Academic Regalia

It is mandatory for graduands to wear academic dress to their Conferring of Awards  ceremony. If you are not wearing appropriate regalia when you register on the day, you will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony.

Academic dress includes: a black robe; a hood/stole in the colour and style associated with your award/s; and a trencher/mortarboard or bonnet (if applicable). If you are having two awards conferred, you will only need to hire/purchase one hood.

The University's preferred provider is Reed Graduation Services.

• Regalia acquired from Reed Graduation Services is guaranteed to be compliant with the Academic and Ceremonial Dress Rule [the University cannot guarantee that regalia from other suppliers will be compliant];
• Reed Graduation Services is the only regalia provider available on-site to assist graduands at Conferring of Awards ceremonies [if your regalia is from an alternate source, staff assistance for dressing will be unavailable on the day].

Completing an award is a significant academic achievement and is rightly celebrated at the University’s prestigious Conferring of Awards ceremonies. Conferring of Awards ceremonies are inspiring events that have both formal and symbolic significance.

Graduation at the college and university level occurs when the presiding officer confers degrees upon candidates, either individually or en masse, even if graduates physically receive their diploma later at a smaller college or departmental ceremony. Not only will the faculty usually wear academic dress at the formal ceremonies, but also the trustees and degree candidates.

Ceremonies for graduating students date from the first universities in Europe in the twelfth century. At that time Latin was the language of scholarship. A “Universitas” was a guild of masters (MAs) with a licence to teach. “Degree” and “graduate” come from gradus , meaning “step”. The first step was admission to a bachelor’s degree. The second step was the masters step, giving the graduate admission to the universitas and license to teach. Typical dress for graduation is not only gown and hood, but also hats adapted from the daily dress of university staff in the Middle Ages, which was in turn based on the attire worn by medieval clergy.

Be sure to follow the laundering instructions on the care label of your garment. 

Our garments come to you pressed and ready-to-wear with minimal creasing from freight. However, we do recommend hanging your garment when not in use and if required, gently iron or steam your robe. (Do not put an iron directly onto any satin lining or facing!)

Every George H Lilley Regalia gown comes with a complimentry robe bag. We recommend using this bag for storeage and travel. Allowing your garment to air regularly will assist to keep your gown in best condition.

Particular care is required if your garment has satin linings or facings. In this case, we recommend that your academic regalia is worn in ceremonies only. Avoid eating or drinking while wearing your regalia as the satin may stain. Take care when handling as pinning or your fingernails could damage the fabric.

Anu graduation booking information, academic regalia, how do i book my academic regalia for the grand graduation.

Please follow the link provided in your ceremony invitation. You will be directed to our website to complete an order to hire your academic regalia.

How do I receive my hired regalia?

Your academic regalia will be available to collect from your ceremony venue 2 hours prior to your ceremony. Regalia cannot be collected or shipped in advance.

How do I ensure that I receive correctly sized regalia?

Our friendly regalia staff will gown you on the day of your ceremony. They will ensure that you are wearing the correct regalia in the correct size and the correct manner.

Professional Portrait Photography Sessions

What is a portrait session, and what does it cover.

A Portrait Session is a professional photography session undertaken by one of our professional photographers. During the session, your photographer will take a range of different shots and poses of the graduate by themselves and extra shots with family and friends. Please note that images are not included in the Portrait Session sitting and are purchasable at additional cost.

Do I get a specific appointment time for a Portrait Photography Session?

No, due to time constraints, we can’t book in a specific time for your sitting. Please register at our customer service desk during studio hours to have your portrait photographs taken.  Please present your Gown Collection Time Booking Ticket when attending our studios.

Can I get my photos taken before/after the ceremony?

Our photography studios are available before and after the ceremony. You can proceed to the photography area as soon as you have your gown, and immediately after the ceremony.

Please notify the Australian National University graduation office if you or your guests require special assistance by submitting an online enquiry .

After Graduation

How do i view my photos online.

• Visit anu.reedgraduations.com.au
• Click on the ‘View/Order portrait images’ circle.
• Enter your 'G' reference code from your studio session booking and then click GO.
• Your images will appear in a slide show format. Use the arrows to scroll through the images. 

If you receive the message “Sorry, please try another code”, your photographs may still be uploading. Please allow 5 business days from graduation day for the images to be available to view. If you continue to have trouble after this period, please contact our staff at [email protected] 

How do I order my photos online?

• Enter your 'G' reference code from your Portrait Session booking, then click 'GO'.
• Your images will appear in a slide show format. Click ‘order photos’ to start your order.
• Choose from the three options above the image: ‘Select a print’, ‘Select a canvas’ OR ‘Select a digital copy’. 
• Use the side arrows to click through to your desired image. (There are artistic effects and framing options available underneath the image.) 
• Click ‘add to cart’. You can then choose to continue selecting more photographs, or continue to checkout.
• If you haven’t already done so, you will need to create an account with us. This way we can save your shipping address and contact details for any future purchases.
• Follow the prompts to checkout. A receipt will be emailed as confirmation.

How do I download the Digital Pack?

• Go to our website and login to your account . 
• Then click 'My Account' in the top right corner and then from the dropdown menu. 
• On the order summary page, click the black 'View' button beside your order with the Digital Pack.  
• Then scroll down the receipt, and underneath the Digital Pack sample photo, you will see a 'Download' button. 
• From this link, you will be able to save the images to your computer. The images can be downloaded multiple times, if necessary.

How long before I receive my order?

Reed Graduation Services is dedicated to providing only the absolute highest level of quality. Your printed images will be thoughtfully re-touched, carefully packaged and dispatched to your door or post office approximately 4 weeks after ordering.  Digital images are available online instantly after you place your order. Framed images can take up to 6 weeks due to the nature of creating custom frames.

Can my order be delivered overseas?

Yes, we deliver the majority of our products worldwide. At this stage, we do not offer international shipping for framed photographs. 

How is my order sent?

Your order is sent via Australia Post and is packaged securely to avoid any damage.

What is a canvas print?

A canvas print is a photograph printed on textured artist canvas rather than traditional photo paper. Canvas is a high-quality material that gives a similar effect to a painting.  Your canvas will arrive rolled in a heavy-duty packing cylinder.

For physical items, the postage fee ranges from $15 - $30 within Australia. Overseas postage is calculated based on the product item and destination.
