Most empirical studies of m-banking seek to understand the factors and motivations that influence the adoption or behaviour intention. The purpose of this paper is to focus on analysing and synthesising existing studies and make recommendations to researchers and practitioners.

Design/methodology/approach

Few papers focus on the m-banking use and individual performance, but on the determinants of adoption measures, instead. This research examines 64 journal articles published between 2002 and 2016 in top journals. Following a comprehensive review of the literature, the authors propose a research agenda.

The importance of use and individual performance has long been recognised by academics and practitioners in a variety of functional disciplines. The present review indicates that the topics of m-banking adoption and behavioural intention dominate the majority of research, but finds very few studies on post-adoption. The two most significant drivers of intentions to adopt m-banking are perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Considering several m-banking definitions, the authors propose a new, broader definition that takes into account the technological changes that have occurred over time. m-banking is a service or product offered by financial institutions that makes use of portable technologies.

Originality/value

This paper assembles this diverse body of knowledge into a coherent whole. The authors expect that this review will be of benefit to anyone interested in m-banking research and that it will help to stimulate further interest. In order to advance research in m-banking, future research should consider other theories uncovered in our findings.

Mobile Money and Payment: a literature review based on academic and practitioner-oriented publications (2001-2011)

The use of mobile technology has become widespread with astonishing speed all over the world, particularly among the poor. The more mobile phones go to the hands of people who formerly lacked access to financial services, the more the notions of mobile money, mobile payment and mobile banking become pervasive as a means of financial inclusion. Although there are more than 120 mobile money projects deployed in about 70 emerging markets (Beshouri et al. 2010), mobile payment has only taken off in a limited number of countries. This failure to disseminate a service with such a huge potential worldwide, shows that the reasons for the successful cases are not clearly understood, and as a result, are not being easily replicated. This paper seeks to fill this knowledge gap by providing a comprehensive literature review, which attempts to analyse significant experiences in this field, especially in developing countries. An investigation has been carried out of both academic, peer-reviewed articles and the available non-peer-reviewed practitioner-oriented publications, (a total of 196 papers – 94 peer-reviewed and 92 non-peer-reviewed – published in the period 2001-2011) to obtain information related to the actors and institutions involved in mobile money initiatives. In other words, the study addresses the following questions: what is the driving-force behind these initiatives, what are the obstacles and the social and economic implications of their implementation. Thus, the aim of this review is to map out the existing knowledge on mobile money by pointing out the main sources of information on the subject, and defining the topics that are most frequently researched. In addition, it examines which locations most studies focus on, and which methodologies are being applied to these studies, as well as the determining factors and contexts of the published studies.

This paper examines the factors that make cash ‘sticky’ in the increasingly digitised Kenyan financial landscapes. On the one hand, it discusses the mismatch between assumptions implicit in the financial inclusion discourse and ideas of saving, accumulation and money enshrined in local financial practices, and provides an overview o f the current digital payment situation in Kenya, in terms o f strategies and data. On the other hand, it draws insights from industry efforts in which industry expectations are tested against a background shaped by the dominance o f cash and traditional financial institutions. The overall goal is to further the understanding of potential drivers and challenges o f ‘cash-lite’ approaches to financial inclusion, as well as the convergence and divergence of theory and evidence. This study uses qualitative methods of data collection to understand the social, cultural and economic drivers o f payment behaviours, and the opportunities and constraints for adoption and acceptance of technology. It argues that the enduring reliance on cash suggests that a rational calculative approach is not adequate to understand people’s decision making when considering different options in a repertoire o f financial alternatives. Most importantly, the materiality of cash affects its pragmatics within a broader repertoire of financial practices revolving around different means of payment and storages o f value. It thus recommends that an approach to the design o f epayment systems should not only be largely ‘open-source’ for ease o f interoperability with other payment systems, but also localised, to converge with local contexts.

Despite its huge potential, the use of mobile technology for carrying out payment transactions and replicating monetary features, has only taken off in a limited number of countries. The fact that mobile payment services are not being provided on a worldwide scale, suggests that the reasons for the successful cases are not yet fully understood, and as a result, cannot be easily replicated. This paper seeks to fill this knowledge gap by providing a comprehensive scoping study, which seeks to map out the literature published between 2001 and 2011. An investigation has been carried out of a total of 94 peer-reviewed papers, with the aim of providing a compre- hensive picture of the knowledge, production and dissemination about mobile payments. Furthermore, this study includes a detailed analysis of 12 primary case studies on existing mobile payment schemes, as well as a consultation exercise with stakeholders. The main contribution of this study is to provide a clear account of the knowledge that exists on mobile payments. As a result, it has been possible to detect serious gaps in this knowledge base (in geographical, methodological and conceptual areas) and show how future research can make improvements in the field. The chapter applies a theoretical frame to sift evidence of impact of mFinance initiatives, broadly including m-banking, m-payments and m-finance. Second, new definitions for measuring impact are proposed inspired by areas in which impact assessment is more advanced, using the pathway of effects framework (Chib, 2011. The first category, input, refers to the use of technology being introduced. The second category, mechanism, relates to the process of user adoption and appropriation. The third category, outputs, comprises the process outcomes and end-user benefits in the concerned area. The research questions interrogated are: • How is impact conceptualized in the mFinance literature? • What is the evidence so far of this impact? • What alternative definitions of impact can be proposed, beyond traditional notions of economic development (i.e. income, savings)? The review of 41 research studies on mFinance in developing countries indicate that were in the mechanism stage; however, the emphasis has moved from technological inputs and measures access. Overall, there is little evidence that mFinance has made a significant impact on the bottom of the pyramid populations.

Abstract This study investigates the effect of financial inclusion on the performance of micro, small and medium size enterprises in Kankia Local Government of Katsina state. The population of the study comprise all the micro small and medium size enterprises operating in Kankia out of which 337 were selected as the sample size of the study. Multiple regression technique of data analysis was employed as a technique of data analysis. The findings of the study indicates that automated teller machine, mobile money, savings and credit facilities have a positive and significant effect on the performance of micro, small and medium size enterprises operating in Kankia metropolitan. Based on the findings of the study, the research therefore recommended that: the owners as well as managers of micro, small and medium size enterprises in Kankia should embrace frequent usage of ATM, save part of their profit, use their mobile phones to transact and access and patronize different credit facilities packages as they were found playing prominent role in improving the performance of micro, small and medium size enterprises.

In this paper we argue that mobile banking offers the opportunity to diminish the financial exclusion suffered by the poor by offering access to credit and to savings which are key tools capable of transforming the livelihoods of the poor as well as the efficiency of the market. However, mobile phones need a complete ecosystem that supports its application to a functioning mobile banking service. The aim of this paper is to contribute to existing knowledge of mobile money across the value chain by providing insight into the mechanisms of m-money, the value propositions within the business of m-banking and what is preventing its swifter adoption and usage in the developing world. We develop a taxonomy of the key drivers of the business model which provides insights for assessing the replicability of these models. We focus on models developed in Kenya, the Philippines, and Brazil and explore what is lacking for a widespread adoption of m-money for the BoP1 in other countries.
