Black bear scratches arm of teen girl taking trash out in Kittitas County

ROSLYN, Wash. — An adult male black bear swiped a 17-year-old girl in the arm, causing "superficial scratches and torn clothing" in Kittitas County Tuesday night.

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife , the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. in Roslyn, near Cle Elum.

The girl's father wanted to remain anonymous, but shared his teen daughter was taking trash out in the dark at the end of her shift at the Coal Chute Café & Pub. He said there were two vehicles parked in front of the dumpster, so she did not see the bear.

"They didn’t see each other and startled the bear, and it took a swipe at her, we’re just really lucky it wasn’t any worse," he told KOMO News. "It was dark, it just didn’t see or hear her, from where she was at she couldn’t see it and they just ran in face to face in front of the can."

Fish and Wildlife officials said that with assistance from Cle Elum/Roslyn police and the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office, the bear was quickly found nearby and killed. They said forensic evidence was collected and the bear will be transported to the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic lab for further evaluation.

"They picked it up pretty quick after it happened, everybody was here really fast," the victim's father said. "They took a shot and were able to stay with it until it went down which wasn’t very long."

Fish and Wildlife officials said they had to kill the bear because it was clear from evidence at the scene that the bear had gotten used to being fed by human sources like trash cans and dumpsters.

"Unfortunately, once a bear knows about a non-natural food source, they keep coming back for more, and they will potentially lose their fear of humans," said Becky Elder with the Washington State Fish and Wildlife Police.

Just a few weeks prior on July 17, Elder shared there was another incident in town where a homeowner was forced to kill a black bear as it got to their dog.

Neighbors said bear sightings in the area are typical this time of year.

"I’ve had them in my backyard, I’ve had them close, I’ve looked out the window and there they are," said Al Miller, who lives near where the latest incident happened. "People bring out their garbage, the bears will either get into it or not."

Officials and locals are urging residents and visitors to make sure to secure their trash and remove any food sources, like fallen berries in the yard or bird feeders, so they're away from bears outside.

"Not intentionally feeding bears, always keeping trash cans in a garage, or making sure that you have bear-proof containers, or keeping the trash inside until you have the collection day," Elder said.

Some residents who spoke with KOMO News also shared that overflowing trash at nearby campgrounds has also become an issue.

"They either need more cans up there at the campsites or they really have to pack it out, because every weekend there are piles of trash up at the river are out of control and so the bears, it’s just a heyday," the victim's father said.

"We live in nature, as long as we live here, there are bears, there will be encounters," he added. "Everybody needs to be aware, it’s really unfortunate, but getting the attractants under control around here would go a long way to making this a lot less likely."
