Technology has changed the way we live our lives in so many ways, including the way we work. No longer are the days where we have to fight traffic every day to get to work, spend all day in an office space we loathe and fight more traffic just to get home.

Making a living from the comfort of your own home has never been more convenient. Some employers even prefer it. You may have seen the terms flex, remote, or home-based jobs on your job search, and they all mean the same thing: working from home. There are many remote jobs for teachers and I have found ten different jobs that are a great alternative for teachers who want to work remotely.

The following list of second careers for teachers can be done remotely from home. This is a great way to begin your transition from the classroom – especially if you are currently teaching with your district. A second job or side hustle is a great way to fluff up your resume and show off your versatility. 10 Second Careers for Teachers

1. educational consultant.

An education consultant combines their teaching skills with their administrative skills to provide qualitative advice on school policies and procedures. This is a wonderful option for a second career for teachers. Education consultants can also serve as advisors on textbook projects, government agencies, non-profit think tanks and so on. Typically, Education Consultants require a master’s degree, Ph.D., Ed.D., or J.D.

You can even get additional certifications through the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) or the American Institute for Certified Educational Planners . If you have good analytical skills, are great at organizing and planning, and have a background in curriculum building, then getting an education consultant job could be right career move for you.

2. Educational Companies Hire Teachers to Blog – Second Career or Side Hustle?

If you haven’t noticed by now, niche-based blogs are everywhere. Surprise! You are reading one right now. An established blog in a popular area of interest can generate thousands of dollars a month in reliable income. One of the biggest reasons than many teachers are drawn to blogging is that many successful blogs, at their core, are built to educate and innovate.

Companies or bloggers may be hiring for contributors or ghost writers. Working with an established company or blog is a great way to learn the ropes of blogging, making this side hustle a for teachers that could easily turn into a second career.

If you love to write and have the determination to be your own boss, blogging is perfect for you. However, this job doesn’t come without a lot of hard work, including making your own schedule, content ideas and workload. Delegation skills are essential for building a blog that earns a full-time income. Teachers have a ton of potential popular niches to explore. Some can be children’s art and crafts, classroom resources, early childhood resources, and study resources for high school students.

3. Curriculum Writer

Curriculum writers are tasked with researching and developing lessons, including resource materials and learning activities. Your work will contribute to the structure or educational and instructional programs for lower, middle and higher education. A second career in curriculum writing can easily translate into various opportunities for teachers outside of the classroom. This can include companies, organizations, and government agencies. If you have a knack for writing outlines and technical writing, as well as supreme time management and organizational skills, then you may be able to easily transition into curriculum writing.

4. Second Career as a Virtual Teacher

Often referred to as remote, distance or online teaching, virtual teachers can teach at every level of education and would make a great second career choice for teachers. This can range from kindergarten all through high school, as well as college and continuing education courses. This personal approach to teaching is a great opportunity to reach students and teachers who don?t necessarily fit into the traditional brick-and-mortar schoolhouse.

The skills you’ll need for teaching online you more than likely already have. But, brushing up on the latest in online technology will definitely help. Companies that need online teachers include K12 , Waterford , and Edmentum .

5. Virtual Tutor

A virtual tutor is much like a virtual teacher, accept more flexibility in schedule and clientele. If you are more of an entrepreneurial type of person and want to be more specialized in one or two subjects, then this job could be great for you.

Instead of a classroom of 30 students, teachers can choose who and when you want to teach in this second career. This is often on a one-on-one basis. In the digital age, it’s even easier to market your small business and to spread the word that you are a teacher for hire. Websites such as Care.com and Tutors.com can help you find steady work. Your own social media network can often be a valuable resource as well.

6. Online Professor

With more online colleges and brick and mortar institutions offering courses online, the demand for online professors is on the rise. Teaching online is great for non-tenured professors in higher education either on-campus or completely remote for two-year and four-year colleges. To be an online professor, you’ll need to know how to design course curriculum, lecture, administer tests and assignments, and grade coursework. Sometimes online instructors can parlay their skill into a corporate training position and the salaries tend to be higher.

7. Freelance Career for Teachers Writer

If you want to be start your own business in teaching and you love to write, freelance writing can be a fascinating career. You can take the jobs that appeal to you and your writing style. Plus, you have the freedom to write articles, blogs, email sequences, white papers, etc. The list goes on and on. There is no limit to the type of work you can do as a freelance writer. Since teaching has been a big part of your life, you can focus on education as your topic of choice.

8. Instructional Designer

Instructional designers are tasked with planning, organizing, testing and ensuring the functionality of various learning materials. For teachers with an eye for design and creativity, instructional design can be an exciting next step. Instructional designers utilize their knowledge of digital media and design to create learning systems and materials that informative and accessible. To be an instructional designer, you’ll need the ability to create assessments (quizzes, tests, essay prompts). Also, knowledge of how to analyze and apply trends in a learning environment is important. Some positions may require a master?s degree.

9. Customer Success Manager

I bet you are wondering what is a customer success manager? Better yet, what does one do? A customer success manager’s role is to ensure satisfaction throughout the customer’s experience. Three key responsibilities for a customer success manager are understanding the customer’s needs, fully explain the return on investment for the customer, and good account management. In addition, a candidate for this position should have great project management skills, good emotional intelligence skills to handle various scenarios, and be able to understand and improve processes.

10. Web Developer

The organizational skills you’ve gained as an educator will serve you well as you transition into a career as a web developer. As a web developer, you can work anywhere you want, as long as you have access to a computer. There are no limits to the flexibility provided by working on creating front-end web pages or the back-end systems that make up the internet.

You’ll need to understand the basic and complex coding languages. This can be learned in online classes or a course at your local college. You’ll also need to tap into your love of learning, so you can stay ahead of the curve on the constantly evolving internet. Like with any skill that you want to hone, learning to code takes a lot of practice and studying. Find your specialization first, then learn the coding languages.

How To Find the Best Remote Teaching Jobs

When COVID-19 shut down schools a couple of years ago, teachers everywhere were suddenly thrust into online teaching. It was an extremely difficult time for teachers, and many were glad to return to physical classrooms when they could. Others, though, found that they really loved teaching online. For some folks, remote teaching jobs are actually a much better fit. If you’re on the hunt for one of these positions, here are some places to start.

Virtual Schools

Virtual schools have actually been around since long before the pandemic, although only privately in some locations. Now, many states offer free virtual schooling for K-12, and they need teachers to fill the online classrooms. In most cases, you’ll need to live in the state that provides the online school, for certification and testing purposes. There are also many private virtual school companies out there, which sometimes offer better pay rates than public virtual schools.

Finding Virtual School Remote Teaching Jobs

To find public school remote teaching jobs in your state, do a web search to find out if they offer virtual school and have any openings. You can also check into the companies that run these schools, both public and private. Here are some to try.

• Stride K12 : This company runs virtual schools in multiple states and has lots of openings for full- and part-time online teachers. Teachers report that the pay is as good or better than local districts, and benefits and retirement are provided too.
• Connections Academy: This is another popular choice for public school districts, with many open positions.

ESL Online Teaching

Some of the most popular remote teaching jobs are the ones teaching English as a second language. You can work for companies that have their own curricula to follow, or register to do one-on-one or small class discussion practice. These jobs can be ideal if you’re looking to work part-time, but note that many of them require you to work odd hours to line up with daytime across the world.

The cons are the hours themselves: they are early mornings or late nights so it can be tough if you have a full-time day job. Finding ESL Remote Teaching Jobs

There are multiple companies offering these jobs, and it might be worth applying to a few and trying them out to see which fit your needs best. The website Online English Teaching is chock-full of information for those interested in these types of jobs, and it is a terrific place to start.

Note: As of 2022, many of the companies that work exclusively with Chinese students are not currently hiring new teachers. ( This is due to changes China has made in their laws. ) Others have cut their hiring dramatically but are still accepting applications. This is subject to change at any time.

• VIPKid : In this full-immersion one-on-one program for kids 4 to 12 in China, teachers use a predesigned program and don’t need to speak any language but English. See our full review of the VIPKid teacher experience here.
• Qkids : Similar to VIPKid, teachers use a preset curriculum to teach classes to small groups of up to four Chinese students. Qkids handles all the administrative stuff, including parent communication, so your time is focused on teaching. See our full review of Qkids here.
• iTalki : This site offers the chance to teach and learn a wide variety of languages, including English. Professional teachers must provide proof of certification, then can set their own rates and curriculum.

Online Tutor

Tutoring is a lot like teaching, but in a more personalized setting. If you love getting close to your students and focusing on the subjects you know best, this might be for you. There are lots of online tutoring sites available, especially for test prep. You can also strike out on your own, building up clients in a way that fits your schedule.

Elevate K-12 is an Ed Tech company based out of Chicago. Our mission is to make high-quality instruction available to all students regardless of zip code.

All teaching is live and synchronous. The students are in a brick and mortar classroom setting and our teacher is live-streamed on a big screen at the front of the classroom. Students are also able to see their teacher on their own individual device.

Students are in regular school buildings throughout the US and we have programs in over 30 states from coast to coast.

The classroom coach is a paraprofessional/teaching assistant. They are with your students in person throughout the entire class period. Think of the classroom coach as your right hand – they help students with technology issues, class transitions, passing out handouts.

We cannot hire teachers with expired licenses for our certified teaching positions.

At this time, all of our teaching positions require a bachelor’s degree from the United States and US teaching certificate.

We require eligibility to work in the United States (i.e., US work authorization), but you do not have to be physically in the United States as long as you have a US bank account and a US address and phone number for payroll/tax purposes.

NO! As long as you have an area that is quiet and professional you are free to teach from wherever. We want our teachers to have the flexibility to continue to live their life and not be tied to a physical classroom.

At this time, all of our positions are contractor positions. We request that you are available for a 3+ block during school hours between 8am-4pm EST consistently Monday-Friday .

At this time, there is no limit to the number of hours you work for us. We request that you are available for a 3+ block between 8am-4pm EST consistently Monday-Friday . We cannot guarantee any amount of hours.

At this time, all of our positions are during regular school hours between 8am-4pm EST.

Most of our programs follow the traditional school year calendar (August-May) and are for the entire school year, however, we do partner with some schools that need our help during the middle of the school year. We do not offer summer-only positions. During the summer we offer professional development opportunities!

At this time, all of our virtual teaching positions are part-time as 1099 independent contractors , where we do not take out taxes. You will need to file your own taxes at the end of the year.

At this time, all of our virtual teaching positions are as part-time 1099 independent contractors, and they do not include benefits such as insurance.

The Live Assessment is an opportunity to meet with an Onboarding Coordinator (OC) to complete a “mock lesson.” Your OC will provide you with a short content specific lesson on slides and during your meeting you will be teaching them the lesson as they role play the part of the students.

If hired, you will be sent a welcome email from an Onboarding Coordinator with information on completing your paid onboarding courses. Your Onboarding Coordinator will support you through the process to prepare you for your first day of teaching and will be available as you start teaching as well. Depending on the need, you may be offered a program as you complete your onboarding, or you may need to wait until a program becomes available that meets your content and certification.

We have our own curriculum department which creates all lessons so you have limited lesson planning. As a teacher, you will review the lesson for the day to be familiar with the material and decide which student engagement strategies you will use in your instruction of the content. Most student work is auto-graded and grading is minimal. Some content areas may require some more grading than others. You will receive information on grading requirements based on your program assignment.

Know Your Time Commitment

The first question to ask yourself is how much time you can commit to earning your degree. Online courses provide a pathway for working professionals who might not have enough scheduling flexibility for in-person courses. An asynchronous format is a great option for students who need to work their studies around their jobs and other responsibilities.

But even with excellent time management skills, it’s challenging to work and study full time. Enrolling as a part-time student may be more sustainable, but expect to spend more time completing your degree if you study part time. On the other hand, if you can focus solely on your education, you can accelerate your timeline and enter the workforce faster.

Degree-completion programs offer a shorter degree timeline, but they only serve transfer students. If you already hold an associate degree, consider earning your online teaching degree through a two-year degree-completion program.

Look at Accreditation

When searching for a teaching degree, make sure your prospective college and program are accredited.

Institutional accreditation verifies that a school and its faculty maintain a minimum standard of education quality. Plus, federal student aid requires applicants to attend institutionally accredited schools.

In addition to institutional accreditation, programmatic accreditation is important for teachers, who typically must graduate from an approved program to earn licensure or certification. The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation evaluates teaching departments and degree programs.

Consider Your Future Goals

Will you need teaching credentials for your dream job? Though many teaching roles require licensure, some positions in early childhood education and adult education, for example, require a degree but not necessarily a license.

Each teaching program should clearly state whether it meets standards for state licensure. If you pursue an online teaching degree out of state, verify before enrolling that the degree meets your state’s requirements for teaching credentials, if applicable.

Programs that lead to licensure include a full-time, in-person student teaching experience; some online programs allow you to complete this requirement locally or even at your current place of work.

In many cases, earning your degree online saves money, even if you are an out-of-state student. Some schools set a separate, flat tuition rate for all online learners. Others offer in-state rates to distance learners regardless of where they live. However, many colleges charge online support, distance learning or technology fees to remote learners.

One way to save money as an online student is by transferring credits from a community college. The University of West Florida estimates that most in-state students pay about $29,000 for their teaching degree. Students with 90 transfer credits, however, pay only about $9,000 to complete their BA at UWF.

On average, tuition at a two-year college costs about $3,500 per year for in-state students, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). In comparison, public four-year universities cost $9,375 per year on average. Taking two years of general education and prerequisites at a community college can cut down your total degree cost by thousands of dollars.

Online students may also save money by living at home or not living on campus. NCES estimates that students pay more than $11,000 per year in room and board while attending a four-year college.

We scored 96 accredited, nonprofit colleges offering online teaching degree programs in the U.S. using 16 data points in the categories of credibility, affordability, student outcomes, student experience and application process. We pulled the data for these categories from reliable resources such as the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System ; private, third-party data sources; and individual school and program websites. We weighted each category as follows:

Specific characteristics we considered within each category include accreditation, nonprofit status, average net price per year, median earnings among graduates, overall graduation rate, socioeconomic diversity, online offerings and Common App participation.

We chose the 10 best schools to display based on those receiving a curved final score of 88.18% or higher.

The highest-ranking schools are fully accredited, nonprofit institutions with relatively high graduation rates. Schools that rank well have higher student retention rates and lower average annual net prices.

Are online teaching degrees respected?

Yes. As long as your college and program are properly accredited, employers will respect your online degree as much as one earned on campus—and in most cases, they will not be able to tell the difference. If you aim to become a credentialed teacher, however, ensure your online program will prepare you for licensure in the state where you plan to teach.
