UK riots latest: Starmer warns rioters will be sentenced 'within a week' - as police prepare for 'big day' of at least 30 protests

Sir Keir Starmer has held a second COBRA meeting this evening as anti-immigration and far-right disorder rocks UK towns and cities. Police sources say they are aware of 30 gatherings planned tomorrow on what is expected to be a "big day" of disorder, with lawyers' offices threatened.

That's all our coverage on this story for now - we'll be back tomorrow with all the latest updates.

Before we go, here's a reminder of the key events from the last 24 hours:

  • Police sources have told Sky News there are around 30 protests planned for tomorrow, with lawyers' offices potentially being targeted;
  • Sir Keir Starmer held a second COBRA meeting this evening, saying he is expecting "substantive sentencing" of rioters before the end of the week;
  • South Yorkshire confirmed a total of 51 police officers were injured during the riots outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham;
  • Health Secretary Wes Streeting said people who are racist to NHS staff "can and should" be turned away from care;
  • A man became the first suspect to be convicted of stirring up racial hatred during the riots after posting messages on Facebook about attacking a hotel housing asylum seekers;
  • All the children under the care of Alder Hey Hospital after the Southport attack have now been discharged.

Two more people have been charged after disorder in Southport and Liverpool city centre.

Philip Prescot, 38, of Sefton Street, Southport, has been charged with violent disorder in connection with trouble in Southport last Tuesday, Merseyside Police said.

David Frank Hill, 38, of Bianca Street, Bootle, has been charged with violent disorder in Liverpool city centre on Saturday.

Both were remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning.

The UAE has advised its citizens to "exercise the highest level of caution" while in the UK.

In a post on X, the country's embassy in London said citizens should take necessary precautions and avoid visiting areas where riots have been taking place.

"UAE citizens must adhere to the warnings issued by the UAE Embassy in London and comply with all safety instructions," it said.

A 48-hour dispersal order has been enforced and extra police patrols have been ordered in South Liverpool in a bid to tackle expected disorder.

The order, which allows police officers and PCSOs to direct people who have engaged or are likely to engage in anti-social behavior to leave a specified area, will last until 7pm on Thursday.

Failure to comply with a dispersal order is a criminal offence and can result in imprisonment or a fine.

Merseyside Police Inspector Leigh Price said: "We have introduced this order to prevent potential disorder following similar incidents in Merseyside and other parts of the country this week.

"Patrols have been increased in the area to deal with any issues, and this dispersal zone gives officers on the ground extra powers to approach people they believe could be there to commit anti-social behaviour or disorder."

It comes as police sources tell Sky News there are 30 protests planned across the country tomorrow.

Allegations of two-tier policing have gained currency as far-right riots continue to rock towns and cities across the UK.

The phrase is used to describe the impression that some protests and demonstrations are dealt with more harshly than others.

Elon Musk, the world's richest man and the owner of the social media platform X, is among those who have propagated the idea in recent days.

But the concept has been rubbished by senior politicians and police officers.

So, what does the term two-tier' policing mean?

The term "two-tier policing" has been used to suggest that police have been more heavy-handed with people on the right of the political spectrum than the left.

Even before the outbreak of the current rioting in the UK, the idea was propagated by the likes of English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson, actor-turned political activist Laurence Fox and former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, in relation to pro-Palestinian protests.

More recently, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage summed up the sentiment when he claimed on Monday that "ever since the soft policing of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests, the impression of two-tier policing has become widespread".

The Clacton MP has since doubled down on this, claiming on social media that "most of us think that ethnic minority groups are policed entirely differently to that of white British people".

What do the critics say?

However, critics of Mr Farage and others who have used the term say there is a clear difference between legal and peaceful protests and the violent disorder of the past week, which has seen mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers attacked, police officers hospitalised and shops smashed and looted.

One of the strongest rebukes came from Dame Priti Patel, who was home secretary during the BLM demonstrations in 2020.

She told Times Radio: "There's a clear difference between effectively blocking streets or roads being closed to burning down libraries, hotels, food banks and attacking places of worship. What we have seen is thuggery, violence, racism.

"What we saw during the pandemic, we saw protest. We believe in free speech. We saw protests that were being policed.

"What we're seeing right now is thuggery and disorder and criminality. There is a complete distinction between the two."

West Midlands Police Superintendent Emlyn Richards said two-tier policing "doesn't exist", adding: "We are here to police without fear or favour."

The concept has also been rejected by the prime minister, who said it was a "non-issue" and insisted policing was carried out "without fear or favour".

You can read more about this from our political reporter Faye Brown  below...

An assault on a young boy in Belfast is being investigated as a hate crime.

The boy, whose age has not been released, suffered a minor facial injury after being attacked by up to 10 youths.

Officers said a large group of young people also threw eggs at a shop.

Gerry Carroll, who represents the political party People Before Profit, visited the area and said the community was "disgusted" by the incident.

He said west Belfast locals defended a business that came under attack by a group of young people.

"It is deeply concerning to see young people swept up in such behaviour, especially when we have seen such sickening and widespread attacks on minorities in recent days," he said.

"I would appeal to all young people and everyone else to desist from these types of attacks, and to stand for diversity, inclusion and a welcome west Belfast.

"We must state in no uncertain terms that migrants and all minorities are welcome here and that we will not tolerate such attacks on our neighbours."

Police have appealed to witnesses to get in touch through the online form on their website or contact Crimestoppers anonymously.

More riots are expected to take place this week, with police sources telling Sky News around 30 are due to break out tomorrow.

But while disorder continues to erupt, some communities have come together to clean up the mess that has been left behind.

In Liverpool, more than £100,000 has been raised for a library that was torched.

In Southport, where the riots began, locals have cleared the streets and rebuilt walls.

Police in Durham have issued dispersal orders to 37 people who arrived in the city centre this evening.

People aged between 13 and 38 were given the orders, which will remain in place until 12pm tomorrow.

A 15-year-old boy was also arrested for a public order offence, Durham Police said.

It came after intelligence suggested public disorder was expected to break out.

Reminder: A dispersal order can be used in a wide range of situations in order to offer immediate relief to a community.

These powers enable officers and PCSOs to direct a person to leave a specified area and not to return for 48 hours.

"We feel very proud, very excited to have you," said Rishi Sunak as he introduced Elon Musk in London last November.

Now his successor, Keir Starmer, must wish Musk would just go away.

While the government knows the very unhelpful views of a private individual would best be ignored, when that individual has 193 million followers on a social media platform they own, that isn't going to work.

Musk's promotion of far right cause

Musk is well known for controversial posts on X, the platform he owns, but this is something different.

He appears to be on a mission, criticising the causes and policing of the ongoing riots, and getting personal, too.

He's used the hashtag #2tierkeir in reference to right-wing criticism of alleged two-tier policing, and interacted with far-right activists like Tommy Robinson - handing the former EDL leader a level of profile he could only have dreamed of at a pivotal moment.

And it's not just the UK in his sights…

But Musk isn't just trolling the UK government - having come out in support for Donald Trump's re-election bid, he's also ramped up his opinions about US politics and criticism of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Are we simply seeing a rightward slide in Musk's politics?

There's more to it than that. Legislation like the UK's Online Harms Act, the EU's equivalent, and efforts to pass the same in the US, could threaten his social media business.

The balance of power is shifting

That meeting between Sunak and Musk confirmed something that should trouble all democracies: the balance of global power has shifted.

Musk – or his business interests in AI and building gigafactories for electric car batteries – was seen as a solution to some of the UK's woes.

He has wealth rivalling that of smaller nation states, giving him privilege and power akin to world leaders.

But he's not bound by the same rules - and he knows it.

No longer seen as a solution to our needs, he's now a massive problem.

Taylor Swift 'in shock' after fatal stabbings of 3 kids at dance class celebrating her music

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Gelsenkirchen, Germany

LONDON — Taylor Swift said Tuesday that she was “completely in shock” after three children were killed at a dance workshop celebrating her music in a small British seaside town.

Eight other children were injured, five of them critically, in what police called a “ferocious” knife attack Monday in Southport, a seaside town in northwest England near Liverpool. On Tuesday, authorities announced the third child had died.

Merseyside Police named three of the victims as Bebe King, 6; Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7; and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9. Two adults were critically injured as they tried to defend the children, the force said.

“The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously, and I’m just completely in shock,” Swift said in an Instagram Live post.

“These were just little kids at a dance class,” she added. “I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

Shortly afterward, Bebe's and Alice's families paid tribute to the little girls in a statement released by police.

“No words can describe the devastation that has hit our family as try to deal with the loss of our little girl Bebe,” Bebe's family said. Alice's family said: “Keep smiling and dancing like you love to do our Princess, like we said before to you, you’re always our princess and no one would change that.

People left flowers and stuffed animals in tribute at a police cordon near where the incident took place in the town, which is famed for its beach and pier.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the seaside town Tuesday and thanked emergency service workers. Laying down a wreath, he stood momentarily in silence.

Later there was also a protest outside a mosque in Southport and police were attacked by a crowd of men, many of whom were wearing masks and hoodies. Some chanted far-right slogans, and stones and bottles were thrown at officers who put on helmets and riot gear.

Police said a 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the attack. Investigators said he was from the nearby village of Banks but did not offer a motive. However, they said that the attack was not being treated as terrorism-related and that no one else was believed to be connected.

Under the United Kingdom's law, the identities of children ages 10 to 17 charged with crimes are not disclosed outside court.

Shortly after the incident, Colin Parry, who owns the business next to the community center that was hosting the children’s event, told the British broadcaster Sky News that one of his colleagues called him and told him to get outside, where he witnessed utter horror.

“It was definitely intentional. It wasn’t once. It was several times he stabbed these kids," he said. (Sky News is owned by Comcast, the parent company of NBC News.)

King Charles III was among those to also express horror at the attack, saying Monday that he and Queen Camilla were "profoundly shocked to hear of the utterly horrific incident in Southport" and offering their "most heartfelt condolences" to the families.

A Just Giving online fundraiser called "Swifties for Southport" had raised more than £100,000, or around $128,500, as of Tuesday for the grieving families.

The U.K.'s worst attack on children occurred in 1996, when a 43-year-old man fatally shot 16 kindergartners and their teacher in a school gymnasium in Dunblane, Scotland. The U.K. subsequently banned the private ownership of almost all handguns.

Mass shootings and killings with firearms are rare in Britain, where knives were used in about 40% of homicides in the year that ended March 2023.

Depends on how many of you are travelling.

I don't think so, should be clearly stated when you book your tickets.

The difference between 1st class and 2nd Class is that 2nd Class are bunk style, where the upper bed folds down, first class are just the lower bench seats that become beds.

We had Meals when we went 1st class but nothing to write home about, so paying for a meal wouldn't be the worst thing, and not that expensive anyway, as were the beers.
