Lessons Learnt from the “3 Idiots” Movie Essay

  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Foreign cinema is that subtype of art that provides an experience that can be considered better in terms of uniqueness than domestic films can deliver. 3 idiots are one such foreign film, and it is filled with Indian visuals, narration, and storytelling. From a classic genre perspective, Hirani’s work can be classified as a comedy. The story of this cinematographic piece represents a traditional journey from myths or a realistic fairy tale with comedic elements. 3 idiots do not contain fantasy elements or episodes; it is a story of the maturing protagonists, Farhan, Raju, and Rancho, and their overcoming of life path hardships related to tertiary education and young adulthood (Hirani, 2009). However, the inspiration taken from Indian and other folktales is visible.

The central idea of 3 idiots is easy to understand and even basic. The story’s lesson about the fictional three Indian students is that true friendship is a source of support, opportunities, and success, and one should stick to it if they have it (Hirani, 2009). There is also an element of novelty, which is the idea that competition is not contrary to friendship and even beneficial, but only if the competition between friends occurs in parallel fields.

3 idiots is also a nearly three-hour introduction for viewers to India’s college culture and societal and gender relationships. Sociologists and cultural academics would especially be interested in the interactions between Viru, students, and his daughters and the revelation of an informal deal between the real Rancho and Phunsukh Wangdu. These plot episodes and scenes show and criticize the socio-economic hierarchy in Delhi and India that is the origin of more inequality and family tragedies such as student suicides (Hirani, 2009). Pia’s character and the micro-plot of her unhappy wedding might draw the attention of scholars of gender studies.

Film Review of 3 Idiots For Students

Description of the 3 idiots film.

The three essential roles of the 3 Idiots film are Aamir Khan as Rancchoddas "Rancho" Shyamaldas Chanchad or Phunsukh Wangdu, R. Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi, Sharman Joshi as Raju Rastogi. They studied engineering at the Imperial College of Engineering and shared a room in a hostel. Apart from them, the additional stars are Kareena Kapoor as Pia, Omi Vaidya as Chatur Ramalingam (Silencer), Boman Irani as Viru Sahastrebuddhe (Virus), Parikshit Sahni as Mr. Qureshi,  and Mona Singh as Mona Sahastrebuddhe (pia’s sister).

The Imperial College of Engineering is one of India's best colleges for engineering studies. Rancho was admitted as a rich man's son in India, while Farhan and Raju are from an average family. Farhan dreamed of being a wildlife photographer, but his father insisted he study engineering because it was his wish. Indeed, Rancho was the son of a gardener.

He irritates his lecturers by giving creative and unique answers. Joy was also a student of the Imperial College of Engineering. She had requested the dean to extend his major project on the compassionate grounds that his father had suffered a stroke. But, Virus refused, saying he was utterly unmoved by his son's accidental death after being hit by a train. Rancho condemns the learning system of the institution, blaming it for Lobo's death.

Threatened by Rancho's talent and free spirit, ViruS labels him an "idiot," and he attempts to destroy his friendship with Raju and Farhan. In contrast, (Omi Vaidya) Chatur Ramalingam, or "Silencer," is the model student in the eyes of ViruS, who always wants to get high marks through memorizing rather than understanding.

Film Review: 3 Idiots (2009) by Rajkumar Hirani

short essay on 3 idiots movie

by Eunice Tan

It has been over a decade since the release of “ 3 Idiots ” and it still takes me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Set in the highly reputable (and fictional) Imperial College of Engineering (ICE), the film takes us through India's mentally invigorating education system amidst class inequality and immense societal and familial pressure. Our three idiots – Ranchoddas “Rancho” Shyamaldas Chanchad ( Aamir Khan ), Raju Rastogi ( Sharman Joshi ), and Farhan Qureshi (R Madhavan) navigate the all too familiar rat race with their uplifting motto “All is well”. Witty dialogues, comedic scenes and catchy tunes aside, this didactic film convinces us that life is more than just a race. Highly decorated with awards, the film establishes itself as one of the best in Hindi cinema and the region up till today.

Loosely based on Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone , “3 Idiots” depicts an intertwinement of two plotlines set in the past and present. Upon receiving a phone call from their college rival Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya), Farhan and Raju recount their college days while on the search for Rancho after he inexplicably vanishes after graduation. Gleaning into their past, the film shows us three main archetypes of engineering students in India – one who caved in to parental expectations, one who chases a piece of paper, and one who is passionate and eager to learn. While it is easy to match the characters to the different categories, paying attention to each character's lived experience, be it Farhan's dream of being a wildlife photographer or Raju's filial piety and determination to help his family overcome poverty, prevents us from being complicit in the negation of their identity and agency.

Besides bearing the brunt of old-fashioned teaching methods and rote learning, the engineers-to-be find themselves under the authority of their college director Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani), nicknamed “Virus”. Virus is the embodiment of the rigid and orthodox education system, especially when he dignifies cruel competitions (such as those that contribute to suicide statistics). Rancho is Virus' polar opposite who also stands in stark contrast of the cohort and more significantly, Farhan and Raju. Unlike a vast majority who are held captive to society's unyielding stance that an engineering degree can buy them a stable future, Rancho's motivation is far more liberating. He simply wants to learn.

Under Rancho's intellect and humility, the trio embarks on roads less travelled, especially those that cross paths with Virus and his daughter Pia Sahastrabuddhe (Kareena Kapoor) whom Rancho falls in love with. Cherishing the opportunity to learn under the disguise of a rich man's son, Rancho exemplifies the idea that learning can take place anywhere. By actively applying what he has internalized in class, Rancho's grades surpass Virus' expectations and will later supersede Chatur's so-called “success”.

Watching Rancho put his knowledge to the test in critical life and death circumstances makes us question the product of the education system Virus was pining for. The film may have also acted as a mirror for viewers to reflect upon their learning attitudes and methods, interrogating our actual abilities to apply what we have learned from our books. Perhaps, many of us have longed to veer off the conventional tangent that does not always make economic sense and perhaps, it is at this juncture that we come to define success in our own terms. Otherwise, we may inevitably perpetuate a perverted standard of success, one that has forced many to their wits' end.

While Aamir Khan's portrayal of Rancho scores the film massive points, the character's overly simplistic solutions may have at times trivialized the struggles of his counterparts. With his impoverished family and severely ill father relying on his examination grades, Raju is understandably under immense stress – to the point where Rancho's optimism may appear as an inability to empathize rather than an encouragement. Still, we have to give Rancho credit for his relentless care towards Raju and his family, teaching us the importance of a strong support system amidst trying times.

Panning to the mise en scène of the film, the crew nailed the cast's outfits where they each represent the personality, socioeconomic status, and cultural background of their character. Not to mention, the bright colors and energetic choreography of the dance sequences almost mimic Rancho's happy-go-lucky outlook and embolden our spirits to match that of Rancho's.

Although “3 Idiots” is littered with the glitz and glamour of Bollywood characteristics and rib-tickling pranks, the lessons it espouses remain applicable especially in countries where mental disorders in students are on a rise. “3 Idiots” is ultimately a feel-good movie that reeks of hope even in the direst circumstances. While we may not always be able to overcome systems of power, the simple lie of “All is well” may be a placebo effect we never knew we needed to transcend difficult situations. The satisfying end to Rancho and Chatur's feud is definitely one that keeps me going back.

3 Idiots -- Film Review

OAKLAND — “Life is a race: If you’re not fast enough, you’ll get trampled,” booms engineering college dean Viru Sahastrabudhhe (Boman Irani). The stakes are high: in India 2.0, students whose parents have sacrificed everything for their education are expected to reach the top. But three brainy misfits — Farhan (R. Madhavan), Raju (Sharman Joshi) and Rancho (Aamir Khan) — find a common bond when they realize that their futures aren’t exactly inscribed in a mathematics book.

Written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, whose two previous films also tweaked Indian sensibilities with great commercial and critical success, “3 Idiots” has dominated at the boxoffice this holiday season. In India, the Reliance Big Pictures release collected more than 1 billion rupees ($21.3 million) in its first four days of release.

A great part of the film’s appeal is Aamir Khan, who has come to specialize in heroic iconoclasts, such as a rebellious villager in “Lagaan” or a visionary teacher of special-needs kids in “Taare Zameen Par.” As Rancho, a young engineer of dazzling inventiveness, Khan conveys smarts, mischief and, finally, compassion, as he spurs his friends on to greatness before he mysteriously disappears.

The film’s good points, though, are marred by a slow start and a nerve-jangling soundtrack (except for the charming “Aal Izz Well”). Perceptive, subtle acting work by Khan, Madhavan and Joshi also clashes with buffoonish performances by Omi Vaidya, as an odious school rival, and veteran character actor Irani, whose character is cursed with an unnecessary — and unfunny — lisp.

Hirani’s screenplay also jumps back and forth in time over a 10-year period with limited success, leaving the viewer often wondering whether we’re seeing scenes set in the present or the past.

Despite its flaws, “3 Idiots” conveys a powerful message about how valuable your friends can be when they push you toward reaching your own highest potential.

And then then raju and faran also reach there. The hug each other. Then pia ask him his real name. He reply's "phunsukh wangdoo" the greatest scientist whom chatur is searching desperately. Chatur also reach there and he tells that he is the winner of the bet so he deserves the pen which given to Rancho by Virus. • In the present day, Farhan receives a call from Chatur, saying that Ranchi is coming. Farhan is so excited that he fakes a heart attack to get off a flight and picks up Raju from his home (who forgets to wear his pants). Farhan and Raju meet Chatur at the water tower of their college ICE (Imperial College of Engineering), where Chatur informs them that he has found Rancho. Chatur taunts Farhan and Raju that now he has a mansion worth $3.5 million in the US, with a heated swimming pool, a maple wood floor living room and a Lamborghini for a car. Chatur reveals that Rancho is in Shimla. 10 years ago, Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan) and his friends, Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), and Ranchodas "Rancho" Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan) are students at the Imperial College of Engineering, one of the best colleges in India. Man Mohan (Rahul Kumar) (MM) is the odd jobs boy at the college and is nicknamed Millimeter. Chatur was their classmate, who was born in Uganda and studied in Pondicherry. He doesn't understand Hindi very well. Rancho displays his presence of mind when he avoids ragging by electrocuting his senior, when he comes to urinate on his door. Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer but is pursuing an engineering degree to fulfill his father's wish, whereas Raju needs to improve his family's financial situation (Raju also prays excessively to all known Gods to secure his good grades and a bright future), and Rancho studies for the pleasure of building machines. Rancho incurs the wrath of college's dean, Professor Viru Sahastrabuddhe a.k.a. 'Virus' (Boman Irani), by giving creative and unorthodox answers in class. Virus espouses the competitive mentality of educational institutions and says that his son failed to get into ICE after 3 attempts. He is proud of an astronaut pen, developed by NASA, and given to him by his dean as a symbol of excellence. Virus was told to pass on the pen to the brilliant mind he encounters in his life. But Rancho asks why the astronauts not use a pencil. Rancho loved machines and constantly experimented with them. Joy Lobo was a fellow student who shared his passion for innovation. Virus threatens Joy that he will fail the course as he has not submitted his assignments on time. Joy says that he is creating Quad copter and is very close to solving the problem. Virus refuses to grant any leeway to Lobo. Rancho blames the rote-learning mentality of the institution for the suicide of Joy Lobo (Ali Fazal). Virus is blunt to Rancho and says that he lost his own son on a weekend and yet he delivered a lecture in the college on Monday. Livid with Rancho, Virus writes to Farhan and Raju's parents and informs them that they are not in good company with Rancho. Farhan's father Salim (Parikshit Sahni) tells Rancho about all the sacrifices he made to fund Farhan's engineering journey. Rancho realizes that Farhan is a great photographer, but is asked to leave when he suggests to Salim that Farhan should be a wildlife photographer. At Raju's house, his parents live in abject poverty and rely on Raju to pull them out of their mess. Virus's model student is Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya), called "Silencer" for his silent but malodorous farts. Virus wants Farhan and Raju to bunk in Chatur's room. Raju is swayed as he knows that he is the only hope for prosperity for his family. Rancho humiliates Chatur by replacing praise with an obscenity in the speech memorized by Chatur for delivery before the authorities on Teacher's Day. Chatur is humiliated and that night he challenges Rancho to meet 10 years later at the water tower to compare the outcome of their life. Meanwhile, Rancho falls in love with Virus's medical student daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor). Rancho meets Pia at her sister Mona's (Mona Singh) wedding. Pia is engaged to Suhas (Olivier Lafont) who is a very brand conscious individual. Rancho proves to Pia that Suhas has no interest in her and is only interested in marrying her for his own image. Raju realizes his mistake when Rancho brings his sick father to the hospital by borrowing Pia's scooter. The doctors agree that he would have died if Rancho had waited for an ambulance. Despite everything, Raju and Farhan are at the bottom of their class and Rancho tops it. In the class photo, Rancho bets Virus that his friends Farhan and Raju will land a job in the campus placements. The tensions escalate when the three friends break into Virus's house at night so Rancho can propose his own marriage to Pia (Kareena Kapoor). Virus hears the boys escaping but only finds Raju drunk in class. The next day, Virus threatens to expel Raju, who, unable to choose between betraying his friend and disappointing his family, attempts his own death. After extensive care by Pia and his friends, he awakes from a coma. Afterward, Farhan pursues photography by seeking an internship with a famous wildlife photographer in Hungary. Farhan goes home and convinces his father that he will be happier as a wildlife photographer. While Raju gives eccentric answers to an interview and refuses to compromise on his values. Both manage to get jobs despite Virus's challenge that no one will give them jobs. Virus vows to make the course's final exam as hard as possible so that Raju is unable to graduate. Pia, in reply, tells Rancho of the exam, and he and Farhan steal the examination's questions for Raju who refuses to cheat. Virus finds out that the 3 friends have stolen the papers & sentences them to expulsion. When Virus gets home, Pia confronts him that her brother also committed suicide due to Virus, as he wanted to be a writer and not an engineer. The boys earn a reprieve when Viru's pregnant elder daughter Mona (Mona Singh) goes into labor. A heavy storm cuts electricity and the roads are flooded due to which Virus is not able to get Mona to the hospital. Pia instructs Rancho to deliver the baby in the college common room via Voice over IP, after Rancho restores power using car batteries and a power Inverter invented by Rancho. After the baby is apparently stillborn, Rancho resuscitates it; wherefore Virus allows them to take and pass their final exams. Rancho comes first and is awarded Virus's prize pen, retained for an especially capable student. Their story is framed as intermittent flashbacks from the present day, ten years afterward, in which Raju and Farhan are in search of Rancho. They are joined by Chatur, now a wealthy businessman, looking to seal a deal with scientist Phunsukh Wangdu who has 400 patents under his name. At the house ascribed to Rancho in Shimla, they discover another individual (Jaaved Jaffrey) under that name (and whose photo was in the class picture instead of Rancho's), whom they blackmail by seizing his father's ashes and threatening to flush them down a toilet. Thus threatened, the householder reveals that their friend was an orphan servant boy who loved learning, while he himself disliked it, wherefore the family sent the servant to study in his master's place, until graduation, where-after the master pockets the qualifications and the benefits thereof, while the impersonator becomes a schoolteacher in Ladakh. Farhan decides to inform Pia and finds that Pia is getting married to Suhas. Raju and Farhan confront Pia and tell her that they know Rancho's location and convince her to come with them. Raju and Farhan then take Pia to Ladakh, where they see inventions resembling those of their friend. When the latter's friends ask his real name, he identifies himself as Phunsukh Wangdu, Chatur's prospective business partner. Upon learning this, Chatur is horrified and begs Phunsukh to establish the business relationship, apparently to no effect.

7 Lessons we can learn from 3 Idiots

Soumik Sinha

3 Idiots is one of the best educational movies in the Indian film industry. This movie is directed by Rajkumar Hirani which is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone: What not to do at IIT. The film follows the story of three friends (Rancho, Farhan, Raju) studying in an Indian engineering college and is a satire about the social pressures under the present Indian education system. We can learn many valuable lessons from this movie.

Chase excellence and success will follow you

In the 3 Idiots movie, Professor Veeru Shastra Buddhi is a Director of the Imperial College of Engineering (ICE). Professor Veeru thought that success can be attained only if one achieves good results by studying engineering. On the other hand, Rancho felt that we should try to do our job with dedication so that we can be able to do it. You are the only one who can do that because you have the devotion and love to do it. This is the key to success!

Don’t chase success, chase excellence and success will follow . – Rancho

A certificate can help you to get a job, but can’t help to find true self

The “3 Idiots” movie teaches us that a certificate is nothing more than a piece of paper. Real education is to acquire knowledge. After graduation, Rancho gives away his certificate to someone else, and with the help of his acquired knowledge, he became a great scientist.

Don’t quit

In the 3 Idiots Movie, Joy committed suicide because he was made to feel worthless. And the principal decided to expel him. He could not handle all the pressure. He could not handle the shame he would cause to his father. Raju also attempts suicide because the principal told him that he would be expelled from college unless he helped to expel Rancho.

A small failure can never ruin your own life. Achieving success in life by fighting is a great enjoyment. Play with challenges, not with your life.

Make your passion your profession

Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer. But, he came to study engineering to fulfill his father’s wish. Rancho has always advised Farhan to make his passion a profession. So you should find your passion and go after excellence! Be it acting, horse riding, or dancing, whatever it is, just go for it.

Avoid cramming and Be excited to learn new things

It is possible to get good results by passing exams with memorization, but it is never possible to get accurate knowledge. In 3 Idiots Movie, Chatur tried to memorize all the books and get good results in the exam. On the other hand, Rancho tried to learn and know something new and won first place in class.  What is the benefit of getting good results through competition if you can’t learn something new? This result has no value. Exactly 10 years later, Chatur has become rich, but he can understand the value of a signature of Rancho.

Believe in yourself & Don’t fear too much

You have to believe in yourself. When Raju is always worried and scared about his future, Rancho tells him to focus on the present and never lose his faith. No work succeeds when you do not have faith in yourself. So that’s why Rancho became a great scientist.

All is well

Everything will be fine when you believe in yourself and learn to enjoy your life. So whenever we are in danger, we should remember “All is Well”.

Essay Preview: My Favorite Movie Is 3 Idiots

My  favourite movie is 3 Idiots. This is a story of the three engineering students in Imperial College of Engineering who finds their friendship as making themselves like idiots but learning from it. The main casts were Farhan Qureshi acted by R. Madhavan, Raju Rastogi acted by Sharman Joshi and Ranchoddas Shamaldas “Rancho” Chanchad acted by Aamir Khan. The main reason why I like love film, inspite of being a comedy carries a message and it’s about humanity. Other than that, I like this movie because it conveys about our schooling system. Nowadays, rote memorization isn't the only thing,it is the understanding of the subject that is needed more than that. It also conveys about expectations of parents and teachers from students. That it is about what one truly enjoys doing than to do what earns more. That grades are not everything. Moreover,In this movie it shows me that we must care and love our family. I really love my family. I always keep my promises for them, to raise them from poverty and to travel with them around the world. What I wanted for my family is to make them happy. Like Raju,we just want to free our family from poor quality that we had. Still I am happy though my family is striving crisis, because I believe that what important is, you are together with your family and you are having fun. This film influences me so much especially the quote “All is well” that always comes out from the mouth of Rancho. I belives that whatever circumstances may lead, if there is any obstacle I may encounter, I will just say this and I will be calm because I believes that there must be a solution in every problem.

Shortly after the 11 minutes were over and President Joseph R. Biden Jr. arose from behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office on the evening of July 24, he and his family filed out to the Rose Garden.

Listen to this article, read by Robert Petkoff

A throng of White House staff members were waiting outside, under a slight drizzle, with a faint rainbow emerging overhead. Most of them spent the preceding hour nervously eating pizza in the East Room of the White House before growing hushed to listen to their 81-year-old boss speak to the nation. Several of them had been crying earlier in the day. But midway into his speech, Biden began to enumerate his administration’s considerable legislative achievements — among them, “And we finally beat Big Pharma,” a line he had fatefully mangled in the debate with Donald J. Trump less than a month earlier, abruptly dropping the hammer on his political future. As he proceeded through these shared highlights, the tenor in the East Room seemed to change, and a few of the staff members proudly shook hands and hugged one another.

Now Biden spoke only to them, through a microphone someone handed him (according to a video of the event that I obtained). “My name is Joe Biden, and I’m Jill Biden’s husband,” he began, grinning broadly at his familiar joke, as his wife stood beside him, noticeably more subdued, working through her own emotions. “Look,” he told his aides, “the only reason that we’ve had the progress that we’ve had is because of you. And that’s not hyperbole.” He added, in a raspy but otherwise even voice: “I’m so damned proud to be a part of you. I really mean that.”

Sounding anything but deflated, Biden exhorted his staff members to think about the work there was left to do over their final six months. He wanted to extend prescription-drug benefits. He wanted to force billionaires to pay their fair share in taxes. “We can start to help lay the groundwork for Kamala,” Biden said of his vice president and now heir apparent, who was already out on the campaign trail.

He wrapped up his three minutes of remarks with a stage-whispered call to arms, as if it were a secret plan: “ Let’s elect Kamala!” After their ovation, the president urged his staff to get to work on the ice cream stationed behind them. Biden cracked a few other jokes but didn’t stay for dessert. Instead, the 46th president of the United States retreated with his wife down the walkway to the residence.
