Teaching Ideas

Speech Marks

There are a number of resources which can be used to teach children about speech marks (also known as inverted commas or quotation marks):

1)  Witch and Tiger Conversation . This worksheet (in PDF format below) shows ten pictures of a witch and a tiger having a conversation. The speech bubbles are blank, and the procedure for using this worksheet goes as follows:

  • First, the children can choose names for the witch and the tiger.
  • Then, they have to create the contents of the conversation. The topic of the conversation could be decided by the children, or it could be based on a choice by the teacher. You could even complete the conversation before the lesson, in order to save more time for the next (and most important) section.
  • Now the children have to re-write this conversation in the form of a story. They will need to include phrases such as “said Tom” and “asked Joe”. Speech marks will also need to be used, so it is important that children have a good knowledge of the correct use of speech marks before this activity is tried.

2)  Missing Speech Marks . This activity is also based on a worksheet, which can be also be found below. It contains a number of sentences involving speech. However, the speech marks have been removed from the text and should be replaced by the children.

3)  Missing Speech Marks . This activity is very similar to the one above, with children required to put speech marks in the correct place in each of the sentences. The worksheet (in PDF format) is also below.

Speech Marks

This quiz is about speech marks and introduces Key Stage 1 students to speech marks and their purpose. The National Curriculum doesn’t expect children in this key stage to know how to use speech marks as this is required in Year 3. When reading, however, they do need to know when a character is speaking. Therefore, this introduction to speech marks will aid their reading and comprehension skills and add to their all-round literacy and English knowledge.

When we read a story, sometimes the characters speak. We know a character is speaking because speech marks show us. When you see “ this means somebody has started speaking and this sign ” means they have finished.

Use Plazoom’s Sentence Builder Game to develop Year 3 and Year 4 pupils’ understanding of the use of speech marks when writing direct speech. They will do this by learning how to write direct speech using inverted commas and other speech punctuation, varying the position of the reporting clause. Pupils will use the direct speech and reporting clause cards to create sentences, rehearsing them orally before writing. The grammar game will also give pupils the opportunity to use and understand grammar terminology in English appendix 2 when discussing their sentences.

This sentence game for KS2 can be played as a whole class as a fun English lesson starter activity or as the main focus of the lesson. It could also be used as a writing intervention in KS2 for pupils who may need support to use direct speech in KS2.

What is direct speech?

Direct speech is when the exact words that someone says are written.

  • “We are going on an adventure,” said Travis.

How do we punctuate direct speech?

Inverted commas , or speech marks, are used when writing direct speech. The inverted commas go around what is said within a sentence. Other speech punctuation is also needed. Punctuation is needed at the end of the direct speech before the inverted comma, and a comma is used after the reporting clause if this comes before the direct speech.

  • Travis said, “We are going on an adventure.”

What is the reporting clause?

The reporting clause is the short clause that can come before or after the direct speech that states who was talking. It can also show how the speech was said.

  • “We are going on an adventure,” announced Travis.

National Curriculum English programme of study links

  • Pupils should compose and rehearse sentences orally, progressively building a varied and rich vocabulary and an increasing range of sentence structures.
  • Pupils should be taught to use and punctuate direct speech.
  • Pupils should be taught to use and understand the grammatical terminology in English appendix 2 accurately and appropriately when discussing their writing.

Reality TV star Savannah Chrisley laments parents' prison sentence at RNC. What to know

speech sentences ks1

Savannah Chrisley , daughter of  " Chrisley Knows Best " stars Todd  and  Julie Chrisley , spoke about her parents' prison sentences at the Republican National Convention Tuesday night.

She opened reading numbers that she said were her parents prison identification numbers.

"You may have seen my family on TV, but for the past decade, we've been consumed with a different kind of drama," she said. "My family was persecuted by rogue prosecutors in Fulton County due to our public profile."

Savannah Chrisley's parents are currently serving prison sentences after a jury found them guilty in 2022 of conspiring to defraud community banks, defraud the IRS and commit tax evasion.

Here is what to know about the family and their legal battles:

RNC 2024 live coverage: Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley make GOP pitch at Republican convention

Reality TV shows follow Chrisley family for a decade

"Chrisley Knows Best" aired on USA Network for 10 seasons, from 2014 through 2023. The reality show followed Todd and Julie Chrisley in their lives as real estate tycoons in the South.

"Growing Up Chrisley," a spin-off featuring the couple's adult children, Chase and Savannah Chrisley, went on for four seasons after its 2019 premiere.

Variety  and  Deadline reported in 2023 that the family is planning a reality TV comeback covering the children's lives as they adjust to their parents' imprisonment.

Why are Savannah Chrisley's parents in prison?

Todd and Julie Chrisley are both  serving prison sentences  after a jury in June 2022 found them guilty of conspiring to defraud community banks in Atlanta out of more than $36 million in fraudulent loans, defraud the IRS and commit tax evasion.

Julie Chrisley was also convicted of obstruction of justice.

Five months later,  Todd Chrisley was sentenced  to 12 years in prison, while Julie Chrisley received a shorter sentence that is being sent back to court for resentencing after an appeal.

The couple settled a lawsuit against a state tax official for $1 million earlier this year . Todd Chrisley was recently ordered to pay $755,000 in a defamation lawsuit brought by a former Georgia Department of Revenue investigator.

Prison records show Julie Chrisley is currently expected to be released in May 2028 and Todd Chrisley is expected to be released in August of 2032.

Savannah Chrisley speaks on "Make America Safe Again" night at RNC

Tuesday's theme at the convention was "Make America Safe Again," as many speakers addressed law enforcement, the military and immigration control. Chrisley spoke about the combined 19-year sentence her parents received and receiving custody of her younger siblings.

"I'll never forget what the prosecutor said in the most heavily Democrat county in the state before an Obama-appointed judge," Chrisley said on the RNC stage. "He called us the 'Trumps of the South.' Hey, it's fine, he meant it as an insult, but let me tell ya boy do I wear it as a badge of honor."

She accused the justice system of being unfair, and said she has become an advocate for criminal justice reform.

Chrisley RNC speech nods to Fulton County, Georgia

Chrisley made an apparent off-script nod to Fulton County, which includes Atlanta, Georgia, during her RNC remarks.

"I know, Fulton County," she said. "They know how to do it don't they."

Fulton County is where presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants were charged in a election interference case. The case is on hold while the state's highest court decides whether to remove the prosecutor, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
