Before you can begin drafting you need to understand exactly what you're trying to convey. You're not merely recounting some events from your life; you're telling a story so that your reader will be able to extrapolate some greater significance. What's the point of your story? Are you telling a story of overcoming adversity to communicate the idea that perseverance is the key to success? Are you saying that love conquers all? Is there no place like home? Identify your purpose, and then you can work on how to illustrate it.

Tell a Story

The best way to hook a reader is to tell a story or anecdote that demonstrates your purpose. Don't preface it with philosophy, just dive right in at the heart of the tale. This way you will captivate your audience so they will understand your purpose without you having to state it. Trust Your Reader

Once students have a good grasp of what an autobiography is, we need to ensure they are familiar with the main features of the genre before they begin writing.

Let’s take a look at some of the main technical elements of an autobiography:

Tense: Mostly written in the past tense, but usually ends in the present tense and sometimes shifts into the future tense at the very end.

Structure of an Autobiography:

●     Usually written in chronological order

●     Uses time connectives such as before, then, after that, finally, etc

●     Uses the names of real people and events

●     Is specific about times, dates, places, etc

As we know, there is more to a genre of writing than just ticking off the main features from a checklist.

To write well takes time and practice, as well as familiarity with the features of the genre. Each genre of writing makes different demands on our skills as a writer and autobiography are no different.

Below, we will look at a step-by-step process for how students can best approach the task of writing their autobiography, along with some helpful hints and tips to polish things up.

Let’s get started!

 HOW TO START AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY WRITING TIPS:

Tip #1: brainstorm your autobiography.

The structure of an autobiography is somewhat obvious; it starts at the beginning of the subject’s life, works its way through the middle, and ends in the present day.

However, there’s a lot in a life. Some of it will be fascinating from a reader’s point of view and some of it not so much. Students will need to select which events, anecdotes, and incidents to include and which to leave out.

Before they begin this selection process in earnest, they need to dump out the possibilities onto the page through the process of brainstorming. Students should write down any ideas and sketches of memories that might be suitable onto the page.

While they needn’t write trivial memories that they know definitely won’t make the cut, they should not set the bar so high that they induce writer’s block.

They can remove the least interesting episodes when making the final selection later in the writing process. The main thing at this stage is the generation and accumulation of ideas.

TIP #2: CREATE AN OUTLINE OF YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY

After students have selected the most compelling episodes from their brainstorming session, they’ll need to organize them into the form of an outline.

One good way to do this is to lay them out chronologically on a simple timeline. Looking at the episodes in such a visual way can help the students to construct a narrative that leads from the student’s earliest childhood right through to the present day.

Students need to note that an autobiography isn’t just the relating of a series of life events in chronological order. They’ll need to identify themes that link the events in their autobiography together.

Themes are the threads that we weave between the cause and effect of events to bring shape and meaning to a life. They touch on the motivation behind the actions the author takes and fuel the development growth of the person.

Some themes that might be identified in an outline for an autobiography might include:

●     Overcoming adversity

●     Adjusting to a new life

●     Dealing with loss

●     The importance of friendship

●     The futility of revenge

●     The redemptive power of forgiveness.

These themes are the big ideas of a person’s life story. They represent how the events shape the person who is now sitting writing their story. For students to gain these insights will require the necessary time and space for some reflection.

For this reason, autobiography writing works well as a project undertaken over a longer period such as several weeks.

TIP #3: DO THE BACKGROUND RESEARCH ON YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Even though no one knows more about the topic of an autobiography than the author, research is still a necessary part of the writing process for autobiographies.

Using the outline they have created, students will need to flesh out some of the details of key events by speaking to others, especially when writing about their earliest experiences.

The most obvious resources will be parents and other family members who were privy to the joys of babyhood and their earliest childhood.

However, friends and ex-teachers make excellent sources of information too. They will enable the student to get a different perspective on something they remember, helping to create a more rounded view of past events.

For older and more advanced students, they may even wish to do some research regarding historical and cultural happenings in the wider society during the period they’re writing about. This will help to give depth and poignancy to their writing as they move up and down the ladder of abstraction from the personal to the universal and back again.

When students make the effort to draw parallels between their personal experiences and the world around them, they help to bridge the gap between author and reader creating a more intimate connection that enhances the experience for the reader.

TIP #4: FIND YOUR VOICE

Students need to be clear that autobiography is not mere personal history written dispassionately and subjectively.

For their autobiography to work, they’ll need to inject something of themselves into their writing. Readers of autobiography especially are interested in getting to know the inner workings of the writer.

There is a danger, however. Given that autobiographers are so close to their material, they must be careful not to allow their writing to denigrate into a sentimental vomit. To counter this danger, the student author needs to find a little perspective on their experiences, and following the previous tip regarding research will help greatly here.

A more daunting obstacle for the student can lie in the difficulties they face when trying to find their voice in their writing. This isn’t easy. It takes time and it takes lots of writing practice.

However, there are some simple, helpful strategies students can use to help them discover their authentic voice in their writing quickly.

1. Write to a close friend or family member

All writing is written to be read – with the possible exception of journals and diaries. The problem is that if the student is too conscious of the reader, they can find themselves playing to the audience and getting away from what it is they’re trying to express. Showboating can replace the honesty that is such a necessary part of good writing.

A useful trick to help students overcome this hurdle is to tell them to imagine they are writing their autobiography to an intimate friend or family member. Someone who makes them feel comfortable in their skin when they are around. Students should write like they’re writing to that person to who they can confide their deepest secrets. This will give their writing an honest and intimate tone that is very engaging for the reader.

2. Read the writing out loud

It’s no accident that we talk about the writer’s ‘voice’. We recognize the actual voice of people we know from its many qualities, from its timbre, tone, pacing, accent, word choice, etc. Writing is much the same in this regard.

One great way to help students detect whether their writing captures their authentic voice is to have them read it out loud, or listen to a recording of their work read out loud.

While we don’t necessarily write exactly as we speak – we have more time to craft what we say – we will still be able to recognize whether or not the writing sounds like us, or whether it’s filled with affectation.

As the student listens to their own words, encourage them to ask the following questions:

●     Does this sound like me?

●     Do the words sound natural in my voice?

●     Do I believe in the events related and how they were related?

Finding their real voice in their writing will help students imbue their writing with honesty and personality that readers love.

TIP #5: DRAFT, REDRAFT AND REFINE YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY

In the first draft, the brushstrokes will be large and broad, sweeping through the key events. The main notes of the tune will be there but with sometimes too much ornamentation and, at other times, not enough. This is why redrafting is an essential part of the writing process.

Students should understand that every piece of writing needs redrafting, editing , and proofreading to be at its best. There are no masterpieces full-borne into the world in a single draft.

For many, the tightening-up of a piece will involve the merciless cutting out of dead words. But, for some, the redrafting and refining process will demand the adding of more description and detail.

For most, however, it’ll be a little from column A and a little from column B.

Often, it’s difficult for students to get the necessary perspective on their work to be able to spot structural, grammar , punctuation, and spelling errors. In these instances, it can be best to enrol the eyes of a friend or family member in the role of editor or critic.

One effective way of doing this in class is to organize the students into pairs of editing buddies who edit each other’s work in a reciprocal arrangement.

These ‘edit swaps’ can be continued through to the proofreading stage and the final, polished piece.

Anyone who’s lived a long, interesting life (as many of us have in one way or another!) may dream of someday turning their life into a book. However, the practicalities of how to write an autobiography can be daunting — especially to those who don’t have much writing experience.

If you feel ready to write your autobiography but aren’t sure where to start, this guide will take you from opening lines to (hopefully) publishing your autobiography for all the world to read.

1. Understand what an autobiography entails

When asked to picture an autobiography, you might think of a celebrity tell-all or political memoir. This isn’t inaccurate ; a memoir would definitely fall under the autobiography umbrella. But to be really precise, there are a few key differences between memoirs and autobiographies:

  • Memoirs tend to be more thematic and focus on a  central narrative (similar to a novel), whereas an autobiography is highly factual and reads more like “classic” nonfiction.
  • Memoirs focus on a specific period or theme in a person’s life, while autobiographies aim to give a complete, chronological picture.
  • Lastly, many memoirs are written while the writer is still young. An autobiography, though, should be written later in one’s life — at a point where one’s life story can be told comprehensively.

An autobiography is also different from a biography in that it is always narrated by the subject. Note that we’ve said “narrated” instead of “written” because, indeed, many autobiographies are created with the help of ghostwriters!

Should you write a memoir or an autobiography?

In other words, if you’re still young (be honest here!), and/or if the book you want to write is more a series of vignettes revolving around a central theme, you may have a memoir on your hands. If that’s the case, check out our guide to how to write a memoir for more tailored advice.

But if you’ve already lived a long, interesting life — one that you feel prepared to share chronologically and completely — then an autobiography is the medium for you.

2. Outline your life's main “beats”

You might think you don’t need to be too picky about what to include in your autobiography since it’s supposed to be a “complete” account — and you’d be mostly right! That said, even in a fairly exhaustive autobiography, it’s still useful to identify the key “beats” before you begin.

What should you include in an autobiography?

While each person’s autobiography will be unique to them, readers expect certain “beats” to be covered. To get the ball rolling, here’s a list of classic autobiographical beats to hit:

  • 🐣 Your birth and family background – possibly including how your parents met, where they were living at the time of your birth, whether you have any siblings, etc.
  • 📚  Your early days at school – including the friends you made (whether long-lasting or not), your academic achievements (and failures), and any critical moments related to your future goals/actions.
  • 🧑🏽‍💻  Your first job – this is often enlightening for readers, particularly if it had some bearing on your later career; whether because you realized that you loved the work or, more likely, that you didn’t want to work your first job forever.
  • 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩  Your first relationship – similar to your first job, this is often a major stepping stone into adulthood and understanding your priorities.
  • Moving house;
  • Having children;
  • Getting promoted;
  • Receiving an award;
  • Traveling somewhere new;
  • Or discovering anything significant about yourself.
  • 💼  Your retirement – if applicable, this will likely be one of the last beats you cover; it might include why you decided to retire, how you are spending your time nowadays, and any plans for the future.

Remember that each beat you include should contribute to a holistic portrait of your life — whether it’s something that shaped your character or lends context to another parallel moment later on.

But not everything will be relevant. There’s no need to include random things that have no bearing on any other event or important element of your life; that said, the lucky thing about memory is that you likely won’t recall most of those things anyway!

3. Try to write in chronological order

Having come up with a solid outline, you should now feel (somewhat) prepared to start writing your autobiography… and, ideally, to start writing it in chronological order.

While many books can be drafted non-chronologically, an autobiography is not one of them. This is because each new chapter quite literally builds on the last; this is different even from a memoir, which often skips around in time and leaves out details. The best way to ensure you’re not missing anything is to write your autobiography as chronologically as possible!

How to start an autobiography

On the note of starting your autobiography, it’s pretty straightforward: begin either with your birth or slightly before, e.g., with your parents. Unlike a memoir, which can start in medias res ( in the middle of the action ), an autobiography should start ab ovo , or “from the egg.”

This is one of the biggest benefits of writing chronologically: you always know where to start, and indeed, what should come next. Here are two strong autobiography openings to give a sense of how yours might sound:

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb

When I was born, people in our village commiserated with my mother and nobody congratulated my father. I arrived at dawn as the last star blinked out… I was a girl in a land where rifles are fired in celebration of a son, while daughters are hidden away behind a curtain, their role in life simply to prepare food and give birth to children.

Iacocca: An Autobiography by Lee Iacocca and William Novak:

Nicola Iacocca, my father, arrived in this country in 1902 at the age of twelve — poor, alone, and scared. He used to say the only thing he was sure of when he got here was that the world was round. And that was only because another Italian boy named Christopher Columbus had preceded him by 410 years, almost to the day.

Though each opening takes a different tack — Yousafzai’s autobiography begins with her actual birth, while Iacocca’s begins even earlier, with his father’s arrival in America — both serve as effective starts to their respective books and set the tone for what’s to come.

4. Include plenty of detail

In case we haven’t drilled down on this enough, let’s reiterate once more: an autobiography should be a complete overview of your life from beginning to end. That means that as you get into properly writing it, you should include as much detail as you can remember.

Taking one of our previous suggested beats — “your first job” — as an example, here are a few questions you might ask yourself to recount your memories in more detail:

  • How did you get your first job?
  • What made you want to work there?
  • What was the environment/atmosphere like — physically and emotionally?
  • What was your greatest accomplishment at this job? Your greatest failure?
  • What did you learn from working there? How did it affect your later career?

As you can probably tell from these questions, the natural corollary to the advice of “be detailed!” is to also be honest . Don’t shy away from your failures or regrets — an autobiography without mistakes is not an autobiography, but rather a puff piece.

Examples of strong biographical detail

For those wondering how to inject detail into their writing, here are two examples from great autobiographies that do exactly that. Each takes a different approach to engage readers — perhaps you can pick up some descriptive techniques to suit your own life story.

Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela

There was no natural light in my cell; a single bulb burned overhead twenty-four hours a day. I did not have a wristwatch and I often thought it was the middle of the night when it was only late afternoon. I had nothing to read, nothing to write on or with, no one to talk to [...] After a time in solitary, I relished the company even of the insects in my cell, and found myself on the verge of initiating conversations with a cockroach.

This passage’s evocative details — the single lightbulb, Mandela’s loss of his internal clock — convey the crushing loneliness of solitary confinement, yet also add levity with the bit about cockroaches.

This give-and-take style may be useful if you, too, are writing an autobiography which includes difficult or traumatic elements. Don’t shy away from the hard parts, but don’t let solemnity overpower your personality and voice!

When you’re little, a piano can look like it has a thousand keys. You’re staring at an expanse of black and white that stretches farther than two small arms can reach. [...] The keys on Robbie’s piano had a subtle unevenness of color and shape, places where bits of ivory had broken off over time, leaving them looking like a set of bad teeth.

This passage uses sensory details and an intimate tone to draw readers in, describing not just how the piano looks, but how it feels to play. All this makes for a very compelling narrative style — almost like that of a novel. If you want your autobiography to flow this way, try reading more nonfiction in this style (indeed, many memoirs read quite similarly).

5. Do research to fill in the gaps

No matter how carefully you rack your brains, you won’t be able to recall every detail of your life. That’s where research comes in! Here are a couple of things you can do to learn more about yourself and your past.

Interview friends and family

While you’ve likely retained the core of each important life memory, some details will still elude you. For these, you might call on friends, family members, and anyone else who was in your life at the time — interviewing them should help flesh things out in your autobiography.

You might try a few different interview strategies, depending on what you’re hoping to achieve:

  • Ask specific questions based on what you can’t remember/don’t know (e.g. “Whose wedding was that again?” or “Why did Dad quit that job in Pasadena?”);
  • Ask your subject to recount everything they can about an event (e.g. “Tell me how you remember our high school graduation”); or
  • Ask them if they have any key memories of you which they would like to talk about.

The first interview style will be the quickest, but the latter two might yield more interesting results. If you’re prioritizing thoroughness, we’d highly recommend calling up a few old friends or close family members, sitting down, and recording your interview for a few hours.

Do “traditional" research if needed

Having written as much as you can, and interviewed other people to add their stories, you might still find yourself missing information. If applicable, this is where you could turn to “traditional” research — that is, looking up relevant records and documentation, or even taking a field trip or two to previous neighborhoods.

It’s up to you how far to go with this; just don’t go mad, and try to avoid any rabbit holes that tempt you to write an entirely new book. (Then again, that could always be your next project! Check out our post on how to write a nonfiction book to learn more.)

6. Give your draft a discerning edit

You’ve finally finished a detailed draft — congratulations! Even if you don’t do anything else with your autobiography, your friends and family will be wildly impressed, and your descendants will have a fascinatingly thorough record of your life.

But if you want to publish your autobiography — or even if you suspect it hasn’t turned out quite as expected — you’ll now need to enter the editing stage. There are a few different types of editing to consider for your autobiography, including:

  • Structural editing to heighten the impact of your key beats;
  • Line editing to improve the syntax, flow, and clarity of your sentences; and
  • Fact-checking and proofreading to ensure your book doesn’t contain any errors.

7. Format and publish your autobiography

Now comes the really fun part, if you so choose it — formatting and publishing your autobiography for everyone to read!

Biography fans out there will know that auto/biographies often contain a selection of personal photos within the text. If you’re envisioning this, it will require specialty formatting; you’ll either need to intersperse photos throughout the text or format your book with a “photo section” in the middle (the more common option).

Your life story, or autobiography , should contain the basic framework that any essay should have, with four basic elements. Begin with an introduction that includes a thesis statement , followed by a body containing at least several paragraphs , if not several chapters. To complete the autobiography, you'll need a strong conclusion , all the while crafting an interesting narrative with a theme.

The word autobiography  literally means SELF (auto), LIFE (bio), WRITING (graph). Or, in other words, an autobiography is the story of someone's life written or otherwise told by that person.

When writing your autobiography, find out what makes your family or your experience unique and build a narrative around that. Doing some research and taking detailed notes can help you discover the essence of what your narrative should be and craft a story that others will want to read.

Research Your Background

Just like the biography of a famous person, your autobiography should include things like the time and place of your birth, an overview of your personality, your likes and dislikes, and the special events that shaped your life. Your first step is to gather background detail. Some things to consider:

  • What is interesting about the region where you were born?
  • How does your family history relate to the history of that region?
  • Did your family come to that region for a reason?

It might be tempting to start your story with "I was born in Dayton, Ohio...," but that is not really where your story begins. It's better to start with an experience. You may wish to start with something like why you were born where you were and how your family's experience led to your birth. If your narrative centers more around a pivotal moment in your life, give the reader a glimpse into that moment. You may not have had the most interesting childhood in the world, but everyone has had a few memorable experiences. Highlight the best parts when you can. If you live in a big city, for instance, you should realize that many people who grew up in the country have never ridden a subway, walked to school, ridden in a taxi, or walked to a store a few blocks away.

On the other hand, if you grew up in the country you should consider that many people who grew up in the suburbs or inner city have never eaten food straight from a garden, camped in their backyards, fed chickens on a working farm, watched their parents canning food, or been to a county fair or a small-town festival.

Something about your childhood will always seem unique to others. You just have to step outside your life for a moment and address the readers as if they knew nothing about your region and culture. Pick moments that will best illustrate the goal of your narrative, and symbolism within your life.

Consider Your Culture

Your culture is your overall way of life , including the customs that come from your family's values and beliefs. Culture includes the holidays you observe, the customs you practice, the foods you eat, the clothes you wear, the games you play, the special phrases you use, the language you speak, and the rituals you practice.

As you write your autobiography, think about the ways that your family celebrated or observed certain days, events, and months, and tell your audience about special moments. Consider these questions:

  • What was the most special gift you ever received? What was the event or occasion surrounding that gift?
  • Is there a certain food that you identify with a certain day of the year?
  • Is there an outfit that you wear only during a special event?

Think honestly about your experiences, too. Don't just focus on the best parts of your memories; think about the details within those times. While Christmas morning may be a magical memory, you might also consider the scene around you. Include details like your mother making breakfast, your father spilling his coffee, someone upset over relatives coming into town, and other small details like that. Understanding the full experience of positives and negatives helps you paint a better picture for the reader and lead to a stronger and more interesting narrative. Learn to tie together all the interesting elements of your life story and craft them into an engaging essay.

Establish the Theme

Once you have taken a look at your own life from an outsider’s point of view, you will be able to select the most interesting elements from your notes to establish a theme. What was the most interesting thing you came up with in your research? Was it the history of your family and your region? Here is an example of how you can turn that into a theme:

"Today, the plains and low hills of southeastern Ohio make the perfect setting for large cracker box-shaped farmhouses surrounded by miles of corn rows. Many of the farming families in this region descended from the Irish settlers who came rolling in on covered wagons in the 1830s to find work building canals and railways. My ancestors were among those settlers."

A little bit of research can make your own personal story come to life as a part of history, and historical details can help a reader better understand your unique situation. In the body of your narrative, you can explain how your family’s favorite meals, holiday celebrations, and work habits relate to Ohio history.

One Day as a Theme

You also can take an ordinary day in your life and turn it into a theme. Think about the routines you followed as a child and as an adult. Even a mundane activity like household chores can be a source of inspiration.

For example, if you grew up on a farm, you know the difference between the smell of hay and wheat, and certainly that of pig manure and cow manure—because you had to shovel one or all of these at some point. City people probably don’t even know there is a difference. Describing the subtle differences of each and comparing the scents to other scents can help the reader imagine the situation more clearly.

If you grew up in the city, you how the personality of the city changes from day to night because you probably had to walk to most places. You know the electricity-charged atmosphere of the daylight hours when the streets bustle with people and the mystery of the night when the shops are closed and the streets are quiet.

Think about the smells and sounds you experienced as you went through an ordinary day and explain how that day relates to your life experience in your county or your city:

"Most people don’t think of spiders when they bite into a tomato, but I do. Growing up in southern Ohio, I spent many summer afternoons picking baskets of tomatoes that would be canned or frozen and preserved for cold winter’s dinners. I loved the results of my labors, but I’ll never forget the sight of the enormous, black and white, scary-looking spiders that lived in the plants and created zigzag designs on their webs. In fact, those spiders, with their artistic web creations, inspired my interest in bugs and shaped my career in science."

One Event as a Theme

Perhaps one event or one day of your life made such a big impact that it could be used as a theme. The end or beginning of the life of another can affect our thoughts and actions for a long time:

"I was 12 years old when my mother passed away. By the time I was 15, I had become an expert in dodging bill collectors, recycling hand-me-down jeans, and stretching a single meal’s worth of ground beef into two family dinners. Although I was a child when I lost my mother, I was never able to mourn or to let myself become too absorbed in thoughts of personal loss. The fortitude I developed at a young age was the driving force that would see me through many other challenges."

Writing the Essay

Whether you determine that your life story is best summed up by a single event, a single characteristic, or a single day, you can use that one element as a theme . You will define this theme in your  introductory paragraph .

Create an outline with several events or activities that relate back to your central theme and turn those into subtopics (body paragraphs) of your story. Finally, tie up all your experiences in a summary that restates and explains the overriding theme of your life.

Before beginning the autobiography project, it helps to define the reason for writing your life story.

Is the book to be a chronicling of your life to be passed down to future generations for posterity? Or, is the undertaking driven by a desire to use your life lessons to teach, motivate, help, or inspire others?

Regardless of the purpose for retelling your unique story, having a fundamental understanding of autobiography guidelines will keep you on track from start to finish.

What is an Autobiography?

The word ‘autobiography’ derives from three Greek roots: the prefix, auto (self), the root word, bio (life), and the suffix, graphy (writing)—self-life-writing.

In essence, an autobiography is a first-person narrative detailing the highlights of one’s life.

Because it is a true accounting of your life, it is important to stick to the facts and resist any impulse to embellish or fabricate.

Autobiography writing follows the same basic principles of all storytelling. Writing an autobiography requires well-crafted prose, structure, and organization of timelines and themes, a defined purpose, and a keen awareness of the audience. Understanding how to write an autobiography involves the following steps:    

1. Define your purpose.

What motivated you to embark on autobiography writing in the first place? What message do you want to deliver to the reader? Define the purpose for writing your story and keep that purpose in mind throughout the project.

2. Identify your audience.

  • Complication or crisis. Major twists in your adult life, and pivotal moments that eventually lead to a major life achievement or victory.
  • Resolution. This is where the theme of the book comes to fruition, where the author reveals the lessons learned after rising above adversity.

Generally, autobiographies are structured chronologically, unwinding the narrative from birth to the present. Even when using the chronological structure, these storytelling principles should be integrated accordingly.

Some authors begin the autobiography in the middle of their life story, introducing the crisis right off, and then reverting to their childhood days. This has the effect of grabbing the reader’s attention and making them curious about how the author got to that point, thus committing early on to continue reading.

A third option is to treat one of the sections as a stand-alone autobiographical piece.
  • Preview the section(s) you plan to teach and read Teaching Racially Sensitive Literature: A Teacher’s Guide .  Having Our Say does contain frank conversations about race, including representations of blatant racism through language and action. Determine the type and level of preparation your students might need.
  • Make copies of all necessary handouts.
  • Think about an event from your life you would be comfortable using in the modeling the drafting process. (See Instruction and Activities Session 3.)
  • Plan for computer lab/internet access for any sessions during which you will use ReadWriteThink interactives or students will be word processing.
  • If you are unfamiliar with the story of the  Delany sisters, the Having Our Say Website includes brief information about the sisters and how their story came to be written, as well as a study guide for the book.
  • Test the Venn Diagram and Timeline interactives on your computers to familiarize yourself with the tools and ensure that you have the Flash plug-in installed. You can download the plug-in from the technical support page.

Student Objectives

Students will

  • identify features that are unique to and common between informational and autobiographical nonfiction.
  • choose an event from their life to narrate in essay form, adopting genre-appropriate voice, style, and methods of development.
  • determine the specific historical, cultural, or familial background information that readers of the above essay would need.
  • craft an informational nonfiction essay around that information, adopting genre-appropriate voice, style, and methods of development.
  • successfully integrate informational and autobiographical nonfiction.

Session One

  • Prepare students for the reading by discussing its unique structural features.  Have them leaf through the book and take note of its structure while you guide them through the different sections (major sections indicated by roman numerals and titles, unlabeled introductory chapters, alternating chapters labeled with the narrating sister’s name, etc. ).
  • Point out that the third author, a writer for The New York Times , is the objective voice in the chapters at the beginning of the sections.
  • Offer students the label of “multigenre text” and ask if they have read or are familiar with any multigenre texts (Avi’s Nothing But the Truth , Walter Dean Myers’ Monster ).  Ask them what genres seem to be represented in this work.  See the ReadWriteThink lesson Reading and Analyzing Multigenre Texts for more information on this specialized reading and writing, including a booklist with more examples.
  • Have students produce a list of ways that informational nonfiction (perhaps students can conceive of it as “newspaper” writing) and autobiographical nonfiction are similar and different.  You may wish to use the Venn Diagram tool to facilitate this discussion.
  • Extend this discussion into a conversation about what makes each of these genres especially effective.  Write students’ observations on an overhead or large sheet of Post-It paper for later use/reference.  You can then use these preparatory materials as a rubric for the final student product or use the Multigenre Autobiograpy Project Rubric included in this lesson.

Session Two

  • Have students read the desired section(s) of the book. 
  • direct presentation of ideas: “A generation after the end of slavery, freedom for black Americans was still elusive” (90)
  • a focus on facts and events:  “1896…the Supreme Court ruling in the Plessy v. Ferguson case” (90)
  • development with third-person examples and explanation:  “The case stemmed from an incident in which a Louisiana citizen named Homer Plessy lost his appeal to the Supreme Court, which sanctioned the establishment of ‘separate but equal’ facilities for blacks and whites” (90 – 91)
  • formal, standard English throughout and objective perspective throughout.

The style here stands in marked contrast to the conversational style of the sisters’ chapters, where the narrative is driven by dialogue, descriptions, stories, and opinions.

  • Use an overhead of the Multigenre Autobiography Planning Sheet to have students summarize the Delanys’ story in the center circle.  Then review the section opener to list context the third author provides and put the contextual information in the outer circle.  Point out that, diverse as the styles of the two sections may be, they work together to show how the sisters’ lives were part of a larger, more dynamic picture than their individual life experiences alone.
  • Preview the multigenre autobiography assignment, noting to students that they will write about an event from their life as well as the larger context surrounding it.  Encourage students to make connections between their autobiography and the information they include in the contextual essay like the ones from Having Our Say .

Session Three

  • Have students brainstorm a significant event or experience from their lives that they would like to share.  Some students will choose to start with a significant world, community, or family event first ( e.g. , the September 11 attack, the closing of a plant or factory in their town, the birth of a sibling) and then determine the personal narrative they will write in relation to that event.  Others will have an experience they want to narrate and will determine the focus of the contextual information later.  Either approach can work, but ensure that students choose a personal experience that will need to be contextualized.
  • Refer to the list of qualities of narrative/autobiographical nonfiction the class produced in Session 1 (or use the Understanding the Two Genres handout ). 
  • Remind students that they will need to work toward these objectives as they produce a rough draft of their personal essay.
  • Distribute the Multigenre Autobiography Planning Sheet .
  • Model for students the functionality of the Multigenre Autobiography Planning Sheet . Using an event from your own life, start jotting down the events, feelings, and reactions you would need to include in an autobiographical essay recounting the event.
  • As the connections become apparent, or after you’ve modeled the inner circle, write down in the outer circle elements of context you would need to include.
  • Answer any student questions about the process and give them time to start planning the autobiographical component in the inner circle.

Session Four

  • At the beginning of this session, ask students to recall specific instances from the book to exemplify the qualities of autobiographical narrative writing (focus on events and reactions; indirect presentation of main ideas; opinions and reactions are central to the piece; etc .) from the Understanding the Two Genres handout or the list of qualities the class developed to help them focus their efforts.
  • Give students time to work on composition of a draft of the personal essay.  Use the Timeline tool to help students plan the structure of their essay. 
  • Ask students to complete a draft of the essay by the next session.  They should be ready for a peer review activity.

Session Five

  • Put students in pairs to read each others’ drafts and provide feedback to their partners’ essays.  Use the Autobiographical Component Peer Review Guide or a similar resource reflecting the qualities on which you wish students to focus.
  • After giving students time to share their comments with each other, tell students that their attention will now be shifting to concerns of audience as they prepare for the second essay in the project. They need to consider the questions  “Who will be reading this piece?” and “What kind(s) of information do those readers need to gain a full understanding of the experience?”
  • Refer back to sections such as “Harlem Town” or “Jim Crow” to give students a model for this way of thinking.  Remind them that the essay at the beginning of each section provides historical, familial, or cultural context for the individual stories that the sisters narrate in the chapters that follow. 
  • Ask for a few volunteers to tell what event they are narrating.  As a class, discuss the kind of context they will need ( e.g. , If a student is writing about moving from a large city to his/her new home in a smaller town, he/she could describe their city/neighborhood as a reporter would; If a student is narrating the divorce of his/her parents, he/she could provide a brief objective chronology of his/her family life up to that point).
  • Direct peer response pairs to focus on the type and amount of contextualizing their essays will require.  Does the reader need background on the author’s family?  On a historical event?  About a cultural term or concept?  These mini-conferences will produce a plan for the second piece in this assignment.
  • Have students record their needs on the outer circle of the Multigenre Autobiography Planning Sheet .
  • For homework, have them further think about/refine their plan for the contextual essay using the Contextual Essay Planning Sheet . There they should make firm decisions about the amount and type of background information they will need to give their readers. 
  • Ask students to begin the process of researching any information to which they do not have immediate access (family history, historical events).  This research need not be formal, but students should gather information they will need.

Session Six

  • Check students’ plans for the contexual essay and review the guidelines for effective informational writing (see the Understanding the Two Genres handout). 
  • Answer any questions students have about the contextual essay and allow time for the composition of the context opener. 
  • Ask students to have the context opener drafted for the next session.  They should be ready for a second peer review activity.

Session Seven

  • Students meet in the same response pairs and use the Contextual Component Peer Review Guide or a similar resource to provide each other feedback on their partners’ work. 
  • Have pairs go back to the autobiographical essays as well as their plans from Session 5 to make sure the contextual essay sufficiently prepares the reader for the autobiographical essay.
  • If time allows, give students time to begin preparations for revision.

Session Eight

  • Allow students time to revise and polish their project based on feedback and self-evaluation.
  • As a class, choose a unifying school, community, national, or world event.  Write a collaborative contextual essay and have students contribute individual autobiographical essays.
  • Families can choose a unifying event and write a contextual essay together.  Individual family members can contribute individual autobiographical essays.
  • Expand the multigenre requirement to include photographs, poetry, a play, or another genre of your choice.

Student Assessment / Reflections

  • Use the Multigenre Autobiography Project Rubric to evaluate the revised student work.
  • Students should also be asked to reflect on what they learned by putting their story into a larger context.  Although they may not have the dynamic connections that are present in the Delany sisters’ story, encourage them to see how putting their stories in a new perspective can help them understand themselves more critically.  This reflection could come as a preface or introduction to the completed multigenre piece.

How to structure an autobiography to make it readable

Writing your autobiography might feel like it should be the most intuitive thing you’ll ever do. You lived through those experiences, and you know those stories so well. And yet, far too many would-be autobiography writers fall at the first hurdle. Even though they know broadly what they want to say, they never quite work out what to write about in an autobiography.

So, in this article, I want to give you the resources and insight you need to write an autobiography or biography. You’ll see how getting the structure of an autobiography right is key to telling your story effectively and interestingly.

How do you know what to write about in an autobiography? The accumulated stories of your life could probably fill a dozen books. So how do you cram it all into a single volume?

If you want to write a book that focusses in greater detail on a few elements of your life, you should write a memoir . From collections of stories about family or work to stories of struggle and survival, the memoir is the perfect vehicle for books with a smaller remit.

But in this article, we’re focussing on how to write an interesting autobiography, which is a more detailed process. We’re going to break it down into three parts:

  • What to write about in an autobiography

The structure of a biography or autobiography

  • How to write an interesting autobiography

The good news is that when you know what to write about in an autobiography, it will help you establish a lot about the structure of your autobiography. And, when you’ve got those two things ticked off, you’ll find it significantly easier to write an interesting autobiography.  

How do you decide what to write about in an autobiography?

Start by making a long list of the things you could write about in your autobiography. Make your list roughly chronological so that you can see how the incidents connect in your personal timeline. Write anything and everything down at this stage.

I suggest you keep working on your list for several weeks. The more you think about it, and the more often you return to it, the easier it will be to extract every possible story you might want to tell. When you have a comprehensive list, I’d leave it a little longer before you take your next step. Go back to your list days (or even weeks) later and look for clues as to how you can tell your story:

  • See if there are there any common themes that bind some of your stories together. It’s easier to build a book if the stories naturally coalesce around a single idea or theme.
  • Think about your life’s journey and look for narrative threads that help you tell that story.
  • Look for any stories that give the most authentic sense of who you are, and how you want to be remembered.
  • Look for – and remove – any stories that don’t feel interesting or relevant.

It’s not just a question of what to write about in an autobiography, you need to consider what not to write about

Given that a biography or autobiography encompasses a whole lifetime of activities, you need to decide what makes the grade in your story and what doesn’t. Knowing who’s going to read your book will help you make the right decisions.

Are you writing your book for family and friends? For a business audience? For a cohort of people who have encountered similar life issues? Keep that audience in mind at all times? Write with them in mind.

If you’re not sure what deserves a place in your autobiography, just picture your readers and ask yourself these questions:

Will this part of my story genuinely interest my readers?

Does this material add anything meaningful to the story I’m telling?

Am I comfortable telling this part of my story?

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’ it doesn’t belong in your book.

Distilling your life into the stories that will survive you

If you’re struggling to home in on the events you want to focus on in your autobiography, it might help you to remember that this book will survive you.

The stories you tell will still be there for people to read about years from now. That can help you to home in on the things that really matter; the things that will define the life you’ve lived.

Some people find the easiest way to distil their life story into a cohesive narrative is to write more than they need, and edit out material at the end of the process. That takes a bit more work, but when you can see the whole story written down, it’s generally easier to identify what really belongs in your book, and what doesn’t.  

Think carefully about the audience for your book

This question of what to write about in an autobiography gets easier the closer you get to your intended audience.  

Run though that list of stories for possible inclusion in your book and see if any of them jump out as being particularly interesting or appropriate for your audience. Equally, there may be some stories that will need to justify their inclusion. For example,

  • Will your family be interested in lots of stories from your work life?
  • Will a wider audience of people reading your survival-against-the-odds story want to know about your life now? Perhaps, if that gives them hope for their own future.
  • Will your children want to know about some of your less savoury stories? They might well do (when they reach an appropriate age) if you present them in a way that will amuse and / or give them the benefit of your reflections on those events.
  • Are you comfortable telling certain stories if they’re controversial in your family? Will telling them pour oil on troubled waters or make matters worse?

Don’t just think about what your readers will be interested in now, think about what might interest them in the future. For example, if you’re writing an autobiography for your children (or grandchildren) there will be insights, stories and reflections that will mean more to them as time passes.

If I were writing my autobiography for my (now) teenage children, I know they’d be interested to read my stories of their childhood escapades. And, as time goes on, and they grow up and potentially have their own children, they’ll probably be even more interested to read about my reflections on being a parent.

In other words, there will be a point when your experiences and theirs match. When what you have to say on any given subject might suddenly feel very relevant. So, try and write an autobiography that will stay relevant to your audience.

If you take nothing else from this article, the single most important lesson for how to write an interesting autobiography is this:

Your autobiography can – and should – obey many of the same rules as fiction.

Just because you’re telling a real story, as opposed to a work of fiction, the same elements of structure, tension and release, and story arc will make your book richer and more engaging.

Let’s discuss the actual section-by-section, chapter-by-chapter structure of your book.

When we talk about structure in books, we’re essentially talking about giving your book a beginning, a middle and an end, and about the chapters that fit within that structure.

We’re also talking about making sure your book progresses organically from event to event. Your reader needs to feel like your book is heading somewhere; it flows.

Try a three-act structure

You certainly don’t have to stick to some rigid structure, but it can help to think of your story like a three-act drama. An example of a simple three-act structure for a biography or autobiography would comprise a beginning, concentrating on the early years of your life, a middle featuring the bulk of the events you want to cover, and an end which brings all of the threads of the story together.

You certainly don’t have to divide your book into three parts. But having the idea of a three-act structure in mind can help you to simplify your storytelling.

Remember that the structure could be thematic, rather than chronological. For example, the introductory stage could be meeting the love of your life, the body of the book could be about your life together, and the concluding section could focus on how your family has grown.

Or, the introductory chapter could focus on the emergence of a great difficulty in your life. The second section would focus on your dealing with it. The third section could illustrate how you overcame it and what you learnt from it.

Break the structure

One of the best things about the ‘rules’ governing the structure of a biography or autobiography is that they are there to be broken…

Just because you adopt a three-act structure, it doesn’t mean you have to start your autobiography at the beginning. It can be very effective – and dramatically justified – to start your story at the end.

Or, you can apply a structure, but still break it up with interludes, diversions, and lists that add supplementary information or insights. A couple of examples:

In a book for a client who had travelled extensively, we devised funny little Trip Advisor style summaries of some of her travel destinations, and interspersed them throughout the book.

A fan of the weird and uncanny who had collected stories of some of life’s stranger happenings included them as an interlude in his book, giving readers enough information to go and pursue their own research into any of the stories that interested them.

Take the reader on a journey

Great books – whether they’re narrative non-fiction or fiction – take their readers on a journey. So, rather than simply chronicling the events of your life, you can find a narrative thread to resemble a hero’s journey narrative, or other dramatic form.

Let’s take a closer look at how you can do that…

Find the thread that binds your story together

Make a chronological list of the major (and interesting or exciting) events of your life. Look at your list and ask some questions to help you find the thread that binds your story together:

  • How did you get from your childhood to where you are now?
  • What were the turning points or moments of crisis along the way?
  • Who were the people who helped or hindered you in your journey?
  • What are the things in your past that suggested where you were going in the future?
  • How did you realise your childhood or youthful dreams?
  • How did you overcome a significant adversity in life?

Finding an appropriate story thread makes writing your autobiography significantly easier. You give yourself a set up, a complication or crisis, and a resolution – all essential components of an interesting and well-told story.

One of the hardest parts of writing an autobiography for many people is having far too much information to include and not knowing what to exclude. Working this way helps you to eliminate all of the material that doesn’t contribute to the main storyline.

Think of it like telling the story of a football match that focusses on the actions of a single player. Your reader would still understand the outcome of the match. They’ll still understand how that player interacted with their teammates, and came into conflict with other players. They won’t get a full match report, but they will get a very focussed story of the game from one angle.

Use your chapters to help you write an interesting autobiography

The way you divide your story into chapters is another way of injecting interest into your autobiography. Whether using cliffhangers to keep readers hanging on to see what happens next, or using chapter breaks to signal changes in tone, your chapters are a useful resource.

In terms of structure, remember that each chapter should be like a scene in a film. They should advance your story in some way, and tell a self-contained piece of the story. If you’re telling a part of the story that requires more space than other parts of your story consider splitting your chapter at a critical moment to create your dramatic cliffhanger ending.

You can do interesting things to the structure of your book with your use of chapters. An incredibly short chapter could be an amusing way of skipping over a part of your story that you don’t want to tell, but that you know people are expecting to read about, e.g.

Reader, I married him.

Spoiler alert. It went really badly, really quickly!

Have fun with your chapters. From the way you name them, to the quotes you use to add interest, to the way you format them, all these things can help make your autobiography more interesting and distinctive.

How to write an interesting autobiography? Remember that the principles of telling a traditional story apply

There’s plenty more you can do to keep things interesting for your readers. Remember that, just like fiction, a compelling autobiography will:

Provide good introductions for all the major characters

You don’t have to talk about everyone you reference in depth, but when it comes to the key players in your life story, make sure you introduce them properly.

Hinge on moments of tension and release

This is the basis of all good drama. Even if you have not lived a life of ‘high drama’ that doesn’t mean dramatic, momentous, stressful, or important things haven’t happened to you. And these are all potential sources of drama.

Be truthful

It’s easy to exaggerate our achievements and nobody will object to you using a bit of dramatic license now and then, However, the more honest and truthful your book is, the more powerful it will be.  

Tie it all up at the end

In this article, we’ve covered the three areas of 1) what to write about in an autobiography, 2) the structure of a biography or autobiography, and 3) how to write an interesting autobiography. We introduced the subject in broad terms, then drilled down into more detail on each subject, much like you might do in your autobiography.

As with writing any book, writing a biography is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s easier to think of it as a series of smaller steps than as one big challenge to tackle. 

Let’s break down the process step by step.

1. Choose Your Subject

Decide who you want to write about. It could be a well-known celebrity, a historical figure, or someone close to you.

In addition to figuring out who you’re writing about, this is also the step where you figure out why you want to write about them. Why is this a story worth telling, and what makes you interested in it? 

Maybe the subject of your biography overcame major hardships in life to achieve success, and that story will inspire others facing similar struggles. Or maybe they made a really unique contribution to the world that not enough people know about, and you want to shine a bigger spotlight on that impact.

Knowing why you’re telling this story will help you make the right decisions about how to research, outline, draft, and edit your biography.

2. Identify Your Target Audience

Understanding your target audience is a crucial step in writing a good biography. You should tailor your biography to the interests and knowledge level of your audience.

A biography for a general audience will differ from one written for experts in a particular field. For example, two biographies about Emily Dickinson would be vastly different if one is written for young children and the other is written for adult poets. 

3. Conduct Research

Dive deep into your research. Use a variety of sources to get a well-rounded view of your subject’s life. Take detailed notes and organize your findings.

Gather as much information as you can about your subject. This includes primary sources like interviews, letters, and diaries, as well as secondary sources such as books, articles, and documentaries.

Here are some primary sources to look for: 

Letters and diaries: These provide intimate insights into the subject’s thoughts, feelings, and daily life, and can often be found in family archives, libraries, and historical societies.

Birth, marriage, and death certificates: These documents can provide crucial dates and familial relationships.

Census data: Census records can provide demographic information and track changes over time.

Property records: These can reveal where the subject lived and owned property.

Employment and school records: These records offer formalized insights into the subject’s education and career.

Military records: If applicable, military records can provide information on service, ranks, and honors.

Autobiography continues to be one of the most popular forms of writing, produced by authors from across the social and professional spectrum. It is also central to the work of literary critics, philosophers, historians, and psychologists, who have found in autobiographies not only an understanding of the ways in which lives have been lived, but the most fundamental accounts of what it means to be a self in the world. The Introduction describes what autobiography means and compares it to other forms of ‘life-writing’. Autobiographical writing is seen to act as a window on to concepts of self, identity, and subjectivity, and into the ways in which these are themselves determined by time and circumstance.

1. Introduction  

Autobiography is one sort of biography, which tells a biography of its author, meaning it's a written account of the author’s life. Rather than being written by somebody else, an autobiography comes through the person’s own pen, in his own words. Some autobiographies are written within the sort of a fictional tale; as novels or stories that closely mirror events from the author’s real world. Such stories include Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield, and J.D Salinger’s The Catcher within the Rye. In writing about personal experience, one discovers himself. Therefore, it's not merely a set of anecdotes – it's a revelation to the readers about author’s self-discovery. In an autobiography, the author attempts to capture important elements of his life. He not only deals together with his career, and growth as an individual , he also uses emotions and facts associated with family life, relationships, education, travels, and any sorts of inner struggles.

1.1 Project in our syllabus:  

As per the new syllabus, Project work has been included as a part of the curriculum. We have made the choice according to the availability of works. 

1.2 Objectives: The main objectives of our project work are - 

(i) Finding out the structural divisions of a story.

(ii) Visualizing the story in Indian context.

(iii) Adding Indian flavor to the strong.

(iv) Taking more of the characters in Indian context.

1.3 Guiding Principle

(i) We should try to locate its difference from Indian cultures.

(ii) Then we must try to fit in the writing into Indian context.

(iii) We should use our daily life experience of Indian culture and society by adding enough Indian words. 

1.4 Limitations

(i) The duration for the entire project was only ten periods.

(ii) It took a long time to select the exact piece of writing which could be transformed.

(iii) For this particular project, group work doesn’t help much as it demands individual imagination and not a number of opinions. 

2. Procedures and Input  

For the project, entitled as an ‘Autobiography’, we worked in groups and sometimes in pairs through a systematic process. Our teacher fixed 10 interventions for carrying out the project. The details of our activities are enumerated below:

First intervention: On the first day, we discussed some of the autobiographical stories. Then we minutely listened to all the stories and decided to write our own autobiography.

Second intervention: On the second day, our teacher taught us different aspects related to the project work. We asked the teacher a number of questions related to what he taught.

Third invention: On the third day, we tried to locate the differences between biography and autobiography. Then we were divided into groups.

Fourth intervention: On the fourth day, we started to change the story so that it looks like self-biography that is called ‘autobiography’. Then we encountered some difficulties with the language that were needed to be changed.

Fifth intervention: On the fifth day, we prepared the draft of our self memoire in our life story. Then we read out our manuscripts. The teacher asked each group to make changes to the script where it was found necessary.

Sixth intervention: On the sixth day, we selected the best manuscript. Then we worked together for its further betterment. Another draft was prepared.

Seventh intervention: On the seventh day, we prepared the final manuscript .Then we read out the manuscript in the presence of our teacher.

3. OUTPUT OF THE PROJECT  

My name is ‘ write your name ’. My friends call me ‘Ananda’. This actually started as a reaction against my own assertion about my best friend, ‘ Joy ’, whom I call ‘Pulak’ as a nickname.

I was born on write the date of your birth . I am the eldest child in our family. My family comprises of five members. These members are my mother, my father, my two sisters, and I. My father is a doctor by profession in the local government hospital. My mother is a school teacher. She teaches English and Hindi in the local government primary school. Ours is a small happy family. 

My father’s name is ‘ write your father’s name ’. He is a renowned person of the town. Some youngsters, who are not amenable to any advice or manners, even call me baap ka beta/ papa ki pari, that is, the son/ daughter of a father, renowned for his technological deeds. 

I read in Class - XI in the School named, ‘ write your school’s name ’ Barddhaman. I’m an excellent student as far as studies are concerned but I’m weak physically. Now, I’m giving attention to the present aspect and have started participating in games. My hobby is stamp-collecting. I want to be a school teacher. As I’m keen on books I would like to grow intellectually while teaching the scholars to grow physically, mentally and spiritually. My greatest attention is directed to evolution of my character and personality.

When I was six, I started attending ‘ write the name of your primary school ’, our primary School. My favourite disciplines there were drawing and literature. I participated in numerous citywide and state-wide drawing contests among children, and even won the first prize in June, 2009, for the best landscape at the Preening Contest. This fact encouraged me to develop my artistic skills, so when I was entered high school, I already knew that I wanted to enter the school where I learnt something especially on ‘Arts’. I worked hard on my skills, and attended fine art courses–at the age of 11, I entered the Institute.

But, I have an experience that I must ever remember in my life. I am speaking of the year of 2020. At the beginning of the year everything is going on smoothly. After enjoying the New Year celebration I was going to prepare myself for the final exam of the previous class. Suddenly, a new pandemic, namely COVID -19, had engulfed the whole nation throughout the world.

Most of the countries were infected with the coronavirus. To prevent this pandemic disease, the government of our country, like the other countries of the world, had announced lockdown. Everything had gone stopped in a moment. The citizen of my country got quarantined for the several months. We were encaged with a fear of getting infected with the dangerous virus.

But, during the lockdown of those days, I had undergone through many recreations just to make me free from boredom. I had created a playlist with happy songs, and sung along, browsed my cookbooks or food blogs for an easy but healthy meal. Also, I had called a supportive friend or family member. Besides, during those days I, also, reminisced by compiling a photo book of the special moments in my life. I had enjoyed myself by g rowing a small herb garden in my window box. However, at present, those fearful days have come over. But we are habituated using sanitizer while washing our hands and also wearing mask when we need to go out.

Finally, my aim is to be a successful person in life. To me, the teaching profession appears to be the noblest and best. I, therefore, shall become a lecturer and adopt teaching as my profession. The profession of a teacher is a highly honourable one. A teacher gets a chance to lead a peaceful life.

4. Conclusion  

4.1 Present Value:

The project we undertook was completed within scheduled time limit. After completing the project we have learnt the following:

(i) How to transform a story rich in dramatic elements into a successful play.

(ii) How to make the play lively by adding suitable dialogues.

(iii) The utility of stage performance in learning the target language.

(iv) How to enjoy group work.

(v) How to develop essential skills such as collaboration, communication, and critical thinking.

(vi) How to use language in context

(vii) The importance of tone and modulation in speech.

(viii) The importance of body language or gesture in communication.

(ix) Importance of the setting, dialogue, music, and props in a drama

(x) How to develop our skills in a happy, non-threatening environment.

4.2 Future:

The product of this particular project will help others in the following way:

(i) They will get a ready script to be enacted.

(ii) They will be able to modify the script to make it more lively.

(iii) They can form an idea about dramatization of a story

(iv) They will be encouraged to take up other stories for dramatization

(v) They will be able to use the script in learning language effectively.

The publication of a book written by Kevin D. Roberts, the president of the group that has coordinated Project 2025, and featuring a foreword by Senator JD Vance, has been delayed until after the presidential election.

The book, “Dawn’s Early Light,” was scheduled to be published in September but will now be released in November. The delay was reported earlier by RealClearPolitics .

Project 2025 , a right-wing policy blueprint prepared for the next Republican president, has become a target of Democratic attacks. The project’s director recently stepped down after the effort drew criticism from former President Donald J. Trump, whose attempts to distance himself from the project became more difficult after he selected Mr. Vance as his running mate.

“In the fights that lay ahead, these ideas are an essential weapon,” Mr. Vance wrote in the book’s foreword, which was published online by The New Republic.

Mr. Roberts is the president of The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank that was extraordinarily influential during the Trump presidency. Some of the far-reaching policy proposals outlined in the nearly 900 pages of Project 2025 include criminalizing pornography, disbanding the federal Department of Education, and ending a variety of programs designed to mitigate climate change.

Mr. Roberts drew criticism recently for saying the country was in the midst of a “second American Revolution” that would “remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

A Heritage Foundation spokeswoman confirmed the delay of the book and provided a statement from Roberts, who said, “There’s a time for writing, reading and book tours, and a time to put down the books and go fight like hell to take back our country.”

Project 2025 shakes up leadership after criticism from Democrats and Trump, but says work goes on

NEW YORK (AP) — The director of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 vision for a complete overhaul of the federal government stepped down Tuesday after blowback from Donald Trump’s campaign, which has tried to disavow the program created by many of the former president’s allies and former aides.

Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts said Paul Dans’ exit comes after the project “completed exactly what it set out to do.” Roberts, who has emerged as a chief spokesman for the effort, plans to lead Project 2025 going forward.

“Our collective efforts to build a personnel apparatus for policymakers of all levels — federal, state, and local — will continue,” Roberts said.

What started as an obscure far-right wish list is now a focal point in the 2024 campaign. Democrats for the past several months have made Project 2025 a key election-year cudgel, pointing to the ultraconservative policy blueprint as a glimpse into how extreme another Trump administration could be.

The nearly 1,000-page handbook lays out sweeping changes in the federal government, including altering personnel rules to ensure government workers are more loyal to the president. Heritage is building a database of potential new hires to staff a second Trump White House.

Yet Trump has repeatedly disavowed the document, saying on social media he hasn’t read it and doesn’t know anything about it. At a rally in Michigan earlier this month, he said Project 2025 was written by people on the “severe right” and some of the things in it are “seriously extreme.”

“President Trump’s campaign has been very clear for over a year that Project 2025 had nothing to do with the campaign, did not speak for the campaign, and should not be associated with the campaign or the President in any way,” Trump campaign advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita said in a statement.

They said, “Reports of Project 2025’s demise would be greatly welcomed and should serve as notice to anyone or any group trying to misrepresent their influence with President Trump and his campaign — it will not end well for you.”

But Ohio Sen. JD Vance , Trump’s running mate, wrote a foreword to a forthcoming book by Roberts in which he lauds the Heritage Foundation’s work. A copy of the foreword was obtained by The Associated Press.

“The Heritage Foundation isn’t some random outpost on Capitol Hill; it is and has been the most influential engine of ideas for Republicans from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump,” wrote Vance.

Quoting Roberts elsewhere in the book, Vance writes: ″We are now all realizing that it’s time to circle the wagons and load the muskets. In the fights that lay ahead, these ideas are an essential weapon.”

Trump campaign representatives did not respond to messages inquiring about whether the campaign asked or pushed for Dans to step down from the project. The Heritage Foundation said Dans left voluntarily and it was not under pressure from the Trump campaign. Dans didn’t immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Project 2025 has many ties to Trump’s orbit

In many ways, Project 2025 served as a potential far-right White House in waiting, a constellation of outside groups that would be ready for action if Trump wins a second term.

The project included not only the detailed policy proposals that Trump could put into place on day one at the White House. Project 2025 was also building a personnel database of resumes for potential hires, drawing Americans to Washington to staff a new Trump administration.

Many Trump allies and former top aides contributed to the project. Dans formerly worked as a personnel official for the Trump administration. And Trump regularly campaigns on many of the same proposals in the Project 2025 book — from mass deportations to upending the Justice Department — though some of its other proposals, including further taxes on tips , conflict with some of what Trump has pledged on the campaign trail.

It was clear that Project 2025 was becoming a liability for Trump and the Republican Party.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign and top Democrats have repeatedly tied Trump to Project 2025 as they argue against a second term for the former president.

The Harris campaign said Project 2025 remains linked to Trump’s agenda, written by his allies for him to “inflict” on the country.

“Hiding the 920-page blueprint from the American people doesn’t make it less real — in fact, it should make voters more concerned about what else Trump and his allies are hiding,” said Harris for President Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez.

For months Trump’s campaign had warned outside groups, and Heritage in particular, that they did not speak for the former president.

In an interview from the Republican convention first published by Politico, LaCivita said Project 2025 was a problem because “the issues that are going to win us this campaign are not the issues that they want to talk about.”

It was almost certain than Trump’s campaign forced the shakeup, said one former Heritage aide.

Trump’s team was well aware it couldn’t risk any missteps from Heritage in this final stretch ahead of the election.

By announcing the departure, Roberts appeared to be sending a signal to the Trump campaign that changes were being made at Heritage to tamp down any concerns over Project 2025, said another conservative familiar with the situation.

If Trump wins the White House, he almost certainly will need to rely on Heritage and other outside entities to help quickly staff a new administration, the person said.

That person and the former aide would only talk on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.

Heritage says Project 2025 is not going away

Project 2025’s website will remain live and the group will continue vetting resumes for its nearly 20,000-person database of potential officials eager to execute its vision for government, the Heritage Foundation said Tuesday.

The group said Dans, who had started the project from scratch more than two years ago, will leave the Heritage Foundation in August. Roberts will now run Project 2025 operations.

Roberts has faced criticism in recent weeks after he said on an episode of former Trump aide Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast that the country is in the midst of a “second American Revolution” that will be bloodless “if the left allows it to be.”

Earlier this month, in an interview before beginning a prison sentence for defying a congressional subpoena, Bannon mentioned Roberts as the type of leader who could land a top job in a Trump White House.

Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts has delayed the publication of his book—featuring a foreword by vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio—until after the election, Roberts confirmed, as the book has come under significant scrutiny due to the Heritage Foundation’s controversial Project 2025 .

Roberts’ book “Dawn’s Early Light” was originally set to be published in September, but has now delayed its publication date until November 12, according to the Heritage Foundation and the book’s online listing (the delay was first reported Tuesday by RealClearPolitics).

“Dawn’s Early Light: Taking Back Washington to Save America” is described online as outlining “a peaceful ‘Second American Revolution’ for voters looking to shift the power back into the hands of the people,” detailing “institutions that conservatives need to build, others that we need to take back, and more still that are too corrupt to save.”

The book's title has been changed, as earlier listings suggest it was originally set to be subtitled “Burning Down Washington to Save America.”

Vance—who’s long been a close ally with the Heritage Foundation—penned the foreword for the book, in which the Associated Press reports he quotes Roberts as saying, “It’s time to circle the wagons and load the muskets.”

Vance also praises the Heritage Foundation as “the most influential engine of ideas for Republicans from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump,” according to the AP and a copy of the foreword published by The New Republic, and notes Roberts’ book “explores many of the themes I’ve focused on in my own work.”

The VP candidate’s praise of Roberts clashes with the Trump campaign’s efforts to distance itself from Project 2025 and the Heritage Foundation, as the ex-president and his campaign advisor have disavowed any connection to the project as it’s come under fire for policy proposals described by Democrats and Trump alike as “extreme.”

Roberts attributed the book’s delay in a statement to not wanting to be distracted from the November election, saying, “There’s a time for writing, reading, and book tours—and a time to put down the books and go fight like hell to take back our country.” Roberts added: “In the coming weeks, conservatives are fully committed to focusing our efforts on helping defeat the left at the ballot box and securing a resounding victory for the American people.”

Roberts’ book and Vance’s involvement with it has already garnered criticism from Democrats, particularly as the Trump campaign has tried to distance itself from Project 2025. “JD Vance literally—literally—wrote the foreword for the architect of the Project 2025 agenda,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said in his first speech as the Democratic vice presidential candidate Tuesday night, as part of a broader attack on his vice presidential opponent.

What Does Project 2025 Say?

Project 2025 is a multi-part project spearheaded by the Heritage Organization with help from other conservative groups, which aims to facilitate the transition for the next Republican president, namely former President Donald Trump. While the project also includes efforts to recruit and train federal workers, it’s come under controversy primarily for its 900-page policy agenda that proposes a total overhaul of the executive branch in line with conservative values like promoting the “nuclear family.” It calls for getting rid of some agencies entirely, including the Departments of Education and Homeland Security, and for upending the executive branch’s workforce to replace career civil servants with political appointees. The policy agenda lays out such proposals as getting rid of climate change and LGBTQ rights initiatives, ending student loan forgiveness, rescinding federal approval for abortion drug mifepristone and imposing baseline tax rates, among numerous other measures.

Key Background

The Heritage Foundation is a major conservative organization that has provided policy blueprints for Republican candidates since Ronald Reagan’s presidency. The group published its Project 2025 policy agenda in 2023, but the policy framework has only recently garnered significant attention and come under fire, as Democrats have cast its proposals as a key reason to vote against Trump in November. Trump’s disavowal of the project also ended up giving it more visibility, as the ex-president said on Truth Social in July that he has “nothing to do with them” and decried some of its proposals as “absolutely ridiculous and abysmal.” Many of the policy agenda’s authors are former members of the Trump administration, including Cabinet secretaries, and the ex-president previously praised the Heritage Foundation’s policy work, saying at a 2022 dinner for the group that it was “going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do … when the American people give us a colossal mandate.”

Roberts’ decision to push back his book date took place days after Project 2025 leader Paul Dans suddenly resigned, which The Washington Post reports came as Trump advisors “grew furious” at the Heritage Foundation for promoting Project 2025 and threatened to blacklist employees from a future Trump administration. The Heritage Foundation said in a statement Dans’ departure coincided with Project 2025 wrapping up its policy work as planned, and the agenda would still move forward with its plans to recruit and train staffers for a future Republican administration.

'Load the muskets': Leaker shares J.D. Vance's introduction to Project 2025 book

Sen. J.D. Vance writes it is time to "load the muskets" in the newly revealed forward of an upcoming book from the architect of Project 2025, the controversial policy platform from which his running mate Donald Trump is desperate to distance himself, a new report shows.

The New Republic Wednesday obtained a pre-publication copy of Vance's (R-OH) introduction to Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts' not-yet-released book, “Dawn’s Early Light."

"We are now all realizing that it’s time to circle the wagons and load the muskets," Vance writes, according to the New Republic. "In the fights that lay ahead, these ideas are an essential weapon."

Trump in recent weeks has gone so far as to claim he has " no idea " behind the Heritage Foundation platform, to which more than 100 of his staffers contributed, after news of its radically conservative recommendations sparked fears on both sides of the political aisle .

The book's publication has now been delayed until after the election, according to reports Wednesday.

But the New Republic reports Vance has "deep ties" with both the foundation and its president, whose book subtitle initially called for "burning Down Washington to Save America.”

And in its forward, Vance heaps praise on Roberts and the ideas revealed in the upcoming book, set to be on bookshelves on Sept. 24, the New Republic reports.

"In the classic American film Pulp Fiction, John Travolta’s character, recently returned from Amsterdam, observes that Europe has the same consumer goods as America, but there it’s just a 'little different,'" Vance writes. "That’s how I feel about Kevin Roberts’s life."

Vance echoes past rhetoric condemning childless Americans as uninterested in the future of their nation.

"We should encourage our kids to get married and have kids," Vance writes. We should teach them that marriage isn’t just a contract, but a sacred—and to the extent possible, lifelong—union."

And he describes the Heritage Foundation as "the most influential engine of ideas for Republicans from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump."

There are many things to say about Tim Walz’s debut last night as Kamala Harris’ vice presidential pick. But I want to zero in on one thing he said, a throwaway joke about JD Vance, that says something important about pundits, parties and politics. It was about that couch.

That couch.

Someone somewhere, I don’t know who or where, started a rumor online about the GOP vice presidential nominee confessing in his book, Hillbilly Elegy , to having had sex with a couch when he was young. There’s nothing to the rumor. (Even the Associated Press fact-checked it before taking down the story.) However, the point was never that it was true. The point was that it could be , given that JD Vance seems like the sort of man who’d have sex with a couch.

Consider this small example . In Detroit, a reporter asked Vance the softest of all softball questions: “You have been criticized for being too serious, too angry. What makes you smile? What makes you happy?” Vance could have given the most boilerplate of all boilerplate answers, like my kids make me smile or serving the American people makes me happy, but no. Instead, he said, “I smile at a lot of things, including bogus questions from the media.” He laughed , without joy – malice, actually. That kind of thing makes you think he’d have sex with a couch.

At any rate, last night, during his debut in Philly, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz never spoke of the couch-sex rumor directly. Nor did he explicitly link Vance to couches, to sex or to sex with couches. His was the most oblique of jokes, meaning it was funny only to people who’d heard the rumor, who dislike Vance and who are tired of Republicans getting away with insulting the Democrat Party. He said he can’t wait to debate Vance “if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up.”

I thought it was great. I know I wasn’t alone. But there were people who didn’t like it, and I don’t mean Republicans who are now faking outrage. I’m talking about former Republicans, sometimes called Never-Trump conservatives, anyway, sniffy pundits who desire more influence over the Democratic Party than they can get, who wanted Kamala Harris to pick Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who have been loud in their disappointment, and who seem to be voicing their resentment through pearl-clutching over a throwaway joke that lit up liberals and Democrats without veering into indecency or poor taste.

If I were to give Never-Trump conservatives the benefit of the doubt (and, of course, you are free not to do that), I’d say they were seeing name-calling where there’s sound political strategy. While insults are, for the Republicans, their own justification, that’s not the case for the Democrats. They serve a purpose, a goal – to wound Trump’s ego.

Everyone knows Trump’s ego is fragile. Flatter him and he’s happy. Criticize him and he’s sad. To him, agreement with him is perfection. Disagreement is intolerable. He’s never wrong. He always wins. And he can be bought on the cheap, because his morals are cheap. A man like that, as Hillary Clinton said, can be baited, like a child, because he does not defer to any authority higher than his own immediate needs. (Over the weekend, he said, “I only like people who like me.”) His ego may be like the sun. The Republicans around him are pulled in by its gravity. But it’s a sun that’s always on the precipice of implosion. That is, after all, what happens when your self-worth is based on your success in dominating other people. The moment they resist, you’re worthless.

Trump seemed to dominate things pretty well as long as Joe Biden was in the running, and as long as the Washington press corps made a fetish of his age, thus obscuring virtually everything, including the fact that Biden’s presidency has been transformational. But now that the president is out of the running, Trump isn’t dominating anymore, and, as is typical of people who must dominate or cry, he seems to want things to go back to the way they were or take his ball and go home .

ABC News reported Tuesday that Trump is not scheduled to appear anywhere in any of the battleground states this week, despite this being the middle of August, a key period, and despite the Harris campaign’s growing momentum. Instead, Trump is sending JD Vance around to stump for him. And then, last night, the former president wrote what can only be described as an insane post on his social media site. He seemed to suggest he wants the president back in the running.

With this, it’s hard to know which came first: Trump’s wounded ego or the Democratic attempts to wound it, but I’m pretty sure it’s the latter. Long before the couch-sex joke, Biden had spent months mocking his then-rival for being “a six-year-old.” (For this, I had called Biden the most combative Democratic nominee of my lifetime.) Harris, since taking over, has turned up that aggression. At her debut rally, she savaged Trump for pulling out of a debate he was supposed to have with her. If you have something to say, she said, “say it to my face.” The Harris campaign has bought television ads to trail Trump’s campaign rallies, saying he’s “ afraid to debate ” Harris. Then, Monday, her campaign posted her schedule, with six rallies in six swing states, next to Trump’s, with one event Friday in the friendly deep-red state of Montana. In the post, her campaign called Trump “ low energy .”

The consequence is a Republican nominee who can’t tolerate being mocked, who won’t go to swing states for fear of being rejected, who can’t adjust, won’t adjust , to his new presidential opponent, who goes on televised tirades so vast and meandering that even his staunchest supporters go on Fox to implore him to stick with policy , and who reacts so badly, according to one pollster, that the more people see him, the less they want to see. Harris, Walz and the rest of the Democrats are finally hitting Trump’s soft underbelly. They have figured out that his greatest asset, his ego, is his greatest liability.

MAGA influencer Laura Loomer, whose reputation is so toxic that even Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) believes she's " mentally unstable ," is sounding the alarm about former President Donald Trump's campaign.

Writing on X, Loomer demanded that Trump make drastic changes to his operation, which in recent weeks has seen him fall behind Vice President Kamala Harris in the polls.

"President Trump needs to make some serious changes in his campaign ASAP," she declared. "The ground game is not sufficient. The offense is lacking. The communication is dismal. The momentum is crashing. Why are people who want to assist being pushed away instead of being embraced? 89 days left. You need a lot more than just 'Vibes.' God only knows how many opportunities have been missed. Sad to see talent go to waste."

In a follow-up post, Loomer further outlined her concerns.

"Let’s just call it like it is," she added. "Trumps strongest allies and biggest donors are all concerned. They see no ground game. Zero calls for accountability from House GOP who is on vacation till September 9th."

The influencer also complained that current president Joe Biden "is going to leave office unscathed and then pardon his crackhead son on the way out."

Loomer, who has been described by one former Florida GOP operative as being akin to " radioactive waste from Godzilla ," has long tried to elbow her way into Trump's inner circle despite fierce resistance from many of his own allies.

Harlan Crow helped fund Swiftboating. Trump campaign continues that legacy in Walz attack

The year was 2004. U.S. Senator John Kerry was the Democratic presidential nominee running to unseat President George W. Bush. The Iraq War was a major campaign issue and Sen. Kerry campaigned against it by accurately attacking his Republican opponent.

"Saying there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq doesn't make it so. Saying we can fight a war on the cheap doesn't make it so. And proclaiming mission accomplished certainly doesn't make it so," Kerry declared upon accepting the Democratic nomination.

Backed by GOP donors, veterans – some with grievances against Kerry – formed a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (SBVT), falsely attacking Kerry's Vietnam War record. It was a massively-funded multi-million dollar machine that helped President Bush win re-election by destroying Senator Kerry's military record, and the term "swiftboating" – an organized political and personal smear campaign leveling false accusations – came into being as a result.

Its first ad was released on August 4 or 5, 2004 – almost 20 years to the day when the Trump campaign began its attack on Governor Walz.

On August 31, 2020 Politico ran an exclusive report: "Swift Boat mastermind to launch massive super PAC to boost Trump."

"The new organization, Preserve America, is poised to begin a $30 million advertising blitz," Politico detailed, adding that it "will be overseen by Chris LaCivita, a veteran Republican strategist who orchestrated the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth takedown of John Kerry in the 2004 presidential race."

Today, Chris LaCivita is the top advisor to Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign.

On Thursday, amid the swiftboating of newly-minted Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz , the governor of Minnesota, The New Yorker's award-winning Jane Mayer wrote : "Remember when John Kerry was Swiftboated by Chris LaCivita who is doing it to Tim Walz now? Guess who funded it? Harlan Crow, the billionaire who has been lavishing freebies on Clarence Thomas."

Back in 2004, that massively-funded multi-million dollar machine, or "millions of dollars in shadowy contributions," as New York Magazine explains it, spent $22,565,360, according to Open Secrets . (That's about $34 million in current U.S. dollars.)

One of Swift Boat's top donors was conservative GOP megadonor Harlan Crow , the Texas billionaire whose financial relationship with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been the subject of numerous bombshell investigative reports. Recently, Senate Democratic Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden detailed some 0f Crow's alleged gifts to Justice Thomas. Legal experts have called for Justice Thomas's resignation, and some legal experts have called for the U.S.. Dept. of Justice to open an investigation into Thomas.

( Crow's funding of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth was made via his privately-held company, Crow Holdings. According to Open Secrets , Crow has made 1193 donations to candidates, PACs, and political parties since 1989.)

Last year, the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) reported, "One of Crow’s first forays into large donations was by providing some of the initial financing of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, an organization that spent millions running attack ads in 2004 against Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry and was later fined nearly $300,000 by the Federal Election Commission for failing to register as a political committee."

"Even as the Supreme Court was deliberating Citizens United ," CREW continued, "Crow reportedly provided the major funding for Liberty Central, another dark money group, this one with links to Justice Thomas."

Citizens United was the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court case that – in a 5-4 decision – declared, effectively, money is speech, opening the floodgates to dark money groups that have poured untold billions of dollars into U.S. politics.

"Liberty Central was a 501(c)(4) organization founded by [Justice Thomas's spouse] Ginni Thomas in late 2009 that counted Federalist Society co-chair Leonard Leo as a board member ," CREW's report states. "Ms. Thomas served as president through November 2010 and was paid a salary of more than $120,000. According to Politico, of the $550,000 in anonymous start-up funds the group received in 2009, $500,000 came from Crow , who also held an event for the group at his Dallas home a few months after it launched."

"In helping bankroll the Republican network of dark money groups following Citizens United , Crow has taken full advantage of the diminishing transparency laws around our politics—which Justice Thomas has been instrumental in dismantling ," CREW concluded.

In 2007, Newsweek published a deeply sourced, 7000-word report on what went on behind the scenes in the Kerry campaign and how it failed to adequately respond to the swiftboating. Essentially, the report suggests, the campaign reacted too slowly, tried too hard to play nice, and did not immediately attack with full force.
