Valentine's Day is almost here! Whether you celebrate with a box of chocolates, candy hearts, flowers, or nothing at all, you can hone your writing skills with one of our fun Valentine's Day writing prompts. Give one a try! 

Valentine's Day has a complicated history depending on who you ask. It's been called a celebration of a martyr, a festival heralding a coming spring, and a holiday for lovers. 

But you don't have to frame it as a romantic holiday to have fun with one of the writing activities below. 

Valentine's Day Writing Prompts

1. Describe a perfect gift and what makes it perfect for you. (Bonus if you can describe the perfect gift for someone else too!)

2. If you could throw an amazing Valentine's Day party, who would you invite and what would you do?

3. Write about a happy memory from a past Valentine's Day. 

4. Imagine you're in a long-distance relationship. How could you celebrate together from far away? 

5. If you owned a neighborhood flower shop, what top three flowers would you specialize in and why?

6. Imagine you opened a counter where people could exchange their bad gifts. Write a story of one such exchange. 

7. If you could celebrate Valentine's Day with one famous person (or one special person), who would it be and why? 

8. Write cards to people in your life who have helped you recently or just because you're thinking of them. 

9. What is your favorite music to listen to when you've suffered a broken heart and why? 

10. Imagine you find your perfect partner only to realize they aren't what they seem. What happens?

11. Write about your favorite holiday treats: a box of chocolates, conversation hearts, a piece of chocolate cake, creme brûlée, whatever you love. 

12. What are the non-negotiable in any romantic relationship? Why are those qualities so important?

13. Imagine you're handed six paper hearts and you can only write one word on each to tell a friend how much you appreciate them. What do you write?

14. What is the most beautiful gift you've ever received that could not be bought in a store? 

Bonus: Write a fictional history of Valentine's Day, including how it should be commemorated now.

How to Write a Narrative Essay | Example & Tips

A narrative essay tells a story. In most cases, this is a story about a personal experience you had. This type of essay , along with the descriptive essay , allows you to get personal and creative, unlike most academic writing .

When assigned a narrative essay, you might find yourself wondering: Why does my teacher want to hear this story? Topics for narrative essays can range from the important to the trivial. Usually the point is not so much the story itself, but the way you tell it.

A narrative essay is a way of testing your ability to tell a story in a clear and interesting way. You’re expected to think about where your story begins and ends, and how to convey it with eye-catching language and a satisfying pace.

These skills are quite different from those needed for formal academic writing. For instance, in a narrative essay the use of the first person (“I”) is encouraged, as is the use of figurative language, dialogue, and suspense.

Narrative essay assignments vary widely in the amount of direction you’re given about your topic. You may be assigned quite a specific topic or choice of topics to work with.

• Write a story about your first day of school.
• Write a story about your favorite holiday destination.

You may also be given prompts that leave you a much wider choice of topic.

• Write about an experience where you learned something about yourself.
• Write about an achievement you are proud of. What did you accomplish, and how?

In these cases, you might have to think harder to decide what story you want to tell. The best kind of story for a narrative essay is one you can use to talk about a particular theme or lesson, or that takes a surprising turn somewhere along the way.

For example, a trip where everything went according to plan makes for a less interesting story than one where something unexpected happened that you then had to respond to. Choose an experience that might surprise the reader or teach them something.

Narrative essays in college applications

When applying for college , you might be asked to write a narrative essay that expresses something about your personal qualities.

For example, this application prompt from Common App requires you to respond with a narrative essay.

In this context, choose a story that is not only interesting but also expresses the qualities the prompt is looking for—here, resilience and the ability to learn from failure—and frame the story in a way that emphasizes these qualities.

An example of a short narrative essay, responding to the prompt “Write about an experience where you learned something about yourself,” is shown below.

Since elementary school, I have always favored subjects like science and math over the humanities. My instinct was always to think of these subjects as more solid and serious than classes like English. If there was no right answer, I thought, why bother? But recently I had an experience that taught me my academic interests are more flexible than I had thought: I took my first philosophy class.

Before I entered the classroom, I was skeptical. I waited outside with the other students and wondered what exactly philosophy would involve—I really had no idea. I imagined something pretty abstract: long, stilted conversations pondering the meaning of life. But what I got was something quite different.

A young man in jeans, Mr. Jones—“but you can call me Rob”—was far from the white-haired, buttoned-up old man I had half-expected. And rather than pulling us into pedantic arguments about obscure philosophical points, Rob engaged us on our level. To talk free will, we looked at our own choices. To talk ethics, we looked at dilemmas we had faced ourselves. By the end of class, I’d discovered that questions with no right answer can turn out to be the most interesting ones.

The experience has taught me to look at things a little more “philosophically”—and not just because it was a philosophy class! I learned that if I let go of my preconceptions, I can actually get a lot out of subjects I was previously dismissive of. The class taught me—in more ways than one—to look at things with an open mind.

If you’re not given much guidance on what your narrative essay should be about, consider the context and scope of the assignment. What kind of story is relevant, interesting, and possible to tell within the word count?

The best kind of story for a narrative essay is one you can use to reflect on a particular theme or lesson, or that takes a surprising turn somewhere along the way.

Don’t worry too much if your topic seems unoriginal. The point of a narrative essay is how you tell the story and the point you make with it, not the subject of the story itself.

Narrative essays are usually assigned as writing exercises at high school or in university composition classes. They may also form part of a university application.

When you are prompted to tell a story about your own life or experiences, a narrative essay is usually the right response.

The key difference is that a narrative essay is designed to tell a complete story, while a descriptive essay is meant to convey an intense description of a particular place, object, or concept.

Narrative and descriptive essays both allow you to write more personally and creatively than other kinds of essays , and similar writing skills can apply to both.

What is Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is a holiday when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. It is also called St. Valentine’s Day. The holiday has expanded to express affection between relatives and friends.

Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine , Valentine’s Day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the Roman emperor Claudius II Gothicus . Other accounts hold that it was St. Valentine of Terni , a bishop, for whom the holiday was named, though it is possible that the two saints were actually one person.

Valentine’s Day is popular in the United States as well as in Britain , Canada , and Australia , and it is also celebrated in other countries, including Argentina , France , Mexico , and South Korea . In the Philippines , it is the most common wedding anniversary.

Valentine’s Day is commonly celebrated by exchanging handmade or store-bought “Valentines” ( greeting cards ) or other tokens of affection like chocolates and flowers. In many schools, it has become customary for young students to bring in Valentines to swap with classmates. Traditions of the holiday’s observance can vary with the country. Learn more.

Valentine’s Day , holiday (February 14) when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. Given their similarities, it has been suggested that the holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia , held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I forbid the celebration of Lupercalia and is sometimes attributed with replacing it with St. Valentine’s Day, but the true origin of the holiday is vague at best. Valentine’s Day did not come to be celebrated as a day of romance until about the 14th century.

Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, the day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 ce by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus . According to legend , the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed from blindness. Other accounts hold that it was St. Valentine of Terni , a bishop , for whom the holiday was named, though it is possible the two saints were actually one person. Another common legend states that St. Valentine defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war. It is for this reason that his feast day is associated with love .

Formal messages, or valentines , appeared in the 1500s, and by the late 1700s commercially printed cards were being used. The first commercial valentines in the United States were printed in the mid-1800s. Valentines commonly depict Cupid , the Roman god of love, along with hearts, traditionally the seat of emotion. Because it was thought that the avian mating season begins in mid-February, birds also became a symbol of the day. Traditional gifts include candy and flowers , particularly red roses , a symbol of beauty and love.

The day is popular in the United States as well as in Britain , Canada , and Australia , and it is also celebrated in other countries, including Argentina , France , Mexico , and South Korea . In the Philippines it is the most common wedding anniversary, and mass weddings of hundreds of couples are not uncommon on that date. The holiday has expanded to expressions of affection among relatives and friends. Many schoolchildren exchange valentines with one another on this day.

Valentine’s Day in ELA: Ideas for Reading and Writing ALL February

I’ve written blog posts about the importance of setting a good feeling tone in the classroom , making learning fun , and affective learning (find out why it’s the most effective learning of all). This post goes right along with that notion that you can deliberately advance students’ learning just by making them feel good and relaxed.

Valentine’s Day, and all February for that matter, is one more opportunity to focus on the positives such as kindness and love, while engaging students’ emotions and having fun! So, here are some reading, writing, and language ideas for a Valentine’s Day in ELA you’ll love.

Here are some ideas for Valentine’s Day in ELA:

1) Express love or appreciation in an Ode: According to the dictionary, an “ode” is “a lyric poem in the form of an address to a particular subject, often elevated in style or manner and written in varied or irregular meter – a poem meant to be sung.”

And, according to poets.org , an ode was “originally accompanied by music and dance, and later reserved by the Romantic poets to convey their strongest sentiments—is a formal address to an event, a person, or a thing not present.” Wow, who knew? (I didn’t.)

I recommend keeping it simple and just having students write freely with a simple abab or abca rhyme scheme…but I also found this great lesson online that looks very helpful for both teachers and students writing odes.

So, have students brainstorm all the things and/or people and pets they love and appreciate. Ask some leading questions, such as  What’s your favorite thing to do after school? or What food or drinks do you LOVE? or  Who do you love like a sister? or  Who shows you love?

2) Shower with Compliments: I got this idea from “The Cult of Pedagogy,” a TPT seller who has inspired me. She says students take turns of about 10-15 minutes each being in the “hot seat” while their classmates write compliments on the board behind them. She says you have to see it to appreciate its full impact. What a great idea. I’m thinking the teacher needs a turn too!

3) Sticky Note Love: I have a friend (a mother of 5) who covers her kids’ doors with sticky notes that show what she loves about that kid – on or around Valentine’s Day (or maybe it’s birthdays…). Anyway, I’m sure this can somehow be incorporated into Language Arts. For example, instruct students to write 10 adjectives (one word each) to express what they love about a person, thing, whatever…

4) Idioms about the heart and love: My heart really goes out to you …especially if you have teenagers acting head over heels in love or who have just gotten their hearts broken …One of my blog posts lists 20 idioms about love and the heart . It gets students thinking why the heart is associated with love anyway. These are fun to read, to incorporate into writing, or to research their origins. It also links to a free printable that gets students to write literal meanings in a language activity.

5) ELA Science Fusion “Your Cardiovascular System” ( Mini-Unit or Lite version text only): Relevant, interesting, engaging scientific and technical informational text and literacy in science activities for English Language Arts or science class or both. Thoroughly researched, highly visual, creative and fun ELA connections, extension activities, vocabulary building, a song to sing along to (a song I LOVED as a kid whenever teachers would show us the video), fascinating informational text all about how our circulatory system works.

6) Shakespeare in Love: I found a GREAT post about 20 of Shakespeare’s quotes about love that tells all about the context they are set in and their meaning. I also found this list of 55 of Shakespeare’s most famous love quotes . And here is a list of his sonnets. How about have students each choose a different sonnet and quote to analyze? They can identify: mood, speaker, tone, imagery, metaphor, rhyme scheme, etc.

7) Write a Love Letter to a Book or Author: Have you ever seen that skit on the Tonight Show in which Jimmy Fallon writes “thank you notes” to random things? It cracks me up. So this is like that, sort of. Have students write to a book or author showering them with love and specific compliments.

8) The History of Valentine’s Day: As simple of a concept that Valentine’s Day is, it turns out the history is ancient, not fully documented (and full of hearsay), yet is quite interesting (like how greeting cards came about) and even contends that Valentine’s Day was meant to replace a festival we would call “inappropriate” these days. I wrote the text for grades 6 and up to explore these concepts. They’re not really well suited to younger elementary kids.

Paragraph on Valentine’s Day

Each year on 14 th February, Valentine’s Day is celebrated as the day for expressing love towards our near-dear ones. In the memory of ‘Saint Valentine’, Valentine’s Day is celebrated. For a better understanding of readers, we have created some important paragraphs elaborating on the history, origin, celebration and other important facts about Valentine’s Day. Kindly go through it.

Short and Long Paragraphs on Valentine’s Day

Paragraph 1 – 100 words.

Valentine’s Day is said as the day for showing love, affection, and care towards our loved ones. It is universally accepted as the day for expressing love. On this day people exchange cards, gifts, flowers and other symbols for telling their feelings to their loved ones. On 14th February of every year, Valentine’s Day is celebrated.

Love is an eternal feeling and for celebrating this feeling Valentine’s Day is made. The spring season falls in the month of February; it brings joy to every face. The mixture of fresh spring breeze with love refills the joy of celebrating Valentine’s Day with zeal. In the contemporary world, the week before the 14th of February is called ‘Valentine’s Week’.

Paragraph 2 – 120 Words

Valentine’s Day is the joy of conveying love and affection to lovers and all our near-dear ones. In the 3rd Century in Rome, there was a catholic saint named ‘Saint Valentine’. He was blamed to arrange secret marriages for Roman soldiers and he was also blamed for converting them into Christianity.

One day Emperor Claudius-II (King of Roman Empire) find saint’s act and imprisoned him. He sentenced death to St. Valentine. During his imprisonment period, Saint Valentine fell in love with the jailor’s blind daughter. Some sources say that he cured her blindness by his selfless love towards her. On 14th February, 270 AD Saint hanged to death and before that he wrote a letter to jailor’s daughter.

He mentioned his identity as ‘Yours Valentine’ in the letter. This salutation became famous and in the loving memory of saint’s love and his noble acts, universally 14th February was declared as ‘Valentine’s Day’.

Paragraph 3 – 150 Words

Valentine’s Day can be said as a symbol of love. The bond between two people is celebrated on this day. On the eve of Valentine’s Day people represent cards, chocolates, and flowers to their loved ones.

The week before 14th February is celebrated as Valentine Week. Each day carries its specialty. The days are sequenced by Rose Day, Propose Day, Chocolate Day, Teddy Day, Kiss Day and Hug Day. These days are also a source of inspiration for poets and authors.

Various love quotes depict the glory of love, bonding and eternal peace drawn out of love. Valentine’s Day is also bliss for commercial purposes. Millions of Love Cards sell each year on the occasion of Valentine’s Day.

The love Cards are taken as a medium for bringing joy on the faces. The trend of presenting cards is quite old. In the 18th century in England, the custom of gifting on Valentine’s Day became quite popular. People, in those days, started representing cards and chocolates to their loved ones.

Paragraph 4 – 200 Words

Valentine’s Day tells the bonding and emotions one feels about their lovers, partners, and their loved ones. Let’s have look at some important and interesting facts on Valentine’s Day:

• In the United States, billions of Valentine’s Day Cards sold yearly.
• The trend of presenting chocolates to their loved ones leads to the high demand for chocolates in Valentine’s week.
• On 14 th February 1800, Richard Cadbury introduced chocolates to the world.
• There are various varieties of chocolates especially made for Valentine’s Day.
• Heart-Shaped Chocolates are considered as the symbol of love and generally, it’s purchased on Chocolate Day.
• In Finland, Valentine’s Day is celebrated as ‘Friendship Day’.
• Valentine’s Day is mostly celebrated in Christian Countries.
• There is no official holiday declared by the government on this day but people celebrate it by arranging meals with their loved ones.
• In India, few communities are totally against the concept of Valentine’s Day they considered as a way to westernization.
• But the celebration of Valentine’s Day in India is becoming popular day by day.
• In a survey it is found that gift shops, flower shops are making good business in the season of love.

But Valentine’s Day is made for remembering the togetherness and attachments to our loved ones. Valentines’ Day is followed by Valentines’ Week and it is the grand fest based on the human emotion called love.

Like other fests, Valentine’s Day is also carrying a special history. Commonly, it is known as the day in the memory of Saint Valentine. But some sources say that there were many Bishops in Rome who tried to spread love.

In ancient Greece, The mild winter season was celebrated as Valentine’s Day. According to their mythology, this day was considered as the day when God Zeus married to Goddess Hera. Various mythological facts depict different stories upon the origin of Valentine’s Day. Legacy of the fest says that every year zillions of wedding proposals are asked on 14, February.

It is observed that 75% of men purchase Valentine’s Day Card in comparison to women. Valentine’s Day is quite famous in Christian based countries. Around the globe, this fest is quite popular in America, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Argentina, the Philippines, etc. In the Philippines, mass weddings are organized on this day.

This occasion rejuvenates their bonding. The concept of gifting roses and chocolates is scientifically related to the heart. These mediums of expressing love are considered as the best medium to represent their loving ones. There are various Valentine’s Day celebration ideas:

The Essence of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is usually celebrated every 14th of February. On this day, expensive gifts are exchanged. Expensive dates are set. It is a great and memorable day for lovers.

Valentine’s Day is a day for loving. Loving means sharing. Valentine’s Day is a day for sharing our care with our loved ones, friends, enemies or foes. God’s lowest brethren and others. It is not necessary that we spend a big amount of money to show that we care.

To our loved ones, little meaningful deeds done for them will surely be appreciated. The appreciation may not be spontaneous, but sooner or later, it will be acknowledged with thanks.

If we always solve their problems, we are not sharing our care with our beloved and friends. We are only making them dependents on us. The proper thing to do is to help them solve their own problems. The amount of help extended should be diminished gradually until they will be able to solve their own problems independently with intelligence. Let us not give them “fish” but instead let us teach them “how to fish.” Giving them “fish” will only give them temporary relief of their problems; but helping them “how to fish” will have greater impact on their economic uplift and personal satisfaction.

Our enemies or foes deserve to share our care and love. Directly or indirectly; they have helped us to improve ourselves. Through them, we are able to find some of our faults (although many of us will not accept that these are really faults). Loving our enemies is a difficult task to do or even think of it. To many, it is only lip-service. Loving our foes will improve our relationship with them. For every unkind word or misdeed, let us reciprocate with a kind word or even a good deed. If we love our enemies, we are loving our neighbors, thereby, we are following one of the commandments of God.

Who are God’s lowest brethren? God’s lowest brethren are those who are very poor economically, those who are physically and psychologically handicapped and those who are afflicted with dreadful diseases. The least that they want from us is pity. Pitying them will only make them realize that they are outcasts. They may even curse God for their present state. They need special care, understanding, patience and assistance in some manner. Generally, they would rather accepted just like the others. We should be generous with our patience in dealing with them, so that they may be able to help or even improve their present state. Those who show their care to God’s lowest brethren love Him.

The “others” are those who are not your loved ones, friends, enemies or God’s lowest brethren. They are also God’s creatures. They need also our attention and help.

Sharing our care with our beloved, friends, foes, God’s lowest brethren and others means that we are also loving ourselves. We intend to improve our self-being, if we care for them. We are not only making them happy, but most of all, we are making the Supreme Creator happy. Love is not necessarily expressed in oral or written speech but more so in action.

Valentine’s Day should not only be celebrated once a year. The day should not be devoted only to our beloved and special friends. The essence of this day should be practiced everyday, now and forever. Let us make everyday a Valentine’s Day.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day in the Classroom

Celebrating Valentine’s Day in the classroom can be fun and simple. Valentine’s Day is a holiday that lends itself to the themes of friendship and kindness.

Complement Hearts

A simple way to bring some of the love into your classroom is to have your students create complement hearts for their classmates.  For this activity have each student write their name at the top of a blank paper and leave it on their desk.  Students will take turns moving around the room to write a unique complement for each classmate.  You could tie it into the curriculum.  For example, if you are learning about adjectives each student could use a kind adjective to describe their classmate.  After this step collect the papers and review the responses. 

If you have access to a computer lab your students can go to  https://wordart.com/create and choose a heart shape then type their classmate responses into the word column.  Be creative!  Then print out the final designs, cut out the hearts, and put them on display for a quick and easy bulletin board that is perfect for February!

Celebrating Valentine’s Day with Letters of Kindness

February is the month of kindness. Focus on being kind by writing kind letters to classmates. These letters can be tied to the curriculum by focusing on friendly letter writing skills. The teacher can assign students in pairs to write letters to each other. The focus of the letter can be as simple as what makes the person special or unique.

Random Acts of Kindness

Bring the kindness school-wide by having your class complete random acts of kindness in the school community. Create a bulletin board with acts of kindness that your class can complete as they go about their day. You can have your students brainstorm additional ideas to add to the list.
