A thesis defense gives you the chance to show off your thesis work and demonstrate your expertise in your field of study. During this one- to two-hour discussion with the members of your thesis committee, you'll have some control over how you present your research, but your committee will ask you some prodding questions to test your knowledge and preparedness. 1. What is your topic, and why did you choose it?

Give a quick summary in just a few sentences on what you've researched. You could certainly go on for hours about your work, but make sure you prepare a way to give a very brief overview of your thesis. Then, give a quick background on your process for choosing this topic.

2. How does your topic contribute to the existing literature? How is it important?

Many researchers identify a need in the field and choose a topic to bridge the gaps that previous literature has failed to cover. For example, previous studies might not have included a certain population, region, or circumstance. Talk about how your thesis enhances the general understanding of the topic to extend the reach beyond what others have found, and then give examples of why the world needs that increased understanding. For instance, a thesis on romaine lettuce crops in desert climates might bring much-needed knowledge to a region that might not have been represented in previous work.

3. What are the key findings of your study?

When reporting your main results, make sure you have a handle on how detailed your committee wants you to be. Give yourself several options by preparing 1) a very general, quick summary of your findings that takes a minute or less, 2) a more detailed rundown of what your study revealed that is 3-5 minutes long, and 3) a 10- to 15-minute synopsis that delves into your results in detail. With each of these responses prepared, you can gauge which one is most appropriate in the moment, based on what your committee asks you and what has already been requested.

4. What type of background research did you do for your study?

Here you'll describe what you did while you were deciding what to study. This usually includes a literary review to determine what previous researchers have already introduced to the field. You also likely had to look into whether your study was going to be possible and what you would need in order to collect the needed data. Did you need info from databases that require permissions or fees?

5. What was your hypothesis, and how did you form it?

Describe the expected results you had for your study and whether your hypothesis came from previous research experience, long-held expectations, or cultural myths.

6. What limitations did you face when writing your text?

It's inevitable — researchers will face roadblocks or limiting factors during their work. This could be a limited population you had access to, like if you had a great method of surveying university students, but you didn't have a way to reach out to other people who weren't attending that school.

7. Why did you choose your particular method for your study?

Different research methods are more fitting to specific studies than others (e.g., qualitative vs. quantitative ), and knowing this, you applied a method that would present your findings most effectively. What factors led you to choose your method?

8. Who formed the sample group of your study, and why did you choose this population?

Many factors go into the selection of a participant group. Perhaps you were motivated to survey women over 50 who experience burnout in the workplace. Did you take extra measures to target this population? Or perhaps you found a sample group that responded more readily to your request for participation, and after hitting dead ends for months, convenience is what shaped your study population. Make sure to present your reasoning in an honest but favorable way.

9. What obstacles or limitations did you encounter while working with your sample?

Outline the process of pursuing respondents for your study and the difficulties you faced in collecting enough quality data for your thesis. Perhaps the decisions you made took shape based on the participants you ended up interviewing.

10. Was there something specific you were expecting to find during your analysis?

Expectations are natural when you set out to explore a topic, especially one you've been dancing around throughout your academic career. This question can refer to your hypotheses , but it can also touch on your personal feelings and expectations about this topic. What did you believe you would find when you dove deeper into the subject? Was that what you actually found, or were you surprised by your results?

11. What did you learn from your study?

Your response to this question can include not only the basic findings of your work (if you haven't covered this already) but also some personal surprises you might have found that veered away from your expectations. Sometimes these details are not included in the thesis, so these details can add some spice to your defense.

12. What are the recommendations from your study?

With connection to the reasons you chose the topic, your results can address the problems your work is solving. Give specifics on how policymakers, professionals in the field, etc., can improve their service with the knowledge your thesis provides.

13. If given the chance, what would you do differently?

Your response to this one can include the limitations you encountered or dead ends you hit that wasted time and funding. Try not to dwell too long on the annoyances of your study, and consider an area of curiosity; for example, discuss an area that piqued your interest during your exploration that would have been exciting to pursue but didn't directly benefit your outlined study.

Your paper likely ties your ideas into those of other researchers, so this could be an easy one to answer. Point out how similar your work is to some and how it contrasts other works of research; both contribute greatly to the overall body of research.

15. What is the future scope of this study?

This one is pretty easy, since most theses include recommendations for future research within the text. That means you already have this one covered, and since you read over your thesis before your defense, it's already fresh in your mind.

16. What do you plan to do professionally after you complete your study?

This is a question directed more to you and your future professional plans. This might align with the research you performed, and if so, you can direct your question back to your research, maybe mentioning the personal motivations you have for pursuing study of that subject.

17. Do you have any questions?

Although your thesis defense feels like an interrogation, and you're the one in the spotlight, it provides an ideal opportunity to gather input from your committee, if you want it. Possible questions you could ask are: What were your impressions when reading my thesis? Do you believe I missed any important steps or details when conducting my work? Where do you see this work going in the future?

Bonus tip: What if you get asked a question to which you don't know the answer? You can spend weeks preparing to defend your thesis, but you might still be caught off guard when you don't know exactly what's coming. You can be ready for this situation by preparing a general strategy. It's okay to admit that your thesis doesn't offer the answers to everything – your committee won't reasonably expect it to do so. What you can do to sound (and feel!) confident and knowledgeable is to refer to a work of literature you have encountered in your research and draw on that work to give an answer. For example, you could respond, "My thesis doesn't directly address your question, but my study of Dr. Leifsen's work provided some interesting insights on that subject…." By preparing a way to address curveball questions, you can maintain your cool and create the impression that you truly are an expert in your field.

After you're done answering the questions your committee presents to you, they will either approve your thesis or suggest changes you should make to your paper. When you’re considering going to graduate school , or you’re about to defend your master’s thesis or PhD dissertation, chances are you’ve come across something called the thesis defense. The thesis defense is arguably one of the most fundamental steps to take in order to attain your graduate degree. Each university will have its own tailored expectations of the thesis defense. Yet, as a whole, the thesis defense is an opportunity for you to demonstrate in front of the committee the extensive research you’ve completed and the critical skills you’ve developed. Due to the critical nature of the various thesis defense questions/dissertation defense questions you’ll be asked, it’s best to be prepared and practice with other students. Try to even attend a thesis defense if you can. Overall, consider the thesis defense as a chance to showcase how you’ll best contribute to that academic field of research.

The thesis defense can range from anywhere between one to two hours, depending on your program. As a whole, you’ll present how you decided to choose this topic of research, what you discovered, and what those findings led you to realize. The committee – those overseeing and critiquing your thesis defense – will then ask you a series of thesis defense questions, as well as your written thesis because they’ll have already read it by then. In most cases, by the end of the questioning, the committee will either decide to approve your thesis or give you possible suggestions on how to reapproach your research.

How to best prepare for thesis defense questions

Much like preparing for the GRE or deciding what graduate program you wanted to apply to at the beginning of your graduate academic journey, familiarizing yourself with what to expect on the day of your thesis defense will only lighten the burden. Whether you’re a new master’s student or considering how to pursue a PhD , it’s important to know ahead of time how to best prepare for the thesis defense questions. If you’re getting ready to defend the master’s thesis or prepare for dissertation defense questions, see how you can answer the following thesis defense questions that might come your way on the day of the presentation.

1)  What does your research focus on?

Be ready to state right away the synopsis of your research. Although it may seem like a simple, straightforward question, the committee will be looking to see the terminology you use when describing the focus of your research.

2) What influenced you to research this topic?

The committee will be interested in knowing what influenced you to choose this specific topic of research. What motivated you? Shape your answer in a way that reflects the field of study your topic of interest is in and the issues that stood out to you.

3) What does your study encompass and cover?

Consider the parameters and scope of your research for your thesis defense. By defining and delineating the grounds that you covered with your research, you will inform the committee with a better understanding of how you decided to focus on your topic of interest.

4) what was the goal of your research.

This question will surface often whether you are defending your master’s thesis or preparing for the dissertation defense questions. It’s important to state what your thesis meant to achieve. Think of what the core focus of your thesis is, and state how that was the driving factor in your research.

5) What were your expectations going into this research?

Describe how your hypothesis was formed. Were there any things you had expected or any preconceived notions you had on this topic before you pursued this research? Where did these expectations come from? Did any previous research affect the way you approached your thesis defense as a whole?

This is a great opportunity for you to show what literature you reviewed that led you to pursue the research. Be ready to discuss the literary review of what has already been contributed to this field of study. Reflect on the realizations made when confronting certain data and if it was feasible for you to conduct your research given the existing contributions. Examining this type of literary review will serve you well during the following thesis defense questions.

7)  Who is the targeted audience for this research?

It will be important to state who the targeted audience is, or what types of people will be affected by your research. Will these particular parties benefit from your research? How will they be affected? Consider not just the targeted audience, but also those in parallel groups who may be impacted by your findings.

8)  Why did you choose this title for your research? – thesis defense questions

The way you have named and titled your research will convey what you consider most important to the committee. What does your research try to explain in the given title? Is there a reason you chose the specific words in your title to convey a main point? The committee will want to see the intentionality of every word here and how it relates back to your research.

9)  How did you conduct your research questions and did your approach change?

While you were preparing and conducting your research, you might have found that your research questions were changing, depending on the sample you were studying. Oftentimes, if you are utilizing qualitative research methodology, the types of qualitative questions may change based on the answer. How did that change affect your research process? Did you have to shift your approach to the subject matter or reconsider focus groups?

10)  What impact does your research have on the existing literature?

Reflect on how your research made a contribution to the overall understanding of the field at hand. Think of why this was necessary and state that concisely. This will trickle into other thesis defense questions.

11)  Did you address any gaps in the field of your research?

Answering this thesis defense question will show how significant the findings of your research are. The goal of anyone’s research is to fill in the gaps of a field. Why did the pre-existing literature not suffice to address the focus of your research?

12)  What did you come across during your research?

It helps to have options of how you’ll convey this. Try to be prepared to summarize in detail, within a minute, what your findings were. Then see what you can paraphrase in 5 minutes. How about in 10 minutes? Doing so will assist you in identifying the most relevant piece of information based on how the committee asks you this thesis defense question.

13)  Did you find anything unexpected or surprising during your research process? – thesis defense questions

This would be a good opportunity for you to state how any surprises you came across helped you make certain decisions about your research. While you defend the master’s thesis and think of how you’ll prepare for the PhD dissertation defense questions, this is a “curveball” moment that demonstrates how you took charge of the challenge presented and continued your research despite what you had confronted.

14)  Under what parameters is your research valid?

Parameters were mentioned in question 3 above, but consider the specific conditions that would need to be in place for your findings to be valid. What are the elements that would have to be in place? Be ready to identify these during this thesis defense question.

15)  What were the challenges when conducting your research?

Were there any roadblocks you faced when gathering your data? Did you have to reconsider your research methodology at all? Identifying this will help the committee understand the direction and trajectory of your research.

16)  What were the challenges when working with your subject matter?

If you were interviewing people, did the focus groups not adhere to what you had asked them to do? Why? Walk the committee through your approach here.

17)  Why did you choose the research methodology that you chose?

While you’re defending the master’s thesis or answering dissertation defense questions, you’ll be asked specific questions about your research methodology. Was it qualitative? Quantitative? Why? What made you believe that this would be the most effective way to conduct your research?

18)  How did you form your hypothesis?

Tie back in your expectations for your research and consider what you thought the expected results would be for this thesis defense question. Were there any factors, both past or recent, that had helped shape your hypothesis?

19)  How did you gather the data to conduct your research and what sources did you use?

Recount what steps you took to decide how to access the data. Did certain libraries offer more resources? Was there any censorship that you came across that posed as a roadblock to collecting data?

20)  What are the practical implications of your research?

For both master’s and PhD students, this is always an important thesis defense question to keep in mind. In life outside of the academic institution, how will your research be of practical use to society? It’s a question that most graduate students ask about themselves before graduating, so it’s best to know how to answer this one about your research!

21)  How did you decide what samples to study in the research you found? What was your approach in using sample groups?

For example, if you used sample or focus groups, how did you go about selecting these groups? How did you get access to the data here? Don’t be hesitant to state the challenges you might have faced while doing so. As long as you frame it in a way that helps provide a more intricate portrait of the trajectory of your research, you’re on the right path.

22)  What are the independent and dependent variables in your research?

Use this thesis defense question to show how balanced your research methodology was by naming the different factors. How did the independent variables affect how the dependent variables changed?

As a master’s student defending your master’s thesis or as a PhD candidate preparing for your dissertation defense questions, you are already a researcher. And as a researcher, you must present what else must be done in your field of research on top of what you’ve accomplished. What does your research further suggest?

24)  What did you ultimately gather from your research? What did you learn during and after the process? – thesis defense questions 

Aside from stating your findings as a whole, this would be a good moment to express if you found anything significant outside of your thesis that you hadn’t expected. Was there something you learned while gathering your data or writing up your text that you never thought you’d come across?

It’s not uncommon for master’s or PhD students to not know exactly what they want to do once they graduate. But for this last thesis defense question, it’s good to have a solid answer that will tie back into the research you’ve done. Do you have further research plans in this field? Do you want to pursue a profession that would enable this and strengthen the practical reality of it?

10 Research Question Examples to Guide your Research Project

The research question is one of the most important parts of your research paper , thesis or dissertation . It’s important to spend some time assessing and refining your question before you get started.

The exact form of your question will depend on a few things, such as the length of your project, the type of research you’re conducting, the topic , and the research problem . However, all research questions should be focused, specific, and relevant to a timely social or scholarly issue.

Once you’ve read our guide on how to write a research question , you can use these examples to craft your own.

Research question Explanation
The first question is not enough. The second question is more , using .
Starting with “why” often means that your question is not enough: there are too many possible answers. By targeting just one aspect of the problem, the second question offers a clear path for research.
The first question is too broad and subjective: there’s no clear criteria for what counts as “better.” The second question is much more . It uses clearly defined terms and narrows its focus to a specific population.
It is generally not for academic research to answer broad normative questions. The second question is more specific, aiming to gain an understanding of possible solutions in order to make informed recommendations.
The first question is too simple: it can be answered with a simple yes or no. The second question is , requiring in-depth investigation and the development of an original argument.
The first question is too broad and not very . The second question identifies an underexplored aspect of the topic that requires investigation of various  to answer.
The first question is not enough: it tries to address two different (the quality of sexual health services and LGBT support services). Even though the two issues are related, it’s not clear how the research will bring them together. The second integrates the two problems into one focused, specific question.
The first question is too simple, asking for a straightforward fact that can be easily found online. The second is a more question that requires and detailed discussion to answer.

The second question takes a specific angle to make an original argument, and has more relevance to current social concerns and debates.

For a smaller research project or thesis, it could be narrowed down further to focus on the effectiveness of drunk driving laws in just one or two countries.

Where do the research question and thesis statement go in a paper?

My professor asked me to place both a research question and a thesis in my research paper. He said the thesis should answer the research question, which I understand, but usually my professors want me to put one or the other at the end of the introduction, not both. Where am I supposed to put them? Am I supposed to change the research question to a statement like a hypothesis?

Your introduction should frame the course of your paper, which is written to answer a particular research question. Your thesis statement is your stance or answer to that question.

Let me illustrate this with an example I just made up:

"...and so, there is no general consensus among philosophers concerning the solution to Schmidt's Banana Paradox. The field is split down the middle: many hold Quintessential Bananaism to be true, and an equal number are vigorous proponents of Apathetic Bananaism.

"However, it can be said that Quintessential Bananaism is the only logical solution to Schmidt's Paradox. This is for three reasons..."

See how I posed both a question and answer? My research question ("What is the solution to this problem?") is clearly stated, as is my thesis ("The only logical solution is this.") When I write papers, this is usually what I aim to do. I start with a hook, introduce the topic, come to the issue and pose a solution. I can then spend the rest of my paper going over the issue in greater depth and giving support to my argumentation.

Ultimately, don't be afraid to ask your professor for clarification. I don't know what type of research paper you're writing, but in general this format should work: Hook, introduce, question, answer...and copious elaboration.

As I understand the term, a thesis statement summarizes your expected outcome at the end of the introduction, right after the research question.

The structure of your introduction would look something like this:

  • Introduction
  • What are you interested in?
  • Why is this relevant?
  • What is the current state of the research on this question?
  • What is the research question that you derive from both your interest and the state of the research?
  • What do you think will be the answer to that question? ← your thesis statement
  • The rest of your paper ...

Frequently Asked Questions about the Current Status of Dimethyl Tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA or Dacthal) and Anticipated Path Forward

On August 6, 2024, EPA announced the emergency suspension of all registrations of the pesticide dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA or Dacthal) under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). DCPA is a pesticide registered to control weeds in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings, but is primarily used on crops such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and onions.

EPA took this action because unborn babies of pregnant farmworkers and others near application sites who are exposed to DCPA, sometimes without even knowing the exposure has occurred, could experience changes to fetal thyroid hormone levels, and these changes are generally linked to low birth weight, impaired brain development, decreased IQ, and impaired motor skills later in life, some of which may be irreversible.

The suspension marks the first time in almost 40 years that EPA has taken this type of emergency action, following several years of unprecedented efforts by the Agency to require the submission of long-overdue data and then assess and address the risk this pesticide poses.

The emergency order of suspension, prohibits anyone from distributing, selling, shipping, or carrying out other similar activities for any pesticide product containing DCPA. EPA is working closely with AMVAC, the sole manufacturer of DCPA, on a return program for existing DCPA products.

On August 19, 2024, EPA received a request from AMVAC to voluntarily cancel the remaining products containing DCPA. EPA is currently working to process those requests, which includes publishing the voluntary product cancellation request for public comment.

EPA will continue to provide updates as they are available.

A1: EPA issued its emergency suspension to protect the unborn babies of pregnant farmworkers, pregnant people who handle DCPA products, and other pregnant persons near application sites.

EPA has not identified risks from consuming foods with DCPA residues as a result of the use of DCPA on crops as allowed by registered labels. However, based on a number of conservative assumptions, EPA has identified potential risks from consuming drinking water containing DCPA residues for areas near where DCPA applications have occurred in the past. EPA models estimated drinking water concentrations based on all labeled uses for DCPA, and assumes that all applications in a watershed occur at the same time, which results in high-end estimated concentrations. With the immediate suspension and upcoming permanent cancellation of all DCPA products, there will be no additional contribution to drinking water from DCPA. EPA has posted the finalized DCPA dietary and drinking water assessments in docket ID EPA-HQ-OPP-2011-0374 at www.regulations.gov .

A2: The emergency suspension does not change the tolerances for DCPA. However, changes to DCPA tolerances may be necessary in the future. EPA will generally initiate the process to revoke tolerances under FFDCA after all products containing that active ingredient have been canceled and the tolerances are not needed for imported food.

A3: EPA has engaged with state lead agencies to ensure they are aware of EPA’s decision. The emergency suspension prohibits anyone from distributing, selling, shipping, or carrying out other similar activities for any pesticide product containing DCPA. It also means that no person can continue using existing stocks of those products. EPA and the registrant, AMVAC, have begun discussing a return program, which would include tracking of the remaining stock of DCPA products and working with stakeholders and state partners to ensure compliance with the order.

Engaging in the activities prohibited by the order constitute unlawful acts pursuant to FIFRA Section 12(a)(2)(J). EPA has authority under sections 9 and 14 of FIFRA to pursue civil and criminal enforcement actions when appropriate.

A4: The Agency completed a use, usage, and benefits assessment in spring 2023. In 2018 and 2020, US growers reported applying an average of approximately 84,000 lbs. of DCPA active ingredient annually. DCPA applications were made primarily to broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and dry onions, mostly in California.

DCPA was used most widely on broccoli where about 14% of the crop was treated. Otherwise, usage was uncommon (e.g., 5% of cauliflower, 3% of cabbage, and less than 2.5% of dry onion acreage treated). A 2021 survey of pesticide usage in turf, including golf courses, and ornamentals suggests little to no usage of DCPA on these use sites.

A5: There are alternative herbicides for crops where DCPA is used. For onions, other herbicides include pendimethalin and bensulide. For crops like broccoli and cabbage, other herbicides such as bensulide and napropamide are available but may be less effective or could damage the crop. For broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower grown from transplants instead of from seed, oxyfluorfen is also available. EPA included an analysis of alternatives to DCPA in its Assessment of Dimethyl Tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA) (PC: 078701) Use, Usage, and Benefits , which is referenced in the emergency order and is available in the DCPA registration review docket. EPA also consulted with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to further understand how growers use DCPA and the alternatives to this pesticide prior to issuing the suspension.

A6: Growers should contact their retailer or distributor for further guidance on return of DCPA products in their possession, and all parties may also contact AMVAC as needed for further information on the return program. The emergency order prohibits anyone from distributing, selling, shipping, or carrying out other similar activities for any pesticide product containing DCPA, other than returning product to AMVAC. It also prohibits continued use of existing stocks of those products. EPA is working closely with AMVAC, the sole manufacturer of DCPA, on a return program for existing DCPA products. AMVAC is developing a comprehensive plan designed to identify existing stocks held by distributors, retailers, and end-users, track any remaining DCPA products, and coordinate an effective and efficient collection process. EPA and AMVAC are regularly communicating on the status of the return program.

A7: DCPA products were used primarily in agricultural settings and commercial ornamentals (such as those in nurseries). There were no products registered for use on home lawns. There were registered uses on golf course and athletic field turf, which did have the potential to result in exposure to people working or playing on recreational turf such as golf courses. However, recent usage data suggest little to no recent usage of DCPA in turf or commercial ornamentals.

A8: In August 2023, EPA suspended the registration for the DCPA technical-grade product, which is used to manufacture DCPA products for end users, under FIFRA Section 3(c)(2)(B), due to AMVAC’s delay in providing the data EPA requested nearly a decade before. The 2023 suspension did not affect DCPA end-use products and only prohibited sale and distribution by AMVAC to manufacturers of those products. In November 2023, the suspension was lifted after AMVAC fulfilled the terms of a settlement agreement with the Agency by submitting the required data.

On August 6th, under FIFRA Section 6(c), and based on imminent hazard to the unborn babies of pregnant farmworkers, pregnant people who handle DCPA products, and other pregnant persons who live near application sites, EPA issued an emergency order for the first time in almost 40 years. This means that no person in any state may distribute, sell, ship, or carry out other similar activities for any pesticide containing DCPA. This suspension will remain in effect until completion of cancellation proceedings or unless lifted following an administrative hearing or challenge in federal court.

Five Key Questions Kamala Harris Should Answer During First Interview

Kamala Harris will sit down for her first unscripted interview with the media on Thursday—here are five topics Newsweek thinks she will be asked about.

The Vice President will be interviewed by CNN , alongside her running mate Tim Walz , in Georgia, where she is currently on a bus tour. The interview is with CNN's chief political correspondent and anchor Dana Bash and will be aired at 9 p.m. ET.

This is a big moment for the Democratic campaign, especially as Harris has long faced criticism for not doing an interview with the media since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her as his replacement.

Harris' willingness to do an interview with the media will likely be one of the main things she is asked about, along with the economy, the border and immigration, her policies on topics such as fracking and women's issues and abortion.

Talking to The Media

The last time Harris did anything close to an interview with the media, was on June 24, 2024, when she spoke to MSNBC's Morning Joe to discuss how the then-Biden campaign was preparing to go after Republicans on abortion rights. Newsweek has compiled a list of her media appearances since then here .

"This interview is pivotal for Harris precisely because she has been dodging the press for weeks," Associate Professor of Political Science at London's UCL School of Public Policy, Thomas Gift told Newsweek .

He said: "It's a not unreasonable expectation that candidates should make themselves available to the media. The fact that Harris hasn't raises the stakes of any interview she does give.

"Even after this evening's joint appearance with Tim Walz, detractors will persist in claiming that Harris should be willing to face tough questions on her own. It's hard not to think that Harris's avoidance of the press reflects a lack of confidence in her ability to perform in unscripted settings."

Some Democratic analysts and talking heads have argued Harris' lack of interviews or press conferences is part of a specific media strategy.

"The vice president is showing all of us that you don't need to do high-profile interviews or press conferences in order to get attention from the media or from voters," Democratic strategist Christy Setzer told The Hill .

The Economy

Multiple polls show that the economy is an important issue for Americans, with 83 percent of respondents to a recent CBS News/YouGov poll saying they believe it is a major factor in this election.

Harris has revealed several of her proposed economic policies, which include raising the level of tax levied on corporations, ending taxes on tipped income and expanding current child tax credit provisions. Newsweek has broken down what she hopes to achieve with her tax policies here .

Earlier this month, Harris told supporters at a campaign rally in North Carolina that she wanted to build an "opportunity economy."

"Building up the middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency because I strongly believe when the middle class is strong, America is strong," she said.

Harris has also unveiled a plan to offer $25,000 in financial assistance to first-time homebuyers , as well as build 3 million new homes over four years in an effort to curb inflation.

"Vice President Harris knows we need to do more to address our housing crisis and that's why she has a plan to end the housing shortage" and will crack down on "corporate landlords and Wall Street banks hiking up rents and housing costs," Dan Kanninen, the campaign's battleground states director, told the Associated Press.

Critics have doubts about these ideas, with Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign's national press secretary calling them part of "Kamalanomics."

Harris' opponent, Donald Trump , at an August 19, 2024, rally in York, Pennsylvania: "She has no clue how'd she paid for $25,000 to every first-time homebuyer, including illegals."

The Border and Immigration

Immigration is another major issue for American voters, with Republicans often hammering Democrats for what they say is being soft on the border.

RNC spokesperson Taylor Rogers previously told Newsweek : "While failed border czar Kamala Harris adopts the Biden Basement strategy to hide from the illegal immigrant invasion created by her radical policies, President Trump will be visiting the southern border again."

Republicans have branded Harris the "border czar," despite her never being given that title. Harris was tasked by President Joe Biden with addressing the "root cause" of migration to the U.S. from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, which resulted in Harris securing $4.2 billion in private-sector investments for employment opportunities in Central America.

But Harris is also facing heat from the left , who fear the Democrats shifting to the right with their immigration policies.

She has promised to reintroduce the bipartisan border bill and be tough when it comes to enforcement and she has also said at recent rallies that she wanted to shore up paths to citizenship for immigrants.

Harris will likely be asked about a resurfaced video from October 2019 , where she says she would close privately-run immigration detention "on day one."

Policies in General

Harris will almost certainly be asked to clear up her position on multiple issues in general, especially environmental ones.

When Harris ran for the presidential nomination in 2020, she vowed to ban fracking and back a Green New Deal which would work to shift the U.S. to 100 percent renewable energy.

As video of these comments resurfaced , Harris' campaign officials confirmed that she would not ban fracking—to The Guardian and several other newspapers.

As vice president, Harris has essentially toed the Biden administration's line on fracking.

Just a few days ago, Trump wrote on Truth Social that it is "very difficult for her to defend her record-setting Flip-Flopping on absolutely everything she once believed in."

A House of Representatives task force has visited the Pennsylvania scene of Donald Trump's attempted assassination. 

Members say they've been left with "more questions than answers" as their investigation proceeds.

The House of Representatives task force, established on July 29, has assumed control over all committee investigations.

Its members were accompanied on their tour by local and state police officials, visiting first the area where Trump took the stage before proceeding to the rooftop site the shooter fired from.

Task force chairman Mike Kelly said the team had "really good people looking for the truth".

He added visiting the scene in Butler, compared to looking at pictures and video, was "the difference between day and night".

"When you're actually here on this surface, when you're walking these grounds, when you're actually going to the building, you're actually up on the roof, looking at where we had people positioned … right away, it's like, 'Okay, I got it,'" he said.

"So for us, the big thing was to be on the ground … be comfortable with the questions we were going to ask."

At least five Secret Service agents have been placed on modified duty and the organisation's then-director Kim Cheatle has resigned in the wake of the shooting.

Ms Cheatle came under intense scrutiny amid questions about how shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to get on top of the building near the rally venue with a rifle.

The rooftop from which Crooks fired was less than 150 metres from the podium. It had been identified as a point of vulnerability days before the rally.

Crooks, who was shot and killed by Secret Service snipers moments after opening fire, appeared to have a clear view of Trump from the roof.

Colorado Democrat and special forces veteran Jason Crow, a former Army Ranger also on the task force, said it was a "fundamental" principle in the military to "secure the high ground".

"Or you always have eyes on the high ground," he said.

"So I definitely took note today that there are a lot of lines of sight that appear to have been unsecured.

"Certainly at this point [there are] a lot more questions than answers."

He declined to comment on who the committee was specifically planning to interview as part of their investigation.

The task force, which is made up of both Republican and Democratic representatives, was approved by the House in a bipartisan vote of 416 to 0.

Mr Kelly said: "When you talk to the members of this committee who have done military service, they look at it … and they say, 'How could this not have been prevented?'

"And the burning question [for me] is always going to be, there was knowledge ahead of time that there was a person of suspicion on that roof and armed.

"The key [thing] was, get the former president of the United States off the podium, then there's nothing that has to take place.

"[Corey] Comperatore would be alive today … not only did we lose Mr Comperatore that day, the Crooks family lost their son."

Investigators have so far struggled to understand why Crooks, a nursing facility aide, carried out the attack.

Ms Cheatle, FBI director Christopher Wray and other security officials said in a briefing call with US senators last month they had yet to find a "political or ideological" motive.

They have also not found any indication of any co-conspirators after searching his home, his laptop and two phones.

There are nothing but good vibes surrounding the Carolina Panthers offense following Saturday's preseason win in Buffalo. The 31 point outburst was kicked off by Bryce Young and the rest of the starting group waltzing down the field and into the Bills' end zone with little resistance. Young and company gave way to Jake Plummer and his rowdy band of backups, who lit up the Bills second and third-stringers for three touchdowns and a field goal in nearly three-and-a-half quarters of work.

The Panthers spent all afternoon turning question marks shrouding their offense into exclamation points, breeding excitement for the unit's first extended action come week one in New Orleans. Unfortunately, the other side of the ball left much to be desired.

Sean McDermott announced early in the week that the Bills would be sitting all of their starters on Saturday. The Panthers starting defense (sans Jadeveon Clowney, Jaycee Horn, and Xavier Woods) lined up against Buffalo's second-unit. Ben DiNucci and his crew proceeded to walk the Panthers first-team defense down the field for a relatively easy scoring drive.

Not great, Bob.

It's preseason, so it must be taken with a grain of salt, but Carolina's inability to slow down an outmatched Buffalo offense full of backups is concerning. DiNucci and company were able to convert four third-down conversions on the drive as Carolina struggled to get stops on money downs. The Bills ended up kicking a field goal, but their quarterback missed a wide open touchdown opportunity when Dicaprio Bootle bit on a double move, leaving Tyrell Shavers uncovered in the end zone.

The Panthers' faced a significant talent drain in their front seven following 2023. Brian Burns, Frankie Luvu, and Yetur Gross-Matos, the team's top three sack producers of last season are out the door. In behind them are a cast of unproven options on the edge looking to make an impact. The secondary was missing two of their leaders in Horn and Woods, but Carolina is still in search of their CB2 as a date with budding superstar wide receiver Chris Olave and the Saints looms.

It's impossible to know how vanilla of a defense Ejiro Evero and his staff played on Saturday. Position coaches Pete Hanson and Jonathan Cooley called the defensive plays on Saturday, letting Evero run point in more of a consultant role. The revered defensive coordinator is hailed for his disguised coverages, varied looks, and his defense's ability to confuse offenses from down to down. Once Evero retakes the reins and gets in his bag, all of these worries may come to pass. Head coach Dave Canales waxes poetic about his defensive coordinator every time he gets the chance, and the second-year defensive play caller likely held his cards close to his chest in this one. And, to be fair, it wasn't all bad.

DJ Johnson, the likely starter opposite Jadeveon Clowney in week one, tallied his first sack of the preseason. Trevin Wallce, although slightly inconsistent, continued to impress onlookers as he flew around the second level. The depth pieces across the defensive line continue to make plays.

However, legitimate questions about the Panthers' defensive personnel exist. Dan Morgan will likely flex his number one waiver priority to bring some depth to positions of need across the defense following Tuesday's cut date. If he doesn't, the Carolina defense may be in trouble.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Caitlin Clark entered the WNBA amid a myriad of questions about how she would handle the transition to pro basketball.

Three months into her professional career, the answer seems clear: Better than expected.

It may have taken a little longer than Clark or the Indiana Fever would have liked, but she is having a record-setting rookie season and crafting a new image along the way.

The No. 1 draft pick entered the league out of Iowa known for her record-breaking NCAA scoring — and particularly those long 3-pointers. Now, she has assists records.

“I’ve always been able to see something happen before it happens,” Clark said recently after the Fever defeated Phoenix and completed their first season sweep of any team since 2020. “I think (Kelsey Mitchell) can tell (now) when I want her to go back door, when I want her to cut off the ball or anything like that. It’s that chemistry you get when you’re used to playing with one another.

“It’s taken time, but I think we’re really starting to get it down.”

Anyone who has watched — and yes, millions of fans are continuing to tune in — can see the difference.

After stumbling out of the gate — the Fever opened this season with nine games in 16 days, losing eight of them with Clark scrambling to learn the playbook and how to fit in. Her turnovers outnumbered her assists. And there were more questions than answers as frustration appeared to creep into the mix.

Since then, Indiana has rebounded by going 12-7, solidifying its playoff position. And all the angst has been replaced by smiles and high fives.

It’s not by happenstance.

Clark challenged during Olympic break

A compressed schedule between the end of Clark’s college season and the start of the WNBA season didn’t give Indiana much time to practice — or for the players to learn one another’s nuances. So during the monthlong Olympic break, coach Christie Sides changed the practice routine and challenged Clark.

“There were a lot of times during drills where they were running certain offenses and I would tell (Clark), and only her, so she would have to tell the players what we’re running or where to go,” Sides said. “I would throw some things out there, some sets we hadn’t run so she had to think it through and put people in the right position.”

Clark has responded and her teammates seem to be taking the cue, too.

In their first two games since the break, Indiana looked impressive in wins against Phoenix and Seattle. The Fever outscored the Storm 33-17 over the final 10 minutes.

Mitchell is 11 of 21 on 3s and has 55 points since the restart while Lexi Hull had a season-high 22 points and went 6 of 7 on 3s in her last game. Forward Aliyah Boston, the 2023 Rookie of the Year, also had nine assists against the Storm after outplaying Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner last Friday. Indiana plays at Minnesota on Saturday.

“You have to adjust,” Mitchell said, describing the learning process with Clark. “She had to transition as a pro, and we had to give her what she needs, be a resource and fill those gaps in. She’s one of those players where her (basketball) IQ is going to take us a lot of places, so you’ve got to figure out where you fit in, knowing how to read and adjust off of her.”

Clark leads WNBA rookies in scoring

Since Clark’s dubious record-setting 10-turnover debut, her assist-to-turnover ratio has jumped from 1.23 to 1 in May and June to 2.19 to 1 in eight games since July 1. Records seem to fall each week:

— She broke the WNBA’s single-season rookie mark for assists Sunday, reaching No. 232 and ending Ticha Penicheiro’s 26-year run as the record holder.

— In her final game before the break, Clark broke the league’s single-game record with 19 assists, capping a run of six double-digit assist games in a seven-game span.

— If Clark continues to average 8.3 assists per game, she could shatter Alyssa Thomas’ single-season record of 316 set last season.

She needs eight 3s to break Rhyne Howard’s rookie record of 85 set in 2022 and with 22 3s over the final 12 games, she would be the seventh WNBA player with 100 in a season.

In addition to the assists, Clark is the league’s highest-scoring rookie at 17.8 points a game.

Clark, Fever most watched in WNBA

Her performance hasn’t quelled the social media controversies, the banter over how she’s treated by opponents or whether she should have made the U.S. Olympic team. And she continues to be a huge fan favorite. The Fever lead the league in both home attendance (16,956) and road attendance (15,306).

Clark is still must-see TV, too.

The game Friday night on ION drew 1.21 million, nearly three times as many viewers as the Connecticut-Dallas game on the same network that night.

The Fever game Sunday on ABC drew 2.23 million viewers, a sharp uptick from two games in a rare CBS broadcast on Saturday — New York-Las Vegas attracted 874,000 viewers while Minnesota-Washington had 577,000.

Only Washington and Dallas have fewer wins than Indiana (13-15) of the teams televised last weekend.

What’s scary for opponents, Clark and her teammates are still getting to know each other. But as she fuels Indiana’s playoff push, her growth and versatility makes playing together much easier.

“I think it’s just been developing the chemistry with my teammates where they can see it and be on the same page,” Clark said of the turnaround. “Now you see people cutting in fast breaks or Kelsey making a backdoor cut. It’s having that chemistry that’s unspoken, like I’m not telling them to do that, but they can just kind of read my eyes and understand.”

Kamala Harris may have sat down with CNN ’s Dana Bash for her first big interview since she became the Democratic presidential nominee last month, but that doesn’t mean she was willing to play the network’s game.

Since getting the nomination, Harris and running mate Tim Walz have connected with voters mostly by doing rallies and working with content creators, while ignoring sit downs with legacy media outlets like The New York Times, CNN, and others.

The policy has some merit from a strategic standpoint, considering many of those outlets have a bad habit of framing their presidential coverage as a “horse race.”

That means that even though mainstream journalists might gripe that Harris needs to answer their questions about what she would do as president, that’s not what they ask when they have the chance to talk with her.

Instead, reporters mostly want her to respond to wackadoodle things Trump said.

But it doesn’t look like Harris is going to do that moving forward, based on how she responded to one of Bash’s Trump-framed questions during the interview.

Bash asked Harris to comment on remarks made by Trump at last month’s National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago about her racial identity.

During his train wreck Q&A at the event, Trump attacked Harris’ biracial identity.

“I didn’t know she was Black until a couple of years ago when she happened to turn Black,” he said. “And now she wants to be known as Black, so I don’t know ― is she Indian or is she Black?”

During the CNN interview on Thursday, Bash asked Harris to comment on Trump’s questioning about her racial identity.

Harris had a succinct response: “Same old, tired playbook. Next question, please.”

Harris’ refusal to answer a question that doesn’t have anything to do with her ability to lead the country got raves from people on X, formerly Twitter.

Many people felt that if the media was going to ask questions like this one, then Harris had a good reason for previously avoiding reporters.
