Eller College Dean and Finance Department Head Receive University of Arizona Foundation’s Eugene G. Sander Faculty Fundraising AwardKarthik Kannan , dean and Halle Chair in Leadership and Kathy Kahle , Ann Griffin Endowed Chair in Finance and finance department head in the Eller College of Management , have both been selected as 2023-2024 recipients of the University of Arizona Foundation’s Eugene G. Sander Faculty Fundraising Award. The Sander Faculty Fundraising Award was established by the Foundation Board of Trustees in 2008 to honor faculty who set examples among their peers for upholding high standards of performance in fundraising and development efforts. The award is named after former University President and Dean of the College and Agricultural Life Sciences (CALS) Eugene G. Sander—an early advocate and leader of faculty involvement in the fundraising process. “Kannan hit the ground running, engaging with Eller’s top donors even before he had arrived in Tucson as Dean. PAE leadership appreciated the opportunity to support his transition to the University,” says JP Roczniak, president and CEO of the UA Foundation. “Eller’s future is bright under his leadership, and we look forward to continuing to partner with him to help the College continue to Fuel Wonder.” Kannan and Kahle were selected for the award because they are exemplars of academic partners who uphold high standards of fundraising and collaborative development efforts and the foundation wishes to recognize the thoughtful and effective donor-relations manner along with their commitment to working strategically with UA Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement (PAE) colleagues. “As head of the Department of Finance, Kathy has prioritized funding and built strong relationships with new supporters while also deepening relationships with existing donors,” says Roczniak. She has inspired donors who are passionate about making an impact at the University and Eller and has helped secure significant philanthropic support for Eller Finance, and for that, our team is grateful.” Kannan and Kahle will be presented the Eugene G. Sander Faculty Fundraising Award at the University of Arizona Foundation’s Board of Trustee’s reception on Thursday, May 2 at the new Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine facility. Tufts University Celebrates Inaugural Graduation of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program in PhoenixTufts University School of Medicine proudly announces the graduation of the inaugural class from its innovative hybrid, accelerated Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program in Phoenix, Arizona. Celebratory events took place on August 23-24; however, students will officially become graduates only upon the conferral of their degrees. The milestone hooding event marks a significant achievement not only for the students but also for the university as it expands its educational reach beyond the East Coast. Addressing Arizona's Physical Therapy Needs Launched in Summer 2022, the DPT-Phoenix program was designed to meet the growing demand for skilled physical therapists in Arizona, which has one of the lowest ratios of physical therapists per capita in the nation, according to a 2020 report . The program is poised to make a significant impact on the local healthcare landscape, contributing to the well-being of the community from which they received their education. “I am a Phoenix native and have always planned on serving my community,” said Manuel Trejo, DPT24. “I have recently accepted a position with BodyCentral Physical Therapy at their Mesa clinic to work as a pelvic health physical therapist and will be serving a patient population in desperate need of more pelvic health physical therapists.” When asked about specific community needs, Trejo emphasized the importance of Spanish-speaking providers. “There are medical interpreters and translation services, but nuances can still be lost,” he said. “Direct communication with a provider who speaks their language empowers patients and helps them feel more comfortable and understood.” This is why Trejo is particularly enthusiastic about using his bilingual skills to support the Spanish-speaking community. “Throughout my clinical rotations, being a native Spanish speaker allowed me to communicate directly with patients in their preferred language,” he said. “This not only made them feel heard and understood but also fostered an environment where they could fully express themselves without language barriers. My goal is to recreate this supportive environment for my patients in Phoenix.” Celebration Highlights: Graduation Events and Hooding CeremonyGraduation events on August 23 and 24 included an open house at the Phoenix campus, allowing students to reconnect with faculty and introduce their families to the facilities integral to their education. The highlight was the formal hooding ceremony at the Phoenix Sheraton Downtown, which marked the culmination of the students' dedication and hard work, as they prepare to embark on their professional journeys. “For a student, the hooding ceremony is a moment of immense pride, celebrating an achievement that required significant dedication and sacrifice,” said Tawna Wilkinson, PT, DPT, PhD, program director. “Seeing a student cross the stage and receive their hood reinforces the connection we’ve shared and highlights their journey and bright future. It’s a momentous occasion.” The event included speeches from Helen Boucher, MD, dean of Tufts University School of Medicine; Eric Hegedus, PT, DPT, PhD, MHSc, department chair; and other faculty members, along with student representatives Sutiluck Boonsrisart and Michael Jeppesen, who served as cohort leaders. Shaping Future Physical Therapists“Our inaugural Phoenix cohort represents a historic moment for Tufts University, as the first program established outside the East Coast,” added Angela Spontelli Gisselman, PT, PhD, DPT, director of admissions. “These students have demonstrated resilience and dedication, embodying the values of excellence, humanism, and lifelong learning that Tufts DPT strives to instill. We are excited to see the impact they will make in the physical therapy profession, particularly in Arizona, where their expertise is greatly needed.” The program’s hybrid model, combining rigorous online coursework with in-person clinical skills labs, has allowed students to balance their education with personal commitments. This flexibility, along with a focus on humanism and diversity, has attracted a diverse student body, including first-generation college students, parents, and individuals from underrepresented communities in physical therapy. The faculty and the program’s mission also play a crucial role in shaping students into skilled physical therapists. “The faculty and curriculum have significantly shaped my preparation for a career as a physical therapist,” said Trejo. “They have instilled in me the understanding that learning is a continuous journey in this profession. That I should strive to continue my education and look to my peers and fellow clinicians for assistance in providing quality care for my patients. More importantly, to always reflect on the role I am privileged to serve in as a physical therapist.” Class of 2024: A Legacy of Compassion and HumanismThe Class of 2024 holds a special place in the history of Tufts University, being the first cohort of the Phoenix program. The program is proud of them for exemplifying the School of Medicine's values. “What I will remember most about the Class of 2024 is how they have embodied the TUSM value of humanism—treating all people with compassion, and respecting human dignity and autonomy,” said Gisselman. As the DPT-Phoenix program continues to grow, Tufts University remains committed to providing top-tier education and training to future physical therapists, preparing them to meet the challenges of a dynamic healthcare environment. People eating beef are less likely to live near the industry’s pollution, Pitt researchers found- Propel scholarship, creativity and innovation

Subscribe to Pittwire TodayAnyone who’s researched ways to lower their environmental impact has likely heard they should eat less meat, particularly beef. Even at scale, cows are an inefficient way to feed people — it takes nearly four tons of water to recoup one ton of beef , and many farming practices emit greenhouse gasses and pollutants. University of Pittsburgh researchers are the first to trace one of those pollutants, nitrogen, along the U.S. beef supply chain at the county level. They found high spatial disconnect between where beef is eaten and where nitrogen’s impacts are felt. Previous research looked at production-based impacts, said Vikas Khanna , professor of civil and environmental engineering in the Swanson School of Engineering. “They’ve asked, ‘what does it take to produce a certain quantity of beef?’ And they tend to report average environmental impacts,” such as how much water, greenhouse gasses or other pollutants result over the entire process. In a paper published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology , Khanna and PhD student Anaís Ostroski map the impacts of nitrogen county by county, providing the clearest picture yet of which areas face some of the environmental effects of cattle farming. Khanna and Ostroski are joined by Oleg Prokopyev, a former professor of industrial engineering at Pitt now at the University of Zurich. “It is essential to measure nitrogen losses and understand where they happen due to the cascading effects on the environment,” said Ostroski, the paper’s lead author. “A single molecule of reactive nitrogen can cause multiple adverse effects until it is converted back to stable atmospheric nitrogen. Food supply chains have grown increasingly complex; we found that when beef is consumed in a given county, it is associated with nitrogen losses in more than 200 counties on average.” Our atmosphere is 79% nitrogen, but atmospheric nitrogen has strong bonds and doesn’t react with other substances. The nitrogen used for fertilizer, however, is reactive. As it accumulates it can create surface-level ozone, which can lead to respiratory problems. When rain washes nitrogen fertilizers from croplands into waterways, it can spark runaway algae growth, which takes oxygen from the water, suffocating fish and other marine life. In 2017, beef consumption was responsible for about 1,330 gigagrams of nitrogen released into the environment — that’s enough to fertilize about 19.5 million acres, or 20% of all the corn grown in the United States. When beef is consumed in a given county, it is associated with nitrogen losses in more than 200 counties on average. Anaís Ostroski its effects are not felt equally across the country. The new research shows people living along the East Coast and in large swaths of California, Nevada and Arizona are more than 600 miles away from the nitrogen that entered the environment in service of their burger. The pollution happens in a few different ways along the supply chain. Cows are fed food that is grown using nitrogen fertilizers. Much of that is leached away by rainwater, tainting nearby land and water supplies. Beef cattle are kept in processing facilities where nitrogen is released in wastewater. Here, Khanna sees an opportunity to minimize nitrogen pollution by implementing a circular economy model where valuable nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus are recovered from the wastewater. “Recouping nutrients from animal wastewaters would be a win-win solution,” he said. Nitrogen would be kept out of the ecosystem, and farmers could reuse the nitrogen as fertilizer while also reusing the treated water for irrigation. While it’s important to look at technological solutions to reduce the impact of cattle farming on the environment, Khanna has words of caution about technological exuberance, “Let's not just look at the trees and miss the forest. It is important to look at potential solutions from a holistic perspective to make sure we are not solving one problem at the expense of others.” — Brandie Jefferson, photography by Alabama Extension via Wikimedia Commons This research was funded by the National Science Foundation.
