Phd program.

The Research School of Social Sciences is home to one of the best Philosophy programs in the world. It is currently ranked 1st in Oceania and 5th worldwide .

It offers both Master’s and PhD studies in a wide range of areas of philosophy. In both cases, the principal focus of graduate training in the School of Philosophy is on training students to engage in original philosophical research.

Students typically arrive with a strong grounding in philosophy overall, and they leave with a thesis which establishes them as an expert. Master’s students may go on to pursue PhD studies at ANU or elsewhere. And our PhD students typically go on to careers as academic researchers, though many also pursue non-academic careers.

The Master of Philosophy degree is up to 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time and culminates with a thesis of up to 60,000 words. The PhD takes up to 4 years full-time or 8 years part-time. Master’s students work under the direction of a primary supervisor and at least one associate supervisor, while PhD students have a primary supervisor and at least two associate supervisors.

Philosophy HDR students take eight 6-week Foundations seminar modules over the course of 2 years. This coursework provides students with deep knowledge of major philosophical debates and helps introduce them to research methods in philosophy.

Higher degree research (HDR) students thrive in ANU’s unique culture of collegiality and collaboration. Outside of supervision, they talk philosophy with world-leading scholars and fellow HDR students at twice-daily teatimes, regular reading groups, and weekly research talks. In this way, ANU Philosophy HDR students develop not only into experts on their thesis topics, but also into philosophers of great breadth and scope.

Students should begin by considering our areas of research and possible supervisors . They can contact potential supervisors directly or contact the HDR convener  to recommend suitable supervisors.

To apply, students must secure the agreement of a primary supervisor and write a 2-5 page thesis proposal. The proposal should include the main research question, the significance of the topic, the background of the debate, and the approach that will be taken in the thesis. A student’s thesis may change in ways both small and large during the course of their degree, but a strong initial thesis proposal provides a firm foundation on which to build.

Doctor of Philosophy

anu phd program

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is an intensive research degree that normally takes between two and four years of full-time study (or equivalent) to complete. Students submit a thesis of not more than 100,000 words for examination. The thesis must make a contribution to knowledge and relate to the broader framework of the field within which it falls. Students may also be required to undertake some coursework.

The Research School of Population Health (RSPH) academics work within research groups engaged at the leading edge of their respective disciplines. There is significant expertise across many academic areas and academics take significant pride in supporting research students.

As an RSPH research student, you will have access to the highest quality research training in a stimulating and active research environment. RSPH offers a unique opportunity to interact with internationally renowned researchers to tackle issues of significant national and international significance.

For a list of possible student projects please refer to Student Projects.

Medical student research projects

A number of potential research projects related to adult life span development and ageing are directly relevant to the medical field and well suited in scope to medical students' research projects.

They may include investigating the associations between risk factors (eg diet, exercise, medication, lifestyle, genetic predisposition) and health outcomes such diabetes, hypertension, mood disorders, cognitive decline, and dementia or studying how certain health conditions relate to changes in brain structure and function. They may involve systematic searches of the literature, advanced statistical analyses, or hands-on processing of MRI scans.

Understand the entry requirements

To be eligible to be considered for admission to a postgraduate research degree at ANU, you must hold:

  • An Australian Bachelor degree with at least Second Class Honours - Upper (First Class Honours is often required) or its international equivalent, or
  • Another degree with a significant research/thesis component that may be assessed as equivalent to paragraph (1), or
  • A combination of qualifications, research publications and/or professional experience related to the field of study that may be assessed as equivalent to paragraph (1).

All applicants must meet the University's English Language Admission Requirements for students.

Find an academic supervisor

Prospective research students first need to identify a research project and find an academic supervisor.

Review the  fields of research  we offer and contact the academic convenor for advice about potential projects, supervisors, and the pre-application process. The  ANU Researchers  website is also a good place to start looking for a supervisor.

Email your academic supervisor directly to enquire about projects and supervision. Your email should outline the reason(s) why you are attracted to their field of research, the type of research you would like to pursue and a summary of your academic qualifications and research experience. You may also submit a short research proposal, however, this is not mandatory at this point.

The academic supervisor may contact you to discuss your research proposal and possibly other projects, or they may forward your email to other staff in the research school / centre.

Once an academic supervisor has been confirmed to support your application you may proceed to step three.

If you are not sure which area of research or supervisor matches your interest please complete an  expression of interest  and we will get in contact with you. Do not proceed to next step until advised.

Check available scholarships

ANU Colleges and individual research schools, offer a number of  scholarships  which are awarded on a merit basis. You can also talk to your academic supervisor about other sources of funding you might access to assist with living expenses and tuition fees.

Please note, international research scholarships are only awarded to outstanding students and are extremely competitive. Domestic students should be aware that if you are applying for mid-year entry your chances of obtaining scholarship funding may be greatly diminished.

Scholarship applications are included in the program application process, step four.

Submit your application

Applicants should  apply online . Application for admission to a higher degree by research and scholarship is combined in the single application. A one page research proposal and three academic referee reports also need to be included. Ask your referees to complete the  referee report form  and submit directly to ANU.

If you can see this text, your browser does not support iframes.

The PhD in Law is an opportunity for you to engage in high-quality independent research as part of an extended research project.

Program description

The PhD in Law is an opportunity for you to engage in high-quality independent research as part of an extended research project. The PhD degree requires submission of a thesis of not more than 100,000 words that makes a substantial contribution to learning in the field of law. Each candidate has a supervisory panel of academics. Students are encouraged to participate in the activities of the ANU College of Law, and would most often be based on campus and study full-time.

Mode of delivery

The research outcome of a PhD degree is a thesis of not more than 100,000 words. During their study, candidates are assessed against milestones which include: annual plans (completed 3 months after commencement and then annually); annual reports; a thesis proposal review; and an oral presentation.

Research students at ANU must fulfil the minimum residency requirements specified in the Australian Government’s  Research Award Rules 2017  unless approval has been obtained for a reduced period of attendance, or the student is externally based. Applicants should make a detailed case for any reduced period of attendance, preferably at the time of application. ANU also has a  PhD Attendance Requirements Policy  which describes these requirements.

If you are approved to study externally (via distance), the minimum attendance on campus is 4 weeks each year. For further information, please refer to the Guidelines For Externally Based Students on the ANU Law  Apply online  page. Approval to study externally cannot be guaranteed.

ANU Law will provide a suitable work space and computer on the ANU campus in Canberra. All students will have access to Wattle (Web Access to Teaching & Learning Environments), the University’s online learning platform.

We favour applicants who also have a masters degree with a high grade point average.

The level of English language required for Law is high, see How to Apply . If you are an international student, you must provide a current IELTS or TOEFL certificate as proof of your competency. The tests can be arranged through the British Council or the Australian Embassy in your country.

Card image

ANU has the highest level of graduate employability of any Australian university.

In addition, graduating from ANU Law will see you join a prestigious and highly recognised alumni network of over 20,000 professionals in Australia and around the globe.

Academic experts

Each candidate has a supervisory panel of academics, usually drawn from the ANU College of Law’s experts .

With particular expertise in constitutional and administrative law , international law , environmental law , migration law, governance and national security , our academic staff are frequently called on by parliamentary committees, peak bodies, professional associations and the media for analysis, advice and guidance on the law, and what might be done to improve it.

Many of our expert research staff are also award winning teachers who are are always accessible and work closely with you to ensure you successfully complete your studies. We have created a supportive and nurturing environment in which you can thrive.

Admission to practice

A PhD in Law will not provide a basis for admission to practice.

ANU currently enrols domestic research students under the Research Training Scheme (RTS) which is funded by the Commonwealth Government. RTS funded students are not required to contribute to the cost of their tuition for the duration of their program.

Joint and Dual Award PhD programs provide research candidates the opportunity to conduct research at, and graduate with PhD qualifications from, two world-leading research-intensive institutions.

Joint and Dual Award PhD programs deliver an outstanding research training experience in a collaborative environment across two institutions. Working with many of our top-quality research - intensive partner institutions globally, we have set-up a range of Joint and Dual PhD program partnerships with scholarships to support research candidature at ANU.

ANU has existing Joint and Dual Award PhD agreements with a number of partner institutions detailed below.

Joint & Dual Award PhD partner institutions

There are two types of Joint or Dual Award PhD arrangements.

Institutional Agreements - this is an agreement between the ANU and a partner institution to collaborate and exchange multiple PhD candidates between both institutions.

Individual Agreements - this is an agreement between the ANU, a partner institution and an individual candidate to ensure terms are agreed for a single candidate.

We have Joint & Dual PhD arrangements in place with the following institutions:

- Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM)

- Indian Institute of Science (IISc)

- Humboldt University

- Fredrick Schiller University, Jena

-Technische Universitat Dresden *

-Peking University

-University of Chinese Academy of Science (UCAS)

-Jiangnan University *

- Universiti Malay (UM)

- University of Rennes 1 *

-Universite Reims Champagne Ardenne *

-Universite Paris Dauphine *

* Individual Joint or Dual Award Agreements.

How does a Joint or Dual award PhD work?

PhD candidates are enrolled at both institutions, and pay the tuition or enrolment fees at the 'home' institution, whilst the partner institution is known as the 'host'. The candidate works under the direction and responsibility of a supervisory panel co-chaired by a supervisor from each institution. The supervisors collaborate on all aspects of the research project and the candidate spends time (a minimum of 12 months or as agreed under the Joint / Dual PhD agreement) at each institution.

Following successful completion of the program and achieving a satisfactory result in examination the candidate is awarded either a single Doctor of Philosophy degree awarded jointly by both institutions or two degrees / testamurs recognising that the program was carried out under a Joint / Dual PhD arrangement.

Am I eligible to apply for the Joint or Dual Award PhD program?

To be eligible for the Joint or Dual Award PhD you must:

  • have agreement from a proposed supervisor at both your home institution and a partner (host) institution;
  • apply for the PhD program at both institutions (check the programs and courses website at ANU to identify the appropriate PhD program and minimum admission requirements (this is usually an Australian  bachelor degree with first-class Honours or the international equivalent));
  • apply for the Joint or Dual Award PhD program within six months* of commencing your PhD program at the home institution; and
  • commence/enrol in the Joint or Dual Award PhD program within the first twelve* months of your PhD.

* extended timeframes for application and commencement may be allowed under an Institutional Joint or Dual PhD Agreement or in exceptional cases, by approval from relevant delegate/s at ANU.

How do I apply for the Joint or Dual Award PhD program?

In order to receive an offer of admission, you must:

  • check the programs and courses website at ANU to identify the appropriate PhD program;
  • provide copies of your academic transcript, and completion certificates, up-to-date CV, research proposal and at least two referee reports with your PhD application;
  • apply for the Joint or Dual Award PhD program( please contact  [email protected]  for latest versions of the Application Form and Candidature Agreement for Joint or Dual Award PhD program).

For detailed information on eligibility, entry requirements and application process, please click here .

When can I expect to receive my offer of admission?

ANU accepts applications for the Joint or Dual Award PhD program throughout the year.

Once a complete application (with all required documentary evidence) has been received, it usually takes between 8 to 12 weeks for an outcome to be determined and for the ANU to issue an offer of admission.

Offers should usually be accepted within 3 weeks of being issued to enable ANU to provide an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) to support a candidate's student visa application. .

Will I receive a scholarship for the Joint or Dual Award PhD program?

Applicants to the ANU PhD programs are automatically considered for ANU managed scholarships, however there are some dedicated scholarships for Institutional Joint or Dual Award PhD programs within the College  -   ANU College of Science Joint and Dual Award PhD Scholarships . For further information on other ANU scholarships, their conditions and benefits please see the ANU Scholarships website .

Some Joint or Dual Award PhD programs offer scholarships / stipends funded by both institutions - the proposed supervisors would be able to provide more information on availability of these.

Will I need to pay tuition fees at both Institutions?

No, tuition and/or enrolment fees are paid at the 'home' institution only.  However, candidates are responsible for ensuring they have a valid visa, travel and health insurance as required by the 'host' institution.

Scholarships

We have established a dedicated scholarship program to support outstanding international candidates enrolling in our institutional Joint or Dual Award PhD programs. For details, see ANU College of Science Joint and Dual Award PhD Scholarships .

There are also various other scholarships available to support studies at the ANU. For more information, please visit our scholarships webpage.

What was your motivation behind choosing to undertake the Dual PhD program?

The dual award program offered a really unique experience, the ability to gain international research experience while allowing me to continue and expand on my research on Malaria at the ANU. Graduating with a dual PhD was an attractive prospect, and the idea of moving to and being immersed in the vibrant city culture of Berlin was too good an offer too good to pass.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your experience of conducting the Dual PhD program / undertaking research work across two different labs in two separate countries?

I would say the diversity of techniques and practices I was exposed to. I started my PhD in the field of synthetic medicinal chemistry, however, my research work in Berlin centred around cell biology and parasite metabolomics, allowing me to investigate the drug activity of compounds I had synthesised myself. Each lab in each field has a unique way of approaching research, so it was interesting to learn different ways of tackling both academic and experimental challenges.

Any words of advice / suggestions to future PhD candidates on why they should consider a Dual or Joint PhD program?

A dual PhD program allows you to actively peruse a subject that interests you while also having the opportunity to try researching in a different environment (as well as potentially a different country) all the while retaining the valuable research network of your home institution. It's an invaluable experience and I would recommend a joint / dual PhD program to anyone considering it.

ANU is committed to the delivery of high quality research training of PhD candidates through the provision of an exceptional research environment and access to opportunities to work with the best researchers nationally and internationally. Research students at ANU are mentored by world-leading experts, have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and become part of a supportive community and culture of discovery.

Joint and dual PhD programs between ANU and partner institutions are able to deliver an outstanding research training experience in a collaborative environment across two institutions. Students are enrolled at both universities for the duration of the program and must be in residence at each university for a period of time as stipulated in the agreement.

A  Joint Award refers  to the award of a single Doctor of Philosophy degree to participating candidates upon successful completion, where the jointly awarded nature of the degree and the name and insignia of the other Institution, will be indicated on a single testamur awarded by the Home Institution.

A  Dual Award  refers to an award by two collaborating institutions issuing two testamurs, each recognising that the program was carried out as part of a dual award.

A  Cotutelle Program is a type of one-off, non-continuing program arranged for a single individual with a French partner institution without an institutional-level agreement.

Joint and Dual Award PhD programs allow research student opportunities to:

  • participate in collaborative projects between supervisors at home and host institutions
  • experience multiple research environments
  • live and work in different locations

Type of Agreements

Joint & Dual/Cotutelle programs generally fall under one of two types of agreements:

  • Institutional Agreement : This is an over-arching agreement between the ANU Research School/College and another institution that aims to establish a long-term research collaboration. These agreements can be initiated by either the ANU or the partner institution. They are established when institutions want multiple/cohort of students to enrol in the Joint and Dual/Cotutelle program over a long period of time. The agreement specifies the requirements, governance, commitments and clauses for the program established under it and applies to all the students who enrol in such programs.
  • Individual Agreement : This is an agreement that is set up between ANU, the partner institution and an individual student for their Joint and Dual/Cotutelle program. These agreements can be initiated by either the ANU, the partner institution or the student. The clauses in this agreement only apply to the parties included in the agreement and for the duration mentioned. Individual Agreements must be completed for every student even if an overarching Institutional Agreement exists with a partner institution.

Application process

If you are interested in pursuing a Joint or Dual Award PhD, you should apply either at the time of application for admission if you are a prospective candidate, or within six months of commencing your PhD program at the home institution. If you are a current ANU PhD student, proceed to step 1 directly.

Joint and Dual programs must commence within the first 12 months of candidature.

Prospective candidates

As a prospective candidate, prepare your application for admission using the information on the ANU Postgraduate Research page. You must indicate on your application form your interest in studying a joint or dual award PhD program. Follow step 1 alongside your application for admission.  How to Apply

Step 1: Complete the Joint and Dual Award PhD Application form

You will need to provide evidence of a strong research link between the two institutions and articulate the benefits of working in a collaborative research training environment. A good starting point is discussing your interest with your supervisor. They will be able to provide you with information on research links and whether there is an institutional agreement in place (or not).

Once you have completed the Joint or Dual Award PhD Application form , submit it to your Research School . Inform your Research School if you are aware of an existing Institutional Agreement; the HDR Administrator will then attach the Agreement to your application.

What happens next

The application form must be endorsed by the College Associate Dean (HDR) and the relevant authority from the partner institution before approval by the Pro Vice Chancellor Graduate Research. Documents will be processed as per your College’s procedures and internal timelines.   Once your Joint or Dual/Cotutelle PhD application is approved, proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Complete the Candidature Agreement

The Candidature Agreement is a template form for Individual Joint or Dual/Cotutelle award PhD program. It provides you with an overview of the key candidature aspects to negotiate between the two institutions.

In consultation with your ANU Supervisor, complete the Candidature Agreement . This document will also need to be reviewed by the partner institution. Further assistance can be sought from your local HDR Administrator or the Graduate Research Office. Once finalised in principle, the Agreement needs to be signed by all parties.

Please note that you may be provided with an alternative template by your local HDR Administrator for some Institutional and Individual Agreements.

Step 3: Apply for a Joint or Dual / Co-tutelle Award PhD program

1 ANU Application: As a prospective candidate, you should first submit an application for admission using the ANU . You must indicate on your admission application form whether you still wish to be considered for admission if your application for a scholarship is unsuccessful, and your interest in studying a joint or dual award PhD program. Not Applicable
2

Joint and Dual Award PhD Application: In consultation with your ANU Supervisor complete the Joint and Dual Award PhD application form.

Provide evidence of a strong research link between supervisors at both institutions, and an outstanding collaborative research training environment with clear benefits for the PhD student above and beyond a simple visiting appointment to conduct research at another institution.

Submit this form to your Research School.

3

If you are aware of an existing Institutional Agreement, inform your Research School when submitting the Joint/ or Dual/Cotutelle Application form. The HDR Administrator will then attach the Agreement to your application.

If you are not aware of an existing Institutional Agreement, proceed to Step 4.

4 Candidature Agreement (or Individual Agreement) form for Joint or Dual / Cotutelle Award PhD Program: In consultation with your ANU Supervisor complete the Candidature Agreement. This document will also need to be reviewed by the partner institution, further assistance can be sought from your local HDR Administrator or the Graduate Research Office.

Step 4: Approvals

The documents in Step 2 & 4 in the table above are processed as per your College’s procedures and internal timelines. For more information on processing times and approvals please contact your local HDR Administrator, or the Graduate Research Office.

Applications to the University are assessed on an ongoing basis. The ANU will contact you about the result of your application as soon as possible. Applications usually take between 6-8 weeks to assess, or longer if you are applying for a scholarship. All communications, including application outcomes, are sent to your email account so it is important that you provide an email address in your application that you check regularly and you can easily access.
