The power of attraction

Chemistry explores the composition, transformation and characteristics of substances and compounds . With the aid of chemical methods, knowledge is gained which is then used to better understand the substances as such and to produce new, synthetic substances. Chemistry plays an important role in the fields of energy supply, the manufacturing of new materials, mobility, health and communication. The sustainable use of resources is also of growing importance.

If you study chemistry at Kiel University, you will be able to work in many sectors . Among these are research and development in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, or various jobs at small and medium sized companies such as the Land Office or Environmental Office at public services. Chemists’ ability to constantly analyse facts critically enables them to work also in fields such as commerce, and in society.

The Department of Chemistry cooperates with numerous universities and research institutions worldwide and is currently involved in research projects on national and international levels. Our teaching staff participate in ERASMUS/SOKRATES exchange programs and DAAD programs. Various projects are supported by the German Research Society (DFG) and third-party funding – which proves the quality of research in chemistry at Kiel University. Among them is the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 677 “Function by Switching” (in German), where chemists work closely with physicists and researchers of material science. Furthermore, the Institute of Physical Chemistry is part of the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean”.

University of Kiel

The CAU sees itself as a university of connected science cultures . Large, socially relevant topics such as inflammation research, nutrition and health, the future ocean, functional nanosystems, as well as interactions between humans and the environment are treated consistently interdisciplinary. This is reflected in numerous publications on relevant research questions and high third party funding.

Why choose our program?

What we offer

How to apply

Go to Application

A new program to address global economic challenges

  • The global economic system is undergoing a fundamental transformation, with rising geopolitical tensions and the transition to a greener global economy. We need novel and improved research to address these significant challenges.
  • The Kiel Institute is dedicated to lead the process as a premier European hub for research in international economics.
  • We are excited to announce the launch of a new doctoral program that aims to become Europe’s leading PhD program in the field of international economics.

Key dates and details:

  • Application start: 1 December 2024 Apply now
  • Two application deadlines: 15. January (early offers) and March 1 (late offers)
  • Program start: September
  • Two main steps: 16 months of coursework/orientation and 3,5 years of research

What distinguishes us?

  • A clear focus on international economics
  • Academic excellence and world-leading external lecturers
  • Policy relevance: we encourage students to do high quality research that matters
  • A small cohort with close supervision and a collegial and supportive atmosphere, striving for at least 50% female students.
  • Generous financial support (5 year funding) and subsidized housing
  • Choose between the Baltic Sea and Berlin

Why choose our program? Outstanding professors

40 Years of experience

  • The program builds on our 40-year track record of training postgraduate students in international economics via the Kiel Institute Advanced Studies Program (ASP). The ASP was originally a 10-months postgraduate degree, with more than 600 successful ASP alumni worldwide.
  • The ASP now raises its ambitions to become a full-fledged, 5-year, high-quality doctoral program that aims for the very top.
