A young Adivasi man who has never seen his reflection in a mirror swaps his bow and arrow for a sniper’s rifle in order to avenge the destruction of his tribe. If you believe this, you can believe anything that goes on in Aar Ya Paar .

The Disney+ Hotstar series gives the urgent issue of the exploitation of indigenous communities the fully filmy treatment. Designed as a battle between sinister suits and forest-dwellers dressed in brown sack-like costumes, the show even has Avatar -like moments – but without the visual effects.

Uranium has been discovered on land inhabited by an indigenous group. Ruthless industrialist Rueben (Ashish Vidyarthi) unleashes a reign of terror on the tribe. Sarju (Aditya Rawal), whose father is among the victims, swears revenge, becoming a contract killer for the fixer Pullappa (Dibyendu Bhattacharya). Pullappa’s strings are, in turn, being yanked by the gangster Wasim (Aasif Sheikh).

Rueben has at his disposal a blood-thirsty special forces unit. Rueben also manipulates the doctor Sanghamitra (Patralekha) into gaining the favour of Sarju and his people.

When matters gets out of hand, Sarju flees with the help of Pullappa and Sanghamitra. Sympathetic Central Bureau of Investigation officer Aditya (Sumeet Vyas) soon realises that Sarju isn’t the “Naxalite” he is made out to be, and that the real villain is someone else.

Aar Ya Paar has been created by Sidharth Sengupta, written by Sengupta, Avinash Singh and Vijay Narayan Verma, and directed by Glen Barettto, Ankush Mohla and Neel Guha. The show proves that an amped-up style oozing with Bollywood-style flourishes is singularly unsuited to exploring the sustained destruction of indigenous habitats, the ignorance and prejudice about Adivasis and the collusion between big industry and security forces.

The credibility crisis begins with the portrayal of the Adivasis as simple-minded jungle folk who have a herbal remedy for a sophisticated illness but otherwise shun medical treatment.

Sarju, who shudders when he sees himself in the mirror for the first time, masters modern technology in less time than it takes to say “Excuse me, what?” Sanghamitra, initially a willing shill for Rueben, is even less believable.

It’s well-meaning, of course, suffused with generalised sympathy for the crisis facing tribals and stacked with respectable actors. The one thing the show gets right is the cynicism and cruelty with which Adivasis are treated.

Ashish Vidyarthi is impressive as a venal businessman who delegates the carnage to his minions but isn’t above doing the dirty work himself. I have sacrificed a great deal just so that you may lecture me on morals, he tells his guilt-stricken son Goldie (Vaarun Bhagat).

The most memorable character is Pullappa, who trembles before Wasim’s henchmen and reserves his swagger for the highly impressionable Sarju. Pullappa brainwashes the naive Sarju by claiming to be an older version of the young Adivasi. I too have seen my tribe being destroyed, Pullappa frequently tells Sarju. Dibyendu Bhattacharya’s hugely enjoyable performance humanises this smooth-tongued trickster, who isn’t too different from Reuben in villainy.

As Sarju, Aditya Rawal glowers endlessly. Frequently described as a warrior, Rawal strains every sinew to play a character who has emerged out a zone somewhere between a comic book and a James Bond movie.

Aar Ya Paar Review: Aditya Rawal Does His Best To Carry The Weight Of The Story

Aar ya paar review: sumeet vyas, ashish vidyarthi and dibyendu bhattacharya hit the right notes for the most part. sadly, their collective presence in the cast fails to lend credence to the proceedings notwithstanding the flashes of emotion and drama strewn across the narrative..

An all-out war between two worlds - one of the people who draw sustenance from a forest, the other represented by those who want to take control of the protected zone - is at the core of Aar Ya Paar , an eight-episode series created by Sidharth Sengupta for Hotstar Specials. The larger purpose notwithstanding, it does not take the show very long to turn into a conventional tale of vendetta centred on a young tribal man out to avenge his father, killed in cold blood by a mercenary on the payroll of a ruthless industrialist.

The old man, the head of his tribe, dies in an attack on a medical camp organised in the heart of the jungle for a protected and isolated community that has for generations kept the outside world at bay. A powerful industrial group wants the tribals out of the forest so that it can move in and mine the land for weapons-grade uranium and make huge profits.

Based on a story idea by Mohinder Pratap Singh and scripted by Avinash Singh, Vijay Narayan Verma and Sidharth Sengupta, Aar Ya Paar may seem like a series that has its heart in the right place. It is the mind that leads it astray and prevents it from taking the shape of a convincing and genuinely engaging tale of an age-old conflict between those that own the forests and those that covet them and have the political and financial means to grab them.

Aar Ya Paar , directed by Glen Barretto, Ankush Mohla and Neel Guha, does not mine the larger conflict points quite as much as it focuses on an individual's quest for vengeance. The brooding young protagonist is an exceptionally skilled archer who never misses a target with his bow and arrow, but the story of his valiant exploits never quite hits the mark.

The series hinges on the obvious. It depicts how modern notions of development and wealth creation are at odds with the traditional world of the tribals, where life moves at its own, unhurried pace, where peace and harmony reign.

Trouble erupts for the forest dwellers when an engineer stumbles upon a rock with traces of uranium. His employer, avaricious industrialist Reuben Bhatta (Ashish Vidyarthi), resolves to wrest control of the forest land forthwith.

When a pernicious attempt to evict the tribals from their habitat fails, Bhatta conspires to draw them out of their protected zone on the pretext of a free medical camp organised with the help of an unsuspecting activist-doctor, Sanghamitra (Patralekha Paul). A violent raid on the tribals leaves a large number of innocents, including the chieftain, dead. The headman's son Sarju (Aditya Rawal) flees to avoid being eliminated.

In a city somewhere in central India, Sarju meets a contract killer, Pullappa (Dibyendu Bhattacharya), who works for a criminal gang as well as for an archery coach looking for fresh talent from among uprooted, unemployed young tribals.

The scout, himself a displaced tribal, takes Sarju to the sports academy where the newbie instantly impresses everyone around him. But it isn't medals that Pullappa wants Sarju to win. He plans to use the youngster as a hitman.

Reuben Bhatta, beset by a major medical problem, is worried that his days are numbered. But the delicate state of his health does not dampen his obsession with profits. The man is ruthless not only with his foes but also with his own men if and when they fail to deliver what he wants.

Pullappa, too, has his share of life and death questions to deal with. The principal one pertains to his vulnerable wife and child. He is on the run because several of his recent contract killing jobs haven't proven successful. The gangster he serves is determined to make him pay if he does not succeed in eliminating a man who launders money for politicians and businessmen and is on his way to Delhi to spill the beans. Pullappa ropes in Sarju, whose instincts come in handy.

Aar Ya Paar isn't interested in exploring the plight of the tribal community that Sarju is a part of. The forest dwellers and their poisoned river are not what the spotlight is on. The series follows Sarju's single-minded efforts to punish the men responsible for his father's death.

In pursuit of his mission, Sarju has to deal with a special crimes cell officer Aditya Dutt (Sumeet Vyas), who has a keen sense of what the tribals are up against. The lawman's brief is to free the region of crime but he isn't entirely sure how to go about his job.

A subordinate says to Aditya Dutt: " Yeh tribals saari duniya ko jangal samjhte hain (These tribals regard the whole world as a forest)." He retorts: Nahi, woh jangal ko apni duniya samajhte hai aur hum jangal ko apni jaagir . (No, they regard the jungle as their world and we treat the forest as our fiefdom)." Later on, the officer admits that in order to stop the tribals it would be necessary to understand their grievances and aspirations.

That is unusual coming from a cop who takes orders from politicians and is charged with wiping out crime in and around the fictional forest of Jagdalganj. Unfortunately, Aar Ya Paar does not create enough space for this crucial conversation to go too much further. As the season draws to a close, the action shifts to Azerbaijan and Georgia. The change of scenery does little to liven up the show.

Shot in and around Bastar, Aar Ya Paar rustles up a world in which geography, logic and reality are frequently given the short shrift. Stuck in its rather facile ways, it does not shoot straight enough even when it appears to have taken aim at the right quarries.

Lead actor Aditya Rawal is called upon to carry the weight of the story on his shoulders. He does his best, but the screenplay is unable to work its way out of its superficiality often enough to give the performer an opportunity to breathe some life into the character and the plot.

Patralekha Paul in the role of a doctor who sticks her neck out to defend the tribals delivers in the scenes that matter. If only there were more such moments, her performance might have acquired greater depth and range.

Sumeet Vyas, Ashish Vidyarthi and Dibyendu Bhattacharya hit the right notes for the most part. Sadly, their collective presence in the cast fails to lend credence to the proceedings notwithstanding the flashes of emotion and drama strewn across the narrative. Their performances stand out, the characters the play don't.

Aar Ya Paar is a show that misses the wood for the trees. Its promising building blocks do not therefore yield the expected edifice.

Introduction

Thrillers are a genre of movies which have been often left alone by Bollywood. Of the few that get made in this genre, only a handful really makes the cut. Ketan Mehta continuing on his penchant for trying his hand at all kinds of movies decided to make a thriller in the form of Aar Ya Paar .

Jackie Shroff is a spendthrift playboy which is a very dangerous combination for the bank balance. Sure enough, he tatters on the verge of bankruptcy. But lady luck shines on him as his bank where he works assigns him to handle the dealings of Kamal Sidhu (a millionaire brat of a lady).

Jackie puts all his playboyish charms to win the hearts of Kamal Sidhu and marries her. He thinks all his financial woes are now solved and he can go ahead and fool around with other girls. But he gets busted by his untrusting wife and it takes all his persuasive skills to save the marriage. Now he gets frustrated at being held at a leash by his wife and starts plotting against her.

He gets assistance from Kamal’s secretary, Deepa Sahi who seems to hate Kamal as much as he does and the only reason why she’s sticking is the money. Deepa reveals to Jackie that she has seen Kamal’s Will and if she dies Jackie will get most of the property and Deepa would also get a few amount for herself. But this would happen only if Kamal dies.

This sets Jackie scheming and he gets Kamal murdered. But then the reality comes out that in the Will all the property has been left to Deepa and he himself has only bones to chew on. To add to his woes, Paresh Rawal, an inspector and friend of Kamal suspects him to be behind the murder of Kamal and vows to get him behind the bars.

Critical Summary

Aar Ya Paar has a unique plot and lots of twists and turns required to make a thriller success. Ketan Mehta after trying out a romantic suspense movie in Maya Memsaab and an insipid dark comedy Oh Darling, Yeh hai India has dumped his favorite star Shahrukh Khan for Jackie Shroff .

The movie starts brightly and moves at a good pace, only broken in between by songs, good songs, but which act as speed breakers in the movie. The movie has great potential and some of the aspects of the story have come out real good, but there seems to be something amiss with the movie.

For one, there is an uneasy feel to the movie, probably because of a lackluster kind of background music. Next up, the performances barring Paresh Rawal and to some extent Deepa Sahi were pretty ordinary. For some time now Jackie Shroff has been relegated to the role of side-hero. Aar Ya Paar provided him with a great chance to get back to the main hero role, but he sort of fumbles with the role and there is an element of overacting with his enactment.

Kamal Sidhu is even poorer. In fact, she can’t utter a dialog in Hindi properly. She might have been doing the role of a spoilt brat, but she has to have better Hindi than that to star in a movie. Ketan Mehta again casts his wife Deepa Sahi in a central role. She does do her role quite competently without excelling. Paresh Rawal in his small cameo role gives a understated performance as a quietly confident inspector. He is one of the highlights of the movie.

Another major drawback in the movie is the number of characters with part roles and the story seems to deviate in these characters and gets back to the main story without a flow which is essential for movies of this genre.

The music of Viju Shah is another plus point to this movie. Most of the songs of the album made it to the top of the charts at the time of their release.

The album begins with Dil Diya Pyaar Kiya which is a nice dance number, then moves onto another hummable romantic number in Halle Halle . Next up, we have another romantic number in Man Chaha Sanam . The album is nicely rounded up with the title song Aar Ya Paar .

On the whole, the album is good without being excellent.

Meaning of the title

Aar Ya Paar in hindi means Either this side or that meaning that there is no middle road. So you have to make the call as to this or that, right or wrong, good or bad without a middle option being there.

Aar Ya Paar represents another thriller movie that could have been such a winner, but ends up a pretty wasted effort. The movie is watchable for its suspense elements and its climax, but you need to make up a mind to sit through the whole movie and to hear some of the worst Hindi spoken on a big screen!!

I would give this Ketan Mehta offering a three star rating.

Aar Ya Paar review: Only Aditya Rawal shines in this story with half-baked characters

In aar ya paar, the makers hit home and show the world as real as it can get. yet the series fails to keep you hooked and lacks the action and thrill it promised..

Disney+ Hotstar’s latest show, Aar Ya Paar , introduces us to two worlds. One, that of the Degohati tribe, who might not communicate in words the way we do but they speak the language of love, compassion, and unity. They might live in a forest but they live a life which is devoid of the evils which have consumed the other world. On the other hand, there is the urban world where people have a reach to all their desires yet they are in a constant chase for more. A world where greed, power, and politics are a bigger threat to society than illnesses and poverty. With Aar Ya Paar , creator Sidharth Sengupta draws parallels between the two and shows us what happens when they collide.

The pilot introduces us to Sarju (Aditya Rawal) as a contract assassin who has a formidable talent in archery, a skill he has honed for a rather sinister purpose: killing people. But Sarju is not the antagonist in this story. The well-dressed, sharp and a regular looking man is actually an underdog who hails from a protected tribe which has its home deep rooted in a forest – one that was exploited by powerful men and their weapons. Ashish Vidyarthi plays a well-connected businessman who wants to take over the tribals’ forest after it is found that its rocks contain uranium. In an attempt to achieve so, he tries all the flagrant ways off the Book of Unethical Practices without caring about the consequences or the lives of those directly affected.

Meanwhile, there is a subplot going on involving a man ((Dibyendu Bhattacharya) who runs a contract-killing business, with a verbal diarrhoea where he spews abuses and curses every second, who is on the lookout for a new assassin to support his business. Sarju just happens to be the right person at the right time. The first two episodes are painfully slow in trying to establish Sarju’s back story and his transformation.

But this is not where the writing is flawed. While there is enough distinction between the two polar worlds, it is in the treatment of its characters who inhabit these worlds which seems unexplored. Let’s begin with Sumeet Vyas, whose voiceover opens this story. Vyas is no stranger to the web-series realm. He has worked in several shows and played subdued characters in the past. But his latest as a Special Crimes Unit investigating officer is an interesting avatar that the actor’s intense eyes and sharp look seemed best suited for. But unfortunately, there is little meat to his character. Vyas comes off as a stiff, no-fun officer for whom the closest thing to companionship is a puppy he has just adopted. But there is no back story as to why his character has that mystery to him. He just comes and goes without leaving much to remember for the viewers.

Same is the case with Patralekhaa, who plays a nurse and a social activist. Despite such a promising cast of this calibre, the writers don’t give them enough space to breathe. Hopefully, there is more to their character arcs in the next season. 

But Rawal makes his case work. The actor certainly has large shoes to fill given the legacy of his father, Paresh Rawal. But Aar Ya Paar gives him that space to just be. His character of Sarju is left to explore an alienated world and his natural instincts help keep his footing the moment he steps on an unfamiliar territory. Much like his character, and despite being only a few films old, Rawal has ventured into the unknown with Aar Ya Paar,  which marks his web-series debut, and he certainly holds his ground as a promising actor. As for Ashish Vidyarthi, he does what he does best, play the devil’s hat.

The larger message that Sengupta highlights is that human greed can seep into anywhere. Sarju is not just fighting his clan’s killers but is also battling against a corrupt political machinery. In his attempt to right the wrong done to his tribe, he chooses the path of vengeance and ends up becoming a victim of the vicious cycle.

Disney+ Hostar has been on an experiment spree with its content and has delivered stories from a wide range of genres. We have entered the dark and complex world of Rudra , as well as a world blinded by superstition and faith in Dahan . In Aar Ya Paar, the makers hit home and show the world as real as it can get. Yet it fails to keep you hooked and lacks the action and thrill it promised. There are a few moments when the story gets compelling, funny even, but it is forgettable in the moments it is not trying to be either, which happens quite often in its story spread across seven episodes. Instead, what you get is a series which, much like its name, is neither aar ya paar.

The trailer for Disney+ Hotstar’s new Hotstar Specials, “Aar Ya Paar” in Tamil and Telugu, is out. It’s a gripping story about an underdog trying to save his tribe and survive in the modern world. The action-drama series, created by Sidharth Sengupta and produced by Jyoti Sagar and Sidharth Sengupta’s Edgestorm Ventures LLP, will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar in Hindi and dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada, Bengali, and Malayalam.

Aditya Rawal, Patralekha, Sumeet Vyas, Ashish Vidyarthi, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Aasif Sheikh, Shilpa Shukla, Varun Bhagat, Nakul Sehdev, and others star in the fast-paced action drama.

Sarju, played by Aditya Rawal, the protagonist and a tribal man with a formidable talent in archery, is the focus of the series. He is fighting for his tribe’s survival against the modern world, with its corrupt political and financial machinery, which catapults him into the world of big crime as he emerges as a deadly mercenary assassin.

Disney+ hotstar announces release of ‘aar ya paar’.

‘Aar Ya Paar’ is the latest original to be coming out from Disney+ Hotstar. Starring Patralekhaa, Ashish Vidyarthi , Aditya Rawal and Sumeet Vyas, this one will stream on the OTT platform in multiple languages, including Telugu, from December 30.

The web series tracks the story of a tribal populace whose natural habitat is threatened by greedy villains.

The show will stream in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali and Marathi. The makers said that the series is about a heroic man who can go to any extent to save the land and the people.

The visuals, the cinematography, the action sequences, and t he performances are expected to enthuse OTT viewers this New Year eve.

Aar Ya Paar review: Underwhelming series misses its mark while also searching for It

A bizarre narrative, masked as a globetrotting series, muddles tones, genres and even cultural histories.

There is a scene in Disney+Hotstar’s Aar Ya Paar , where a couple of police officers discuss the geopolitics of tribal people. “ Ye tribal log puri duniya ko jungle mante hain ,” one says, to which another responds, “ Duniya ko jungle nai, Jungle ko apni puri duniya maante hain ”. It’s a fairly simple exchange that effectively communicates two sides of a complicated debate. Unfortunately, it’s one of the few moments in this show that suggests it has intellect at par with its commitment to an age-old debate. Aar Ya Paar , created by the hit-and-miss Sidharth Sengupta, is a puzzling foray into India’s tribes, via some truly awful stereotyping, mildly interesting conflict and some extremely bizarre mis-en-scene. There is so much that’s awkward here, that a handful of decent performances struggle to balance the daft, almost offensive nature of all that might be, and is problematic.

Sarju, played by newcomer Aditya Rawal, is a warrior of the Degohaati (also the village) tribe located somewhere in middle India. Sarju and his tribe are gatherer-hunters still, but for some reason they continue to wear pre-historic clothing, hunt with bows and arrows and live lives cordoned off from civilisation, like it is a couple of centuries earlier. There are scant accounts of such tribes in India, in the present day context, but regardless of accuracy, this is a wretchedly romanticised portrait of a dying trope. Even Rajamouli ’s imagination of the Bhils in RRR (set somewhere in 1920s) feels progressive in comparison. Moreover, Sarju is the most uninteresting, straight-faced protagonist whose reticence suggests brain damage rather than mystique or reluctant gladiatorial artifice.

Ashish Vidyarthi plays the quizzically named Reuben Bhattaa, chief of Bhattaa Mining, a predictably greedy mining company that discovers that a precious mineral can be mined from the area inhabited by Sarju’s tribe. This is a classic clash between worlds, between two diametrically opposing views, and yet it feels far too restrained and subdued for its own good. Dibyendu Bhattacharya is thrown into the mixer as a local, foul-mouthed contractor and so is Sumeet Vyas, as the slightly read and marginally erudite police officer offered a ringside view. Vyas is decent, and Bhattacharya, is well, excellent as always. As a small-time contractor of ugly tasks, he soars in an otherwise tepid mix of forced conflict, ungainly creative choices and a bizarre plotline.

Sarju encounters the city, almost becomes an archery prodigy before turning to a life of crime. The awful representation of tribal people notwithstanding, even by the modest standards of space accorded to the subject, Aar Ya Paar does no justice to the tribal people of India. If anything, it’s an affront to the imagination. Sengupta’s Undekhi had a similar angle of tribal women being lifted from the Sundarbans, but there the visceral nature of their retaliation, felt rooted in native folklore. Here it feels plastered-on, as an uncomfortable spin-off of a tribal story that simply does not know how to interact with urbanity, in its world or on the script. There is an attempt here to humanise characters – Bhattaa is dying by the way – but everything, from the effects to the acting feels, like an arrow without a target - oddly unspecific.

You have to feel for Rawal here, who really doesn’t have a guide to follow nor a culture to insert himself into. This points to a wider problem really, the question of empathetic portrayals as opposed to sympathetic ones. Rawal seems lost here for the most part, and his struggles show in the presence of actors who make even farcically mediocre material light up. But then, they clearly have the easier of the tasks here. You can tell when a show is struggling to get its tone and direction in place when a collision of ecosystems is pegged around the introduction of a woman (a potential love interest played here by Patralekha, who simply cannot catch a break) as a device that indicates both notoriety and schema. There were far greater questions here, that could have been asked with great deftness and propriety and yet Sengupta and co squander it at will.

It’s hard to summarise a show’s flaws when it feels to so summarily uneven and jagged that it doesn’t just progress, but dives down a well of increasingly poor creative choices. This series travels to Romania, Poland etc but where it falters first is in the fictional town of Jadalganj, where it is initially set. Dahan , another Hotstar show set on the margins of urban India, did well to firmly anchor itself in a native culture that has to both elude yet intrigue. Aar Ya Paar achieves none of it because the milieu feels insincere, not to mention, offensive at certain points. Ambition is a great virtue to have but naked ambition can get you into rooms and ideas that displace, both your sense of comfort and belonging. There are hints in this series of what this creative team is capable of – they have done it before. And that is what they should have maybe, stuck to.

Luca Review

Luca is an ode to friendship. The 84-minute Pixar movie on Disney+, from feature directorial debutant Enrico Casarosa, is inspired by his own childhood — Luca is dedicated to Casarosa's best friend Alberto Surace, whose name he lends to the deuteragonist and the title protagonist's best friend — in the Italian Riviera in the 1970s and 1980s. It's set in a world that takes after the 1950s and the 1960s, for Casarosa doesn't feel as nostalgic (yet) about the eighties. But Luca 's is also a fantasy world. The aforementioned Luca (voiced by Jacob Tremblay, from Room) and Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer, from Shazam!) are actually “sea monsters”, feared and hunted by the humans who live above the surface. Though technically, they are shapeshifting amphibians, that become fish in water, and human on land.
