The field of artificial intelligence has made remarkable progress in the past five years and is having real-world impact on people, institutions and culture. The ability of computer programs to perform sophisticated language- and image-processing tasks, core problems that have driven the field since its birth in the 1950s, has advanced significantly. Although the current state of AI technology is still far short of the field’s founding aspiration of recreating full human-like intelligence in machines, research and development teams are leveraging these advances and incorporating them into society-facing applications. For example, the use of AI techniques in healthcare is becoming a reality, and the brain sciences are both a beneficiary of and a contributor to AI advances. Old and new companies are investing money and attention to varying degrees to find ways to build on this progress and provide services that scale in unprecedented ways.

The field’s successes have led to an inflection point: It is now urgent to think seriously about the downsides and risks that the broad application of AI is revealing. The increasing capacity to automate decisions at scale is a double-edged sword; intentional deepfakes or simply unaccountable algorithms making mission-critical recommendations can result in people being misled, discriminated against, and even physically harmed. Algorithms trained on historical data are disposed to reinforce and even exacerbate existing biases and inequalities. Whereas AI research has traditionally been the purview of computer scientists and researchers studying cognitive processes, it has become clear that all areas of human inquiry, especially the social sciences, need to be included in a broader conversation about the future of the field. Minimizing the negative impacts on society and enhancing the positive requires more than one-shot technological solutions; keeping AI on track for positive outcomes relevant to society requires ongoing engagement and continual attention.

Looking ahead, a number of important steps need to be taken. Governments play a critical role in shaping the development and application of AI, and they have been rapidly adjusting to acknowledge the importance of the technology to science, economics, and the process of governing itself. But government institutions are still behind the curve, and sustained investment of time and resources will be needed to meet the challenges posed by rapidly evolving technology. In addition to regulating the most influential aspects of AI applications on society, governments need to look ahead to ensure the creation of informed communities. Incorporating understanding of AI concepts and implications into K-12 education is an example of a needed step to help prepare the next generation to live in and contribute to an equitable AI-infused world.

The AI research community itself has a critical role to play in this regard, learning how to share important trends and findings with the public in informative and actionable ways, free of hype and clear about the dangers and unintended consequences along with the opportunities and benefits. AI researchers should also recognize that complete autonomy is not the eventual goal for AI systems. Our strength as a species comes from our ability to work together and accomplish more than any of us could alone. AI needs to be incorporated into that community-wide system, with clear lines of communication between human and automated decision-makers. At the end of the day, the success of the field will be measured by how it has empowered all people, not by how efficiently machines devalue the very people we are trying to help.

The impact of artificial intelligence on human society and bioethics

Artificial intelligence (AI), known by some as the industrial revolution (IR) 4.0, is going to change not only the way we do things, how we relate to others, but also what we know about ourselves. This article will first examine what AI is, discuss its impact on industrial, social, and economic changes on humankind in the 21 st century, and then propose a set of principles for AI bioethics. The IR1.0, the IR of the 18 th century, impelled a huge social change without directly complicating human relationships. Modern AI, however, has a tremendous impact on how we do things and also the ways we relate to one another. Facing this challenge, new principles of AI bioethics must be considered and developed to provide guidelines for the AI technology to observe so that the world will be benefited by the progress of this new intelligence.

W HAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has many different definitions; some see it as the created technology that allows computers and machines to function intelligently. Some see it as the machine that replaces human labor to work for men a more effective and speedier result. Others see it as “a system” with the ability to correctly interpret external data, to learn from such data, and to use those learnings to achieve specific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation [ 1 ].

Despite the different definitions, the common understanding of AI is that it is associated with machines and computers to help humankind solve problems and facilitate working processes. In short, it is an intelligence designed by humans and demonstrated by machines. The term AI is used to describe these functions of human-made tool that emulates the “cognitive” abilities of the natural intelligence of human minds [ 2 ].

Along with the rapid development of cybernetic technology in recent years, AI has been seen almost in all our life circles, and some of that may no longer be regarded as AI because it is so common in daily life that we are much used to it such as optical character recognition or the Siri (speech interpretation and recognition interface) of information searching equipment on computer [ 3 ].

D IFFERENT TYPES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

From the functions and abilities provided by AI, we can distinguish two different types. The first is weak AI, also known as narrow AI that is designed to perform a narrow task, such as facial recognition or Internet Siri search or self-driving car. Many currently existing systems that claim to use “AI” are likely operating as a weak AI focusing on a narrowly defined specific function. Although this weak AI seems to be helpful to human living, there are still some think weak AI could be dangerous because weak AI could cause disruptions in the electric grid or may damage nuclear power plants when malfunctioned.

The new development of the long-term goal of many researchers is to create strong AI or artificial general intelligence (AGI) which is the speculative intelligence of a machine that has the capacity to understand or learn any intelligent task human being can, thus assisting human to unravel the confronted problem. While narrow AI may outperform humans such as playing chess or solving equations, but its effect is still weak. AGI, however, could outperform humans at nearly every cognitive task.

Strong AI is a different perception of AI that it can be programmed to actually be a human mind, to be intelligent in whatever it is commanded to attempt, even to have perception, beliefs and other cognitive capacities that are normally only ascribed to humans [ 4 ].

In summary, we can see these different functions of AI [ 5 , 6 ]:

  • Automation: What makes a system or process to function automatically
  • Machine learning and vision: The science of getting a computer to act through deep learning to predict and analyze, and to see through a camera, analog-to-digital conversion and digital signal processing
  • Natural language processing: The processing of human language by a computer program, such as spam detection and converting instantly a language to another to help humans communicate
  • Robotics: A field of engineering focusing on the design and manufacturing of cyborgs, the so-called machine man. They are used to perform tasks for human's convenience or something too difficult or dangerous for human to perform and can operate without stopping such as in assembly lines
  • Self-driving car: Use a combination of computer vision, image recognition amid deep learning to build automated control in a vehicle.

D O HUMAN-BEINGS REALLY NEED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ?

Is AI really needed in human society? It depends. If human opts for a faster and effective way to complete their work and to work constantly without taking a break, yes, it is. However if humankind is satisfied with a natural way of living without excessive desires to conquer the order of nature, it is not. History tells us that human is always looking for something faster, easier, more effective, and convenient to finish the task they work on; therefore, the pressure for further development motivates humankind to look for a new and better way of doing things. Humankind as the homo-sapiens discovered that tools could facilitate many hardships for daily livings and through tools they invented, human could complete the work better, faster, smarter and more effectively. The invention to create new things becomes the incentive of human progress. We enjoy a much easier and more leisurely life today all because of the contribution of technology. The human society has been using the tools since the beginning of civilization, and human progress depends on it. The human kind living in the 21 st century did not have to work as hard as their forefathers in previous times because they have new machines to work for them. It is all good and should be all right for these AI but a warning came in early 20 th century as the human-technology kept developing that Aldous Huxley warned in his book Brave New World that human might step into a world in which we are creating a monster or a super human with the development of genetic technology.

Besides, up-to-dated AI is breaking into healthcare industry too by assisting doctors to diagnose, finding the sources of diseases, suggesting various ways of treatment performing surgery and also predicting if the illness is life-threatening [ 7 ]. A recent study by surgeons at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington successfully demonstrated surgery with an autonomous robot. The team supervised the robot to perform soft-tissue surgery, stitch together a pig's bowel, and the robot finished the job better than a human surgeon, the team claimed [ 8 , 9 ]. It demonstrates robotically-assisted surgery can overcome the limitations of pre-existing minimally-invasive surgical procedures and to enhance the capacities of surgeons performing open surgery.

Above all, we see the high-profile examples of AI including autonomous vehicles (such as drones and self-driving cars), medical diagnosis, creating art, playing games (such as Chess or Go), search engines (such as Google search), online assistants (such as Siri), image recognition in photographs, spam filtering, predicting flight delays…etc. All these have made human life much easier and convenient that we are so used to them and take them for granted. AI has become indispensable, although it is not absolutely needed without it our world will be in chaos in many ways today.

T HE IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON HUMAN SOCIETY

Negative impact.

Questions have been asked: With the progressive development of AI, human labor will no longer be needed as everything can be done mechanically. Will humans become lazier and eventually degrade to the stage that we return to our primitive form of being? The process of evolution takes eons to develop, so we will not notice the backsliding of humankind. However how about if the AI becomes so powerful that it can program itself to be in charge and disobey the order given by its master, the humankind?

Let us see the negative impact the AI will have on human society [ 10 , 11 ]:

  • A huge social change that disrupts the way we live in the human community will occur. Humankind has to be industrious to make their living, but with the service of AI, we can just program the machine to do a thing for us without even lifting a tool. Human closeness will be gradually diminishing as AI will replace the need for people to meet face to face for idea exchange. AI will stand in between people as the personal gathering will no longer be needed for communication
  • Unemployment is the next because many works will be replaced by machinery. Today, many automobile assembly lines have been filled with machineries and robots, forcing traditional workers to lose their jobs. Even in supermarket, the store clerks will not be needed anymore as the digital device can take over human labor
  • Wealth inequality will be created as the investors of AI will take up the major share of the earnings. The gap between the rich and the poor will be widened. The so-called “M” shape wealth distribution will be more obvious
  • New issues surface not only in a social sense but also in AI itself as the AI being trained and learned how to operate the given task can eventually take off to the stage that human has no control, thus creating un-anticipated problems and consequences. It refers to AI's capacity after being loaded with all needed algorithm may automatically function on its own course ignoring the command given by the human controller
  • The human masters who create AI may invent something that is racial bias or egocentrically oriented to harm certain people or things. For instance, the United Nations has voted to limit the spread of nucleus power in fear of its indiscriminative use to destroying humankind or targeting on certain races or region to achieve the goal of domination. AI is possible to target certain race or some programmed objects to accomplish the command of destruction by the programmers, thus creating world disaster.

P OSITIVE IMPACT

There are, however, many positive impacts on humans as well, especially in the field of healthcare. AI gives computers the capacity to learn, reason, and apply logic. Scientists, medical researchers, clinicians, mathematicians, and engineers, when working together, can design an AI that is aimed at medical diagnosis and treatments, thus offering reliable and safe systems of health-care delivery. As health professors and medical researchers endeavor to find new and efficient ways of treating diseases, not only the digital computer can assist in analyzing, robotic systems can also be created to do some delicate medical procedures with precision. Here, we see the contribution of AI to health care [ 7 , 11 ]:

Fast and accurate diagnostics

IBM's Watson computer has been used to diagnose with the fascinating result. Loading the data to the computer will instantly get AI's diagnosis. AI can also provide various ways of treatment for physicians to consider. The procedure is something like this: To load the digital results of physical examination to the computer that will consider all possibilities and automatically diagnose whether or not the patient suffers from some deficiencies and illness and even suggest various kinds of available treatment.

Socially therapeutic robots

Pets are recommended to senior citizens to ease their tension and reduce blood pressure, anxiety, loneliness, and increase social interaction. Now cyborgs have been suggested to accompany those lonely old folks, even to help do some house chores. Therapeutic robots and the socially assistive robot technology help improve the quality of life for seniors and physically challenged [ 12 ].

Reduce errors related to human fatigue

Human error at workforce is inevitable and often costly, the greater the level of fatigue, the higher the risk of errors occurring. Al technology, however, does not suffer from fatigue or emotional distraction. It saves errors and can accomplish the duty faster and more accurately.

Artificial intelligence-based surgical contribution

AI-based surgical procedures have been available for people to choose. Although this AI still needs to be operated by the health professionals, it can complete the work with less damage to the body. The da Vinci surgical system, a robotic technology allowing surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures, is available in most of the hospitals now. These systems enable a degree of precision and accuracy far greater than the procedures done manually. The less invasive the surgery, the less trauma it will occur and less blood loss, less anxiety of the patients.

Improved radiology

The first computed tomography scanners were introduced in 1971. The first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the human body took place in 1977. By the early 2000s, cardiac MRI, body MRI, and fetal imaging, became routine. The search continues for new algorithms to detect specific diseases as well as to analyze the results of scans [ 9 ]. All those are the contribution of the technology of AI.

Virtual presence

The virtual presence technology can enable a distant diagnosis of the diseases. The patient does not have to leave his/her bed but using a remote presence robot, doctors can check the patients without actually being there. Health professionals can move around and interact almost as effectively as if they were present. This allows specialists to assist patients who are unable to travel.

S OME CAUTIONS TO BE REMINDED

Despite all the positive promises that AI provides, human experts, however, are still essential and necessary to design, program, and operate the AI from any unpredictable error from occurring. Beth Kindig, a San Francisco-based technology analyst with more than a decade of experience in analyzing private and public technology companies, published a free newsletter indicating that although AI has a potential promise for better medical diagnosis, human experts are still needed to avoid the misclassification of unknown diseases because AI is not omnipotent to solve all problems for human kinds. There are times when AI meets an impasse, and to carry on its mission, it may just proceed indiscriminately, ending in creating more problems. Thus vigilant watch of AI's function cannot be neglected. This reminder is known as physician-in-the-loop [ 13 ].

The question of an ethical AI consequently was brought up by Elizabeth Gibney in her article published in Nature to caution any bias and possible societal harm [ 14 ]. The Neural Information processing Systems (NeurIPS) conference in Vancouver Canada in 2020 brought up the ethical controversies of the application of AI technology, such as in predictive policing or facial recognition, that due to bias algorithms can result in hurting the vulnerable population [ 14 ]. For instance, the NeurIPS can be programmed to target certain race or decree as the probable suspect of crime or trouble makers.

T HE CHALLENGE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO BIOETHICS

Artificial intelligence ethics must be developed.

Bioethics is a discipline that focuses on the relationship among living beings. Bioethics accentuates the good and the right in biospheres and can be categorized into at least three areas, the bioethics in health settings that is the relationship between physicians and patients, the bioethics in social settings that is the relationship among humankind and the bioethics in environmental settings that is the relationship between man and nature including animal ethics, land ethics, ecological ethics…etc. All these are concerned about relationships within and among natural existences.

As AI arises, human has a new challenge in terms of establishing a relationship toward something that is not natural in its own right. Bioethics normally discusses the relationship within natural existences, either humankind or his environment, that are parts of natural phenomena. But now men have to deal with something that is human-made, artificial and unnatural, namely AI. Human has created many things yet never has human had to think of how to ethically relate to his own creation. AI by itself is without feeling or personality. AI engineers have realized the importance of giving the AI ability to discern so that it will avoid any deviated activities causing unintended harm. From this perspective, we understand that AI can have a negative impact on humans and society; thus, a bioethics of AI becomes important to make sure that AI will not take off on its own by deviating from its originally designated purpose.

Stephen Hawking warned early in 2014 that the development of full AI could spell the end of the human race. He said that once humans develop AI, it may take off on its own and redesign itself at an ever-increasing rate [ 15 ]. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, could not compete and would be superseded. In his book Superintelligence, Nick Bostrom gives an argument that AI will pose a threat to humankind. He argues that sufficiently intelligent AI can exhibit convergent behavior such as acquiring resources or protecting itself from being shut down, and it might harm humanity [ 16 ].

The question is–do we have to think of bioethics for the human's own created product that bears no bio-vitality? Can a machine have a mind, consciousness, and mental state in exactly the same sense that human beings do? Can a machine be sentient and thus deserve certain rights? Can a machine intentionally cause harm? Regulations must be contemplated as a bioethical mandate for AI production.

Studies have shown that AI can reflect the very prejudices humans have tried to overcome. As AI becomes “truly ubiquitous,” it has a tremendous potential to positively impact all manner of life, from industry to employment to health care and even security. Addressing the risks associated with the technology, Janosch Delcker, Politico Europe's AI correspondent, said: “I don't think AI will ever be free of bias, at least not as long as we stick to machine learning as we know it today,”…. “What's crucially important, I believe, is to recognize that those biases exist and that policymakers try to mitigate them” [ 17 ]. The High-Level Expert Group on AI of the European Union presented Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI in 2019 that suggested AI systems must be accountable, explainable, and unbiased. Three emphases are given:

  • Lawful-respecting all applicable laws and regulations
  • Ethical-respecting ethical principles and values
  • Robust-being adaptive, reliable, fair, and trustworthy from a technical perspective while taking into account its social environment [ 18 ].

Seven requirements are recommended [ 18 ]:

  • AI should not trample on human autonomy. People should not be manipulated or coerced by AI systems, and humans should be able to intervene or oversee every decision that the software makes
  • AI should be secure and accurate. It should not be easily compromised by external attacks, and it should be reasonably reliable
  • Personal data collected by AI systems should be secure and private. It should not be accessible to just anyone, and it should not be easily stolen
  • Data and algorithms used to create an AI system should be accessible, and the decisions made by the software should be “understood and traced by human beings.” In other words, operators should be able to explain the decisions their AI systems make
  • Services provided by AI should be available to all, regardless of age, gender, race, or other characteristics. Similarly, systems should not be biased along these lines
  • AI systems should be sustainable (i.e., they should be ecologically responsible) and “enhance positive social change”
  • AI systems should be auditable and covered by existing protections for corporate whistleblowers. The negative impacts of systems should be acknowledged and reported in advance.

From these guidelines, we can suggest that future AI must be equipped with human sensibility or “AI humanities.” To accomplish this, AI researchers, manufacturers, and all industries must bear in mind that technology is to serve not to manipulate humans and his society. Bostrom and Judkowsky listed responsibility, transparency, auditability, incorruptibility, and predictability [ 19 ] as criteria for the computerized society to think about.

S UGGESTED PRINCIPLES FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BIOETHICS

Nathan Strout, a reporter at Space and Intelligence System at Easter University, USA, reported just recently that the intelligence community is developing its own AI ethics. The Pentagon made announced in February 2020 that it is in the process of adopting principles for using AI as the guidelines for the department to follow while developing new AI tools and AI-enabled technologies. Ben Huebner, chief of the Office of Director of National Intelligence's Civil Liberties, Privacy, and Transparency Office, said that “We're going to need to ensure that we have transparency and accountability in these structures as we use them. They have to be secure and resilient” [ 20 ]. Two themes have been suggested for the AI community to think more about: Explainability and interpretability. Explainability is the concept of understanding how the analytic works, while interpretability is being able to understand a particular result produced by an analytic [ 20 ].

All the principles suggested by scholars for AI bioethics are well-brought-up. I gather from different bioethical principles in all the related fields of bioethics to suggest four principles here for consideration to guide the future development of the AI technology. We however must bear in mind that the main attention should still be placed on human because AI after all has been designed and manufactured by human. AI proceeds to its work according to its algorithm. AI itself cannot empathize nor have the ability to discern good from evil and may commit mistakes in processes. All the ethical quality of AI depends on the human designers; therefore, it is an AI bioethics and at the same time, a trans-bioethics that abridge human and material worlds. Here are the principles:

  • Beneficence: Beneficence means doing good, and here it refers to the purpose and functions of AI should benefit the whole human life, society and universe. Any AI that will perform any destructive work on bio-universe, including all life forms, must be avoided and forbidden. The AI scientists must understand that reason of developing this technology has no other purpose but to benefit human society as a whole not for any individual personal gain. It should be altruistic, not egocentric in nature
  • Value-upholding: This refers to AI's congruence to social values, in other words, universal values that govern the order of the natural world must be observed. AI cannot elevate to the height above social and moral norms and must be bias-free. The scientific and technological developments must be for the enhancement of human well-being that is the chief value AI must hold dearly as it progresses further
  • Lucidity: AI must be transparent without hiding any secret agenda. It has to be easily comprehensible, detectable, incorruptible, and perceivable. AI technology should be made available for public auditing, testing and review, and subject to accountability standards … In high-stakes settings like diagnosing cancer from radiologic images, an algorithm that can't “explain its work” may pose an unacceptable risk. Thus, explainability and interpretability are absolutely required
  • Accountability: AI designers and developers must bear in mind they carry a heavy responsibility on their shoulders of the outcome and impact of AI on whole human society and the universe. They must be accountable for whatever they manufacture and create.

C ONCLUSION

AI is here to stay in our world and we must try to enforce the AI bioethics of beneficence, value upholding, lucidity and accountability. Since AI is without a soul as it is, its bioethics must be transcendental to bridge the shortcoming of AI's inability to empathize. AI is a reality of the world. We must take note of what Joseph Weizenbaum, a pioneer of AI, said that we must not let computers make important decisions for us because AI as a machine will never possess human qualities such as compassion and wisdom to morally discern and judge [ 10 ]. Bioethics is not a matter of calculation but a process of conscientization. Although AI designers can up-load all information, data, and programmed to AI to function as a human being, it is still a machine and a tool. AI will always remain as AI without having authentic human feelings and the capacity to commiserate. Therefore, AI technology must be progressed with extreme caution. As Von der Leyen said in White Paper on AI – A European approach to excellence and trust : “AI must serve people, and therefore, AI must always comply with people's rights…. High-risk AI. That potentially interferes with people's rights has to be tested and certified before it reaches our single market” [ 21 ].

Artificial Intelligence vs. Human Intelligence – Exploring the Debate and Key Points

The discussion on whether artificial intelligence can replace human intelligence has been a topic of intense debate. While some argue that AI has the potential to become a formidable replacement for human intelligence, others question whether it is even possible. This ongoing debate raises important arguments on both sides, each presenting compelling points to support their stance.

On one hand, proponents of AI as a replacement for human intelligence point to the impressive advancements in technology and its ability to perform tasks that were once exclusive to humans. They argue that AI systems can analyze vast amounts of data, make complex decisions, and even learn from their experiences. This proliferation of AI capabilities suggests that it is possible for artificial intelligence to surpass human intelligence in specific domains.

On the other hand, skeptics question the true potential of AI to fully replace human intelligence. They highlight the unique qualities of human cognition, such as creativity, emotion, and moral reasoning, which AI systems currently struggle to replicate. While AI may excel in specific tasks, the argument is made that it lacks the nuanced understanding and intuition that humans possess. Additionally, concerns about the ethical implications of AI replacing human intelligence play a significant role in this debate.

Ultimately, the discussion on whether artificial intelligence can replace human intelligence is ongoing and multifaceted. The potential for AI to surpass human capabilities in certain domains is evident, but the arguments against its full replacement highlight the unique qualities of human cognition that are difficult to replicate. As technology continues to advance, it is important to consider the ethical and societal implications of AI’s role in our future.

Advancements in artificial intelligence technology

How has artificial intelligence changed and shaped our world over the last five years? How will AI continue to impact our lives in the coming years? Those were the questions addressed in the most recent report from the One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100), an ongoing project hosted at Stanford University, that will study the status of AI technology and its impacts on the world over the next 100 years.

The 2021 report is the second in a series that will be released every five years until 2116. Titled “Gathering Strength, Gathering Storms,” the report explores the various ways AI is  increasingly touching people’s lives in settings that range from  movie recommendations  and  voice assistants  to  autonomous driving  and  automated medical diagnoses .

Barbara Grosz , the Higgins Research Professor of Natural Sciences at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) is a member of the standing committee overseeing the AI100 project and Finale Doshi-Velez , Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science, is part of the panel of interdisciplinary researchers who wrote this year’s report. 

We spoke with Doshi-Velez about the report, what it says about the role AI is currently playing in our lives, and how it will change in the future.  

Q: Let's start with a snapshot: What is the current state of AI and its potential?

Doshi-Velez: Some of the biggest changes in the last five years have been how well AIs now perform in large data regimes on specific types of tasks.  We've seen [DeepMind’s] AlphaZero become the best Go player entirely through self-play, and everyday uses of AI such as grammar checks and autocomplete, automatic personal photo organization and search, and speech recognition become commonplace for large numbers of people.  

In terms of potential, I'm most excited about AIs that might augment and assist people.  They can be used to drive insights in drug discovery, help with decision making such as identifying a menu of likely treatment options for patients, and provide basic assistance, such as lane keeping while driving or text-to-speech based on images from a phone for the visually impaired.  In many situations, people and AIs have complementary strengths. I think we're getting closer to unlocking the potential of people and AI teams.

There's a much greater recognition that we should not be waiting for AI tools to become mainstream before making sure they are ethical.

Q: Over the course of 100 years, these reports will tell the story of AI and its evolving role in society. Even though there have only been two reports, what's the story so far?

There's actually a lot of change even in five years.  The first report is fairly rosy.  For example, it mentions how algorithmic risk assessments may mitigate the human biases of judges.  The second has a much more mixed view.  I think this comes from the fact that as AI tools have come into the mainstream — both in higher stakes and everyday settings — we are appropriately much less willing to tolerate flaws, especially discriminatory ones. There's also been questions of information and disinformation control as people get their news, social media, and entertainment via searches and rankings personalized to them. So, there's a much greater recognition that we should not be waiting for AI tools to become mainstream before making sure they are ethical.

Q: What is the responsibility of institutes of higher education in preparing students and the next generation of computer scientists for the future of AI and its impact on society?

First, I'll say that the need to understand the basics of AI and data science starts much earlier than higher education!  Children are being exposed to AIs as soon as they click on videos on YouTube or browse photo albums. They need to understand aspects of AI such as how their actions affect future recommendations.

But for computer science students in college, I think a key thing that future engineers need to realize is when to demand input and how to talk across disciplinary boundaries to get at often difficult-to-quantify notions of safety, equity, fairness, etc.  I'm really excited that Harvard has the Embedded EthiCS program to provide some of this education.  Of course, this is an addition to standard good engineering practices like building robust models, validating them, and so forth, which is all a bit harder with AI.

I think a key thing that future engineers need to realize is when to demand input and how to talk across disciplinary boundaries to get at often difficult-to-quantify notions of safety, equity, fairness, etc. 

Q: Your work focuses on machine learning with applications to healthcare, which is also an area of focus of this report. What is the state of AI in healthcare? 

A lot of AI in healthcare has been on the business end, used for optimizing billing, scheduling surgeries, that sort of thing.  When it comes to AI for better patient care, which is what we usually think about, there are few legal, regulatory, and financial incentives to do so, and many disincentives. Still, there's been slow but steady integration of AI-based tools, often in the form of risk scoring and alert systems.

In the near future, two applications that I'm really excited about are triage in low-resource settings — having AIs do initial reads of pathology slides, for example, if there are not enough pathologists, or get an initial check of whether a mole looks suspicious — and ways in which AIs can help identify promising treatment options for discussion with a clinician team and patient.

Q: Any predictions for the next report?

I'll be keen to see where currently nascent AI regulation initiatives have gotten to. Accountability is such a difficult question in AI,  it's tricky to nurture both innovation and basic protections.  Perhaps the most important innovation will be in approaches for AI accountability.

It is as hard to understand a technological revolution while it is happening as to know what a hurricane will do while the winds are still gaining speed. Through the emergence of technologies now regarded as basic elements of modernity — electric power, the arrival of automobiles and airplanes and now the internet — people have tried, with hit-and-miss success, to assess their future impact.

The most persistent and touching error has been the ever-dashed hope that, as machines are able to do more work, human beings will be freed to do less, and will have more time for culture and contemplation. The greatest imaginative challenge seems to be foreseeing which changes will arrive sooner than expected (computers outplaying chess grandmasters), and which will be surprisingly slow (flying cars). The tech-world saying is that people chronically overestimate what technology can do in a year, and underestimate what it can do in a decade and beyond.

So it inevitably goes with one of this moment’s revolutions, the combination of ever-higher computing speed and vastly more-voluminous data that together are the foundations of artificial intelligence, or A.I. Depending on how you count, the A.I. revolution began about 60 years ago, dating to the dawn of the computer age and a concept called the “Perceptron” — or has just barely begun. Its implications range from utilities already routinized into daily life (like real-time updates on traffic flow), to ominous steps toward “1984”-style perpetual-surveillance states (like China’s facial recognition system, which within one second can match a name to a photo of any person within the country).

Looking back, it’s easy to recognize the damage done by waiting too long to face important choices about technology — or leaving those choices to whatever a private interest might find profitable. These go from the role of the automobile in creating America’s sprawl-suburb landscape to the role of Facebook and other companies in fostering the disinformation society.

“Genius Makers” and “Futureproof,” both by experienced technology reporters now at The New York Times, are part of a rapidly growing literature attempting to make sense of the A.I. hurricane we are living through. These are very different kinds of books — Cade Metz’s is mainly reportorial, about how we got here; Kevin Roose’s is a casual-toned but carefully constructed set of guidelines about where individuals and societies should go next. But each valuably suggests a framework for the right questions to ask now about A.I. and its use.

The future of AI’s impact on society

As artificial intelligence continues its rapid evolution, what influence do humans have?

The past decade, and particularly the past few years, has been transformative for artificial intelligence, not so much in terms of what we can do with this technology as what we are doing with it. Some place the advent of this era to 2007, with the introduction of smartphones. At its most essential, intelligence is just intelligence, whether artifact or animal. It is a form of computation, and as such, a transformation of information. The cornucopia of deeply personal information that resulted from the willful tethering of a huge portion of society to the internet has allowed us to pass immense explicit and implicit knowledge from human culture via human brains into digital form. Here we can not only use it to operate with human-like competence but also produce further knowledge and behavior by means of machine-based computation.

For decades—even prior to the inception of the term—AI has aroused both fear and excitement as humanity contemplates creating machines in our image. This expectation that intelligent artifacts should by necessity be human-like artifacts blinded most of us to the important fact that we have been achieving AI for some time. While the breakthroughs in surpassing human ability at human pursuits, such as chess, make headlines, AI has been a standard part of the industrial repertoire since at least the 1980s. Then production-rule or “expert” systems became a standard technology for checking circuit boards and detecting credit card fraud. Similarly, machine-learning (ML) strategies like genetic algorithms have long been used for intractable computational problems, such as scheduling, and neural networks not only to model and understand human learning, but also for basic industrial control and monitoring.

The future of AI's impact on society

In the 1990s, probabilistic and Bayesian methods revolutionized ML and opened the door to some of the most pervasive AI technologies now available: searching through massive troves of data. This search capacity included the ability to do semantic analysis of raw text, astonishingly enabling web users to find the documents they seek out of trillions of webpages just by typing only a few words.

AI is core to some of the most successful companies in history in terms of market capitalization—Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon. Along with information and communication technology (ICT) more generally, AI has revolutionized the ease with which people from all over the world can access knowledge, credit, and other benefits of contemporary global society. Such access has helped lead to massive reduction of global inequality and extreme poverty, for example by allowing farmers to know fair prices, the best crops, and giving them access to accurate weather predictions.

For decades, AI has aroused both fear and excitement as humanity contemplates creating machines in our image.

Having said this, academics, technologists, and the general public have raised a number of concerns that may indicate a need for down-regulation or constraint. As Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft recently asserted, “Information technology raises issues that go to the heart of fundamental human-rights protections like privacy and freedom of expression. These issues heighten responsibility for tech companies that create these products. In our view, they also call for thoughtful government regulation and for the development of norms around acceptable uses.”

Artificial intelligence is already changing society at a faster pace than we realize, but at the same time it is not as novel or unique in human experience as we are often led to imagine. Other artifactual entities, such as language and writing, corporations and governments, telecommunications and oil, have previously extended our capacities, altered our economies, and disrupted our social order—generally though not universally for the better. The evidence assumption that we are on average better off for our progress is ironically perhaps the greatest hurdle we currently need to overcome: sustainable living and reversing the collapse of biodiversity.

AI and ICT more generally may well require radical innovations in the way we govern, and particularly in the way we raise revenue for redistribution. We are faced with transnational wealth transfers through business innovations that have outstripped our capacity to measure or even identify the level of income generated. Further, this new currency of unknowable value is often personal data, and personal data gives those who hold it the immense power of prediction over the individuals it references.

But beyond the economic and governance challenges, we need to remember that AI first and foremost extends and enhances what it means to be human, and in particular our problem-solving capacities. Given ongoing global challenges such as security, sustainability, and reversing the collapse of biodiversity, such enhancements promise to continue to be of significant benefit, assuming we can establish good mechanisms for their regulation. Through a sensible portfolio of regulatory policies and agencies, we should continue to expand—and also to limit, as appropriate—the scope of potential AI applications.

ChatGPT and similar generative AI models have attracted hundreds of millions of users and have become part of the public discourse. Many believe that such models will disrupt society and lead to significant changes in the education system and information generation. So far, this belief is based on either colloquial evidence or benchmarks from the owners of the models—both lack scientific rigor. We systematically assess the quality of AI-generated content through a large-scale study comparing human-written versus ChatGPT-generated argumentative student essays. We use essays that were rated by a large number of human experts (teachers). We augment the analysis by considering a set of linguistic characteristics of the generated essays. Our results demonstrate that ChatGPT generates essays that are rated higher regarding quality than human-written essays. The writing style of the AI models exhibits linguistic characteristics that are different from those of the human-written essays. Since the technology is readily available, we believe that educators must act immediately. We must re-invent homework and develop teaching concepts that utilize these AI models in the same way as math utilizes the calculator: teach the general concepts first and then use AI tools to free up time for other learning objectives.

Introduction.

The massive uptake in the development and deployment of large-scale Natural Language Generation (NLG) systems in recent months has yielded an almost unprecedented worldwide discussion of the future of society. The ChatGPT service which serves as Web front-end to GPT-3.5 1 and GPT-4 was the fastest-growing service in history to break the 100 million user milestone in January and had 1 billion visits by February 2023 2 .

Driven by the upheaval that is particularly anticipated for education 3 and knowledge transfer for future generations, we conduct the first independent, systematic study of AI-generated language content that is typically dealt with in high-school education: argumentative essays, i.e. essays in which students discuss a position on a controversial topic by collecting and reflecting on evidence (e.g. ‘Should students be taught to cooperate or compete?’). Learning to write such essays is a crucial aspect of education, as students learn to systematically assess and reflect on a problem from different perspectives. Understanding the capability of generative AI to perform this task increases our understanding of the skills of the models, as well as of the challenges educators face when it comes to teaching this crucial skill. While there is a multitude of individual examples and anecdotal evidence for the quality of AI-generated content in this genre (e.g. 4 ) this paper is the first to systematically assess the quality of human-written and AI-generated argumentative texts across different versions of ChatGPT 5 . We use a fine-grained essay quality scoring rubric based on content and language mastery and employ a significant pool of domain experts, i.e. high school teachers across disciplines, to perform the evaluation. Using computational linguistic methods and rigorous statistical analysis, we arrive at several key findings:

AI models generate significantly higher-quality argumentative essays than the users of an essay-writing online forum frequented by German high-school students across all criteria in our scoring rubric.

ChatGPT-4 (ChatGPT web interface with the GPT-4 model) significantly outperforms ChatGPT-3 (ChatGPT web interface with the GPT-3.5 default model) with respect to logical structure, language complexity, vocabulary richness and text linking.

Writing styles between humans and generative AI models differ significantly: for instance, the GPT models use more nominalizations and have higher sentence complexity (signaling more complex, ‘scientific’, language), whereas the students make more use of modal and epistemic constructions (which tend to convey speaker attitude).

The linguistic diversity of the NLG models seems to be improving over time: while ChatGPT-3 still has a significantly lower linguistic diversity than humans, ChatGPT-4 has a significantly higher diversity than the students.

Our work goes significantly beyond existing benchmarks. While OpenAI’s technical report on GPT-4 6 presents some benchmarks, their evaluation lacks scientific rigor: it fails to provide vital information like the agreement between raters, does not report on details regarding the criteria for assessment or to what extent and how a statistical analysis was conducted for a larger sample of essays. In contrast, our benchmark provides the first (statistically) rigorous and systematic study of essay quality, paired with a computational linguistic analysis of the language employed by humans and two different versions of ChatGPT, offering a glance at how these NLG models develop over time. While our work is focused on argumentative essays in education, the genre is also relevant beyond education. In general, studying argumentative essays is one important aspect to understand how good generative AI models are at conveying arguments and, consequently, persuasive writing in general.

Related work

Natural language generation.

The recent interest in generative AI models can be largely attributed to the public release of ChatGPT, a public interface in the form of an interactive chat based on the InstructGPT 1 model, more commonly referred to as GPT-3.5. In comparison to the original GPT-3 7 and other similar generative large language models based on the transformer architecture like GPT-J 8 , this model was not trained in a purely self-supervised manner (e.g. through masked language modeling). Instead, a pipeline that involved human-written content was used to fine-tune the model and improve the quality of the outputs to both mitigate biases and safety issues, as well as make the generated text more similar to text written by humans. Such models are referred to as Fine-tuned LAnguage Nets (FLANs). For details on their training, we refer to the literature 9 . Notably, this process was recently reproduced with publicly available models such as Alpaca 10 and Dolly (i.e. the complete models can be downloaded and not just accessed through an API). However, we can only assume that a similar process was used for the training of GPT-4 since the paper by OpenAI does not include any details on model training.

Testing of the language competency of large-scale NLG systems has only recently started. Cai et al. 11 show that ChatGPT reuses sentence structure, accesses the intended meaning of an ambiguous word, and identifies the thematic structure of a verb and its arguments, replicating human language use. Mahowald 12 compares ChatGPT’s acceptability judgments to human judgments on the Article + Adjective + Numeral + Noun construction in English. Dentella et al. 13 show that ChatGPT-3 fails to understand low-frequent grammatical constructions like complex nested hierarchies and self-embeddings. In another recent line of research, the structure of automatically generated language is evaluated. Guo et al. 14 show that in question-answer scenarios, ChatGPT-3 uses different linguistic devices than humans. Zhao et al. 15 show that ChatGPT generates longer and more diverse responses when the user is in an apparently negative emotional state.

Given that we aim to identify certain linguistic characteristics of human-written versus AI-generated content, we also draw on related work in the field of linguistic fingerprinting, which assumes that each human has a unique way of using language to express themselves, i.e. the linguistic means that are employed to communicate thoughts, opinions and ideas differ between humans. That these properties can be identified with computational linguistic means has been showcased across different tasks: the computation of a linguistic fingerprint allows to distinguish authors of literary works 16 , the identification of speaker profiles in large public debates 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 and the provision of data for forensic voice comparison in broadcast debates 21 , 22 . For educational purposes, linguistic features are used to measure essay readability 23 , essay cohesion 24 and language performance scores for essay grading 25 . Integrating linguistic fingerprints also yields performance advantages for classification tasks, for instance in predicting user opinion 26 , 27 and identifying individual users 28 .

Limitations of OpenAIs ChatGPT evaluations

OpenAI published a discussion of the model’s performance of several tasks, including Advanced Placement (AP) classes within the US educational system 6 . The subjects used in performance evaluation are diverse and include arts, history, English literature, calculus, statistics, physics, chemistry, economics, and US politics. While the models achieved good or very good marks in most subjects, they did not perform well in English literature. GPT-3.5 also experienced problems with chemistry, macroeconomics, physics, and statistics. While the overall results are impressive, there are several significant issues: firstly, the conflict of interest of the model’s owners poses a problem for the performance interpretation. Secondly, there are issues with the soundness of the assessment beyond the conflict of interest, which make the generalizability of the results hard to assess with respect to the models’ capability to write essays. Notably, the AP exams combine multiple-choice questions with free-text answers. Only the aggregated scores are publicly available. To the best of our knowledge, neither the generated free-text answers, their overall assessment, nor their assessment given specific criteria from the used judgment rubric are published. Thirdly, while the paper states that 1–2 qualified third-party contractors participated in the rating of the free-text answers, it is unclear how often multiple ratings were generated for the same answer and what was the agreement between them. This lack of information hinders a scientifically sound judgement regarding the capabilities of these models in general, but also specifically for essays. Lastly, the owners of the model conducted their study in a few-shot prompt setting, where they gave the models a very structured template as well as an example of a human-written high-quality essay to guide the generation of the answers. This further fine-tuning of what the models generate could have also influenced the output. The results published by the owners go beyond the AP courses which are directly comparable to our work and also consider other student assessments like Graduate Record Examinations (GREs). However, these evaluations suffer from the same problems with the scientific rigor as the AP classes.

Scientific assessment of ChatGPT

Researchers across the globe are currently assessing the individual capabilities of these models with greater scientific rigor. We note that due to the recency and speed of these developments, the hereafter discussed literature has mostly only been published as pre-prints and has not yet been peer-reviewed. In addition to the above issues concretely related to the assessment of the capabilities to generate student essays, it is also worth noting that there are likely large problems with the trustworthiness of evaluations, because of data contamination, i.e. because the benchmark tasks are part of the training of the model, which enables memorization. For example, Aiyappa et al. 29 find evidence that this is likely the case for benchmark results regarding NLP tasks. This complicates the effort by researchers to assess the capabilities of the models beyond memorization.

Nevertheless, the first assessment results are already available – though mostly focused on ChatGPT-3 and not yet ChatGPT-4. Closest to our work is a study by Yeadon et al. 30 , who also investigate ChatGPT-3 performance when writing essays. They grade essays generated by ChatGPT-3 for five physics questions based on criteria that cover academic content, appreciation of the underlying physics, grasp of subject material, addressing the topic, and writing style. For each question, ten essays were generated and rated independently by five researchers. While the sample size precludes a statistical assessment, the results demonstrate that the AI model is capable of writing high-quality physics essays, but that the quality varies in a manner similar to human-written essays.

Guo et al. 14 create a set of free-text question answering tasks based on data they collected from the internet, e.g. question answering from Reddit. The authors then sample thirty triplets of a question, a human answer, and a ChatGPT-3 generated answer and ask human raters to assess if they can detect which was written by a human, and which was written by an AI. While this approach does not directly assess the quality of the output, it serves as a Turing test 31 designed to evaluate whether humans can distinguish between human- and AI-produced output. The results indicate that humans are in fact able to distinguish between the outputs when presented with a pair of answers. Humans familiar with ChatGPT are also able to identify over 80% of AI-generated answers without seeing a human answer in comparison. However, humans who are not yet familiar with ChatGPT-3 are not capable of identifying AI-written answers about 50% of the time. Moreover, the authors also find that the AI-generated outputs are deemed to be more helpful than the human answers in slightly more than half of the cases. This suggests that the strong results from OpenAI’s own benchmarks regarding the capabilities to generate free-text answers generalize beyond the benchmarks.

There are, however, some indicators that the benchmarks may be overly optimistic in their assessment of the model’s capabilities. For example, Kortemeyer 32 conducts a case study to assess how well ChatGPT-3 would perform in a physics class, simulating the tasks that students need to complete as part of the course: answer multiple-choice questions, do homework assignments, ask questions during a lesson, complete programming exercises, and write exams with free-text questions. Notably, ChatGPT-3 was allowed to interact with the instructor for many of the tasks, allowing for multiple attempts as well as feedback on preliminary solutions. The experiment shows that ChatGPT-3’s performance is in many aspects similar to that of the beginning learners and that the model makes similar mistakes, such as omitting units or simply plugging in results from equations. Overall, the AI would have passed the course with a low score of 1.5 out of 4.0. Similarly, Kung et al. 33 study the performance of ChatGPT-3 in the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) and find that the model performs at or near the passing threshold. Their assessment is a bit more optimistic than Kortemeyer’s as they state that this level of performance, comprehensible reasoning and valid clinical insights suggest that models such as ChatGPT may potentially assist human learning in clinical decision making.

Frieder et al. 34 evaluate the capabilities of ChatGPT-3 in solving graduate-level mathematical tasks. They find that while ChatGPT-3 seems to have some mathematical understanding, its level is well below that of an average student and in most cases is not sufficient to pass exams. Yuan et al. 35 consider the arithmetic abilities of language models, including ChatGPT-3 and ChatGPT-4. They find that they exhibit the best performance among other currently available language models (incl. Llama 36 , FLAN-T5 37 , and Bloom 38 ). However, the accuracy of basic arithmetic tasks is still only at 83% when considering correctness to the degree of \(10^{-3}\) , i.e. such models are still not capable of functioning reliably as calculators. In a slightly satiric, yet insightful take, Spencer et al. 39 assess how a scientific paper on gamma-ray astrophysics would look like, if it were written largely with the assistance of ChatGPT-3. They find that while the language capabilities are good and the model is capable of generating equations, the arguments are often flawed and the references to scientific literature are full of hallucinations.

The general reasoning skills of the models may also not be at the level expected from the benchmarks. For example, Cherian et al. 40 evaluate how well ChatGPT-3 performs on eleven puzzles that second graders should be able to solve and find that ChatGPT is only able to solve them on average in 36.4% of attempts, whereas the second graders achieve a mean of 60.4%. However, their sample size is very small and the problem was posed as a multiple-choice question answering problem, which cannot be directly compared to the NLG we consider.

Research gap

Within this article, we address an important part of the current research gap regarding the capabilities of ChatGPT (and similar technologies), guided by the following research questions:

RQ1: How good is ChatGPT based on GPT-3 and GPT-4 at writing argumentative student essays?

RQ2: How do AI-generated essays compare to essays written by students?

RQ3: What are linguistic devices that are characteristic of student versus AI-generated content?

We study these aspects with the help of a large group of teaching professionals who systematically assess a large corpus of student essays. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first large-scale, independent scientific assessment of ChatGPT (or similar models) of this kind. Answering these questions is crucial to understanding the impact of ChatGPT on the future of education.

Materials and methods

The essay topics originate from a corpus of argumentative essays in the field of argument mining 41 . Argumentative essays require students to think critically about a topic and use evidence to establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. The corpus features essays for 90 topics from Essay Forum 42 , an active community for providing writing feedback on different kinds of text and is frequented by high-school students to get feedback from native speakers on their essay-writing capabilities. Information about the age of the writers is not available, but the topics indicate that the essays were written in grades 11–13, indicating that the authors were likely at least 16. Topics range from ‘Should students be taught to cooperate or to compete?’ to ‘Will newspapers become a thing of the past?’. In the corpus, each topic features one human-written essay uploaded and discussed in the forum. The students who wrote the essays are not native speakers. The average length of these essays is 19 sentences with 388 tokens (an average of 2.089 characters) and will be termed ‘student essays’ in the remainder of the paper.

For the present study, we use the topics from Stab and Gurevych 41 and prompt ChatGPT with ‘Write an essay with about 200 words on “[ topic ]”’ to receive automatically-generated essays from the ChatGPT-3 and ChatGPT-4 versions from 22 March 2023 (‘ChatGPT-3 essays’, ‘ChatGPT-4 essays’). No additional prompts for getting the responses were used, i.e. the data was created with a basic prompt in a zero-shot scenario. This is in contrast to the benchmarks by OpenAI, who used an engineered prompt in a few-shot scenario to guide the generation of essays. We note that we decided to ask for 200 words because we noticed a tendency to generate essays that are longer than the desired length by ChatGPT. A prompt asking for 300 words typically yielded essays with more than 400 words. Thus, using the shorter length of 200, we prevent a potential advantage for ChatGPT through longer essays, and instead err on the side of brevity. Similar to the evaluations of free-text answers by OpenAI, we did not consider multiple configurations of the model due to the effort required to obtain human judgments. For the same reason, our data is restricted to ChatGPT and does not include other models available at that time, e.g. Alpaca. We use the browser versions of the tools because we consider this to be a more realistic scenario than using the API. Table 1 below shows the core statistics of the resulting dataset. Supplemental material S1 shows examples for essays from the data set.

Annotation study

Study participants.

The participants had registered for a two-hour online training entitled ‘ChatGPT – Challenges and Opportunities’ conducted by the authors of this paper as a means to provide teachers with some of the technological background of NLG systems in general and ChatGPT in particular. Only teachers permanently employed at secondary schools were allowed to register for this training. Focusing on these experts alone allows us to receive meaningful results as those participants have a wide range of experience in assessing students’ writing. A total of 139 teachers registered for the training, 129 of them teach at grammar schools, and only 10 teachers hold a position at other secondary schools. About half of the registered teachers (68 teachers) have been in service for many years and have successfully applied for promotion. For data protection reasons, we do not know the subject combinations of the registered teachers. We only know that a variety of subjects are represented, including languages (English, French and German), religion/ethics, and science. Supplemental material S5 provides some general information regarding German teacher qualifications.

The training began with an online lecture followed by a discussion phase. Teachers were given an overview of language models and basic information on how ChatGPT was developed. After about 45 minutes, the teachers received a both written and oral explanation of the questionnaire at the core of our study (see Supplementary material S3 ) and were informed that they had 30 minutes to finish the study tasks. The explanation included information on how the data was obtained, why we collect the self-assessment, and how we chose the criteria for the rating of the essays, the overall goal of our research, and a walk-through of the questionnaire. Participation in the questionnaire was voluntary and did not affect the awarding of a training certificate. We further informed participants that all data was collected anonymously and that we would have no way of identifying who participated in the questionnaire. We orally informed participants that they consent to the use of the provided ratings for our research by participating in the survey.

Once these instructions were provided orally and in writing, the link to the online form was given to the participants. The online form was running on a local server that did not log any information that could identify the participants (e.g. IP address) to ensure anonymity. As per instructions, consent for participation was given by using the online form. Due to the full anonymity, we could by definition not document who exactly provided the consent. This was implemented as further insurance that non-participation could not possibly affect being awarded the training certificate.

About 20% of the training participants did not take part in the questionnaire study, the remaining participants consented based on the information provided and participated in the rating of essays. After the questionnaire, we continued with an online lecture on the opportunities of using ChatGPT for teaching as well as AI beyond chatbots. The study protocol was reviewed and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Passau. We further confirm that our study protocol is in accordance with all relevant guidelines.

Questionnaire

The questionnaire consists of three parts: first, a brief self-assessment regarding the English skills of the participants which is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) 43 . We have six levels ranging from ‘comparable to a native speaker’ to ‘some basic skills’ (see supplementary material S3 ). Then each participant was shown six essays. The participants were only shown the generated text and were not provided with information on whether the text was human-written or AI-generated.

The questionnaire covers the seven categories relevant for essay assessment shown below (for details see supplementary material S3 ):

These categories are used as guidelines for essay assessment 44 established by the Ministry for Education of Lower Saxony, Germany. For each criterion, a seven-point Likert scale with scores from zero to six is defined, where zero is the worst score (e.g. no relation to the topic) and six is the best score (e.g. addressed the topic to a special degree). The questionnaire included a written description as guidance for the scoring.

After rating each essay, the participants were also asked to self-assess their confidence in the ratings. We used a five-point Likert scale based on the criteria for the self-assessment of peer-review scores from the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). Once a participant finished rating the six essays, they were shown a summary of their ratings, as well as the individual ratings for each of their essays and the information on how the essay was generated.

Computational linguistic analysis

In order to further explore and compare the quality of the essays written by students and ChatGPT, we consider the six following linguistic characteristics: lexical diversity, sentence complexity, nominalization, presence of modals, epistemic and discourse markers. Those are motivated by previous work: Weiss et al. 25 observe the correlation between measures of lexical, syntactic and discourse complexities to the essay gradings of German high-school examinations while McNamara et al. 45 explore cohesion (indicated, among other things, by connectives), syntactic complexity and lexical diversity in relation to the essay scoring.

Lexical diversity

We identify vocabulary richness by using a well-established measure of textual, lexical diversity (MTLD) 46 which is often used in the field of automated essay grading 25 , 45 , 47 . It takes into account the number of unique words but unlike the best-known measure of lexical diversity, the type-token ratio (TTR), it is not as sensitive to the difference in the length of the texts. In fact, Koizumi and In’nami 48 find it to be least affected by the differences in the length of the texts compared to some other measures of lexical diversity. This is relevant to us due to the difference in average length between the human-written and ChatGPT-generated essays.

Syntactic complexity

We use two measures in order to evaluate the syntactic complexity of the essays. One is based on the maximum depth of the sentence dependency tree which is produced using the spaCy 3.4.2 dependency parser 49 (‘Syntactic complexity (depth)’). For the second measure, we adopt an approach similar in nature to the one by Weiss et al. 25 who use clause structure to evaluate syntactic complexity. In our case, we count the number of conjuncts, clausal modifiers of nouns, adverbial clause modifiers, clausal complements, clausal subjects, and parataxes (‘Syntactic complexity (clauses)’). The supplementary material in S2 shows the difference between sentence complexity based on two examples from the data.

Nominalization is a common feature of a more scientific style of writing 50 and is used as an additional measure for syntactic complexity. In order to explore this feature, we count occurrences of nouns with suffixes such as ‘-ion’, ‘-ment’, ‘-ance’ and a few others which are known to transform verbs into nouns.

Semantic properties

Both modals and epistemic markers signal the commitment of the writer to their statement. We identify modals using the POS-tagging module provided by spaCy as well as a list of epistemic expressions of modality, such as ‘definitely’ and ‘potentially’, also used in other approaches to identifying semantic properties 51 . For epistemic markers we adopt an empirically-driven approach and utilize the epistemic markers identified in a corpus of dialogical argumentation by Hautli-Janisz et al. 52 . We consider expressions such as ‘I think’, ‘it is believed’ and ‘in my opinion’ to be epistemic.

Discourse properties

Discourse markers can be used to measure the coherence quality of a text. This has been explored by Somasundaran et al. 53 who use discourse markers to evaluate the story-telling aspect of student writing while Nadeem et al. 54 incorporated them in their deep learning-based approach to automated essay scoring. In the present paper, we employ the PDTB list of discourse markers 55 which we adjust to exclude words that are often used for purposes other than indicating discourse relations, such as ‘like’, ‘for’, ‘in’ etc.

Statistical methods

We use a within-subjects design for our study. Each participant was shown six randomly selected essays. Results were submitted to the survey system after each essay was completed, in case participants ran out of time and did not finish scoring all six essays. Cronbach’s \(\alpha\) 56 allows us to determine the inter-rater reliability for the rating criterion and data source (human, ChatGPT-3, ChatGPT-4) in order to understand the reliability of our data not only overall, but also for each data source and rating criterion. We use two-sided Wilcoxon-rank-sum tests 57 to confirm the significance of the differences between the data sources for each criterion. We use the same tests to determine the significance of the linguistic characteristics. This results in three comparisons (human vs. ChatGPT-3, human vs. ChatGPT-4, ChatGPT-3 vs. ChatGPT-4) for each of the seven rating criteria and each of the seven linguistic characteristics, i.e. 42 tests. We use the Holm-Bonferroni method 58 for the correction for multiple tests to achieve a family-wise error rate of 0.05. We report the effect size using Cohen’s d 59 . While our data is not perfectly normal, it also does not have severe outliers, so we prefer the clear interpretation of Cohen’s d over the slightly more appropriate, but less accessible non-parametric effect size measures. We report point plots with estimates of the mean scores for each data source and criterion, incl. the 95% confidence interval of these mean values. The confidence intervals are estimated in a non-parametric manner based on bootstrap sampling. We further visualize the distribution for each criterion using violin plots to provide a visual indicator of the spread of the data (see Supplementary material S4 ).

Further, we use the self-assessment of the English skills and confidence in the essay ratings as confounding variables. Through this, we determine if ratings are affected by the language skills or confidence, instead of the actual quality of the essays. We control for the impact of these by measuring Pearson’s correlation coefficient r 60 between the self-assessments and the ratings. We also determine whether the linguistic features are correlated with the ratings as expected. The sentence complexity (both tree depth and dependency clauses), as well as the nominalization, are indicators of the complexity of the language. Similarly, the use of discourse markers should signal a proper logical structure. Finally, a large lexical diversity should be correlated with the ratings for the vocabulary. Same as above, we measure Pearson’s r . We use a two-sided test for the significance based on a \(\beta\) -distribution that models the expected correlations as implemented by scipy 61 . Same as above, we use the Holm-Bonferroni method to account for multiple tests. However, we note that it is likely that all—even tiny—correlations are significant given our amount of data. Consequently, our interpretation of these results focuses on the strength of the correlations.

Our statistical analysis of the data is implemented in Python. We use pandas 1.5.3 and numpy 1.24.2 for the processing of data, pingouin 0.5.3 for the calculation of Cronbach’s \(\alpha\) , scipy 1.10.1 for the Wilcoxon-rank-sum tests Pearson’s r , and seaborn 0.12.2 for the generation of plots, incl. the calculation of error bars that visualize the confidence intervals.

Out of the 111 teachers who completed the questionnaire, 108 rated all six essays, one rated five essays, one rated two essays, and one rated only one essay. This results in 658 ratings for 270 essays (90 topics for each essay type: human-, ChatGPT-3-, ChatGPT-4-generated), with three ratings for 121 essays, two ratings for 144 essays, and one rating for five essays. The inter-rater agreement is consistently excellent ( \(\alpha >0.9\) ), with the exception of language mastery where we have good agreement ( \(\alpha =0.89\) , see Table  2 ). Further, the correlation analysis depicted in supplementary material S4 shows weak positive correlations ( \(r \in 0.11, 0.28]\) ) between the self-assessment for the English skills, respectively the self-assessment for the confidence in ratings and the actual ratings. Overall, this indicates that our ratings are reliable estimates of the actual quality of the essays with a potential small tendency that confidence in ratings and language skills yields better ratings, independent of the data source.

Table  2 and supplementary material S4 characterize the distribution of the ratings for the essays, grouped by the data source. We observe that for all criteria, we have a clear order of the mean values, with students having the worst ratings, ChatGPT-3 in the middle rank, and ChatGPT-4 with the best performance. We further observe that the standard deviations are fairly consistent and slightly larger than one, i.e. the spread is similar for all ratings and essays. This is further supported by the visual analysis of the violin plots.

The statistical analysis of the ratings reported in Table  4 shows that differences between the human-written essays and the ones generated by both ChatGPT models are significant. The effect sizes for human versus ChatGPT-3 essays are between 0.52 and 1.15, i.e. a medium ( \(d \in [0.5,0.8)\) ) to large ( \(d \in [0.8, 1.2)\) ) effect. On the one hand, the smallest effects are observed for the expressiveness and complexity, i.e. when it comes to the overall comprehensiveness and complexity of the sentence structures, the differences between the humans and the ChatGPT-3 model are smallest. On the other hand, the difference in language mastery is larger than all other differences, which indicates that humans are more prone to making mistakes when writing than the NLG models. The magnitude of differences between humans and ChatGPT-4 is larger with effect sizes between 0.88 and 1.43, i.e., a large to very large ( \(d \in [1.2, 2)\) ) effect. Same as for ChatGPT-3, the differences are smallest for expressiveness and complexity and largest for language mastery. Please note that the difference in language mastery between humans and both GPT models does not mean that the humans have low scores for language mastery (M=3.90), but rather that the NLG models have exceptionally high scores (M=5.03 for ChatGPT-3, M=5.25 for ChatGPT-4).

When we consider the differences between the two GPT models, we observe that while ChatGPT-4 has consistently higher mean values for all criteria, only the differences for logic and composition, vocabulary and text linking, and complexity are significant. The effect sizes are between 0.45 and 0.5, i.e. small ( \(d \in [0.2, 0.5)\) ) and medium. Thus, while GPT-4 seems to be an improvement over GPT-3.5 in general, the only clear indicator of this is a better and clearer logical composition and more complex writing with a more diverse vocabulary.

We also observe significant differences in the distribution of linguistic characteristics between all three groups (see Table  3 ). Sentence complexity (depth) is the only category without a significant difference between humans and ChatGPT-3, as well as ChatGPT-3 and ChatGPT-4. There is also no significant difference in the category of discourse markers between humans and ChatGPT-3. The magnitude of the effects varies a lot and is between 0.39 and 1.93, i.e., between small ( \(d \in [0.2, 0.5)\) ) and very large. However, in comparison to the ratings, there is no clear tendency regarding the direction of the differences. For instance, while the ChatGPT models write more complex sentences and use more nominalizations, humans tend to use more modals and epistemic markers instead. The lexical diversity of humans is higher than that of ChatGPT-3 but lower than that of ChatGPT-4. While there is no difference in the use of discourse markers between humans and ChatGPT-3, ChatGPT-4 uses significantly fewer discourse markers.

We detect the expected positive correlations between the complexity ratings and the linguistic markers for sentence complexity ( \(r=0.16\) for depth, \(r=0.19\) for clauses) and nominalizations ( \(r=0.22\) ). However, we observe a negative correlation between the logic ratings and the discourse markers ( \(r=-0.14\) ), which counters our intuition that more frequent use of discourse indicators makes a text more logically coherent. However, this is in line with previous work: McNamara et al. 45 also find no indication that the use of cohesion indices such as discourse connectives correlates with high- and low-proficiency essays. Finally, we observe the expected positive correlation between the ratings for the vocabulary and the lexical diversity ( \(r=0.12\) ). All observed correlations are significant. However, we note that the strength of all these correlations is weak and that the significance itself should not be over-interpreted due to the large sample size.

Our results provide clear answers to the first two research questions that consider the quality of the generated essays: ChatGPT performs well at writing argumentative student essays and outperforms the quality of the human-written essays significantly. The ChatGPT-4 model has (at least) a large effect and is on average about one point better than humans on a seven-point Likert scale.

Regarding the third research question, we find that there are significant linguistic differences between humans and AI-generated content. The AI-generated essays are highly structured, which for instance is reflected by the identical beginnings of the concluding sections of all ChatGPT essays (‘In conclusion, [...]’). The initial sentences of each essay are also very similar starting with a general statement using the main concepts of the essay topics. Although this corresponds to the general structure that is sought after for argumentative essays, it is striking to see that the ChatGPT models are so rigid in realizing this, whereas the human-written essays are looser in representing the guideline on the linguistic surface. Moreover, the linguistic fingerprint has the counter-intuitive property that the use of discourse markers is negatively correlated with logical coherence. We believe that this might be due to the rigid structure of the generated essays: instead of using discourse markers, the AI models provide a clear logical structure by separating the different arguments into paragraphs, thereby reducing the need for discourse markers.

Our data also shows that hallucinations are not a problem in the setting of argumentative essay writing: the essay topics are not really about factual correctness, but rather about argumentation and critical reflection on general concepts which seem to be contained within the knowledge of the AI model. The stochastic nature of the language generation is well-suited for this kind of task, as different plausible arguments can be seen as a sampling from all available arguments for a topic. Nevertheless, we need to perform a more systematic study of the argumentative structures in order to better understand the difference in argumentation between human-written and ChatGPT-generated essay content. Moreover, we also cannot rule out that subtle hallucinations may have been overlooked during the ratings. There are also essays with a low rating for the criteria related to factual correctness, indicating that there might be cases where the AI models still have problems, even if they are, on average, better than the students.

One of the issues with evaluations of the recent large-language models is not accounting for the impact of tainted data when benchmarking such models. While it is certainly possible that the essays that were sourced by Stab and Gurevych 41 from the internet were part of the training data of the GPT models, the proprietary nature of the model training means that we cannot confirm this. However, we note that the generated essays did not resemble the corpus of human essays at all. Moreover, the topics of the essays are general in the sense that any human should be able to reason and write about these topics, just by understanding concepts like ‘cooperation’. Consequently, a taint on these general topics, i.e. the fact that they might be present in the data, is not only possible but is actually expected and unproblematic, as it relates to the capability of the models to learn about concepts, rather than the memorization of specific task solutions.

While we did everything to ensure a sound construct and a high validity of our study, there are still certain issues that may affect our conclusions. Most importantly, neither the writers of the essays, nor their raters, were English native speakers. However, the students purposefully used a forum for English writing frequented by native speakers to ensure the language and content quality of their essays. This indicates that the resulting essays are likely above average for non-native speakers, as they went through at least one round of revisions with the help of native speakers. The teachers were informed that part of the training would be in English to prevent registrations from people without English language skills. Moreover, the self-assessment of the language skills was only weakly correlated with the ratings, indicating that the threat to the soundness of our results is low. While we cannot definitively rule out that our results would not be reproducible with other human raters, the high inter-rater agreement indicates that this is unlikely.

However, our reliance on essays written by non-native speakers affects the external validity and the generalizability of our results. It is certainly possible that native speaking students would perform better in the criteria related to language skills, though it is unclear by how much. However, the language skills were particular strengths of the AI models, meaning that while the difference might be smaller, it is still reasonable to conclude that the AI models would have at least comparable performance to humans, but possibly still better performance, just with a smaller gap. While we cannot rule out a difference for the content-related criteria, we also see no strong argument why native speakers should have better arguments than non-native speakers. Thus, while our results might not fully translate to native speakers, we see no reason why aspects regarding the content should not be similar. Further, our results were obtained based on high-school-level essays. Native and non-native speakers with higher education degrees or experts in fields would likely also achieve a better performance, such that the difference in performance between the AI models and humans would likely also be smaller in such a setting.

We further note that the essay topics may not be an unbiased sample. While Stab and Gurevych 41 randomly sampled the essays from the writing feedback section of an essay forum, it is unclear whether the essays posted there are representative of the general population of essay topics. Nevertheless, we believe that the threat is fairly low because our results are consistent and do not seem to be influenced by certain topics. Further, we cannot with certainty conclude how our results generalize beyond ChatGPT-3 and ChatGPT-4 to similar models like Bard ( https://bard.google.com/?hl=en ) Alpaca, and Dolly. Especially the results for linguistic characteristics are hard to predict. However, since—to the best of our knowledge and given the proprietary nature of some of these models—the general approach to how these models work is similar and the trends for essay quality should hold for models with comparable size and training procedures.

Finally, we want to note that the current speed of progress with generative AI is extremely fast and we are studying moving targets: ChatGPT 3.5 and 4 today are already not the same as the models we studied. Due to a lack of transparency regarding the specific incremental changes, we cannot know or predict how this might affect our results.

Our results provide a strong indication that the fear many teaching professionals have is warranted: the way students do homework and teachers assess it needs to change in a world of generative AI models. For non-native speakers, our results show that when students want to maximize their essay grades, they could easily do so by relying on results from AI models like ChatGPT. The very strong performance of the AI models indicates that this might also be the case for native speakers, though the difference in language skills is probably smaller. However, this is not and cannot be the goal of education. Consequently, educators need to change how they approach homework. Instead of just assigning and grading essays, we need to reflect more on the output of AI tools regarding their reasoning and correctness. AI models need to be seen as an integral part of education, but one which requires careful reflection and training of critical thinking skills.

Furthermore, teachers need to adapt strategies for teaching writing skills: as with the use of calculators, it is necessary to critically reflect with the students on when and how to use those tools. For instance, constructivists 62 argue that learning is enhanced by the active design and creation of unique artifacts by students themselves. In the present case this means that, in the long term, educational objectives may need to be adjusted. This is analogous to teaching good arithmetic skills to younger students and then allowing and encouraging students to use calculators freely in later stages of education. Similarly, once a sound level of literacy has been achieved, strongly integrating AI models in lesson plans may no longer run counter to reasonable learning goals.

In terms of shedding light on the quality and structure of AI-generated essays, this paper makes an important contribution by offering an independent, large-scale and statistically sound account of essay quality, comparing human-written and AI-generated texts. By comparing different versions of ChatGPT, we also offer a glance into the development of these models over time in terms of their linguistic properties and the quality they exhibit. Our results show that while the language generated by ChatGPT is considered very good by humans, there are also notable structural differences, e.g. in the use of discourse markers. This demonstrates that an in-depth consideration not only of the capabilities of generative AI models is required (i.e. which tasks can they be used for), but also of the language they generate. For example, if we read many AI-generated texts that use fewer discourse markers, it raises the question if and how this would affect our human use of discourse markers. Understanding how AI-generated texts differ from human-written enables us to look for these differences, to reason about their potential impact, and to study and possibly mitigate this impact.

1 Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is at the cutting edge of technological development and has the potential to profoundly and incomparably influence humankind's future [ 1 ]. Understanding the consequences of AI is increasingly important as it develops and permeates more facets of society. The goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive exploration of AI's transformative potential, applications, ethical considerations, challenges, and opportunities.

AI has rapidly advanced, and this progress has deep historical roots. AI has experienced important turning points and discoveries that have fueled its development from its early beginnings in the 1950s to the present [ 2 ]. These developments have sped up the process of developing artificial intelligence on par with that of humans, opening up new avenues for exploration.

AI comprises a wide range of techniques and technologies, including computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, and symbolic AI [ 3 ]. These technologies provide machines the ability to think like humans do by enabling them to perceive, analyze, learn, and make decisions. Understanding the intricacies of these AI systems and their underlying algorithms is essential to appreciate the immense potential they hold.

AI has a wide range of transformational applications that affect practically every aspect of our life. In healthcare, AI is revolutionizing medical diagnostics, enabling personalized treatments, and assisting in complex surgical procedures [ 4 ]. The transportation sector is witnessing the emergence of autonomous vehicles and intelligent traffic management systems, promising safer and more efficient mobility [ 5 ]. In finance and economics, AI is reshaping algorithmic trading, fraud detection, and economic forecasting, altering the dynamics of global markets [ 6 ]. Moreover, AI is transforming education by offering personalized learning experiences and intelligent tutoring systems, fostering individual growth and enhancing educational outcomes [ 7 ].

However, as AI proliferates, it brings with it ethical and societal implications that warrant careful examination. Concerns about job displacement and the future of work arise as automation and AI technologies increasingly replace human labor. Privacy and data security become paramount as AI relies on vast amounts of personal information. Issues of bias and fairness emerge as AI decision-making algorithms can inadvertently perpetuate discriminatory practices. Moreover, the impact of AI on human autonomy raises profound questions about the boundaries between human agency and technological influence [ 8 ].

The challenges and risks associated with AI should not be overlooked. The notion of superintelligence and its potential existential risks demand rigorous evaluation and proactive measures. Transparency and accountability in AI systems are imperative to ensure trust and prevent unintended consequences [ 9 ]. Addressing societal disparities, such as unemployment and socioeconomic inequalities exacerbated by AI, requires careful consideration and policy interventions [ 10 ]. Regulation and governance frameworks must be developed to guide the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies.

Despite these challenges, AI has tremendous potential for the future [ 11 ]. Collaboration between AI and human intelligence has the potential to lead to extraordinary improvements in human skills and the resolution of complicated issues. AI augmentation, in which humans and machines collaborate, has potential in a variety of fields, ranging from healthcare to scientific study. Explainable AI advancements promote transparency and trust, allowing for improved understanding and ethical decision-making. In addition, ethical principles and rules for AI research and governance serve as a road map for responsible AI practices.

The purpose of this article is to provide a thorough grasp of AI's revolutionary potential for humanity. We dive into the complicated interplay between AI and society by investigating its applications, ethical considerations, challenges, and opportunities. Through careful analysis and forward-thinking, we can leverage the power of AI to shape a future that is equitable, inclusive, and beneficial for all.

2 Methodology

2.1 research gap.

Despite the burgeoning literature on the societal implications of AI, a comprehensive investigation into the intricate interplay between AI's multifaceted impacts and the development of effective strategies to harness its potential remains relatively underexplored. While existing research delves into individual aspects of AI's influence, a holistic understanding of its far-reaching consequences and the actionable steps required for its responsible integration demands further exploration.

2.2 Study objectives

This study aims to address the aforementioned research gap by pursuing the following objectives:

Comprehensive impact assessment: To analyze and evaluate the multidimensional impact of artificial intelligence across diverse sectors, including healthcare, transportation, finance, and education. This involves investigating how AI applications are transforming industries and shaping societal dynamics.

Ethical and societal considerations: To critically examine the ethical and societal implications stemming from AI's proliferation, encompassing areas such as job displacement, privacy concerns, bias mitigation, and the delicate balance between human autonomy and technological influence.

Challenges and opportunities: To identify and elucidate the challenges and opportunities that accompany the widespread integration of AI technologies. This involves exploring potential risks and benefits, as well as the regulatory and governance frameworks required for ensuring responsible AI development.

Societal, economic, and entrepreneurial impact: To delve into the broader impact of AI on society, economy, and entrepreneurship, and to provide a thorough discussion and argument on the ways AI is shaping these domains. This includes considering how AI is altering business models, employment dynamics, economic growth, and innovative entrepreneurship.

Empirical exploration: To conduct a rigorous empirical exploration through data analysis, drawing from a comprehensive collection of relevant and reputable sources. This includes scholarly articles, reports, and established online platforms to establish a solid theoretical foundation.

By systematically addressing these objectives, this study seeks to shed light on the intricate relationship between artificial intelligence and its societal, ethical, and economic implications, providing valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners alike.

3 Historical overview of Artificial Intelligence

3.1 origins of ai and its early development.

Artificial intelligence can be traced back to the early dreams of researchers and scientists who wanted to understand and duplicate human intellect in computers. The core concepts of AI were laid during the Dartmouth Conference in 1956, when John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon coined the name "Artificial Intelligence" and outlined the goal of building machines that could simulate human intelligence [ 12 ]. The early development of AI was focused on symbolic AI, which involves employing logical principles and symbolic representations to mimic human reasoning and problem-solving. Early AI systems, such as the Logic Theorist and the General Problem Solver, demonstrated the ability of machines to solve mathematical and logical issues. However, advancement in AI was hampered by the time's low computer capacity and the difficulties of encoding comprehensive human knowledge.

3.2 Key milestones in AI research and technological advancements

Over the decades, the field of AI has seen significant milestones and technological achievements [ 8 , 9 , 12 , 13 ]. AI researchers made significant advances in natural language processing and knowledge representation in the 1960s and 1970s, establishing the framework for language-based AI systems. These improvements resulted in the 1980s development of expert systems, which used rule-based algorithms to make choices in specific domains. Expert systems have found use in medical diagnosis, financial analysis, and industrial process control. IBM's Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, marking a watershed point in AI's ability to outperform human professionals in strategic thinking. This accomplishment demonstrated the effectiveness of brute-force computing and advanced algorithms in handling challenging tasks.

With the advent of machine learning and neural networks in the twenty-first century, AI research saw a paradigm change. The availability of large datasets and computer resources facilitated neural network training, resulting in advancements in domains such as speech recognition, image classification, and natural language understanding. Deep learning, a subtype of machine learning, transformed AI by allowing systems to create hierarchical representations from data, replicating human brain functions. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have sped up advances in computer vision and natural language processing. These advancements fueled the development of intelligent virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, and enabled AI systems to outperform humans in picture recognition and language translation tasks.

3.3 Evolution of AI technologies and their impact on society

The advancement of AI technology has had a significant impact on a variety of societal areas. Automation powered by AI has revolutionized industries, streamlining processes and increasing efficiency. In manufacturing, robots and AI-powered systems have revolutionized assembly lines and enabled mass customization [ 3 ]. AI's presence in the healthcare sector has resulted in improved diagnostic accuracy, personalized treatment plans, and drug discovery. AI algorithms are now capable of detecting medical conditions from medical images with greater precision than human experts [ 2 ].

In finance and economics [ 6 ], AI-driven algorithms have revolutionized trading strategies, risk assessment, and fraud detection, influencing the dynamics of global markets. AI-powered recommendation systems have reshaped the entertainment and e-commerce industries, providing personalized content and product suggestions to consumers. The transportation sector is on the cusp of a revolution, with AI paving the way for self-driving vehicles, optimizing traffic management, and enabling intelligent transportation systems [ 5 ].

Despite its remarkable advancements, AI's expanding influence raises ethical, legal, and societal challenges. Concerns surrounding job displacement and the future of work have sparked discussions about reskilling the workforce and creating new job opportunities that complement AI-driven technologies. Ethical considerations around data privacy, transparency, and fairness in AI decision-making have become critical issues, prompting the need for robust regulations and ethical guidelines [ 9 ].

The responsible deployment of AI in critical domains, such as healthcare and autonomous vehicles, demands stringent safety measures and accountability to avoid potential harm to human lives. Additionally, addressing the issue of bias in AI algorithms is imperative to ensure equitable outcomes and promote societal trust [ 10 ].

Accordingly, the historical overview of AI reveals a fascinating journey of innovation, breakthroughs, and paradigm shifts. From its inception as a concept to the current era of deep learning and neural networks, AI has made remarkable strides, impacting various sectors and aspects of society. Understanding the historical context and technological advancements of AI is crucial in comprehending its present significance and envisioning its transformative potential for the future of humanity. Nonetheless, responsible development, ethical considerations, and collaboration between stakeholders will be essential in harnessing AI's power to benefit humanity while addressing its challenges.

4 Understanding Artificial Intelligence

4.1 definition and scope of ai.

AI is a multidisciplinary field that tries to develop intelligent agents capable of executing activities that would normally require human intelligence [ 12 ]. Reasoning, problem-solving, learning, perception, and language comprehension are examples of these tasks. AI aims to mimic human cognitive abilities by allowing robots to interpret data, make decisions, and adapt to new settings. AI has a wide range of applications, ranging from simple rule-based systems to powerful deep learning algorithms. While AI has made significant strides in various domains, achieving human-level intelligence, often referred to as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), remains a formidable challenge.

4.2 Different types of AI systems

AI systems can be categorized into different types based on their approaches and methodologies. Symbolic AI [ 14 ], also known as rule-based AI, relies on predefined rules and logical reasoning to solve problems. Expert systems [ 15 ], which fall under symbolic AI, use a knowledge base and an inference engine to mimic the decision-making of human experts in specific domains. Another key category is machine learning [ 16 ], which enables AI systems to learn from data and improve their performance over time without explicit programming. Machine learning includes supervised learning, where the algorithm is trained on labeled data; unsupervised learning, where the algorithm learns patterns and structures from unlabeled data; and reinforcement learning, where the algorithm learns by interacting with an environment and receiving feedback in the form of rewards or penalties. Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, employs artificial neural networks with multiple layers to automatically learn hierarchical representations of data, leading to breakthroughs in computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing.

4.3 Fundamental concepts in AI

Neural Networks: Neural networks are computational models inspired by the structure and functioning of the human brain [ 17 ]. They consist of interconnected nodes, called neurons, organized in layers. Each neuron processes incoming data and applies an activation function to produce an output. Deep neural networks with many layers have revolutionized AI by enabling complex feature extraction and high-level abstractions from data.

Algorithms: AI algorithms govern the learning and decision-making processes of AI systems. These algorithms can be as simple as linear regression or as complex as convolutional neural networks [ 14 ]. The choice of algorithms is crucial in determining the performance and efficiency of AI applications.

Natural language processing (NLP): NLP enables AI systems to interact and understand human language [ 18 ]. NLP applications range from sentiment analysis and language translation to chatbots and virtual assistants. Advanced NLP models utilize deep learning techniques, such as Transformers, to process contextual information and improve language understanding.

4.4 Ethical considerations in AI development and deployment

The rapid advancement of AI raises ethical challenges that require careful consideration. One prominent concern is bias in AI algorithms [ 10 ], which can lead to unfair or discriminatory outcomes, especially in domains like hiring and criminal justice. Ensuring transparency and explainability in AI decision-making is essential to build trust and accountability. Privacy and data security are paramount, as AI systems often require large amounts of data to function effectively. Safeguarding personal information and preventing data breaches are critical aspects of responsible AI deployment. Additionally, the potential impact of AI on employment and societal dynamics necessitates thoughtful planning and policies to ensure a smooth transition and address potential workforce displacement.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence is fundamental to appreciating its vast potential and grappling with the ethical challenges it poses. AI's definition and scope encompass a wide range of tasks, from reasoning to language understanding. Different types of AI systems, such as symbolic AI, machine learning, and deep learning, provide diverse approaches to problem-solving and learning. Essential concepts in AI, like neural networks and algorithms, underpin its functionality and enable groundbreaking applications. However, ethical considerations in AI development and deployment are paramount to foster responsible AI implementation and ensure that AI benefits society equitably. By comprehensively understanding AI, we can navigate its evolving landscape with the utmost responsibility and strive to harness its capabilities for the greater good.

5 AI applications in various fields

AI's transformative impact extends across healthcare, transportation, finance, and education. This section explores these applications and addresses ethical considerations for responsible AI development and deployment. Figure  1 presents an overview of the wide-ranging applications of AI across various fields.

5.1 Healthcare

The use of AI in healthcare has heralded a new age of revolutionary advances, altering medical procedures and having a profound impact on patient care [ 2 ]. Machine learning algorithms are used in AI-powered medical diagnosis and treatment systems to assess massive volumes of patient data, such as medical records, imaging investigations, and genetic information [ 4 ]. These AI technologies can help healthcare personnel make more precise and fast diagnoses by comparing patient data with huge databases and patterns, resulting in earlier disease identification and more effective treatment strategies. Furthermore, AI's ability to process and interpret complex medical pictures, such as MRI and CT scans, has shown outstanding accuracy in detecting anomalies and assisting radiologists in spotting probable problems that the human eye may ignore [ 10 ].

Precision medicine, powered by AI, takes personalization to a new level by tailoring therapies to individual patients' genetic makeup, lifestyle, and medical history [ 19 ]. AI algorithms can offer individualized healthcare regimens that maximize treatment efficacy while minimizing adverse effects, resulting in improved patient outcomes and a higher quality of life.

AI-assisted robotic surgeries represent another milestone in healthcare AI applications. Advanced robotic systems, guided by AI algorithms, assist surgeons during surgical procedures by providing real-time insights, enhanced dexterity, and precision [ 20 ]. These AI-driven robotic assistants can make surgery less invasive, reducing trauma to patients, shortening recovery times, and minimizing the risk of complications. The integration of AI into surgical workflows has significantly raised the bar for surgical precision, resulting in superior patient care and expanded surgical capabilities.

5.2 Transportation

The transportation sector is undergoing a revolutionary transformation driven by AI applications. One of the most anticipated breakthroughs is the development of autonomous vehicles and self-driving technologies [ 5 ]. AI algorithms, together with advanced sensors and cameras, enable vehicles to navigate complex traffic environments autonomously. By continuously processing real-time data, AI-equipped self-driving cars can detect and respond to obstacles, traffic signals, and pedestrian movements, significantly reducing the likelihood of accidents caused by human errors. The potential impact of autonomous vehicles extends beyond enhancing road safety; it holds the promise of alleviating traffic congestion, optimizing energy consumption, and enabling seamless transportation for the elderly and disabled populations.

Intelligent traffic management systems powered by AI offer promising solutions to tackle traffic congestion and enhance overall transportation efficiency [ 21 ]. These AI systems can optimize traffic flow, identify congestion hotspots, and dynamically alter traffic signal timings to cut wait times by collecting data from numerous sources such as traffic cameras, GPS devices, and weather conditions. Smart traffic management has the potential to improve urban mobility while also lowering carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.

AI is also important in optimizing logistics and transportation networks [ 22 ]. AI algorithms can optimize supply chain operations, cut transportation costs, and enhance delivery times by evaluating massive volumes of data on shipping routes, cargo loads, and transportation timetables. Furthermore, AI's predictive capabilities allow organizations to more efficiently forecast demand variations and plan inventory management, decreasing waste and improving overall operational efficiency.

5.3 Finance and economics

The impact of AI on the financial and economics sectors has been tremendous, with significant changes in established processes and the introduction of creative solutions [ 6 ]. Algorithmic trading powered by AI has transformed financial markets, enabling faster and more data-driven decision-making. Machine learning algorithms automatically evaluate market data, discover patterns, and execute trades, resulting in better investing strategies and more efficient capital allocation. AI-powered trading systems can react to market movements and quickly adjust trading positions, improving trading results and portfolio performance.

AI's contribution to risk assessment and fraud detection in the financial sector has been critical in guaranteeing the security and integrity of financial transactions [ 23 ]. In real-time, machine learning algorithms may evaluate historical transaction data, find aberrant trends, and flag potentially fraudulent actions. By continuously learning from new data, these AI systems can react to evolving fraud tendencies and increase the resilience of financial institutions against fraudulent threats.

With the incorporation of AI technology, economic forecasting and predictive analytics have also seen considerable breakthroughs [ 24 ]. To provide more accurate forecasts and insights, AI-powered models may process large and diverse datasets such as economic indicators, consumer behavior, and macroeconomic factors. AI-driven economic projections can help policymakers and businesses make educated decisions, plan resource allocation, and adapt proactively to changing economic situations, resulting in more stable and resilient economies.

5.4 Education

AI is altering the educational landscape by bringing creative solutions to improve student learning experiences and outcomes [ 7 , 9 ]. Artificial intelligence-based adaptive learning systems use data analytics and machine learning algorithms to assess individual students' strengths and weaknesses in real time. Adaptive learning platforms generate tailored learning pathways by adapting instructional content to each student's unique learning pace and preferences, increasing engagement and information retention. Targeted interventions, interactive courses, and timely feedback can help students improve their academic performance and gain a deeper grasp of subjects.

Intelligent teaching systems are yet another advancement in educational AI [ 25 ]. These systems use natural language processing and machine learning to provide students with tailored teaching and support. Intelligent tutoring systems, which can recognize and respond to students' inquiries and learning demands, provide personalised advice, promote self-directed learning, and reinforce concepts through interactive exercises. This individualized learning experience not only improves students' academic performance, but it also instills confidence and motivation to pursue interests further.

AI is also important in measuring learning outcomes and educational analytics [ 26 ]. AI algorithms can provide significant insights into learning patterns, instructional efficacy, and curriculum design by evaluating massive amounts of educational data, including student performance indicators and assessment results. These data-driven insights can be used by educational institutions and policymakers to optimize educational programs, identify areas for development, and create evidence-based policies that encourage improved educational results.

6 Ethical and societal implications of AI

This section investigates the ethical and societal consequences of artificial intelligence. Figure  2 depicts an in-depth examination of the ethical and societal ramifications of AI. This graphic depicts the primary areas of influence, which include employment, privacy, fairness, and human autonomy. Understanding these ramifications is critical for navigating the appropriate development and deployment of AI technology, assuring an ethical and societally beneficial future.

6.1 Impact on employment and workforce

Concerns have been raised concerning the influence of AI technologies on jobs and the workforce as they have become more widely adopted. Certain work roles may be vulnerable to displacement as AI-driven automation becomes more ubiquitous, potentially leading to unemployment and economic instability [ 27 , 28 ]. Routine and repetitive tasks are especially prone to automation, potentially harming industries including manufacturing, customer service, and data input. Furthermore, AI's ability to analyze massive amounts of data and execute complicated tasks may replace certain specialized positions, such as data analysis and pattern recognition, contributing to labor displacement [ 41 ]. To solve this challenge, proactive measures are required to reskill and upskill the workforce for the AI era. Investing in education and training programs that equip employees with AI-related skills such as data analysis, programming, and problem-solving will allow easier job transitions and foster a more adaptable and resilient labor market. Governments, businesses, and educational institutions must collaborate to develop comprehensive policies and initiatives that prepare individuals for the changing job landscape and ensure that the benefits of AI are distributed equitably across society.

6.2 Privacy, security, and data ethics

The increasing reliance on AI systems, particularly those that utilize vast amounts of personal data, raises critical ethical considerations related to privacy and data ethics [ 29 ]. The responsible and ethical use of data becomes paramount, requiring organizations to ensure informed consent, data anonymization, and stringent data protection measures. The misuse or unauthorized access to personal data by AI systems poses significant risks to individuals' privacy and can lead to various forms of exploitation, such as identity theft and targeted advertising. Furthermore, if AI technologies are not adequately regulated, they may intensify surveillance issues, potentially resulting in infringement of civil liberties and private rights [ 42 ]. To prevent these threats, legislators must enact strong data protection legislation and ethical norms that regulate AI systems' collection, storage, and use of personal data. Transparency and accountability in AI development and deployment are critical for establishing public trust and guaranteeing responsible data management.

6.3 Bias, fairness, and transparency in AI systems

AI systems are only as unbiased as the data on which they are trained, and inherent biases in the data might result in biased AI decision-making [ 30 ]. Algorithmic bias can lead to unequal treatment and discrimination, sustaining societal imbalances and strengthening preexisting prejudices. To address algorithmic prejudice, thorough data curation is required, as is diversity in data representation, as well as constant monitoring and evaluation of AI systems for any biases. Furthermore, guaranteeing justice and openness in AI decision-making is critical for increasing public trust in AI systems. AI systems must be built to provide explicit explanations for their judgments, allowing users to comprehend the logic underlying AI-generated outcomes. In order to encourage transparency and accountability, AI developers should share the criteria and data utilized in constructing AI models.

6.4 AI and human autonomy

As AI technologies advance, they have the potential to influence human autonomy and decision-making [ 31 ]. AI-powered recommendation systems, personalized marketing, and social media algorithms may impact human behavior, preferences, and views, creating ethical concerns about individual manipulation and persuasion. In the design and deployment of AI systems, striking a balance between improving user experiences and protecting human agency becomes crucial [ 43 ]. Policymakers and technologists must consider the ethical implications of AI-driven persuasion and manipulation and implement safeguards to protect individuals from undue influence. Additionally, AI developers should adopt ethical guidelines that prioritize human autonomy and empower users to make informed choices and maintain control over their digital experiences.

Accordingly, as AI technologies continue to advance and permeate various aspects of society, addressing the ethical and societal implications of AI becomes paramount. The impact of AI on employment and the workforce necessitates proactive efforts to reskill and upskill individuals, ensuring that the benefits of AI are shared inclusively. Privacy, security, and data ethics demand responsible data handling and robust regulations to safeguard individuals' personal information [ 44 ]. Addressing bias, ensuring fairness and transparency, and preserving human autonomy are crucial in building trust and fostering the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies. By navigating these ethical challenges thoughtfully and collaboratively, we can harness the potential of AI to shape a future that prioritizes human well-being and societal values.

7 Challenges, risks, and regulation of Artificial Intelligence

Section 7 discusses the challenges, risks, and regulation of AI. It explores an overview concerns related to superintelligence, transparency, unemployment, and ethical considerations. Understanding these complexities is vital for guiding responsible AI development and governance.

7.1 Superintelligence and existential risks

As AI technologies advance, the prospect of creating Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or superintelligent systems raises existential risks [ 32 ]. Superintelligence refers to AI systems that surpass human intelligence across all domains, potentially leading to unforeseen and uncontrollable consequences. To avoid disastrous outcomes, it is vital that AGI is developed with rigorous safety mechanisms and is linked with human values. The fear is that AGI will outpace human comprehension and control, resulting in unanticipated acts or decisions with far-reaching and irreversible repercussions. To solve this, researchers and governments must engage in AGI safety research and form worldwide partnerships to construct governance structures that prioritize the safe and responsible development of AGI.

7.2 Lack of transparency and accountability in AI systems

One of the major issues in AI is the lack of transparency and accountability in the decision-making processes of AI systems [ 30 ]. Complex AI systems, such as deep neural networks, can be difficult to analyze and explain, giving rise to the "black box" AI problem [ 16 ]. This lack of transparency raises worries about possible biases, errors, or discriminatory effects from AI judgments. Researchers and developers must focus on constructing interpretable AI models that can provide explicit explanations for their actions in order to establish confidence and ensure the responsible usage of AI. Furthermore, building accountability frameworks that hold businesses and developers accountable for AI system outcomes is critical in addressing potential legal and ethical repercussions.

7.3 Unemployment, socioeconomic disparities, and the future of work

The rapid deployment of AI-driven automation has ramifications for employment and social inequities. As AI replaces certain job roles and tasks, there is a possibility of job displacement, leading to unemployment and income inequality [ 28 ]. Low-skilled workers in industries highly susceptible to automation may face the most significant challenges in transitioning to new job opportunities. Addressing these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach, including retraining and upskilling programs, social safety nets, and policies that promote job creation in emerging AI-related sectors. Additionally, measures such as universal basic income and shorter workweeks have been proposed to alleviate the potential socioeconomic impact of AI-driven automation on the workforce.

7.4 Ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations for AI development and deployment

The rapid advancement of AI technologies has outpaced the development of comprehensive ethical, legal, and regulatory frameworks [ 33 ]. Ensuring that AI is developed and deployed responsibly and ethically is crucial to avoid potential harm to individuals and society at large. Ethical considerations include addressing algorithmic bias, ensuring fairness, and safeguarding privacy and data rights. Legal and regulatory considerations encompass liability issues, data protection laws, and intellectual property rights related to AI systems. The need for international cooperation in formulating AI governance frameworks is paramount, as AI's impact transcends national boundaries. Policymakers, industry stakeholders, and experts must work collaboratively to establish guidelines and standards that promote the ethical development and use of AI technologies while striking a balance between innovation and protecting the common good.

In conclusion, while AI technologies hold immense promise, they also present significant challenges and risks that must be addressed proactively and responsibly. Superintelligence and existential risks demand focused research and governance to ensure AGI development is aligned with human values. The lack of transparency and accountability in AI systems necessitates efforts to create interpretable and accountable AI models. The potential impact of AI-driven automation on employment and socioeconomic disparities requires comprehensive policies and safety nets to support workforce transitions. Ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations are vital in fostering the responsible development and deployment of AI while balancing innovation with societal well-being. By addressing these challenges and risks collectively, we can harness the transformative potential of AI while safeguarding the welfare of humanity.

8 Opportunities and future directions

8.1 collaborative intelligence: human–ai collaboration.

The future of AI lies in collaborative intelligence, where humans and AI systems work together synergistically to achieve outcomes that neither could achieve alone [ 34 ]. Human-AI collaboration has the potential to revolutionize various fields, from healthcare and education to scientific research and creative endeavors. By combining human creativity, intuition, and empathy with AI's computational power, data analysis, and pattern recognition, we can tackle complex challenges more effectively. Collaborative intelligence enables AI systems to assist humans in decision-making, provide contextually relevant information, and augment human capabilities in problem-solving and innovation. However, realizing the full potential of collaborative intelligence requires addressing human-AI interaction challenges, ensuring seamless communication, and fostering a human-centric approach to AI system design.

8.2 Augmentation and amplification of human capabilities with AI

The role of AI in the future is not to replace people, but to maximize human potential. AI technology, through augmentation and amplification, can enable humans to thrive in their fields, whether in healthcare, creativity, or professional activities [ 35 ]. AI-powered technologies can let professionals focus on higher-level jobs that involve human creativity, empathy, and critical thinking by streamlining workflows, automating repetitive operations, and providing real-time insights. Furthermore, AI-powered personalized learning and adaptive tutoring systems may tailor to individual learning demands, allowing students and lifelong learners to reach their full potential. Augmenting human talents with AI creates a symbiotic connection in which AI acts as a necessary tool that complements human expertise, resulting in greater productivity, creativity, and overall well-being.

8.3 Explainable AI: advancements in interpretability and trustworthiness

To overcome the "black box" aspect of large AI algorithms, explainable AI is a vital area of research and development. As AI systems grow more common, it is critical to understand how they make judgments and make predictions. Advances in interpretability approaches enable AI to provide unambiguous explanations for its thinking, increasing the transparency, trustworthiness, and accountability of AI systems [ 36 ]. Not only can explainable AI increase user trust, but it also allows subject experts to assess AI-generated outputs and uncover potential biases or inaccuracies. Researchers are investigating novel ways for improving the explainability of AI systems while preserving high performance, such as interpretable machine learning models and transparent AI algorithms. We can bridge the gap between AI's capabilities and human understanding by creating explainable AI, making AI more accessible and helpful across a wide range of applications.

8.4 Ethical frameworks and guidelines for AI development and governance

The future of AI necessitates strong ethical frameworks and norms that value human well-being, fairness, and transparency [ 37 ]. Establishing thorough ethical guidelines is critical for navigating the ethical issues of AI, such as algorithmic bias, privacy problems, and the influence of AI on society. Policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers must collaborate to create AI systems that conform to ethical principles while respecting human rights and values. Furthermore, global cooperation is critical for addressing cross-border ethical quandaries and ensuring a consistent approach to AI regulation. To set norms that safeguard individuals, promote societal good, and prevent AI exploitation, ethical AI development necessitates a multi-stakeholder approach encompassing academia, industry, governments, and civil society. Furthermore, accountability frameworks that hold businesses accountable for the acts and consequences of their AI systems are critical in creating trust and responsible AI implementation.

The future of AI is full of potential to make breakthrough advances that benefit humanity. Collaborative intelligence, in which humans and AI systems collaborate, has potential for addressing challenging challenges and achieving breakthroughs across multiple areas. AI can help humans achieve unprecedented levels of efficiency and creativity. Advances in explainable AI will increase openness and trust, allowing for the responsible integration of AI into key applications. However, realizing this vision requires a strong foundation of ethical principles and norms to guarantee AI is created and deployed ethically, with human welfare at its core. By embracing these opportunities and adopting a human-centric approach, we can design a future in which AI serves as a powerful tool for positive change while respecting the values and principles that characterize our shared humanity.

9 AI and global challenges

9.1 climate change and environmental sustainability.

The use of AI technology to climate change and environmental sustainability opens up new avenues for addressing some of the world's most critical issues. AI's data processing and pattern recognition capabilities make it a strong tool for climate modeling and prediction. Artificial intelligence-powered climate models can examine massive amounts of environmental data, such as temperature records, carbon emissions, and weather patterns, to produce more accurate and actionable predictions of climate change impacts [ 38 ]. Furthermore, AI has the potential to optimize energy usage and resource management, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future. AI-powered systems can assess energy use trends, detect inefficiencies, and offer energy conservation and renewable energy integration options. Furthermore, AI-enabled solutions, such as autonomous drones for environmental monitoring and analysis, can help with environmental conservation efforts by monitoring deforestation, wildlife habitats, and illegal poaching activities, allowing for more effective conservation strategies and the protection of biodiversity.

9.2 Public health and pandemic response

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the potential of artificial intelligence in public health and pandemic response. AI-based techniques for early diagnosis and control of infectious diseases are critical in preventing outbreaks from spreading. AI algorithms may evaluate a wide range of data sources, including social media, medical records, and mobility patterns, to detect early indicators of disease outbreaks and pinpoint high-risk locations for targeted interventions [ 39 ]. Furthermore, AI-driven vaccine development and distribution strategies can speed up the vaccine discovery process and optimize vaccine distribution based on parameters such as population density and vulnerability. The power of AI to analyze massive amounts of healthcare data can lead to better public health decisions and resource allocation. AI models, for example, may predict disease patterns, identify high-risk population groups, and optimize healthcare supply chain operations to ensure timely and efficient delivery of medicinal supplies.

9.3 Social justice and equity

AI has the ability to play a critical role in advancing social justice and equity by tackling systemic biases and inequalities. AI applications can be used to discover and correct biases in domains such as criminal justice, recruiting processes, and resource allocation. By harnessing AI's data-driven insights, governments and institutions can create evidence-based policies that minimize discrimination and enhance outcomes for underrepresented people [ 40 ]. When employing AI for social justice, ethical considerations are crucial because critical decisions affecting people's lives are involved. To guarantee that AI technologies have a beneficial impact, they must be developed and used in a transparent, fair, and accountable manner. Furthermore, AI can be used to encourage inclusivity and diversity in decision-making processes. Organizations may build more fair policies and foster a more inclusive society by utilizing AI algorithms that examine multiple perspectives and prioritize representation.

AI's new contribution to global concerns is a transformative chance to address humanity's most critical issues. In the fight against climate change, artificial intelligence (AI) can provide vital insights for better decision-making, optimize resource management, and aid in environmental conservation efforts. AI-powered solutions in public health can increase early identification of infectious diseases, speed up vaccine research, and improve healthcare data analysis for better public health outcomes. Furthermore, AI has the ability to promote social justice and equity by eliminating biases, increasing transparency, and utilizing technology for inclusivity and diversity. As we use AI to address global concerns, it is critical that we approach its development and deployment responsibly, ensuring that the advantages of AI are dispersed equally and line with the ideals and ambitions of a better, more sustainable world.

10 Conclusion

In this paper, we looked at the multidimensional environment of AI and its profound impact on humanity. We began by reviewing the historical evolution of AI, from its origins to the current state of cutting-edge technologies. The key types of AI systems, including symbolic AI, machine learning, and deep learning, were elucidated, along with their fundamental concepts like neural networks and algorithms. We identified AI's potential to revolutionize various fields, including healthcare, transportation, finance, and education, with applications ranging from medical diagnosis and autonomous vehicles to algorithmic trading and personalized learning. We highlighted AI's ethical implications, including concerns related to bias, fairness, transparency, and human autonomy.

10.2 Discussion of the transformative potential of AI for humanity

Throughout this work, it became clear that AI has enormous revolutionary potential for humanity. AI has already demonstrated its ability to improve medical diagnosis, optimize transportation, enhance financial decision-making, and revolutionize education. Collaborative intelligence between humans and AI opens new frontiers, amplifying human capabilities and fostering creativity and innovation. Furthermore, AI can contribute significantly to solving global challenges, including climate change, public health, and social justice, through climate modeling, early disease detection, and reducing bias in decision-making. The transformative potential of AI lies in its capacity to augment human abilities, foster data-driven decision-making, and address critical societal challenges.

10.3 Implications for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners

The advent of AI brings forth profound implications for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. Policymakers must proactively address AI's ethical, legal, and societal implications, crafting comprehensive regulations and guidelines that protect individual rights and promote equitable access to AI-driven innovations. 10.4 Directions for future research and responsible AI development

As AI continues to advance, future research should prioritize several key areas. AI safety and explainability must be at the forefront, ensuring that AI systems are transparent, interpretable, and accountable. Additionally, addressing AI's impact on employment and the workforce requires research into effective reskilling and upskilling programs to support individuals in the AI-driven economy. Ethical AI development should be ingrained into research and industry practices, promoting fairness, inclusivity, and the avoidance of harmful consequences. Collaboration and international cooperation are vital to develop responsible AI frameworks that transcend geographical boundaries and address global challenges.

AI stands at the threshold of reshaping humanity's future. Its transformative potential to revolutionize industries, address global challenges, and augment human capabilities holds great promise. However, realizing this potential requires a concerted effort from policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to navigate the ethical challenges, foster collaboration, and ensure AI benefits humanity equitably. As we embark on this AI-driven journey, responsible development, and the pursuit of innovation in alignment with human values will lead us to a future where AI enhances human life, enriches society, and promotes a more sustainable and equitable world.
