Only your instructor can view the content you add.

Not ready to submit?  Select Save and Close to save your work and continue later. Your text, comments, and files are saved on the page. When you return, you can resume working.

Submit your assignment . Finished? Select Submit when you're ready for your instructor to grade your work. When you submit, a panel appears with the date and time you made the submission. Select the View Submission link at the bottom of the panel to review your submission.  When you finish your assignment, you must select Submit. If you don't, your instructor won't receive your completed assignment.

Note: The Submit button is disabled until you add content or answer at least one question.

Here are a few pointers when working on assignments:

  • Pay close attention to the assignment instructions. The requirements may vary from course to course, and assignment to assignment.
  • A rubric may be available to you so that you are aware of how you are being graded. If this is the case, make sure you review it carefully before starting your submission.
  • If you can submit an assignment more than once, take advantage of your teacher's revise-and-review process.
  • Submit your assignment in the file formats your teacher requested.

When to use a Blackboard Ultra assignment

You can use a blackboard ultra assignment when:.

  • Your students are submitting individually or as a group;
  • Your students are submitting single or multiple files;
  • Your students are submitting any type of file, including large files, and video and audio files;
  • You want to upload an external file as part of your feedback to your students, or to give video feedback.
  • NEW You want to use the new Turnitin integration to check students' work for originality.

You cannot use a Blackboard Ultra assignment if:

  • It is imperative that you mark your students' work anonymously*.

*While Blackboard Ultra assignments do allow the option to hide student names during marking, this is not recommended because a permanent paper ID is not generated, which means that it is not possible to keep a record of which pieces of work were internally moderated. Additionally, it is not possible to de-anonymise individual submissions where academic misconduct is suspected. For these reasons, anonymous marking is only recommended when using Turnitin assignments .

This guide explains how to set up a Blackboard Assignment. It covers all the recommended settings and steps to ensure the assignment runs smoothly for both staff and students throughout the submission and grading electronically process.

To help your students understand the process, please add a link to the student guide in your Ultra course: Submitting a Blackboard Assignment - Student guide.

Student guide: Blackboard Ultra assignment submission

This guide will explain how to submit to a Blackboard Ultra assignment submission point, check submitted work and access feedback / grading.

Please also visit the following Blackboard help pages for the most up to date and detailed guidance;  Bb Ultra Assignment help pages.

It is the student’s responsibility to check that documents have uploaded properly onto Blackboard Ultra, otherwise penalties for late submission will apply. We strongly advise that you familiarise yourself with this Blackboard Ultra submission guide well in advance of your assignment deadlines.

Ensure a file is not still open on your device when you choose to upload it. If it is open this can result in issues with uploading correctly.

Essential guidance

  • If possible, do not submit work just before any deadline is due. This will ensure you have given yourself enough time to resolve issues / contact the relevant staff contact if you encounter any technical issues or have any queries about the assignment.
  • Ensure you have read all assignment instructions and descriptions, as well as potential additional instructions received via other staff communications (such as via course announcements or accompanying documents).
  • Ensure you submit assignments from a stable internet connection from a laptop / PC. Do not attempt to submit work from a mobile device (browser or via the Bb app).
  • Do not use Internet Explorer. Please see the following help page for further browser guidance; Bb browser guidance .

File format and size

  • Only Word ( .doc  and  .docx ) and Acrobat ( .pdf ) file formats should be used for text based assignments. If you are not using Microsoft Word to create your document then you may need to ‘save as’  and select either the  .doc, .docx  or  .pdf file format as the file type for your document to be saved as.
  • It is good practice to use a concise naming convention for your documents. Keep file names as concise as possible while still being meaningful (there is a maximum limit to file names in Blackboard). Only use dashes (-) or underscores (_) for punctuation. Characters such as ampersands (&) or + signs will cause problems when uploaded, usually resulting in an error. Instead of punctuation, you could capitalise the first letter of each individual word in the file name, this makes file names without spaces easy to read e.g., ThisIsMyFile.doc. Examples of good file names: EssayTitle_draft.doc, myFileNameFINAL.docx, essay-title_final.pdf.
  • You can check and reduce the size of your work. This may be necessary when submitting files to Blackboard.
  • You can check on the size of your existing files by: PC  – hover your mouse pointer over a file to see the current file size, or right click on the file and choose  properties . Mac – click on a file to select it and use ⌘ + i
  • You can resize images before embedding them into your work. Please access the following links to some quick guides on how to do this with several common applications; Resize using Microsoft Paint , Resize using GIMP (free software) , Resize using PIXLR (free online app). You can also reduce PDF file size. Please access the following link for further guidance;  reduce PDF file size.
  • File size compression may result in some loss of quality so be careful about compressing too much. It may require a bit of trial and error to get the right balance between file size and quality.

Contact information

If you have a logistical query such as about assignment deadlines / assignment content,  please contact the assignment owner. Owners may include the relevant academic, or the Programme Delivery team ( [email protected] , [email protected] , [email protected] ), or the Assessments team ( [email protected] for Undergraduate, [email protected] for Postgraduate). If you have a technical query please contact the Learning Enhancement and Systems team at [email protected] .

Please be aware that submission point settings can vary and this guide does not cover all setting variations. Access to a submission point and to any feedback and grading can also be restricted at certain points of the assignment workflow.

Please also contact the assignment owner if you have any additional accommodations you wish to discuss outside of standard assignment settings / workflows.

Step 2: Access a submission point

Access a submission point

  • Click on the following link to access HYMS Blackboard Learn Ultra:  https://blackboard.hyms.ac.uk

Blackboard sign in page

  • Search and select the relevant course / organisation from the listed content / by using the search engine.

Bb example submission link

  • Click on start an attempt . You will then be directed to the assignment submission page.

Please check in the details and information panel before you start if you will be able to attempt more than once and / or if there is a time limit restriction once you start.

Bb example submission box

We do not advise that you save work and return to the submission point later to submit. We advise you complete all steps during one attempt.

Bb submit assignment option

Step 4: Essential step - check your submission

Check submission

It is the student’s responsibility to check they are satisfied with any documents uploaded and that they have submitted correctly. Penalties may apply for incorrect or late submission.

As mentioned in the previous step, at the end of the submission process, a ‘success’ message will appear after you click on the submit button. This indicates successful upload. However, there are additional checks you now need to complete.

Bb example submitted work link

Please ensure you check details such as the submission size in the receipt- that this is as expected. In particular, that there has been no error during upload resulting in an issue such as an empty document upload (the submission size would say ‘0 bytes’ if this had occurred).

Step 5: Access feedback and grading

Feedback and grading

Bb feedback and grading

If you are a postgraduate student:

If you are a postgraduate student, you will find your marks and grading within the rubric. To find the rubric:

  • Navigate to the Gradebook in the course.

blackboard ultra assignment submission

  • Once you have selected view submission your submission with the mark will appear as in the image below. Navigate to the ‘rubric’ on the right-hand side of the page.

Tests & Assignments

Assignment grade settings, enable anonymous grading.

You can enable anonymous grading for assignments and tests that don't contain the built-in question types. You may add only text and files to anonymously graded assignments and tests.

Student names are hidden while you grade and are revealed only after you post all grades.

Enable Parallel Grading

You can have specific users in your courses grade sets of assignment submissions. Graders can't see other graders' grades, feedback, annotations on student files, and rubrics. They grade in parallel and provide provisional grades. The default grading roles include instructors, graders, and teaching assistants.

The instructor role is the default final grader or reconciler. The reconciler reviews the provisional grades and determines the final grades that students see. You can assign the ability to reconcile grades to one or more other users with grading privileges and remove your ability to reconcile.

See the Assignment Grade Settings help article for more information about anonymous and parallel grading.

Create and Edit Assignments

Create an assignment.

Assignments are always available to instructors in the Ultra Course View.

You can create assignments alongside other content. Students can access their work next to the content they need, right when they need it. You can also create a group assignment and release it to one or more groups in your course.

See the Create and Edit Assignments help article or view the Create an Assignment video for more information.

New Assignment Page Settings

You can set the different assignment components to customize your assignment. Provide a descriptive title so students can easily find the assignment among your course content. On the Course Content page, the title appears as the link students select to view the materials. If you don't add a title, "New Assignment" and the date appear in the content list. If you don't add content, the assignment won't appear on the Course Content page.

See the New Assignment Page Settings help article for more information.

Add Files and Text blocks to Assignments

Select the plus sign to open the menu wherever you want to  add questions , text, or a file. You can add as many text blocks and files as you want.

See the Add Files and Text Blocks to Assignments help article for details.

Add a Time Limit to Assignments

You can add a time limit to an assignment in the Ultra Course View. A time limit can keep students on track and focused on the assignment because each person has a limited amount of time to submit. The assignment attempts are saved and submitted automatically when time is up.

You can also allow students to work past the time limit. Additional time allows students to reconnect if they lose connectivity during their attempts. You can allow extra time to see if the original time you set is enough for students to complete the assignment. When you grade assignments, you can see how much extra time each student used to complete the assignment. If you included questions, you can also see which questions were answered after the initial time limit. Students also see this same information when they access their graded assignments.

At this time, you can't add a time limit to group assignments.

See the Create and Edit Assignments help article for more information.

Edit, Reorder, and Delete Assignments

You can make changes to existing assignments and change where they appear on your Course Content page. Be aware that if you change an existing assignment that students can access, some students may have started their submissions. You can't change the grading schema if you've already started grading.

Allow Multiple Attempts

In Assignment Settings, you can choose to let students submit more than one attempt. Multiple attempts change how the assignment's final grade is calculated. Choose how you want to calculate the final grade:

  • Average of all attempts
  • First attempt with a grade
  • Attempt with highest grade
  • Last attempt with a grade
  • Attempt with lowest grade

See the Multiple Attempts help article for more information.

Create Group Assignments

Collaborative learning offers many benefits over traditional instruction. Studies show that when students work as a team, they develop positive attitudes, solve problems more effectively, and experience a greater sense of accomplishment.

You create a group assignment nearly the same way you create assignments for students to complete individually. Gradebook items are created automatically.

See the Group Assignments help article or view the Create Group Assignments video for more information.

Create Offline Assignments (such as oral presentations or lab work)

You can create assessments that appear on the Course Content page that don't require students to upload submissions. You can add instructions, files, a rubric, and goals so students can prepare for the offline work. You can also enable conversations, but you can't add questions or grade anonymously.

Examples of offline work:

  • Oral presentations
  • Science fair projects
  • Acting performances
  • Artwork delivered in person
  • Face-to-face team building exercises, panel discussions, and debates

See the Collect Submissions Offline help article for more information.

Download Assignments

To accelerate your grading process, you can download students' assessment submissions and view them offline. You can download all or only selected submissions as a single ZIP file. Unzip or expand the file to view the contents. Each submission is saved as a separate file with each student's username.

You can download the content and files that students create and attach in the editor for their submissions.

You can't download content and files attached to assessment questions. For example, if an assessment has only Essay questions, students' answers aren't downloaded. You also can't download discussions, group work, or anonymous submissions.

See the Download Assignments help article or view the Download Assessment Submissions video for more information.

Grade Assignments

You can't hide or show student names after students open an assignment or test or submit attempts.

When you hide names, you can't add questions, reuse questions, or select these settings:

  • Allow class conversations
  • Collect submissions offline
  • Assign to groups

See the Anonymous Grading help article for more information.

Enable Parallel Grading (formerly called Delegated Grading)

You can have specific users in your courses grade sets of assignment submissions. Graders can't see other graders' grades, feedback, annotations on student files, and rubrics. They grade in parallel and provide provisional grades. The default grading roles include instructors, graders, and teaching assistants.

The instructor role is the default final grader or reconciler. The reconciler reviews the provisional grades and determines the final grades that students see. You can assign the ability to reconcile grades to one or more other users with grading privileges and remove your ability to reconcile.

See the Enable Parallel Grading help article for more information.

Assignment Inline Grading

You can choose where you want to start grading!

Want to see how many assignments are ready to grade in all your courses? In the list where your name appears, you have immediate access to all your courses' grading tasks on the global Grades page. All your grading tasks are organized by course. You can quickly scan your progress, set priorities across the board, and even begin grading. No need to navigate to each course to see what's ready for grading.

The page only displays information if you need to take action. You see assignments that are ready to grade or which assignments are overdue for how many students.

Want to narrow your focus? In a course, you can access the course gradebook on the navigation bar. You can see who has made submissions and start grading.

From the activity stream, you're alerted when student submissions are ready for grading. Select the link to go to the gradebook. Or, select an assignment on the Course Content page to see how many students have made submissions.

See the Assignment Inline Grading help article or view the Grading Assignments video for more information.

Grade Group Assignments

After groups submit their assignments, you can access their work from the gradebook or within the course. Assign the same grade to the whole group or grade each team member's contribution separately if everyone didn't contribute equally. You can't change grade settings or group membership after you've started grading.

See the Grade Group Assignments help article for more information.

Best Practices for Group Assessment

A group is a team. Whether you assign students to groups or students select their teammates, hopefully, most students will feel committed to a common goal. Individual accountability is essential for a group to work effectively and produce worthwhile results. When each member of a group receives the same grade, personal accountability becomes an issue.

You may find it a challenge to determine individual grades for a group project. Some instructors assign all members the same grade on their group assignment. This eliminates competition within the group and keeps the focus on collaboration. To lessen students' concern over a shared grade, be sure the group grade is only a small percentage of their total grades.

Or, you can use a variety of assignments to grade each student's contribution. You can ask for peer evaluations, and review each member's test scores, surveys, and reflective writing assignments.

With peer assessment, students participate in the evaluation process. They comment on and judge each group member's work. You can use the feedback to add a participation grade or bonus points to reward group members who fulfilled the outlined requirements.

If group members are aware in advance that they'll have to rate their peers, students may feel a greater sense of involvement and responsibility. The team may produce a higher quality end product and learn more when they know that their evaluators are working alongside them. You can use peer assessment as part of the collaborative process, and not just as a survey submitted at the end when no opportunity for improvement is possible. You can ask for quick checks of how the collaborative process is working.

Ultimately, when you assign a grade for a group's achievement and the contributions of the individual members, consider these questions:

How has the group evaluated its success and each other? Does the group deliverable meet the assignment's requirements?

See the Best Practice: Group Assessment help article for more information.

Add Rubrics

Rubrics can help ensure consistent and impartial grading and help students focus on your expectations.

A rubric is a scoring tool you can use to evaluate graded work. When you create a rubric, you divide the assigned work into parts. You can provide clear descriptions of the characteristics of the work associated with each part, at varying levels of skill.

Students can use a rubric to organize their efforts to meet the requirements of the graded work. When you allow students access to rubrics before they complete their work, you provide transparency into your grading methods.

See the Rubrics help article or watch the Create Rubrics video for more information.

Multiple Assignment Attempts

Multiple attempts can help students stay on track, raise the quality of assignments, and ultimately improve student success and retention. Students can submit drafts and earn credit on improvements. Inform students which assignments allow multiple attempts, and what the expectations and grading policies are for each attempt.

See the Multiple Assignment Attempts help article for more information.

Self and Peer Assessment

Part of a student’s well-rounded learning experience is to take an active role in group activities, group projects, and group presentations. Even though you would expect all group members to be equally involved, we know that some students will do more than others. To find out how well each of the students performed in the group and to round out the “group experience,” allow students to assess the performance of their group. Often, the group is asked to assess each other’s performance using guidelines or a rubric which allows for both quantitative and qualitative feedback. In addition to the peer feedback, each group member could also reflect on their own performance within the group. When combined with the instructor’s assessment, peer- and self-assessment can provide a more comprehensive picture of a student’s performance.

Peer Review for Qualitative Peer Assessments

Peer assessment is a common resource that allows students to review their peers' work through criteria-based evaluation.  It's simple for instructors and students to use.

See the Peer Review for Qualitative Peer Assessments help article or watch the Peer Assessments video for information on why and how to use Peer Assessments.

Preview, Evaluate, and Manage Self and Peer Assessments

You can see the student perspective and how they complete an assessment and evaluate their peers.

You can preview an assessment in two ways from the Assessment Canvas page:

  • Choose Submission to view what students see when they initially access the assessment. To preview a question, select its name.
  • Choose Evaluation to view what students see when they evaluate their peers' assessments or their own.

Preview pages are read-only. You can't make edits.

See the Preview, Evaluate and Manage Self and Peer Assessments help article for more information.

Use SafeAssign in Assignments

SafeAssign compares submitted assignments against a set of academic papers to identify areas of overlap between the submitted assignment and existing works.

SafeAssign is effective as both a deterrent and an educational tool. Use SafeAssign to review assignment submissions for originality and create opportunities to help students identify how to properly attribute sources rather than paraphrase.

SafeAssign is based on a unique text matching algorithm capable of detecting exact and inexact matching between a paper and source material. Submissions are compared against several databases.

See the Use SafeAssign in Assignments help article for more information.

In the Blackboard mobile app, assignment instructions for Original courses show after students begin an attempt.

Drag files from your computer to the "hot spot" in the Attach Files area. If your browser allows, you can also drag a folder of files. The files will upload individually. If the browser doesn't allow you to submit your assignment after you upload a folder, select Do not attach in the folder's row to remove it. You can drag the files individually and submit again.

You won't be able to drag files to upload if your institution uses an older version of Blackboard Learn.

You can use the file name or provide another name for the file.

  • Optionally, select a Due Date . Assignments with due dates automatically show in the course calendar and in the To Do module. Submissions are accepted after this date but are marked late. If you don’t want students to access an assignment after the due date, choose the appropriate display dates.

If you set the points possible to a non-whole number, letter grades may not be assigned correctly.

  • Optionally, add a rubric . Expand the sections to make selections such as anonymous grading, how the grade is displayed, and the number of attempts. You can allow more than one attempt on an assignment.
  • Make the assignment available when you're ready for students to access it. Select the appropriate options for availability, tracking, and display dates. Display dates don't affect an assignment's availability, only when it appears.
  • Select Submit .

Video: Create an assignment explains how to create an assignment.

Late assignments

When you assign a due date for an assignment, students can still submit attempts after the date passes. Submissions after the due date are marked late. If you penalize late submissions, inform students in the assignment instructions.

You can view the late label in these areas:

  • Student's submission page in the grade panel
  • Student's Grade Details page
  • Needs Grading page

From the Grade Center, you can also view a list of all submissions with the Assignment File Download option in an assignment's menu. View who has submitted, submission dates, and the grading statuses. You can sort by date to easily see who submitted after the due date.

If you don’t want students to access an assignment after the due date, choose the appropriate display dates. Inform students that you won’t accept submissions after the due date and the assignment will no longer be available.

Students see the late label after they make a submission after the due date.

Student assignment submission confirmations

When students submit assignments successfully, the Review Submission History page appears with information about their submitted assignments and a success message with a confirmation number. Students can copy and save this number as proof of their submissions and evidence for academic disputes. For assignments with multiple attempts, students receive a different number for each submission. If your institution has enabled email notifications for submission receipts, students will also receive an email with a confirmation number and other details for each submission.

You and your students won't be able to view confirmation numbers if your institution uses Blackboard Learn 9.1 Q4 2016 or earlier. Student email notifications and student access to receipt history were introduced in Blackboard Learn 9.1 Q2 2017.

You and your administrators have a retrievable record in the system even if an attempt, assignment, or student is later deleted. These records are maintained in the course and also retrievable after the archive and restore process.

You can access all of your students' confirmation numbers from the Grade Center. Open the Reports menu and select Submission Receipts .

On the Submission Receipts page, you can view information for each assignment, such as who submitted and when. Group assignments are also logged and the Submitter column lists who submitted for the group. In the Submission column, view if a student submitted a file or wrote the submission in the assignment's editor.

Use the menus at the top of the page to filter the items. In the second menu, select Not blank and leave the search box empty to show all of the submission receipts. Select a column heading to sort the items.

Edit, reorder, and delete assignments

You can edit, reorder, and delete your assignments. Change the order of assignments with the drag-and-drop function or the keyboard accessible reordering tool. For example, reorder the assignments to keep the current one at the top.

From an assignment's menu, select on option:

  • Move an assignment to another location in your course. When you move an assignment, it's removed from its original location. You can't copy an assignment.
  • Edit an assignment. If you change the instructions, students who have already made submissions will see the new instructions only on subsequent attempts.
  • Apply release criteria, tracking, metadata, and review status.

More on options you can apply

Delete assignments

You can delete an assignment from a course area and if no student submissions exist, the Grade Center column is also deleted.

When you delete an assignment that has student submissions, you also delete all the submissions. You have two options:

  • Preserve the scores in the Grade Center, but delete the assignment and all submissions. Though the scores remain in the Grade Center, you can't access the students' submissions again. The action is irreversible.
  • Delete the assignment, the Grade Center column, all assigned grades, and all submissions. The action is irreversible.

Alternatively, make the gradable item unavailable in your course to preserve the submissions and the scores in the Grade Center.
