College of Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary online programs.

In addition to the four-year professional curriculum leading to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, the MU College of Veterinary Medicine offers online (BIOMED) undergraduate and graduate courses.  Courses can serve as:

  • electives for other degree programs in the biomedical sciences, such as biology, biochemistry, and pharmacy, among others.
  • the means to achieve an Undergraduate Certificate in Biomedical Sciences or Certificate in Veterinary Sciences .
  • the basis for receiving a Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Sciences .
  • a component of the requirements for online Bachelors in Health Sciences or General Studies.
  • electives in meeting the requirements to apply to a college of veterinary medicine.
  • the path to earning a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences with an Emphasis in Veterinary Sciences.

Online undergraduate BIOMED courses have been offered since 2009.  Online graduate courses and an online Master’s degree program began in 2014.

NOTICE: The goals of Veterinary Online Programs are to enhance the knowledge of pre-veterinary medical students in preparation for application to a professional DVM program and to enrich the knowledge of veterinary technicians.  However, none of these programs are a professional program in veterinary medicine and do NOT supplant professional (DVM) training in veterinary medicine nor veterinary technology.   Courses may fulfill some of the requirements to apply to a college of veterinary medicine, but a DVM program is NOT online and taking any courses from Veterinary Online Programs, or anywhere else, does not assure an applicant acceptance into a DVM program.

Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology

If you currently hold an associate degree from an AVMA approved technician training program and have passed the VTNE, you can apply for the new online BS completion program in veterinary technology.

For questions about that program, please contact Dr. Cindy Cravens, Director:  [email protected]

COURSES AND INSTRUCTORS

Currently, there are 20 veterinary medical instructors, all faculty at MU, teaching 25 online undergraduate courses and 16 online graduate courses.  The student body is world-wide, including throughout the contiguous U.S. Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, Afghanistan, and China.

All courses are asynchronous which permit student to arrange their study time when it best fits around their personal academic, family, and work schedules.

HOW TO ENROLL AS A STUDENT

Students must first be enrolled as a degree-seeking or non-degree seeking student with the University of Missouri:

Degree-seeking   Non-degree seeking

Applicants for the Graduate Certificate or Master’s degree programs must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association-(AVMA)-accredited program in veterinary technology with a bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology or allied biological sciences or an AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR COURSES

After enrolling as a student with the University of Missouri, you will be given instructions on how to register for courses.  All BIOMED courses require department permission numbers.  Application for permission numbers can be obtained by filling out and submitting a request:   Permission numbers for online BIOMED Courses

NOTE About Changes:    Statements about courses concerning requirements, prerequisites, conditions, and other matters are for informational purposes only, and are subject to change without notice.  They are not to be regarded as offers to contract.

Academic Rigor:  Online BIOMED course rigor is equivalent to that of traditional room-bound classes.  It is estimated that online and study time for a 3-credit-hour on-line course taken over a semester will require 6 to 9 clock hours per week.  Exams are proctored online.   All BIOMED courses are approved by MU Quality Matters criteria for online courses or in the process of MU Quality Matters evaluation.

Course Suitability:  Students should consult with their academic advisor on the suitability of online elective courses relative to their undergraduate degree requirements.  Although online BIOMED courses are accepted toward a portion of the requirements to apply to the MU College of Veterinary Medicine, they may not be acceptable courses in the requirements to gain an undergraduate degree.

Distance Education Veterinary Technology Program (DEVTP)

Accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) since 1978, our Veterinary Technology program has also partnered with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) since 1998 to offer a distance-education component.

Earning a degree or certificate via distance education provides maximum flexibility:

  • All courses are offered every semester (with the exception of general education courses).
  • Scheduling can be tailored to fit your routine; you can enroll in one, two, three or more courses. If you need to take a semester off, you can do so and then jump back in where you left off.
  • Courses are offered three times per year in the fall, spring and summer semesters.

Our distance education Veterinary Technology program features:

  • Specialized general education requirements, with courses such as speech and math that are designed to apply to veterinary medicine.
  • Core content that focuses on an advanced education in pharmacy and pharmacology; surgical preparation and assistance; animal nursing; radiology and ultrasound; and laboratory and examination procedures.
  • Multimedia courses that combine textbooks, videos, online assignments and in-clinic exercises.
  • Flexible scheduling designed specifically for working adults — no commuting or altering your work and family lives to accommodate class schedules
  • Optimal student-teacher contact — professors are available via phone or email for questions and support

Coordinating Your Coursework with a Designated Preceptor

Each hospital or clinic with a DEVTP student-employee is required to provide a designated preceptor who acts as an in-house mentor to assist, tutor and provide feedback to students.

  • Preceptors are responsible for verifying that students have completed exercises, assignments and examinations.
  • Preceptors must be veterinarians, graduates of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program or credentialed technicians designated as RVT, LVT or CVT.
  • Preceptors spend at least one to two hours per week assisting DEVTP students with coursework.

Report: Teaching Online Students to Self-Regulate Learning

New research suggests that short skill-building activities can motivate self-regulated learning among learners taking courses remotely.

Online learners may need help learning self-regulated learning skills. Here are two online interventions that can support them.

supersizer/E+/Getty Images

The availability of online courses has jumped since the COVID-19 pandemic forced remote instruction. In fall 2022, 30 percent of undergraduate students were enrolled in distance education classes exclusively and 60 percent were in at least one distance education course, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics .

A recently published study from the Postsecondary Teaching and Technology Collaborative evaluates the effectiveness of two strategies to improve online community college students’ skills. Researchers found that exposure to reflection exercises and informational videos had a positive relationship with students’ engagement on the learning management system for planning and assessment.

The background: In online education, students’ ability to self-regulate their learning is critical because they’re often expected to work independently and exert control over their own learning journey, compared to face-to-face instruction, according to the report. Prior research has also pointed to a positive relationship between self-regulated learning and students’ outcomes in an online environment.

Self-regulated learning (SRL) skills include time management, metacognition and effort regulation. Interventions that promote these skills include online training modules, prompts, self-assessment and peer support opportunities.

The study, authored by researchers from Columbia University and SRI International, seeks to understand how learners from historically marginalized populations at broad-access postsecondary institutions respond to interventions, as they had yet to be studied.

The study: Researchers analyzed two strategies (videos and prompts) implemented across two semesters (fall 2022 and spring 2023) at a community college in northeastern U.S. categorized as a minority-serving institution. Three instructors participated in the experiment, each teaching multiple sections of one or more fully online STEM classes.

The first intervention, a three-part video series, consisted of short clips designed by educational researchers and instructors to introduce students to SRL in general and one specific skill to attempt. Each video addresses one SRL mindset or practice, some strategies to develop the skill, and an activity for the student to consider their own practices.

The prompts, or short-answer questions, asked learners to plan for the upcoming week, monitor their progress or reflect on their understanding of course concepts.

Instructors received materials and a suggested timeline for administrating the strategies, as well as encouragement to make adaptations according to their course content.

To evaluate the impact of the intervention, researchers examined students’ online behavior on the learning management system. The full sample included 231,462 actions (clickstream data from the LMS) performed by 141 students across 10 sections within four courses.

The results: Student data revealed a positive relationship between the videos/prompts and students’ SRL behavior, meaning viewing and engaging with the interventions pointed to improved learning skills. Students who engaged with both strategies had a strong correlation to engaging with course information. Those who worked with the prompts were more likely to participate in strategic planning and evaluation, and those who engaged with the video were also likely to improve strategic planning, as well as effort regulation.

Among student sub-groups, first-generation students had stronger improvements after being exposed to the prompts, compared to their continuing-generation peers, as did women compared to men (though less prominently).

Supporting Online Learner Success

For practitioners looking for best practices in distance education, some other areas to consider include:

  • Accessibility for students with disabilities in course content and university websites.
  • Peer connections for belonging and retention.
  • Wraparound mental health care services that support online learner demographics.
  • Financial aid tied to student learning behaviors.
  • Universal design principles that center online education first.
  • Motivational support for asynchronous learning.

So what? The preliminary study finds students exposed to learning skills and strategies were more likely to demonstrate skill-building behavior, aligning with existing literature and pointing to future evaluation of how students need assistance with preparing for the future as they navigate course tasks.

Additionally, students from historically marginalized backgrounds were more likely to respond well to the skill-building, suggesting that this could be one way to support equitable learning.

The Driver Pre-Licensing Course

The pre-licensing course.

The course covers many important topics, including:

  • driving within the highway transportation system
  • driver habits and skills
  • feelings, attitudes, and risk-taking
  • alcohol, other drugs, and driving

The Pre-licensing Course will not give you hands-on driving instruction or prepare you for the driver license road test. If you want hands-on driving instruction from a licensed driving school, you may find a licensed driving school using the driving school locator on our website. The Pre-Licensing Course includes approximately 5 hours of instruction. New drivers must complete the course before taking a DMV road test and applying for a license, unless they complete the State’s 48-hour Driver Education Program through their local high school or college. Whichever format you choose, you must have a valid New York State DMV learner permit before you begin the course.

All courses use the same curriculum content. You can find the course curriculum and other information in the Pre-licensing Course Student's Manual (PDF) (MV-277.1) and the Pre-Licensing Course Instructor’s Manual (PDF) (MV-277). This information may be helpful to you before taking the class and as a reference afterward.

Course Formats

The classroom pre-licensing course.

The Classroom Pre-Licensing Course is delivered through many driving schools, high schools, and colleges. You must be at least 16 years old to participate in the classroom course.

The Distance Learning/Virtual Classroom Pre-Licensing Course

The Distance Learning/Virtual Classroom Pre-Licensing Course is also delivered through many driving schools, high schools, and colleges and you must be at least 16 years old to participate. This course is taught live, in real-time, with face-to-face interaction between the instructor and participants, just like in the traditional classroom course, but using distance learning technology. To participate, you must have access to a device capable of connecting to the internet and using a web conferencing platform.  When you contact a driving school, high school, or college that offers Distance learning Pre-Licensing, they will provide more specific information and instructions about what your device requires to take the course.

Not all driving schools can deliver the Pre-Licensing Course. To find a course in your area, search online for “Driving Instruction” or use our driving school locator . Once you find a school that appeals to you, contact the school to confirm whether they deliver the Pre-Licensing Course and in what format – classroom and/or distance learning. From there you can enroll in the course with that school.

The Online Pre-Licensing Course

The Online Pre-Licensing Course is offered by DMV-approved providers through the Pre-Licensing Course Internet Pilot Program. Contact an approved online course provider to enroll in an online course.

You can take the Online Pre-Licensing Course as long as you:

are at least 18 years of age, and

possess a valid New York State Photo Learner Permit, and

have access to a device capable of connecting to the internet.

NOTE:  You will not receive a completion certificate for this course. The course provider will report your completion electronically to the DMV (usually within 48 hours). Once your completion is entered on your permit record, you can schedule your road test online or by telephone at 1-518-402-2100.  The scheduling system will not ask you for a completion certificate.

Pre-Licensing Course Certificate

You will be issued an MV-278 Pre-Licensing Course Completion Certificate when you complete either the Classroom Pre-Licensing Course or by Distance Learning/Virtual Classroom. Applicants who complete the online version of the course will not receive a Pre-Licensing Course Completion Certificate (MV-278). The course provider will report course completions to DMV automatically and applicants will not have to show a completion certificate when appearing for the road test.

Your Pre-licensing Course Certificate is valid for one year from the date it is issued. A Student Certificate of Completion of Driver Education is valid for two years. Your certificate must be valid the day you make your Road Test appointment but can expire on the day you take your road test. If your Pre-licensing Course Certificate expires, you must complete the course again to receive the certificate required to schedule a road test. If you lose your certificate, contact the school that issued it to obtain a replacement. You must bring the original certificate to your road test to turn in to the license examiner.

You do not need a Pre-licensing Course Certificate or a Student Certificate of Completion if you have a valid New York State driver license and you apply to amend to another license class.

About the Program

Associate in Applied Science Distance Learning Program

The Veterinary Nursing Program is a science-based veterinary nursing program offering an Associates in Applied Science (AAS) degree. The Veterinary Nursing Distance Learning Program at Purdue University is designed to allow a student to gain the knowledge, information, and skills necessary to practice as a veterinary technician. It is an AVMA accredited program. Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).

The curriculum contains 27 didactic courses and 18 clinical mentorships. It is a part-time program and cannot be taken full-time. Financial aid eligibility is limited. Students are responsible for finding their own mentorship sites with a veterinary health care facility. Students who make a long-term commitment to develop the skills and acquire the extensive knowledge required to be a veterinary technician are highly sought after employees.

Most courses are offered every term, i.e. fall, spring and summer. Courses follow the Purdue class calendar. Students may be admitted for any term.

More information is on the Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Nursing website .

As part of the veterinary team, credentialed veterinary technicians perform a wide range of veterinary nursing, imaging, anesthesia, dental hygiene and diagnostic laboratory procedures in a veterinary practice. Other career opportunities include specialty practice, clinic/hospital team leaders, research, veterinary technology program educators, pharmaceutical sales, wildlife rehabilitation, zoo and shelter medicine.

Credentialed veterinary technicians are required to maintain continuing education according to state regulations. Information about continuing education programs is available through the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Office of Lifelong Learning.

Critical Course

The ♦ course is considered critical.

In alignment with the Degree Map Guidance for Indiana’s Public Colleges and Universities, published by the Commission for Higher Education (pursuant to HEA 1348-2013), a Critical Course is identified as “one that a student must be able to pass to persist and succeed in a particular major. Students who want to be nurses, for example, should know that they are expected to be proficient in courses like biology in order to be successful. These would be identified by the institutions for each degree program.”

The student is ultimately responsible for knowing and completing all degree requirements. Consultation with an advisor may result in an altered plan customized for an individual student. The myPurduePlan powered by DegreeWorks is the knowledge source for specific requirements and completion.

Comparative information about Purdue University and other U.S. educational institutions is also available through the  College Navigator tool , provided by the National Center for Education Statistics, and through the  U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard .

Top 10 Things To Do And See In Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

veterinary course in distance education

Located about 400km east of Moscow , Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most important centers of cultural, economic, and political activity in European Russia . Widely considered, after St Petersburg and Moscow, to be Russia’s ‘third city’, Nizhny is fast becoming a hot-spot for Russian and global tourists alike, attracted by the city’s up-and-coming reputation and stunning landscape.

The view over Nizhny Novgorod from the city’s Kremlin walls

The Kremlin

Jutting out from the cliffs that overlook the meeting point of the great Volga and Oka rivers, Nizhny Novgorod ‘s ancient Kremlin boasts of some of the best views in the city. Designed by an Italian architect, the 13 magnificent towers and the 12 meter high walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin date back to 1500. On this very spot in 1612, heroes of Russian history Kuzma Minin and Count Dmitry Pozharsky defeated the invading Polish army in extraordinary circumstances. This moment has become legend in Russian history and a statue in honor of these two lies at the foot of St Basil’s in Moscow. The Kremlin is the historic center of the city where you will find an art museum and the lovely Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, as well as a striking monument to those that fought in the Second World War and its flame eternally flickering on in their memory.

Ride on the cable car

Completed in 2012, taking a ride on Nizhny Novgorod’s cablecar has fast become a favorite activity of tourists. The trip offers unparalleled opportunities to view the city’s gorgeous natural landscape from this bird’s eye position. The 3660m long gondola lift connects Nizhny to the town of Bor and stretches across the Volga River for 900 panoramic meters. The gondola acts as both a convenient means of transportation and a fantastic sight-seeing expedition – come at sunset for a golden-bathed view of the river and surrounding landscape.

The house-museum of Maxim Gorky

During the Soviet era, Nizhny Novgorod, birthplace of celebrated Russian writer Maxim Gorky , was renamed ‘Gorky’ in honor of this national hero. This home has been preserved in a state as accurate as possible to how it was left by Gorky and is so successful in this that it would seem as though the writer still lived there. The museum ‘s historic interiors and authentic furnishings will transport you back to the 1900s and the creative world of this icon of Russian literature. Come and make the most of this unique experience to delve into the childhood world of this Russian father of social realism. Museum booklets and guided tours are available in English.

Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka

A yarmarka is something akin to a fair, and this historic former market place was restored in 1991, the site now playing home to a superb modern exhibition center. The city’s yarmarka plays host to international events, fairs, and conventions. In 2011, for the 20 year anniversary of the fair’s refounding, a vast array of exhibitions were organized, attended by thousands including members of the British royal family, Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Gorbachev , and Margaret Thatcher . The fair is not only a buzzing center of business and culture, it is also one of the city’s most impressive sights.

One of Nizhny Novgorod’s stunning parks

The Nizhegorodsky State Art Museum

Located inside Nizhny Novgorod’s ancient Kremlin, the building that houses this art gallery was once the home of the governor of the city. The exhibits are wide-ranging and include everything from 14th century religious icons, to work by 20th century contemporary Russian masters. Particularly dazzling is the collection by Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. There is also a large arts and crafts collection which demonstrates the exquisite handiwork of Russian artisans throughout history.

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street

The chkalov staircase.

An idyllic spot from which to watch the sun’s rays set over the city, this monumental creation was constructed by the Soviet government and is unique to the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The staircase derives its name from pilot Valery Chkalov who, in 1937, became the first man to fly from Moscow to Vancouver through the North Pole. A monument to Chkalov stands at the top of the stairs. The construction of the staircase cost almost 8 million rubles – an immense sum at the time. Over 1,500 stairs connect the city center with the river embankment – making Chkalov’s landmark the longest flight of stairs along the Volga. Nowadays the staircase is a favorite meeting place and relaxation spot for locals.

The Chkalov Staircase in Nizhny Novgorod

The Rukavishnikov Estate Museum

The Rukavishnikovs were a family of immensely wealthy merchants originating from the region around Nizhny Novgorod. This superbly restored palace , their former home, has been transformed into a museum of Russian history and gives a realistic snap-shot of life for the wealthy under tsarist rule. The ornate 19th century interiors and exquisite facade are sure to dazzle with their beauty while the lush green of the surrounding natural landscape provides a tranquil getaway from the city center. Lavish furnishings, priceless antiques, and glistening gold will transport you back in time to a world of balls, carriages, banquets, and tsars. Join the world of Russian noble ladies and gentlemen for a day in this stunning palace.

The Sakharov Museum

Nizhny Novgorod’s Sakharov Museum is dedicated to dissident Russian scientist Andrei Sakharov . The nuclear physicist and human rights activist was exiled for six years to the very flat in which the museum is now housed. Sakharov’s support for civil reform and improved human rights in the Soviet Union earned him harsh persecution from the Russian government, but also, in 1975, a Nobel Peace Prize . Sakharov was incarcerated here until 1986 when a KGB officer arrived to install a phone in the flat. Just after the phone was installed it began to ring: the caller was Mikhail Gorbachev, ringing Sakharov to inform him of his release. This phone is now one of the museum’s most treasured artifacts.

The stunning architecture of Nizhny Novgorod

The National Centre of Contemporary Art

Inside the walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin can also be found one of the best modern art galleries in Russia. Linked to galleries in both St Petersburg and Moscow, this top-ranking exhibition center houses regularly changing displays of both Russian and international art as well as interactive exhibits and a media library. Progress is also on-going of adding a concert hall, extending the exhibition areas, and creating a restaurant. These additions aim to make art contemporary, not simply a detached, unrelatable concept, but bring it closer to the Russian people.

Reasons to Travel to Nizhny Novgorod

Art enthusiasts will surely enjoy the State Gorky Literature Museum which was named after the great Russian author Maxim Gorky. Bet you didn't know that Nizhny Novgorod was his birthplace? Do not worry, now you do.

There are also multiple art galleries and installations such as The Blogger's Bench which provides free Wi-Fi access if you are in the mood of blogging about your experience.

The musician community will not be disappointed as well, as the city has multiple live music bars and cafes open for the public and is often the place where great concerts are staged. If you are not that into art, there are plenty of other places worth putting on your Nizhny Novgorod itinerary, f.e., the grand red-brick Kremlin.

The Cathedral of Archangel Michael, which is actually the only church that has stood the test of time in Kremlin, along with multiple ancient towers is what makes this site a must-see. By the way, the magnificent church of St. Elijah is right around the corner, so make sure to make a little detour during your Nizhny Novgorod tour after seeing the Kremlin.

Another thing you should not miss during your Nizhny Novgorod sightseeing is the panorama of Strelka, overlooking the amazing view of the confluence of the rivers Oka and Volga and also the Fedorovsky Embankment, a perfect place for a stroll in the evening.

If you want to take a look at the scene from a different angle, hop on a boat trip along the two rivers! Nowadays Nizhny Novgorod is the fifth-largest city in the Russian Federation, somehow managing to maintain the unique heritage alongside its cultural versatility, thus looking at pictures is not enough, feel like exploring it yourself?
