  • Bathukamma 2024 | Bathukamma Festival in Telangana | Bathukamma Panduga

The legend of Batukamma Panduga is mentioned in one of the historical texts scripted in Telugu. Centuries ago, King Dharmangada of Chola Dynasty used to rule South India. He was childless for many years after marriage. After performing many pujas and rituals, his wife gave birth to Goddess Lakshmi.

Baby Lakshmi survived many accidents. So, her parents named her Batukamma (Bathuku = life, Amma= suffix to female names and mother). Since then, Batukamma festival is celebrated by young girls in Telangana region. The main purpose of this festival is to worship the Goddess in the belief that the young girls would get husbands as per their wish. It is celebrated for nine days beginning from the Padyami (first day) of the month Ashvayuja (September-October).

There is another legend or katha about Bathukamma mentioned in Telugu books. Daksha performed a Yagna and invited everyone but his youngest daughter, Gauri, who married to Lord Shiva against his wish. In spite of Shivas will, Gauri went to the Yagna and insulted along with Lord Shiva. She was unable to tolerate the insult and sacrificed her life by setting herself ablaze. Wishing to bring her back, women present her flowers and make turmeric idol of the Goddess and sing and dance around the idol of Bathukamma.

Bathukamma- The Regional Festival of Telangana

essay writing on bathukamma

In today’s article, we journey all the way to the south of India to a 9-year-old state to explore a regional event close to the people’s hearts. I’m confident you guessed Telangana, India’s youngest state . Bathukamma is a traditional celebration held in Telangana. It is dedicated to Goddess Gauri devotion and honors womanhood and women’s power in society.

The celebration entails making exquisite floral arrangements to represent the deity and praying. Bathukamma demonstrates the intimate bond between humans and nature, displaying thankfulness for nature’s contributions. Through traditional music, dances, and customs, the event develops social relationships, promotes unity, and protects Telangana’s cultural legacy.

It is celebrated during the Hindu month known as Bhadrapada, which usually falls in September or October according to the Gregorian calendar. The festival begins on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya (the new moon day) and continues for nine days. Bathukamma also often coincides with Navaratri, leading up to Dussehra. Thus, resulting in a joyful season that includes both the goddess’s worship and the triumph of virtue over evil.

What inspired the name Bathukamma? The name “Bathukamma” is derived from two words: “bathuku” which means “life” and “amma” which means “mother.” “Bathukamma” can be roughly translated as “Mother Goddess of Life” in English.

During Bathukamma, ladies create stunning floral arrangements utilizing a variety of seasonal flowers to represent nature’s wealth. The flowers are arranged in a conical shape, with a turmeric-molded figure of the goddess Gauri (Matha Gowri/parvati) in the center, on top of the floral arrangement. This floral arrangement, known as Bathukamma, forms the focal point of the celebrations. This arrangement represents the human connection to nature.

Women praise the goddess and show their appreciation for nature by singing, dancing, and performing traditional folk dances around the Bathukamma. The event celebrates the Telangana region’s cultural heritage, joy, and great respect for the divine feminine.

Bathukamma is observed for 9 days. Every day of the nine-day Bathukamma festival is dedicated to a different subject or manifestation of the goddess. the flowers utilized and the offerings presented to the deity differ as well.

During these nine days, women form groups and visit each other’s houses, carrying their beautifully prepared Bathukamma. The hosting house lady invites other women in as part of this visitation by applying a vermilion dot (kunkumma) on the forehead, applying turmeric to the feet, and exchanging gifts known as “vayanam.” Clothes, bangles, accessories, fruits, and household things are examples of suitable gifts. And they place their bathukamma’s in the centre and joyfully dance around it, praising the goddess.

The 9 days which are celebrated with 9 types of bathukammas with 9 types of sacred food offerings and vayanam’s are as follows:

Engili Pula Bathukamma : On the first day, which is Mahalaya Amavasya (the new moon day) engili pula bathukamma is celebrated. Ladies gather “Celosia” (gunugu) and “marigold” (banthi) flowers for bathukamma. Sesame seeds, broken rice, and rice are combined and offered to the goddess as a sacred food offering. Vayanam is offered to ladies in the form of “betel leaves”(tamalapaku) and “holy basil leaves”(Tulasi).

Atkula Bathukamma : The second day, ashvayuja shudda padyami (the first day of the bright fortnight), is known as atkula bathukamma. On this day, bathukamma is decorated with “Tanner’s cassia” (tangedu), “Chrysanthemum (chamanthi)”, “celosia”, and “Marigold” flowers. Women prepare “Split Moong Dal (sappidi pappu),” “Jaggery,” and “Flattened Rice” combined together as meal offerings. Vayanam is offered in form of flattened rice.

Muddapappu Bathukamma : Muddapappu Bathukamma begins on the third day, Ashvayuja Shudda Vidiya (the second day of the bright fortnight). Bathukamma is decorated with flowers such as “Jasmine,” “Hibiscus,” “Lotus,” and “Star Jasmine” on this day. A dish known as “Muddapappu” (a lentil dish), “jaggery,” and “milk” are prepared and served to the goddess.

Nanabiyyam Bathukamma : Nanabiyyam Bathukamma is celebrated on the fourth day, Ashvayuja Shudda Tidiya (the third day of the bright fortnight). On this day, “Celosia” and “Tanner’s cassia” are used to make bathukamma. “Soaked rice” (Nanbettina biyyam) is offered to the goddess as a sacred food offering. Vayanam is made from soaked rice combined with jaggery.

Atla Bathukamma : On the fifth day, which is Ashvayuja Shudda chavithi (the fourth day of the bright fortnight) atla bathukamma is commenced. This Bathukamma is a magnificent arrangement of “Tanner’s cassia” (tangedu), “Chrysanthemum (chamanthi),” “Hibiscus,” and “pumpkin flowers.” Women get up early at this time to make exquisite uppidi biyyam Attlu (wheatlet crepes) as a sacrifice to the goddess. Bathukamma is immersed in water as part of the last rite known as “Nimmajjanam” or “Visarjan,” which represents Goddess Gauri’s departure. This deed concludes the event and depicts the goddess’ return to her holy dwelling. Bathukamma’s immersion in water is also an expression of thanks to nature, particularly to water, which maintains crops during the monsoon season. Furthermore, the act of immersion is thought to purify the surroundings and bring prosperity.

Bathukamma is strongly entrenched in Telangana’s cultural customs and history. The celebration is significant in the context of Telangana’s distinct cultural identity , and its observance has been passed down through generations in the state. Bathukamma’s rituals, songs, and customs are inextricably linked to Telangana’s native customs, folklore, and beliefs. As a result, the event has become an intrinsic part of Telangana’s cultural history, with a strong sense of regional pride and attachment.

Overall, the celebration of Bathukamma has cultural and spiritual importance, encapsulating the festival’s end as par with the cyclical aspect of existence in life.

Bathukamma: Understanding this flower festival of Telangana

Bathukamma: Understanding this flower festival of Telangana

Today marks the beginning of Bathukamma, a nine-day bright and alluring celebration that takes place in Telangana and some parts of Andhra Pradesh . Bathukamma, which translates to "Mother Goddess come alive" is a floral extravaganza that is primarily celebrated by women and brings in the spirit of autumn with an explosion of colors, zeal, and a strong connection to nature and history.

How the festival is observed

Flowers of various colors are expertly arranged in circular rows, one layer on top of the other, on a brass plate or a tambalam . These arrangements are called "Bathukamma." Then it is maintained before prayers are said and the family goddess is invoked. Women chant and dance all around Bathukamma shrines as stories about the deity are narrated in a particular Telangana dialect.

Significance

Telugu natives view Bathukamma as their mother, the source of life, and their energy. During the event, the Telugu community worships Goddess Gowri (Maa Durga) by erecting "gaurammas," or conical turmeric mounds, atop the Bathukamma flower shrines. The festival, which typically falls in September-October, coincides with the conclusion of the monsoon season and the onset of autumn.

At the onset of the harvest festival

Bathukamma was historically a festival held to thank Goddess Parvati for her blessings on the crop harvest and the revenue she contributed to the current year, as well as to re-ask her for her blessing on the upcoming year.

Nine days of festivity

Bathukamma is a nine-day festival, with each day dedicated to a different type of flower and color. The last day, called Saddula Bathukamma, is the most important when the tallest and most elaborate Bathukamma is prepared. Women, dressed in their best, carry these flower stacks to a local waterbody, singing songs of praise and gratitude to Goddess Bathukamma to immerse it.

Cultural impact

The celebration of Bathukamma honors women and represents the Goddess who protects them. During the festival women of all ages come together to create these beautiful floral stacks, transcending boundaries of caste, creed, and social status. Women prepare a variety of traditional Telugu dishes, including sweets, savories, and curries, which are offered to the Goddess and then shared among the community.

The Common App Opens Today—Here’s How To Answer Every Prompt

Writing the Personal Statement for the Common Application

Today, the Common Application opens for the 2024–25 application cycle. As the platform opens, officially signaling the start of the college admissions season, many students are starting the daunting process of crafting their personal statements. The personal statement is a crucial opportunity to showcase individuality, character, and intellectual depth. In only 650 words, students should seek to encapsulate their authentic voice and perspective through a compelling and creative narrative. The process requires thorough brainstorming, strategy, and editing in order to produce an essay that is distinct from those of thousands of other applicants vying for seats at top colleges.

As students choose a prompt and begin brainstorming essays, here are the key points to consider in order to create a stellar essay for each prompt:

1. The Meaningful Background Prompt

Prompt: Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

This prompt invites you to share an aspect of your identity or experience that is central to who you are. Start by thoughtfully considering aspects of your identity that are unique to you; then, try to think of a specific anecdote or experience that provides a portrait of those qualities. While detail and specificity are critical for all engaging essays, they are particularly important in this one, as you should show (rather than tell ) admissions committees the things that are quintessential to who you are.

Your essay should also have a takeaway—aside from just telling admissions officers what the background, identity, interest, or talent is, you should also focus on what you’ve learned from this piece of your identity, how it has developed over time, and how you will apply it in college and beyond.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, 2. the overcoming obstacles prompt.

Prompt: The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

This prompt is an opportunity to demonstrate resilience and the capacity to learn from adversity—qualities that elite universities value highly. Begin by choosing a specific incident where you faced a significant challenge or failure—this could be an academic setback, a personal loss, or a time when you were out of your comfort zone. Students often fall into one of two common mistakes when tackling this question. First, many students rely on cliches and overused tropes. Keep in mind that admissions officers will likely read hundreds of essays recounting stories of students missing the game-winning goal or flunking a test in sophomore English. Try to select a story that only you can tell, and if you choose a topic you worry might be popular among other students, consider how you might recount it in a unique and unexpected way. On the other hand, some students fall into the opposite problem, sharing about a particularly personal, traumatic, or triggering experience that impacted them. Though it should convey personal insights, the personal statement is still a professional document, and you should not make your reader uncomfortable or unsettled by the information you share.

Finally, note that admissions officers are not primarily interested in the challenge itself, but in how you responded to the challenge. Focus on the steps you took to overcome the obstacle, what you learned about yourself in the process, and how this experience has shaped your future actions and mindset. Highlight any new skills, perspectives, or motivations that emerged from this experience, demonstrating your ability to grow and adapt in the face of adversity.

3. The Changed Perspective Prompt

Prompt: Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

Top colleges seek to admit students who are willing to engage in critical thinking and who possess the intellectual courage to question norms or ideas. For this essay, consider beginning with an anecdote—starting the essay in media res can be an engaging way to catch the reader’s attention and quickly establish the stakes of your narrative. As you share your story, remember that the essay’s focus is to demonstrate your open-mindedness, your commitment to seeking the truth, and your willingness to engage deeply with complex issues. It also shows your ability to respect differing viewpoints while developing your own reasoned stance. As such, you should take the admissions committee through your process of growth and change step-by-step, clearly articulating how the experience impacted you and how your changed perspective will enhance their campus community should you enroll.

4. The Gratitude Prompt

Prompt: Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?

Like the two prior prompts, this prompt requires students to share a particular anecdote, and students should consider beginning with their narrative before zooming out to explore the broader theme of gratitude. Start by recounting a specific instance where someone did something for you that made you feel unexpectedly grateful. This could be a small act of kindness, a significant gesture, or a moment of support that made a lasting impression on you. Then, explore how this experience of gratitude has affected your actions or attitude. As you do so, be sure to avoid platitudes or vapid buzzwords—rather than expressing that the experience made you feel “good” or “appreciated” or the equivalent, share how it has affected your perspective or actions going forward. The best responses are those that illustrate actionable change rather than fuzzy feelings.

5. The Personal Growth Prompt

Prompt: Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

A student’s college years are all about growth and transformation, and this prompt invites students to demonstrate their capacity for self-reflection and teachability. Thus, while this prompt might invite you to describe a major event or accomplishment, what you really want to show is a transformative period and the resulting reflection. Don’t feel as though the accomplishment, event, or realization needs to be especially earth-shattering or ground-breaking—sometimes the small things can make an impression in a big way. Finally, if you do choose to write about an accomplishment, be sure that you are not bragging. The prompt is an opportunity to show self-awareness, rather than to tout your achievements.

6. The Captivating Concept Prompt

Prompt: Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

Intellectual curiosity and authentic passion are distinguishing characteristics in the landscape of top college admissions. For this prompt, zoom in on a particular topic that genuinely fascinates you, whether it’s a specific academic subject, a philosophical idea, or a creative pursuit. Many students manufacture a response to this prompt based on what they assume will impress admissions officers—but if you aren’t truly interested in Kantian ethics, an admissions officer will be able to tell. However silly, mundane, quirky, or bizarre your “captivating concept” may be, if it’s true to you—write about it!

While your response should describe how a specific aspect of this topic captivates your interest and why it resonates with you on a deeper level, it should also demonstrate how you have taken the initiative to explore this topic in unique ways. Have you sought out books on the topic? Taken an online course to elevate your knowledge? Started a club to connect with others who share your interest? Developed a passion project that mobilized your interest in service of your community?

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

If none of the above prompts allow you to effectively express yourself, remember that the Common App includes an open prompt, wherein you can write on a topic of your choice! This is an excellent opportunity to share a story that doesn’t fit neatly into the other prompts but is crucial to understanding who you are. If you choose to pursue this prompt, make sure your essay is well-structured and cohesive, with a clear theme or message that ties everything together.

The Common App essay is more than just a component of your application; it’s a chance to speak directly to admissions officers and present your authentic self. Taking the time to brainstorm and edit will allow you to submit an essay that showcases your unique voice and original perspective to admissions officers at top colleges.

Aaron Sorkin: How I Would Script This Moment for Biden and the Democrats

A standing microphone hangs over the president’s desk in the Oval Office. In the background are gold curtains and a Childe Hassam painting of American flags.

By Aaron Sorkin

Mr. Sorkin is a playwright and screenwriter.

Update: Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would not seek re-election.

The Paley Center for Media just opened an exhibition celebrating the 25th anniversary of “The West Wing,” the NBC series I wrote from 1999 to 2003. Some of the show’s story points have become outdated in the last quarter-century (the first five minutes of the first episode depended entirely on the audience being unfamiliar with the acronym POTUS), while others turned out to be — well, not prescient, but sadly coincidental.

Gunmen tried to shoot a character after an event with President Bartlet at the end of Season 1. And at the end of the second season, in an episode called “Two Cathedrals,” a serious illness that Bartlet had been concealing from the public had come to light, and the president, hobbled, faced the question of whether to run for re-election. “Yeah,” he said in the third season opener. “And I’m going to win.”

Which is exactly what President Biden has been signaling since the day after his bad night.

Because I needed the “West Wing” audience to find President Bartlet’s intransigence heroic, I didn’t really dramatize any downward pull that his illness was having on his re-election chances. And much more important, I didn’t dramatize any danger posed by Bartlet’s opponent winning.

But what if the show had gone another way?

What if, as a result of Bartlet revealing his illness, polling showed him losing to his likely opponent? And what if that opponent, rather than being simply unexceptional, had been a dump truck of ignorance and bad intentions? What if Bartlet’s opponent had been a dangerous imbecile with an observable psychiatric disorder who related to his supporters on a fourth-grade level and treated the law as something for suckers and poor people? And was a hero to white supremacists?

We’d have had Bartlet drop out of the race and endorse whoever had the best chance of beating the guy.

The problem in the real world is that there isn’t a Democrat who is polling significantly better than Mr. Biden. And quitting, as heroic as it may be in this case, doesn’t really put a lump in our throats.
