Demon Review: `ஏங்க... பேய்கிட்ட போய் இப்படியா பேசுவீங்க?' ஹாரர் படமாக மிரட்டுகிறதா இந்த `டீமன்'?

பேய் படத்துக்கான முதல்கட்ட வேலையே அச்ச உணர்வினைத் தந்து, அதைத் திரைக்கதையோடு சேர்த்து நிலையாகக் கொண்டு போவதுதான். இப்படத்தில் அதற்கான சிரத்தை எதுவும் திரைக்கதையிலிருந்ததாக தெரியவில்லை.

சினிமாவில் இணை இயக்குநராக இருக்கும் விக்னேஷ் சிவன் (சச்சின்) தயாரிப்பாளரிடம் ஹாரர் கதை ஒன்றைக் கூறி ஓகே வாங்குகிறார். அதற்கான வேலையைத் தொடங்குவதற்குத் தனியாக ஒரு வீடு எடுத்துத் தங்குகிறார். அங்கே சில அமானுஷ்யங்கள் நடக்க, அடுத்தடுத்து அவர் வாழ்வில் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பதே `டீமன்' படத்தின் கதை.

கனவுகளால் குழம்பிய மனநிலை, தனக்கு என்ன நடக்கிறது என்று தெரியாத கையறுநிலை ஆகிய சூழலைச் சிறப்பாகக் கையாண்டுள்ளார் கதாநாயகன் சச்சின். ஒரே மாதிரியான காட்சி அமைப்புகளுக்கு மத்தியில் தன்னால் முடிந்த அளவு வித்தியாசங்களைக் காட்ட முயற்சி செய்துள்ளார். நாயகி அபர்ணதியின் கால்ஷீட்டைப் பாடல்களுக்கு மட்டுமே வாங்கியிருப்பார்கள் போல! அதற்கு மேல் அவருக்கு வேலை இல்லை. நண்பராக வரும் கும்கி அஷ்வின் நடிப்பில் செயற்கைத்தனம் எட்டிப்பார்க்கிறது. நாயகனின் உதவி இயக்குநர் பட்டாளம் முழுவதுமே கேமராவைப் பார்த்துப் பேசிக் கொள்வது போன்ற உணர்வையே தருகிறார்கள்.

ஆரம்பமே தனியாக பங்களா, ஒரே ஒரு பெண், மின்வெட்டு, அமைதி, திடீரென தெரியும் உருவம் என வழக்கமான டெம்ப்ளேட்டான கதையைச் சொல்லி, அது நிஜமல்ல நாயகன் தன் படத்துக்காகத் தயாரிப்பாளரிடம் கதை சொல்கிறார் என ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. இது போன்ற பல டெம்ப்ளேட் குவியல்களைக் கொட்டி, ஒவ்வொரு காட்சி முடிந்த பின்பும் இது நிஜமல்ல நாயகனின் கனவு என்று சொல்வதில் முடிகிறது முதல் பாதி. ஏற்கெனவே பார்வையாளர்களை விலகிச் செல்ல வைக்கும் திரைக்கதை ஒருபக்கம் என்றால் நடு நடுவே காதலும் பாடலும் வந்து போகின்றன.

இரண்டாம் பாதி ஆரம்பிக்க, கண்ணாடியில் நாயகனின் உருவம் வயோதிகம் அடைந்தது போன்று தோன்றுகிறது. இதனால் ஓடுகிறார், கத்துகிறார். மனநல மருத்துவரைப் பார்க்கிறார். ஆனால் ஏன் அப்படி நடந்தது என்று படம் முடிந்த பிறகும் காரணம் சொல்லப்படவில்லை. இப்படிப் பல காட்சிகளைப் படத்திலிருந்து நீக்கினாலும் படத்துக்கு எந்தப் பாதிப்பும் ஏற்படாது என்பது பெரிய சறுக்கல்.

முதல் பாதியைப் போல “தூங்கினால் ஒரு பேய் கனவு” என்று இரண்டாம் பாதியும் பொறுமையைச் சோதிக்க, ஒரு வழியாகப் படம் முடியும் வேளையில் ஒரு கதை சொல்லப்படுகிறது. அது சமீபத்தில் வெளியான நெட்பிளிக்ஸ் ஆவணத்தொடரான “ஹவுஸ் ஆப் சீக்ரெட்ஸ்” கதையைத் தழுவிய உணர்வைக் கொடுக்கிறது. லாஜிக் மீறல்கள் பேய் படத்தில் இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் படத்தை விட்டு பார்வையாளர்கள் விலகிச் செல்லும் அளவிற்கு இருப்பது படத்தின் பலவீனமாக மாறிவிடும். உதாரணத்திற்கு இதற்கு முன் அந்த வீட்டில் குடிவந்த இரண்டு நபர்களையும் உடனே கொன்றுவிட்ட பேய், நாயகனிடம் மட்டும் எதுக்கு ஐஸ் பாய் விளையாட்டு விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்பது தெரியவில்லை.

மார்க் ஆண்டனி - சினிமா விமர்சனம்

ரோனி ரபேலின் பின்னணி இசையைப் பொறுத்தவரைக் கிடைத்த எல்லா காட்சிகளிலும் நிரப்பி வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். சாதாரணமான காட்சிகளுக்கும் கனமான இசை கோர்ப்பு அவசியமற்றதாகத் தெரிகிறது. “இந்த இசையை எங்கோ கேட்டிருக்கிறோம்” என்ற உணர்வும் சில இடங்களில் ஏற்படுகிறது. பாடல்கள் பெரிதாக ஈர்க்கவில்லை. இரவுக் காட்சிகளிலும், இரண்டு அறைகள் இருக்கும் வீட்டிற்குள்ளும் கேமரா கோணங்களையும், ஒளியுணர்வையும் சிறப்பாகக் கையாண்டுள்ளார் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் ஆர்.எஸ்.ஆனந்தகுமார். கதையே இல்லாத திரைக்கதைக்கு எந்த விதத்தில் படத்தைக் கோர்க்க முடியுமோ அதனைச் செய்துள்ளார் படத்தொகுப்பாளர் ரவிக்குமார் எம். ‘இது நிஜமல்ல கனவு’ என்று மீண்டும் மீண்டும் வரும் கனவு காட்சிகளை வேறுவிதமாகக் கோர்த்திருக்கலாம். VFX மற்றும் கலை இயக்குநர் தங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட பணியைச் சிறப்பாகச் செய்துள்ளனர். குறிப்பாகப் பூட்டப்பட்ட அறையில் அந்தக் காலத்து வடநாட்டுக் குடும்பம் வாழ்வது போன்ற சித்திரிப்பில் கலை இயக்கம் கவனிக்க வைக்கிறது.

ஒரு குறும்படத்துக்கு உரியக் கதை என்றாலும் கதையின் நிகழ்வுகள், கதை சொல்லும் விதத்தில் மெனக்கெட்டு இருந்தால் பார்வையாளர்களை 2 மணிநேரங்கள் கட்டிப்போட்டுவிடலாம். பல படங்கள் இதற்கு உதாரணமாக இருக்கின்றன. ஆனால் இங்கே அந்த மெனக்கெடல் கேமரா மற்றும் தொழில்நுட்பத்தைப் பயன்படுத்திய விதத்தில் மட்டுமே வெளிப்படுகிறது, கதையில் இல்லை.

படத்தின் க்ளைமாக்ஸ் காட்சியில் நாயகன், “இப்படி இரக்கம் இல்லாமல் நடந்துக்கிறியே நீ எல்லாம் பேயா” என்ற ரேஞ்சுக்கு டீமனிடம் (பேயிடம்) வசனம் பேசித் தப்பிக்கிறார். இதைச் சற்று முன்னர் செய்திருந்தால் நாமாவது தப்பித்திருப்போமே என்ற உணர்வையே தருகிறது இந்த `டீமன்'.

தயாரிப்பு - வின்டோ பாய் பிக்சர்ஸ் இயக்கம் - ரமேஷ் பழனிவேல் இசை - ரோனி ரபேல் நடிப்பு - சச்சின், அபர்ணதி வெளியான தேதி - 22 செப்டம்பர் 2023 நேரம் - 2 மணி நேரம் 2 நிமிடம் ரேட்டிங் - 2/5 தமிழ் சினிமாவில் சரியான இடைவெளியில் பேய்க் கதைகள் வந்து கொண்டுதான் இருக்கின்றன. அதில் ஒரு சில படங்கள் மட்டுமே பயத்தை ஏற்படுத்தி ரசிக்க வைக்கின்றன. இந்தப் படம் பயமுறுத்தியதா அல்லது படுத்தியதா என்பதைப் பார்ப்போம். பேய்க் கதை என்றால் லாஜிக் பார்க்க வேண்டாம் என்று சொல்வார்கள். இருந்தாலும் ஒரு அடிப்படையான லாஜிக்காவது இருக்க வேண்டும். இந்தப் படத்தில் அதையெல்லாம் தள்ளி வைத்துவிட்டு தனது வசதிக்கேற்றபடி திரைக்கதை அமைத்து படத்தைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர் ரமேஷ் பழனிவேல்.

தயாரிப்பாளர் ஒருவரிடம் கதை சொல்லி படம் இயக்கும் வாய்ப்பைப் பெறுகிறார் சச்சின். அதற்கு வசதியாக ஒரு பிளாட்டிற்கு புதிதாக குடி போகிறார். அங்கு போனதுமே அவருக்கு விதவிதமான பேய்க் கனவுகள் வருகின்றன. பின்னர்தான் அந்த பிளாட்டில் பேய் இருக்கிறது என்பது அவருக்குத் தெரிய வருகிறது. அங்கிருந்து அவர் தப்பித்தாரா இல்லையா என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. படம் ஆரம்பித்த கொஞ்ச நேரம் காதல் கதையாகப் போகுமா என எதிர்பார்த்தால் திடீர் என 'யு டர்ன்' அடித்து இது பேய்க் கதை என்று படத்தை நகர்த்துகிறார்கள். தொடர் கனவுகள், பயந்து போகும் கதாநாயகன் சச்சின் என அடுத்தடுத்து சலிப்பை ஏற்படுத்தும் காட்சிகள்தான் படத்தில் அதிகம் நிறைந்திருக்கிறது. ஒரு காதல் நாயகனுக்குரிய அனைத்து அம்சங்களுடன் இருக்கிறார் சச்சின். முதலில் அவரை ஒரு சுவாரசியமான இளைஞராகக் காட்டிவிட்டு, பின் அப்படி பயந்து நடுங்குபவராகக் காட்டியிருப்பது முரணாக உள்ளது. பேய்க் கதையைப் படமாக்க இருக்கும் ஒரு இயக்குனர் பேய்களை இப்படித்தான் டீல் செய்வாரா என்ற கேள்வியும் எழுகிறது. நண்பர்களிடம் கூட தனக்கு என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பதை சொல்லாமல் இருக்கிறார். அந்த பிளாட்டில் அக்கம், பக்கம் உள்ளவர்களிடம் கூட, ஏன் வாட்ச்மேனிடம் கூட அது பற்றி விசாரிக்க மாட்டாரா கதாநாயகன். இப்படி பல கேள்விகள் எழுகிறது. சச்சின் ஜோடியாக அபர்ணதி. ஆரம்பத்தில் சில காட்சிகள், ஒரு டூயட் ஆகியவற்றுடன் அவரது வேலை முடிந்து போகிறது. நண்பர்கள் என அத்தனை பேர் இருக்கிறார்கள், அவர்கள் எல்லாம் நண்பன் காணாமல் போன பிறகுதான் அக்கறையாய் விசாரிக்கிறார்கள். பிளாஷ்பேக்கில் ஒரு குடும்பத்தின் கதை என ஒன்றைச் சொல்கிறார்கள். அதிர்ச்சியாக இருந்தாலும் நிஜத்தில் நடந்த சம்பவம் ஒன்றை சற்றே மாற்றி சொல்லியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர். ஒரு பிளாட்டுக்குள் முடிந்தவரையில் மாற்றி மாற்றி படம் பிடித்திருக்கிறார் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் ஆனந்தகுமார். ரோனி ரபேல் பின்னணி இசை பரவாயில்லை, பேய்ப் படங்களுக்கு பயமுறுத்தும்படி வாசித்தாலே போதுமானது. எதையோ நினைத்து என்னென்னமோ சொல்லியிருக்கிறது இந்த டீமன். Demon Movie Review: Jarring music, subpar performances, and pacing issues bog down this promising horror film

Despite horror films becoming a staple in Tamil cinema recently, we haven't seen any white saree-clad ghosts with long hair roaming around haunted mansions. It felt therapeutic that these paranormal figures attained salvation from their eternal fashion statement and the horror imaginations of our filmmakers. But then came Ramesh Pazhaniivel's debut feature film, Demon , which brings those sartorial choices back with a vengeance.

Why bother with elaborate world-building when the film is riddled with template music and generic visuals right from the introduction? As I chuckled at the irony of laughing during a horror film, the twist was revealed — we were actually watching aspiring filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, aka Vicky's (Sachin), pitch to a producer. Upon receiving the producer's approval, Vicky unknowingly rents a haunted flat. And thus, the Demon begins. As easy as it is to guess the genre of the film from its title, we also see the filmmaker not trying too hard to dole out any surprises. White-dress-donned figures, jump scares, and eerie music have been an inescapable trope of horror genres. However, the real test of a horror movie lies in whether it can maintain audience engagement. Unfortunately, Demon falls short in this regard. It sways from scene to scene without an organic segue. As a result, the narrative moves in an excruciating pace and tests our patience. 

If the pacing is a problem, the shortcomings in the writing get exacerbated by the jarring background score. Imagine listening to a beautiful melody, only to suddenly hear a creepy score and witness lightning striking the sky while random tunes scatter and reappear. Unfortunately, this musical transition feels out of place because the script lacks a proper connection between scenes. While there are moments where Demon shows signs of redemption, the film is unfortunately marred by poor writing. There is a love track for Sachin's character that is outrightly problematic. Just because ghosts stalk people, it doesn't mean the hero can follow the heroine on his bike as long as it takes to make the heroine fall for him. Vicky's friends' gang and their interactions have no sense of naturality, and their performance and dialogue delivery don't help things either. The breathing space in the first half gets sacrificed for an unnecessarily convoluted second half and middling attempts to ramp up the horror elements. Things don't just get overwhelming but indecipherable, too.  However, it isn't that the makers of Demon don't try. It is just that the attempts don't always land properly. For instance, the eerie incidents that Vicky experiences in the new apartment are depicted as his dreams. While this is understandable, the problem lies in the fact that Vicky had multiple dreams that featured various events, which is sans any logic. It is important the writing stays true to the world it creates, and Demon doesn't really do that. The complications in the writing are compounded by the making. When certain events unfold within a photo frame, akin to a television show, when scenes are oddly interspersed with sporadic drone shots in unemotional settings, that made me ask, "Why?" As events pile up and Vicky somehow tries to get to the bottom of it, we are introduced to a recent real-life horror story that is seeing multiple iterations across many streaming platforms.  A shining aspect of Demon is undoubtedly Sachin's performance, which is head and shoulders above the majority of the cast, who deliver subpar performances.  Most of the well-made and well-received horror movies have certain prerequisites, and Demon seems to have all of it on paper. But it is important that these aspects are used in the right amounts. It is high time the fashion choices of our ghosts are reconsidered. This might also result in a rejig of how we showcase their demonic aspirations. Let sleeping ghosts lie, perhaps?

Demon review: This ‘demon’ doesn’t really scare you!

'Demon' starts on a slow note with no sign of the story picking up the pace and a romantic track that has no connection.

Director Ramesh Pazhaniivel comes up with a horror film that has a plot that is relatively new but one that does not impress.

The director takes quite a while to set things in motion. It is not until the second half begins that you actually see the plot picking up pace.  

Although the second half moves at a much faster pace than the first and has your undivided attention, it fails to end with a flourish.

Before we go into the pluses and minuses, here is the synopsis:

Vignesh Shivan (Sachin) is an assistant director who is looking to direct his first film.  

As luck would have it, he finds a producer who is interested in producing his directorial venture — a horror flick. The youngster is thrilled and shares the good news with his set of close friends.  

Before he begins work on his first film, the young filmmaker feels he needs to move into a new home where he can work more comfortably.   So, he sets out and finds an apartment.

The man who rents out the apartment agrees to let him modify the apartment to his taste and Vignesh Shivan is thrilled.  

He moves into the new home and modifies it with the help of his friends. When everything is done and he looks to settle down, problems begin.

Soon after moving in, Vignesh Shivan starts getting nightmares which invariably make him wake up in a startled state.  

Each day, he has a new nightmare. Initially, Vignesh Shivan dismisses these nightmares lightly. But soon, there comes a day when he is scared to sleep for fear of getting nightmares.  

With each passing day, problems start to increase, and the nightmares begin to take a toll on him. Eventually, he realises that the previous occupants of the flat have all died unnatural deaths.

What is causing the inmates of the flat to die? Does Vignesh Shivan too die? Demon gives us the answers.

A slow start.

Demon starts on a slow note. There is no sign of the story picking up the pace. To make matters worse, there is a romantic track that has no connection whatsoever to the horror portions.

The romantic portions, which come across as an unwanted distraction in the film, are quite long. In fact, a considerable portion of the first half is taken up by the romantic portions.  

The second half begins on a more promising note with the different pieces of the jigsaw puzzle beginning to fall into place.  

However, the developments showcased in the film aren’t entirely convincing and that again dents the credibility of the Demon .  

For instance, one wonders why a person who strongly suspects the presence of evil powers in a place wishes to go back again and again to stay there.

One also wonders why he does not share these details or concerns with his friends or his father, with whom he is shown to be close.  

The number of such questions only continues to increase as the movie reaches its climax.

Decent performances.

Demon has some decent performances coming in from almost all its artistes.

Sachin, who plays Vignesh Shivan, isn’t convincing in the romantic portions. But he does a mighty fine job in the second half when he portrays a man under immense stress because of supernatural interference.  

Abarnathi delivers a neat performance. However, sadly, the chemistry between the lead pair doesn’t work. Therefore, the romantic portions of the film deliver more strain than offer relief to audiences.

“Kumki” Ashvin, who plays the hero’s closest friend, does a neat job as well.  

Ronnie Raphael’s intense background score and RS Anandakumar’s eerie visuals play a significant part in enhancing the element of fear.

To cut a long story short, this Demon fails to scare you!

Shailaja was born on April 21, 1981, into a family of well-educated individuals.
