THE DEVELOPMENT AND USAGE OF DZONGKHA HONORIFICS

Profile image of Dr. Kharchen Wangchuk R I N Z I N Rinpoche

The purpose of this study is to examine the use of linguistic and non-linguistic (kinesic expressions) politeness strategies in Dzongkha (the official language of Bhutan) by adapting the theory and principle of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). Thus this paper attempts to study whether, in the absence of its complex honorific system, Dzongkha can convey politeness (both negative and positive politeness). Both naturally occurring speeches and closed role-play data (dramatised video tape) have been employed for this particular investigation. Naturally occurring data like the speech of H. M. the King is used with the help of a Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS) T/V programme. Moreover, self-spoken expressions (by myself, the author) have been used to investigate Dzongkha polite speech. The closed role-play research data is utilised with dramatised video tape played by the native speakers of Dzongkha and trainees of the Royal Institute of Management (RIM), Bhutan. The application of the politeness theories to the discussion of the naturally occurring data and closed role-play records revealed that Dzongkha is often considered to be a language of honorific politeness or negative politeness. Thus, it is required to employ its complex honorific terms and expressions in order to result in and be attuned to the politeness phenomenon. Hence, there is some apparently universality in the usage of politeness strategies, but it differs from culture to culture and requires more research to affirm the complete appropriateness of universal principles of linguistic politeness.

Linguistic politeness has occupied a central place in the social study of language; even it has been the subject of intensive debate in sociolinguistics and pragmatics. A lot of linguistic scholars have carried out studies on linguistic politeness in a wide range of cultures. As a result, several theories have been proposed on linguistic politeness and have been established as scholarly concept. The major aim of this paper is to review the literature on linguistic politeness as a technical term. It will present some of the most widely used models of linguistic politeness in literature. It also tries to gloss the basic tenets of different theoretical approaches, the distinctive features of one theory versus another. There are some concepts of politeness that will become the subject of discussion of this article. These concepts are proposed by (1) Robin Lakoff, (2) Penelope Brown and Steven Levinson (3) Geoffrey Leech.

The notions of 'maxims' due to certain moral imposition implications instead they theorize Leech's (1983) maxims i.e., generosity, tact, modesty, approbation, sympathy, and agreement—unanimously as the Grand Strategy of Politeness (GSP) inclusive of all politeness principles/maxims. Moreover, the authors developed GSP as a super-maxim to investigate linguistic politeness in communication, they proposed to test GSP in a bifurcate generalized parameter in Western languages like German, English, and Eastern languages like Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Slavic languages in particular Russian. The present study's objective is to summarize the key notion of politeness theory presented from 1983 and onwards. The research approach used in the study was qualitative research, based on reviewing literature and multiple case studies on the phenomenon investigated. The authors accept the numerical importance and idiosyncratic deviations of socio-linguistic dimension in linguistic politeness of German, English, and Eastern languages i.e., Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Slavic languages, in particular Russian language. However, GSP as a framework to study politeness may be implied within such variations under investigation. Nevertheless, this research study does not reject the sociocultural differences and changing trends within common cultures and sub-cultures, rather they emphasize generalizability in terms of behaviour that may be found in different cultures. Thus, the present study proposes GSP—despite differences, as a model to study politeness in each language and culture discussed in this article to make a unified system of linguistic politeness norms and strategies. This study is significant for exploring GSP in politeness theory from West and East perspectives.

Daniel Kadar

This is the first edited collection to examine politeness in a wide range of diverse cultures. Most essays draw on empirical data from a wide variety of languages, including some key-languages in politeness research, such as English, and Japanese, as well as some lesser-studied languages, such as Georgian. The volume also includes four studies that discuss theoretical and empirical aspects of 'face', a construct that continues to attract much attention across disciplines. The specially-commissioned essays in this collection will be of interest to scholars, researchers and advanced students in sociolinguistics, pragmatics, discourse studies, anthropology and intercultural communication.
