A consistent entry-level curriculum across shops and schools will enable a smoother transition to the workforce, bolstering both onboarding and retention efforts
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. , Aug. 27, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- I-CAR , the leading provider of automotive collision repair industry education and credentialing, technical information and services, and talent crisis solutions, today announced that its innovative new I-CAR Academy Program is now available to collision repair facilities, after launching for schools earlier this year . The I-CAR Academy program is a revolutionary entry-level collision repair curriculum, and the first industry-neutral, comprehensive early career program to educate and recognize new technicians and the schools and repair centers that train these new industry entrants.
I-CAR Academy was specifically designed to kickstart a technician's education journey when they start their career in a collision repair shop. The program provides a solid foundation for the I-CAR Professional Level curriculum and ultimately Platinum Technician recognition, as well as a solid base for OEM and supplier training. I-CAR Academy's launch in shops marks the first time a consistent entry-level curriculum is available to both schools and repair facilities, enabling a smoother transition to the workforce. The I-CAR Academy program for shops differs from the school version by offering additional training and best practices for shop leadership on creating a differentiated culture and delivering effective mentoring, which is key to technician development, progression and retention.
"As our industry continues navigating through the talent crisis, I-CAR Academy offers an industry-wide solution at the most critical time in a technician's career: the beginning," said I-CAR President and CEO John Van Alstyne . "Our industry is in dire need of technicians. For some the right starting point is a school, while others excel beginning their career in a shop. Regardless of where a technician enters the industry, they can count on I-CAR Academy to give them a solid and relevant foundation from which to build their future."
I-CAR Academy's curriculum provides collision repair fundamentals such as safety and tool skills, and foundational knowledge for shop roles including estimator/repair planning, non-structural repairs, structural repairs, and refinishing, and includes resources addressing critical cultural areas such as selecting and training a mentor, mentorship guides, and tools to create an employment brand for use in recruitment.
Five learning areas are available now: Collision Repair Fundamentals; Disassembly and Reassembly; Plastic Repair; Aluminum and Steel Small Dent Removal; and Preparation for Refinishing. A badging system recognizes progress and offers the industry a consistent language with which technicians can communicate and demonstrate their readiness to begin performing real work in each skill area.
I-CAR Academy caters to the diverse learning styles of new technicians with a modern, engaging learning experience that combines interactive online modules, hands-on skills training, and gamified learning. Interactive online modules deliver essential knowledge in a consumable format, allowing for flexible learning, while linked hands-on training hones practical repair skills through real-world exercises that solidify understanding.
"We expect that the collision repair facilities that implement I-CAR Academy will experience a range of benefits, including producing confident new technicians who possess a solid foundation in collision repair fundamentals, allowing them to contribute meaningfully from day one," said Dara Goroff , I-CAR Vice President of Planning and Industry Talent Programming. "Research has shown that disengagement in the early onboarding and training process, and lack of clarity about career path leads to significant turnover. I-CAR Academy is accessible, easy to implement in a shop, and will reduce onboarding time, resulting in increased productivity, longer employee retention, and a high level of employee satisfaction."
Added Van Alstyne , "We expect that the collision repair facilities who make the commitment to training and developing the next generation of technicians will see the return on their investment in their locations, reaping the benefits of helping to create a more productive, stable, and engaged workforce, which in turn strengthens the public view of our industry."
Since launching its initiative focused on talent attraction, development, and retention solutions, I-CAR has continuously made demonstrable progress on behalf of the industry. The organization has delivered Collision Careers, an industry-focused talent attraction platform, and has now implemented I-CAR Academy programs for shops and schools in time for the 2024-2025 academic year.

GCSE results day 2024: Everything you need to know including the number grading system
Thousands of students across the country will soon be finding out their GCSE results and thinking about the next steps in their education.
Here we explain everything you need to know about the big day, from when results day is, to the current 9-1 grading scale, to what your options are if your results aren’t what you’re expecting.
When is GCSE results day 2024?
GCSE results day will be taking place on Thursday the 22 August.
The results will be made available to schools on Wednesday and available to pick up from your school by 8am on Thursday morning.
Schools will issue their own instructions on how and when to collect your results.
When did we change to a number grading scale?
The shift to the numerical grading system was introduced in England in 2017 firstly in English language, English literature, and maths.
By 2020 all subjects were shifted to number grades. This means anyone with GCSE results from 2017-2020 will have a combination of both letters and numbers.
The numerical grading system was to signal more challenging GCSEs and to better differentiate between students’ abilities - particularly at higher grades between the A *-C grades. There only used to be 4 grades between A* and C, now with the numerical grading scale there are 6.
What do the number grades mean?
The grades are ranked from 1, the lowest, to 9, the highest.
The grades don’t exactly translate, but the two grading scales meet at three points as illustrated below.
The bottom of grade 7 is aligned with the bottom of grade A, while the bottom of grade 4 is aligned to the bottom of grade C.
Meanwhile, the bottom of grade 1 is aligned to the bottom of grade G.
What to do if your results weren’t what you were expecting?
If your results weren’t what you were expecting, firstly don’t panic. You have options.
First things first, speak to your school or college – they could be flexible on entry requirements if you’ve just missed your grades.
They’ll also be able to give you the best tailored advice on whether re-sitting while studying for your next qualifications is a possibility.
If you’re really unhappy with your results you can enter to resit all GCSE subjects in summer 2025. You can also take autumn exams in GCSE English language and maths.
Speak to your sixth form or college to decide when it’s the best time for you to resit a GCSE exam.
Look for other courses with different grade requirements
Entry requirements vary depending on the college and course. Ask your school for advice, and call your college or another one in your area to see if there’s a space on a course you’re interested in.
Consider an apprenticeship
Apprenticeships combine a practical training job with study too. They’re open to you if you’re 16 or over, living in England, and not in full time education.
As an apprentice you’ll be a paid employee, have the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, and get time set aside for training and study related to your role.
You can find out more about how to apply here .
Talk to a National Careers Service (NCS) adviser
The National Career Service is a free resource that can help you with your career planning. Give them a call to discuss potential routes into higher education, further education, or the workplace.
Whatever your results, if you want to find out more about all your education and training options, as well as get practical advice about your exam results, visit the National Careers Service page and Skills for Careers to explore your study and work choices.

About the SWCTE
Career and Technical Education (CTE) is the practice of teaching specific career skills to students in middle school, high school, and post-secondary institutions. Students build highly specific and highly versatile essential skills. The Academy will reinvent career and technical education as it evolves from a vocational school model to one that ladders secondary education to higher education; builds careers in skilled trades, technology and applied sciences and meets the demands for “up skilling” of today’s workforce. Critical for developing and expanding workforce opportunities, the Academy will prepare students in Dickinson and surrounding school districts as they get ready to enter the workforce. Students will benefit from education and training opportunities offered through Dickinson State University’s laddered early entry Dual Mission Program.
Programs of study will parallel ND CTE Program Areas or Career Clusters.
They include:
- Agriculture
- Food & Natural Resources
- Architecture & Construction
- Arts, A/V Technology & Communications
- Business Management & Administration
- Education & Training
- Government & Public Administration
- Health Sciences
- Hospitality & Tourism
- Human Services
- Information Technology
- Public Safety
- Corrections & Security
- Manufacturing
- Marketing; Science
- Engineering & Mathematics; and Transportation
- Distribution & Logistics
Some courses are currently offered through Dickinson Public School’s CTE program, by Dickinson State University as an early entry dual credit course or by Roughrider Area Career and Tech Center as a partner program at Dickinson High School and by other schools in the region. The Academy will not duplicate existing programs offered in the region but will instead build upon them where needed.
SWCTE Governing Board
The Academy Governance Board consists of six (6) directors composed of the following representative entities: Dickinson Public School District (2 directors), Killdeer Public School District (1 director), South Heart Public School District (1 director), New England Public School District (1 director), Belfield Public School District (1 director) and Trinity Catholic School System (ex-officio). The Academy Advisory Board will be formed to consist of members representing Roughrider Area Career and Technology Center, Dickinson State University, Trinity Catholic Schools, members from Business and Industry which may include economic development representatives and political subdivision representatives.

Academies: School Within a School
Dave Hackett is a master of illusion. The juniors in his science class at the Manufacturing Production Technology Academy (MPTA) of Laguna Creek High School, in Elk Grove, California, are too busy launching and chasing the rockets they made in class to notice they're actually learning physics. Hackett's class is part of a high school innovation movement known as career academies. They're small schools, located within larger comprehensive high schools, and they integrate academics with technical know-how in an occupation or industry that has important ties to the local region: renewable energy, health and science, agriculture, or, in the case of MPTA, computer-aided design and manufacturing.
Outside, on a patch of grass separating the baseball and football fields, students take turns blasting their single-engine rockets into the sky while their classmates chase after them like fly balls. Back in the classroom, Hackett draws a diagram and equations on the interactive whiteboard and has his students compute height, acceleration, and velocity.
With the exception of some electives and Advanced Placement courses, academy students move together from class to class. Dedicated academy teachers, like Hackett, coordinate the curriculum so all subjects, from math and science to English and history, advance the design and manufacturing theme.
Hackett says half the MPTA students are considered at-risk, and he suspects most wouldn't even take physics were it not for the academy. And yet, he notes, "They have better attendance and better grades, and they are more engaged."
One of the school’s other academies isn’t showing as impressive results. The Green Energy Technology Academy (GETA) is in its first year of full enrollment through all four years, grades 9 through 12. If MPTA, which has been around for 15 years, is any indicator, GETA should enjoy improved results in the years to come. Young as it is, GETA already has strong industry support and recently received a $10,000 grant from Pacific Gas and Electric to build portable solar generators.
In some states, career academies go by the name multiple pathways. The organization ConnectEd: The California Center for College and Career , created by the James Irvine Foundation (which also funded this installment of Schools That Work), along with other groups, adopted the term Linked Learning to emphasize the connection between academics and career skills. The California Department of Education funds an approach to career and technical education that embodies many components of Linked Learning called California Partnership Academies .
Most career academies share four guiding principles and four components.
Principles:
- The academies prepare students for college and career, including careers after high school: Students should possess the academic and technical abilities to succeed in college, apprenticeships, community college certification programs, and some skilled jobs.
- They create an engaging curriculum: Students apply academics to real-world issues and situations through project-based learning, internships, and job shadowing.
- They place value on life skills: Teaching students to work collaboratively, think critically, and solve problems is as important as teaching them academic knowledge.
- They improve student achievement and provide equal access: Although there may be waiting lists for academies, admission should be open to all students within the district, regardless of their academic ability.
Components:
- Multiyear courses: The career technical curriculum should include at least three or four yearlong courses that are infused into the core academics.
- Project-based learning: This gives students the chance to apply what they've learned to a real-world problem, which helps make school relevant.
- Community partnerships: Academies need the support and participation of local businesses and industries for funding and resources and for opportunities for job shadowing, internships, and mentorships.
- Support: With so many at-risk students, academies must have a strong network of support services to help students master the academic and career content.

The Governor's Career and Technical Education (CTE) Academy for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)
Academy Goals and Description: The Governor’s Career and Technical Education Academy for STEM in Richmond ( a.k.a."GSA" ) offers Richmond Public School students a rigorous academic and technical program of study in two career pathways (Engineering and Technology and Therapeutic Services). Courses emphasize in-depth understanding, connect new ideas to prior knowledge, encourage exploration, and help students construct meaning from course content.
The pathways are a combination of academic and technical study that integrates classroom and real-world learning. Hands-on project-based instruction is used in middle, summer and high school program components. Academy coursework, teacher professional development, academic support, career and college development activities, along with parent and community involvement create a STEM community of learners.
The Academy raises student aspirations and attracts more students to postsecondary education in preparation for technical careers, especially targeting students who might otherwise have settled for a curriculum that did not prepare them well for postsecondary education or work.
GSA Information Slides
Highlights of the academy:.
- Students attend the STEM Academy part-time over the course of four years and receive at least two elective credits per year which meet high school graduation requirements.
- The STEM Academy prepares students for a full range of post-secondary opportunities (two- and four-year colleges), formal employment training, apprenticeships, the military, and high-skill, high-wage, high-demand employment.
- Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum is integrated into the Academy’s Engineering and Technology program of studies. PLTW empowers students to develop and apply in-demand, transportable skills by exploring real-world challenges. Through our pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, students not only learn technical skills, but also learn to solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate, and collaborate. We also provide teachers with the training, resources, and support they need to engage students in real-world learning.
- The Therapeutic Services pathway provides instruction that focuses on Emergency Medical Services, Sports Medicine, Biomedical Sciences and Human Body Systems . Additional health related pathways will be considered for development and expansion of the Academy.
- Dual Enrollment credits are available for students who qualify for college admission.

technical education

technical education , the academic and vocational preparation of students for jobs involving applied science and modern technology. It emphasizes the understanding and practical application of basic principles of science and mathematics, rather than the attainment of proficiency in manual skills that is properly the concern of vocational education . Technical education has as its objectives the preparation of graduates for occupations that are classed above the skilled crafts but below the scientific or engineering professions. People so employed are frequently called technicians. Technical education is distinct from professional education , which places major emphasis upon the theories, understanding, and principles of a wide body of subject matter designed to equip the graduate to practice authoritatively in such fields as science, engineering, law, or medicine. Technical occupations are vital in a wide range of fields, including agriculture, business administration, computers and data processing , education, environmental and resource management, graphic arts and industrial design , and health and medicine; technical educational curricula are correspondingly specialized over a broad range. Technical education is typically offered in post-high-school curricula that are two years in length, are not designed to lead to a bachelor’s degree , and are offered in a wide variety of institutions, such as technical institutes, junior colleges, vocational schools, and regular colleges and universities.
