The earliest record of the cover letter for employment dates back to the 1950s according to The Atlantic, and has been used ever since as an addition to resumes, for candidates to prove to potential employers their desire and eligibility for posted roles. In recent years, however, especially since the post-pandemic unemployment upheaval, the choice of whether or not to include cover letters as part of the job application process has been a topic of contentious debate, and has left most candidates confused as to whether or not to include them, especially if the employer has not specifically requested them.

In a recent LinkedIn poll I conducted, more than 70% of respondents (a mix of recruiters, hiring managers, and candidates) voted that cover letters are no longer necessary as part of the shortlisting process. However, across the Internet, there were others who advocated its use, provided the right conditions were met.

The question remains, Should we write cover letters for jobs, even if they're not mandated in the application process?

When cover letters are needed

Emily Meekins , CEO and Founder of talent consultancy Workstrat, points out that she rarely reviews cover letters. "85% of the time, I can learn enough from your resume and LinkedIn profile. The application/interview process is time-consuming enough without a cover letter. I'd prefer candidates save their time and reapply it to other areas of their search." However, Meekins adds that she would look at a cover letter if she is on the fence and needs more information to help make an informed decision, or to check for quality of writing and communication skills.

I spoke with Yulia Saf , Founder and CEO of MissTourist.com, who has hired and led a team of up to 12 employees remotely, and asked her to share her experiences and insights on this topic. Saf revealed that cover letters have significantly impacted her decision to hire candidates on several occasions, noting that "candidates who include a persuasive cover letter often stand out during the shortlisting phase, as it provides insight into their passion and determination for the role."

Maurizio Petrone , founder of the remote-first digital media start-up MustReadQuotes.com, has been hiring talent for over 15 years, and highlights that from his experience, "cover letters have played an essential element in hiring decisions, even when we didn't specifically request them. Out of the hundreds of candidates we shortlisted over the past five years, about 70% included cover letters in their applications. These letters helped shed light on their motivations and gave a better insight into their soft skills - things often not immediately evident in resumes."

Cover letters are a fantastic way to explore beyond the confines of one's resume and tell a compelling narrative about your career journey, motivations and aspirations for the job, and even transferable skills, especially for those facing perceived barriers in the workplace. This makes it an excellent choice for those making a career pivot or transition.

As Thomas Codevilla , business attorney, Co-Founder and hiring manager at SK&S Law Group points out, "A well-written cover letter allows candidates to tell a compelling narrative about their experiences and how they can uniquely contribute to our organization. On the hiring side, I know that ATS often play a role in screening applications. What many candidates might not realize is that incorporating relevant keywords from the job posting into their cover letters can significantly improve their chances of getting past this initial screening stage.

"As a recruiter, I appreciate it when candidates address their cover letters to a specific individual or mention a mutual connection within the company. It not only shows that they've done their research but also increases the likelihood that their application will catch my attention.

"A cover letter gives candidates the opportunity to address any potential red flags in their resume, such as employment gaps or career changes. When a candidate proactively explains these issues, it shows their transparency and willingness to provide context, which can positively influence my perception of their application."

Best practice when crafting your cover letter

While cover letters are a great way to demonstrate your value to a potential employer, you should always ensure that it actually delivers real value and is not a mere repetition of your resume, HR generalist Mary Pizana of personal injury law firm Herrman and Herrman cautions.

Kirsty Barden , Head of Business Development at MDS, a talent acquisition company with 37 years in the business, highlights some best practices to remember when writing up a cover letter:

Customise each cover letter

"Tailor your cover letter for each specific application and company. Address the hiring manager or recruiter by name if possible and demonstrate your knowledge of the company and the role you're applying for."

Highlight relevant experiences and skills

"Emphasise the experiences and skills from your CV that directly relate to the job description and requirements. Use specific examples to demonstrate your capabilities."

Showcase your passion

"Express genuine enthusiasm for the company and the opportunity. Explain why you are interested in the role and how it aligns with your career goals."

Keep it concise and focused

"A cover letter should be concise, typically one page. Avoid unnecessary details and maintain a clear focus on the key points you want to convey."

Be professional and error-free

"Pay close attention to grammar, spelling, and formatting. A well-written and error-free cover letter demonstrates attention to detail and professionalism."

Demonstrate cultural fit

"Highlight your alignment with the company's values and culture. Show that you are a team player and can thrive within the organization's environment."

"Conclude the cover letter by expressing your interest in further discussing your qualifications and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to apply."

Executive Cleaning Services Vice President Thomas Giarraputo recommends candidates use Venn diagrams when beginning to craft their cover letter. "Telling stories from your career is an excellent way to demonstrate your skills and give hiring managers a glimpse of your demeanor and work style.

"Always refer to the position's requirements in the job description when searching for appropriate anecdotes to share. It is also beneficial to conduct additional online investigation on the company to gain a sense of its culture. Before writing your cover letter, compare your talents to the position's requirements.

"Utilizing Venn diagrams can be useful for generating ideas and determining which competencies and experiences to highlight. After creating this diagram and identifying what belongs in both circles, overlapping topics will guide and inspire the content of your cover letter."

When cover letters should not be used

On the flip side, Sam Greinetz , Recruiting Partner at Signed Talent, points out that the recruitment industry has witnessed a significant shift over the past decade, with hundreds of candidates applying for one position where there were only 10-15 a few years ago, and certain industries which rely more on hard skills, such as the tech industry, do not have the capacity for hiring managers and recruiters to read every cover letter sent through.

Greinetz recommends trying a different approach to sending in your cover letter. "Rather than a cover letter, if someone is especially interested in a role, they are better off reaching out to the recruiter or hiring manager directly either via email or on Linkedin to reiterate their excitement. That message can be similar to what a cover letter would include and will allow them to stick out in a crowded applicant pool. Show that you've done some homework, personalize it, talk about the team, product, etc. and don't be afraid to follow-up after a few days if you haven't heard anything."

Anthony Allen , VP of Recruiting at Supply Chain Talent Advisors, states that while he agrees that most recruiters don't have the time to read cover letters, if one is to be written, "the candidate must personalize and tailor the cover letter. A generic, one-size-fits-all cover letter is easy to spot and often disregarded. To stand out, research the company and the role, and tailor your cover letter accordingly. Mention how your skills and experiences align with the job requirements and the company's goals. By doing this, you show the hiring manager that you understand their needs and can bring specific value to the position. This level of personalization is what can make a cover letter impactful, even in situations where its importance might be diminishing."

So what does all of this mean for job seekers?

In a nutshell:

  • When applying for a job directly to an employer, use a cover letter that is well-personalized, tells impactful career stories, conveys your motivations for the role, and speaks to why you want to work for that particular employer. Demonstrate that you understand their pain-points, clients, and values, and that their mission and values align with yours.
  • Think creatively of other ways to include a cover letter approach, such as sending an email or LinkedIn InMail to the hiring manager directly.
  • Ensure your cover letter is not a repetition of your resume.
  • Cover letters are best used when facing barriers such as career gaps, career transitions, lack of experience, or to increase competitive edge, especially for senior level roles.
  • If applying for technical roles or applying directly through recruitment agencies, consider leaving the cover letter out altogether so as not to waste your time. Also take time to research if the industry you are entering or applying for roles in, typically reviews cover letters. After all, you don't want to waste your time or that of the recruiter/hiring manager.

Let’s break them down:

  • Header with contact details. The top of your cover letter should include a designated header where you can input your contact information, such as your full name, email address, phone number, address, and links to any relevant social media. Make sure these details match your resume and double-check for any typos.

You should also keep in mind that talking about salary expectations so early on can even put you at a disadvantage in potential salary negotiations . If you mention a high number too early on, the hiring manager might reject your application before you even make it past the initial screening. But if you go too low, you could undervalue yourself.

We get it; you want to impress the hiring manager. But exaggerating or falsifying information to make yourself look like the coolest candidate ever can easily backfire.

On one hand, the hiring manager is probably going to catch onto you while reading your cover letter. They’re going to notice the inconsistencies you didn’t pay attention to, and they simply won’t call you.

But it could be even worse. You could land an interview, only to have the hiring manager discover the truth face to face. Your professional reputation could suffer some serious damage, beyond just an awkward interaction during the interview.

Trust us – lying isn’t worth it. You’re capable of writing a standout cover letter without exaggerating anything you can’t back up.

#6. Grammatical Mistakes

You should always proofread your cover letter before submitting it with your job application.

However, don’t get fooled by these statistics. While your resume may be considered more important during the hiring process, including a well-written cover letter can increase your chances of landing a job.

If the name of the hiring manager isn't written in the job posting, research their name and contact information online. The first paragraph is the perfect place to shortly explain why the job seems exciting to you and why you’re the right person for it .  You can also compliment the company or name a mutual acquaintance who referred you.

Try to answer these questions: 1. What did you do at a previous position that gave you relevant experience?  2. How could this experience help the new company grow? 3. Which of the projects you have worked on would benefit their business? 4. Which of your skills make you well-equipped for the position?  5. Do any of these skills give you an edge over other candidates?

The following questions should help you : What excites you about the idea of working at this company? How do the company goals align with your own? What do you hope to gain and learn from working there?

In the cover letter closing paragraph : reiterate that your experience and enthusiasm make you a great candidate, add a confident call to action, express gratitude, and always use a formal sign-off.

Step 1: Prepare and do some research 

Knowledge is power. Before you begin writing:

  • Find out more about the company and the position you're applying for. Spend some time on the company’s website, its executives’ Twitter feeds, and employee profiles on LinkedIn. Placed at the very beginning of your cover letter, the header is the place where you should include your contact information and the contact information of the company.

At the left side of the page include the information based on which you can be reached by the recruiter. 

Here, make sure to include: 

  • your full name
  • your email address
  • phone number

Optionally, you can also add:

  • your professional title
  • address (if it vaguely matches the location of the job offer)
  • current date

The top right side of the page is reserved for company-related information. Here, you should put: 

  • the manager’s or recruiter’s name (if available)
  • job title

Step 3: Write a strong cover letter headline

When you’re browsing the web, what articles usually catch your attention? Those with great headlines, of course! 

The same applies to cover letter headlines.

Start by paying attention to the headlines around you — especially in tabloids and websites like Buzzfeed (Is Buzzfeed still a thing? How very 2010s of me). These are usually designed to stir up your interest and make it impossible to not click through. 

Notice how they use numbers, questions, and interesting adjectives to promise the reader to learn something valuable.

And you can do the same in your cover letter.

When in doubt, try to use this formula: Number or Trigger word + Adjective + Keyword + Promise. 

The result can look something like this: 

  • 3 Reasons Why I’m An Excellent Fit For [Job Position]
  • Are You Still Looking To Fill The Position Of [Job Position]? This Is Why I Believe I’m Exactly Who You’re Looking For
  • 5 Ways I Can Help You Improve Your Company’s [insert a position-related keyword]

Finally, don’t forget to adjust your header to the company’s level of formality and put your headline in the subject of the email.

Step 4: Use the correct form of greeting

In this time and age, there’s no excuse for using “To Whom It May Concern.”  

If the name of the hiring manager isn't written in the job posting, you’re expected to research their name and contact information online. For example, look at the company's page or LinkedIn. 

Once you have their name, feel free to go for a personalized greeting: 

“Dear [first name]” or “Dear Mr./Mrs. [last name]” 

Honorifics (e.g. Mr., Mrs., Ms .) are more appropriate if the company’s culture is formal. 

And if you cannot find the recruiter’s name, it's okay to go for a generic: 

“Dear Hiring Manager”, or “Dear Recruitment Officer”

Alternatively, you can address the letter to the whole company team or the HR department. In this case, your greeting should look like this: 

“Dear [name of the company/department] Team” or “Dear Human Resources”

Step 5: First paragraph: Introduce yourself with a BANG!

The best way to start a cover letter is to open strong. The first impression matters the most and busy recruiters often have a chance to properly dive into only a few selected cover letters. 

So if you make your first paragraph captivating, chances are that your letter will be one of the lucky ones that actually end up being read. 

In fact, the first paragraph is the perfect place to shortly explain why the job seems exciting to you and why you’re the right person for it. 

While most people begin their letters with “I’m applying for the position X I saw in Y place,” it's a waste of space. 

Instead, open with a sentence like this:

“I’m a content marketing professional with more than 5 years of experience and I’d love to bring my ability and passion to your team.”

In the first paragraph, you can also:

  • Compliment the company. Show that you know details about the company and you’re approaching it for a reason. For example, demonstrate appreciation for what the company does. Not only will this flatter them, but it will also provide them with insight into who you are.
  • Name a mutual acquaintance if you can. This is sometimes called a “magic bullet,” as it’s the one thing that will assure the hiring manager reads your cover letter until the end. 

However, limit the introduction to 1-3 sentences. This isn’t the place to go into detail about what makes you ideal for the role — save that for the second and third paragraphs. 

Step 6: Second paragraph: Explain why you’re a great fit for the company

The second paragraph is the place where you should sell yourself and your experience.  

Here, write a short summary of your career, skills and accomplishments, tailored to fit what the company is looking for. 

You already did your research, so now it's time to ask yourself these questions and try to address them in your cover letter:

  • What did you do at a previous position that gave you relevant experience? 
  • How could this experience help the new company grow?
  • Which of the projects you have worked on would benefit their business?
  • Which of your skills make you well-equipped for the position? 
  • Do any of these skills give you an edge over other candidates?

After you’ve picked the most relevant accomplishments, put them at the start of your letter. 

However, when talking about them, avoid sounding like you’re bragging. The best way of doing this is to focus on your experiences rather than yourself . Ideally, support your claims with concrete examples.

Also, mention any other additional relevant hard skills or knowledge areas they’re looking for, as well as any qualifications.

Finally, the second paragraph is the perfect place for showing that you’ve done your research. Demonstrate that you’re familiar with some of the challenges that the company faces and present how you can help them.

Step 7: Third paragraph: Explain why the company is a great fit for you 

In this paragraph, you want to show that you’re serious about developing your career at this new company. And good companies want to know why they appeal to you and how will your professional relationship be mutually beneficial. 

Consider addressing the following questions:

  • What excites you about the idea of working at this company?
  • How do the company goals align with your own?
  • What do you hope to gain and learn from working there?

For example, you can say something like this: “I've seen on your website that you heavily focus on cryptocurrency projects. As a cryptocurrency enthusiast, I would love to join your team”.  

However, don’t go overboard with flattery and stay professional. 

Also, don’t say anything that isn't true or you don’t mean it, as it will probably come up again in the later stages of the application process.

Step 8: Closing paragraph: Finish strong and stay in touch

Now that you’ve nailed the main part of your cover letter, you also want to finish strong. This way, the recruiter will remember you in a good light. But how do you achieve that? 

  • Reiterate that your experience and enthusiasm make you a great candidate. This is to emphasize the two main points from the previous paragraphs. Do this in one or two sentences, not more. 
  • Add a confident call to action. In a sentence or two, you should suggest the next steps. Something like “ I would love the opportunity to meet with you and discuss the value I can bring to [company]."
  • Express gratitude. Simply thank them for their time and for considering your application.
  • Always use a formal sign-off. Something like “ Sincerely , Best wishes , or Respectfully” . Finish by typing out your full name. 

Step 9: How do you send a cover letter?

I can’t stress this enough — unless it's specifically required to attach the cover letter to the body of the email,  consider not sending your cover letter as a document attached to your email. 

Instead, put it inside the body of the email . The email itself is now your cover letter! This way the recruiter won't ignore it.

However, remember that hiring managers receive hundreds of emails a day. So if you want your email to get read, it's the subject line that's likely to play the most important part. 

As we've advised before, if you have a good resume headline, simply put it in the email subject. 

However, if you’re unhappy with the result, you have other options, too.

What if you're told to NOT submit a cover letter? 

Today, many companies are using online application systems that discourage applicants from attaching a cover letter. 

Instead, they have their own application systems where in different sections you're required to fill in the information you would normally place in your cover letter.  

If this is the case, just work with the format they gave you.

In other words, include the same information that you'd normally have in your cover letter but place it in the correct sections. 

And don’t forget to follow the cover letter principles: 

  • explain why you're the right candidate;
  • make it clear that you've researched the company well;
  • indicate in what way you'd be an asset;
  • mention your biggest past achievements.

Because no matter the format, you're still expected to present your skills and convey enthusiasm about the job.

Alternatively, you can also try to find a relevant manager or a recruiter online (either on the company pages or LinkedIn) to whom you can send a brief follow-up email with an attached cover letter.

  • Keep it short. Limit your cover letter to three to four paragraphs and a maximum of one page. Hiring managers are busy people who often don't have time for reading long texts.
  • Keep it clean and easy on the eye. Take a look at how this article is written. It’s replete with short paragraphs, sentences typed in bold letters, bullet points, and numbers. All of these make reading and searching for specific information easier. So, never send a letter that looks like an unreadable wall of text. The easiest way to achieve a sleek cover letter design is to use a pre-formatted cover letter template . 
  • Don’t risk being funny if it ’ s a company with a formal work culture. Poorly executed humor will hurt your chances rather than help. Being direct and dynamic is a much surer way to catch the recruiter’s attention than a number of jokes. On the other, if the company is smaller or known for its creative products, being original may in fact help your chances! 
  • Show, don’t tell. Usually, there’s no point in saying you’re “a dependable hard worker” or “a creative thinker.” Why should anyone believe such generic statements? Instead, offer an example of how these qualities helped you achieve something in the past.
  • Never write the same letter twice. A cover letter should always be tailored to a specific job application. Remember the previous sections? You’ve made a great effort to research the company and its hiring managers, so you’ve written your cover letter accordingly. This is a process you need to repeat with every application (ugh, I know). 
  • Check for typos. This goes without saying but make 100% sure your cover letter is without typos. There’s no reason to believe you're competent if you can't even type without errors. Moreover, typos automatically reveal almost criminal carelessness on your part, since every text editor nowadays has a spellchecking feature. 
  • Don't use any buzzwords. Your cover letter needs to be authentic and persuasive — and buzzwords are neither. If anything, they simply give the impression of you being someone who's just trying to fit a skewed idea of what an ideal corporate employee should be. Instead, focus on using relevant keywords from job descriptions.

When you have a task to complete, it helps to know what the end product should look like. It's especially true when you’re doing something you might find difficult—like writing a cover letter . How long should it be? What information do you need to include?

Hiring managers and recruiters are busy people, so you don’t want to disqualify yourself by writing a cover letter that’s too long. But you do want to make sure your cover letter is effective. “The cover letter should serve as an introduction to your resume, highlighting why you’re interested in the position, what you’re looking for in your next role, and how you can potentially add value to the position or company,” says Muse career coach Yolanda Owens , who has over 20 years of recruiting experience. 

So how much space do you have to do all that? And how can you make the best use of that space?

How long should a cover letter be?

The ideal cover letter length is:

  • Less than one page
  • Three to five paragraphs
  • Less than 400 words

At least that’s the approximate consensus we came to based on research and input from a few experts who have worked as hiring managers, recruiters, or both.

If this feels short, “Keep in mind that the cover letter is not a tell-all of everything you've done,” says Muse coach Emily Liou , a recruiter and HR professional. “You just want enough to position yourself as a fit and to pique the curiosity of the reader.” You don’t need pages and pages to do that.

In a survey of 205 HR professionals, ResumeLab found that 42% of respondents preferred cover letters between half and one page and 40% preferred cover letters that were less than half a page. Only 18% said they preferred cover letters longer than one page. Muse coach Steven Davis , a technical recruiter, advocates for a cover letter that “can be comfortably read in less than a minute.”

How do you write a cover letter that's just the right length?

Here are a few tips that'll get your cover letter to the ideal length:

1. Pay attention to your structure.

You may remember the five-paragraph essay from school: introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion paragraph. Cover letters are structured similarly.

Basically, you should lay out your cover letter like this:

  • Introduction (one paragraph): Your cover letter opening should be original and creative to draw your reader in. It should show your connections to the employer and your interest and excitement for the position, Liou says. You might also use this paragraph to explain that you’re making a career pivot or re-entering the workforce after an employment gap .
  • Body (one to three paragraphs): Your body paragraphs should focus on the ways you can help the organization or team, Owens says. Talk about what skills and experience you bring to the company, and back up what you’re saying with past examples—but keep them concise.
  • Conclusion (one paragraph): Your conclusion should be “a final paragraph thanking the reader for their time and reiterating your interest,” Owens says.

2. Figure out what matters to the employer.

“This is a great time to dissect what is most important to this position,” Liou says, so you can focus your cover letter on what your prospective employer cares about most. Go back to the job description and read it thoroughly. What’s listed first and what’s repeated? From there, Davis says, you should be able to identify the top skills and experiences they’re looking for.

Then, think about what in your background most exemplifies these qualifications—with an emphasis on situations where you’ve made an impact for your past employers, Liou says. These are the experiences you should recount in your cover letter.

3. Use concise examples to pique your readers’ interest.

Davis suggests using the “the STAR format without any details to create curiosity and motivate the interviewer to review the resume.” If you’re unfamiliar, the STAR method is a way of telling stories in an interview where you make sure that you hit on the situation, task, action, and result of the experience you’re recounting. Using a compact version of the STAR method in your cover letter will help show the impact you’ve had in past roles and how without adding too much length. So you might write something like:

“When my last company redesigned their website, I took the lead on layout, and by working as a constant liaison between our product team and our users, I helped produce a website that our users found 50% more intuitive and drew 33% more repeat users.”

4. Go beyond your resume—without regurgitating it.

“The cover letter should be a supplemental piece to your resume, not a summary,” Owens says. So don’t waste space regurgitating other parts of your application. “Use the cover letter to tell the employer what you want them to know about you that’s not on your resume,” or anywhere else, Owens says.

Focus your precious page or less on highlighting your relevant achievements and explicitly connecting your resume to the position. Don’t worry about including all of the context and details about your past jobs. For anything you talk about in a cover letter, your resume can “continue your narrative—filling in the remaining details of the where, when, and what of your work experiences and history,” Owens says.

5. Consider using bullet points.

And we don’t mean repeating your resume bullet points . We mean using a few bullet points to concisely relay a few key pieces of information that aren’t on your resume, but contribute to your qualifications as a candidate, without taking up too much space.

For example, Owens says you might create a “What I bring to the table” section with three to four bullet points (one or two sentences each). In a section like this, you can touch on a few more disparate topics such as your management or leadership style, pain points you can help your next employer with, or work environments you have experience thriving in, Owens says.

6. Use standard formatting.

Did you ever make your font size a bit larger or choose a slightly wider font to hit a page count on an essay for school? What about widening those margins? Did you ever do the opposite to slip in under a page maximum without having to do another editing pass at 3 a.m.? (Guilty!)

These tactics won’t fly for your cover letter (or your resume for that matter). Instead, stick to standard, easy-to-read formatting. Generally this means:

  • Common fonts like Arial, Helvetica, or Times New Roman
  • Font sizes between 10 and 12 point
  • Margin sizes of about one inch on the top, bottom, and sides
  • Lines that are single spaced (1.15 max) with an additional space between paragraphs if you'd like.

Don’t make your cover letter harder to read by cramming as much onto a page as possible. Also keep in mind that your cover letter often passes through the same applicant tracking system (ATS) that your resume does—so any flashy formatting could trip up the software that parses your application materials.

7. Trim the excess.

If your cover letter is still too long, take another look and trim out anything extra that doesn’t need to be there. Some things to cut include:

  • Content about how much you’d enjoy doing the work, Davis says—beyond what you need to express enthusiasm.
  • Mentions of years of experience: While the job description may call for three years of experience with a CRM (customer relationship management) program, you don’t need to use your cover letter to write a word problem where your six months experience from one internship, three months each from two classes, and two years at your last job equals three years.
  • Extra details in your examples, especially those that are found on your resume or don’t contribute to your strength as a candidate
  • Filtering language: This includes phrases like “I think” and “I feel.” You don’t “believe you can help” a company solve a problem, you can help a company solve a problem.
  • Overused or cliché phrases
  • Anything about what the job would do for you : Focus on what you can do for them.

8. Follow any instructions in the job description.

Finally, all of the above are just guidelines. The best indicator of what an employer is looking for in a cover letter—length-wise or otherwise—is the employer itself.

So if a job posting tells you that a cover letter should be a different length than we’ve indicated, default to the job description. Many job seekers focus most, if not all, of their energy on developing the resume while giving little thought to the cover letter; others are unsure what a cover letter does or why it is even needed. As the document that personally introduces you (and your resume), it can be a powerful and essential tool in a job search.

Under most circumstances, a cover letter is used as an introduction and should accompany your resume, whether e-mailed, posted on a job site, mailed, or hand delivered to an employer.

There are a few exceptions to this rule: being a personal introduction that accompanies your resume, a cover letter is not needed if you are hand carrying a resume to a prearranged interview since you will be present to introduce yourself. If an interview is not prearranged when hand delivering a resume, then a cover letter is appropriate since you would not want to be so presumptuous as to assume you will have an interview — even if that turns out to be the case.

Also, if you are delivering the resume to a recruiter or during a networking event such as a career fair, a cover letter is not always needed as these are often cases where the opportunity to introduce oneself in person supersedes the need for a written introduction. However, many candidates at career fairs are handing out resumes; to be sure your documents stand out, you may want to have a broad cover letter on hand and include it with your resume when not meeting directly with hiring managers.

Oklahoma State football from A to Z: Everything you need to know about the 2024 Cowboys

STILLWATER — With the start of the season just over a week away , the Oklahoma State football team has zeroed in on some lofty goals, thanks to a wealth of experienced players returning.

The 18th-ranked Cowboys open the season against the No. 1 team at the FCS level, South Dakota State, which will come to Boone Pickens Stadium riding a 29-game winning streak. The Pokes and Jackrabbits are set to square off at 1 p.m. Aug. 31 at BPS. 

Though OSU comes into the season with known commodities in several areas, there’s still plenty to learn about this team. Here’s an A-to-Z guide to preview the year:

A is for Alan Bowman

Back for his seventh year of college football and his second as the Cowboys’ quarterback, the 24-year-old Bowman’s veteran presence and reliability will be the glue that holds the wildly talented players together as an offense. 

B is for Big 12 Championship Game

The Pokes have made two of the last three, but have not won it yet. That remains the next step for this program, though the 12-team playoff also presents uncharted territory.

C is for Collin Oliver

The senior edge rusher enters the season fifth on OSU’s all-time sacks list with 22.5. With his role shifting more toward the pass rush and away from traditional linebacker play, Oliver has a chance to move up a few more notches. Leslie O’Neal holds the all-time record with 34.0.

D is for Defensive Improvement

While there is a lot of excitement about some of OSU’s individuals on defense, the overall production of the group is the most important factor in the team’s long-term goals. OSU finished last season outside the top 80 in nearly every meaningful defensive stat, and outside the top 120 in a couple, including pass yards allowed per game. As Bryan Nardo enters his second year as defensive coordinator, his unit must show significant signs of growth.

E is for Ezeigbo

Unlike last year when the Cowboys welcomed a wave of transfer portal additions, this team will see only a few new faces. Among them, edge rusher Obi Ezeigbo is one of the most intriguing. For one, he enters in an area where OSU needs help, but also, he’s coming from the Division II level after a solid career at Gannon University. Eyes will be on him to see if he can make the jump.

F is for Fast Start

The veteran nature of this team should help the Pokes avoid the type of messy start they had last year, when they lost two of their first four games. That’s good news, considering their schedule is much tougher this year. Along with opening against a team that has won 29 straight, the Cowboys host an SEC squad (Arkansas) and go on the road to face Tulsa before diving into Big 12 play against two of the league’s favorites, Utah and Kansas State. 

G is for Getting to the Quarterback

Last year, OSU averaged 1.93 sacks per game. It was the first time since 2013 that the defense didn’t reach the 2.0 mark. That number needs to improve, and it’s part of the reason new defensive line coach Paul Randolph was brought in. It’s also part of the reason Oliver will be used as a pass rusher more frequently. But the changes need to produce sacks, pressure or at least less time in the pocket for QBs.

H is for Heisman Chase

Can Ollie Gordon II contend for the Heisman ? Can any running back challenge for the award that has gone to 20 quarterbacks in the last 24 years? Gordon won the Doak Walker Award last year, rushing for 1,732 yards and 20 touchdowns. He is a major key to the Cowboys’ team success, and their won-loss record will have a direct impact on his Heisman chances.

I is for Interceptions

This one goes both ways. OSU picked off 13 passes in 14 games last year, which is a solid number. But it can always improve, and with a more seasoned secondary, it’s likely to do so. Perhaps more importantly, the offense needs to see its interception numbers drop. The 14 picks thrown by Bowman last year was the only bothersome stat he produced. He has shown in previous seasons that he can keep interceptions low, and that’s a step he needs to take this year.

J is for Josh Ford

Few true freshmen will get the chance to see the field this year. It has nothing to do with talent, and everything to do with the number of returning starters and backups the Cowboys already have in place. While Ohio transfer Tyler Foster looks like the clear starter at tight end, keep an eye on Ford, the 6-foot-6, 245-pound Stillwater product who has impressed with his toughness since arriving on campus in January. He might not take the job from Foster, but Ford could certainly be in the rotation.

K is for Korie Black

Zooming in a bit closer on the secondary, the group has a lot of experience, but none more than what Black brings. The super-senior enters his third year as a starter and has been one of the Big 12’s most consistent coverage cornerbacks the last two seasons. He is a rock in the back end of the OSU defense.

L is for Linebackers

This position group will look different than it did a year ago as part of some adjustments Nardo made to his 3-3-5 scheme in the offseason. And those changes offer some intrigue. While Oliver won’t be in a typical linebacker role quite as often as last year, Nick Martin is back after his breakout sophomore season. And they welcome to the group Kendal Daniels, a redshirt junior who has been a key player at safety the past two seasons. Now measuring 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, Daniels has the physicality to excel at linebacker, though coach Mike Gundy maintains Daniels will still see time at safety .

M is for Maturity

Bowman is 24 years old. The starting offensive line could include all sixth-year players with an average age of 23.5. The three expected starters at receiver are all in their fourth or fifth seasons. And the defense is much the same with fourth-, fifth- and sixth-year players in major roles. Rare is the opportunity to bring together as much experience as the Cowboys have in key spots all over the field.

N is for New Opponents

The Big 12 welcomed four new programs to the league and OSU will get a look at three of them. Two of the most intriguing games against newcomers bookend the Pokes’ Big 12 schedule. Utah, which is widely considered the top contender for the league title, comes to Stillwater on Sept. 21, and OSU visits Colorado for the regular season finale Nov. 29.

O is for Ollie Gordon II

We’ve already discussed his Heisman chances, but if anyone deserves two entries on here, it’s Gordon. With such an experienced offensive line, and a balanced passing attack, Gordon should be set up for potential success, even when opponents try to take him away. After leading the nation in rushing and all-purpose yards last year, Gordon could not only cement himself as the top running back in college football, but add even more juice to the excitement NFL front offices have for him.

P is for Playoffs

This is where the 12-team playoff comes into the picture. Yes, the Cowboys want to win the Big 12 Championship Game, but part of that motivation is the potential to earn a bye in the first round of the playoffs. There’s no guarantee that the Big 12 will get a second team into the playoff, especially if the teams at the top of the league beat up on each other all year. So the playoff race will be tense for teams like OSU, who could easily find themselves on the bubble.

Q is for Quick Passes

A weapon the Cowboys began to lean on even more than usual last year was the quick pass, particularly to slot receiver Brennan Presley. The super-senior from Bixby is already in the program’s top 10 for career receptions, and he had two games with at least 15 catches last year. More games like that could be in his future as opponents focus on the best way to contain Gordon. 

R is for Ring of Honor

This is the fifth year of OSU’s Ring of Honor at Boone Pickens Stadium, and the first time a defensive player gets the call. Defensive end and College Football Hall of Famer Leslie O’Neal will be inducted during the Sept. 7 game against Arkansas, joining the quartet of running backs who led the way in the Ring of Honor: Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders, Bob Fenimore and Terry Miller.

S is for Stribling

He might seem like something of a forgotten man, but redshirt junior receiver De’Zhaun Stribling won’t be forgotten for long. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound receiver has NFL skill and will get the chance to show it after missing most of last year with a broken wrist.

T is for Trent Howland

A lack of depth behind Gordon at running back sent the Cowboys to the transfer portal over the summer, landing the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Howland from Indiana. His size makes him a unique back, and his toughness was proven in the Big Ten Conference. Howland, along with redshirt freshman Sesi Vailahi — and possibly true freshman Rodney Fields Jr. — will be the primary backups when Gordon needs a rest.

U is for Updates in BPS

For the second straight year, Boone Pickens Stadium got some fan-centric modifications. Mirroring the work that was done to the north bleachers in 2023, the south side got a makeover with more leg room, additional aisles, more chairback seats and other amenities added below the bleachers. With the changes, the seating capacity of BPS now stands at 52,305. And for the first time in program history, OSU has sold out all of its home games before the start of the season.

V is for Versatility

One of the wrinkles that was added to the Cowboy defense over the offseason was its use of multi-position players. Oliver can be a defensive end or a linebacker. Daniels can be a linebacker or safety. Interior defensive linemen can slide to end positions. The versatility of the OSU defense will be one of its biggest advantages, particularly when it comes to disguising its calls.

W is for Ward

The Cowboys have been reliable at placekicker for most of the last few years, and now it’s time for another new leg to step in. Logan Ward, a walk-on from Deer Creek High School in Edmond, is set to take over the job. He has punted and been the kickoff specialist in previous seasons, but this is his first time filling the primary placekicking role. 

X is for Xavier Ross

Returning to the versatility conversation from above, Ross is another key piece. He began his OSU career as a defensive tackle, then shifted to end last year. Now, the 6-foot-4, 285-pound super-senior will get a chance to show the skills he picked up playing both positions as he combines the size and strength to go inside, but the quickness to be a threat on the edge.

Y is for Young Backups

We’ve dissected the veteran experience that fills the vast majority of OSU’s starting positions this year. But some youngsters are fighting for playing time on the second string. Freshmen like Ford, Fields and safety David Kabongo have impressed early. And more seasoned young players like redshirt sophomore receiver Talyn Shettron or defensive end Jaleel Johnson could be in line for bigger snap totals as well. 

Z is for Zane Flores

The gunslinger from Gretna, Nebraska, benefited from a no-pressure freshman year last fall, getting the chance to learn the offense and develop at a relaxed pace. But now, he’s in the heat of the battle for the backup quarterback job with redshirt sophomore Garret Rangel. Barring a Bowman injury, the backup QB battle should continue all season, setting the stage for a duel for the starting job next spring.
