1. Case Management

Case management nurses handle long- and short-term disability claims for patients. They collaborate with physicians, employers, and insurance companies to help facilitate communication and ensure compliance among all the parties involved.

Ultimately, their goal is to help coordinate treatment and funding so that a return-to-work goal can be established and met.

Since most of their work can be done over the phone or through email, case management is a perfect work-from-home position for skilled and experienced nurses who are familiar with the healthcare industry.

2. Insurance Claims

Making the transition from caregiving to working as an insurance claims specialist can be more natural than you might think. And, working for a health insurance company can allow more job flexibility.

Health insurance companies need people with healthcare knowledge to examine and investigate claims to determine whether or not certain procedures are covered. They also work to decide how much money the insurance company is required to pay for each claim.

Healthcare professionals already have this knowledge, and nurses are also familiar with medical records, treatment plans, and other details insurance adjusters aren’t typically familiar with.

Your background in nursing will help you make informed decisions in the best interest of patients, medical providers, and insurance companies. And, of course, you can work from home.

3. Telephone Triage Nurse

Busy medical facilities and doctors often run triage by telephone. This allows highly qualified nurses to speak with patients, assess their symptoms, and recommend the best course of action before they show up to receive healthcare services.

Triage nurses can often answer patient questions, preventing unnecessary visits and keeping other healthcare professionals and support staff focused on the patients in the clinic.

The telephone triage system helps handle less urgent problems more efficiently so that resources are appropriately distributed. Tele-nurses can work at home and still contribute directly to patient care. They provide valuable medical advice to patients with a wide variety of problems.

Of course, you’d need nursing experience in a clinical setting before taking on this home nursing job. Some clinics hire both BSN and ADN nurses.

You can also think beyond your local medical clinics and hospitals when searching for these kinds of nurse jobs. Some national companies like CVS Pharmacies hire telephonic nurses to help their customers.

4. Nursing Informatics

This exciting new branch of healthcare uses technology to improve patient care and create a better healthcare system. Informatics works to find innovative intersections between technology, communication, and healthcare systems to move the entire industry forward.  Nursing informatics examples include innovations like telehealth, telemedicine, and electronic health records.

If you are interested in changing the system by developing and implementing new solutions, you may be able to use your nursing degree in health informatics.

Because the field is constantly evolving and taking shape, there is plenty of room to grow, explore your interests, and help create your position.

As a nursing informaticist , you could serve as a nursing consultant to give a nurse’s perspective on new technology systems. You could help build databases to track patient outcomes. You could even write computer programs to help other healthcare professionals better serve patients.

You’d need at least a bachelor’s degree, but most employers prefer nurses with master’s degrees. Increasingly, informaticists have Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees.

5. Call Center Nurse

While telephone triage and call center nurses are closely related, a call center position doesn’t require as much nursing experience.

A home-based call center nurse will be in charge of direct calls to the appropriate parties, but he or she won’t be responsible for direct patient care.

Essentially, this is more of an administrative role than a telemedicine role, but medical and healthcare companies will give candidates with medical backgrounds the edge when it comes to hiring.

Keep in mind that fewer responsibilities also mean lower pay.

6. Freelance Nurse Writer

Medical writing is a challenging field that requires extensive knowledge of medical terminology and procedures along with strong writing skills.

Many nurses who enjoy writing have found freelancing to be ideal for remote work.

It also serves an important purpose: The medical field relies on a variety of well-researched materials that are used among professionals and published and distributed to the general public.

Writers may be tasked with putting together promotional materials, journal articles, press releases, and much more.

Businesses today rely heavily on website content and online news stories to connect with potential customers and promote their goods and services. An experienced medical writer can be an essential part of a successful medical website, facility, or drug manufacturer.

7. Nurse Educator

Teaching isn’t for everyone, but as a  nurse educator , you could have a huge impact on the profession by helping make sure students enter the workforce armed with the skills and knowledge all nurses should have.

Institutions of higher education throughout the United States have busy nursing degree programs, but they also have different educational requirements for faculty members. Some community colleges may hire nurse educators who have only a bachelor’s degree, while others require master's degrees to teach.

8. Legal Nurse Consultant

Nurses who want to apply their experience in another profession may want to consider becoming a legal nurse consultant.

Nurses who work for law firms help attorneys and paralegals understand the medical angle of personal injury and other kinds of lawsuits. They can also help with Medicare and health insurance lawsuits.

Since you could do most of this work via Zoom or cellphone, this is an ideal remote nursing position that extends beyond the clinical setting.

9. Nurse Recruiters

All nurses know the importance of proper unit staffing. As a nurse recruiter, you could help hospitals keep adequate staffing levels which helps bedside nurses provide the best care possible.

And, of course, this is an ideal role for the stay-at-home nurse. Some hospitals have their own nurse recruiters, while others use third-party recruitment services.

Most nurse recruiters interview candidates and act as liaisons between the unit and the candidate during the hiring process.

Like nurse educators, healthcare recruiters can help shape the profession by finding qualified applicants for hospitals, doctor’s offices, and even home healthcare providers.

10. Clinical Research Nurse

Many healthcare facilities and teaching hospitals have clinical research programs. These programs help medical professionals gather research to develop new medical treatments and help practitioners learn more about disease prevention.

Clinical research is a great way for clinicians to help develop life-saving medications, treatments, and vaccines. They help develop and facilitate studies to provide information about new medical procedures and medications.

Some of the research-related tasks that a remote clinical research nurse performs may include:

  • Overseeing clinical trials
  • Recruiting trial participants
  • Educating and training research staff
  • Administering questionnaires to clinical trial participants
  • Writing grant applications
  • Speaking with clinical trial participants to explain procedures and listening to concerns
  • Keeping detailed records with electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Writing articles and researching reports

Nurses no longer need to commit to a career in bedside nursing or home care positions.

Now, registered nurses are in demand in many different sectors of the economy, including the legal, technology, and insurance professions - many of which also offer work-at-home positions.

You don’t have to work in a hospital or medical office to provide valuable care for patients and earn a competitive wage. And with the growing demand for telehealth due to COVID-19, there are more remote job opportunities than ever before.

If working from home as a nurse is something you aspire to do, you have many options! It is possible to provide quality nursing care and enjoy a flexible schedule where you can work from home.

Hi Holly, one occupation I would like to mention is that of a craniosacral therapist. My background of 40 years of nursing is ICU, ambulatory care, education, private consulting, and 20 of those years I’ve been an independent nurse doing cst therapy. I work part time as I am retired from the hospital, and have a private practice where I work mostly on closed head injury patients and it’s highly effective and satisfying. I set my own hours, I am my own boss, and it works well in my stage of life. Let me know if you want more info,mi think it’s a natural for nurses!.

Holly, I am a RN, MSN/Ed. I have over 20 years experience as a ICU nurse, and now I work as a Nurse Administrator and RN Program Director. Due to added family responsibilities, I must find online nursing work. The challenge has been difficult, or maybe I am just not looking in the right places. Do you have any suggestions?

December 28, 2021 at 7:14 am

Have you applied for any jobs yet, or is your challenge finding a job you want to apply for? It’s hard for me to pinpoint where the breakdown is happening without knowing more information.

I definitely suggest talking to people in your network and letting them know you’re looking to work from home. You never know who in your network may know of an opportunity. Also, is your company open to telecommuting? Have you tried submitting a telecommuting proposal to them?

Received my MSN in Nursing Education in November 2019. Nurse for 25 years bedside, med-surg/tele/oncology. Looking to begin my journey in nursing education online but most postings requirea terminal degree which I plan on returning to school to complete. Would like something to do during the interim i.e content editor, question writer/editor for NCLEX. Any other suggestions or leads much appreciated. My back can’t take much more of the stressors and increased demands of the bedside nurse.

I am an RN BSN for 25 years now. I love my job at a Nursing Home and it has wonderful retirement. However, I’m looking to supplement my income. I live in remote Western Oklahoma and have decent internet. I have allot of Long term Care and Hospice experience, as well as med surg. Any ideas?

October 25, 2019 at 8:31 am

Hmmm, most of the positions for remote nursing jobs are full-time. You may be able to do PT, home health — but that would require visiting patients’ homes and then charting from your home.

Try checking out FlexJobs, or Sadie’s FB group, Remote Nursing Jobs — maybe someone in there knows of a part-time gig: https://www.facebook.com/groups/remotenursingjobs/

If you find something — I’d love it if you could come back and share, so that others can benefit too.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hello I was a Med-Surg nurse for 3 years before my injury. I had 1 year of clinical rotation to go for my NP. I have had 3 surgeries on my right wrist. I have a right fused wrist and CRPS. In the left shoulder I have bicep tendinitis. My restrictions are no lifting, pushing, pulling more than 10-20lbs. I am unable to perform repetitive tasks with my right wrist and left shoulder. Are their any jobs out here that I would be able work as a RN?

Thanks, Stepfanie

October 1, 2019 at 8:45 am

Hi Stephanie,

Sorry to hear about your injuries.

None of these nursing jobs require physical labor. Although, you’ll want to be sure that you have an erogonomic home office setup so that you don’t end up with carpal tunnel.

If you’re interested in working remotely for an insurance company — check out this post: https://www.theworkathomewoman.com/medical-insurance-jobs/

You can also join Sadie’s Facebook Group — she posts new work at home job leads for nurses almost daily: https://www.facebook.com/groups/314006579279450/

I’m currently working from home as a telephonic case manager but because of the production standards and because I’m also a caregiver I wanted to look for something like a 24/7 nurse line where I could take a call and move on to the next as well as work part time. I have BSN and wondered how much training is involved.

September 12, 2019 at 4:20 pm

What about poison control hotlines? They’re open 24/7 — you do need a special certification, but I think they’ll train the right individual.

Also, have you joined this remote nursing group on Facebook? Sadie, the owner, knows a ton about remote nursing jobs, and she can probably direct you in the right direction: https://www.facebook.com/groups/314006579279450/

Hi, I have worked as a surgical/CVOR nurse for the past 9 years. Even though I do love it in the operating room, I find myself wanting to step back and have more flexibility with my schedule. My daughters are growing up and I don’t want to miss their last high school memories. Do you know if there is anything that I could do from home that is maybe more geared for acute care?

April 4, 2019 at 8:29 am

There are quite a few triage type positions. I love FlexJobs for finding remote nursing positions, but you could also use Indeed.

I work from home as a RN coder and I love it. It is a welcome change from the hospital because I was so burnt out! Pros: Working from home saves me time from commuting, less wear and tear on my car and less stress on my body, I can cook lunch if I want, flexible hours.

Cons: people think they can just drop by your house at anytime, so you need to set boundaries. It can get lonely if you are used to being around a lot of people I post work from home nurse and other medical professional jobs weekly on my youtube channel ” Simone irie ” . Stop by for more info :0)

Hello I am seasoned RN last worked ICU and Medical Step down Unit. I was involved in a MVA and has been off work since 2016. However, my physician has said I am able to work just with out lifting, pulling, or pushing anything greater than 10-15 pounds. Which lead me to be terminated after being off work over a year because the hospital could not accommodate my restrictions. I am interested in doing some home nursing can you help me find something I may be able to perform at home. Thank you.

Thanks for the helpful advice! How difficult is it to land a Case Management position with no previous experience? I have a BSN, have worked in nursing since 2002 in many different areas, and yet it seems I am having difficulty finding a work from home position. I have always wanted to work in Case Management, which is one of the reasons I went back to school. But I don’t have all the certifications these companies seem to require. Finding it frustrating and beginning to think that a work at home position is out of reach…

With more workers desiring full-time remote work and companies aiming to increase in-office presence, it's increasingly challenging to stand out for remote positions and competitive pay.

Keith Spencer, Career Expert at FlexJobs highlights that "In today’s competitive remote job market, it’s important to take an intentional and strategic approach throughout your job search in order to stand out from other candidates. Begin by identifying and targeting roles closely aligned with your skills and experience. Then, research companies that hire for those types of roles and have a strong remote work culture.”

FlexJobs compiled the list by analyzing its database and identifying the fully remote roles companies have been hiring for most between February 1 and July 30, 2024, and pay an average of $100K or more, according to Payscale.

How to Maximize the Visibility of your Resume

Spencer also recommends tailoring your resume and cover letter to each job by emphasizing your most relevant and impactful abilities and accomplishments, incorporating quantifiable metrics.

Optimizing your resume for an applicant tracking system (ATS) is also essential, as recruiters use this to automate the recruitment process.

To improve your chances of passing through an ATS, it’s important to:

  • Use keywords from the job description in your resume.
  • Format your resume in a simple, ATS-friendly layout (e.g., avoid complex designs, images, and tables).
  • Include relevant skills and qualifications prominently to match the ATS screening criteria.

How to Stand Out in Remote Job Interviews

Make sure you prepare for the interviews thoroughly. Spencer highlights the importance of “studying the job description and anticipating questions specific to the role and how you will perform the job as a remote employee. It can be particularly helpful to conduct a mock interview, ideally with someone with remote hiring experience, or even leverage AI tools to review potential role-specific questions. It’s also beneficial to think about the stories and examples from your experience that you might want to share during an interview. Talk about your most relevant and applicable traits, abilities, and successes demonstrating how well you can perform the job, especially when operating in a remote environment.”

Connect to the interview at least 10 minutes early to familiarize yourself with the platform you will be using for the connection. Finally, after the interview, send a personalized thank-you email expressing your continued interest in the position and explaining why you are the best candidate for the job.

Meeting regularly with a career coach while job hunting offers significant benefits. A coach provides personalized guidance, helping you refine your resume, improve interview skills, and strategize your job search. Regular sessions ensure accountability, keeping you focused and motivated.

Landing a remote job that pays $100K+ requires a combination of the right skills, experience, and strategy. By focusing on in-demand roles and following the tips outlined above and meeting regularly with your career coach, you can position yourself for success in the remote job market.
