PhD in Business Administration & Management

Boston University’s PhD in Business Administration & Management program trains scholars to develop and test management theories that contribute to management education and practice. Students acquire advanced knowledge of literature and theory in their major area of specialization as well as solid grounding in a minor (for example, a social science discipline such as sociology, economics, or political science) that broadens their foundation. Students also gain theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced research skills, essential for publishing in leading academic journals.

The PhD in Business Administration & Management program ensures that students develop an appreciation of the role of their research domain in managerial and organizational contexts and can translate their learning from scholarly research into effective teaching. Our faculty, which has earned worldwide recognition for its scholarly and applied research, is the school’s major resource for doctoral education. Their commitment to advancing management knowledge through research published in top journals, and improving the quality of teaching, enables them to effectively mentor doctoral students, who, in close collaboration with faculty, are part of the intellectual capital of the school.

Learning Outcomes

The PhD curriculum has the following learning goals. Students will:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of literature, theory, and methods in their field.
  • Be prepared to teach at the undergraduate or master’s level in a business school.
  • Produce original research of quality appropriate for publication in scholarly journals.

After matriculation into the PhD program, a candidate for the degree must register for and satisfactorily complete a minimum of 64 graduate-level units at Boston University. More courses may be needed, depending on departmental requirements.

PhD in Business Administration & Management Curriculum

The curriculum provides the graduate with a combination of major and minor foci which incorporates both the depth and breadth of knowledge and research skills required to contribute to management research. It creates the capacity for learning and innovation in the face of rapid changes in the social, economic, technical, and political contexts of management. The curriculum has the following specific learning goals:

Students must:

  • Acquire advanced knowledge of theory and methods in their area of specialization (the major).
  • Gain sound knowledge of theory and methods in an area other than their specialization (the minor).
  • Acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced research skills.
  • Have adequate preparation to teach at the undergraduate or master’s level in a business school.
  • Be capable of independently producing original research of quality appropriate for publication in scholarly journals.

Course Requirements

The minimum course requirement is 16 courses (64 units).

Research Methodology & Methods Core 5 20
Major area 5 20
Minor area 5 20
DS 906 Philosophy and Science of Research 1 4

Course choices must be approved by the department liaison prior to registration each term. The department liaison must also approve whether courses will be accepted as meeting the requirements for classification as major, minor, or research methodology courses. In the fall of the first year, all students are automatically registered for DS 906 Philosophy and Science of Research. All students must take a noncredit teaching intensive prior to the start of their third year.

Research Methodology & Methods Core

Candidates are required to complete five courses in research methods and design. Students, with the advice and approval of department liaisons, will choose these courses. Courses may be taken at the Questrom School of Business or may be selected from appropriate courses offered in other disciplines at the University.

At least two of the five research methodology courses must be taken from the following list of approved Methods Core courses:

  • QST DS 911 Seminar in Macro Organizational Theory
  • QST DS 913 Experimental Design and Methods
  • QST DS 919 Machine Learning Methods for Social Science Research
  • QST DS 925 Methods for Causal Inference in Management Research
  • QST DS 929 Analytical Modeling for Business Research
  • QST MF 930 Advanced Corporate Finance
  • QST MO 923 Field-Studies Seminar

Major Area Courses

Students must acquire advanced knowledge of literature and theory in their area of specialization (the major). Such competence is gained by coursework, participation in seminars, and independent study. Candidates must complete five doctoral courses in the major area and pass a qualifying examination at the end of their coursework.

Minor Area Courses

Students are encouraged to choose a minor that draws on one or more of the social sciences that management theories draw on: for example, sociology, psychology, economics, and political science. Minor area courses may be selected from doctoral-level courses, including independent studies, from any department at the  Questrom School of Business (other than the major area), or from other graduate departments at the University. The five-course minor may also be custom-designed as an interdisciplinary conceptual area with the advice and consent of the department liaison. For example, a student may define the minor as “human behavior” and take five doctoral-level courses in psychology, anthropology, and sociology to meet the requirement.

Philosophy and Science of Research

All students are required to take QST DS 906 Philosophy and Science of Research.

PhD in Management

The intersection of people and enterprise.

How does a dead fish handshake at an interview affect your chances of getting the job? How does experience working together improve a surgical team's performance? What makes top performers burn out, and how can managers head it off? Will extra perks like primo parking spots help you keep your rock star employees? How do astronauts on the International Space Station manage to stay engaged with all the tasks they have to complete in space? Do "bad bosses" ever make amends for their poor behavior?

Management is about answering questions. Specifically, questions about humans and their impact on the organizations they comprise, like the ones above.

The research topics tackled by our own management & entrepreneurship (M&E) faculty are as fascinating as they are varied. We have a reputation for one of the strongest M&E departments in the country, with a concentration of some of the best faculty in the field. As a Management PhD candidate here, you’ll be part of the excitement. You can turn your curiosity about how people and companies can work better into a successful career as a teacher and an influential thinker.

Preserving a faculty ratio of 1:1

We compete with the nation’s highest-ranked business schools for the brightest PhD students. But our selectivity keeps the program small. We admit about 3 students annually from 40–50 applicants.

We support 14–15 PhD candidates, allowing us to maintain a one-to-one student-faculty ratio. That means you can count on attention and engaged mentoring as you progress through the program.

“It was through this experience I realized, wow. This is how I can help—by applying research to complex, difficult, and delicate issues.” Daniel Goering, PhD, Management Read Daniel's story

Our faculty help shape the field

On our faculty roster, you’ll find some big-time M&E researchers. Like Stephen Courtright , an internationally recognized expert in organizational leadership, team effectiveness, employee engagement, and the work/nonwork interface. And Greg Stewart , who’s in the midst of cutting-edge research on medical care provider teams in the V.A. hospital system.

Our heavy-hitter lineup is long and growing. Faculty like Ken Brown , Amy Colbert , Eean Crawford , Rong Su , Michele Williams , Beth Livingston , Semin Park , Daniel Newton , and Bodi Vasi produce industry-leading research and guide our PhD students through their degree.

We’re also some of the most published authors in the leading management and applied psychology journals, like the Academy of Management Journal , Journal of Applied Psychology , Personnel Psychology , and Journal of Management . Our faculty productivity is ranked 9th in the TAMUGA research rankings, and we are constantly engaged in interesting, applicable, and cutting-edge research.

Admission is competitive and selective. We don't "weed out" after admitting—we'll only admit you if we're confident you'll succeed. We consider the entire applicant package to assess candidate competency and fit with our current faculty.

First, you need to meet the minimum PhD admission requirements . Other criteria for admission include:

Academic record

The minimum GPA is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. We also consider the rigor of your undergrad or master's institution(s).

GMAT or GRE score

We accept both tests for the purposes of admission. The average GMAT of our admitted students is approximately 700, but we do not employ a minimum GRE or GMAT cut score. We consider the relative strength of applicants' quantitative and verbal ability scores, in conjunction with other application materials.

Letters of recommendation

We're interested in their assessment of your strengths, weaknesses, motivation, and ability to succeed. Please arrange for three letters of recommendation that can speak to your academic and research abilities.

English proficiency

This requirement applies only to international applicants whose native language is not English. We follow the Graduate College's  English proficiency requirements .

Statement of purpose

Content and overall seriousness are considered. Please tell us why you want to complete a PhD in Management and why you think the Tippie College of Business is the best place for you.

Curriculum and sample plan of study

The PhD in management requires 72 semester hours of credit, in addition to a dissertation. The typical time to complete the degree is five years.

Every year, students submit a progress report for faculty review. Elective coursework can be taken at any point in the program.

Teaching plan

It's important that you get many opportunities to develop and demonstrate your teaching capabilities before diving into the job market. We'll work with you to develop a teaching plan that generally includes a progression over your time here:

  • Leading discussion sections as a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses in M&E
  • Serving as a teaching assistant for MBA-level courses (whenever possible)

What you will study.

Our PhD in Management and Business will train you in critical and analytical skills, research methods, and in discipline-specific knowledge that will give you the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for a career in academia, or as a researcher in a wide variety of settings.

We offer a three-year, full-time (and, in exceptional cases, part-time) programme.

You’ll receive an induction by the University of Surrey’s Doctoral College, as well as a bespoke induction programme from the Business School. This induction will introduce you to the School as well as the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in which the School is based. The induction will outline the relationship between you and your supervisor.

Your supervisor will serve as a mentor as you progress through your PhD.

In your first year, you will receive instruction in subject-specific knowledge and instruction and training in research philosophy and methods. As a full- time student you will complete four taught modules in your first year:

  • Philosophy of Social Science Research
  • Quantitative Methods 1
  • Qualitative Methodology 1
  • Either Quantitative Methods 2 or Qualitative Methodology 2.

At the same time, you will be working on your research (part-time students take the modules over two years). This will form the foundation of your doctoral research.

Once you’ve got the foundation for your doctoral research and passed your confirmation exam, your second year will be spent conducting doctoral research. Students conducting primary research tend to spend the year away doing field research.

Your third year will then be devoted entirely to data analysis, writing up and submitting your dissertation. You’ll have frequent interactions with your supervisor. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend professional development workshops in preparation for the academic job market. There is a four-year maximum period of study on the PhD programme for full-time students.

Your final assessment will be based on the presentation of your research in a written thesis, which will be discussed in a viva examination with at least two examiners. You have the option of preparing your thesis as a monograph (one large volume in chapter form) or in publication format (including chapters written for publication), subject to the approval of your supervisors.

PhD in Management

The PhD program in Management at the University of Missouri seeks to develop professors who are competent academic researchers and teachers. A primary objective of the program is to train PhD candidates to become proficient researchers. Therefore, course work involves research activities such as literature review and critique, theoretical modeling, research design, computer-assisted empirical analysis, and preparation of proposals and research papers. Another objective is to train students to become high-quality teachers. PhD candidates have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses in their specialty area. Students normally specialize in one of these four areas of our faculty expertise: Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior or Strategic Management. In addition, students are expected to participate in national and regional academic conferences and are encouraged to work with faculty in developing individual research and teaching skills.  The program requires 72 credit hours of graduate work beyond the baccalaureate degree. The typical time to complete the degree is four to five years.

Students complete two academic years of doctoral coursework before taking a comprehensive exam. The exam consists of written and oral sections. It is typically scheduled before the beginning of the fall semester in the third year of study. Students begin teaching and pursuing their doctoral dissertation research after successfully completing the exam. Students also engage in other research projects throughout the program. They have the opportunity to pursue joint research projects with world-renowned faculty in the Department of Management.

Students are admitted to the PhD program in Management on a full-time, residential basis only. Students typically work 20 hours per week as a research assistant or teaching assistant during the academic year. They receive a financial package that includes a stipend and/or scholarships, full tuition waiver, health insurance subsidy, and professional development funds. The dollar value of the stipend and/or scholarships is no less than $35,000 annually for students who remain in good academic standing.

Students in this program learn from a comprehensive set of courses focused on organizational science and business acumen, research methods and statistics, seminars and support areas are tailored to the research and teaching goals of the PhD candidate. The program includes a business core of at least 15 hours, at least 15 hours of doctoral seminars in organizational sciences, one 12-hour or two 9-hour support areas, and a minimum of 12 hours in research methods and statistics (18 hours with one 12-hour support area).*

Management PhD candidates can work as research or teaching assistants, which enables them to receive direct support, including a full tuition waiver.

*All programs of study are subject to the approval of a student’s doctoral program committee.

Applications must be received by February 1 for full consideration for admission in the fall semester. Earlier applications are encouraged. Admission to the PhD program in management is highly selective. Applicants should demonstrate a strong record of academic accomplishment, intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm for discovery, and a general understanding of the demands of a doctoral program. Prior academic coursework, research experience, and employment activities in management are encouraged but not required.

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

TEACHING ASSISTANTS: ORAL-ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

All PhD students are evaluated annually to assess their progress in the program. The PhD program coordinator conducts the evaluations for first-year students, and evaluations thereafter are conducted by their academic advisor, in consultation with other faculty.

During the academic year, students are assigned to work as research assistants for faculty members in the department. These assignments allow students to develop proficiency in research methods and often lead to coauthored projects with faculty.

Another important objective of the PhD program is to provide candidates with the opportunity to develop classroom instructional skills. To achieve this objective, doctoral students are assigned to teach undergraduate courses. These assignments require candidates to plan, conduct, and administer one course section per semester. During their time in the PhD program, students typically have the opportunity to teach multiple times. In preparation for the teaching experience, doctoral students are encouraged to attend various teaching-related events sponsored by the Department of Management, the Trulaske College of Business, and the University of Missouri.

  • Research Methods #5

Year 2: Spring Semester

  • Support Area Course #4
  • Research Methods #6

In the summer following the second year of study, students prepare for and take the comprehensive exam in management. The exam includes a written portion and an oral portion in which students present their own original research to the management faculty. During the third and fourth years of study, students will complete  MANGMT 9090 : Research in Management.

*The Department of Management currently offers separate seminars for doctoral students in the areas of Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Strategic Management, Research Methods, and a broad topic (e.g., Theory Development) that may vary. Each of these seminars is offered every other year. Students take doctoral seminars for their support areas in other departments on campus, except for the departmental research methods seminar, which counts toward the credit hour requirements of the research methods support area.

PhD in Leadership vs DBA: Choosing the Right Path for Advanced Leadership Roles

  • August 13, 2024

PhD in Leadership vs DBA

Table of Contents

Professional landscapes change fast, and so do the qualifications they demand. Thus, advanced, impactful degrees are a big draw for those aspiring to leadership roles and beyond. Among the most prestigious and impactful degrees for such positions are the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and the Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership (PhD).

This article will analyze the differences between the two and help guide you towards the best choice for your future.

Bottom Line: Go DBA for Industry, Go PhD in Leadership for Academics

  • Both degrees equip you with credibility , expertise , and skills like problem-solving and analytical thinking .
  • They’re also excellent networking opportunities.
  • DBAs have a practical focus on applied research and professional development.
  • PhDs are much more about theory, research, and academia. They add to the body of knowledge that already exists.
  • DBA programs are more flexible , while PhDs tend to be full-time commitments

First off, while both degrees aim to enhance leadership capabilities , each caters to different career paths and personal aspirations. You need to understand where you are and clearly envision where you want to be. Only then can you figure out the path to get there.

Advanced Degrees and Leadership Roles Depend on Each Other

Whether with a DBA or a PhD in Leadership, you’ll equally advance toward the knowledge and skills required for leadership roles . They’re both good paths forward if you consider moving upward in your career.

It’s not just about having that nice “Dr.” before your name, but it sure is a big part of it. Doctoral programs grant you credibility and expertise in your field of choice.

You’ll improve at thinking critically and strategically about complex problems – undoubtedly a significant requirement for managers and directors everywhere.

Both types of programs involve research . That means you’ll spend considerable time with data, analyzing it, and drawing conclusions from it.

And then there’s the networking. If you want to move upward toward a leadership role, you’ll be happy to rub shoulders with a network of professionals, academics, and industry experts .

Let’s discuss the DBA in Global Leadership

The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Global Leadership is designed for those who wish to apply research to practical business challenges, issues, and problems. Its main qualities include:

  • Practical Focus : The DBA is heavily oriented towards practical, real-world business issues. It aims to develop leaders who can implement effective organizational strategies and solutions.
  • Applied Research : DBA candidates often work on research projects that directly apply to their workplace or industry, bridging the gap between theory and practice.
  • Flexibility : Many DBA programs, such as those offered by California Intercontinental University (CIU), are designed to be flexible and accommodate business professionals and working executives. These programs often offer online courses and part-time options, allowing students to balance their studies and professional responsibilities.
  • Professional Development : DBA programs emphasize professional growth, leadership skills, problem-solving skills, analytical skills, and executive decision-making, preparing graduates for high-level leadership roles in various industries.

PhD in Leadership: Key Characteristics

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Leadership is more academically inclined, focusing on theoretical foundations and research. Key characteristics include:

  • Theoretical Focus : PhD programs in Leadership delve deeply into theories of leadership, organizational behavior, and management. They aim to advance the field through original research and scholarly contributions by adding more to the body of knowledge.
  • Academic Research : PhD candidates conduct rigorous research, often contributing new knowledge. Their work is typically published in academic journals and presented at conferences.
  • Full-Time Commitment : PhD programs are usually full-time and require a significant time commitment. They often involve teaching responsibilities, research assistantships, and comprehensive exams, and are often more expensive.
  • Career in Academia : A PhD in Leadership is ideal for those who wish to pursue a career in academia, teaching at universities, and conducting high-level research.

Choosing the Right Path for You

Deciding between a DBA and a PhD boils down to three main factors:

  • Industry vs Academia
  • Professional Focus vs Academic Focus
  • Flexibility vs Commitment

If you work in an industry and want to keep it that way, go with the DBA. Learn everything there is to learn and go apply it to practical problems in your area. However, if your goal is to continue doing research for a living while teaching at a university, a PhD might be a better choice.

The next question is whether you want a program emphasizing practical application or theoretical knowledge . DBA for the former, PhD for the latter.

So good so far. What about flexibility and commitment ? DBAs are better suited if you want to keep your job while working toward earning your degree. PhDs tend to be full-time commitments that demand the better part of your life for a few years. Oh, and DBAs tend to be better for online programs .

Meet Stevens Bonhomme

Before finishing the article, let’s highlight the story of Stevens Bonhomme and how a DBA propelled him to new heights.

Stevens graduated from CIU in 2019, with a shiny new Doctor of Business Administration in Global Business and Leadership . He kept an impressive CGPA of 3.78 and made the President’s List for high academic achievement.

One of Stevens’ top goals was to receive a doctorate by the age of 30. He achieved this at 28 while working full-time at Microsoft. Remarkably, he completed the program in just one year by doubling up on classes each term. His dissertation, titled “Adaptation of Business Strategies in Haiti and the United States – The Case of Five Culturally Diversified Small Business Owners,” spanned 150 pages and highlighted his dedication and ambition.

Stevens has held various leadership roles at Microsoft, served as an Adjunct Professor of Business at Northwest University, and is the Founder & CEO of Feedcoyote, a robust social productivity network. His journey illustrates how a DBA can open doors to diverse leadership opportunities and drive impactful change.

Both DBA and PhD in Leadership programs provide distinct benefits for aspiring leaders. Your ideal choice depends on whether your career goals are in industry or academia. Pursuing an advanced degree not only deepens your expertise and enhances your credibility but also equips you with the essential skills to navigate leadership challenges in a complex environment. For professionals managing other commitments, flexible online DBA programs , such as those at CIU, offer a practical route to achieving your leadership ambitions.

PhD Corner – Director’s Message – August 2024

Dear friends:

University faculty need to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and skill set to thrive in their careers. While the WSU PhD program does not directly provide entrepreneurial training to its students, their four- to five-year journey forces them to develop and hone their entrepreneurial skills that will be useful in future faculty careers. These skills include enhanced problem-solving abilities, leadership and team collaboration, adaptability and resilience, opportunity recognition and innovation, and networking and resource management.

College graduates entering PhD programs encounter a number of challenges. They must learn to navigate graduate school coursework and research problems with unclear solutions. Tackling these challenges improves their problem-solving skills significantly.

Graduate students typically collaborate on research assignments, frequently leading such endeavors. In their roles as teaching assistants and instructors, they are often solely responsible for delivering course content in an engaging way. As they go, students pick up excellent leadership and team collaboration experiences.

Learning from failure is an important part of students’ PhD journey and will be a part of their professional careers. From difficulties in coursework, to teaching efforts that don’t “click,” to research project restarts, students must remain resilient and adapt for the next try.

The core of research involves identifying “gaps” in the literature, i.e., opportunities to explore unexplained phenomena. Successful researchers find those and follow up with innovative solutions.

Beginning with their first-year cohort and extending to senior students, faculty, and beyond, PhD students build their professional networks from day one. A huge component of that is attending professional conferences and meeting students and faculty from all around the world. These networks become vital as faculty careers blossom.

Some university faculty provide consulting services, and others even start their own successful companies (e.g., Ed Schweitzer III right here in Pullman). But even faculty who focus only on their professor positions essentially have an entrepreneurial job. The most successful professors create truly unique courses and learning experiences for their students. They produce cutting-edge research that pushes the boundaries of knowledge. And they work behind the scenes to improve the educational experience and create extra-curricular opportunities for their students. Faculty have the freedom to shape their work output to follow their priorities and passions. The PhD journey helps them prepare well by developing a plethora of entrepreneurial skills.

“When we say ‘the Bay Area is your campus’, it means your network is not confined to this building. You can approach people in the Bay Area to network, and you can access the resources in the Bay Area."

Navtej Singh, (MSSM '23)

In addition to the core and elective coursework, MSSM students have access to Carnegie Mellon's many resources for entrepreneurs including the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship clubs, on and off campus networking events, and tech treks to organizations and startups in the Bay Area.

I was looking for a program where I could get practical experience, industry exposure, and where I could leverage the network of the community. The CMU Silicon Valley campus offered me an opportunity where I could get the best of all of these. -Utkarsh, MSSM, '23

There are several extracurricular activities to pursue in Silicon Valley. The campus offers the following organizations to participate in which include: The Product Management Club, The Changemakers Club, The Entrepreneurship Club, and The WiiiN club. These clubs help students navigate through the Product Management field and build a thriving community with their peers. There are several other opportunities for students to get connected with others in and out of the classroom which include: attending networking events , going on  tech treks , and interacting with noteworthy guest speakers . Explore Entrepreneurship Clubs & R esources

The newly introduced categories in 2024 include 50 state public universities, with an additional 50 in the rank band of 51-100. However, only three institutions are ranked in the open universities and skill universities categories. For innovation institutions, 10 institutions are ranked, along with an additional 40 in rank bands of 11-50.

The NIRF Team employs triangulation methods to identify and correct data issues, consulting with institutions to maintain data integrity. This focus on accuracy has minimized data inflation, enabling the NIRF Team to refine ranking parameters and metrics. Third-party sources like Scopus, Web of Science, and Derwent Innovation provide additional data on publications, citations, and patents, which are shared with institutions for transparency.

The ranking framework evaluates institutions based on five key parameters: Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR). Publicly funded institutions, including CFTIs and centrally funded universities, continue to dominate the top ranks across most categories, but state and privately funded institutions also feature prominently in the top 100 across various domains.

Organizational Behavior

  • Technology & Operations Management
  • Program Requirements

Scholars in the doctoral program in Organizational Behavior at Harvard Business School are prepared to pursue an interdisciplinary inquiry into issues that are broadly related to the functioning of individuals within groups, at either the micro or macro level. Graduates of our program go on to become the leading researchers and thinkers in organizational behavior, shaping the field and advancing theoretical understanding in posts at schools of management or in disciplinary departments.

The Organizational Behavior program is jointly administered by the faculty of Harvard Business School and the Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and students have the opportunity to work with faculty from both the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School.

Curriculum & Coursework

Our program offers two distinct tracks, with research focused either on the micro or macro level. Students who choose to focus on micro organizational behavior take a psychological approach to the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and groups, and the effects that groups have on individuals. In macro organizational behavior, scholars use sociological methods to examine the organizations, groups, and markets themselves, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives.

Your core disciplinary training will take place in either the psychology or sociology departments, depending on the track that you choose. You will also conduct advanced coursework in organizational behavior at HBS, and complete two MBA elective curriculum courses. Students are required to teach for one full academic term in order to gain valuable teaching experience, and to work as an apprentice to a faculty member to develop research skills. Upon completion of coursework, students prepare and present a dossier that includes a qualifying paper, at least two other research papers, and a statement outlining a plan for their dissertation. Before beginning work on the dissertation, students must pass the Organizational Behavior Exam, which presents an opportunity to synthesize academic coursework and prepare for an in-depth research project.
