Food as You Know It Is About to Change

From the vantage of the American supermarket aisle, the modern food system looks like a kind of miracle. Everything has been carefully cultivated for taste and convenience — even those foods billed as organic or heirloom — and produce regarded as exotic luxuries just a few generations ago now seems more like staples, available on demand: avocados, mangoes, out-of-season blueberries imported from Uruguay.

But the supermarket is also increasingly a diorama of the fragility of a system — disrupted in recent years by the pandemic, conflict and, increasingly, climate change. What comes next? Almost certainly, more disruptions and more hazards, enough to remake the whole future of food.

The world as a whole is already facing what the Cornell agricultural economist Chris Barrett calls a “food polycrisis.” Over the past decade, he says, what had long been reliable global patterns of year-on-year improvements in hunger first stalled and then reversed. Rates of undernourishment have grown 21 percent since 2017. Agricultural yields are still growing, but not as quickly as they used to and not as quickly as demand is booming. Obesity has continued to rise, and the average micronutrient content of dozens of popular vegetables has continued to fall . The food system is contributing to the growing burden of diabetes and heart disease and to new spillovers of infectious diseases from animals to humans as well.

And then there are prices. Worldwide, wholesale food prices, adjusted for inflation, have grown about 50 percent since 1999, and those prices have also grown considerably more volatile, making not just markets but the whole agricultural Rube Goldberg network less reliable. Overall, American grocery prices have grown by almost 21 percen t since President Biden took office, a phenomenon central to the widespread perception that the cost of living has exploded on his watch. Between 2020 and 2023, the wholesale price of olive oil tripled ; the price of cocoa delivered to American ports jumped by even more in less than two years. The economist Isabella Weber has proposed maintaining the food equivalent of a strategic petroleum reserve, to buffer against shortages and ease inevitable bursts of market chaos.

Price spikes are like seismographs for the food system, registering much larger drama elsewhere — and sometimes suggesting more tectonic changes underway as well. More than three-quarters of the population of Africa, which has already surpassed one billion, cannot today afford a healthy diet; this is where most of our global population growth is expected to happen this century, and there has been little agricultural productivity growth there for 20 years. Over the same time period, there hasn’t been much growth in the United States either.

बुराड़ी कांड के 5 साल... 11 लोगों के सुसाइड वाला घर, अब कैसा है वहां का माहौल

दिल्ली के बुराड़ी (burari) का वो मास सुसाइड केस (mass suicide case) जिसने पूरे देश को झकझोर कर रखा दिया था. आज यानि 1 जुलाई को इस कांड को पूरे पांच साल बीत चुके हैं. बता दें, 30 जून 2018 की देर रात 12 बजे से एक बजे के करीब भाटिया परिवार के 11 लोगों ने आत्महत्या (suicide) कर ली थी. अगले दिन उनके शव घर से बरामद किए गए थे. चलिए जानते हैं उस रात की पूरी कहानी विस्तार से....

तारीख 1 जुलाई 2018... जगह दिल्ली का बुराड़ी (Burari) इलाका. यहां संत नगर की गली नंबर-4 के मकान नंबर-530 में चुंडावत परिवार रहता था. वैसे तो मूल रूप से यह परिवार राजस्थान (Rajasthan) के चित्तौड़गढ़ का रहने वाला था. लेकिन 20 साल पहले यह परिवार दिल्ली (Delhi) आकर बस गया. इस परिवार को भाटिया परिवार (Bhatia Family) के नाम से भी जाना जाता था.

इस परिवार की सबसे बड़ी सदस्य नारायणी देवी थीं, जिनकी उम्र 77 साल थी. उनके तीन बेटे थे. जिनमें से एक बेटा राजस्थान में ही रहता है. जबकि, दो बेटे नारायणी देवी के साथ ही बुराड़ी में रहते थे. बड़े बेटे का नाम भुवनेश भाटिया और छोटे बेटे का नाम ललित भाटिया था. भुवनेश की पत्नी का नाम सविता था और उनके तीन बच्चे थे. मेनका, नीतू और ध्रुव. जबकि, ललित की पत्नी का नाम टीना था. उनका एक ही बेटा था शिवम.

इसके अलावा नारायणी देवी की एक बेटी भी थी. जिसका नाम प्रतिभा था. पति की मौत के बाद से प्रतिभा अपनी बेटी प्रियंका के साथ नारायणी देवी के घर में ही रहने लगी थी. प्रियंका एक मल्टीनेशनल कंपनी में काम करती थी और उसकी 15 दिन पहले ही सगाई भी हुई थी.

पड़ोसियों ने देखी भाटिया परिवार की लाश 1 जुलाई 2018 के दिन भुवनेश भाटिया ने अपनी दुकान को नहीं खोला. अमूमन वह सुबह पांच बजे ही अपनी दुकान खोल देते थे. लेकिन कुछ ग्राहक रोज की तरह आए और देखा कि भुवनेश की दुकान तो आज खुली ही नहीं है. बता दें, यह दुकान घर के ग्राउंड फ्लोर पर थी. काफी देर हो गई तो पड़ोसियों ने भाटिया परिवार को फोन लगाया. लेकिन किसी ने भी फोन नहीं उठाया.

एक पड़ोसी ने सोचा कि क्यों न उनके घर जाकर ही पता किया जाए कि आखिर दुकान क्यों नहीं खोली गई है. जैसे ही पड़ोसी घर के अंदर घुसे तो अंदर का नजारा देखते ही उनके होश उड़ गए. वे चिल्लाते हुए बाहर आए. दरअसल, घर के अंदर 11 लोगों की लाश पड़ी थी. 9 लोग छत की ग्रिल के सहारे फंदे पर लटके हुए थे. एक महिला खिड़की के सहारे फंदे से लटकी हुई थी. जबकि, बुजुर्ग महिला का शव घर के मंदिर वाली जगह पर पड़ा हुआ था.

बात तेजी से फैली और पुलिस को सूचना दी गई. मौके पर पहुंची पुलिस के भी कमरे का मंजर देख होश उड़ गए. पूरा का पूरा भाटिया परिवार मर चुका था. छत पर सिर्फ उनका कुत्ता टॉमी बंधा हुआ था जो जोर-जोर से भौंक रहा था. शुरू की छानबीन में ऐसा लगा जैसे किसी चोरों के गिरोह ने उनका कत्ल कर दिया हो. लेकिन घर से कोई भी सामान गायब नहीं हुआ था. इसलिए ये मामला खुदकुशी का लगने लगा.

पुलिस के हाथ लगी डायरी पुलिस ने घर की और भी तलाशी ली तो उनके हाथ एक डायरी लगी. जिससे इस केस में एक नया मोड़ आ गया. इसके अलावा और भी डायरी मिलीं. इन सभी डायरियों में अजीब से रिचुअल्स और हवन आदि के बारे में लिखा था. इन सभी बातों को अलग हैंडराइटिंग्स में लिखा हुआ था, जिससे लगा कि घर के ही कुछ सदस्य इन डायरियों को रोज लिखते थे.

इनमें लिखा था कि कैसे एक इंसान अपनी आंख और मुंह को बंद करके डर के आगे जीत पा सकता है. कैसे इंसान को मुक्ति मिलती है. इंसानी शरीर तो अस्थायी है लेकिन आत्मा स्थायी है और वो कभी नहीं मरती. इस डायरी में एक रिचुअल का पालन करने को कहा गया था. लिखा था कि घर के 11 लोग अगर इस रिचुअल का पालन करेंगे तो उनकी सारी परेशानियां दूर हो जाएंगी. और उन्हें मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होगी.

इसले अलावा भी डायरी में काफी अजीबो-गरीब बातें लिखी थीं. जिनका सार यह निकल रहा था कि आपको अपना शरीर त्यागने की प्रक्रिया करनी है. लेकिन आप उसमें मरेंगे नहीं. बल्कि, घर के मुखिया भोपाल चुंडावत, जिनकी साल 2007 में मौत हो गई थी. वो आपको बचा लेंगे. साथ ही आपको अपने दर्शन भी देंगे.

परिवार फॉलो करता था डायरी में लिखी बातें इसके अलावा भगवान की किताबें और ग्रंथ भी थे. पुलिस के मुताबिक, यह परिवार डायरी में लिखी बातों को फॉलो करता था. पुलिस ने इस परिवार के अन्य रिश्तेदारों और पड़ोसियों से बात की तो पता चला कि ये सभी बहुत ही धार्मिक प्रवृति के लोग थे. किसी से भी उनकी कोई दुश्मनी नहीं थी. सबसे अच्छे से बात करते थे. सबका आदर सम्मान करते थे. रिश्तेदारों ने तो इसे हत्या बताया. लेकिन पुलिस जांच में कहीं भी इस बात का कोई सबूत नहीं मिला जो इस मास सुसाइड को हत्या दर्शाए.

फिर भी पोस्टमार्टम के लिए शवों को भेजा गया. रिपोर्ट में भी साफ हो गया कि यह एक मास सुसाइड केस ही था. मृत लोगों में सबसे लेट मौत हुई थी नारायणी देवी की. वो एकमात्र विक्टिम थीं जिन्होंने फांसी नहीं लगाई थी. उन्हें कुछ जहरीला पदार्थ दिया गया था, जिससे उनकी मौत हुई.

2007 में हुई थी भोपाल दास की मौत पुलिस ने जब इसकी डिटेल रिपोर्ट पेश की तो केस का अच्छे से पता लग सका. दरअसल, साल 2007 में नारायणी देवी के पति भोपाल दास की मौत हो गई थी. उनकी मौत से सबसे ज्यादा सदमा छोटे बेटे ललित को लगा था. क्योंकि वह अपने पिता के बेहद करीब थी. उनकी मौत के बाद से वह गुमसुम रहने लगा और अजीब हरकतें भी करने लगा.

वो परिवार में अक्सर यह बोला करता कि उसके अंदर भोपाल दास की आत्मा आती है. परिवार पहले तो यह सब बातें नहीं मानता था. लेकिन भोपाल दास के जाने के बाद परिवार की आर्थिक स्थिति जब खराब हुई तो उसे ललित ने ही ठीक किया. इसका कारण ललित ने परिवार को भोपाल दास का सपने में आना ही बताया. उसने कहा कि भोपाल दास द्वारा कही बातों को वो मानता है इसीलिए घर के हालात ठीक हुए हैं. परिवार अब ललित की बातों को थोड़ा-थोड़ा मानने लगा था.

हादसे में चली गई थी ललित की आवाज इसके 6 साल बाद ललित अपनी प्लाइवुड की दुकान में काम कर रहा था. तभी एक बड़ी सी लड़की उसके सिर पर गिर गई जिसके कारण ललित की आवाज चली गई. भाटिया परिवार ने उसका कई जगह इलाज करवाया लेकिन वह ठीक नहीं हुआ. लेकिन कुछ ही साल बाद एक दिन अचानक से ललित बोलने लग पड़ा. परिवार यह देखकर हैरान रह गया. तब ललित ने बताया कि भोपाल दास ने ही उसे ठीक किया है क्योंकि वो रोज उसके सपने में आते हैं.

अब परिवार पूरी तरह मान गया कि हो न हो भोपाल दास जरूर ललित के सपने में आते हैं. दिन बीतते गए और ललित अब और अजीबोगरीब बातें करने लगा था. वो जो भी बोलता परिवार भोपाल दास का आदेश समझकर उसे करते. ललित की बहन की बेटी प्रियंका 33 साल की थी. उसकी शादी नहीं हो रही थी. तब ललित ने परिवार को केले के पेड़ की पूजा करने को कहा. हैरानी की बात ये थी कि उसके बाद प्रियंका का रिश्ता भी हो गया.

इसके अलावा ललित के घर की दीवार पर ग्यारह पाइप भी लगवाए. कॉन्ट्रेक्टर तो तो उसने यही कहा कि घर की वेंटिलेशन के लिए उसने ये पाइप लगवाए हैं. लेकिन लोग इसे भी बाद में ललित की डायरी में लिखी बातों से जोड़ने लगे.

परिवार से अजीब रिचुअल करने को कहा फिर एक दिन ललित ने अपनी पत्नी टीना के साथ मिलकर घर के सभी लोगों को एक अजीब रिचुअल करने को कहा. उसने कहा कि भोपाल दास सभी से नाखुश हैं. उनका कहना है कि परिवार के लोग आजकल मनमानी से चल रहे हैं. घर में कोई भी अनुशासन का पालन नहीं कर रहा है. अगर वे इस रिचुअल का पालत करते हैं तो भोपाल दास उन्हें दर्शन देंगे और उनकी गलतियों को माफ भी कर देंगे. साथ ही इससे उन्हें मोक्ष की भी प्राप्ति होगी.

न जाने क्यों पर परिवार भी इस चीज के लिए राजी हो गया. फिर इस रिचुअल की तैयारी की गई. ललित ने कहा कि इस रिचुअल को रात को 12 बजे से 1 बजे के बीच करना होगा. सभी के हाथ और पैर बांध दिए जाएंगे. आंखों को बंद कर दिया जाएगा और मुंह में कपड़ा ठूंस दिया जाएगा. सभी को एक आवाज आएगी. तभी भोपाल दास उन्हें दर्शन देंगे. उस समय उन्हें घबराना नहीं है. क्योंकि भोपाल दास उन्हें बचा लेंगे.

रिचुअल के लिए चुना गया 30 जून का दिन पहले तो इस रिचुअल के लिए कोई और दिन चुका गया था. लेकिन उस समय उनके घर कोई मेहमान आ गया. इसलिए इस रिचुअल के लिए परिवार ने 30 जून का दिन चुना. घर के सभी लोगों से कह दिया गया था कि बाहर किसी को भी इस बारे में कुछ नहीं बताना है. परिवार न जाने क्यों ललित की बातों में आ गया. जबकि, उन्हें पता था कि जो काम वो करने जा रहे हैं उससे उनकी मौत हो सकती है. लेकिन ललित ने उनके दिमाग में भर रखा था कि भोपाल दास उन्हें बचा लेंगे.

इसलिए परिवार ने अगले दिन के खाने के लिए चने भी भिगो रखे थे. ध्रुव और शिवम तो 9वीं कक्षा के छात्र थे. दोनों ने अपनी ड्रेस भी प्रेस करके रखी थी क्योंकि अगले दिन उन्हें स्कूल जाना था. रात को करीब साढ़े आठ बजे परिवार ने जोमैटो से रोटियां ऑर्डर कीं. फिर सभी लोग घर में आ गए और पूजा पाठ किया गया. इसके बाद ललित और टीना ने सबके हाथ बांधे और मुंह में कपड़ा ठूंस दिया. बाद में एक दूसरे के हाथ भी बांधे.

डायरी में लिखी बातों के हिसाब से नारायणी देवी को कुछ पिला दिया गया था क्योंकि वे काफी बुजुर्ग थीं और इस रिचुअल को फॉलो नहीं कर सकती थीं. इसके बाद जैसे ही सभी लोग रिचुअल को फॉलो करने लगे. सभी की मौत हो गई. उन्होंने अपने कुत्ते को भी छत से बांध दिया था. ताकि वो भौंके नहीं. बता दें, इस रिचुअल को करने से पहले उन्होंने 6 दिन तक प्रैक्टिस भी की थी.

लोगों ने उस गली से जाना ही छोड़ दिया इसके बाद सभी भी लाशें अगले दिन यानि 1 जुलाई 2018 को मिलीं. इस मास सुसाइड की घटना ने पूरे देश को झकझोर कर रख दिया था. संत नगर की गली नंबर-3 से तो लोगों ने आना-जाना ही छोड़ दिया. पड़ोसियों का तो ये तक कहना था कि यहां से रात को अजीब आवाजें आती हैं. लोग इसे पैरानॉर्मल एक्टिविटी से भी जोड़कर देखने लगे.

कुछ किराएदार आए, लेकिन जल्द ही मकान को छोड़ गए इसके कुछ दिन बाद कुछ किराएदार यहां रहने भी आए लेकिन वो भी यह बोलकर मकान छोड़ गए कि रात को यहां अजीब आवाजें आती हैं. हालांकि, इसके बाद 2020 में मकान को एक नया किरदार मिल गया है, जो बीते चार सालों से अपने परिवार के साथ यहां रह रहा है. इस किराएदार का नाम मोहन हैं.

मृत परिवार को अच्छे से जानते थे मोहन मकान में रह रहे मोहन ने बताया कि पहले उनकी बुराड़ी मुख्य रोड पर डायग्नोस्टिक लैब थी. वह मृत परिवार को अच्छी तरह जानते थे और उनके अच्छे संबंध थे. लेकिन परिवार में क्या चल रहा है, इसे लेकर किसी भी अन्य शख्स को जानकारी नहीं थी. भाटिया परिवार की मौत के लगभग डेढ़ साल बाद उन्होंने घर के निचला हिस्सा किराए पर ले लिया.

अब उसी मकान में मोहन डायग्नोस्टिक लैब व एक किराना की दुकान चला रहे हैं. वहीं, अब दोबारा से इस गली से लोग आते-जाते हैं. जहां 5 साल पहले इस गली में दहशत का माहौल था. तो अब वहां लोग नॉर्मल लाइफ जी रहे हैं. लेकिन आज भी जब वे उस रात की घटना को याद करते हैं तो सिहर उठते हैं.

Study links TB strain infectivity to shared geographic background

For some forms of tuberculosis, the chances that an exposed person will become infected depend on whether the individual and the bacteria share a hometown, according to a new study comparing how different strains move through mixed populations in cosmopolitan cities.

Results of the research, led by Harvard Medical School scientists and published in Nature Microbiology , provide the first hard evidence of long-standing observations that have led scientists to suspect that pathogen, place, and human host collide in a distinctive interplay that influences infection risk and fuels differences in susceptibility to infection.

The study strengthens the case for a long-standing hypothesis in the field that specific bacteria and their human hosts likely co-evolved over hundreds or thousands of years, the researchers said.

The findings may also help inform new prevention and treatment approaches for tuberculosis, a wily pathogen that sickens more than 10 million people and causes more than a million deaths worldwide each year, according to the World Health Organization.

In the current analysis, believed to be the first controlled comparison of TB strains' infectivity in populations of mixed geographic origins, the researchers custom built a study cohort by combining case files from patients with TB in New York City, Amsterdam, and Hamburg. Doing so gave them enough data to power their models.

The analysis showed that close household contacts of people diagnosed with a strain of TB from a geographically restricted lineage had a 14% lower rate of infection and a 45% lower rate of developing active TB disease compared with those exposed to a strain belonging to a widespread lineage.

The study also showed that strains with narrow geographic ranges are much more likely to infect people with roots in the bacteria's native geographic region than people from outside the region.

The researchers found that the odds of infection dropped by 38% when a contact is exposed to a restricted pathogen from a geographic region that doesn't match the person's background, compared with when a person is exposed to a geographically restricted microbe from a region that does match their home country. This was true for people who had lived in the region themselves and for people whose two parents could each trace their heritage to the region.

This pathogen-host affinity points to a shared evolution between humans and microbes with certain biological features rendering both more compatible and fueling the risk for infection, the researchers said.

"The size of the effect is surprisingly large," said Maha Farhat, the Gilbert S. Omenn, MD '65, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the Blavatnik Institute at HMS. "That's a good indicator that the impact on public health is substantial."

Why differences matter

Thanks to the growing use of genetic sequencing, researchers have observed not all circulating strains are created equal. Some lineages are widespread and responsible for much of the TB around the world, while others are prevalent only in a few restricted areas. Given that the complex nature of TB transmission in high-incidence settings where people often have multiple exposures to different lineages, researchers have not been able to compare strains under similar conditions and have been left to speculate about possible explanations for the differences between strains.

Many factors increase the risk of contracting tuberculosis from a close contact. One of the best predictors of whether a person will infect their close contacts is bacterial load, measured by a test called sputum smear microscopy, which shows how many bacteria a person carries in their respiratory system.

But the new study showed that for geographically restricted strains, whether a person has ancestors who lived where the strain is common was an even bigger predictor of infection risk than bacterial load in the sputum. In the cases analyzed in the study, this risk of common ancestry even outweighed the risk stemming from having diabetes and other chronic diseases previously shown to render people more susceptible to infection.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence of the importance of paying attention to the wide variation between different lineages of tuberculosis and to the details of how different lineages of tuberculosis interact with different host populations.

Previous studies have shown that some genetic groups of TB are more prone to developing drug resistance and that TB vaccines appear to work better in some places than others. There is also evidence that some treatment regimens might be better suited to some strains of TB than others.

"These findings emphasize how important it is to understand what makes different strains of TB behave so differently from one another, and why some strains have such a close affinity for specific, related groups of people," said Matthias Groeschel, research fellow in biomedical informatics in Farhat's lab at HMS; resident physician at Charité, a university hospital in Berlin; and the study's first author.

In addition to the analysis of clinical, genomic, and public health data, the researchers also tested the ability of different strains of TB to infect human macrophages, a type of immune cell that TB hijacks to cause infection and disease. The researchers grew cells from donors from different regions. Once again, cell lines from people with ancestry that matched the native habitat of a restricted strain of tuberculosis bacteria were more susceptible to the germs than cells from people from outside the area, mirroring the results of their epidemiologic study.

Until now, most experiments on the interaction between human immune cells and TB have not compared how TB interacts with cells of hosts from different populations or places, the researchers said.

While this experiment was not designed to capture insights about the mechanism underlying the affinity between human and TB populations sharing geographic backgrounds, it highlights the importance of using multiple strains of TB and cells from diverse populations to inform treatment and prevention. It also points to the need for more basic research to understand the genomic and structural differences in how bacterial and host cells interface, the researchers said.

"It's so important to appreciate that the great diversity of human and tuberculosis genetics can significantly impact how people and microbes respond to one another and to things like drugs and vaccines," Farhat said. "We have to incorporate that into the way we think about the disease."

"We're at the very beginning of appreciating the importance of that diversity," Groeschel said. "There's so much more to learn about how it might impact the efficacy of drugs, vaccines, and the course that disease takes in different strains."

Advances in gene sequencing create a new puzzle

While the closely related but distinct genetic groups of tuberculosis were discovered with more traditional methods of genotyping, the widespread use of whole genome sequencing by public health departments around the world allowed doctors and researchers to better profile TB germs and track outbreaks and drug resistance genetically.

The realization that highly localized stains didn't spread well to other regions led researchers to speculate that regionally constrained strains were less infectious than widespread strains. Since the constrained strains persisted within their limited ranges, some researchers speculated that localized populations of the bacteria may have coevolved with their human hosts, making different human populations more susceptible to different types of TB. This could also mean, researchers hypothesized, that different strains of TB would have different susceptibility to different treatments and vaccines. For example, structural differences in the shape of the bacteria might prevent some drugs from binding effectively with bacteria from different strains.

Until recently, these hypotheses were nearly impossible to test, given the differences between cultural and environmental conditions that might affect infection rates in different communities and other parts of the world. Furthermore, the fact that the constrained stains strayed from home so rarely made it challenging to gather enough data to measure differences across strains.

Multidisciplinary science cracks the case

To overcome these obstacles, the research team collaborated with public health departments and research teams from the U.S., the Netherlands, and Germany to assemble a massive database integrating tuberculosis case reports, pathogen genetic profiles, and public health records of infection rates among close contacts. The analysis also incorporated demographic details about the social networks of infected people to assess how the different genetic lineages of tuberculosis spread in other populations. In total, the study included 5,256 TB cases and 28,889 close contacts.

"This study is a great example of why it's so important for researchers to collaborate with many different kinds of partners," said Groeschel. "We were able to merge public health data from three big cities and use the powerful computational biology tools that we have access to in academic medicine to answer a complicated question that has important implications for public health and evolutionary biology, vaccine development, and drug research."
