And it is not just any leaves but the majestic Chinar leaves, famous for transitioning into riots of colours. Autumn: The golden season of Kashmir valley

Kashmir, often called “Heaven on Earth,” is the most loved tourist destination across the world. Whether it’s summer in Kashmir, monsoon, autumn, or winter, tourists love to enjoy the scenery and landscapes but, when it comes to those travel enthusiasts who love to witness the cool temperature and vibrating colours of the falling flowers, there is no better time to visit Kashmir other than the autumn season.

Autumn is called ‘Harud’ in Kashmiri – which refers to the time of harvest, and is visually the most awe striking of all seasons. This is also the shortest of all seasons, stretching between mid-October to mid-November.The autumn season in Kashmir begins from September and lasts until November. The temperature during the autumn season stays between 9°C and 20°C, resulting in cold and sweet winds. During that season, the leaves of trees turn golden and reddish, creating a breathtaking view for visitors, making it the best season to visit Kashmir.

Kashmir in the autumn season is a breathtaking and awesome display of brilliant colours and beautiful landscapes. The atmosphere evolves into a fascinating artwork of golden-hued trees, glistening rivers, and mountain peaks covered in snow, which creates an enchanting environment that attracts hundreds and thousands of visitors.

On normal days, travellers adhere to these gardens during the summer season to relax underneath the shades of leafy chinar leaves, but when it comes to October, these dazzling autumn leaves attract a lot of tourists, especially newly married couples, travel enthusiasts, and filmmakers.

Autumn in Jammu and Kashmir is quite short, especially in Jammu. After an extremely hot July, August welcomes the humid and restless monsoon, and September experiences the anxiety of its absence. It’s the October month, which farewells the summer and starts celebrating summer like falling in love for the first time.

The Autumn season in Kashmir is highlighted by a comfortable drop in the temperature and an easy transition from monsoon to winter. The surrounding area is frequently visited by tourists during this time of year due to its magnificent landscapes and vibrant greenery.

Kashmir has again become the first choice of international tourists. Over fifteen thousand foreign tourists have visited the Kashmir Valley in the first six months of 2023. While the number of tourists coming to Kashmir has broken all previous records, at the same time, foreign tourists have kept their date with Kashmir its all-time high arrival of foreign tourists in the Valley in the last three decades. In 2022, the total number of foreign tourists who visited the Kashmir Valley was around 4,000.

International travellers are once again flocking to the enchanting and picturesque destination of Kashmir. From January 1 to June this year, an impressive surge of over 15,000 foreign tourists has reconnected with the Valley, and authorities expect this number to increase significantly by the end of the year. The sharp increase indicates a growing attraction towards Kashmir as a preferred destination among international travellers.

The government of Jammu and Kashmir hosted a G20 meeting in May. Ambassadors and foreign delegates from around 17 countries participated in these meetings with a focus on tourism. The government is hopeful that G20 meetings held in Srinagar would translate into more promotion of Kashmir tourism across the world. The numbers have already crossed all the previous records and the government is also planning to do international promotions, especially in Southeast Asian, Middle East and North American countries.

It is late autumn in Kashmir, and villagers around Pampore – also known as the saffron town of Kashmir – are picking the delicate flowers to fill their wicker baskets.

Kashmir’s saffron (Crocus SativusKashmirianus), known for its flavour and colour, is harvested just once a year from late October till mid of November in Autumn season as it has many uses in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and perfumery as well as in the textile dyes.Saffron harvesting season in Kashmir runs in late October-early November. One of the best destinations to start your purple hunt is Pampore, nicknamed Saffron Town of Kashmir.

In Autumn, entire Kashmir valley is bathed in different hues of red, brown and orange. All the leaves change into multi-colored works of art to eventually fall away. Autumn is indeed Kashmir’s golden season and the sights are a pleasure for the discerning eyes.

This season is absolutely perfect for taking beautiful scenic photos and spending time outdoors. While camping, exploring, long walks and drives along the poplar-lined boulevards are popular among nature lovers, the children are often seen playing cricket under the shade of the mighty Chinar trees.

A little nip in the mornings and evenings and the gentle warmth of the autumn sun are refreshing while evenings are a perfect time to sit togetherin the evening with friends or family around the bonfire. Chinars across the Valley attract tourists as well as locals during autumn when its leaves turn blood-red, mauve, orange, beige and brown before these eventually fall on the ground during the winters.

The Mughal Gardens on the banks of Dal Lake are attracting tourists who want to witness the hues of Chinar that started changing in the middle of October and have these days acquired bright colours.

The beautiful atmosphere of the region is enhanced by the coolness in the air, mild sunshine throughout the day, cold mornings and evenings and burning poplar trees all around during this period. Mughal Gardens are the first choice of tourists during this season as these gardens are filled with poplar trees.

The proactive promotions of Jammu and Kashmir tourism department both domestically and internationally, has played a vital role and collaborative marketing campaigns, roadshows, and participation in global tourism events have helped in projecting Kashmir as a must-visit destination. The pristine natural beauty, diverse cultural heritage, and unique experiences offered by the Valley have also contributed to its allure.

On the cusp of autumn, Travel+Leisure India & South Asia’s   contributor travels to Kashmir where shades of gold and crimson fill his eyes and heart.

Embarking on a journey in Kashmir during the transition from summer to autumn was like stepping into a photographer’s dream. As I ventured into the heart of this captivating land, the landscapes unfolded before me, and each click of my camera captured not just scenes, but emotions and stories that echoed the beauty of the season.

My photographic quest commenced on the serene waters of Dal Lake, which mirrored autumn’s hues. The vibrant chinar trees along the shore were a prelude to the palette that awaited me. I entered a Mughal fantasy at Nishat Bagh.

The ancient chinar trees stood as watchmen, their leaves creating an incredible colour mosaic. The dappled sunshine painted fascinating patterns that appeared to dance in front of my camera. My eyes were pulled to a road that was concealed by a canopy of chinar trees.

On the third day, Shalimar Bagh greeted me with its regal beauty. The fountains and terraces provided dynamic layers to my compositions; their inherent beauty further enhanced by the backdrop of the vivid foliage. I always wanted to experience the Hazratbal Shrine during the autumn. The shrine seemed like a living work of art—a canvas where human craftsmanship gracefully merged with nature’s beauty. At Chinar Bagh, I was welcomed by trees acting as natural frames. The footbridge in Chinar Bagh—an architectural marvel in its own right—offered an elevated vantage point to capture the splendour of autumn.

As I wandered through the village of Pampore, a single tree stood as the centrepiece of autumn’s performance. Its leaves, adorned in gold and crimson, stood out against the rustic backdrop. Stepping into Achabal Gardens during sunset was like walking into a dream. As the sun began its descent, a golden glow blanketed the surroundings, creating an otherworldly ambience. The fountains played a soft melody, and the play of light and shadow became even more pronounced. With every click, I watched the colours deepen. My camera was not just a device; it was my companion, my storyteller, and my bridge to capturing the soul of Kashmir’s autumn.

As I concluded my photographic journey, I carried with me more than just images; I carried memories that encapsulated the spirit of the season. Each photograph was a testament to a land transformed by nature’s brush, and a promise to forever preserve the enchantment of autumn through my photography.

The autumn in general, even in old Greek and other European languages used to be synonymous with harvest. Later, as populations started moving to towns and away from the fields, it became known as a season between summer and winter, the period associated with fall of the leaf; and the season became known as “Fall” like end of winter associated with springing of leaves became Spring.

Autumn in Kashmiri is called Harud . It is the period between end of September to mid- November. This year it seems to have been a bit late because of a delayed onset of summer which was preceded by a longish harsh winter. The season has its charm of changing colours of leaves on trees. When green turns to golden and then reddish-orange before turning brown and finally falling to ground. In the parks and gardens, especially the countryside with Chinar trees, known as “buen” in Kashmiri, shedding of leaves during this period creates a magical golden aura. Walking down the lawns and even streets gives the sound of rustling over these dry colourful leaves. It produces a magical aura that lasts in the mind for very long. The weather is fabulous with misty mornings and evenings having a cool nip reminding of the coming winter, but days are sunny and warm. This is an incredibly great combination. Going to the country side one can see paddy being cut with sickles and then stacked in huge piles to dry. This stacked paddy is then thrashed for segregating the grain. This is a typical site of Kashmiri autumn. The best season to be outdoors and enjoy the fragrance in the air with very comfortable temperatures.

If you move out of Srinagar and go towards south Kashmir during this period and reach Pampore, a part of Pulwama district, an amazing purple-colour over large areas will greet you. These are the saffron fields in full bloom. Similar fields can be seen in districts of Badgam and Kishtwar. The best variety, however, is in Pampore, on both sides of the national highway going towards Banihal. The soil and the climate are ideally suited for its cultivation. The saffron from Kashmir is far superior than the Iranian variety which has much lower colouring material called crocin. The red saffron threads of this flower are carefully handpicked by harvesters, to be sold in the market after picking the saffron threads from the flowers; a delicate practice mastered by womenfolk in the families. They separate the delicate saffron threads from the flowers. These threads are then dried in sunlight after spreading evenly at a certain thickness on white sheets. These are then preserved in a cotton cloth so that air can continuously pass through to avoid its decomposition. It is a source of livelihood for more than 30,000 families in that area.

Going towards the hilly areas one can see the maize and walnut trees with their fruit getting ready to be harvested. It is also a time when after a day’s satisfactory harvesting, the inhabitants sit together and sip a cup of steaming Kahwa or the nun chai along with the gossip of the day with a makkaye chot (corn bread) or Toumle chot (bread from rice flour). A background of melodious sound of flowing streams with water splashing over small pebbles, and intermittent noise from insects and crickets, is music to all ears. Going towards apple producing areas of Sopore in North Kashmir or Shopian in South Kashmir, one can see cartons of apple being transported to various parts of the country. The previous practice of buying from mandis is being rapidly replaced by merchants coming from all over the country directly to orchards and booking the orders.

The other activity after the harvesting is over is to prepare for the coming winter are: stockpiling essentials, pruning trees, covering water pipes with cloth and foam to prevent freezing. Another important task is getting Kangris (an earthen pot woven around with wicker; later filled with hot embers kept under the traditional winter clothing called pheran). Finally taking out and cleaning pherans to keep warm during the forthcoming freezing winters. The practice of drying the vegetables and fish in the form of garlands to be consumed during winters is still prevalent in the countryside and smaller towns. This is despite the fact that fresh vegetables are available throughout the year because of improved transportation even during the difficult winter months. These dried vegetables “Haukhe Syun” (turnip, bottle gourds, brinjal and tomatoe), and various sizes of dried and smoked fish called “Hogada”, although originally meant for tiding over the difficult months, are considered delicacies now.

Autumn brings the fond memories of the year spent and it is time to pay gratitude to the Almighty for all the favours bestowed on us. It is also time to look forward for a new and hopefully an exciting year. It is undoubtedly the best of all seasons – the “Golden months of our lovely smiling Kashmir”.
