outside, play with their friends or watch funny and educational programmes.

Many people like to take a walk in the park, go on drives or visit new places. Some like to spend their free time catching up with their friends and family members. There are yet others who prefer resting and giving their bodies the necessary relaxation. A lot of people use their leisure time to learn new things and develop new skills. Many love to spend their free time selflessly helping the people in need and doing charity work like feeding stray animals and giving free education to children living in slums. However, some people abuse it as well.

Those who spend their free time gossiping about other people and unnecessary things, simply waste their time. People who idle away, spend hours watching television shows that promote fights and negativity or engage in troublesome behaviour are also doing themselves more harm than good.

Many people waste their leisure time drinking alcohol, smoking, doing drugs, gambling and betting. This only harms them in the long run. Many people do not rest during their free time and instead continue working, trying to make more and more money. One can easily get exhausted and damage their health if one does not allow themselves to rest properly.

Everyone needs a break in their daily life. This break should be used to relax our bodies and minds. Spending time doing things we like and things that make us happy can help us feel refreshed and recharged. However, whether we use our leisure time positively or negatively is dependent on us. We should always do something relaxing and productive during our free time.

Leisure, William Henry Davies: Summary & Analysis

"Leisure" by William Henry Davies presents a contemplation on the nature of life and the importance of finding moments of stillness and reflection. Through vivid imagery and succinct language, the poem highlights the idea that a life consumed by busyness and care can lead to a lack of appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the world around us.

What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty's glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this is if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.

Critical Analysis

"Leisure" explores the idea that a life consumed by constant worries and responsibilities can lead to a lack of appreciation for the simple, natural beauties that surround us. The poem's succinct structure and vivid imagery emphasize the contrast between the hurried pace of life and the tranquil moments of observation and contemplation.

The opening lines, "What is this life if, full of care, / We have no time to stand and stare," immediately pose the central question of the poem. The use of "stand and stare" suggests the act of mindful observation and contemplation that is often neglected in a busy life.

The poem then proceeds to list various natural scenes that go unnoticed due to the lack of time for observation. The imagery of standing "beneath the boughs" and watching sheep or cows emphasizes the stillness and presence of nature.

The reference to squirrels hiding nuts and streams appearing like "skies at night" creates a sense of wonder in the everyday world, which often goes unnoticed due to the haste of life.

The stanza "No time to turn at Beauty's glance, / And watch her feet, how they can dance" captures the fleeting nature of beauty and the missed opportunities to appreciate it fully.

The final lines reinforce the poem's message by stating that a life filled with constant concerns and no time for reflection is a "poor life." The phrase "stand and stare" is repeated, underscoring the poem's call for moments of pause and contemplation.

"Leisure" serves as a reminder of the need to find balance in life and to take time to appreciate the small wonders that often go unnoticed in the rush of daily existence.

"Leisure" by William Henry Davies emphasizes the importance of taking moments of stillness and observation in a busy world. The poem encourages readers to find time to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds them and to avoid a life consumed by constant care and busyness.

Essay on Importance of Leisure For Students & Children

We are Sharing an Essay on Importance of Leisure in English for students. In this article, we have tried our best to provide a Short Importance of Leisure Essay for Class 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 in 100, 250, 300, 400, 500 words.

Essay on Importance of Leisure For Students & Children

Leisure is very important for a healthy life. We must rest for a few hours every day. We must have some holidays occasionally. We must enjoy a good number of holidays annually.

One cannot live long if one does not follow this rule. Our energy gets wasted while doing work. This energy is restored only if we have proportionate leisure. Not only our body, but even our brain also needs rest and leisure. It gets rest only when we divert our attention from the daily profession we are doing to some worth enjoying job.

Leisure is all the more important these days. Man has become very busy. If poor, he has to keep himself engaged to make both ends meet. If rich, he is after making more and more money. He wants more and more comforts. He wants to have more and more amenities of life. In this race of materialism, life has become very busy.

It is with the progress in a civilisation that life has become so busy. Our forefathers had enough leisure. They enjoyed more and more leisure than work. Even today, life is busier in advanced countries. In India, there are very many people who have enough leisure to stroll aimlessly. They have enough leisure to pass remarks on passersby. On one hand, leisure is essential.

On the other hand, it is a problem. The problem arises as to how it is to be utilised or enjoyed. If one whiles away one’s leisure, the devil will take hold of him. It is an established fact that an empty brain is the devil’s workshop.

So, education must aim at teaching men the right and proper use of leisure. It must equip every person mentally. This can be done only when their attention is diverted from idle gossips to some healthy activities. The man should be taught to do some such thing as may help him in making him cultured. This can be done in the schools through co-curricular activities. It is through such activities these healthy habits may be developed among the students.

Leisure by William Henry Davies

‘Leisure’ by William Henry Davies highlights the importance of leisure in one’s life and how the hectic modern life has alienated one from nature.

In this poem, Davies talks about the importance of being close to nature. The poem begins with some examples of what one can do to exhale the stress out of one’s body. If one only cares about the body, forgetting about how beautiful and soothing nature is, it will lead that person to spiritual poverty. Moreover, the poet makes use of imagery to portray the beauty of nature. All one has to do is to “stand and stare” at the simple activities of different creatures living close to nature.

The meaning of the poem is not hard to decode. The simplicity of the poem gives readers an idea of how simple things can touch a person deeply. Moreover, the title of the poem, ‘Leisure, ‘ highlights the fact that one should have to make time for one’s mind and soul. A person has to invest that time in simple activities. The poet provides some solutions that one can follow to keep his or her mind healthy. Moreover, the significance of the proximity to nature is the main idea of the poem.

‘Leisure’ consists of seven couplets . It means there are a total of 14 lines in this poem. The poet uses a regular rhyme scheme . The rhyme scheme of the poem is AA BB, and it goes on like this. As an example, in the first couplet , “care” and “stare” rhyme together. Apart from that, there is also regularity in the metrical scheme of the poem. There are a total of 8 syllables in each line, and the stress falls on the second syllable of each foot. It means each line contains four iambs . For this reason, the overall poem is composed in iambic tetrameter .

Literary Devices

Davies begins this poem with the use of irony . In the first line, the poet uses a rhetorical question . The following line contains irony. In phrases such as “stand and stare” and “beneath the boughs,” the poet uses alliteration . After the first couplet, each couplet begins with the phrase “No time.” The poet uses this repetition for the sake of emphasis. In the line, “And stare as long as sheep or cows,” he uses a simile . There is a metaphor in “Streams full of stars,” and it is compared with the “skies at night.” Moreover, there is a synecdoche in the phrase “Beauty’s glance.” The poem also contains personification and epigram as well.

Davies’ poem, ‘Leisure,’ presents several themes, such as modernity, simplicity, spirituality, nature, and, most importantly, leisure. The most important theme of the poem is, as said earlier, leisure. Throughout this work, the poet highlights the importance of leisure in one’s life. Thereafter, another important theme of the poem, modernity, gets fused into the body implicitly. Here, the poet expresses how modernity keeps modern people separated from nature. Apart from that, this poem is a celebration of simplicity and simple activities that keep one’s spirit alive. Such simple activities lead one to the path to spirituality.

Analysis of Leisure

Lines 1–4.

What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows.

In this poem, Davies talks about living a life that is “full of care.” One has to understand the meaning of this phrase before moving to the next line. Through this phrase, the poet refers to a person whose life is busy mostly with necessities meant only for the body. Hence, they don’t have enough time to work on their mind. The poet says they are so busy that they don’t even have the time to simply “stand” and “stare” at the simple things of nature. In the next couplet, the poet says in modern times, people have no time to stand beneath the boughs and stare as long as the sheep or cows.

Lines 5–8

No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

In the following couplets, Davies talks about what modern humans avoid due to the lack of time in their busy schedules. It can also be true that they don’t even care about such things. But, the poet cares. In the first couplet of this section, he says people have no time to see the woods when they pass through it. People don’t even know where squirrels hide their nuts in the grass. Thereafter, the poet refers to the streams that gleam in the daylight, like stars in the “skies at night.” This section reflects how people have detached themselves from nature. If one just takes a leisurely walk in the woods or stares at the streams in daylight, he or she can see those things.

Lines 9–14

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.

Moreover, according to the poet, people have no time to turn to a beautiful girl and watch how her feet graciously move while she dances. Along with that, one doesn’t wait till her mouth can enrich that smile her eyes began. Here, the poet touches on an exciting idea. When one is about to smile, her eyes reflect the sense of happiness first. Then, one can see how the emotion gets expressed through her face. In the last couplet, the poet remarks that a “poor life”, a metaphorical reference to mental poverty, is that of a person who doesn’t have time to stand and enjoy those things. The last couplet acts as a refrain .

Historical Context

The poem, ‘Leisure’ by Davies was first published in his “Songs Of Joy and Others” in 1911. This poem was one of the best poems by Davies. But, at that time, the poem was not included in the five Georgian Poetry anthologies published between 1912 and 1922 by Edward Marsh. Richard J. Stonesifer traces the origin of the poem back to the sonnet by William Wordsworth , ‘The World Is Too Much with Us .’ In his Critical Biography of Davies (1963), he says,

But he went to school with Wordsworth’s sonnet “The world is too much with us”, and echoes from that sonnet resound throughout his work as from few other poems. Philosophically, no other single poem can be said to form the basis of so much of his poetry. The celebrated opening of his wise little poem “Leisure” has its origins here.

Similar Poetry

Here is a list of some poems that are similar to the themes and subject matter of ‘Leisure’ by W. H. Davies.

  • A Country Life by Randall Jarrell – This poem depicts the impacts of life, death, and loneliness on one’s life before death finally comes.
  • Morning at the Window by T.S. Eliot – It is one of the best T.S. Eliot poems , and here the poet presents the impressions of the speaker after looking outside of the window.
  • Dust If You Must by Rose Milligan – This poem also deals with similar themes that are present in ‘Leisure’ .
  • Consider This And In Our Time by W.H. Auden – Here, in one of the best W.H. Auden poems , the poet talks about modern society consisting of individuals who are spiritually dead and sexually frozen.

leisure essay for 4th class

Hi,

You have written excellent essay and covered everything. Here are very few suggestions that can be added to improve some marks as per examiner's expectation.

1. You may add 2-3 conditional sentences (for example: if, although, even)

2. Complex sentences are also required in essay task 2 such as "not only but also" more and more type)

I am not sure if you already received your desired result and i am late to reply you!

Thanks,

5 paragraphs are good for an argumentative essay-

Restate the question but use different wording, AND give an idea of YOUR opinion.

Agree with the question statement and give reasons-support.

Show why the "other" opinion has advantages.

Show why YOUR opinion is the RIGHT one- use examples etc

Conclusion- Restate the argument and once again give your opinion.

These type essays work simply in 3 parts:-

Tell the reader what you are going to say

Tell it

: State what you have just said.

Leisure time is necessary for people after working and studying hard, and there are various recreation activities to do based on oneself. Many people support the methods helping the mind get better, while others endorse the thinking to rest in free time, but it is more effective if we participate in outside activities.

People can indeed improve their ability by practicing pursuits improving the mind. Doing the word puzzles helps us raise logical thinking and solve problems at work more effectively. On the other hand, we can expand our knowledge and absorb more information from books, and mental health will be better.

Standing at the other view, putting the mind at rest by enjoying media entertainment, people reduce the stress. After a long day at work or school, we usually feel tired and need to relax. There are many channels such as watching films, listening to music and playing games, our mind will balance again.

However, the two sorts of pursuits above have some disadvantages, such as we feel more stressed when practicing the mind or being not conscious of using entertaining electronic methods, we should take outdoor actions. When enjoying outside events, for instance, doing exercise or playing sports bring about our physical health will be better, the mind will be refreshed and having energies for new works.

In summary, doing activities, improving our mind in leisure time will enhance our thinking but perhaps, also lead to feeling more stressed. Meanwhile, laying the mind to rest helping us reduce work pressure; however, we can feel graver. Personally, participating in outside pursuits is suitable for both mental and physical health.

Pressure at Work and Time to Relax

by Mahesh Senadheera (Sri Lanka)

Many people think that nowadays people are being subjected to more and more pressure in their work and thus are having less and less time to relax. What is your opinion? yes, it is true that people are having less time to relax as they are subjected to more pressure in their work. it has been the routine of the average man to wake up early in the morning, to leave the home for work, to work to dusk and return home late night. Thus it is reasonable to say that people are being subjected to pressure and they have no time even to dream of relax. Due to the distance of the working place, a number of people find it difficult to reach there on time. So it is customory for them to leave the home early in the morning. To finish the daily course of the duty, they work as machines. Very often they fail to complete the duty of the day. The result is the amount of work on his shoulder is graduly climbing up. Consequently, intense of pressure is going up. Whether he is a government or prviate employ, this is the common situation. As a result, he has been deprived of his time to relax an refresh. On the other hand, people in this ultra modern generation are engaging in a very hectic life style because of their personal needs. They have been helpless in the management of their time. Load of the work, duty of the personal and the social life is pressurizing them moment by moment. Unwillingly, duty of the family and children become agrave problem if they do the work for living properly and vice versa. It leaves them only pressure and stress. According to the facts mentioned above, many people in the society today are being deprived of their time to be with the family members, to relax and refresh. Best Use of Leisure Time

by ahmet (istanbul)

Please provide me with some feedback on my Leisure Time Essay. Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles, other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time. Discuss both opinions and give your own opinion. Many people believe that it is significant using spare time for things that enhance the mind, for instance reading and doing word puzzles. the others think that it is vital to relax the mind during spare time. In my opinion, I agree that people should use leisure time for activities which improve the mind. On the one hand, some people have very exhausting job. Therefore, they would like to relax during leisure time, so they do not want to do anything within this time. They think they need to rest. Moreover, many people are lazy, for this reason they do not keen to do activities to improve the mind. For instance reading a book and doing Sudoku puzzles. On the other hand, many people have stressful job too, but they would like to enhance the mind. Therefore, they do many things within leisure time. Such as reading a novel, solving puzzles, doing exercises which are useful for improving the mind. I think that people who utilize spare time doing activities that boost the mind are more successful than others who love to use spare time for relaxing. Finally, in my opinion, people should use their leisure time to improve the mind. For this reason people should do anything which is useful for enhancing the mind. Moreover, I would argue that, people should hard working not to be idle. So they always doing something to be more successful. Furthermore, I think some activities are so relaxing while they improve the mind. Such as doing Sudoku puzzles. In conclusion, I agree that people should do activities that improve the mind during leisure time. Because, while that they are performing activities for improving the mind, the activities can contribute to job achievement. Moreover, I think, leisure time should be used effectively since it is so precious.

Good job!! needs some editing.

Work Pressure and Leisure Time

leisure essay for 4th class

Many people think that nowadays people are being subjected to more and more pressure in their work and thus are having less and less time to relax. What is your opinion? Today, almost all the people are declining their leisure time rather they are over occupied and concentrated working. First reason is competition inside the work place. Some people are treasuring their job, which some might replace their position anytime due to jealousy and envy, so workers are devoting their full time in working. For example, a nurse supervisor does not want to return to become a ordinary nurse, in order to maintained her rank. She should do her best to protect her position. Second reason is like expenditures. Some people are busy working for two or three jobs in order to support unnecessary necessities in their life, such as buying brand new car, “beyond your means”, meaning in their life that the salary is not enough to support any expenses. This shows that people re occupied working because they need to pay their debt. In my daily observation and opinion, workers should think that money is not all the matters for the reason that life is so short, which is why, as long as we still alive we need to enjoy whatever we have, in simple or extravagant way. Moreover, material things are easily can come and go and these things are not important in order to become happy. Giving importance of spending leisure time like going to watch cinema and visiting abroad so that we will feel happy. I therefore conclude, life is go on, so we need to enjoy single moment of our family, friends and people that surrounds us, rather than having the work position with pressure and in the end, we miss the happiness in our life.

The content and structure of the body paragraphs and conclusion are ok. You have topic sentences, explain things with examples and answer the questions to a reasonable extent.

But you do have quite a few grammar issues you need to work on.

I can't point them all out so you would need someone to take a look for you so you know where you need to improve in this respect.

Hope the test went well at the weekend.

Work and Relaxation

by Long (hong kong )

Many people think that nowadays people are being subjected to more and more pressure in their work and thus are having less and less time to relax. What is your opinion? Leisure time is essential in people's lives especially in this busy world, the valuable leisure time is getting less. However, people have different views on how to utilise their time. Some suggest to have mind improving activities yet the others believe resting is better. This essay will discuss on both sides of arguments. Some people believe having brain stimulation by activities can help in children development. Young people usually learn academic knowledges from school. Other than traditional learning, reading novels or science fiction stimulate their imagination, having mini- games such as world puzzles, Sudoku can facilitate their logical thinking. Multiple players' activities also provide platform for building teamwork. people can fully utilise their recreational time in order to improve their intelligence, which is important to become competitive in this crucial society. However, on the other hand, there are some strongly assert that resting is fundamental for leisure purpose. Nowadays, working over 50 hours a week is commonly seen elsewhere. Therefore, having such brain demanding activities after work or study would be a big burden to the participants. Instead, activities such as exercising, listening to music or even taking a nap would help recharging brain by simply resting. It is obvious that our brains require adequate rest to function in optimal level, people can concentrate on their works or learning after relaxation. In my opinion, both sides have their meets. Resting is significant between working intervals, while mind improving games boost brain development. Hence, I suggest people should employ mind stimulating activities if mentally capable. if people who get fatigue from using brain, mild activities would be good options to recharge. Leisure Time and Study

by Orifjon (Tashkent)

In some countries young people have little leisure time and are under a lot of pressure to work hard on their studies. What do you think are the causes for this? What solutions can you suggest? From the perspective of history countries were divided into several levels according to their inner development and status. Nowadays current issue is still in trend. Basically, there are some countries where students study under pressure, not having time to relax or do some leisure activities. In this essay, major reasons and possible solutions will be outlined according to question above. In my modest opinion, the basis of current issue lies in deep roots of education system of discussing countries. More clearly, governments -when planning the system - were now aware of students, who will then have to study following the government's system. Pattern of education was schemed involving positive sides only for governments rather than students. Some countries, for instance, are strictly critisized in planning the system compressed in order to spend less budget of organisation. This is, obviously, the most frightening way of objection of humanity's civil rights. One possible approach can be found in altering the way governments look at future of their own. In other words, the fact that proves that young generation is government's main stick point in the future should agitate them. The second and the main reason, however, touches the field of schools, universities and other educational organisations. The difference between humankind and animals is only - human moral ability to fell and think. By this argument, students are not tend to feel moral help from educational institutions. 2/3 of all educational institutions forgot about "motivation", "inspiration" and "encouragement". In this cruel world all of humanity attempts to show his cruelty and violence. And from my strongest point of view, problem can be solved by encouraging students morally, to support and help by showing various ways that can withdraw out of harsh situations. Educational organisations should find out ways of innovative pedagogical methods. Only this way, problem of student pressure can be solved. By way of conclusion, I find it necessary to reaffirm my point on altering the way governments and educational organisations see their future, otherwise serious problems can occur in society of ours. *** What do you think of this Leisure Time Essay about studying? Leisure time is actually meaning our free times. As a student or a job holder, everyone spends a busy time in their life. But everyone gets a break from study or work. We address that time as ‘Leisure Time’. So this is important for our regular life to spend some free time. We can spend leisure time doing lots of good things.

I suggest reading books. Because I believe book reading is one of the best habits for humans. It improves our knowledge and personality. You can spend time doing the thing that you like most. Your hobbies could be a good option for you.

Leisure Time Paragraph (150 Words) for Class 5, 6, 7

Leisure time is simply free time when we don’t have any specific things to do. But we still can do lots of things to make our time better. Some of us might watch TV or go out to hang out with friends in leisure time. But there are lots of productive things that we can do.

I am not saying hangout is bad, but there are lots of things that are even better. Painting is one of my hobbies and I love to draw several things. When I was a kid, I thought to become a painter in the future. And still, I have that dream. When I get free time I start painting different things.

You should have some hobbies in your life and I am sure you have. You can try them. You can try gardening, playing music, and reading books or go fishing. Overall leisure time should be a quality time for us.

Leisure Time Paragraph (200 Words) for Class 8, 9, 10

Leisure time doesn’t mean time to waste or spend without any good reason. When we take a break from our work or study then we get lots of leisure time to spend. But we need to be aware that we must do something in those times that help us in the future. I am a book lover personally and I read lots of books.

I have a different time schedule for reading books. When I get free times I spend them reading quality books. There are lots of books that we all need to read. Not only book reading, but you might also have a good hobby. You can spend time doing that.

Gardening is a really good thing to do in your spare time. If you have a good budget then traveling or a tour could be good for you. When you are on a tour it will teach you lots of things. Personally, I travel a lot. I wanted to become a travel writer. I read lots of travel books.

So you can see we can use our leisure time for quality works and can be benefitted. Anyone can do this in their life. So we all shouldn’t waste our leisure time. We should learn something or do something that can make our life better.

Full body of anonymous barefoot female with flying hair standing on sandy coast near waving sea against colorful rainbow in nature

February 13, 2024 by sastry

Essay on Leisure: Life may be considered an interval between birth and death. Life, according to an Arabian proverb, is composed of two parts, that which is past-a dream, and that which is to come-a wish.

What is this life full of care? We have no time to stand and stare. -W.H. Davies

Essay on Leisure
