What should I know about the HUMSS curriculum?

  • What is HUMSS

Major Classes in the HUMSS Curriculum

Advantages of the humss strand, possible college courses for humss graduates, possible career paths for humss graduates, why you should choose humss.

HUMSS, which stands for Humanities and Social Sciences, is one of the four major strands that Reedley International School offers to our senior high school students.

This strand tackles a wide range of disciplines, with a special focus on the investigation and inquiry into human situations. Like other stands, it provides learners with a deeper understanding of specific fields. In HUMSS’s case, it is designed to effectively prepare students who want to pursue a degree in liberal education.

In this post, we detail the HUMSS curriculum at length, and why an incoming senior high school student may opt for this strand.

What is HUMSS?

The HUMSS curriculum covers a variety of subjects that focus on looking at the world and its people from various points of view. In this strand, each learner will develop a deeper understanding of culture, politics, literature, arts, and society — and how each influences the pressing issues of our world today.

In this curriculum, learning activities are directed towards the learner’s development in critical thinking, oral communication, and comprehension of media and information. Here, students will also hone their skills in reading and writing on a professional level.

These lessons will prepare students for more sociological and artistic careers. At Reedley, we make sure each of our HUMSS graduates acquires the appropriate mindset, skills, and means to communicate articulately, think critically, and exercise empathy in their chosen fields.

So, what are the subjects you can expect to learn in the HUMSS curriculum?

As this strand is designed to develop students’ skills in communication, comprehension, writing, critical thinking, and interpersonal relations, our senior high school students can expect to take major subjects such as:

Additionally, since the HUMSS strand is intended for those who wish to pursue careers in social sciences, our programs will involve plenty of opportunities for students to conduct research and presentations.

The HUMSS curriculum immerses its students in different critical thinking and understanding activities in the learning process. This helps them become more socially aware of the world around them and gives them an important overview of what they will learn later in college.

The HUMSS strand is especially advantageous for senior high school students who want to receive the following benefits from their education:

This study examines the perception of Humanities and Social Science teachers among public Senior High Schools in the Department of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences strand in the Philippines. It uses Erden’s element-based model of evaluation by considering the alignment to the goals of the Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines, the purpose, and core courses of the program, and the teaching-learning process. It also uses Tyler’s Rationale as frameworks in assessing the curriculum. Likewise, the study examines the problems and difficulties in curricular implementation. Upon administering a survey to 25 Humanities and Social Science teachers among four public senior high schools, data revealed that the respondents perceived the curriculum goals, and the purpose of the program as highly observed, while the core courses of the program and teaching-learning process were satisfactorily observed in the curriculum. Also, sex and age were not factors in their level of assessment of Humanities and Social Science goals. The problems and difficulties encountered by teachers included unbalanced time allocation of learning competencies, lack of available learning materials, and lack of specialized teachers. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the government provide stronger teacher support programs to address the gap in curriculum implementation. The K to 12 program also needs a full review, as the study only provides a presurvey to more significant institutional issues. While the Humanities and Social Science curriculum appears aligned with the goals of their disciplines, and to the country’s educational goals, its realization still depends upon the teachers’ implementation in the classroom level.

Why Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) is a Practical SHS Strand

Ellexandra Lucas

Ellexandra Lucas

My strand back in high school was Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and it was the best choice I ever made. I was fortunate to have a wonderful time with my classmates, which made the last years of high school formative, enjoyable, fun, and youthful.

My Experience in the HUMSS Strand

The best way I could describe HUMSS — it feels like therapy.

In high school, the redundancy of learning Mathematics, English, and Science subjects was a good learning experience. I’ve always felt rather stale in having no identity other than acquiring them from extracurriculars, vacations, school breaks, and relationships (family, friends, and acquaintances.)

In HUMSS, I remember feeling that I finally got to discover myself. The essays, worksheets, and video projects focused on exploring the whys .

There is a stigma that the real reason why students go for HUMSS so they won’t have to do math. Maybe there is truth to that. However, we shouldn’t discredit the strand.

What are the School Requirements?

Spoiler alert! There is still math, not as much, but there is an expectation to be creative.

You can anger a professor for not answering their question introspectively. We’re talking about infographics, podcasts, videos with newscasting prompts, readings (a lot of them), analysis papers, reflection papers, documentaries, vlogging, graphic designing, thesis papers (almost every week), acting (sometimes) and APA Style will be your best friend.

Public Speaking

In high school, I was a very shy kid. Public speaking can be learned , and SHS professors do not expect you to be great at it on the first day. It’s alright to stutter and make a fool of yourself. Remember, nobody cares about the fall when you gracefully recover and that is all that matters!

Here’s a tip coming from a then-shy kid: keep volunteering! How are you going to learn without trying? There’s only one way to find out.

Everyone has different styles, you don’t have to be loud. Raising your voice is nothing if your personality doesn’t show.

For Junior High School’s Credit, They Teach Discipline

As I brought up this perspective, adults in my life concur that junior high school teaches discipline. I do think that is fair. 7:00 a.m. classes until 5:00 p.m. with rehearsals and electives are wild, now looking back.

Practicality in College

As a college student delving into the corporate field, I’ve been told plenty of times that I should have taken Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) Strand. I have zero regrets. The HUMSS jump-started me to have self-awareness.

1.) Resistance from Unwanted College Influences

In college, there are tons of influences and personalities. Character strength is the best thing I acquired from the HUMSS Strand because I understand my principles, values, and individuality to resist unwanted influence.

2.) Character Strength

During my first months of college, I was so down. It felt like everything I believed in was untrue or a distant past as if I was back to square one. You can teach yourself motivation and self-respect is hard work in the lowest of times.

3.) The Benefits of Education

We’re taught to watch the news, advocate, and be good citizens. In turn, in college, we appreciate our education more because we recognize that it is a privilege, especially, in the Philippines.

4.) Presentations

Any course in college require their students to present and this is a HUMSS’ student forte, you’re good to go!

5.) Personality

A person who upholds themselves in virtue is more respectable than the ones who base their personality on other people’s business. In college or even in the real world, people want personality. Cliche, but it’s true, be yourself!

Develop passions, discover interests, meet people, and understand yourself. HUMSS is a leeway to grasp your skillset, and you can explore them. Choose to explore them.

Top 5 Myths And Misconceptions About HUMSS

The Humanities and Social Sciences strand or HUMSS strand is one of the many interesting areas you can take in Senior High School. It focuses on the study of human behavior and society, culture, literature, politics, and other fascinating topics. But like any other strand in SHS, there are many misguided beliefs, misconceptions, or irrational fears that students might have about HUMSS. If you have heard scary stories about HUMSS strand that can make you want to back out, don’t worry! Not all of these things are true and we’re here to debunk some of these myths:

HUMSS is for people who hate math

“Nag HUMSS ka kase ayaw mo sa math ‘no?” While it is true that there isn't as much math in HUMSS compared to other strands like ABM and STEM, HUMSS subjects are also just as complex and will require hard work from its students. Ika nga, kailangan mo pa rin ng sipag at tiyaga para maging matagumpay sa strand na ito, just like in any other strand!

There is no future in HUMSS

“Wala naman trabaho sa HUMSS.” Ever heard this statement? Did you know that contrary to popular belief, careers in HUMSS can also have a high earning potential? Depending on the field you’re planning to go into, you can earn as high as PHP 400,000 per year with a job as a Technical Writer or PHP 300,000 as a Public Relations Specialist ! Just because wala ka sa engineering or business field doesn't mean the future couldn’t be as bright for HUMSS graduates. HUMSS students have the freedom to take on college courses and professions that are just as important and fulfilling. Lawyers, content strategists, psychometricians, and educators among others can be lucrative jobs too!

You have to be good at public speaking to succeed in HUMSS

Although HUMSS deals with communicating and interacting with people most of the time, it doesn't mean you have to be a master at debate and public speaking! Even HUMSS students encounter stage fright too. But since a lot of activities in HUMSS involve technical and creative writing, as well as reading discussions, you can definitely have the chance to develop important skills in public speaking which can be a very valuable skill in the future.

HUMSS students are only good at writing

"Sulat dito, sulat doon." A lot of activities in HUMSS do include writing essays, term papers, reviews, and other things of this sort. However, this doesn’t mean passing and succeeding HUMSS is an easy feat! We’ve all been required to do research tasks and write academic papers at some point in our lives so we can all agree that writing isn’t as easy as many people thought it is, right?

Having the ability to write creatively and well-written is a skill that not everyone can skillfully execute. It involves other important skills like research skills, language skills, critical thinking, and hard work to make sure your work is factual and accurate.

HUMSS subjects are easier compared to other strands

Every incoming senior high school student will certainly have to make the important decision of choosing a strand. May ibat’t ibang specialization ang bawat SHS strand at bawat isa ay makatutulng sa’yo sa paghahanda para sa kinabukasan mo. While each strand is designed for certain fields, they each have their unique set of advantages and challenges. It's not accurate nor fair to simply call one strand "easier" than the others. The question then is not about which one is easier but which strand will prepare you for the future you want.

Entering the world of HUMSS can seem overwhelming for incoming SHS students, but it takes time and facts to learn more about the strand.. With all these myths busted, we hope you now understand what the field is all about and what it’s not.
