How to Make a Music Video

If there’s one rule to creating a music video, it’s that there are no rules.

You’re truly free to do whatever you think works best.

A music video can be anything from a mere visual complement to the song featuring live performance footage to a full-blown audio-visual artistic piece that adds whole new dimensions to an existing work and can even stand alone as a work of art.

And with the rise of digital platforms, creating a high-quality music video has become more accessible than ever, and therefore, even more important.

That said, there’s still a broad outline of the process of creating a music video from conception to completion:

Concept Development

Step 1: brainstorm ideas.

The first step in making a music video is developing a concept that complements your song.

Think about the story, mood, and visuals that will best represent your music.

Consider the themes and emotions conveyed by your song and how you can translate them into a visual format.

Step 2: Create a Treatment

A treatment is a detailed outline of your video's concept.

It includes the storyline, visual style, and key scenes.

This document will serve as your blueprint throughout the production process.

Planning and Pre-Production

Step 3: scriptwriting.

Once you have a solid concept, write a script that outlines the dialogue (if any), actions, and key moments in your video.

This script will guide your shoot and ensure you capture all necessary footage.

Step 4: Storyboarding

Create a storyboard to visualize your script.

This series of sketches or digital images will help you plan each shot, angle, and transition.

Storyboarding is crucial for both live-action and animated videos.

Step 5: Assemble a Team

Depending on your budget and the complexity of your video, you may need a crew.

This could include a director, cinematographer, lighting technician, makeup artist, and more.

For animated videos , you'll need animators and possibly voice actors.

The best way to go is to hire a video production company  to help you in this process.

Step 6: Location Scouting

Choose locations that align with your video's concept.

Whether you're shooting in a studio, outdoors, or in a specific venue, make sure the setting enhances your video’s visual appeal.

Step 7: Shooting the Video

On the day of the shoot, ensure you have all the necessary equipment, including cameras, lighting, and sound equipment.

Follow your storyboard and script closely, but be open to improvisation if it enhances your video.

Animation (Optional)

Animation can add a unique and engaging element to your music video.

Whether you’re creating an entirely animated video or integrating animated segments into live-action footage, this step requires specialized skills and software.

Step 8: Choosing an Animation Style

Decide on the animation style that best fits your music and concept.

Options include traditional 2D animation , 3D animation , stop-motion, motion graphics , and more.

Each style has its own advantages and disadvantages, aesthetics, and technical requirements.

Step 9: Working with Animators

If you're not an animator yourself, hire a professional or collaborate with an animation studio .

Find a good team of concept artists, graphic designers, scriptwriters as well as animators.

Provide them with your storyboard and any specific instructions.

A good team will work closely with you, understand what you are trying to do, and help you bring your vision to life.

Post-Production

Step 10: editing.

Edit your footage using video editing software .

This involves cutting and arranging scenes, adding transitions, and syncing the video with your music track.

Pay attention to pacing and ensure the visuals enhance the song's rhythm and mood.

Form CTA

Step 11: Special Effects

Add special effects, if needed.

A lot of special effects today are done in post-production thanks to the rise of CGI becoming the de-facto standard.

Step 12: Color Grading

Color grading is a vitally important but little-understood step in the video production process.

This evens out the tones and balances the colors to give your video to achieve the desired look and feel.

This step can significantly impact the final product's visual quality.

Step 13: Sound Design

Ensure the audio quality is top-notch.

Clean up any background noise, enhance the music track, and add sound effects if necessary.

Release and Promotion

Step 14: publishing.

Upload your finished music video distribution platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, and social media.

Ensure your video is properly tagged and described to maximize discoverability.

Step 15: Promoting Your Video

Promote your music video through various channels, including social media, email newsletters, and your website.

Collaborate with influencers, music blogs, and online communities to reach a wider audience.

We wrote an entire separate blog post on promoting your music video, check it out here .

Best Music Video Examples

To give you some inspiration, here are some of our personal favorites!

1. "Cold Heart" by Dua Lipa & Elton John

Call us biased, but we firmly believe that animation has the ability to express emotions, ideas, and concepts that simply cannot be communicated as clearly in any other format or medium, period.

And what better proof is there than this deliciously strange animated music video for “Cold Cold Heart?”

This song is the result of the unlikely team-up of Dua Lipa and Elton John, mashing up two fairly old pop hits from yesteryear into one slick, modern track.

It’s such a bizarre idea, it simply shouldn’t have worked– and yet here we are, half a billion views later.

The music video is suitably as charmingly quirky and hard-to-define as the song itself.

But what’s not hard to miss, is that warm fuzzy feeling it plants squarely in your heart.

2. "Black or White" by Michael Jackson

This was one of the most expensive music videos ever made (and that’s already a long list !).

Black or White was a flagship anthem attacking racism in general, but also Jackson hitting back at the seemingly endless criticism of his physical appearance.

Infectiously catchy as you would only expect the King of Pop to pull off, the music video was more of a mini-movie akin to a true Hollywood-level production, complete with A-list actors and unbelievable special effects.

3. "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits

“Money For Nothing” pushed the very limits of technology at the time. In an era where Microsoft Windows 1.0 was brand new, even the concept of wire-frame 3D computer animation was practically science fiction.

The video was almost not made at all, as Mark Knopfler was unimpressed with the idea of music videos in general.

He was a bit of a purist who hated gimmicky stunts.

He only relented when his girlfriend at the time insisted it was a good idea.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The response and critical acclaim are credited with legitimizing not only the concept of an animated music video but arguably the music video artform entirely.

From this moment onwards, it was without question that one could not seriously release a single without a music video if you expected widespread airplay and success.

4. "Oh Mama" by Run The Jewels

Rick and Morty is a hit sci-fi animated TV show with a cult following.

The folks at Run the Jewels are a critically acclaimed rap/hip-hop duo who have been compared to Rage Against the Machine for their powerful, politically charged lyrics.

So this collaboration is truly a dream team-up.

The music video is visually stunning and colorful and serves as an animated mini-episode of the cartoon duo having yet another ultraviolent inter-dimensional space adventure.

5. "Go Forth and Die" by Dethklok

Dethklok is a virtual animated death metal band, comparable to the more famous Gorillaz.

The band exists in the fictional world depicted in the Adult Swim animated series “Metalocalypse,” a show perhaps best described as “being both a satire of, and loving homage to, heavy metal counterculture.”

While the band is fictional and animated , their music has been critically acclaimed in the real world.

The creators even formed a real-life band to go on tour!

Music Videos We Helped Create

While most of our clients tend to be corporate types, every now and then we get a client who gives us the opportunity to flex our creative muscles with something like an animated music video.

Here’s two that we helped bring to life:

1. Sanctioned to Life

It’s tough being an up-and-coming band, trying to stand out and get noticed.

So New York-based Sanctioned to Life asked us for an unusual music video that wouldn’t break the bank.

It was quite a fun challenge for us to fit a character animation video on a tight budget, but we found creative ways to pull it off.

And we’re pleased to say they were delighted with the results!

2. "It’s All Turtles" by Jim Stanard

Our client was a fan of the old Looney Tunes-style classic animation , rather than the more high-tech 3D stuff that’s popular today.

So with this in mind, we blended character animation and hand-written kinetic typography to enhance the music video with a layer of storytelling.

With animation, you’re constantly thinking outside the box!

Creating a music video is a rewarding process that allows you to express your music visually.

Whether you opt for live-action, animation, or a combination of both, careful planning and execution are key to producing a captivating video.

By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to making a music video that resonates with your audience and showcases your artistic vision!

Bring your video project ideas to life in minutes

A. Video project ideas for elementary students

Video projects for elementary students are mostly a way for the teachers to ensure comprehension and interest in the classroom. These can also be a good tool to make students think about different topics. Let’s check out some video project ideas for this age group:

1. Summarise a lesson

Get your students to summarise history or literature lessons on video. Have students research major figures and events in history and make videos around these concepts. This gives students the chance to learn digital storytelling as well as thoroughly research important historical figures! For example, check out this video sharing the history of television!

Use This Template

2. Share a talent video

Have students share a video performing a talent! They can share singing, dancing, painting, art, baking, playing an instrument or various such videos. This can be a fun activity where students learn more about their peers. For example, check out this music artist launch promotion video that can be used by students to promote their own music videos .

3. Create a book report video

Instead of traditional book reports, get students to create book reports or trailers for various literature projects. These can be a good way to get students curious about concepts you will be teaching them too! Check out this video book report.

4. Celebrate a holiday

Get students to create videos on their traditional or religious holidays. This is a great way to cultivate curiosity, awareness and tolerance for different ethnicities and cultures. Check out this Christmas facts video as an example.

Use This template

5. Create science experiment videos

Encourage students to create their own slides to explain science experiments and their findings. This way, students start thinking of STEM disciplines in a more analytical, hands on manner. Check out the lesson plan presentation below that can be used to document the objectives and findings of such an experiment.

B. Video project ideas for high school students

Video projects for high school students can be a little more advanced as they are in the process of growing their skills and learning more about different subjects.

1. Create a video portfolio

High school is when students start thinking about college applications. This is a great time to start making a portfolio. Teachers can give students the chance to create a portfolio video and share their unique skills and interests. For example, students interested in engineering and STEM can share their coding or science related know-how. Check out this copywriter portfolio as an example.

2. Create a news show

Students need to know current events, both for their school community and for the world around them. Having a school news show is a way to communicate with the school community of students, teachers, staff, and parents. This can be a group effort that helps students learn the value of teamwork and allocation. Check out this newsreel video you can customise to create your own weekly news show.

Use This Template

3. Make a video tour of an important location

If students visit a place -- on a field trip, on vacation or any time -- they can share their learning experience with others by recording video of it and narrating as they go. (If they're at a museum or other such places, asking permission first is probably a good idea!) If they can't visit it, creating a video slideshow with InVideo is also an option. Get your students to share video projects on important locations as an assignment. These projects can be themed around festivals , cultural concepts and activities too. For example, check out their Halloween cross country tour slideshow.

4. Share practice records

Learning a language, cooking , music or sports require constant practise. To gauge the progress of each student, you can ask them to record themselves learning to play an instrument or speaking a new language. Students can make video projects of themselves learning or mastering a particular song, key phrases and more. For example, check out this violinist’s progress video.

5. Create an ad or a promotional video for school events

Get students to make an advertisement or a pitch for a school event. This could include a political ad for class president election, a video resume , or an ad for the latest games or tournaments in the school. Students will need to think about the audience they are trying to reach and the length of the advertisement. For example, check out this match poster video.

6. Promote a good cause

Get students to create a video project promoting a cause they believe in. This helps them build their opinions and develop persuasive skills. Students can share this video with everyone, not just the classroom! For example, here’s a video you can customise to debunk myths around a way of life (going vegan in this case).

C. Video project ideas for higher education students

Post high school, it may seem that video projects aren’t that important. But this is the time when students are most focused on improving skills related to their career. Video projects can thus help students showcase their understanding and interest areas, especially to future employers. So let’s check out some video project ideas for these students.

1. Interview interesting people

The people around us and around the world are living history. Their experiences, information, and advice is a treasure trove waiting to be mined. Get your students to interview individuals from their interest areas or in interesting professions. They could be in-person interviews where both parties sit next to each other or they could be virtual interviews, where someone far away records responses to questions. These interviews can act as learning aids, as well as help students connect with people in their future careers. Check out this video interview on how to approach people for their life stories.

Make your own video highlighting interesting interviews by sharing quotes , testimonials, and more. Check out this testimonial video as an example you can use and customise.

2. Teach a concept via videos

Truly understanding something is the ability to teach it to others. Students can make a video where they are recording themselves completing a task on their computer screen or they can make a demonstration video like a coding class. Teachers and professors could then use these videos to help reinforce skills in your class or even flip some of your lessons. For example, check out this video tutorial on note taking apps.

3. Create a self-assessment video

Being able to assess oneself is an extremely important skill that students need to improve themselves. Self assessment empowers students to become better learners. It also allows them to take an active role in their assessment and push for a grade they feel is unfair - a direct correlation to performance reviews at the workplace! Personalise this testimonial video to create your own self assessment video.

4. Create a video presentation for a written assignment

Written assignments are a staple when it comes to college. But only professors and classmates can view these. Instead, creating a short, promotional video on a written assignment is a great way for students to share their work with more people and learn editing skills at the same time. Check out this digital marketing trends video you can use to create your own video presentations .

5. Create a video resume

For most students, the job hunt begins in college itself. A video resume helps highlight key skills as well as share the student’s personality and attitude with employers. Especially when applying to remote or distant positions, a video resume along with a normal resume provides brownie points. Check out this video resume you can use as a blueprint to create your own.

Leverage the power of video to land your dream job!

Create a PRO video resume in minutes with InVideo

Leverage the power of video to land your dream job!

6. Create a University promotion video

Universities and colleges need as much promotion as they can get. And who better than students to share their experiences and highlights. Get students to create unique videos with their best anecdotes or areas in the university. This is also a good way to get them to research interesting aspects of college life. Check out the University promotional video and make it your own.

D. BONUS: How To Make A Good Video Project

Your school video project can earn you good grades. It is also an opportunity to showcase your creativity. But how to create the perfect video without any error? Video creation may not be your forte, but you still wish to excel in school video projects, right? No worries!

If you have a school video assignment in hand but don’t know where to begin, read below to learn how to create a video project super easy and quick, without any error and fuss. Now, let’s divide your video project into 5 easy steps.

Step 1: Video topic or idea

If you are working on a school assignment, you probably have a video topic given by your teacher or professor. If you are looking for video topic ideas though, find them here .

Step 2: Plan your video assignment

Planning is super important for your videos. This is when you decide how you want to create your video. Consider whether you want to live record your video or create it online using an app or a tool. An online tool like InVideo offers you pre-created templates that might meet your requirements. This is also a super quick and easy way to make your video from scratch. The first thing you need to do is go to InVideo and login or sign up if you wish to use this tool. Next click on the “Pre Made Templates” Option and select the video dimension you want. Finally, type phrases related to your video in the search bar.

InVideo Video Editing Software

You will now see templates related to your search as you scroll below. Simply select the template you want to use and click on the “Use This Template” button to start editing!

Vidoe Editing Templates

If your video idea is to record an event , but you don’t have a DSLR, camcorder or GoPro, use your own smartphone camera for the school project.

Step 3: Prepare a video script

Now that you know how you will record your video, the next step is creating a script for your video. Here’s a step-by-step guide on script writing you can refer to.

3 questions to ask yourself before you create your script:

- What is the objective of your video? - How long does your video need to be? - Who is the audience that will watch your video?

Step 4: Shoot your video + audio

Yankees dfa enyel de los santos two weeks after trading for reliever.

CHICAGO — The Yankees have sent Enyel De Los Santos packing just over two weeks after acquiring him at the trade deadline .

The club designated De Los Santos for assignment Wednesday, which came as somewhat of a surprise if only because of how soon it happened after the trade, though he had a rough introduction to the Yankees.

In five games, De Los Santos got tagged for 10 runs in 6 ¹/₃ innings, including seven runs in 1 ²/₃ innings against the White Sox on Monday night.

New Yankee reliever Enyel De Los Santos, wiping his face during a recent outing against the White Sox on Aug. 12, 2024, was designated for assignment on Wednesday.

“Tough call,” manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees’ 10-2 blowout win over the White Sox in the series finale at Guaranteed Rate Field. “Feel like he’s better than the last couple results he’s had where he’s had a couple tough outings.”

But the Yankees had to send out a pitcher in order to make room for Will Warren’s spot start (and satisfy the maximum of 13 pitchers on the 26-man roster).

Warren, who delivered five innings of two-run ball in the Yankees’ win, appeared to be headed right back to Triple-A after the start and a reliever like Scott Effross join the Yankees on Friday in Detroit.

The Yankees had just two pitchers on their staff with minor league options remaining — Luis Gil, who has been an important part of the rotation, and Jake Cousins, who has been throwing the ball well and recorded his first career save Tuesday night.

The club discussed potentially optioning Gil, with two off days coming up that would have allowed them to reconfigure their rotation and not need a fifth starter until Aug. 24, but Boone said he didn’t think it was “the right thing to do.”

Enyel De Los Santos, delivering a pitch during an Aug. 8, 2024. game against the Angels, got tagged for 10 runs in 6 ¹/₃ innings during his brief time with the Yankees, including seven runs in 1 ²/₃ innings against the White Sox on Monday night.

Acquiring De Los Santos from the Padres (along with a minor league reliever) cost the Yankees Brandon Lockridge, a depth outfielder at Triple-A who is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this offseason if he is not added to a 40-man roster.

Lou Trivino took a step closer to potentially impacting the Yankees this season by beginning a rehab assignment Wednesday with Double-A Somerset, allowing a run on three hits and striking out a batter in an inning of work.

The veteran reliever has been out all year after undergoing UCL reconstruction surgery in May 2023, then had a setback this May when he experienced elbow inflammation.

The veteran reliever has been out all year after undergoing UCL reconstruction surgery in May 2023, then had a setback this May when he experienced elbow inflammation .

He has not pitched in a game since the 2022 ALCS.

The Yankees have a $5 million team option on Trivino for next season, but it’s possible he could become an option for the Yankees bullpen by September.

Clarke Schmidt (lat strain) had another live batting practice session Wednesday in which he threw 32 pitches and simulated two innings.

The plan is for him to throw another Sunday while continuing to build his pitch count before going on a rehab assignment.

Jose Trevino (quad strain) played in his third rehab assignment game Wednesday night with Double-A Somerset, after which the Yankees were expected to reassess his status.

Gerrit Cole will start Friday’s series opener against the Tigers, followed by Carlos Rodon on Saturday and Marcus Stroman on Sunday at the Little League Classic.

Fact-Checking Claims About Tim Walz’s Record

Republicans have leveled inaccurate or misleading attacks on Mr. Walz’s response to protests in the summer of 2020, his positions on immigration and his role in the redesign of Minnesota’s flag.

Flowers, candles, and various items placed on the street. A big black and white mural of George Floyd is seen in the background.

By Linda Qiu

Since Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was announced as the Democratic nominee for vice president, the Trump campaign and its allies have gone on the attack.

Mr. Walz, a former teacher and football coach from Nebraska who served in the National Guard, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 and then as Minnesota’s governor in 2018. His branding of former President Donald J. Trump as “weird” this year caught on among Democrats and helped catapult him into the national spotlight and to the top of Vice President Kamala Harris’s list of potential running mates.

The Republican accusations, which include questions over his military service , seem intended at undercutting a re-energized campaign after President Biden stepped aside and Ms. Harris emerged as his replacement at the top of the ticket. Mr. Trump and his allies have criticized, sometimes inaccurately, Mr. Walz’s handling of protests in his state, his immigration policies, his comments about a ladder factory and the redesign of his state’s flag.

Here’s a fact check of some claims.

What Was Said

“Because if we remember the rioting in the summer of 2020, Tim Walz was the guy who let rioters burn down Minneapolis.” — Senator JD Vance of Ohio, the Republican nominee for vice president, during a rally on Wednesday in Philadelphia

This is exaggerated. Mr. Walz has faced criticism for not quickly activating the National Guard to quell civil unrest in Minneapolis in the summer of 2020 after the murder of George Floyd by a police officer. But claims that he did not respond at all, or that the city burned down, are hyperbolic.

Mr. Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020, and demonstrators took to the streets the next day . The protests intensified, with some vandalizing vehicles and setting fires. More than 700 state troopers and officers with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ mobile response team were deployed on May 26 to help the city’s police officers, according to a 2022 independent assessment by the state’s Department of Public Safety of the response to the unrest.
