Inspired by true events, ‘Piglady’ is an intriguing film

Piglady is a 2023 American slasher film directed by Adam Fair and written by Fair and Lyon Mitchells. The cast includes Alex C. Montgomery, Ashley Spillers, and Jessica Sonneborn.

Piglady is a slasher film that is based on the true story of Susan Monica, a woman who murdered several farmhands and fed them to her pigs . The film follows a group of friends who go on a weekend trip to a cabin in Oregon, only to discover that they are being stalked and hunted by a mysterious figure known as the Piglady.

The film is a well-made, suspenseful slasher movie that does a good job of building tension and creating a sense of dread. The performances by the cast are also solid, and the film is visually appealing. The film’s setting is well-chosen, and the filmmakers do a good job of creating a sense of isolation and fright. In fact, the scene with killings are well-choreographed and bloody, and they will satisfy fans of the slasher genre.

The film’s plot is simple but effective, however, it does have some flaws because of some predictable.

During Piglady there were some parts that stood out, starting with the clever way that Susan’s face was hidden throughout the film, by using strategic plans. In this way, viewers increase their curiosity when trying to imagine the character’s face. Another interesting point is the fact that pigs appear in most scenes throughout the film allowing viewers to create their own conclusions about their presence.

The film’s ending is ambiguous, which will leave viewers guessing about what really happened.

There are several moments that will leave you glued to the screen to try to understand the unfolding of the story. Overall, Piglady is a well-made and suspenseful slasher film that is worth a watch for fans of the genre. The movie can be found on digital platforms — buckle up!

The exploitation schlock of Piglady is boar-ing

pig lady movie review

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS.

by Jarrod Jones . In an Oregon courthouse on April 21, 2015, Susan Monica was convicted of murdering two men. Both victims had been hands on Monica’s farm, and it was there where they died; to dispose of the evidence, she dismembered their corpses and fed the pieces to her pigs. For these crimes, she’s currently serving a minimum 50-year sentence.  All of that is true!

If you squint, you can sort of see a bit of Monica’s story in Adam Ray Fair’s  Piglady . It’s a sporadically creepy movie when it aims for true-crime detail. For example, there’s a scene where the eponymous pig lady (Sandra Dee Tryon) brings on a middle-aged, drug-addicted hand named Randy (Jeffery Hunter) to help around her shambles of a pig farm. She rewards his good work by doping Randy up and then strapping him to a bed to do god knows what with him. If this depravity is meant to illuminate how broken the mind of the pig-lady killer is, I can’t say exactly. What she does makes the scene creepy, not necessarily why she does it.

pig lady movie review

Yeah,  Piglady  isn’t a pleasant watch; go figure. The scene I just described is the one moment where Fair establishes an aura of genuine unease, nudging this closer to the skeezy rural slasher I’m sure he thought he was making all along. And while I’m fine — even happy! — watching a low-budget filmmaker toy around with sleaze and torment, this isn’t a particularly riveting example of how it’s done. Once we leave the house of the piglady, Fair twists all his otherwise solid story set-up into a meandering and vague curlicue of directionless schlock. He’s on the precipice of doing something mildly interesting with the material; he just doesn’t know how to realize it.

Monica’s story might have made an engrossing, low-key thriller, but those film rights were probably expensive. Cranking out small-budget horror movies means not asking for more money than the project could potentially bring back as a return. So the Susan Monica murder saga is more of a prompt from which Fair can improvise all sorts of gross stuff. He applies only the most basic facts of the case to what is decidedly a hacky boobs-and-slaughter show — likely to avoid any possible litigation, the true hallmark of any mid-effort exploitation junk.

pig lady movie review

Piglady  follows Brittany (Alicia Karami) as she embarks on a Christmas vacation with Adrianna (Karri Davis), her boyfriend Hunter (Fair, inserting himself as a hyper-competent former Marine hunk), and Adrianna’s sidepiece, Tony (Liam Watkins). These four don’t seem to like or even tolerate each other; they bicker endlessly, only to occasionally pivot to sub-bawdy humor (“The Shocker” gets a shout), which makes you wonder what kind of melodrama will pop off in the Oregonian cabin where the rest of the movie takes place. (Apparently, Fair shot this near Monica’s actual murder farm, though I cannot tell you why.)

We find out Brittany is hiding a seemingly unwanted pregnancy from Hunter. This information feels important because Fair reveals it after a prolonged opening sequence where the piglady kills a young woman who’s just given birth on her farm. Much later, we see the baby in the piglady’s care, though why the baby is a part of this, I couldn’t say — it has nothing to do with Brittany; in fact, It doesn’t have much to do with anything. There’s also the strange inclusion of Adrianna’s vegan diet, and while you may think this character detail is designed to scrape up against Hunter’s studly plans to butcher a pig for their holiday feast, you’d only be partially right. Drama is nigh, only it ain’t.

pig lady movie review

Fair does a halfway admirable job setting up this pack of ding-dongs for the butchering to come — especially the dopey couple Adrianna and Tony, the latter of whom recites “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by reading the verses off his phone for no serious reason other than to do it. But Fair’s follow-through sucks; Adrianna’s veganism says nothing about pig farming or Hunter’s zeal for fresh-killed meat, and Brittany’s pregnancy only exists because it makes us think that’ll give her enough plot armor to become  Piglady’s  Final Girl. Through her confrontation with the killer, we might be able to divine a theme from all this chaos. That’s how most movies work, right? Not Piglady .

Not for nothing, Piglady  delivers what it sells on the poster: there is a lady who sure owns a lot of pigs. The bonus, such as it is, is watching her pets go whole hog on her victims. We never quite get a good idea of who she is (we don’t even see her face) or why she goes on this killing spree, but the Piglady is there, often seen lurking around the woods with a machete clutched in her mitts. She eventually puts her blade to work on these hapless chumps, with some extra side characters tossed in haphazardly to pump up the body count. A pizza delivery guy gets it embedded in his skull at one point. I suppose, by definition, that makes this a slasher. But “slasher” implies a semblance of well-calibrated shocks, and Fair’s execution is too mushy. I’m going to start calling these kinds of duds “slushers.”

1.5 out of 10

If this aspect were removed, then Piglady would just be a more generic albeit enjoyable horror movie. The problem is that whilst it’s fleshing out its protagonist, it falls on the cliches of the gang trapped in a cabin in the woods.

Adam Fair’s ‘Piglady’ (2023): Based On True Events – Movie Review

Tracy Allen August 17, 2023 Movie Reviews , Reviews Comments Off on Adam Fair’s ‘Piglady’ (2023): Based On True Events – Movie Review

Piglady is a 2023 slasher film from filmmakers Adam Fair and Lyon Mitchell. The film is based on true events, inspired by the Susan Monica murders that took place in Oregon in 2012 and 2013, where a woman fed her murdered farmhands to her pigs.

Inspired by true events. Filmed at the murder scene. A group of friends, while on a Christmas vacation to a cabin in Southern Oregon, learn of a rumor of an antisocial woman who allegedly murders people and feeds her victims to pigs.

Piglady was directed by Adam Fair ( Son of a Preacher 2019) from a script co-written by Fair and Producer Alex C. Johnson ( We Are Nameless 2017). Fair and Johnson also star as Hunter and Caleb Jones, respectively. Other cast members include Karri Davis ( Chasing Molly 2019), Alicia Karami ( Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood 2019), Liam Samuel Watkins ( Bigfoot vs. DB Cooper 2014), Lazarus Tate ( Stage Fright TV series), Shyvhan Storm (as Shyvhan Gonzales: Soul Ties 2022), Geno Romo ( Millionaire Man 2017), and newcomer Sandra Dee Tryon as Piglady. The film comes to us through Preacher Boys Productions.

As I mentioned above, Piglady is inspired by true events. Back in 2014, an Oregonian pig farmer named Susan Monica was found to have murdered two men—handymen who worked on her farm—and fed them to her pigs. It’s not clear if she made them a piggy breakfast to get rid of the bodies or if it was because her pigs were hungry. She did admit that the second guy, Robert Haney, was still alive when the pigs started eating him. Supposedly she shot him to put him out of his misery. She wasn’t clear how Steve Delicino actually died, but he was definitely eaten.

Susan Monica

Strangely enough, after I watched this screener, I happened upon an episode of Signs of a Psychopath where psychiatrists analyzed Monica’s video confession. She is one messed up lady. She ended up getting convicted and is now serving 2 consecutive 25-year sentences for her crimes.

In Piglady , a hulking, intimidating pig farmer living on her own is confronted with the son of the man who has been trying to buy her property and seeks revenge. The film’s plot follows said son, Hunter (Fair), an angry, gun-toting alpha male dating Brittany (Karami) who, unbeknownst to him, is actually pregnant. Along with them are Tony (Qatkins) and Adrianna (Davis), friends of Brittany’s. They’ve decided to stay at Hunter’s dad’s cabin in Oregon, but when the Piglady meets them and finds out who they are, the shit hits the fan.

pig lady movie review

What Works In Piglady

I love that Piglady took a gruesome true story and twisted it up into a slasher nightmare. Truth is often stranger than fiction, and there are so many messed up stories out there.

One interesting tidbit about this film is that it was mostly filmed on the property alongside Susan Monica’s farm. Now that’s dedication to a project. I also thought it was a good idea to show the Piglady mostly from the neck down. You never really get to see her face. She becomes this force, superhuman, that can’t be stopped. She is brutal and kills everyone—and everything—in her path. She’s violent and full of rage. What a great character.

**Trigger Warning – the dog dies**

I can’t imagine how hard it was to film pigs, but seeing them everywhere was pretty cool.

I have to mention Liam Samuel Watkins and his portrayal of Tony. He is such a natural actor and was totally believable in his role. I’m excited to see him in more things. Fair’s Hunter was an asshole in the beginning, but by the end, he was less so, and I felt like that attitude should have been continued throughout the runtime. Both Alicia Karami and Kerri Davis were great with what they had been given.

pig lady movie review

What Doesn’t Work in Piglady

I’m just going to come right out and say it… pigs aren’t scary. Especially these pigs. They didn’t chase anyone down. There weren’t any closeups of them chowing down on screaming humans, blood dripping from their snouts. They didn’t even squeal. They just lumbered around and, once in awhile, bent their heads down to eat something. It could have been anything. They were sadly underused. It would have been cool if the bodies were never found because they were eaten by the pigs and the Piglady’s guilt was never proven or something.

There’s also some pretty cringy, awkward, unneeded dialogue. So much of these conversations are just people saying words at each other to fill time. I wish there had been more about Brittany being pregnant or Adrianna being a vegan. It was mentioned often enough but nothing ever came of it.

pig lady movie review

If you’re looking for a slash happy cabin in the woods horror flick, and you just happen to be afraid of pigs, you should give Piglady a chance. The film releases on digital on August 22, 2023.

Piglady Review: A Missed Opportunity for Campy Goodness

' src=

Piglady , directed by Adam Fair, had the potential to be a gripping horror film that would keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, it falls far short of that mark. With an intriguing premise and a cast of talented actors, Piglady fails to deliver on its promise, leaving viewers with a sense of disappointment and frustration.

The film’s premise is undeniably intriguing: a group of friends embarks on a Christmas vacation to a cabin in the remote woods of Southern Oregon, only to stumble upon a chilling rumor about an antisocial woman who supposedly murders people and feeds their remains to pigs. The setup has all the elements of a classic horror movie, with the isolation of the cabin, the mysterious legend, and the impending sense of dread. However, the execution of this premise leaves much to be desired.

Piglady (2023).

One of the most significant issues with Piglady is its pacing. The film takes an agonizingly long time to build tension and establish a sense of unease. The first half of the movie is filled with endless scenes of the friends engaging in banal conversations and mundane activities, which does little to further the plot or develop the characters. It’s only in the second half that the film begins to pick up, but by then, it’s too late to salvage the viewer’s interest.

The characters themselves are underdeveloped and lack depth. Alicia Karami as Brittany, the film’s supposed protagonist, fails to elicit much empathy or interest from the audience. Her character’s actions and decisions are often baffling and lack motivation, making it challenging to connect with her plight. The other friends, played by Karri Davis , Jeffery Hunter , and Alex C. Johnson , are equally one-dimensional, serving as little more than cannon fodder for the impending horror. There is a lack of character development and chemistry among the group, making it difficult to care about their fates.

Sandra Dee Tyron ‘s portrayal of Piglady, the enigmatic and potentially terrifying antagonist, also falls short. Her character is shrouded in mystery for most of the film, and when her true nature is finally revealed, it lacks the impact and terror that one would expect from a horror movie. Tyron’s performance is underwhelming, and her character’s motivations and backstory remain frustratingly unexplored.

The cinematography in Piglady is serviceable but unremarkable. The film makes good use of its remote forest setting, creating a sense of isolation and foreboding. However, the cinematography fails to capitalize on the potential for atmospheric and suspenseful shots. The film’s visuals lack the artistry and creativity that could have elevated the overall experience.

One of the most disappointing aspects of Piglady is its handling of the central horror elements. The film relies heavily on jump scares, which become repetitive and predictable. The moments of tension and terror lack subtlety and are often accompanied by loud, jarring music that further diminishes their impact. The film’s attempts to build suspense through the legend of Piglady are ham-fisted, and the payoff is ultimately unsatisfying.

Piglady (2023).

The script of Piglady is another major flaw. The dialogue is often stilted and unrealistic, with characters delivering clunky exposition that feels forced. There are numerous instances of characters making irrational decisions that defy logic, and the plot is riddled with inconsistencies and plot holes. The film’s attempts at humor also fall flat, detracting from the overall tone of suspense and horror.

The film’s climax is chaotic and confusing, leaving many questions unanswered and failing to provide a satisfying resolution to the story. It feels rushed and hastily put together, as if the filmmakers were more interested in reaching the conclusion than in crafting a coherent and satisfying ending.

Piglady is a missed opportunity for campy horror goodness. Despite its intriguing premise and a cast of talented actors, the film is marred by pacing issues, underdeveloped characters, lackluster performances, uninspired cinematography, and a poorly executed script. It fails to deliver on the promise of a suspenseful and terrifying horror experience, leaving viewers disappointed and frustrated. While it may have its moments of tension, they are few and far between, and the film ultimately falls short of being a memorable addition to the horror genre. For those seeking a truly chilling and satisfying horror movie, Piglady is not the answer.

Review: Sara Porkalob sings her truth in dangerous ‘Dragon Lady’ at Geffen Playhouse

A woman stands, arms upraised, on a red-lighted stage under a frame invoking a red snake

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Three generations of women are assembled in Sara Porkalob’s “Dragon Lady,” the first in her three-part series of musicals about what she refers to as her “Filipina American gangster family.” She’s not exaggerating. When baby Maria comes crying home after being bullied by a neighbor, her mother hands her a golf club and tells her to go back over there and kill the kid.

She’s not kidding, either.

The show, which opened Thursday at the Geffen Playhouse’s Gil Cates Theater under the direction of Andrew Russell, takes place on Maria Porkalob Senior’s 60th birthday. She and her daughter Maria have had a strained relationship predating even the golf club incident. Feeling unfairly judged as she approaches her golden years, Maria Sr. decides to share episodes of her harrowing life with her granddaughter Sara. What follows are scenes out of a movie melodrama — helpless poverty, horrific exploitation, routine brushes with violence and near-death escapes — performed under the guise of a karaoke cabaret.

Sara Porkalob stands on a staircase next to an upright piano, her head tilted

Sara Porkalob starred in the 2022 Broadway revival of “1776,” directed by Jeffrey L. Page and Diane Paulus and featuring a multiracial cast made up entirely of female, transgender and nonbinary actors. The production was meant to view the musical through a 21st century, post- “Hamilton” lens, but Porkalob caused a stir in theater circles when she openly critiqued the handling of race and gender both in the rehearsal process and in the show itself.

That uncensored fearlessness, while not always appreciated in a team setting, is a valuable attribute in an artist creating her own material. Porkalob isn’t beholden to anything but her pursuit of the truth, which can be a dangerous game when delving into a family story marked by intergenerational trauma.

“Dragon Lady” moves back in time from the state of Washington to the Philippines, where we find Maria Sr. as a young girl, trying to survive the brutal murder of her father by a notorious gang. Working in the Red Dragon, a Manila nightclub owned by gangsters, Maria starts off as a cleaner, but as she matures into an attractive young woman she is promoted to singer. Promoted is a dubious choice of words, because the entertainers at the Red Dragon are expected to do whatever it takes to satisfy the customers.

Before she even knows what love is, Maria is swept off the stage by the boss of a ruling gang and impregnated. The story of her fight to keep her first daughter, whom she names Maria Elena, after herself, “her bittersweet joy,” represents the climax of the first half of “Dragon Lady.” Maria Sr., in many ways still a child herself, sings to her daughter, “I wish I could tell you that you are no child of pain / But you have my blood in your veins … / And trouble’s a family trait,” a haunting refrain that echoes turbulently throughout the generations.

Sara Porkalob onstage, her hands clasped in front of her

The second half of “Dragon Lady” tells baby Maria’s side of the story. She’s 13 years old when we encounter her back in Washington, after Maria Sr. has moved to the U.S. with an American Navy man who fell under her spell at the nightclub. He married her and gave her his last name, but this marital lifeline doesn’t have enough elasticity to withstand Maria Sr.’s past. As the eldest child, young Maria has no choice but to take over the childcare duties of her four younger siblings as her mother desperately tries to earn a living while simultaneously doing everything in her power to attract a new breadwinner for her family.

Porkalob is a vivid actor, but the dizzying array of squeaky children in the second half can make it hard to keep the story straight. Even so, the general picture of a mother’s absence and a daughter’s understandable resentment at having had to pick up the maternal slack in penurious conditions comes through loud and clear. At times there isn’t a single jar of baby food in the house, forcing Maria’s siblings to go out and beg for food donations. This scene seems plucked out of Charles Dickens, but we’re in the Pacific Northwest with a Filipino family and far removed from Victorian consciousness.

Porkalob doesn’t take sides in the conflict between her grandmother and mother. She gives both women their due, providing sufficient context to prevent us from jumping to judgment too quickly. There’s a mischievous element to Porkalob’s storytelling morality that is a direct result of Maria Sr.’s presence. Firing up her jukebox karaoke machine, this newly turned 60-year-old raps by way of introduction, “But I ain’t never killed a man that didn’t deserve it.” Words that we will see come true — at least if we are to credit her account, something her first-born daughter is less apt to do.

Sara Porkalob sings onstage in "Dragon Lady" at the Geffen Playhouse.

“Dragon Lady” works best as a one-person musical. Porkalob shares the stage with three extraordinary musicians (Pete Irving, Jimmy Austin and Mickey Stylin) who largely appear in the shadows of an inset space on the fabulous, garish red nightclub set by Randy Wong-Westbrooke. But she performs all the characters herself, and when she launches into song with her exquisite voice, moving from a range of high bell-like clarity to dusky lowdown in both original material by Irving and tweaked standards, the show is most fully alive.

When “Dragon Lady” becomes more of a conventional solo piece after intermission, a showcase for Porkalob to flex her versatility as an actor, the effect isn’t quite as powerful. One of the issues is that the tale being spun raises more plot questions than can be answered in the allotted time. Details and consequences are breezed over or ignored entirely, making “Dragon Lady” seem sketchy in places. When Porkalob is singing, however, the audience is too rapt to worry about a full narrative accounting.

Part 1 of the Dragon Cycle may not have found its ideal balance between music and drama, but Porkalob leaves a potent theatrical impression. Her family’s immigrant story must be exceedingly painful to relive, but it’s also clearly empowering. And not only for her but also for theatergoers who might feel that their own unsanitized histories couldn’t stand scrutiny on a public stage. “Dragon Lady” gives permission for the marginalized and the morally messy to belt out their complicated truths.
