WHAT IS THE CRITICAL THINKING CHALLENGE?
The Critical Thinking Challenge is a team competition, open to all individual students, from grades 3 â 6, that promotes the practical application of mathematics, encourages teamwork, builds confidence, and increases learning skills, all while having FUN! 80% of adults "strongly agree" that K-12 schools should teach critical thinking to students, according to a Gallup poll on American attitudes toward public education. While achievement in the classroom may depend on mastery of content in core subject areas such as math and reading, Gallup says it also "depends on more than knowledge of core content. Critical thinking , creativity, communication, and other soft skills, as well as student physical and social well-being, are also necessary for future success in higher education and in the workplace." HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE CRITICAL THINKING CHALLENGE
Participation criteria.
- Online registration only. Click the banner at the top of the page to get started.
- Registration period: April 15 - May 12
- 3rd to 6th Graders in the 2024 Spring Semester
- $10 non-member registration fee (FREE for Eye Level students).
COMPETITION SCHEDULE
Local event, test location: local eye level learning centers, date: may 18 or may 25 or june 1, 2024(date set by each learning center) - 25 question competition - regardless of the school grade, all participants will answer the same questions - after the test, the center director will make one team consisting of 2 members based on the results - one team per eye level learning center for the national final round national final round, the final round will be conducted online via kahoot, date for the final round: june 15th, 2024 4pm (est), via kahoot.
- Only teams who pass the 1st round will be invited to the National Final Round
- One team from each Eye Level Learning Centers
- Two members per team
- To be eligible for the National Final Round, all team members must have registered online during the registration period
- Each student's school grade must be verified by submitting an approved document prior to participation in the National Final Round
- Total: 20 Critical Thinking Questions, which increase in difficulty as teams advance
- The teams selected for the final round will need to visit the Eye Level center to participate in the final round
- The team will need to join the Zoom meeting to participate in the final round. They will utilize additional tablets or mobile devices to access Kahoot!
This is how points are calculated:
- Divide response time by the question timer. For example, a team responded 2 seconds after a 30-second question timer started
- Divide that value by 2. For example, 0.0667 divided by 2 is 0.0333
- Subtract that value from 1. For example, 1 minus 0.0333 is 0.9667
- Multiply points possible by that value. For example, 1000 points possible multiplied by 0.9667 is 966.7
- Round to the nearest whole number. For example, 966.7 is 967 points
- The teams with the most points will win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place
- If there is a tie, tied teams will enter a tie breaking round

Grand prize (1 team) $1,000 usd (team), 2nd place prize (1 team) $500 usd (team), 3rd place prize (1 team) $300 usd (team), sample test paper & test location.

Critical Thinking Math
Eye Level Critical Thinking Math takes students through a curriculum of study areas covering advanced mathematics concepts, skills and applications. Each level emphasizes critical thinking through reasoning skills, such as sequencing, comparing, planning, hypothesizing, analyzing, critiquing and developing of deep perceptionâ that can all be applied in the studentâs everyday life. Critical thinker students can develop, therefore, greater concentration, better study habits and increases self-confidence and self-esteem.

Basic Thinking Math enables students to complete the foundation of mathematics and covers the following study areas: Numbers, Arithmetic, Measurement, and Equations.
The concept of critical thinking is derived from ancient Greek Kritikos meaning âdiscerning judgment based on standardsâ. Then it can actually be defined as âthinking explicitly aimed at well-founded judgment, utilizing appropriate evaluative standards such as logic in attempt to determine the true worth, merit or value of somethingâ. When we think, we bring a variety of thoughts in some order. When the combined thoughts support each other and make sense together, the thinking is logical. Critical thinking tradition seeks ways of understanding the mind and training the intellect so that such âerrors, blunders & distortionsâ of thought are minimized.

Eye Level Critical Thinking Mathematics
- Relationship Analysis: Classification, relation, similarities, differences, irrelevances
- Geometry and spatial Sense: Spatial placement of directions, distances & location of figures and objects. The geometry and spatial sense ability helps to improve studentsâ skills in conservation, visualization and estimation
- Problem solving strategy: Data Analysis, tree diagram, pattern recognition, alternative methods, drawing diagrams, reverse calculation, deduction, trial and error.
- Reasoning: Reasoning, which is a higher order thinking skill, is a necessary skill in higher education and in working environment as students are required to critically evaluate statements and to make logical judgments. They will be able to understand and integrate a procedural process to reach a solution. With a developed reasoning skill, students will be able to show inferencing power that goes beyond factual information, and they will not easily be influenced by vague and ambiguous language. When Eye Level instructors teach students, they ask questions to guide them and avoid spoon feeding, so that the students can come up with a solution with minimal assistance. Memorizing the solution to a problem will lead to mastery of the specific problem short term. Critical thinking is a skill that Eye Level would like to nurture in students. At Eye Level, a good (or strong) critical thinker is equipped with the tools to solve effectively unfamiliar problems on a long term basis.

What are the benefits of Eye Level Math?
1. Systematic study materials for all levels Eye Level Math uses a systematic curriculum which is divided into various levels according to student abilities. This allows students to fully understand and master the required mathematical concepts in a progressive manner.

Competence in maths is about so much more than, well, competence in maths.
Itâs true that core maths skills are stepping stones to almost all the other subjects on the British National Curriculum. But giving your child the best possible grounding in maths empowers them to do much more than hit academic targets. It equips them to explore ideas, think creatively and explain concepts. It stimulates curiosity, encourages them to ask questions and teaches them how to solve problems.
All of these skills and abilities are absolutely vital for almost every occupation your child might aspire to â and indeed for everyday life in general.
And yet, in the UK today, a third of all children fail GCSE maths and 20% of British adults are effectively innumerate.
Our Promise
Itâs all too common to hear both children and adults describe themselves as ânot good with numbersâ, as if itâs an ability youâre either born with or not. But this couldnât be further from the truth. Two of the biggest obstacles to success in maths are actually fear and a lack of confidence.
Thatâs why our maths-tuition programme is as much about breaking down these barriers to learning as it is about helping children get to grips with maths concepts. This approach boosts the confidence of even the most reluctant mathematician, reframing their mindset from âI canât do mathsâ to âI love maths!â â often in a matter of weeks!
Learning without fear
The reason many people fear maths is because there is a clear right or wrong answer to every question.
There are no grey areas, and this often makes children afraid to have a go for fear of being wrong â especially if they feel the pressure of being among peers in the classroom. Our maths tuition programme centres on inspiring children to become self-directed learners who are not afraid to ask for help or make mistakes.
There are no calculators here! Instead, our students learn to trust themselves to mentally process numbers, which gives them confidence that they can rely on their own abilities.
Learning without limits
As well as working with children who lack confidence or ability in maths, we also meet many who are already extremely capable â often working beyond age-related expectations â but theyâve become bored and disengaged with the subject because theyâre not being stretched or challenged at school.
Just as every child is unique, so too is their relationship with maths. At Eye Level, we refuse to take a one-size-fits-all approach to tuition: our curriculum is led entirely by ability, not age. We constantly adapt and individualise each childâs programme to meet them at their level and challenge them to go further.

How does Eye Level maths tuition work?
Take a FREE Diagnostic Test. This will assess your childâs current abilities in arithmetic, word problem solving and critical thinking.
Our experienced instructors will tailor your childâs individual programme and get them started on our curriculum at the right level.
STEP THREE:
Begin your programme! The first stages are designed to motivate your child and develop their study skills, before they start working through their personalised maths programme.
Come to class up to twice a week. Our experienced tutors will deliver 1-1 coaching and encourage self-directed learning as your child moves through their learning plan.
Complete the supported homework between classes and bring it back to us for marking and checking.
An end-of-level assessment will measure your childâs progress and celebrate their achievements.

Critical Thinking Math Challenge is an event suitable for all Kindergartens and Grade 1 students. This challenge seeks to stimulate awareness about the importance of critical thinking for studying Mathematics. We hold the event at the HKCEC every year as we believe more than a thousand students sitting together can provide a memorable experience to kids that many of their peers enjoy learning math.
There are 30 CTM questions in the event. Four areas of Critical Thinking Math included geometry, reasoning, patters & measurement will be test in the event. Questions will be read out in English and Cantonese.
