Should I Mention My Religion in My College Essay?

Here’s another key tip to keep in mind for your college applications, from College Essay Guy Ethan Sawyer!

The short answer is this: it’s okay to discuss religion in your essay as long as the take-away (or values) promoted in the essay are universal. Here’s what I mean:

In the past, I’ve had students write essay drafts that end with something like, “Since accepting Christ (or) learning to meditate (or) converting to Judaism, I’ve made it my goal to tell others about the difference that Christ/meditation/Judaism can make in their lives.” I call this the “missionary” essay. And it can be off-putting to readers, particularly to those who don’t share your religious beliefs (which, statistically speaking, is likely).

Instead, discuss the values you gained through your religion. How?  

Step 1: Take a look at this Values List and ask yourself: what values have I gained through my religion?

Examples: “Getting used to wearing a turban in ninth grade helped increase my self-confidence and, interestingly, my grades went up that year!” (or) “Feeling judged by my youth group leader helped me better understand how my friend must have been feeling about me; I realized I was essentially doing the same thing to her.”

Check out the values displayed in those sentences: self-confidence and empathy. Nice! And anyone, no matter the religion or belief system, can get on board with those.  

Step 2: Make sure the values you’re discussing are non-obvious and specific. Obvious connections lead to boring essays.

Examples: “Playing in the band at church helped me learn the value of working with others” (seen it!) (or) “Volunteering at our mosque helped me develop myself personally” (super vague–say how!).  

Step 3: Get feedback from someone who does not share your religious belief. Once s/he has read the essay, ask the person: do you feel closer to me after having read that? If the answer isn’t “Yes,” or even if the person hesitates before responding, ask, “What would help you feel closer to me?”  

Step 4: Listen with your entire being. Stay curious about his/her feedback to you.  

Step 5: Thank the person and go back to the drawing board.  

Because you are creative and original and you have something important to communicate.

“I often say that if I headed back to college today, I would major in comparative religions rather than political science … because religious actors and institutions are playing an influential role in every region of the world …”

This quote from Secretary of State John Kerry has been posted to my office door since last fall, when it appeared in an op-ed he wrote in America: The National Catholic Review . Of course, the idea of understanding religion and religious individuals resonated strongly with me, a professor of religious studies at a liberal arts college. But I believe the reasons for this sentiment are lost in the public discourse around both education and religion in the contemporary United States.

Turn on the evening news, open the morning newspaper or log on to any news page online and you will find a wide variety of stories that have some reference to religion. Syrian immigrants, evangelical voters, the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party in India, anti-Muslim rhetoric, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, neo-Catholicism under Pope Francis -- all of these recent stories and more would be fundamentally illuminated if viewers and readers had knowledge of the religious actors. Contemporary discourse in America, both in the public domain and in academe, is often quick to posit that these stories are “really” about politics, power, class, social standing and the like, and people often refuse to take the religious aspects of the narrative seriously. Yes, of course, any of these issues can be understood within a broader context of social and cultural concerns. Nevertheless, this contextualization does not give license to disregard the religious angle as superficial or otherwise unimportant.

Whether we like it or not, individuals and communities are inspired by their religious identities to take action in the world. Those actions can have positive effects on the world, such as social outreach or providing a sense of community to adherents, or negative ones, including violence against rivals or intolerance for others. The fact remains, however, that their actions are often rooted in religious ideals, or their worldview. The principal concern of religious studies is to expose differences in those worldviews so that we might understand the beliefs and practices of a wide variety of cultural actors. Different religious groups imagine the world differently, and that affects how they respond to contemporary concerns.

The academic discipline of religious studies does not train students to be Catholics or Buddhists or Jews any more than political science trains students to be Democrats or Republicans. Even though I teach at an institution that is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, my department is not wedded to Lutheran doctrine or even Christian identity, but to a scholarly desire to understand the world’s inhabitants and cultures. We train our students to read closely, think deeply, write cogently and, above all, analyze carefully the important -- and sometimes decisive -- role that religion plays in the lives of cultural actors across the globe. I often tell my students that it is our responsibility to use a “dispassionate third-party perspective” when viewing the religious phenomena, to understand and analyze while withholding judgment.

If the only people who understand Christianity are Christian, or Islam are Muslims, or Hinduism are Hindus, we are condemned to a world of misunderstanding, conflict and sectarianism. If we cede understanding of religious ideas to religious individuals, we lose the capacity to comprehend the motivations behind the thoughts and actions of anyone beyond our own religious tradition.

Don’t get me wrong, the discipline of religious studies is not imagined as a substitute for religious training. Faith communities will always have a strong desire and need to train members and leaders for service in their own religious communities; that enterprise is a permanent fixture in traditional religious practice.

However, for those aspiring to leadership in the 21st century, knowledge of the religions of the world from a nonconfessional perspective is not a luxury but a necessity. Study of the variety of religious traditions around the world makes it abundantly clear that different people operate under different assumptions about the way the world works. To understand their actions, we must also understand their motivations.

That distinction between the discipline of religious studies and training within religious communities is often lost when considering the topic of religion in an educational setting. But, as Thomas Clark, a former Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, wrote in the majority opinion of Abington v. Schempp, “It might well be said that one’s education is not complete without a study of comparative religion or the history of religion …” This sentiment is, perhaps, more true now than when Justice Clark wrote it in 1963.

This “complete” education that Clark mentions includes the habits of mind that we cultivate in our students. By combining the ability to understand motivations beyond ourselves with other disciplinary perspectives within the liberal arts, we train students to interact with the world in a responsible and informed way. The broader context of this type of education opens our students to a wide variety of skills, including language study, quantitative and scientific reasoning, and the various perspectives offered by the social sciences. All those tools and disciplinary lenses contribute to a nuanced view of the world that goes beyond vocational training. It also equips our graduates with agile minds that can solve problems and understand perspectives that we are yet to encounter.

In an environment that increasingly stresses skills that are immediately marketable, humanities departments often feel that we must justify our existence and our usefulness to employers. Consequently, you see the publication of brochures and the creation of websites that emphasize problem solving, critical thinking and cogent writing. Those are fine goals and, I would argue, our curriculum equips our graduates with these skills.

But the most important attribute that the academic study of religion offers to our students is even more vital and far more concrete: the ability to understand others. In a world in which we are increasingly exposed to difference of all types, what could be a more vital skill for navigating the future?

Why is Religion Important Essay

If we are not governed by a set of values, then our principles and idea of right and wrong are only based on opinion. The Nazis were not evil. They had a set of values that do not match many of the values that exist today. If they had kept to the religious promises they made the Vatican as they rose to power, then they would have had a hard time taking life in the way they did. My hypothesis is that religion is a human creation, but without some form of faith in more than human opinion, we are lost because only have ourselves to account to.

Human nature is bad. We are not born with a knowledge of right or wrong. That is why people turn out so differently. It is not because a person is born good or bad, but the way they are treated and the values they are taught is what makes them the person they become. Religion has sets of rules that people follow on mass. These rules are more than laws with punishments and rewards, they are based on a set of values, and those are the things that help a person grow to be well adjusted.

Imagine kids without the rule of parents. If a child was allowed to run around and do what he or she wished in an unchecked manner, then children would kill themselves by accident, become sociopaths, and become savages. There would be no way of knowing what would happen. Kids need a parental figure to give out rules and teach values, and that is what religion does for adults. It gives them a set of values and rules to live by.

We are taught what is right and wrong, and religion allows a certain unification that governments are unable to instill. The law tells us not to kill. We are not born with that knowledge. We are born to kill, which is why kids are often merciless insect (and pet) killers. We have both eyes facing front, which means we are born predators. The law tells us not to kill and not to steal. Most will never do such things, and part of that is due to religion. Religion came up with the idea that we shouldn’t kill and steal long before the law did.

The law simply tells us what to do, but religion tries to explain why we should do things. One may say that we do not do things because the law tells us not to, and that is a good enough reason for them, but it is too black and white for most people. Religion helps us shape values so we can make our own choices. For example, the law may say do not kill, but religion (the good religions) teaches us the sanctity of life, so if we had to kill a single person in order to save thousands–then religion allows us to make that choice where the law does not.

The law is the government’s way of trying to instill values, but they simply cannot do it with rules alone. The government would hope that if you follow the law, then you will see why it works and learn your values that way–but it is doing it all backwards. With peace-loving and good religions that do not condone killing, such as any religion “other than” the Arian brotherhood, Islam, and Satanism, you are taught why something is wrong so that you may then choose what you do. Good religions that do not condone killing say you can break the law because you have choices, but it first gives you the reasons and values needed to make the right decision (which usually involves following the law).

Common App Essay With Religion

For my common app essay, I am thinking about writing about how I almost didn’t go through with my Confirmation last year for the “Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?” prompt. I have heard a lot that you shouldn’t be talking about religion or anything controversial like politics, etc. However, the points that I want to make are not about questioning the religion or its values, they will be about how I learned that it’s okay and often beneficial to question a tradition, no matter how many people blindly follow it. Does this sound good/ acceptable for adcoms? (I’m not applying to religious schools, most of them are large state schools)

Yeah, probably fine.

It sounds like you have a good understanding of how the essay should be used. I agree that finding people with a range of beliefs to review it would put your mind at ease.

There’s a small chance that some adcom will hate the essay just because it’s about religion. But then again you could write about how Jello changed your life and some adcom would end up having a fear of Jello.

The problem with a lot of religious essays is they just talk about how the person is saved or how important Jesus is in their life. They don’t actually tell anything about the student writing them. Your take is self-reflective so it is a good potential topic.

The last thing worth considering is the vanishingly small likelihood of an adcom having an insuperable and unrecognized bias of this sort.

Of course, religion essays can be disastrous, but that’s because they’re awful essays and not because of the subject matter. I’ve seen many successful essays written from a religious or spiritual perspective.

Too late to edit above comment - but to clarify, some adcoms will react negatively to anything - that’s unpredictable. But a well-written essay that conveys the essence of the writer will resonate - whether about religion or other “taboo” subjects. It’s not the topic, it’s how clearly the personality of the writer shines through, and how it shows what the writer will contribute to the composition of the college.

On a related note, I’ve encountered a couple of people who have an irrational fear of Jello - hence my example. You just never know what is going to be seen as a positive - or a negative - by any particular individual. All you can do is showcase yourself in the best possible light.

Religion in Public Schools, Explained

Under the U.S. Constitution, public schools cannot promote or advance any particular religion, and they must respect the individual religious beliefs of students and staff.

What that looks like in practice raises complex questions and spirited debate about topics like prayer, and freedom of speech—and how those dovetail with larger issues of curriculum and school climate.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about religion in school, the separation of church and state, and school prayer.

Is prayer allowed in schools?

Yes. Students of all religious backgrounds can pray at school when not engaged in school activities or instruction, and teachers and administrators can neither sanction nor discourage such prayers.

Students’ rights to pray at school are protected by both the Constitution and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which requires districts to certify in writing that they have “no policy that prevents, or otherwise denies participation in, constitutionally protected prayer in public elementary and secondary schools” as a condition of receiving federal funds.

Schools cannot coerce students to pray , the U.S. Department of Education said in guidance on the matter last updated in May 2023. “Nothing in the First Amendment, however, converts the public schools into religion-free zones, or requires students, teachers, or other school officials to leave their private religious expression behind at the schoolhouse door,” that guidance said.

Students of all faiths have the right to organize prayers on campus, the federal guidance says, as long as those activities don’t disrupt school activities. Any limitations schools set must be applied consistently to religious and nonreligious speech, and they must not favor a particular religion.

What has the U.S. Supreme Court said about prayer in schools?

In the 1962 case Engel v. Vitale , the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a New York school could not require daily recitations of a prayer composed by the state’s Board of Regents.

In the 1963 case Abington School District v. Schempp , the court struck down a Pennsylvania state law that required school-led recitations of Bible verses and the Lord’s Prayer. That case involved a Unitarian family who who did not believe in the Holy Trinity or in an anthropomorphic God as conveyed in the King James Bible, Education Week wrote in a 2011 story. Their son protested mandated school prayers by leaving an open Quran on his desk. The court overturned the state law even after Pennsylvania lawmakers amended it to allow students to opt out.

“While the Free Exercise Clause [of the First Amendment] clearly prohibits the use of state action to deny the rights of free exercise to anyone, it has never meant that a majority could use the machinery of the State to practice its beliefs,” the court’s opinion said.

Schools may also run afoul of the Constitution if they sanction prayers at student events. In a 1992 decision in Lee v. Weisman , the court held that Rabbi-led prayers at a public school graduation ceremony amounted to unconstitutional state-sponsored religion. In a 2000 decision in Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe , the court ruled that a school’s practice of having a student lead prayers over a public address system before high school football games could be considered public speech and, therefore, a violation of the First Amendment.

The composition of the Supreme Court has changed notably since then, and some critics of those decisions have suggested conservative justices now may rule differently on such issues.

Can teachers pray at school?

Yes, in some cases.

Like students, teachers can pray independently and voluntarily during non-instructional hours, but they may not require students to pray as part of class or school-sponsored extracurricular activities.

But determining the line between private religious expression and sanctioned religious activities can be tricky.

The 2022 Supreme Court case Kennedy v. Bremerton School District centered on Joseph Kennedy, a high school football coach who sued the Bremerton, Wash., school district after administrators told him to discontinue his practice of praying on the 50-yard line immediately following each game after students, players, and even coaches began to join him.

Concerned about the safety of crowds, that the highly visible practice would appear to be school-sponsored, and that students would feel a sense of implicit coercion, the school board asked Kennedy to move his prayers to an alternate location. When the coach continued his prayers on the field, the school board placed him on administrative leave and declined to renew his contract.

In a landmark decision, the high court sided with the coach, ruling that his prayers were private speech protected by the First Amendment and that the Constitution neither requires nor permits schools to suppress such religious expression by employees to avoid the appearance of sanctioned religious practices.

The decision by the court’s conservative majority effectively overruled the long-held view that public policies and practices violated the establishment clause if they aren’t primarily secular in purpose, if they promote or inhibit religion, and if they represent an “excessive entanglement” between church and state.

Critics of the Kennedy decision have argued that it created a confusing legal landscape for school districts. The opinion also alarmed some representatives of religions that are a minority in the United States, like Islam.

Can schools require students with religious objections to say the Pledge of Allegiance?

No. In the 1943 case West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a school would violate the free speech rights of a student who was a Jehovah’s Witness if it forced him to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

“To believe that patriotism will not flourish if patriotic ceremonies are voluntary and spontaneous instead of a compulsory routine is to make an unflattering estimate of the appeal of our institutions to free minds,” the opinion said.

Students who do not wish to say the pledge, for religious or ideological reasons, stand silently and abstain.

Are students allowed to form religious clubs and organizations at school?

Yes. Students may form religious groups under the same school rules that govern non-religious student organizations, the 2023 federal guidance says.

Schools must give student religious clubs and organizations the same access to facilities and rights to publicize their activities that they give nonreligious groups.

Can schools require students to read the Bible and other religious texts?

Yes, but only for academic purposes. Courts have held that, while academic lessons on the Bible and other religious texts, like the Quran, are permissible, devotional readings in public schools violate the establishment clause in the First Amendment.

In June 2024, Oklahoma state Superintendent Ryan Walters directed schools to put a Bible in every classroom and to require teachers incorporate the Bible into classes for 5th through 12th grades .

Walters has predicted success with former President Donald Trump’s conservative nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court if the state faces a legal challenge over the directive.

Supporters of calls to incorporate scripture into classwork argue students need a basic level of biblical literacy to understand common references in literature, stories depicted in significant works of art, and the perspectives and beliefs of historical figures. But critics say directives like Walters’ are an effort to insert Christianity into public life as the country becomes more religiously diverse. Walters’ new rule requires only the Bible, not the primary text for any other religion.

Efforts to teach about the Bible can be fraught with challenges, Mark A. Chancey, a professor of religious studies at Southern Methodist University, told Education Week . Teachers must navigate differing views, even among Christian students, about how the text should be interpreted and applied, he said. Christian sects vary on which translation of scripture is most reliable and which books should be included, and teachers may not recognize the personal biases they carry about reading scripture.

What protections should schools provide Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh students?

Federal civil rights officials expect schools to protect students of all religious backgrounds from discrimination or harassment based on their faith.

Under the Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, schools must protect students who are Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, or of any other faith associated with a specific nationality or ethnic identity from bullying and harassment. Title VI protects people from discrimination based on race, color, or national origin. According to 2023 federal guidance , Title VI violations include harassment or bullying that is:

• is based on racial or ethnic stereotypes
• relates to skin color, physical features, or dress that “reflects both ethnic and religious traditions,” or
• targets a foreign accent or name, including names “commonly associated with particular shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics”

Can churches and religious groups run charter schools?

No. But supporters of a proposed Catholic-run charter school in Oklahoma continue to press the issue in court.

The state’s Supreme Court ruled in June that plans for St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, which would receive public funds and be operated by two Roman Catholic dioceses, violated the Oklahoma and U.S. constitutions. The court held that the charter school would be considered “a state actor” and not a private entity contracting with the state.

School law experts expect the school’s supporters to petition the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case.

Can students use vouchers and tax-credit scholarships to attend religious schools?

In the 2020 case Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue , the Supreme Court held that Montana committed discrimination when it refused to allow families to use state tax-credit scholarships to pay tuition to private Christian schools.

“A state need not subsidize private education,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote. “But once a state decides to do so, it cannot disqualify some private schools solely because they are religious.”

The court built on that decision in 2022, when it said Maine couldn’t exclude religious schools from a state program that pays for students to attend private school if their town does not have a public high school.

Since these rulings, many Republican-led states have passed new or expanded private school choice programs that provide public funds for students to attend private schools, a majority of which are religious.

Can schools display the Ten Commandments?

Courts have said schools cannot display the Ten Commandments, but officials in Louisiana plan to challenge the issue.

A Louisiana law, signed in June 2024, requires schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom. Supporters of the displays are emboldened by the Bremerton decision, in which the Supreme Court sided with a coach who prayed after football games. They see that decision as cracking open the door to more religious displays and texts in schools.

Teachers could display the text alongside classroom rules, historical quotes, cartoon jokes, and pop culture references to add context without promoting a specific religion, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill argued at an August press conference.

Parents suing to stop Louisiana’s law, who include nonreligious families and include clergy from a variety of faith backgrounds, have argued the law violates the Supreme Court precedent established in the 1980 case Stone v. Graham. In that decision, the court held that a similar Kentucky law that required a display of the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment because the display “had no secular legislative purpose” and was “plainly religious in nature.”

State officials in Louisiana believe today’s court may rule differently following the Bremerton decision. Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican, has said he welcomes the legal challenge.

“I think this is one of the cases where the (Supreme) Court has it wrong,” Landry told NewsNation July 18 . “And so here is the question: If the Supreme Court has something wrong, why would you not want that to be corrected? What is the price you would pay to correct that?”

Should I write about religion in college app essays? Answered

I am considering writing an essay about my challenge of the notion you can't be gay and Christian through personal experiences. However, I am concerned that there may be a stigma against my application if I decide to write about said experience.

After my last trip to New Mexico, I took a new look at my life, rethought a lot of things, and I'm sure that this wouldn't have happened if I hadn't contacted psychics before the trip. I don't think it's a bad topic but you need to make sure you don't come off as overly negative. It could be a very inspiring essay or it could be very generic. I think if you dig into specific experiences that you've had with sexuality and religion then it will turn out well. Just don't generalize it towards Christianity as a whole because a lot of Christian sects embrace it. The notion that you can't be gay and Christian is usually perpetuated by more conservative sects and people who aren't Christian and don't know what they're talking about. Just be careful to be specific to your experience and avoid being too broad and I think it will be appreciated.

I'd also consider for a minute what I think the other answer is trying to say, which is that you should make sure this is a part of your identity. If you know that your religion and experience is a major part of who you are, then colleges will want to hear about it. However, if you were raised Christian but you don't consider it a big part of your life, maybe reconsider.

@cp839 's answer is good, but to add to it, consider the colleges that you're applying to. All colleges are different and many will have different outlooks on religion in general; for example, sending this essay to Santa Clara University or Boston College (top Jesuit universities) would likely get a different reaction than sending it to a secular university like Cornell. That doesn't mean positive or negative—just different.

In general, if you're going to write an essay with a topic like this, you need to make sure you're leaning into the personal and not the more abstract part of this topic. An essay about how your experiences with religion and sexual orientation have shaped you as a person is great. An essay about Catholicism and sexual orientation in general is a bad essay—not because of any stigma, but because it's not enough about you. The danger with these kinds of essays is that they can very easily become an Opinions & Editorials piece about a topic rather than a personal essay about your experiences—they need to be the latter to be successful.

Cool, then you're on the right track. I've just seen a lot of essays where students pick a topic that's really important to them and end up writing more about the topic than themselves—so it's something to watch out for.

You're overthinking it. College is meant to explore and many people cast off past affiliations and adopt new ones, including religion. Colleges want to know if you can handle the academic work, first and foremost. Secondly, a few care if you can contribute to community. Most don't care and only need/want your tuition.

am I overthinking on my topic or my worry of the topic?

I don't think you're overthinking it; it's okay to be careful and contemplative about your essays. After all, they are important. To be honest, a compelling and thoughtful essay on any topic is all the colleges ask for. If being Christian & gay means to you and comprises a lot of your personal identity, go for it!
