Category: Grad School, University-Wide ETD Fall 2024 Submission Deadline

5:00 pm – 5:00 pm November 25, 2024

Monday, November 25, 2024 - 5:00pm

Each semester has a deadline for the initial submission of theses and dissertations to ProQuest.  The deadline is generally two weeks prior to the final deadline.  Plan your defense accordingly. The document submitted to ProQuest is expected to be a final version, meaning it has been successfully defended, corrections the committee wants have been made, and there are no more content changes.

Students are highly encouraged to read and follow the Thesis and Dissertation information available on the Graduate School’s website at: https://grad.msu.edu/etd. This site gives instructions on formatting, required paperwork, and how to submit to ProQuest.

The Graduate School will not accept documents for review for the current semester after 5:00PM ET on the submission deadline date.

The Ph.D. Program Requirements

Course of study.

Doctoral students work closely with their guidance committee to formulate their plan of study. This includes an annual evaluation by the guidance committee made up of four regular MSU faculty members (as further defined in the Graduate Handbook) and a meeting with the guidance committee chair each semester to discuss the annual evaluation, progress toward the degree, and professional development. The guidance committee will administer the comprehensive examination by the end of the sixth semester.

The purpose of the comprehensive examination is twofold. First, it ensures that doctoral students have mastered the necessary background material in philosophy to begin their own specialized dissertation research. Second, it provides doctoral students with close supervision and advice in the early stages of their dissertation project. To accomplish these related purposes, the comprehensive examination is divided into three steps:

  • The guidance committee and the graduate students determine the format and topic of the comprehensive exam over the area in which the student has chosen to write the dissertation — the format may be, for example, one or more papers or a take-home exam with multiple questions;
  • If the guidance committee passes the written exam, then the student will propose a bibliography and prospectus for the dissertation;
  • If the guidance committee approves the bibliography and prospectus, the guidance committee will meet with the student, offer advice on the dissertation, and in consultation with the student set the timetable for writing the dissertation.

Finally, each student must write a dissertation and defend it orally to the satisfaction of the guidance committee.

The comprehensive examination and all course work must be completed by the end of the eighth semester; all requirements for the degree must be completed within sixteen semesters of the time a student first enrolls as a doctoral candidate. Students should consult the MSU Graduate Programs bulletin for University regulations.

Requirements

  • PHL 800—Proseminar in Philosophy and PHL 801—Teaching Philosophy
  • a minimum of 33 credits must be graduate seminars
  • at least two courses/seminars in each of 4 areas: Logic and Philosophy of Science (includes Philosophy of Language); Metaphysics and Epistemology; Value Theory (includes Social and Political); History of Philosophy
  • one in the field of the dissertation
  • one in the minor field
  • two in areas other than the dissertation or minor field
  • a minor field within philosophy, distinct from the field of the dissertation OR
  • an interdisciplinary minor field consisting of a PHL course/seminar and two courses/seminars in one or two other disciplines
  • Pass the Comprehensive Examination
  • Complete an approved dissertation prospectus or topic statement
  • Complete, defend and submit to the graduate school an approved dissertation
  • Meet the department logic requirement
  • Meet the foreign language requirement (if required)
  • Develop a teaching portfolio
  • a minimum of 24 (maximum of 36) credits of PHL 999
  • Satisfy the general requirements of the university and college for the Ph.D. degree (The university requires one year of residence (2 consecutive semesters and 6 credits); normally students spend three or more years in residence.)
  • Foreign language courses
  • Credits taken to fulfill the logic requirement
  • Non-PHL courses/seminars (exception: up to 6 non-PHL credits can be counted toward the 45 credits as long as they are relevant to the dissertation work or part of the interdisciplinary minor)
  • Credits for courses or seminars for which the student has earned a grade of less than a 3.0.

Students who enter the program with an M.A.

Students who enter the doctoral program with an M.A. in Philosophy may have up to 21 credits waived upon recommendation of their guidance committee; of the remaining 24, a minimum of 18 must be seminars (excluding PHL 801). Students entering with other master’s degrees (not in philosophy) may have up to 15 credits waived, and of the remaining 30, a minimum of 24 must be at the 800-level (excluding PHL 801). These waiver rules set maxima; the guidance committee may waive fewer credits, depending on the student’s prior preparation in the discipline.

Students who enter the program with a B.A.

For all students entering the program from the B.A., the guidance committee, in the first semester, reviews the student’s previous academic preparation and files a “Distribution Requirement Report” in which it may waive a maximum of 3 credits in each of 2 areas, or 6 credits in one area, citing upper division courses on the previous transcript. Students who previously completed an M.A. in Philosophy may have up to 3 credits in each of 4 areas waived. These rules set maxima; committees may waive fewer or none, depending on the student’s prior academic experience and achievement.

Dissertation Completion Fellowships (DCF)

Dissertation Completion Fellowships are funded by the Graduate School at Michigan State University and are intended to expedite the completion of strong dissertations by providing students additional funding and thus time to dedicate to the completion of their dissertations. The College may provide a small number of additional College-funded DCFs.

Eligibility

  • Students must be positioned to submit the final versions of their dissertations to the Graduate School within one year of receiving the fellowship (for a Spring 2024 DCF, the dissertation must be submitted by Spring 2025).
  • Students must have their “comprehensive exam passed date” entered in Grad Plan by Friday, November 10, 2023 at noon to be eligible for a spring or summer DCF via this competition.
  • The deadlines for proposal defense are new this year. Please note we are sharing these deadlines well in advance so that all are aware. If a student is not going to be eligible for a DCF, these deadlines allow them time to make arrangements for other funding and allow the College to repurpose the DCF to a student not originally funded. They also allow funds to be disbursed on the timeline required by the Graduate School.
  • Students must be writing a solo-authored dissertation, not a collaborative dissertation.
  • Students who have already defended their dissertation and are engaged in revisions at this time are not eligible for a DCF.
  • Students who plan to defend their dissertation in late spring and complete revisions during summer are only eligible for a DCF in spring, not a summer DCF. Summer 2021 was the last summer where that practice was permissible.

Terms of award

  • Spring DCF: $9,000 fellowship.
  • Summer DCF: $7,000 fellowship.
  • Both Spring and Summer fellowships are funded and disbursed by the Graduate School (or possibly the College) in Spring or Summer semester. The funding differential between Spring and Summer reflects length of time for work.
  • Under federal law, a student must be enrolled in at least one credit during the semester they receive the fellowship. 1
  • While receiving a DCF, a student may not hold more than a quarter-time assistantship or other appointment consisting of more than 10 hours of work/week. Additionally, a student who works full-time, whether at MSU or elsewhere, is welcome to explain how this funding will create additional release time for them from their full-time employment, during which they will focus on their dissertation.
  • A student may receive only one DCF during their time at MSU.

1 If a student plans to receive the fellowship during summer semester, the student must be enrolled during summer semester. If a student will not be enrolled during summer, then the fellowship will be initiated in late spring for use during the summer. If and only if issuing the fellowship during the spring would have an adverse impact on the student’s financial aid, the College will pay for 1 credit of summer enrollment so that the fellowship may be disbursed during summer.

Submission, selection, and key dates

  • Students submit applications to their department by a deadline announced by the department.
  • Departments may require students to submit the dissertation director’s statement, or may allow the dissertation director to submit the statements directly to the department.
  • Departments review and rank the applications; departments submit these rankings to the College by Friday, December 1, 2023, at noon.
  • The Office of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs selects recipients based on departmental ranking and allocation of fellowships across the College.
  • By mid-December, the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs notifies recipients and departments/programs of decisions.
  • By mid-December, the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs notifies the Graduate School of the recipients; the Graduate School makes the award in Spring or Summer (if College-funded, the College makes the award).

Application requirements

  • Discuss the dissertation research, overall
  • Include a timeline for completion with major benchmarks
  • MSU transcript for all PhD program coursework.
  • Reaffirm (a) the proposal and (b) the timeline for completion
  • Summarize the dissertation’s strengths

Selection Criteria

  • Please inquire with your department for more information used in ranking decisions.
  • The Office of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs reviews select applications to confirm their completeness as indicated above in “Application Requirements.”
  • The Office of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs allocates awards roughly proportionally to the number of full-time doctoral students in each department; the Office defers to departments’ rankings of nominees within departments.

Additional Information

  • During summer 2021, students beginning their dissertation writing process became eligible for DCFs for the first time. Students cannot be simultaneously eligible for a DCF and an SRF.

History PhD Candidate Spotlight: NAEd Spencer Dissertation Fellow Gloria J. Ashaolu

Posted on August 14, 2024 August 20, 2024 Author mcdon625

 By: Patti McDonald

Gloria J. Ashaolu, a Michigan State University History PhD candidate majoring in African American history with minors in U.S. history and Black comparative/diaspora history, was recently named a 2024 National Academy of Education (NAEd)/Spencer Dissertation Fellow.

This prestigious fellowship was only offered to 35 graduate students nationwide. The fellowship supports these students with the writing phase of their dissertation. The fellowship is comprised of three key components: fellows receive $27,500 for one academic year (distributed in two installments), students participate in two professional development retreats facilitated by NAEd members and other distinguished scholars, and have the opportunity of selecting an NAEd member or another respected scholar as their mentor to offer advice and assistance during the school year.

We sat down with Gloria and asked her about her dissertation, how grateful she is for being recognized as a NAEd/Spencer Fellow, and why she decided to major in African American history and minor in U.S. history, and Black comparative/diaspora history.

What were you thinking when you found out you were awarded The NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship?

I was overwhelmed with joy and a deep sense of gratitude.

What is this fellowship going to allow you to do? How is it so helpful you received this?

The financial support from the NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship alleviates the need for significant employment and will allow me to dedicate more time to my dissertation—toward meeting the goals I set for my time to degree trajectory. I am also immensely grateful for the unique opportunity to engage with members of my cohort and distinguished scholars in the field of education at the two professional development retreats organized by the National Academy of Education. Participating in the discussions and sessions will provide me with the resources and insight to meaningfully contribute to the field and the improvement of education. Furthermore, fellows are paired with mentors who will provide further research and career development over the academic year.

What is your dissertation about? Tell us about it in a few sentences.

Between the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, the model of educational vision Black teachers fostered and were deeply committed to greatly mirrored what we today regard as anti-racist systems of knowledge and educational practices. My dissertation attends to the understudied educational activism, pedagogies, and praxes of local Black teachers during the Early Black History Movement through a biographical analysis of the life and times of Jane Dabney Shackelford, a Black female educator from Terre Haute, Indiana who was most active during the era of Jim Crow segregation. The educational trajectory and systems of teaching Shackelford and her peers embodied serve as a useful tool for conceptualizing the significant ways in which local schoolteachers cultivated an intentional educational and intellectual practice that challenged the beliefs, politics, and policies of Jim Crow segregation. Driven by what Anna Julia Cooper referred to as the “moral forces of reason and justice and love,” these educators inspired Civil Rights Movement participants, Black Power Movement activists, and Black Studies revolutionaries.

Why is this type of research so important?

Amid the regime of violence, discrimination, and disfranchisement of Jim Crow segregation, local Black teachers played critical roles in the lives of countless Black youth by educating them about their rich history, heritage, and culture. This study situates the underappreciated presence and pedagogies of these educators within their rightful historical legacy. The first contribution of this project entails the study of the life and times of an influential—yet understudied—historical actor as a window into the education-activism of Black teachers during the Early Black History Movement. Second, this project attends to the principles and conventions of Jim Crow North, by challenging static, flattened, and selective narratives that loom in popular remembering of the era of Jim Crow segregation. Third, the use of the robust repository that makes up the Shackelford papers seeks to excavate the scholarly and intellectual work and the service ethos that guided her educational activism and that of her community of educators.

Why did you decide to major and minor in African American history, U.S. history, and Black comparative/diaspora history?

The decision to major and minor in African American history, U.S. history, and Black comparative/diaspora history in the Michigan State University History PhD program was inspired by the trajectory of my research, the opportunity to learn from leading scholars in the fields, and my aspiration to create meaningful historical work that helps us better understand the present through our collective history towards a just and inclusive society.

Who have been some of your mentors within the History department?

My mentors within the department include my major Advisor, Dr. Pero G. Dagbovie (University Distinguished Professor of History, Associate Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, and Dean of the Graduate School), and Dissertation Committee Member, Dr. LaShawn D. Harris (award-winning historian, Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lecturer, and Associate Professor of History). I am sincerely thankful for their instrumental guidance and supportive mentorship.

Anything else you would like to include?

I am also grateful to God for the scholar-friends in the Department of History and College of Education who have been thought-partners and for their community of support.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Graduate students looking to highlight their scholarly achievements, compete for monetary awards and recognition, and hone their research communication skills are now able to register for second annual Penn State Three Minute Thesis competition , hosted by the J. Jeffrey and Ann Marie Fox Graduate School

Registration to compete is open through Friday, Oct. 25, to all degree-seeking graduate students at any Penn State campus.

Penn State community members, including graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, faculty and staff, are also invited to register as a judge by the Oct. 25 deadline for the event's first round.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. Each competitor has three minutes to speak and can use only one presentation slide to effectively explain their research to a general audience.

The competition will take place over two rounds. Judging for the opening round, which is a video format, will take place Nov. 4-8. The Fox Graduate School will be hosting the final round in partnership with the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) and the Fox Graduate School Alumni Society on Saturday, March 29, 2025, livestreamed from the Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus.

A small group of invited judges will evaluate the final round presentations and award first and second place. One competitor will also receive a People’s Choice award, sponsored by the GPSA, which will be decided based on in-person and online audience voting.

The Fox Graduate School will also be hosting an upcoming two-part online workshop series in collaboration with two faculty members, Marcy Milhomme , associate teaching professor for continuing education in communication arts and sciences, and Andy Gustafson , associate clinical professor of accounting, that is designed to prepare students for the 3MT competition and set graduate students up for success with future presentations. Sessions will take place Sept. 25 and Oct. 2 , followed by Oct. 8 and 15 .
