Counseling Psychology, Ph.D.: Program Admissions

The Counseling Psychology Program at the University of Maryland is a joint program between the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education and the Department of Psychology. Our Counseling Psychology Program has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1953. In ratings evaluating Counseling Psychology over the past three decades, the University of Maryland is always among the very top ranked programs in the United States. Our faculty represent a broad range of research interests, including psychotherapy process and outcome research, multicultural psychology, vocational psychology, and interpersonal relationships.

The Counseling Psychology Program is designed to prepare students for academic, research, and practice careers at the doctoral level. The program is based on the scientist-practitioner model, which emphasizes the value of concurrent training in research, practice, and their integration. Consistent with this model, we strive to create a positive environment that trains students broadly in general psychology as a behavioral science, and enables students to become competent in conducting research and providing counseling. Our curriculum is designed to help students experience firsthand how these various activities can inform and enhance one another. Students receive rigorous training through a variety of educational modalities, including (a) general psychology courses, (b) small counseling psychology seminars, (c) research, and (d) applied counseling experiences with intensive personalized supervision.

The training program prepares our students for a diversity of career paths. A survey indicated that our recent graduates hold a wide variety of positions, the most common being staff psychologists in university counseling centers and tenure-track faculty members in universities. Graduates of the program are eligible for certification and licensing examinations as psychologists.

Per new US Department of Education regulations regarding state licensure disclosure, a determination has not been made as to whether this program meets the requirements for professional certification in any particular state or territory other than Maryland. We are in the process of reviewing state certification requirements and will update this page when more information is available.

Please explore the links under “Our Training Program” below to learn more about our training program, including our approach to training in research and practice, curriculum, geographic location, commitment to multiculturalism, and our history. https://counselingpsychologyumd.weebly.com/training-program.html

About the course

Clinical Psychology at the University of Maryland has been accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1963. The program emphasizes the integration of research and clinical practice and follows the Clinical Scientist training model. In line with this training model, the program is a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science. The program prepares clinical psychologists who are well versed in the scientific method of inquiry and skilled in the development, implementation, and dissemination of empirically supported treatments to remediate psychological dysfunction. We are pleased to announce that the The Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program is now also accredited by the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), an organization whose aim is to provide rigorous, objective, and empirically based accreditation of Ph.D. programs that adhere to a clinical science training model -- one that increases the quality and quantity of clinical scientists contributing to all aspects of public health and extends the science base for mental health care.

Clinical Psychology, Ph.D.

The clinical psychology doctoral program blends the clinical-scientist model and the scientist-practitioner model. It integrates the full range of research, teaching and applied skills in training doctoral students.

We view research and applied skills as interwoven rather than as two discrete sets of skills. As a result, you will acquire the foundation for pursuing a(n):

  • Clinical scientist career in an academic or research setting
  • Scientist-practitioner career in a medical or other training institution
  • Administrative role in a service delivery agency

Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology Program Requirements

Steps to Fulfill a Doctoral Program

Research Focus

In this program, students are involved in faculty-led research teams beginning in their first year. This affords them the opportunity to collaborate with team members in:

  • Developing research questions
  • Designing empirical studies
  • Collecting and analyzing data
  • Writing manuscripts
  • Presenting scientific papers at national and regional conferences

The clinical program emphasizes student involvement in collaborative research beyond their thesis research. This provides a broad foundation in research methodology prior to formulating their dissertation research. We expect our students to have several scholarly publications and presentations at scientific meetings prior to graduation.

To support their development as clinical scientists, students complete courses in:

  • Research methodology
  • Scientific domains of psychological inquiry
  • Core clinical courses in psychopathology, assessment and psychosocial interventions

You'll also take a diversity-focused course.

Topics of multiculturalism and diversity, as well as other profession-wide competencies, are infused throughout the program from coursework to colloquia and research team experiences.

Clinical Experience

Students begin to acquire clinical skills in assessment and intervention in their second year. All students serve as therapists, serving children, adolescents, and adults from the community (as individuals, couples, or families) under close faculty supervision. Advanced students may:

  • Specialize in certain types of cases (e.g., eating disorders, chronic pain, substance abuse, attention-deficit disorders, or relationship problems)
  • Provide peer supervision
  • Gain exposure to a range of therapeutic approaches (e.g., CBT, DBT, ACT, among others),
  • Involve themselves in one of the ongoing specialty training/research programs at the clinic, gaining intensive experience with a particular problem while participating in the design, conduct, and evaluation of a research project

The final year of the program is a clinical internship in which students typically match to a program at a different institution or clinic. This program provides immersive clinical experience and the opportunity to learn new approaches to clinical work and research.
