To receive a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, a student must:

  • satisfy a breadth course requirement, intended to ensure broad knowledge of computer science,
  • satisfy a depth requirement, consisting of an oral qualifying exam presentation with a written report, to ensure the student's ability to do research,
  • submit a written thesis proposal and make an oral presentation about the proposal,
  • write a Ph.D. thesis that must be approved by a dissertation guidance committee and present an oral thesis defense, and
  • satisfy all School of Engineering requirements for the Ph.D. degree, as described in the NYU Tandon School of Engineering bulletin, including graduate study duration, credit points, GPA, and time-to-degree requirements.

Upon entering the program, each student will be assigned an advisor who will guide them in formulating an individual study plan directing their course choice for the first two years. The department will hold an annual Ph.D. Student Assessment Meeting, in which all Ph.D. students will be formally reviewed.

Note: for pre-fall 2015 Ph.D. students, please see the pre-fall 2015 Ph.D. Curriculum.

Program Requirements

Details about Breadth and Depth Requirements, Thesis Proposal and Presentation, and Thesis Defense can be found in the NYU Bulletin.

Program Details

Individual Study Plan

Each incoming Ph.D. student will be assigned to a research advisor, or to an interim advisor, who will provide academic advising until the student has a research advisor. The advisor will meet with the student when the student enters the program to guide the student in formulating an Individual Study Plan. The purpose of the plan is to guide the student’s course choice for the first two years in the program and to ensure that the student meets the breadth requirements. The plan may also specify additional courses to be taken by the student in order to acquire necessary background and expertise. Subsequent changes to the plan must be approved by the advisor.

Sample Plan of Study

Credit Requirements and Transfer Credits

In order to obtain a Ph.D. degree, a student must complete a minimum of 75 credits of graduate work beyond the BS degree, including at least 21 credits of dissertation. A Master of Science in Computer Science may be transferred as 30 credits without taking individual courses into consideration. Other graduate coursework in Computer Science may be transferred on a course-by-course basis. Graduate coursework in areas other than Computer Science can be transferred on a course-by-course basis with approval of the Ph.D. Committee (PHDC). The School of Engineering places some limits on the number and types of transfer credits that are available. Applications for transfer credits must be submitted for consideration before the end of the first semester of matriculation.

Annual Ph.D. Student Assessment Meeting

All Ph.D. students will be formally reviewed each year in a Ph.D. Student Assessment Meeting. The review is conducted by the entire CSE faculty and includes at least the following items (in no particular order):

  • All courses taken, grades received, and GPAs.
  • Research productivity: publications, talks, software, systems, etc.
  • Faculty input, especially from advisors and committee members.
  • Student’s own input.
  • Cumulative history of the student's progress.

As a result of the review, each student will be placed in one of the following two categories, by vote of the faculty:

  • In Good Standing: The student has performed well in the previous semester and may continue in the Ph.D. program for one more year, assuming satisfactory academic progress is maintained.
  • Not in Good Standing: The student has not performed sufficiently well in the previous year. The consequences of not being in good standing will vary, and may include being placed on probation, losing RA/GA/TA funding, or not being allowed to continue in the Ph.D. program.

Following the review, students will receive formal letters which will inform them of their standing. The letters may also make specific recommendations to the student as to what will be expected of them in the following year. A copy of each student’s letter will be placed in the student’s file.

2023 Incoming PhD students standing along the entry stairs of 1 Washington Square North with Director Rohini Pahwa

NYU Silver School of Social Work’s PhD program prepares students to become leading researchers and educators in the promotion of social justice and the health and well-being of marginalized communities nationally and globally.

Our intensive doctoral training competitively positions graduates for top-tier academic and research opportunities—such as faculty positions at leading research universities—cultivating the next wave of independent investigators, scholars, and social work leaders. Building on Silver’s nationally recognized strength in intervention and implementation research and our focus on addressing inequities, the PhD program prepares students to make their own unique contributions to the field of social welfare.

Our rigorous coursework educates students in classic and contemporary theory, cutting-edge quantitative, qualitative and mixed methodologies, and specialized learning in their substantive areas. The opportunity to take electives within the larger university allows students to explore further their areas and methodologies in an interdisciplinary classroom. NYU Silver also prepares students to be educators through training, including in anti-racist pedagogies, and hands-on experience teaching BSW and MSW level courses.

At the heart of our program is the mentored research practicum offering students the opportunity to put their learning into practice. NYU Silver PhD students are paired from day one with a research mentor as part of our  personalized mentoring program , helping them develop competencies in core research, scholarship, and teaching areas.  NYU Silver  Faculty  are renowned for their expertise in several key research areas, including racial and social justice, behavioral health services, child welfare, and aging. Being part of a large Global Network University and located in the diverse and dynamic city of New York, NYU Silver offers an unparalleled environment for the study of areas critical to local, national and global well-being.

In fact, PhD Program Director Dr.  Rohini Pahwa was recently awarded a  five-year, $3.1 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health  to gain insight into the factors that influence the social networks and and mental health services use of Black and Latinx people with serious mental illnesses.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo has received a $750,000 grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation to help sustain three more years of operations for Cultivator , its early-stage startup support program.

The two organizations share a dedicated mission of strengthening the Western New York (WNY) region, in part through fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

The namesake legacy foundation of the Buffalo Bills’ founder and former owner, The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation has a focus on connecting entrepreneurs in Southeast Michigan and WNY to critical resources to start and grow businesses.

Managed by UB’s Office of Business and Entrepreneur Partnerships (BEP), Cultivator nurtures WNY-based startup founders by providing mentorship, investments and other resources to transform their innovative ideas into viable, scalable businesses.

Since its inception three years ago, 66 companies have participated in Cultivator, with more than 70% founded by women or founders of color. UB has invested in 28 companies through Cultivator, with a total of $2.7 million in pre-seed investments made.

The nine-month program, organizers say, democratizes access to startup funding opportunities at the earliest stages of business, welcoming aspiring entrepreneurs from the five counties of WNY — no prior UB affiliation required.

"We are incredibly grateful to the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation for its generous support and partnership to grow the Cultivator program," said Venu Govindaraju, vice president for research and economic development at UB. “This award builds upon the program’s successes and infuses Buffalo’s startup ecosystem with early-stage funding, supporting entrepreneurs in turning their visions into reality and contributing to our region’s economic growth.”

“UB’s Cultivator program is making a significant impact on innovation and entrepreneurship in Western New York,” said Paul Riser, senior program officer, entrepreneurship and economic development at the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. “By supporting the momentum of this program, we are investing in early-stage startups, empowering local entrepreneurs, and driving long-term economic growth and sustainability in our region. Access to resources and mentorship is integral to transforming innovative ideas into thriving businesses that truly benefit our communities.”

Three more startups recently completed — or ‘graduated’ from — Cultivator, increasing the total number of graduate companies to 26. Several graduate companies have secured additional funding from UB and outside investors following the completion of the program.

“Startups leave Cultivator on a greater path to sustainability and success. In turn, the program produces a risk-reduced supply of companies for other regional support organizations and investors that work with later-stage startups,” said Richard Kim, director of startup ventures at UB. “Thanks to this support from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, Cultivator is poised to continue helping to strengthen the startup ecosystem and economic vitality here in Western New York.”

notes

Degree Details

Official degree title.

PhD in Psychology and Social Intervention

Mission Statement

Our  mission is to train social scientists to (a) critically explore  the experiences of people in the contexts and systems in which they develop across the lifespan and (b) use knowledge to address  longstanding inequities in settings and systems. Our work is grounded in the belief that  empirically based knowledge about “persons in settings” is a key mechanism for achieving racial justice, social justice, and equity and for changing systems and settings as well as individuals. Training in PSI is actively interdisciplinary, drawing on theories and approaches from multiple  fields in  psychology (including developmental, community, political,  and social psychology) and other social and behavioral sciences. We conduct research and action in close partnership with key stakeholders while centering community voice and perspectives. Our training goals include fostering students’ abilities to:

(a) Conceptualize and measure (i) individual cognitive and psychosocial development and (ii)  the social settings, systems, and policies in which individuals are embedded;

(b) Understand the psychological impact of various forms of diversity, conflict, and structural inequity among individuals, groups, institutions, communities, and societies; and

(c) Design, improve, implement and evaluate prevention, intervention and policy strategies toward positive social change; and

(d) Utilize state-of-the art quantitative and qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to addressing individual and system-level phenomena.

PSI faculty and students study a wide range of contexts and systems (e.g., families, schools, neighborhoods, programs, juvenile justice systems, social movements,  intergroup contexts, policy contexts and macro-level economic and social structures) and interventions (e.g., psychological, social, educational and health programs and policies), locally, nationally and internationally. Our faculty also conduct research on how social psychological factors, cultural and racial identities, and marginalization influence and interact with people’s experiences of contexts, systems and interventions. New York University provides an ideal global network  for studying many kinds of communities in the US and other regions of the world, including Latin American countries, South Asia, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

PSI faculty collaborate closely with one another, as well as with other social, behavioral, health and policy scientists at NYU and other universities, and with service, community and policy organizations. PSI faculty direct or co-direct a number of affiliated institutes and centers at NYU, including the Institute for Human Development and Social Change, Global TIES for Children, the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools (METRO), and A Research Center for Interconnected Approachs for Suicide Prevention (Arcadia).

You should apply to PSI if you…

  • are committed to conducting applied research to promote justice and equity

want to develop conceptual and methodological skills to understand the interplay between people and settings/social systems

want to take an interdisciplinary approach to research

want to work in partnership with practitioners, policy makers, and community members

The doctoral program in Psychology and Social Intervention at NYU is a small training program; thus, we pay close attention to the match between the candidate and the program’s faculty and resources.  We seek to admit students whose perspectives align with the program as a whole and whose research interests are well-matched with those of one or more faculty members. Rather than admitting students to work with a particular faculty member, admitted students engage in a mutual matchmaking process with faculty at the start of their training to determine their initial mentor and are actively encouraged and supported to work with multiple faculty starting their 3rd year.

The following PSI faculty will be available to serve as primary research mentors for the Fall 2025 admission are:

  • Rezarta Bilali
  • Jorge Cuartas

  • creating/improving, implementing and evaluating prevention and intervention programs; and
  • understanding various forms of diversity and structural inequality among individuals, institutions, communities, and societies.

Students work collaboratively with faculty mentors on a range of activities, including study design, data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation, conference presentations, policy briefs, and evaluation activities.

Program faculty study a wide range of ecologies (e.g., families, schools, neighborhoods, policy contexts, programs) and preventive and policy interventions (e.g., psychological, social, educational and health programs) locally, nationally and internationally. Our faculty also conduct research on how cultural factors and identities influence and interact with experiences of these ecologies and interventions. Our New York City location provides an ideal urban setting for studying many kinds of communities, combined with gateways to the world at large.

In the PSI program, we focus on providing the framework to help you:

develop methodological skills that enable analysis of change over time and within and across levels of human ecology

acquire abilities to apply psychological and social science principles to the understanding of social settings, social/cultural contexts, and social and policy interventions

develop abilities to conceptualize, interpret, evaluate and disseminate evidence-based social and policy interventions; and develop the ethical, interpersonal, organizational, and technical capacities to undertake high-quality professional work in psychology and social intervention

The PSI doctorate trains social scientists to work in a variety of settings so they understand the experiences of people in the contexts and systems in which they develop across the lifespan, and can transform and improve these contexts and systems.

Our degree prepares students for diverse roles in academia and applied research. In the academic arena, our students are well positioned for jobs in psychology, human development, education, public health, and public policy. In the area of applied research, you will be prepared to obtain positions in research organizations, policy institutes, social service agencies, community-based organizations, and advocacy.

These days, an online degree might seem like the obvious choice. However, distance learning is only the right fit for a specific type of student . To determine if that’s you, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What’s your budget? Distance learning is a solid option for students looking to save money, as online students generally avoid paying campus-related costs such as housing and transportation. Additionally, some public universities allow students who exclusively enroll in online courses to pay in-state or otherwise discounted tuition rates.
  • What are your other obligations? Online learning is often the right choice for parents and students who plan to work full or part time while enrolled. Many of the ranked programs in our guide were built for business professionals who want to complete their master’s degrees around their jobs.
  • What’s your learning style? This is possibly the biggest question when determining whether or not online learning is right for you. If you are disciplined, organized and self-motivated, you can likely succeed in a less structured distance learning environment. If you crave regular interactions with a peer group or professor or prefer the structure of a physical classroom, campus-based learning might be a better choice.

There are two important types of accreditation: institutional and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation is the more important of the two. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) and Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) oversee the agencies that manage the institutional accreditation process. These agencies are each responsible for the schools within a group of states, vetting these schools for the quality of their academics, faculty and finances, among other areas.

You should only enroll at institutionally accredited schools, as this is the only way to qualify for federal financial aid. You can check a prospective school’s accreditation by visiting the accreditation page on its website or checking the directory on CHEA’s website.

Programmatic accreditation provides a similar vetting service in specific fields and disciplines. Its importance varies by field; however, programmatic accreditation is relatively important in business and management.

With master’s in management programs, keep an eye out for accreditation from three organizations: the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the International Accreditation Council for Business Education, or the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

Consider Your Future Goals

An online master’s in management program is generally a good option for an early career business professional who aspires to managerial and supervisory roles in their field. Some people claim that a master’s in management is a more practical degree than an M.B.A. , focused more on minutiae and data such as budgeting and forecasting.

As such, many schools build their programs with working business professionals in mind. To that end, many online master’s in management programs do not include field experience or practicum experiences or internships. If you want your program to include this opportunity, you’ll have to research more carefully on the front end.

Since management is a general field, some online programs in the field offer more specific concentrations in areas such as nonprofit management, human resource management or supply chain management. If you know you want to enter one of these subfields, make sure to apply to a program with the right concentration option.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Per-credit tuition rates for the 10 ranked programs in our guide ranged from $347 to $775. Over the course of a typical 30- to 36-credit master’s in management program, these rates translate to approximately $10,000 to $28,000 in total tuition.

As of the 2021–2022 academic year, the National Center for Education Statistics found that the average college charged $20,513 in annual tuition. For a one- or two-year master’s program, this translates to roughly $20,000 to $40,000 in total tuition.

Make sure to fill out the FAFSA to finance your master’s program. The FAFSA can lead to loans, scholarships and grants. You can pursue similar opportunities through nonprofit organizations and schools. You can also seek out graduate assistantships through your school, but these opportunities are often reserved for on-campus students.

Is a master’s in management worth it?

It depends on your goals and circumstances. However, if you hope to advance to a managerial role in a business field, a master’s in management is often worth it, equipping you with qualifications and skills necessary to advance your career.

Is a master’s in management the same as an M.B.A.?

No, they are two separate degrees. Some would say that a master’s in management is a more practical degree, focused on budgeting and forecasting as opposed to big-picture thinking. A master’s in management is often built for early career business professionals, while an M.B.A. targets career changers and accelerators.

How long does a master’s in management take?

The programs in our guide generally take between 12 and 24 months to complete depending on how many courses you take per term.

Marketing Department | Ph.D. Program in Marketing

Ph.d. program in marketing.

Group photo of Stern Marketing PhD students

The Marketing Department at New York University's Stern School of Business offers a doctoral program that is widely recognized for the great success of its graduates. It has a large and distinguished faculty working in a diverse set of research areas from both behavioral and quantitative perspectives. Stern's Marketing Ph.D. program is extremely selective and, once accepted, students benefit from the faculty's dedication to ensuring a positive and productive doctoral experience. The department fosters a nurturing environment with close collaboration between doctoral students and faculty members. By the time students graduate, most have published in leading journals such as the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research or Marketing Science. For example, 25% of our faculty publications in the last three years have been with doctoral students, past and present. Although the primary focus of the program is the development of top researchers, Stern doctoral students also receive extensive training for teaching and begin their first academic appointments well prepared for the classroom. The fact that we have one of the top-rated Ph.D. programs in the country is also evidenced by our placements of our doctoral students as faculty at top business schools (e.g., Harvard, Berkeley, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Florida, Michigan). The tenure, publication, and teaching records of our doctoral students are outstanding. All of these activities give Stern Marketing an important role in mentoring the future leaders of our field.

Regularly scheduled instructional offerings include workshops, tours, orientations, and course-specific instruction in coordination with staff and faculty of the College.

Your Research Journey  is a five-part library workshop series to help guide you in your research throughout the semester, by providing you with manageable tools and resources to use along your journey. Whether this is your first time conducting research, or you are a well-seasoned researcher and looking for a refresher, each workshop introduces fundamental information to lay a foundation of knowledge on which you can build your scholarly work. While the workshops in this series are designed to build upon each other, you are welcome to attend any workshop individually. All are held on Wednesdays, 3-4pm.

Elevate Your Research  builds upon the foundational series, Y our Research Journey , by presenting valuable new topics, resources, and methodologies to make you an even stronger and highly proficient researcher. The Literature Review , Wednesday, 8/7, 3-4

The Literature Review is an essential element of scholarly inquiry, allowing researchers to understand the context and conclusions around a specific topic. A literature review can be conducted as a section in a main project such as a thesis or dissertation, or it can be a standalone project for a course or publication. For whatever reason you are embarking on your literature review process, this workshop will introduce you to the concepts and guidelines behind the three primary types of literature reviews; the narrative review, scoping review, and systematic review. We will also cover strategies for locating the sources you need for your literature review.

The Everett Cafe Music Program sponsors performances by TC student and affiliated musicians. Come enjoy a variety of genres and styles! Please  contact   us if you are interested in playing!

We welcome solos, duets, and trios -- and will resume a fuller program in the Fall of 2024.

Book Displays

Book displays  are curated and designed by library staff to share the joy of books and reading, while encouraging greater awareness of available resources  and their significance to the Library and College.

Everett Cafe:    Memorable Memoirs

While an autobiography covers a person's entire life, a memoir explores what is learned from specific life experiences. Recounting stories -- often coming of age -- from their lives, memoirists share feelings, opinions, knowledge, wisdom, life lessons -- usually creatively -- while still aiming to be reasonably accurate in their writing. They may have common experiences, revealing how they conform, or do not conform, to acceptable conventions or standards within their family, school, society, or world at large.

This summer we present an interesting and diverse range of electronic memoirs that offer a variety of perspectives relevant to education, psychology, and health in their widest contexts. Across countries, decades, genders, abilities, and beliefs, we hope to share inspiration from memoirs -- particularly literary -- as a memorable medium for expression, teaching, and understanding of our human values.

Memorable Memoirs   builds upon the Book Club hosted by the Teachers College Graduate Writing Center and Gottesman Libraries that began in Spring 2023 with a focus on the genre of memoir, mostly written by women. Stay tuned for Fall 2024 announcements of new readings added to the Book Club program.

Staff Picks:   Symptoms of Being Human

"What does it mean to be alive? What does it mean to have a body? How do we understand pain, suffering, and survivorship? And how is everything so beautiful still? How are we so beautiful still? How are we as fragile as we are and also as strong as we are? Here are some charming books that we believe share some beautiful insights on suffering and survivorship."

--Kungsang Palmo

Staff Picks is curated and designed each month by the Gottesman Libraries' staff to highlight resources on educational topics and themes of special interest.

Curiosity Cabinets:   Student Voices in Print and Perpetuity

Student Voices in Print and Perpetuity  showcases an extraordinary range of Teachers College student publications from the early 1900s to the present day, with examples of yearbooks, literary and art magazines, newsletters, bulletins, and books – all of which show the vital role that students play; they inform their peers and community about campus events and occurrences; raise political, economic, and socio-cultural concerns; and share their creative talents, often built upon the curriculum. They learn to think, create, and act upon their values, opinions, beliefs, and perspectives while becoming leaders for change. In representing both the individual and collective perspective and actions of students within the context of education, the student voice serves to awaken us to the complexities of ourselves, our societies, and our world, as their publications provide a tangible record.

News Displays

Need to keep current, look to the past, teach a topic? The Everett Cafe features daily postings of  news  from around the world, and also promotes awareness of historical events   from an educational context. Be sure to check the  Cafe News  postings on the library blog.

Summer Olympics Open in Berlin , Thursday, 8/1

Jean Piaget Is Born , Friday, 8/9

Remembering Margaret Mitchell , Friday, 8/16

Every month we draw attention to select databases that strengthen learning, teaching, and research in academic areas and their relevance to current offerings and programs.

In August we highlight research resources that support the field of Developmental Psychology, the study of human growth and development over the lifespan - how humans adapt and change, including their physical, cognitive, social, intellectual, perceptual, personality, and emotional aspects of well-being, from the pre-natal period through to older adult development.  Read more on the library's news feed.

Educational exhibitions are mounted in partnership with the Teachers College community and others with an interest in displaying unique and innovative educational materials, while also regularly showcasing Teachers College's Historical Art Collections.

The library has several spaces in Russell Hall to exhibit diverse materials, and also features digital and web-based exhibitions when possible.

Growth: Part One: Select Artworks from the Ziegfeld Collection of International Children's Art

The   Ziegfeld Collection of International Children's Art   is comprised of 361 paintings, drawings, prints, and collages made by adolescents aged 10 to 18 from 32 countries across the world. The Collection was first shown in 1967 at the High Museum in The Hague, the Netherlands. It was assembled by Professor Edwin Ziegfeld, then Chair of Art and Education at Teachers College. Columbia University, who was also President of the International Society for Art Education, an organization he helped found in 1954 under the auspices of the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

Under the direction of Macy Professor of Education   Judith Burton   and in collaboration with the Library, the Ziegfeld Collection was first shown at the Macy Art Gallery, Teachers College in 1999. Wrote Professor Emerita Maxine Greene, "this exhibition opene[d] new possibilities for those dedicated to the growth of children and, particularly, to enabling the adolescents of our time to find their way through the entangled forests of a difficult moment in history."(Catalog Introduction,   The Ziegfeld Collection: International Artworks of Adolescents from the 1950s: A Celebration ). Created after the Second World War, the artworks spoke to the significance of adolescents who would continue the adult work of reshaping the world, its values, aspirations, skills, and behaviors, over the coming decades.

Growth, Part One: Select Works from the Ziegfeld Collection of International Children's Art   focuses on representations of the family, school, and friendships -- a foundation for growth of the individual. These topics are also reflected in the Everett Cafe book display,   Memorable Memoirs , international in scope but more adult in perspective. We invite viewers and readers to consider their formative years, from the nucleus of the family and schooling, to social growth -- and to explore common human experiences and emotions as they relate to our understanding of ourselves; the world around us; and our development as human beings.

Growth: Select Works from the Ziegfeld Collection of International Children's Art   will be displayed in three parts over the Summer and Fall of 2024.

19 Facts About Tim Walz, Harris’s Pick for Vice President

Mr. Walz, the governor of Minnesota, worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach, served in the Army National Guard and chooses Diet Mountain Dew over alcohol.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, in a gray T-shirt and baseball cap, speaks at a Kamala Harris event in St. Paul, Minn., last month.

By Simon J. Levien and Maggie Astor

  • Published Aug. 6, 2024 Updated Aug. 8, 2024

Follow live updates on the 2024 election .

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.

Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.

1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.

4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics.

5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University.
