Commencement Program Information

The Graduate College is developing a new system to manage the student names and information to be included in the May 2016 Commencement program.  Information will be sent to departments once the new system is in place.  Students will be able to check their information for the program and provide corrections when the new system is avilable.

Information About Diplomas

  • Diplomas are not given out at Commencement. Diplomas are ordered individually for each student after the final degree audit of their academic record is completed. Auditors work as quickly as possible, but the process takes time.  It takes about four weeks after the audit is complete and the order has been placed for the diploma to arrive in your mailbox.
  • Diplomas are issued using your name as it is listed on your official University of Arizona record. If you want your name changed you must request an official name change with the Registrar's Office . Note: If you set up a “preferred” name in UAccess, be aware that your official name on your diploma will be your official name and not your “preferred” name.
  • Your diploma will not be ordered and mailed until you have paid any remaining balance on your UA account. Please contact the Bursar's office with questions or concerns.
  • The diploma will be mailed to the address you have listed in UAccess as your Diploma address. If you do not have a Diploma address listed, it will be mailed to the Permanent address on your record. Please check your addresses in UAccess to make sure your diploma will be mailed to the right place.
  • Most international students' permanent addresses are in their home country. If you do NOT want your diploma sent to your home country address, please go to UAccess and create a new address and indicate its type as 'Diploma'. You should create your Diploma address before the end of your graduation term.

What are the different types of regalia for graduation and what do they mean?

By Michael Feder

Excited University of Phoenix graduate leaps into the air

Read about our editorial review process.

At a glance

  • Academic regalia refers to the cap and gown students wear at their graduation.
  • Academic regalia is a ceremonial tradition at commencements. The term dates back to the 16th century, but the practice of incorporating academic dress started even earlier.
  • Different colors and adornments reflect various academic achievements, disciplines and honors as well as which academic level a graduate has completed.
  • University of Phoenix commencement ceremonies honor the past while recognizing the achievements of our students by approaching regalia in a way that is uniquely UOPX.

Why do college graduates wear caps and gowns during graduation anyway?

The term regalia originated in the 1530s. It means, “Rights and powers of a king, royal privilege,” and it stems from the Latin regalia meaning “royal things.” The proto-Indo-European root “reg-” means to “move in a straight line” and “to lead, rule” in certain contexts.

In the 1670s, regalia was first used to refer to “decorations or insignia of an order,” and this definition is the closest to how the term is used today. Emblems or insignia are used during formal occasions to denote status, something that also applies to the attire and adornments worn during academic commencement ceremonies.

Over time, traditions evolve, and graduation ceremonies are no exception. Some educational institutions change their ceremonies to fit their own need; nevertheless, such ceremonies are typically still rooted in tradition.

Types of regalia

Academic regalia is often referred to as the “ cap and gown ” but involves several distinct components. Required attire for commencement depends on the type of degree you have earned.

The gowns worn for traditional graduation ceremonies originated in the 12th century with medieval scholars’ garments. It’s speculated that these long gowns were donned to keep scholars warm in drafty buildings and symbolized their status at the same time.

In 1895, the Intercollegiate Registry of Academic Costume introduced the Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume , detailing black gowns with:

  • Pointed sleeves for bachelor’s degrees
  • Long, closed sleeves for master’s degrees
  • Round, open sleeves for doctoral degrees

It also adds velvet stripes in front and on the sleeves of doctoral gowns, matching in color to the graduate’s respective degree department.

Today, the types and colors of graduation gowns may vary depending on university policy. Most traditions are upheld, however, with long gowns that cover the entire body and velvet stripes on the sleeves signifying doctoral or faculty status. At times, the gown is made of velvet material.

While the hood used to be a fixture of all gowns and robes as a means to keep warm, today they are usually present on robes for master’s and doctoral candidates only.

The hood has areas for specific colors. The hood trim color, for example, can indicate academic discipline affiliation . The chevrons (or stripes) might represent school colors. If there is a hood, it may be worn draped across the back of the robe with a cap in its place.

The flat caps that are now synonymous with commencement evolved from the long hoods of the Middle Ages to skullcaps in the 1700s. The 1895 code standardized skullcaps with mortarboards, the flat, square boards you see today on top of the skullcap. The code also mentioned the requirement that tassels be attached to the middle of the mortarboard, much like you see today.

These flat graduation caps with long tassels typically incorporate a university’s chosen colors and often include some embellishments, such as a school’s insignia as a metal charm on the tassel. Students may also decorate their caps to stick out in a sea of identical caps.

Students earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees wear the typical mortarboard and tassel. Those earning doctoral degrees replace the flat cap with a tam . A tam is typically made of black velvet and has a soft top rather than a rigid board. They can have four, six or eight sides and typically have a similar tassel.

Often a brilliant gold color, the tassel is used in a ceremonial gesture when students are officially declared graduates. For bachelor’s graduates, the tassel is worn on the right until their degree is conferred. Then, they move the tassel to the left. Master’s and doctoral graduates typically keep the tassel on the right to signify achievement.

Once a ceremony comes to a close, graduates often throw their caps in the air to celebrate. This practice may vary depending on school policy.

At some universities, cords are draped across graduates’ shoulders to signify affiliation with certain organizations, such as membership in an honor society. These cords might adopt the school’s colors. Some universities adopt cords to signify academic distinctions or affiliations with honor societies. There is no national standard for these distinctions, but universities award them according to GPA.

Similar to cords, stoles are draped around the shoulders of the gown. They are also sometimes referred to as graduation sashes and are made of a silky material. They signify affiliation with extracurricular clubs, Greek life, military service, professional organizations and more. Stole colors vary but are designed to align with their affiliation and contrast with the main color of the gown.

Regalia traditions by academic level.

The traditional regalia of caps, gowns, stoles and mortarboards is found across all academic levels, but there are differences based on the level of academic achievement. Let’s take a look at the different regalia at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree levels.

Bachelor’s degree regalia

When earning a bachelor’s degree, the graduate is typically required to wear:

  • Floor-length gown
  • Skullcap and mortarboard
  • Affiliation cords and stoles

Students often personalize their mortarboards. These decorations can include elements from their cultural background, visuals related to their profession, personal messages or artistic expression.

Master’s degree regalia

Master’s degree candidates differentiate their attire from that of bachelor’s degree candidates by wearing a gown adorned with a hood.

Traditionally, hood colors for master’s graduates often correspond with different academic disciplines within the master’s program. Regalia hood colors might stick to traditional colors, but some schools use their own brand colors.

Doctoral degree regalia

As the highest graduate achievement, a doctoral degree is differentiated from the others in several ways. As mentioned, doctoral candidates typically wear tams in lieu of caps. They also wear velvet robes with hoods, and their robes have velvet stripes on the front and sleeves, according to academic discipline.

Doctoral degree colors

Hood and stripe colors for doctoral candidates denote different disciplines. These are typically the same as other color designations for departments and include but are not limited to:

  • Doctor of Nursing : Apricot
  • Doctor of Health Administration : Sage green
  • Doctor of Business Administration : Drab
  • Doctor of Education : Light blue

Commencement ceremonies at University of Phoenix

University of Phoenix commencement ceremonies honor the past while recognizing what makes us distinctly unique. UOPX graduates aren’t the typical 18-to-20-year-old. They’re working adults who desire to learn more and expand their skill set but require a flexible schedule. Being able to take courses and then graduate amid everything else they are juggling is typically a significant event.

At University of Phoenix, commencement ceremonies celebrate individual student accomplishments and recognize faculty who guided students on their educational journeys. They also offer an opportunity for friends and family to share in the achievement of graduates (especially those who supported the graduates throughout their academic journeys).

To accommodate students who live all over the country and often balance multiple professional and personal commitments while going to school, UOPX offers an annual commencement ceremony in Phoenix as well as other ceremonies in selected locations throughout the year.

Eligible students and graduates can attend one of these ceremonies. They may also choose to attend a virtual commencement , either instead of an in-person commencement or in addition to it. Additional commencement details can be found online at phoenix.edu/commencement .

University of Phoenix regalia standards

If you’re planning to graduate soon or wanting to picture yourself as a UOPX alum, we’ll provide a glimpse into what you will look like walking across the stage at graduation.

You will find that like many other commencement ceremonies, students don a graduation cap and gown but other details may vary.

University of Phoenix graduates must wear the appropriate regalia to in-person commencement ceremonies. (Regalia isn’t required for virtual ceremonies.)

The University’s official school colors are UOPX Red and UOPX Platinum. These are custom colors and proprietary to the University. Graduates will see these colors prominently displayed at commencement, as they observe the following parameters:

*It’s important to note that some of the degrees listed below are no longer offered at University of Phoenix.

Eller College Dean and Finance Department Head Receive University of Arizona Foundation’s Eugene G. Sander Faculty Fundraising Award

university of arizona phd regalia

Karthik Kannan , dean and Halle Chair in Leadership and Kathy Kahle , Ann Griffin Endowed Chair in Finance and finance department head in the Eller College of Management , have both been selected as 2023-2024 recipients of the University of Arizona Foundation’s Eugene G. Sander Faculty Fundraising Award.

university of arizona phd regalia

The Sander Faculty Fundraising Award was established by the Foundation Board of Trustees in 2008 to honor faculty who set examples among their peers for upholding high standards of performance in fundraising and development efforts.

The award is named after former University President and Dean of the College and Agricultural Life Sciences (CALS) Eugene G. Sander—an early advocate and leader of faculty involvement in the fundraising process.

“Kannan hit the ground running, engaging with Eller’s top donors even before he had arrived in Tucson as Dean. PAE leadership appreciated the opportunity to support his transition to the University,” says JP Roczniak, president and CEO of the UA Foundation. “Eller’s future is bright under his leadership, and we look forward to continuing to partner with him to help the College continue to Fuel Wonder.”

Kathleen Kahle

Kannan and Kahle were selected for the award because they are exemplars of academic partners who uphold high standards of fundraising and collaborative development efforts and the foundation wishes to recognize the thoughtful and effective donor-relations manner along with their commitment to working strategically with UA Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement (PAE) colleagues.

“As head of the Department of Finance, Kathy has prioritized funding and built strong relationships with new supporters while also deepening relationships with existing donors,” says Roczniak. She has inspired donors who are passionate about making an impact at the University and Eller and has helped secure significant philanthropic support for Eller Finance, and for that, our team is grateful.”

Kannan and Kahle will be presented the Eugene G. Sander Faculty Fundraising Award at the University of Arizona Foundation’s Board of Trustee’s reception on Thursday, May 2 at the new Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine facility.

Tufts University Celebrates Inaugural Graduation of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program in Phoenix

DPT students walk out of hooding graduation ceremony in Phoenix, AZ.

Tufts University School of Medicine proudly announces the graduation of the inaugural class from its innovative hybrid, accelerated Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program in Phoenix, Arizona. Celebratory events took place on August 23-24; however, students will officially become graduates only upon the conferral of their degrees. The milestone hooding event marks a significant achievement not only for the students but also for the university as it expands its educational reach beyond the East Coast.

Addressing Arizona's Physical Therapy Needs

Launched in Summer 2022, the DPT-Phoenix program was designed to meet the growing demand for skilled physical therapists in Arizona, which has one of the lowest ratios of physical therapists per capita in the nation, according to a 2020 report .

The program is poised to make a significant impact on the local healthcare landscape, contributing to the well-being of the community from which they received their education.

“I am a Phoenix native and have always planned on serving my community,” said Manuel Trejo, DPT24. “I have recently accepted a position with BodyCentral Physical Therapy at their Mesa clinic to work as a pelvic health physical therapist and will be serving a patient population in desperate need of more pelvic health physical therapists.”

When asked about specific community needs, Trejo emphasized the importance of Spanish-speaking providers.

“There are medical interpreters and translation services, but nuances can still be lost,” he said. “Direct communication with a provider who speaks their language empowers patients and helps them feel more comfortable and understood.” This is why Trejo is particularly enthusiastic about using his bilingual skills to support the Spanish-speaking community.

“Throughout my clinical rotations, being a native Spanish speaker allowed me to communicate directly with patients in their preferred language,” he said. “This not only made them feel heard and understood but also fostered an environment where they could fully express themselves without language barriers. My goal is to recreate this supportive environment for my patients in Phoenix.”

Celebration Highlights: Graduation Events and Hooding Ceremony

Graduation events on August 23 and 24 included an open house at the Phoenix campus, allowing students to reconnect with faculty and introduce their families to the facilities integral to their education. The highlight was the formal hooding ceremony at the Phoenix Sheraton Downtown, which marked the culmination of the students' dedication and hard work, as they prepare to embark on their professional journeys.

“For a student, the hooding ceremony is a moment of immense pride, celebrating an achievement that required significant dedication and sacrifice,” said Tawna Wilkinson, PT, DPT, PhD, program director. “Seeing a student cross the stage and receive their hood reinforces the connection we’ve shared and highlights their journey and bright future. It’s a momentous occasion.”

The event included speeches from Helen Boucher, MD, dean of Tufts University School of Medicine; Eric Hegedus, PT, DPT, PhD, MHSc, department chair; and other faculty members, along with student representatives Sutiluck Boonsrisart and Michael Jeppesen, who served as   cohort leaders.

Shaping Future Physical Therapists

“Our inaugural Phoenix cohort represents a historic moment for Tufts University, as the first program established outside the East Coast,” added Angela Spontelli Gisselman, PT, PhD, DPT, director of admissions. “These students have demonstrated resilience and dedication, embodying the values of excellence, humanism, and lifelong learning that Tufts DPT strives to instill. We are excited to see the impact they will make in the physical therapy profession, particularly in Arizona, where their expertise is greatly needed.”

The program’s hybrid model, combining rigorous online coursework with in-person clinical skills labs, has allowed students to balance their education with personal commitments. This flexibility, along with a focus on humanism and diversity, has attracted a diverse student body, including first-generation college students, parents, and individuals from underrepresented communities in physical therapy.

The faculty and the program’s mission also play a crucial role in shaping students into skilled physical therapists.

“The faculty and curriculum have significantly shaped my preparation for a career as a physical therapist,” said Trejo. “They have instilled in me the understanding that learning is a continuous journey in this profession. That I should strive to continue my education and look to my peers and fellow clinicians for assistance in providing quality care for my patients. More importantly, to always reflect on the role I am privileged to serve in as a physical therapist.”

Class of 2024: A Legacy of Compassion and Humanism

The Class of 2024 holds a special place in the history of Tufts University, being the first cohort of the Phoenix program. The program is proud of them for exemplifying the School of Medicine's values.

“What I will remember most about the Class of 2024 is how they have embodied the TUSM value of humanism—treating all people with compassion, and respecting human dignity and autonomy,” said Gisselman.

As the DPT-Phoenix program continues to grow, Tufts University remains committed to providing top-tier education and training to future physical therapists, preparing them to meet the challenges of a dynamic healthcare environment.

People eating beef are less likely to live near the industry’s pollution, Pitt researchers found

Anyone who’s researched ways to lower their environmental impact has likely heard they should eat less meat, particularly beef. Even at scale, cows are an inefficient way to feed people — it takes nearly four tons of water to recoup one ton of beef , and many farming practices emit greenhouse gasses and pollutants.

University of Pittsburgh researchers are the first to trace one of those pollutants, nitrogen, along the U.S. beef supply chain at the county level. They found high spatial disconnect between where beef is eaten and where nitrogen’s impacts are felt.

Previous research looked at production-based impacts, said Vikas Khanna , professor of civil and environmental engineering in the Swanson School of Engineering. “They’ve asked, ‘what does it take to produce a certain quantity of beef?’ And they tend to report average environmental impacts,” such as how much water, greenhouse gasses or other pollutants result over the entire process.

In a paper published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology , Khanna and PhD student Anaís Ostroski map the impacts of nitrogen county by county, providing the clearest picture yet of which areas face some of the environmental effects of cattle farming. Khanna and Ostroski are joined by Oleg Prokopyev, a former professor of industrial engineering at Pitt now at the University of Zurich.

“It is essential to measure nitrogen losses and understand where they happen due to the cascading effects on the environment,” said Ostroski, the paper’s lead author. “A single molecule of reactive nitrogen can cause multiple adverse effects until it is converted back to stable atmospheric nitrogen. Food supply chains have grown increasingly complex; we found that when beef is consumed in a given county, it is associated with nitrogen losses in more than 200 counties on average.”

Our atmosphere is 79% nitrogen, but atmospheric nitrogen has strong bonds and doesn’t react with other substances. The nitrogen used for fertilizer, however, is reactive. As it accumulates it can create surface-level ozone, which can lead to respiratory problems. When rain washes nitrogen fertilizers from croplands into waterways, it can spark runaway algae growth, which takes oxygen from the water, suffocating fish and other marine life.

In 2017, beef consumption was responsible for about 1,330 gigagrams of nitrogen released into the environment — that’s enough to fertilize about 19.5 million acres, or 20% of all the corn grown in the United States.

When beef is consumed in a given county, it is associated with nitrogen losses in more than 200 counties on average. Anaís Ostroski

its effects are not felt equally across the country.

The new research shows people living along the East Coast and in large swaths of California, Nevada and Arizona are more than 600 miles away from the nitrogen that entered the environment in service of their burger.

The pollution happens in a few different ways along the supply chain. Cows are fed food that is grown using nitrogen fertilizers. Much of that is leached away by rainwater, tainting nearby land and water supplies.

Beef cattle are kept in processing facilities where nitrogen is released in wastewater. Here, Khanna sees an opportunity to minimize nitrogen pollution by implementing a circular economy model where valuable nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus are recovered from the wastewater.

“Recouping nutrients from animal wastewaters would be a win-win solution,” he said. Nitrogen would be kept out of the ecosystem, and farmers could reuse the nitrogen as fertilizer while also reusing the treated water for irrigation.

While it’s important to look at technological solutions to reduce the impact of cattle farming on the environment, Khanna has words of caution about technological exuberance, “Let's not just look at the trees and miss the forest. It is important to look at potential solutions from a holistic perspective to make sure we are not solving one problem at the expense of others.”
