Indian 2 Review: Indian Thatha Returns Without Fangs In A Flashier Sequel

Writer and Director: S Shankar

Cast: Kamal Haasan , Siddharth , SJ Suryah, Rakul Preet Singh, Priya Bhavani Shankar

Duration: 150 mins

Available in: Theatres

What made Senapathi, a greying father of two, a complicated yet superior superhero in Shankar’s Indian thirty years back was not the fact that he could kill people at 70 or put the fear of God in people while slitting the throat of a doctor on national television. Behind his tough exterior, Shankar’s hero wore the wounds of his past like an armour — the grief of being used to losing his loved ones in the freedom struggle translated brilliantly to the present, where he goes on to kill even his son for the greater good. In Senapathi’s hands, the varma kalai was a mere accessory that elevated his superpower, that is his grit. In Indian 2 , Kamal Haasan’s Senapathi is stripped of this superpower. The stoic hero is left to purr.

It’s easy to see why Shankar wanted to bring back the Indian thatha. In 1996, Shankar gave Tamil cinema a vigilante hero to talk about issues that chip away at our country — this went on to become a trope, with directors emulating Senapathi with their own stock vigilante heroes. The India of 2024 is different from the India of 1996. The world is more polarised than ever before today, but the director chooses to focus on the issues that have remained the same — corruption, medical negligence, educational fraud and so on.

But even if the world in the film has moved on — we have AI standing in for the brilliance of actors such as Nedumudi Venu, incredible prosthetic and makeup work to make a centenarian look cool, and polished stunts — the treatment remains terribly conventional. Elaborate scenes and monologues (was Senapathi ever so chatty?) are stitched up to make this 100-something messiah cool, while the film forgets the one thing that actually made him unique: his personality.

In Senapathi’s attempt to clean up the country yet another time, he becomes a social media crusader. If the relatively younger generation was lawless in the first part (his son Chandru is a corrupt brake officer), the boomer generation grows up to stay corrupt in the sequel. So, he rallies up the youngsters to throw out the leeches. Helping him in this fight is a reformist  YouTube channel called Barking Dogs, headed by Siddharth’s Chitra Aravindan, the son of an anti-corruption government officer (Samuthirakani). But when Indian thatha directs these youngsters to clean up their own house before the world, his plan starts to backfire. The fickleness of social media and the complexities of living with crooked yet loving parents is explored with some amount of effort in the film.

In a superb nod to the first part, a man isn’t allowed to perform the last rights of a loved one for placing the world before his family. But again, none of these details let the characters leap — apart from Siddharth’s Chithra who has a moving backstory with his mother — because in the end they are over-the-top caricatures. SJ Suryah gets a glorified cameo as a ravenous villain who is decked up in gold — a detail that’s included to probably make us believe he is a criminal, there is another granite bigwig who relieves himself in a pot made of gold.

Indian was by no means a perfect film. It was still a film drenched in sexual innuendos — a marker of films from a particular time. But it still had just the right amount of rigour that made us root for its far-fetched world where a timeworn veteran could kick a man or two. Sujatha’s dialogue also made these characters firmly grounded to reality. Sure, Chandru accepts bribes to get ahead in life, but a streak of shame instantly crosses his face when his blunders cost the lives of children. It was a film that explored the penalty of being a bad and a good person. The sequel has no space for such deep dualities. It focuses on “weapons” of revolution such as “social media” and “varma kalai (an artform that gets disturbing iterations including a transphobic varmam)” instead of the revolution itself. No amount of modernisation can save a film that’s so deeply conservative at heart.

Indian 2 Movie Review

Indian 2 Movie Review

Indian 2 Movie Review

'Indian 2' Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad; Find Out From Viewers' Words

After a long wait, Kamal Haasan and Shankar's ambitious film 'Indian 2' is hitting the screens worldwide on Friday, July 12.

It is a sequel to 'Indian 2' which was released in 1996. The latest instalment is much bigger than the first part. Another part of the movie will be released next year.

Indian 2 Movie Review What s Good What s Bad Find Out From Viewers Words

Kamal Haasan returns as Senapati, an anti-corruption crusader and vigilante who had killed his own son in the 'Indian'. The latest flick has Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, SJ Suryah, Bobby Simha, Brahmanandam, Samthuthirakani among others. It also features the late Vivekh and Manobala.

The film has Anirudh's music, Ravi Varman's cinematography and Sreekar Prasad's editing.

Story: In 'Indian 2,' the sequel maintains the excitement of its predecessor while continuing the core theme of fighting injustice. The storyline picks up where "Indian" left off, with Senapathy, a former freedom fighter turned vigilante, returning to combat widespread corruption in the country.

Spurred by public demand, Senapathy reemerges to champion justice, teaming up with a young man who exposes corrupt politicians through internet videos.

The trailer opens with scenes depicting widespread crimes and scams across India, narrated by a woman's voice that highlights issues like unemployment and corruption. Siddharth's character reflects on his childhood hero, Senapathy, who has been in hiding but returns dramatically.

Senapathy takes on corrupt businessmen and enemies, engaging in intense fights and using disguises to outsmart them. When questioned about his methods, Senapathy defends his forceful actions as necessary to save the nation, in contrast to Siddharth's character's preference for Gandhian nonviolence.

The movie has garnered a lot of hype. Will the movie live up to the viewers' expectations? Find it out here:

Venky Reviews: #Indian2 is an outdated and tedious movie. Though the movie tries to give honest messages, it's done in a boring way with no proper emotion and drama at all.

Shankar tried to repeat the screenplay of his old movies but fails to recreate the magic big time. All of the emotions are completely artificial and feel like a serial drama. The film had a good start for about 20 minutes along with Senapathys entry but continues to go down hill after that.

The grandeur and production values are nice. Anirudh had no scope to give an impactful score. While you can atleast sit through the first half, the second half doesn't give you that chance. Disaster! #Bharateeyudu2

#Indian2 Strictly Average 1st Half!

Film starts off well with building an emotional set-up but then goes down a predictable and routine path. So far reminds us of Shankars old screenplay structure but the routine screenplay style makes it less impactful. Needs a good 2nd half #Bharateeyudu2 Kamal Hassan is doing well. Grandeur and Production Values stand out in the first half. Anirudhs BGM is pretty ineffective so far.

Let's X OTT GLOBAL: So far Sooo Goood #Indian2 🔥

Decent Intro for @ikamalhaasan First Half Packed With Some Engaging Sequences

@shankarshanmugh's Visual Treat Interval Sequence BANGER With @anirudhofficial's BGM🔥💥💥 Two Track Mission 🔥 Senapathy's get-up with long hair hasn't come out well 😐 Could be better Required a Strong Second Half 🏆🏆 Calendar Song is Visually Great Experience

Karthik: Very outdated screenplay and should have released long time ago. Can't believe it from #Shankar. My comedy idle and master of one liner #Vivek is a big plus. So dearly miss him. #BGM is a big let down from mass MD #Anirudh #Average 1st half. Hope 2nd half saves it. #Indian2 Iconic, Innovative and first of a kind of GRAND OG director of India, #Shankar sir will surely leave a big black mark in his career with this #Indian2. Felt like watching documentary. Maybe I expected at least trendy or maybe emotional or entertaining one but this one doesn't. #Shankar sir you are still a GOAT director of Indian cinema and you can bounce back. #Average

Sai Reviews: Better second half but that really is not saying much. Shankar delves into the plot and Siddharth's arc is interesting but it's dunked in loads of syrupy melodrama and messy action. Seems like Shankar really forgets the strengths of Indian to produce a potpourri out of #Indian2 I thought the entire track of Siddharth had potential where the movie asks the question at what cost can you uphold absolute justice and has a little bit of space for an ethical development, but it mashes all of its ethics away with Shankar and Ani BGM w/ Senapathi's every act

Judging by the looks #Indian3 doesn't look any better as it delves into Senapathy's dad's backstory (hence confirming that Paaaraa is an exclusive part 3 song😭), endlessly extending this very confusing and unnecessary saga of Moral justice and mealy melodrama. Didn't like

Better second half but that really is not saying much. Shankar delves into the plot and Siddharth's arc is interesting but it's dunked in loads of syrupy melodrama and messy action. Seems like Shankar really forgets the strengths of Indian to produce a potpourri out of #Indian2

Shankar stages everything with as much grandeur but the outdated-ness is felt sorely. Everything feels like a sore ripoff of a Tamil blockbuster 10 years ago. It's unapologetically lavish and Herculean, yes, but at the cost of the entire movie? Where's the substance? Not really looking forward to this second half. The Sivaji reference halfway was more entertaining than the entire movie. Alr people have begun comparing it with Darbar and Annaatthe here, so yk the level at how much it's disappointing

Bossu: Average 1st half Jaragandi song ref and few scenes 👍🏽 #Bharateeyudu2 #Indian2

Chonik: Done with show of #Indian2 #Bharateeyudu2, 2nd half was very disappointing. Though the idea behind movie is good, it was delivered in a bad & boring way. The setup was completely wasted, & Shankar sir lost his touch. As a big fan of his work, I was very disappointed.

T.H.A.R.U.N: #Indian2 is so terrible. Its a disgrace to the first part. Not a single department did justice. It proves again that @shankarshanmugh is nothing without Sujatha Rangarajan. Feel sorry for Ram Charan for wasting his prime with this outdated director.

Guru K: When the director was forced to do 3 big movies simultaneously substandard product is what expected. Greediness of producers spoils directors focus/vision.#Indian2 This should have been just 1 sequel instead of 2.

Revolution4SRK: Vintage Shankar sir seems to be back in form. Crisper editing would have done wonders. Best work in recent years from him. #indian2

Krishna Vemuri: #indian2 is a spectacle. Watch and enjoy.

All Pie is Good Pie: In the final moments, Kamal looks directly into the camera and says, "I'll be back!" But I'm afraid no sane person in this world'll ever be back. The greatest disaster you'll ever see or never see. Kamal looked good in the Indian3 trailer but I'm afraid it's a lost cause #Indian2

‘Indian 2’ movie review: Kamal Haasan, Shankar’s underwhelming sequel relies more on its past legacy and future promise

Despite a barrage of ideas that usually work wonders in shankar’s films, most of them in kamal haasan-led ‘indian 2’ fall flat thanks to a disengaging plot needlessly stretched to milk the upcoming ‘indian 3’.

After making his debut with the Robin Hood-esque Gentleman and mounting a simple love story on a complex political backdrop with his sophomore film Kadhalan , director Shankar dialled it up to eleven with his third film, Indian . Apart from the trope of a former freedom fighter taking up arms against those decimating his country, the poignant backstory gave the titular hero a reason to turn vigilante, a cause worth sacrificing even his own son. This sense of emotional turmoil the character had and the empathy it rightfully extracted from us are just some of the many crucial elements that the sequel Indian 2 misses.

Senapathy (Kamal Haasan), who reaches Hong Kong at the end of Indian , is now in Taiwan, the land where his idol Subhas Chandra Bose died. While those who waited for Bose’s return never got to see that, a bunch of YouTubers, disillusioned by corruption, trend #ComeBackIndian on social media causing the veteran to return to his homeland. While everyone expects him to serve justice with his belt buckle knife, he first asks the country’s youngsters to call out the corrupt folks in their own households because... cleaning starts at home.

Indian 2 (Tamil)

Probably the biggest takeaway of Indian 2 is how the sequel tries to shed light on the people behind corruption and the aftermath of ratting out on those near and dear; lives are lost and families are broken. The very idea of focusing on the aftermath of being straight as an arrow, something which Shankar toyed with the death of Senapathy’s daughter in the first part, makes for an endearing ethical dilemma that our ‘Indian’ and ‘Indians’ who count on him had to encounter. But this idea, unlike Senapathy’s knife, barely scratches the surface.

What we are left with are templates that we once used to love in Shankar’s films — grand sets, songs in exotic locales, and huge action set pieces, as well as tropes we long-hoped the veteran would let go of. Cringed at the gross portrayal of the trans makeup artist from I ? There’s an unnecessarily problematic scene here where our hero, with his varma kalai , makes a womaniser/rich man act effeminate. Remember the “kuppathu porikki pasanga” stereotype from Mudhalvan ? Now they’re apparently youngsters with bright-coloured hair hiding behind the anonymity of the Internet and abusing people online. Ever accessed the government’s welfare schemes, dubbed freebies? Well, according to the film, you should be ashamed of being bribed to overlook substandard governance.

A scene features an unskilled doctor looking for the patient’s appendix while operating on her from her back. The film milks this caricaturish portrayal of a doctor for an emotional sequence. But it strays away from talking about more pressing issues like the NEET fiasco that’s straining the future of medical professionals in the country. In another instance, Shankar equates the snitching of a man taking lakhs of rupees as a bribe with a fisherwoman who is caught for adding weight to increase her catch’s price. In the filmmaker’s Garuda Purana — as Anniyan mentions in his film — crime is not a vest to be measured as small, large and extra large. While a similar wealthy official who gets arrested for corruption walks scot-free the same day, the film never tells us the fate of those caught akin to the fisherwoman. Shankar’s solutions to issues have mostly been authoritative and idealistic, but they seldom look at the grassroots-level causes behind them. Yet, his skewered take on everyday issues is the least of Indian 2’s worries.

Unlike Indian , the sequel takes the war against corruption across the country. You know the film isn’t fooling around when the smoking and drinking statutory warnings are replaced with a line that goes, “Corruption causes cancer to the nation”. While the film showcases a rogues’ gallery of villains from different states— indulging in everything from granite scams to recruitment scams — none of the punishments meted out to them feel as cathartic as the ones we saw in the original film. The fact that they range from singing non-stop till they drop dead or running like a horse (complete with neighing noises, I kid you not) till they die of exhaustion isn’t exactly as menacing as what Shankar does with villains in his older films.

Apart from Kamal, it’s Siddharth along with his gang of friends, played by Priya Bhavani Shankar, Jagan and Rishikanth, who get most of the screen-time, but their trials and tribulations never hit us hard, unlike what the character of Manorama goes through in Indian . The fact that all it takes is one worldwide trending hashtag, #ComeBackIndian, for Senapathy to end his vanavaas and come to India, and another trend #GoBackIndian for the whole nation to vouch against our hero, feels extremely artificial.

What hurts the most are two aspects: how the grandeur Shankar is known for falls like a house of cards when not backed with a sturdy plot and how the very character of Senapathy is altered to make the umpteen theories that floated online before the film’s release sound better. For starters, the visually stunning ‘Calendar Song’, or any song for that matter, add no value to the film. And when Senapathy, chased by a gang of goons, runs inside a glass-making company, you can almost hear late Vivek’s line from Vedi, “Welcome to fight location” in your ears. Senapathy, in 1996’s Indian , was an old, hunched man whose superpower, apart from varma kalai , was to look like any other individual and that gave him the cover to make his kills and escape without a trace. In Indian 2, though, he’s seen jumping walls, intruding impenetrable places, fighting an assemblage of baddies and even escaping with an electric unicycle in a tediously long chase sequence.

A brilliant Krishnaswamy (Nedumudi Venu) proved to be a worthy enemy to Senapathy in the original film. But in Indian 2 , his son Pramod (Bobby Simha) is just another typical Tamil film cop primarily used by Senapathy to call out nepotism similar to varisu arasiyal. Similarly, SJ Suryah, who we assume is the main antagonist in the next sequel, appears merely for seconds just like other veterans like Brahmanandam. Even the dialogues don’t work in favour of the film; we are attacked with lines like ‘idhu karumam illa, varumam’ and ‘soththu kaga oduna nee ippo death kaga odu’.

Finally, you know a film is in deep trouble these days when even Anirudh can’t salvage it with his score. Interestingly, Indian 2 reuses a lot of AR Rahman’s original score; not only does it work brilliantly, but also makes for some of the best moments in the film.

And speaking of earlier outings, the references to Shankar and Kamal’s previous works, especially Indian, are aplenty, including a homage of sorts to Goundamani and Senthil. But despite a barrage of ideas that usually work wonders in Shankar’s projects, most of them fall flat thanks to an uninteresting treatment that stretches the sequel to two films. A glimpse at the end teases what’s in store in Indian 3.... this 140-odd-second clip delivers what the 180-minute film couldn’t. Banking on the nostalgic value of its predecessor and a visibly intriguing sequel that’s coming up next year, Indian 2 struggles to be relevant and entertaining. More than #ComeBackIndian, we hope Indian 3 will be a comeback for the veteran filmmaker and the legendary actor.

Indian 2 review: Yet another sequel that tarnishes the reputation of the original

The Shankar film neither does justice to a terrific actor like Kamal Haasan nor evokes empathy or interest in any character or storyline.

Indian 2 (Tamil)

  • Main Cast: Kamal Haasan, Siddharth, SJ Suryah, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Rakul Preet Singh, Bobby Simha, Nedumudi Venu, Vivekh, Gulshan Grover and Samuthirakani
  • Director: Shankar
  • Producer: Subaskaran and Udhayanidhi Stalin
  • Cinematography: Ravi Varman

Crafting a sequel is tricky, particularly, for a film like Indian (1996), which attained a cult status over time.

Let’s understand why Indian became a blockbuster, in the first place. It tackled issues that deeply resonated with the common man, articulating their frustrations.

The film featured Senapathy, an ordinary old man (brilliantly played by Kamal Haasan), doing extraordinary things effortlessly—no gimmicks, six-pack abs, or heavy fights. Indian had an engaging screenplay, enjoyable humour, and a compelling background score. Most importantly, there was an arc to the characters.

Indian 2 , on the other hand, has none. It was a colossal disappointment for diehard fans, who spent years speculating about what Shankar had in store.

Chitra Aravindan (Siddharth) heads Barking Dogs, a YouTube channel co-managed by Aarthi (Priya Bhavani Shankar) and Thambesh (Jagan). Their satire-heavy content stars RK Laxman’s Common Man, addressing societal issues, including corruption. Inspired by Indian Thatha, they launch a viral social media campaign for his comeback.

Indian Thatha, last seen in Hong Kong at the end of Indian , is in Taipei. After he returns, he urges the youth to start the battle from their homes.

Shankar’s Indian 2 delves into the aftermath when personal tragedies incite public animosity towards him.

A film sans story

Kamal Haasan in Indian 2

Going into Indian 2 , I knew it wouldn’t match the original’s excitement. The first film was fueled by years of creative passion, while sequels, often, disappoint in comparison.

Nowadays, it’s about balancing storytelling with artistic integrity, amidst the demands of a star-driven narrative. The temptation to compromise is significant in a market that values star power, above all else.

“Indian ku saave kidiyaadhu …” (This Indian is immortal); you don’t find a single line of this dialogue class in Indian 2 . The film goes on for three hours. But it’s all flab. Was the “Calendar Song” necessary, and did it serve any purpose in the plot? Shankar or perhaps Subaskaran should have answers to this.

Indian 2 fails to resonate with me because it prioritised Kamal Haasan’s stardom over the integrity of Senapathy’s character. It is entirely on the actor’s shoulders. But despite his efforts, the film does not meet expectations.

The political commentary in Indian 2 is heavy-handed, often feeling forced and unconvincing. It portrays almost everyone as corrupt except for Senapathy and a group of youngsters.

The disappointingly underwhelming (and numbingly long) Indian 2 prioritises hairstyling and wardrobe over Kamal Haasan’s dedication to plot and character. What’s the point of making a sequel if there’s no story? Don’t suggest waiting for Indian 3 now!

EXCLUSIVE: I don’t subscribe to the idea of pan-Indian cinema, says director Shankar

Unrealistic and chaotic.

SJ Suryah in Indian 2

SJ Suryah in ‘Indian 2’. (Supplied)

However, the film’s true disappointment lies in its excessively cinematic and unrealistic approach, diverging from the organic flow of the plot.

It is almost unbearable to watch Senapathy show off his heroism through stunts. He strips off his shirt, flexes his muscles, and breaks the villains’ bones. But why must Senapathy resort to this nonsense?

He does not have to. He doesn’t need to emulate Jackie Chan to prove he is a hero. I think this was the biggest mistake Indian 2 made.

The second half descends into meaningless chaos. Indian 2 tries to cater to everyone, which isn’t inherently an issue, but the writing is so pathetic that it fails to evoke empathy or interest in any character or storyline.

The presence of social media hashtags and discussions on trending topics does not automatically make a film “updated.”

Why does Shankar struggle to make a simple, entertaining film? Where did all his magic disappear? Why do our stars feel the need to deliver lectures and messages amid action movies?

In Indian , Kamal Haasan skillfully blended his stardom into the character of Senapathy. In contrast, Indian 2 , turns into a vehicle purely focused on Kamal Haasan’s star power.

While such films can be entertaining, they depend on a strong antagonist with clear motivations, effective use of memorable music, and clever references to earlier parts of the original. A never-ending scene features Kamal Haasan on an electric unicycle, jumping walls, and fighting villains without sustaining a single scratch. Come on, he’s Senapathy, not Superman!

Indian 2 prioritises action over plot. The days of an action hero enhancing the story are gone; now, plots are crafted to justify the male lead’s heroism.

Kamal Haasan’s prosthetics look cakey and unsettling, but the bigger issue is the writing. The makers have turned Indian into a joke. That’s what the sequel has truly accomplished—they’ve diminished the integrity of the Indian universe to a mere punchline.

Bobby Simha and the late actor Vivekh in a still from the Shankar film

Watching Indian 2 felt like mindlessly flipping through pages of a book, and then, what the heck!

Indian 2 is one of those films where you’re excited about the plot when you hear about it. But then, you watch the movie and realise otherwise. It doesn’t do justice to a terrific actor like Kamal Haasan. It is a sequel no one asked for.

A problematic scene shows Senapathy entering the villain’s bedroom and using varma kalai to make him act effeminate.

What about the depiction of mocking a transgender person’s gestures and mannerisms in the screenplay? Sadly, Shankar did it in Vikram’s I (2015), and does it again, in Indian 2 . We don’t learn and evolve. Do we?

Indian 2 is perhaps Shankar’s weakest film, resembling a three-hour WhatsApp forward on corruption across sectors, addressing issues in other states while notably sidestepping commentary on Tamil Nadu, for obvious reasons.

The handful of good things? I particularly enjoyed the set designs and the way some of the scenes were staged and lit.

Siddharth, Priya Bhavani Shankar, and Samuthirakani were aptly cast. However, the other actors, including the late versatile comedian Vivekh, failed to leave an impact.

And, only Shankar knows why he chose to cast SJ Suryah, as a one-note villain, decked up in all gold. To be honest, Indian 2 does not need someone like Suryah. The actor has nothing to do in the film than just to roll his eyes occasionally.

Indian 2 cleverly incorporates AR Rahman’s original score, enhancing some of the film’s standout moments. I’d rather not discuss how jarring the songs and Anirudh Ravichander’s intrusive background score were.

The fact that Shankar promises you Indian 3 just as you are about to flee is beyond comprehension.

A word of caution to those directors planning sequels: Please ensure your films do not diminish the respect for the original.

From director Pradeep Ranganathan comes a rom-com starring Ivana, Pradeep Ranganathan, Akshaya Udayakumar, Yogi Babu, and Sathyaraj. All four actors in the movie have been given enough space, which makes the film even more special. ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ was shot in Delhi, Goa, and Chennai by the much-appreciated debutante director Desingh Periyasamy. The entertainer does not come across as preachy, nor does it hold guilt over any of the characters for what they have done. 2. Sila Samayangalil (2016)

indian tamil movie review

Also known as ‘Sometimes,’ this film narrates an unusual story of seven strangers who go to a clinic to get tested for AIDS and their anxiety as they learn that one of them is infected. It is human nature to be curious and to imagine possibilities or an alternative reality. As each of the characters reveals their story through conversations varying in-depth, we start to empathize with the characters and what they are going through. The film also highlights the stigma that surrounds AIDS and how it affects people, whether they have it or not. This is shown tactfully as the characters do not have inhibitions judging one another, although they are all standing in the same spot. The entire film is set in the waiting lounge of a clinic; therefore, the portrayal of the characters and the strength of storytelling carry the movie on its shoulders. You may watch ‘Sila Samayangalil’ here .

Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 Ending Explained & Spoilers

By Aditi Rathi

After a long wait of 28 years, Kamal Haasan returned to his beloved Indian film franchise. The actor took on a dual role in the 1996 movie and sent the viewers a message about honesty and justice. As almost three decades have gone by, his vigilante character of Senapathy returned to the silver screens and left everyone amazed.

Senapathy, who is now about 106 years old, is back to teach a harsh lesson to the corrupt officials of the country. However, once again, his method of bringing peace to society is controversial. Furthermore, he has to bear its consequences. Besides Haasan, the movie also stars Siddharth, SJ Suryah, Rakul Preet Singh, Priya Bhavani Shankar, and a cameo by Kajal Aggarwal.

Indian 2 ending & spoilers

Despite the massive buzz around the movie, it received mixed reviews from the audience. After its theatrical run, the movie has now arrived on Netflix . Per the streaming service, its synopsis reads, “As corruption becomes rampant in the country, a group of vloggers urges freedom fighter-turned-vigilante Senapathy to return to finish his mission.”

An explanation of Indian 2’s ending with spoilers is below.

Why does Senapathy return to action?

Indian 2 begins with the introduction of Chitra Aravindhan (played by Siddharth) and his friends, who run a YouTube channel named Barking Dogs in Chennai. They aim to expose the corrupt officials of the country, but when a woman kills herself due to the authorities, they seek more power to raise their voice against them. As a result, they call for Senapathy by beginning a campaign titled ‘Come Back Indian.’

It is then revealed that Senapathy has been running a school for Varma Kalai in Taipei. Despite having police on an active lookout for him, Senapathy returns to India and begins hunting for corrupt officials. He even addresses the audience and asks them to check if their family members are also corrupt.

In a turn of events in the movie , Chitra learns that his father, Varadharajan, who works for the Anti-Corruption and Vigilance Commission, is corrupt. He even realizes how the woman committed suicide due to his father. As a result, he reports him to the anti-corruption and vigilance team and gets him arrested. However, Chitra’s mother, ridiculed by shame, blames him for his father’s arrest and takes her own life.

This makes him turn against Senapathy, and he begins another campaign titled ‘Go Back Indian.’

In the end, Senapathy is attacked by a crowd at a metro station. He somehow escapes it using his skills in Varma Kalai. Furthermore, when Pramod and Elango try to capture him, they become victims of his Varma Kalai. Pramod is left paralyzed, and only Senapathy can cure him. Senapathy demands his freedom in return, and the court agrees. He then flees and promises to return.

Indian 2 end credits scene explained

In the end credits scene of Indian 2, Senapathy is seen talking about his parents, Veerasekaran Balram and Dakshayini. He reveals that his parents were also freedom fighters who fought against the British in the 1980s. It is further confirmed that the story of Senapathy’s parents will be explored in Indian 3. More updates on the upcoming movie are awaited.

Anti Indian movie review: A scathing satire that doesn't take sides

Not just fortune, even Tamil audiences, it seems, favour the bold. Irrespective of content quality, anything fearless—be it an intimate romantic scene or expletive dialogues—is usually met with praise. It’s in such brazenness that Anti Indian, the directorial debut of YouTuber C Elamaran, stands out. It revels in its audacity, even at the cost of being oversimplified. There is no ‘kuriyeedu’ here; everything is straightforward and brazen.

The film opens with a close-up of the face of Basha (Elemaran), who has been murdered by unknown people for unknown reasons. The film or the characters don’t care about finding the culprits. This is intentional and leaves us with a lot to ponder about. After a long delay, his brother-in-law Ezhumalai (Jayaraj), a local upcoming politician, gets the body for burial. ‘Ezhumalai’ as a brother-in-law to ‘Basha’? That’s because their mother is a Hindu while the father is a Muslim. Due to the mixed religious identity, his body gets neither accepted in a Muslim burial ground nor a Hindu crematory ground.

Parallelly, we see how the Chief Minister (Radha Ravi) and the police department are preparing for an upcoming by-election, which they are most likely to lose. The opposition has the upper hand, and only superstar actor ‘Kabali’ can tilt the scale. So, the CM and the police have to come up with a plan to either win or stop the election altogether. The sequences involving the CM and the police officials create a sense of unease, given that they discuss sinister plans very casually. When the case of Basha’s body gets media attention, these men in power plan to use it for their benefit.

Since the Jallikattu protest of 2017, Tamil cinema has shown quite a bit of interest in the idea of political conspiracy and police brutality. Yet, most films have done so with a sense of caution. Even the recent blockbuster Maanaadu focussed more on the entertainment and less on such social issues. This is where Anti Indian distinguishes itself from the rest. It doesn’t mince words and is always in your face. Ezhumalai bears a saffron tilak on his head. His party leader is named Raja. And yet, the film is careful not to take sides. It paints Hindus, Muslims, Christians, media, police, and everyone in the film with the same brush.

The problem then is, what’s really the voice of the director? Perhaps, the nameless, black-clad character (Ghilli Maran), who takes digs at everyone, is the voice? He wanders around asking questions, like the one he poses to Ezhumalai: “How are all the leaders in your party fair while the followers are dark?” However, I wondered why this film steered clear of caste issues. Surely, this is a conscious decision from a filmmaker, who makes every other issue a target.

The craft is straightforward. With a limited budget, Maran has pulled off a decent film that isn’t worried about nuances. No aesthetic brilliance, no compositions that draw attention. It may be technically inferior, but the content makes up for this. The film only cares about its story, and I liked how a lot of it is shown and not told. There are expositions, sure, but they are decently executed. For instance, the idea of juxtaposing the impromptu gaana singing session at the funeral, while police and politicians devise evil plans is well done. It reminded me of Kaala’s climax—maybe it was supposed to. However, there are tonal inconsistencies. Predominantly, the film tries to be a satire, but at times, it does turn sober and realistic. At the end, it left me feeling admiration for the loudness and the boldness of its voice.

As a YouTuber, Maran has been notorious for his impertinent take on films, directors, and actors. As a filmmaker, he has taken on men of all religions and all types of politics… and ultimately, those who wield power. Perhaps the film’s greatest value lies in setting a new benchmark when it comes to freedom of expression in Tamil cinema.

Andhagan Review:

Andhagan Review Prashanth

Andhagan Review Prashanth

Andhagan Movie Review: An effective star cast lights up this faithful remake

Andhagan ( 3 / 5).

Tributes and meta-references about actors are not uncommon in films. In  Andhagan , the official remake of Sriram Raghavan’s Andhadhun (2018), the most interesting tributes come along for actor Karthik, who plays himself in the film. He is married to Simi (a brilliant Simran), who we are told loves his film songs. His first entry comes with ‘ Panivizhum Malarvanam ’ song and then we get glimpses from his yesteryear hit Mouna Raagam and then another classic song ‘ Keeravani ’. We also get a passing reference to  Jeans when we are introduced to Yogi Babu’s character as he worships Aishwarya Rai. Such personal touches elevate a remake, make it relevant to its audience, and stand out from its predecessor.

Cast: Prashanth, Simran, Karthik, Priya Anand, Samuthirakani, Vanitha Vijaykumar, Manobala, Urvashi, Yogi Babu and Leela Samson Direction: Thiyagarajan In  Andhagan , Krish (Prashanth) is a blind pianist who is caught as a witness to a high-profile murder and the web of problems that come with it. Despite the lack of surprises,  Andhagan  holds on to its strongest feature—a solid screenplay. It traverses the story as a scene-by-scene remake with an experienced cast who come together and deliver each scene effectively. It has been a long time since we’ve seen Prashanth at his best and the actor slips into his character comfortably, playing a flustered pianist struggling to navigate a dark world. Simran who holds the fort as Simi, who brilliantly shows both the gritty and vulnerable side of her character.

Even actors with limited screen time deliver memorable performances. Urvashi, who plays Sarasu  akka  and Yogi Babu who plays Murali, pivot the plot to a crucial point that changes the entire second half. Samuthirakani as Manohar proves his range as he shifts from an angry and ruthless policeman at work to a loving husband at home. It is hard not to chuckle at the tom-and-jerry-like dynamic between the husband and wife.

Sriram Raghavan has a knack for including an underlying symphony in his storylines. There is always a melancholy travelling parallelly through the screenplay that makes it difficult for the audience to root for one particular character. At the same time, you tend to root for all of them. Thiyagarajan masterfully translates similar emotions from script to screen. The film has used Lydian Nadhaswaram's tunes to its strength to get the maximum emotion from any scene.

However,  Andhagan  isn't flawless. For some strange reason, Julie (Priya Anand) is extremely unidimensional. The camera cuts to Simi haphazardly while Julie is delivering a serious dialogue, so we fail to see her emoting well on screen. The black-and-white cat, who almost acts like an unpaid actor in  Andhadhun , could have also added a refreshing and metaphorical touch to  Andhagan  as well, but the makers, unfortunately, miss out on that. The jokes are mostly a mixed bag of very few hits and more misses. As much as we get an interesting world-building into the world of  Andhagan  up until the intermission, the second half jumps the gun and races through its twists and turns. This inconsistency in the pacing somewhat derails the murder mystery.

While the makers still pull off an efficient and faithful remake, the greatest strength of  Andhagan  perhaps lies in the time of its release. Even though the world has changed beyond recognition in six years, the story does not feel outdated, nor do the characters. It surprisingly acts as a refresher to the original, while holding onto Tamil sensibilities wherever necessary. Like the black and white keys in the piano,  Andhagan  plays to the tune of ‘ neenga nallavara kettavara ’ to its strength.

Andhagan movie review: Prashanth and Simran's film is faithful but unengaging remake of Andhadhun

Andhagan movie review: prashanth’s film tries desperately to match andhadhun, which was a smartly crafted black comedy thriller, and falls short..

When Hindi film Andhadhun (The Blind Man) came out in 2018, it was hailed for its intricate screenplay and inspiring performances of Ayushman Khurana, Tabu and Radhika Apte. Tamil actor Prashanth’s father, actor-producer-director Thiagarajan bought the remake rights and had made it as Andhagan. While the movie was complete in 2022, it has taken two years for it to hit theatres. (Also Read: Santhosh Narayanan distances himself from Prashanth’s The Andhagan Anthem: ‘Audio label is also playing blind’ )

Andhagan movie review: Simran, Prashanth, Samuthirakani in a still.

Prashanth essays the role of Krish, a blind piano player, in Andhagan. He lives alone with his cat and plays at a resto bar in the evenings to make his living. It is here that he meets Julie (Priya Anand) and the two become close. Yesteryear actor Karthick (who essays a similar role) is an also a frequent visitor to the bar and he falls in love with Krish’s music. Karthick invites Krish to his place for a private concert for his wedding anniversary to surprise his wife Simi (Simran). Landing up at the actor’s place, Krish finds he is not home and he receives a shock instead. There is a murder that is committed and Krish turns witness. What happens next?

The performances and more

Andhagan is a faithful remake of Andhadhun and director Thiagarajan has followed the script to a T. But having enjoyed the original Hindi film and the performances, the Tamil remake definitely falls short in numerous aspects including the casting and music.

Andhagan was a comeback vehicle for actor Prashanth who has not been seen in Tamil cinema for six years now. The 51-year-old actor who had some good films in his career, like Shankar’s Jeans, hasn’t had any big hits to speak of in the last two decades. In Andhagan, the actor looks jaded and not fresh and youthful which is imperative for the character of a charming piano player. This role was perhaps not what he should have chosen for a comeback though the movie has a good script.

Simran , on the other hand, is perfect as Simi, which was essayed by Tabu in the Hindi version. Priya Anand too is decent as Julie and numerous other characters, like Urvashi, Yogi Babu, Manobala, Leela Samson and Vanitha Vijayakumar, have been thrown to add weight and comic value to the film but this doesn’t do much for it. Yesteryear Tamil star Karthick is a misfit as Simi’s husband and moreover, his dubbing doesn’t match what he’s mouthing on screen which is very distracting. Again, Samuthirakani steps in as a cop - for the umpteenth time in Tamil cinema - and obviously it’s a cakewalk for him.

Music director Santhosh Narayanan is known for his spectacular songs and BGM but in Andhagan the songs are just terrible. Krish is a talented musician and plays at a bar for his livelihood but the songs he sings are tacky to say the least. This was quite unexpected from this talented music director who just gave us the massive Kalki 2898 AD .

Thiagarajan had to turn director for Andhagan after two directors walked out of the project. Having had a template already, it would have been easy to helm this film but Andhagan hasn’t been made exciting for the audience. The Tamil narrative is flat and the twists that come don’t pop on screen but play out very matter-of-fact for the audience. Had the director taken the script and made some changes to make it more engaging in Tamil it would have helped. The dialogues by Pattukotai Prabhakar also don’t evoke any emotions in the audience as they watch Krish’s character go through an emotional roller coaster from happiness to shock to fear.

Andhadhun was a smartly crafted black comedy thriller by Sriram Raghavan that kept you guessing and on the edge of your seat. Prashanth’s Andhagan tries desperately to match the original but falls short.

Andhagan Review:

Andhagan Review

Andhagan Review

Andhagan Review

Andhagan Review

  17. Indian 2 Tamil movie review

Indian 2 prioritises action over plot. The days of an action hero enhancing the story are gone; now, plots are crafted to justify the male lead's heroism. Kamal Haasan's prosthetics look cakey and unsettling, but the bigger issue is the writing. The makers have turned Indian into a joke.
