Sometimes, in the dead of

Sometimes, in the dead of winter- say January or February when the holiday cheer has worn off- I ask myself, "Why do I live in the upper Midwest?" But this time of year- late spring/ early summer- totally reminds me why people love Madison and stick around despite the long winters. If anything, I'd say Madisonians are pretty hardcore when it comes to winter- I frequently see people biking to work during the winter, sometimes even in a blizzard, and even if it's snowing, people will come out to protest!

Anyway, great profile of Madison. I've lived here for ten years (many of those years without a car) and our bike trails and public transportation is pretty awesome (we're not Portland yet, but we're definitely one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the US!).

You are right-on about all the great coffee shops- I also recommend Johson Public House on East Johnson Street, a newer place that moved into the former Company of Thieves building. They have excellent pour-over coffee- it takes a while to get a cup but it's well worth it! And yes, Victory and Barrique's are some of my favorite spots as well.

The UW is great, too, and although I didn't go there for undergrad, I love that their events are open to the public. I've attended several free lectures and films at the UW and the new Union South building. Free concerts on the terrace are also where it's at.

People are very friendly and polite. We're laid back. People get very involved in local politics (especially in the past year and a half), and lots of yards have little garden plots (Madisonians love projects and local food). We love our lakes. We love our microbrews and cheese curds. And fish fry.

In Madison, there are also a lot of fun neighborhood festivals during the summer, as well as DIY arts'n'crafts fests, 'zine fest, and the Fair Trade festival in December.

I also recommend the Kohler Art Museum in Sheboygan as a day trip. It's a really cool little museum focused on outsider art and folk art.

Tons of camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, and skiing opportunities in and around Madison if you're an outdoorsy person.

A few criticisms I've heard of Madison: people can be snobby or act very priviliged, there's not a lot of diversity, there is too big of a drinking culture, too much emphasis on sports, jobs are competitive since so many people here are super-educated, the live music scene could be better (a lot of bands seem to skip over us and go to either Chicago or Minneapolis), too cold.
