Position: Research Assistant, Infectious Diseases (PASC)       

Location: Boston, MA

Schedule: 40 hours per week, Hybrid

POSITION SUMMARY :

The Research Assistant I will conduct follow-up visits for study participants enrolled in the long COVID study at Boston Medical collecting samples from acute and recovered COVID-19 patients. The RA will be responsible for scheduling study visits, consenting patients, conducting study procedures, collecting and reviewing data collection forms, and entering accurate data into a database in an efficient manner. Will assist with the preparation of IRB applications and reviews, data extraction from medical records, document maintenance and protocol adherence, perform clerical duties such as supply inventorying and ordering, and track study participant reimbursement. The Research Assistant will support any study procedures (e.g., phlebotomy, physical exams, etc.) in the General Clinical Research Unit (GCRU).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts and maintains follow-up activities for subjects participating in post-acute sequalae of SARS-CoV2 (PASC)/long COVID study, following approved research methodologies.
  • Schedules appointments of study participants in GCRU clinic space, following up with over-the-phone pre-visit questionnaires, email reminders, e-consents, etc. Finishes surveys and questionnaires with patients, tracking procedures that patients will do remotely and ensuring completion/accuracy.
  • Reviews the data collection forms for each participant for completion and quality. Extracts clinical data related to study from medical records where appropriate. Performs data collection and entry into a REDCap database; maintains clear, concise, accurate and legible records and responds to data queries as needed.
  • Performs clinical assistance, working closely with GCRU team, including but not limited to collection of NP/OP, blood, sputum, urine, and stool samples.
  • Assists with preparation of sample collection kits for enrolled participants as necessary, including sample labels. Adheres with maintenance of deidentified patient data and sample collection as required.
  • Maintains database of participant reimbursement for study participation (tracking and sending ClinCards, etc.).

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Performs office-related duties such as storing study office documents and confidential study materials, scanning, filing, photocopying, collating materials, maintaining the update of study procedure manuals and schedules of events, etc.
  • Assists in maintaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals and correspondence, including amendments and renewals as necessary. Adheres to human subjects regulatory requirements throughout the course of the study.
  • Tracks study supply inventory to obtain approvals for and proceed with ordering necessary study clinical supplies and additional supplies.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Masters in related field (public health or other related science fields) preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience recruiting subjects with an understanding of the ethical and technical conduct of research preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Excellent oral (including English) and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills, especially Spanish, is desirable.
  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of social, racial and ethnic populations.
  • Proficiency with REDCap data entry and maintenance, as well as Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat/Reader, web browsers, and statistical software.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including strong attention to detail and ability to manage time effectively.

This position is grant-funded. There may be opportunity beyond this grant funding for position integration into ongoing operations.

The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education . An entry level role that applies broad theoretical job knowledge typically obtained through advanced education . May require the following proficiency : work is closely supervised, problems faced are not typically difficult or complex, and explains facts, policies and practices related to job area.

Under the supervision and direction of the Principal investigator, this position conducts research activities which include, but are not limited to, review ing and summar izing literature, testing, data preparation and analysis, and assisting with the preparation of manuscripts and presentations.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Enrolled in a n Education al Related Degree program, relevant to research .

Preferred Qualifications:

1. One (1) year of research experience.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list . Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Facilitates data collection and ensuring that all data is collected in a timely fashion, which includes identifying missing data and implementing data checks, as well as generation of reports.

2. Performs tasks which may require familiarity with a variety of protocols, techniques and equipment .

3. Maintains and updates records, reports and files as required .

4. Assists with preparation of abstracts, presentations, and publications as needed.

5. Attends meetings as required , may be asked to take minutes.

6. Performs literature searches either relevant to the project(s) , else in pursuit of new techniques/ideas to expand relevant basic knowledge.

7. Schedules meetings or study visits, as well as calendar maintenance. Logs work performed.

8. Assists with the collection, storage, and shipping of biological samples.

9. Maintains and update s records in accordance with IRB/WIRB and sponsor requirements.

10. Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working group's achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.

1. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
