Best Typing Apps for Students (and Adults)

Best Typing Apps for Students (and Adults)

While it can be intimidating to look at the jumbled alphabet on a QWERTY keyboard, there are plenty of typing apps available in the market to help students and adults to practice and learn to type.

Typing has become the most essential computer skill and is now required by the Common Core Standards. In 2024, correct touch typing (keyboarding) is the most important technical skill for students to learn. More importantly, students who can’t type properly are severely disadvantaged in computer-based testing because their poor typing slows them down, wasting valuable test time. Many adults take touch-typing classes to prepare for a broader range of job opportunities.

While typing may be faster and more convenient, there are other advantages to students, teachers, and adults. Students with good keyboarding skills can meet and exceed the Common Core Standards. Students with fast and accurate typing will do better in computer-based tests, making doing assignments and dissertations easier. Learning how to type fast is beneficial in general life and work, which will save time and help to be more productive.

Here's our pick of the best typing apps to improve your typing skills on iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

The best typing tutors have accuracy training, ergonomics lessons, and timed exercises to help you improve. Smart goals that adapt to your strengths and weaknesses can help you build muscle memory and iron out flaws in your typing.

1. Typing.com

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Typing.com is a free typing tutor with typing lessons for beginner, intermediate, and expert typists. When you’re in a lesson, there’s nothing to distract you. You can focus on the virtual keyboard that shows you the letters that you need to press and the fingers you should use. Besides the usual typing drills, you’ll find lessons on tech readiness and career preparation. Another lesson plan trains you to touch-type programming code.

Typing.com keeps track of your problem keys and suggests lessons to help you improve. It offers six different typing tests that let you gauge your speed and accuracy. The results of your last 30 tests are stored, so you can see how you’ve improved. More motivation comes from the 249 achievements and badges that you can earn on your typing journey.

You can reinforce what you’ve learned with Typing.com through a wide range of typing practice exercises, including a choose-your-own-adventure typing game where the story changes based on your decisions. Other games such as Keyboard Jump and Tommy Q: Zombie Defender also make the training more fun.

Typing.com may be free, but it rivals the best paid typing tutor software in features and usability. If you find the ads distracting, a one-off payment removes them.

Website screenshot for Typesy

Typesy is one of the most recognized typing tutors available today with software versions for individuals, homeschooling, businesses, and schools. There’s no trial version, but all versions have a 12-month money-back guarantee.

Typesy is cloud-based, so you can access it from any computer, and it will synchronize your results across all devices.

Unusually, the software doesn’t come with any preset goals, so you must set up your own. Once you’ve been typing for a while in Typesy, its Smart Goals point out where you need to improve. Progress tracking is excellent, with a wealth of statistics available at all times in an easy-to-understand visual format.

It uses over 500 scientifically-proven exercises, lessons, drills, and games to improve your typing. Video instructors offer accompanying information before each lesson. You can import your own content from files, eBooks, Wikipedia, or other web content. Lessons can be downloaded from other sources.

Typsey’s games, like Typing Monster, are particularly good for keeping younger students engaged. Overall, Typesy is the most fully-featured and intuitive typing tutor available today.

Website screenshot for NCH KeyBlaze

3. KeyBlaze

KeyBlaze is a budget-friendly typing tutor for Windows or Mac. There is a limited-feature free version, personal version, and commercial version. The commercial version is also available on a subscription plan.

There are over 150 activities to hone your skills, including special lessons for practicing transcribing and 10-key numeric keyboard typing. Games like Word Blizzard challenge you to type words quickly and accurately. Assessments let you know where you stand, and the software keeps track of your speed, accuracy, and weak areas. You can even create your own custom lessons and set your own word-per-minute goals.

KeyBlaze works well as a teaching tool and being able to see your progress in graphs and scores is motivating, but the interface and graphics lag behind more modern options like Typesy. Since most features aren’t available in the free version, it’s more of a demo, but the paid version is inexpensive.

4. TypingClub

TypingClub is a gamified typing tutor with a friendly user interface. You’ll find yourself constantly pushing to earn badges and higher game scores while progressively learning new skills.

The ad-free Premium edition has a three-day free trial and adds more game modes, themes, and reports.

The primary lesson plan has over 670 lessons that build upon each other. You can take a placement test that lets you skip some of the earlier levels if you’re already an intermediate typist. There are lesson plans in nine languages, lesson plans for left-hand and right-hand typing, and specific plans for K1, first-grade, and third-grade students.

A statistics page shows how your speed and accuracy have improved over time in a range of charts, graphs, and calendars. Usefully, color-coded diagrams show how you perform with each keyboard key and finger.

TypingClub is a fun, user-friendly typing tutor that does an excellent job of keeping you motivated and interested while you improve your typing speed and accuracy.

Website screenshot for RataType

5. RataType

RataType is a free online typing tutor with 15 typing lessons, each with multiple exercises. Lessons begin by teaching correct posture, finger position, and finger motion. Interestingly, if you make too many typos, then you’re forced to repeat an exercise.

Besides lessons in the QWERTY keyboard setup, RataType supports Dvorak, AZERTY, Spanish, French, Russian, and Ukrainian layouts. It has a typing test that you can take at any time that shows your speed and accuracy. A printable bronze, silver, or gold certificate is generated, and employers can verify your score at a unique URL.

This typing tutor software is aimed at groups of friends or classrooms, as you can view reports on high scores and compete against each other. It’s an excellent free typing tutor, but it lacks the custom exercises and problem-area highlighting of commercial software.

Best typing tutor software FAQs

How to choose the best typing tutor software for you.

If you’re on the hunt for the best typing tutor software, then it would seem you need to improve your typing skills. Whether it’s for a new job or just to improve some key life skills, the first thing to consider when deciding on the best software for you is exactly what area you need to improve in.

Is it accuracy that you could do with boosting? Do you need to be able to type quicker and have a set speed in mind? Or are you simply wanting an all-around improvement? Knowing exactly how you want to benefit from your software will help you narrow down your choice.

Secondly, having an idea as to how you prefer to learn will also help. Are you easily bored and would prefer a ‘gamified’ learning experience? Or are you happy to slog it out with straight-laced exercises that make you feel as though you’re taking things on board?

Lastly, have an idea of what you’re prepared to spend. The software listed here ranges from entirely free services to those that charge monthly or annual fees, so there should be something here that fits your budget.

How to Type: 5 Tips for Faster Typing

Learn to touch type..

If you don’t know how to touch type, this is where you need to start. Having the ability to type without looking at the keyboard is the most important factor in achieving a fast typing speed. Even if you have memorized many of the keys, unfamiliar keys will slow you down just like speed bumps on the freeway. Taking your eyes off the screen to peek at the keyboard disrupts your focus and costs you time. You want to be able to keep your eyes on the screen and your fingers moving to the correct keys without thinking. Achieving this kind of flow takes practice. The better you can do it, the faster you will be. Read on to learn how.

Aim for accuracy rather than speed.

It does not matter how fast you type if you have to go back and fix all your mistakes. Fixing mistakes takes more time than it does to just slow down and take the time you need to type accurately. Fast typing depends on developing precision muscle memory. Allowing yourself to type incorrectly will actually reinforce your bad habits and common mistakes! Slow your typing pace until you can attain 100% accuracy. If you come across a difficult word, slow down further to type it properly. Develop good habits and speed will be your reward.

Practice typing exercises regularly.

Mastering typing skills takes training and practice. Practice typing on a regular schedule, 10 minutes to an hour per session, depending on your energy and focus level. Practice won’t make perfect if it is half-hearted and full of mistakes, so is important that you practice your typing exercises at a time and place where you can maintain focus and accuracy. Eliminate any potential distractions. If you find yourself making lots of errors, slow down and find a way to regain your focus or call it a day. The goal of practicing is to build muscle memory. Be consistent and mindful in your practice and you will avoid bad habits and mistakes.

Minimize your physical effort.

The less work your fingers do to press the keys the faster you will be able to move them. Most keyboards require only a light touch to register a key stroke, so there is no need to mash the keys down. Type with the minimum force necessary. You will type faster, longer and with greater ease. Typing involves muscles not only in your fingers, but in your hands, arms, back, shoulders, neck and head.

Learn the entire keyboard.

You may have enough experience typing to know most of the common keys - the letters, the space bar, enter, and I’ll bet you know that backspace! But you might be uncomfortable with some of the keys you don’t use as frequently. Do you have to slow down and look at the keyboard to type a number or symbol? If you program or work with spreadsheets you will use the symbol keys frequently. If you are a gamer there are probably CTRL, ALT and function keys that you fumble for in the heat of the battle. In fact, most all programs can be used more productively with effectively use of key combo shortcuts. Hitting these awkward keys and combos accurately allows you to maintain focus on what you are doing, so make sure you include them in your typing practice.

Typist is a typing tutor, which helps you in learning touch typing. If you have never taken any lessons in typing before, please be patient. if it ain't broke don't fix it

I'm almost through the first course and I've actually learned how to type without looking! Abit, very slowly for now, I'm sure I'll improve with practice and muscle memory development. I am pretty sure this is a software port from the 80's, so some of the tech terminology and subject mater in the sample text is dated and makes me feel like I'm 5 practicing my math on an old TI-88 computer we had when I was a kid. Make life easier for yourself and get a keyboard with tall, old school keycaps. modern flat membrane boards are really easy to get lost in when you start out and can result in the user getting frustrated and giving up.

Fast, easy and not too frustrating method to learn typing

I’m embarrassed to admit that I was still hunting and pecking at the keyboard at the age of 26. I was determined to become a touch typist and went searching through the App Store to find something that could quickly help me learn how. Most of the apps are geared toward children and rightfully so, but I wanted something that could be used by an adult, was simple, straight-forward and extensive. Fortunately I found Typist. This app takes you from the very beginning and helps you learn all the keys, including the upper row of number keys. Within three days of using it, I was touch typing (albeit slowly) and within a week, I had become a permanent touch typist. The nice thing about the app is that it caters to typists of all age and experience level and helps you to both improve your accuracy and speed with a number of different, quick and easy lessons. Plus the price can’t be beat. Bottom line: If you’re looking to finally learn touch typing or would like to improve your typing speed, I would highly recommend downloading and using this app.

Wow, I love it!

As a watch-the-keyboard beginning-level typist, I was even willing to pay money for a training program. Many years ago, I enjoyed Mavis Beacon encouraging me; sadly, recent reviews also enjoyed the OLDER versions and didn’t like the newer ones as much. Plus the least expensive was $20, as a download. This one is GREAT! I also benefited greatly from a sugggestion from Whizbang Trainer to put a box over the keyboard so I can’t see my hands. Wow, that did the trick. Those people moaning about how boring typing fff jj ff jjj is aren’t having as much trouble with it as I am, typing truly blindly. It’s using brain-parts I can almost hear doddering around, bumbling into one another, trying to wake up. It’s definitely a case of doing 3 impossible things before breakfast, and kind of fun, once my head stops feeling strange. Maybe the moaners need a keyboard box. Many thanks to both Whizbang Trainer and the programmers of this stellar App!!

Best Typing Apps for Chromebook

By Med Kharbach, PhD | Last Update: August 4, 2024

app for typing assignments

In our increasingly digital world, typing has evolved from a mere skill to an essential lingua franca of technology. It’s the invisible thread that weaves our thoughts into the fabric of the digital realm, connecting us to a universe of information and possibilities. For educators, students, and anyone navigating the landscape of digital literacy, mastering the keyboard is not just advantageous—it’s transformative.

Today, I’m thrilled to share a curated selection of exceptional typing apps designed specifically for Chromebook users. These aren’t just typing tutors; they’re gateways to a more fluid, intuitive interaction with technology. Each app offers a unique approach to developing keyboard proficiency, catering to diverse learning styles and goals.

Whether you’re an educator aiming to equip your students with crucial digital skills, a professional looking to streamline your workflow, or simply someone eager to boost your typing speed and accuracy, these apps offer tailored solutions to meet your needs. They transform the keyboard from a potential barrier into a powerful tool for expression and efficiency.

Typing Apps for Chromebook

Let’s explore these typing apps for Chromebooks and hopefully you will find the perfect fit for your educational toolkit:

1- Typing Scout

This app is quite the gem for both novices and pros in typing. It starts with the basics for beginners and then ups the ante by using real-world texts from daily news – a clever way to keep content fresh and engaging. The inclusion of multiple languages and fun typing games makes it a versatile tool for a diverse set of learners.

2- Typing Club

Here’s a platform that’s not just about individual learning but also extends its utility to classrooms. The school edition seems particularly useful for educators, allowing them to track and manage student progress effectively. The individual edition is no slouch either, offering a wealth of lessons in a variety of languages. It’s a comprehensive tool for anyone serious about mastering touch typing.

Typesy adapts to different ages and skill levels, which is a big plus in my book. Its use of games, exercises, and videos to teach typing makes the learning process less tedious. The smart technology that tailors recommendations and the personalized diploma at the end are nice touches. Plus, the different editions cater to various needs, from education to homeschooling to individual learning.

4- Nitro Type

This one stands out with its unique approach – a car racing game to enhance typing skills. It’s not just about speed but also accuracy, which is crucial in typing. The real-time competition against other players adds an element of excitement and motivation that is often missing in conventional typing programs.

5- TypeRacer

This app takes a similar competitive approach as Nitro Type, but with a twist. The multiplayer and singleplayer modes offer flexibility, and the fact that no registration is required for quick access is a big plus. The use of quotes from books, movies, and songs as typing texts adds an element of culture and fun to the mix.

6- 10 Fast Fingers

This app seems like a straightforward and efficient tool for testing and improving typing speed. The one-minute tests are quick and convenient, and the variety of languages is impressive. The advanced option with the top 1000 words of each language sounds challenging and would be ideal for more advanced typists. Creating an account for tracking progress and comparing scores seems like a good move for those serious about their typing journey.

I appreciate how Keybr customizes typing exercises to the user’s skill level. This gradual progression from basic to advanced levels, focusing on muscle memory, is key in mastering touch typing. It sounds like a practical tool for those who want a tailored learning experience.

Final thoughts

The Chromebook typing apps we’ve explored today offer a rich array of options to suit different preferences and learning objectives. From the competitive thrill of Nitro Type to the structured lessons of Typing Club, each app brings something unique to the table. As educators and learners, it’s exciting to have such a variety of tools at our fingertips, enabling us to make the process of learning to type not just educational but also engaging and fun. I encourage you to try out these apps, whether in a classroom setting or for personal growth.

How to learn to type:, no looking at your keyboard.

This is important - don't do it!

Touch typing is a skill that uses muscle memory to know where the keys are without the sense of sight. You can't learn to swim without getting wet; likewise, you can't learn to touch type by looking down at the keyboard. It might be hard at first but hang in there, and in no time it will become so natural you'll forget the keyboard is even there!

Technique and Accuracy First

Concentrate on correct form (using the right fingering, etc.) and accuracy above all else.

Typing Tutor Features

Multiple lesson formats.

Two different typing lesson formats give you more options to choose how you like to learn:

- Classic Lessons

There is a reason why these repetitive lessons are so common: they work really well for those just starting to learn touch-typing.

For those just starting to learn touch-typing try these - they work!

- Advanced Lessons

These lessons are for those who might already have a basic understanding of the keyboard and need a quicker refresher or maybe learn some of the rarer keys better.

Advanced lessons are designed to move quicker through learning the keys while also introducing words instead of random letters.

Try both types of lessons to find the one you like best. Or, for best results, complete both sets!

Multiple Lesson Lengths

The lesson length dropdown (under the method tabs in the left sidebar) allows you to customize the length of each lesson.

Set target speed and accuracy

Now you have the ability to set typing goals for your typing lessons! Simply set the typing speed and accuracy you would like to achieve and the typing tutor will track your progress, letting you know which lessons you have completed and which ones you should repeat to achieve your goals.

As you improve and increase your target speed and accuracy, the tutor will automatically suggest lessons you should work on next!

Custom Lessons

Sometimes there are just a few keys you can't seem to remember. Simply enter the characters you wish to practice more in the left toolbar and click "Go!" to create a custom lesson for these keys, generated into random "words."

Restart Typing Lesson Hotkey

Keep your hands on the keyboard - use keyboard shortcut "Shift-Return" to restart the typing lesson to help you concentrate and keep your hands in the home position where they belong.

Practice Frequently!

This free online typing tutor was designed to help you learn to type as fast and easy as possible. Try a few lessons a day and you'll start to notice your fingers naturally move to the right keys. Even if it seems at times that you are making no improvement, keep on working at it and you will learn to type without looking! Remember to take breaks often though - its good for the body and for the learning!

Furthermore, it is essential to maintain good posture , such as sitting upright, as it facilitates faster typing. Lastly, it's important to recognize that mastering typing skills takes time and consistent effort. To genuinely enhance your typing accuracy and speed, it's crucial to practice every day . Whether you prefer tapping the screen or the conventional mouse and keyboard setup, the app is optimized to cater to the varied preferred typing methods.

Apart from those features, a bundle of bug fixes and performance enhancements have been implemented to streamline user experience. Now you don’t even have to send all the assignments to your own email address because this app can be downloaded on both Apple and Android and more other devices. It synchronizes all the materials you upload and this way you can access any of your files from any device that has Evernote downloaded. It’s also useful for sharing important information between the users.

Something we’ve been using since childhood is now quickly converted into an app, and it became a lot more convenient and easy. For sure, all the words we looked up made it a lot more exciting in school, and now we simply have to see if we do not forget the right definitions. Yet, it will be just as useful now when you’re writing your assignment and need to use some complicated words for every sentence.

You can check your words and see examples of how to use them on the go. Moreover, it’s accessible on Android, Apple, and Windows, making it perfect for college students.

Dragon Dictation

Are you tired of typing when you need your coursework done very quickly? Do you want to get your work typed by someone else and feel like you’re a top-notch writer? Then Dragon Dictation is just for you. This application can literally listen to you talk and type all the information down while you’re simply having snacks or reading.
