Boozy "culture clash" romcom has innuendo, implied sex.

Parents need to know that Stars Fell on Alabama is a "culture clash" romcom about a Hollywood agent named Bryce ( James Maslow of Big Time Rush fame) who goes back home to Alabama. He is portrayed as someone who "got out" of his small town and is living what seems like a glamorous life; when he decides to go home, he quickly feels the squeeze of old pressures and the need to be impressive. This leads to some mixed messages. Viewers are meant to take away the idea that your friends will like you for who you are, not who you're dating -- but Bryce doesn't experience any negative consequences when he lies to people and they inevitably discover it. Casual infidelity is a recurring situation: Bryce's colleague brags about cheating on his wife and is seen carousing with women. That's supposed to be problematic, but later Bryce is also seen as an active and interested participant in cheating. There's also some innuendo, and scenes show both Bryce's bare chest and female lead Madison Bell's ( Ciara Hanna ) lingerie-clad tush. While there's no profanity or violence, drinking is portrayed not just as normal but as aspirational. Characters drink in most scenes, and chugging beers and throwing back shots is shown as making a woman more attractive. People also laugh about one of the characters growing marijuana at work.

Sex, Romance & Nudity
Romantic storyline. Passionate kissing. A couple kisses at night; film then cuts to them waking up in bed together wearing only underwear (sex clearly implied). Sexual innuendo. Suggestion that someone's physical appearance is what makes them appealing, with one character continually commenting on how "fit" a man is, letting him know she is also "fit," then coming on to him. Characters "skinny dip" in underwear; both male and female leads get praise about their bodies, and the woman is shot in a "sexy" light. Long scene with shirtless man walking around a room; it's clearly intended to portray his muscular build as physically appealing.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking
Drinking is glamorized, normalized, celebrated. Booze flows to show Hollywood players at a movie premiere. Ample positive discussion about drinking, buckets of booze are brought out in social situations, a woman is seen as desirable because she challenges a man to a drinking competition, and song lyrics present drinking in a positive light. Story told about someone growing marijuana at a home improvement store as a joke (there are consequences).
Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Drinking, Drugs & Smoking in your kid's entertainment guide.
Violence & Scariness
Intentionally rough tackle during a flag football game (it's implied that the man being hit deserves it).
Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Violence & Scariness in your kid's entertainment guide.
Products & Purchases
To portray Bryce's life as a Hollywood player, movie shows him partying in a limousine, repeatedly offering to pick up everyone's tab, mentioning that he has two Ferraris.
Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Language in your kid's entertainment guide.
Positive Messages
Intended messages are about being honest about who you are, that there's no need to try to impress your old friends. Shows lasting power of friendship. Suggests that good friends always have your back. But hero sets up an elaborate lie and uses it to find love, never losing admiration of his community. And frequent comments about "fitness" related to attraction suggest that someone's physical appearance is what makes them appealing.
Positive Role Models
While main character is adamant about maintaining professional boundaries, the film declares that "Rules are made to be broken," and he ends up getting romantic with a client. He also kisses a married woman and is remorseful only about getting caught. He sets up an elaborate lie, with no significant negative consequence. A woman joins an all-male football team, shows that she's a force to be reckoned with. Two supporting characters of color are included in mostly White cast; both are portrayed positively.

Stars rose on Alabama
Good for the whole family, what's the story.
In STARS FELL ON ALABAMA, Hollywood talent agent Bryce Dixon ( James Maslow ) is returning to his small hometown in Alabama to attend his high school reunion. Facing former classmates who equate marriage and kids with success, he convinces his movie starlet client, Madison Bell ( Ciara Hanna ), to come along and pretend to be his girlfriend.
Is It Any Good?
For romcom fans, this might feel like a knockoff; you may have to remind yourself that it's not Sweet Home Alabama , that Hanna isn't Kate Hudson, and that Maslow isn't Adam Levine. It all looks familiar, but it's not nearly as good as stalwarts of the genre. That said, it's not awful, either. And for some teens, it may feel like an evolution of their childhood, since Hanna and Maslow are both former Nickelodeon stars (she used to be the Yellow Power Ranger, and he was the face of Big Time Rush ). Now they're are all grown up, and while the idea of attending a 15-year high school reunion may not be totally relatable to kids, the content of the story mostly feels like the stuff of Nick at Nite. The language is clean, there's no real violence, and even the innuendo is fairly scrubbed. Heck, when everyone sneaks out to skinny dip, most of the underwear seen looks like swimsuits (in fact, one woman somehow does have on a swimsuit -- we can only assume she knew where the evening would end up?).
Nothing is especially original here, but sometimes, a tried-and-true formula works just fine. And for a new generation of romantic comedy viewers, "same old, same old" can feel new. Line dancing scenes have been around since Footloose , but Stars Fell on Alabama 's all-country soundtrack is likely to be appreciated by many viewers (though kids may not recognize American Idol 2006 winner Taylor Hicks covering the All-American Rejects' 2008 single "Gives You Hell"). The movie feels targeted at the oldest members of Gen Z and the youngest millennials, but with characters who are familiar high school types, there's just enough here to entertain, whether you live in an urban high-rise or a rural farmhouse.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how drinking is portrayed in the film. Is it glamorized , normalized, or shown to have consequences ? How can entertainment media influence our attitudes about things like drinking and substance use?
How does Stars Fell on Alabama depict the differences between big city and small town life? Why are culture clashes a popular scenario for filmmakers to explore? Is telling stories set in less-represented states a form of positive representation?
What would you say is this film's message? Can a movie's message still have impact if a main character succeeds by defying the positive "moral of the story"?

Oh, the big-shot-comes-home-to-a-small-town rom-com; a staple of the genre, particularly when it comes to the lower-tier romantic comedies we’re used to seeing flood the Hallmark Channel every holiday season. Stars Fell on Alabama , now streaming on Hulu, puts its own spin on the premise by throwing a Hollywood agent together with his star actress client and sending them to his 15-year high school reunion in Alabama.
STARS FELL ON ALABAMA : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
The Gist: Bryce (James Maslow) is a successful Hollywood agent. When we first meet him, he’s setting up quite the scene (literally) with his client Madison Belle (Ciara Hanna), an actress he is pushing hard to be the lead of a studio’s summer tentpole. Despite a stunt including pretend young fans and a green screen, the studio needs the weekend to think about it, and the two go on their merry way. While drunk at a premiere later that night, Bryce – who is very adamant about keeping things professional with his clients – accidentally lies that he’s dating Madison to some old high school friends over FaceTime. With Bryce heading home for his 15-year high school reunion tomorrow, he’s backed into a corner; he asks Madison (who is trying to avoid some drama of her own) nicely to accompany him back to Alabama, and she agrees.
Alabama inevitably brings the two closer together, even if they are lying to all the people Bryce (affectionately nicknamed “Dixie”) grew up with. With the paparazzi snooping, small town drama brewing, and a big movie deal in the mix, Bryce and Madison’s burgeoning romance may have more than a few obstacles to face.
What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Stars Fell on Alabama is basically like if the Hallmark big shot-goes-home-to-a-small-town Christmas movies had a baby with Sweet Home Alabama .
Performance Worth Watching: Ciara Hanna is genuinely good as movie star Madison Belle; she seems totally at ease on camera, grounding some of the film’s more silly and cliché moments. She’s charming in all the ways the leading lady of this kind of rom-com should be. (Hanna also looks like the lovechild of Blake Lively and a Parent Trap -era Elaine Hendrix, which is an added bonus.)
Memorable Dialogue: Most of the dialogue in Stars Fell on Alabama is pretty cringeworthy, but I chuckled at the title of the Facebook invite for Bryce’s 15-year reunion: “Join us as we welcome successful Hollywood agent Bryce Dixon and his surprise famous girlfriend!”
Sex and Skin: There’s some swimming in undies and some very tasteful making out (and implied sex) that cuts to the morning after, but not much else.
Our Take: Stars Fell on Alabama kicks off with a song that includes the lyrics “I’m goin’ to California, gonna live the life, sippin’ on tequila night after night” as a montage of Hollywood landmarks flashes on the screen. And that pretty much (unfortunately) sets the scene for the rest of the film. I am all for a good culture clash, big shot-returns-home-to-small-town mid-tier rom-com, but Stars Fell on Alabama is really all over the place. This isn’t to say that your mom (or mine, who watches Hallmark Christmas rom-coms religiously every year) won’t enjoy it, but for the casual genre lover or super-fan, it’s unlikely that Stars Fell on Alabama will check many boxes.
I’ll admit I was tickled by the Hollywood caricatures – the sleazy dude who asks “take her to dinner and a breakfast yet?” was truly ridiculous – as well as the Southern townies who (mostly) welcome Bryce back with open arms. And that mayor with major youth pastor energy! There are truly some characters in this one. But Stars Fell on Alabama tries so hard to juggle so many things (why the unnecessary musician boyfriend?) that it loses sight of the sweet – if familiar – romance scenario at its center. It’s a shame, too, because the leads are genuinely likable, and who doesn’t love a line dance set to a country rendition of The All-American Rejects’ “Gives You Hell” sung by Taylor Hicks?! But alas.
Stars Fell on Alabama culminates with a truly terrible rendition of its titular song, and I can’t think of a more appropriate way to sum it all up. You’re better off going with Sweet Home Alabama or revisiting some Nicholas Sparks favorites this time around.
Our Call: SKIP IT. Overlong, overplayed, and underwhelming, Stars Fell on Alabama isn’t worth the spot in your queue – despite its likable cast and positive vibes.

Movie Review: Stars Fell on Alabama (2021)

The romantic comedy is my favorite genre, and because I have watched so many, I have developed quite a discerning eye for what’s good or bad in the rom-com world. So where does director V.W. Scheich’s Stars Fell on Alabama fall? Well, it’s not an absolute train wreck, but it’s not exactly good either. James Maslow (“Love Exclusively”) is Bryce Dixon, a Hollywood agent who returns home to Alabama for his high school reunion. His friends corner him about his date, which compels him to lie that he will be bringing Madison Belle (Ciara Hanna, “The Call”), who is actually one of his clients. Bryce has a thing for Madison, but has never done anything about it because he’s so professional. He’s also a workaholic.
The friends are excited and unable to keep secrets, and news of this spreads quickly, which prompts Bryce to ask Madison to do him a favor and come home with him, and pretend that they’re dating. Madison is initially reluctant, until she realizes that she needs the escape from her on again/off again boyfriend Zane Thomas (Zebedee Row, “Ghost in the Graveyard”), so off they go to Alabama. The pair basically do everything that you would stereotypically associate with the setting — indulge in barbecue ribs and fried food, participate in line dancing, and play a friendly game of flag football.
Of these clichéd scenarios, I enjoyed the line dancing segment somewhat, since everyone was grooving to Taylor Hicks performing “Gives You Hell.” I had always wondered what happened to that guy after he won American Idol, and now I know — he’s in this movie. The rest of Stars Fell on Alabama crawls by, with none of the charm that is necessary for this romancer to tread water. Maslow and Hanna have no chemistry together. They are both very good looking, but their relationship is flat and unbelievable. Maslow’s Bryce has more of a connection with his high school ex-girlfriend Rachel (Lesa Wilson, “The Baby Proposal”) than his supposed love interest. It is strange, since Maslow has a funny bone, as those of us would know if we grew up listening to “Big Time Rush” and watching the series on Nickelodeon, but it isn’t really on display here.
There are also running gags that are just not funny either, like Bryce being constantly pestered by his English teacher to read her script, or his inability to use “y’all” like every Alabamian. In this genre, it is standard to create obstacles for the main couple to overcome, but the impediments created here are not organic and so contrived. These obstacles should be a natural thing in the process of the relationship, not, as an example, the mayor’s wife trying to stir up trouble with a make-out session at a car park. And whenever there is a complication, the other person mopes for a few and soon thereafter gets over it without skipping a beat. Thus, when they do eventually get together (as is usually the case with a rom-com), it doesn’t feel earned.
At the end, I didn’t believe Bryce when he spoke about having roots in his hometown — the dude looked beyond happy to be leaving soon. Me? I was happy that the movie was over, so I could move on from the hour-and-a-half I spent on this that I would never get back. The soundtrack was good though; lots of country music from indie groups to aurally entertain. Otherwise, there weren’t many stars in Stars Fell on Alabama for me to be dazzled by.

Stars Fell on Alabama
By Sabina Dana Plasse | January 8, 2021
There’s nothing like a high school reunion to make you revisit your bucket list and notice that there’s an unchecked box to get married and have kids. Stars Fell on Alabama is the quintessential rom-com plot of bringing your movie star client to your high school reunion because you need a date or else be ridiculed by classmates from 15 years ago. Successful Hollywood agent, Bryce Dixon (James Maslow), and his client, a starlet on the verge of making it big, Madison Belle ( Ciara Hanna ), immediately connect on the farcical weekend, as just friends but realize they have chemistry because “your heart knows things that your mind can’t explain.”
Although the film is supposed to be set in Alabama, it mainly takes place in Beaufort, South Carolina, which with its Palmetto trees lining its iconic Bay Street, works just fine as a background for a couple to fall in love and cause a bit of trouble. Bryce, also known as “Dixie,” is very tight with his high school friends even though he has not returned home in over a decade. As southerners do, he is chastised for his lack of southern protocol. However, Madison comes to his rescue and plays her part, as she is an actress bursting on the scene, but secretly desires the role she is playing. Bryce gives Madison the Alabama code of “God, country, and football,” but not necessarily in that order, to start off their weekend in Willow Valley.
“ Bryce…is chastised for his lack of southern protocol. However, Madison comes to his rescue …”
Driving a monster red pick-up truck, drinking, line dancing, and breaking into the high school’s pool at midnight ensue, along with naughty kisses, bad pranks, and a pet tortoise named Bear—is this a thing, now? As the couple gets to know each other, in comes Zane (Zebedee Row), Madison’s rock star ex-boyfriend, to push the pressure up a notch, making his intentions clear that he is not letting go of her. By the by, all of this is played out on a football field. At the big moment, the reunion night where Bryce and Madison are dressed to the nines, Zane not only pulls Madison up on stage to sing “Stars Fell on Alabama,” he also proposes to her, leaving Bryce no choice but to come clean in public. There, on stage with his big confession followed by a big Hollywood kiss with Madison, Bryce fulfills his bucket list.
Stars Fell on Alabama is a feel-good movie with a familiar plot with some seemingly awkward characters, although not all that impressionable. There are some interesting split screens and screen wipes that occur throughout to pass the time, especially in the drinking sequences, which give it an odd, indie feel for a split-second. There’s also a moody moment or two on Main Street where Madison is having a personal, emotional bout because of her dueling boyfriends, which Hanna plays well. She is likable. Expect all the wackiness of a small-town high school reunion, within reason, and a bit of southern coy, which could have used a pinch more of evil, in Stars Fell on Alabama and enjoy its country music soundtrack and the nostalgia for the song “Stars Fell on Alabama,” which is about a spectacular meteor shower seen in the skies of Alabama in 1833.
