Now that you’ve got some great opportunities to apply for, it’s time to get started on your applications. As most scholarships receive a large number of applicants, it’s important to use your application to stand out from the crowd. One way you can do so is through your essays.

As a student pursuing psychology, it’s a good idea to take a moment to determine your career goals before you sit down to write. Think about the path you want to take your career in (don’t worry – you can change this later!) and write what compels you to pursue it. Discuss any personal experiences that have motivated you to pursue your interest.

If you are hoping to be a research psychologist, you could discuss how you hope to change the world via your research. On the other hand, if you hope to be a clinical psychologist, you could write about the type of support you hope to provide your future patients. In any case, framing your application in terms of future goals is always a good idea.

You might recognize the APA as creators of the APA citation format used in many academic bibliographies. This association also offers students access to networking opportunities, research, scholarships, and a lot more!

Frequently asked questions about psychology scholarships

Can i use psychology scholarships to study psychiatry.

The answer to this question depends on the scholarship — though these fields share some key similarities, they involve different courses of study. Though some scholarships will allow students of both disciplines, you should check the terms and conditions of the opportunity thoroughly before applying. If you are still unsure, you can reach out to the scholarship provider.

Are psychology scholarships available for high school students?

Yes! Many of these opportunities allow applicants who are in high school. These opportunities typically require less firm commitment to the field of psychology. It’s often enough for a high school student to show interest in studying psychology. However, once you enter college, most psychology scholarships will require that you have declared a psychology major or minor.

Fully Funded PhD Programs in Clinical Psychology

A picture of the Victoria Building at the University of Liverpool in England, which offers a fully funded phd in clinical psychology. The Victoria Building holds historical significance because it was the first purpose-built building for what was to become the University of Liverpool, with accommodation for administration, teaching, common rooms and a library.

Last updated November June 22, 2023

As part of our series  How to Fully Fund Your PhD , here is a list of universities that offer fully funded PhD programs in Clinical Psychology. A PhD in Clinical Psychology opens the door to many opportunities, leading to careers in academia, private practice, and medicine.

Fully funded PhD programs in Clinical Psychology are those that offer a financial aid package for full-time students that provides full-tuition remission in addition to an annual stipend or salary for the duration of the program, which is usually 3-6 years. Full funding usually comes in the form of a graduate assistantship, with the expectation that students will teach or complete research in their field of study. Not all Clinical Psychology PhD programs offer full funding to their doctoral students, which is why researching the financial aid offerings of many different programs, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad, is essential.

In addition to listing fully funded PhD and Master’s programs, the ProFellow database also includes external funding opportunities for graduate school, dissertation research, fieldwork, language study, study abroad, summer work experiences, and professional development.

Sponsored School(s)

Career opportunities in the field of psychology are vast. Yes, you could be a psychologist, but you can also work in human resources, social work, forensics, or school counseling, among many more positions. The one thing that every one of these has in common, aside from working with and being able to understand people, is that they all require an education. And psychology degrees cost money. Tuition can add up to tens of thousands of dollars every year, and that’s no easy load to carry without some help.

College money

Discovering scholarships is simple. Some aid is need-based and some is determined by merit. Academic scholarships, community service scholarships, athletic scholarships, extracurricular scholarships, identity- and ethnic- based scholarships, and employer and military scholarships are some of the most common types.

So, How Do you Get a Scholarship for Psychology?

The first step is to visit your high school counselor or the financial aid office at your college and get informed about the options available to you. Organizations, foundations, and local business groups will often award scholarships to local students. You might be surprised – even your employer or your parents’ employers may offer some scholarship. A valuable (and free) tool is careeronestop , a website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor that allows you to search for scholarships as well as other financial aid opportunities such as fellowships and grants.

When choosing a school , students should also complete the FAFSA, which is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The application will be processed to determine what financial aid a current or prospective college student is eligible for, whether the money is needed for a traditional campus experience or for helping to pay for an online psychology degree .

What GPA Do You Need to Get a Full Scholarship?

It depends. High-achieving 3.5 and up students with great test scores and impressive transcripts definitely have a leg up on being awarded money for college, but the amount will vary depending on the awarding agency, and the cost of colleges also differs greatly. Needs-based scholarships may allow a little more latitude for lower GPAs. Academic scholarships have the potential to cover the entire cost of a degree program, or they may just contribute toward it.

Also, students who don’t have very high GPAs are not ruled out from receiving scholarships. They can earn awards based on their involvement in the community, their athletic talent, and even their hobbies. There’s no limit to the amount of scholarships a student can apply for, and the more the better. A straight-A student with a gift for basketball and Jewish heritage can apply for academic, athletic, and ethnic-bases scholarships. Every student has multiple opportunities to apply for scholarships and other aid.

What is the Easiest Scholarship to Get?

There’s really no simple answer to this, although the easiest way to receive any scholarship is to apply to as many as possible. For low-income students, need-based scholarships may be the easiest because income is easily quantifiable, but that doesn’t mean it will be difficult for someone who comes from a middle-class family to work hard and be rewarded with academic, talent-based, or community scholarships.

PhD Admissions

The PhD program in Psychology trains students for careers in research and teaching. In addition to a wide range of courses, the PhD program is characterized by close collaboration between students and their faculty advisors.

General Information

The Department of Psychology holistically reviews each candidate's complete application to assess the promise of a career in teaching and research. Consideration is based on various factors, including courses taken, grade point average, letters of recommendation, and the statement of purpose. Additionally, the Department of Psychology places considerable emphasis on research training, and admitted students have often been involved in independent research as undergraduate students or post-baccalaureate settings. Although there are no course requirements for admission, all applicants should have sufficient foundational knowledge and research experience to engage in graduate-level coursework and research.

We accept students with undergraduate degrees and those with both undergraduate and master's degrees. An undergraduate psychology major is not required; the Department welcomes applicants from other academic backgrounds.

Our application portal will open for the AY25-26 admissions cycle on September 15, 2024.

Our 2025-26 Admissions application will open on September 15, 2024.

Staff will add them to the application file if the review process is still underway. Still, the faculty reviewers are not obligated to re-review files for materials submitted after the deadline.

Generally, students will hear from us by the end of January.

The status of submitted applications can be viewed anytime by logging in to the   application portal .

The deadline to apply for the '25-26 PhD cohort this year is  November 30, 2024 . Applicants who are admitted to the program will matriculate in Autumn 2025.

Application Review & Status Check

The Department of Psychology welcomes graduate applications from individuals with a broad range of life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds who would contribute to our community of scholars. The review of applications is holistic and individualized, considering each applicant’s academic record and accomplishments, letters of recommendation, and admissions essays to understand how an applicant’s life experiences have shaped their past and potential contributions to their field.

To check the status or activity of your application, please log into your  application account . You can also send reminders to recommenders who have not yet submitted their letter of recommendation.

Due to limited bandwidth, the Department of Psychology staff will not answer any phone or email queries about application status, including requests to confirm the receipt of official transcripts.

Our faculty will interview prospective students before making final admission decisions. Candidates who progress to the interview round will be informed in January. Interviews are generally conducted in February.

*Graduate student admissions are among the most important decisions we make as a department. Like many other PhD programs around the US and abroad, we have wrestled with the question of whether we should continue to require that applicants to our PhD program submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as part of their application. After extensive review of the scientific literature and robust discussion among our faculty, we have decided to continue to make submission of GRE scores optional, but to Recommend that students submit GRE scores if they are able to do so. We wanted to share our candid thoughts on this here.

A number of empirical and review papers have noted that performance on the GRE is not a strong predictor of performance on a number of graduate school metrics (e.g., correlation with graduate school GPA = .21-.31, which represent small to medium effect sizes; Woo et al., 2023) and that the fact that the significant group differences (by race/ethnicity and gender) in GRE scores suggest it may discourage those from underrepresented groups from applying to PhD programs. Other research has shown that although there are limitations to the GRE, other potential predictors of success in graduate school have even smaller correlations with such outcomes, and removing the GRE would lead us to rely on these other potentially biased factors, such as where a person received their undergraduate degree, what research lab they had the opportunity to train in, and letters of recommendation.(1) We have heard anecdotally from current and former PhD students (including those historically underrepresented in PhD programs) who argue that the GRE helped them demonstrate their abilities when they didn’t attend a top undergraduate institution or work in a well-known research lab.

On balance, we acknowledge that the GRE is an imperfect test and should not be used as the single deciding factor in admissions; however, we fear that excluding it altogether will introduce more, not less, bias into the admissions decision-making process. Thus, we have decided to keep the submission of GRE scores optional, but to recommend that students submit their scores if they are able to do so.

We know that many students might expect that we are looking for near-perfect scores as a requirement for admission. We are not. We do not use a rigid threshold for GRE scores, and take it into consideration with other factors (e.g., strong performance in undergraduate statistics might be used to demonstrate quantitative abilities in place of strong performance on the quantitative section of the GRE). To be transparent about this, we note that our past 10 years’ of admitted PhD applicants have had scores on the GRE ranging on the Quantitative section from the 38th to the 98th percentile, and on the Verbal section ranging from the 59th to the 99th percentile.(2 )

We will continue to work toward determining how to make admissions decisions in a way that identifies the candidates who match best with what our PhD training program has to offer and in doing so may make further adjustments to our admissions requirements in future admissions cycles.

Free money for education

Check out these oft-overlooked sources of funding for psychology graduate students.

By Amy Novotney

Print version: page 36

Most students who are training to be psychologists don't choose the field in search of a big salary. For many, their degree will also come with a heavy debt load. According to 2009 data from APA's Center for Workforce Studies, recent graduates in health-service-provider subfields face an average debt of more than $88,000, with 78 percent reporting some debt upon graduation.

Students with a research bent tend to fare better, reporting average student loan debt of nearly $50,000, with just over half graduating with no debt at all, thanks to traditional academic sources of support, such as teaching and research assistantships.

But no matter what area of psychology you're interested in, there are many ways to finance your education, including awards to help you fund your dissertation research, tuition tax credits, and travel grants that allow you to attend conferences to publicize your research interests and meet potential employers.

Here's a wrap-up of the money you may be missing out on.

Your School

Programs/awards: Most graduate schools, including many PsyD and master's degree programs, offer scholarships. Eligibility factors include a student's financial need, merit, community involvement or minority status. Key information: Many scholarships are made available only to new, incoming students, though some awards are open to current students. Deadline: Varies by school For more information: Check your program's website for more information, or contact a financial aid officer.

The Federal Government

Deadline: Mid-November, though specific dates vary by field of science For more information:   National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)

Programs/awards: National Institutes of Health Key information: The NIH provides National Research Service Awards training grants and fellowships, as well as loan repayment programs, through its Office of Extramural Research. The grants provide partial tuition and fees; a stipend; and an allowance for such costs as books, travel to scientific meetings and health insurance. Deadline: Varies For more information:   Extramural Training Mechanisms

Programs/awards: Department of Defense Key information: The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of 15 supported disciplines, including cognitive, neural and behavioral sciences. Recipients receive full tuition and mandatory fee payment for three years, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance. Deadline: December For more information:   National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship

Programs/awards: Tax credits and tax deductions Key information: The federal government provides several tax incentives to help defray the cost of post-secondary education. Many graduate students are eligible for the American Opportunity Tax Credit, which can be claimed for tuition and certain expenses for the first four years of post-secondary education. Students are eligible for the full $2,500 credit if their modified adjusted gross income is $80,000 or less ($160,000 or less for married couples filing a joint return). The credit is phased out for taxpayers with incomes above these levels. Deadline: April 15 For more information:   IRS

State Psychological Organizations

Programs/awards: Many state psychological associations offer scholarships to graduate students to offset research costs, reward advocacy work or help students attend the association's annual conference. Key information: Most scholarships require the recipient to be a member of the state association. (Student membership dues are often significantly reduced or even free for the first year.) Deadline: Varies by association For more information: Contact your state psychological association for more information. A list of state association websites is available.

Programs/awards: APA's Science Directorate sponsors several research-based awards, including an annual competition for dissertation research funding. Each year, the group also provides 100 student travel awards to help psychology graduate students travel to the annual APA convention to present their research. 9 Best Psychology Scholarships in the USA

Scholarships and grants are especially popular in the United States of America as a democratic country. The best sources for financial assistance to the most talented researchers who major in psychology are universities, labs, funds, and NGOs.

Be persistent and proactive in your desire to join an applicant pool and increase your chance of getting the money to continue your study.

The best way to succeed in this process is to look everywhere and apply for as many specialized scholarships in the US as you can find. As they say, if you cast a wide net, you will get some fish.

There are many web aggregators and educational platforms that will support you in your search.

Whether you want to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree in different fields of psychology or just need a research grant, be bold and go ahead.

Top 9 Scholarships

Here is a list of top 9 scholarships for those studying psychology and craving for professional growth:

1. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University

This highly reputable institution invites all qualified candidates promising to make graduate study financially affordable to the most talented of them.

There is the special Office of Financial Aid helping PhD or MA applicants to make up a strategy to get resources necessary to complete their graduate education. This is a superb opportunity for the learners who see their future in science or academic environment.

2. NAJA Graduate Scholarship

It has been available since 1962 for the most gifted fellows going to pursue their careers working directly with children. It was established by the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries for second-year graduates interested in researching different mental health problems, speech pathology, or special education.

If you dream of becoming a useful member of society, this is obviously your choice.

3. DatingAdvice.com Future Counselors of America Scholarship

With $ 1000 to boost virtual dating studies , it’s an unexpected donation to help lonely hearts.

This money is allocated annually to students with a 3.5 or higher GPA. To apply, you must submit a 500+ word essay on why people go online for love.

If you feel it hard to cope with academic writing, feel free to hire a writer at a reliable custom essay writing agency. This way, you will get professional assistance with your assignment in a timely manner.

4. American Psychological Foundation Scott and Paul Pearsall Grant

The grant is tailored specifically for the graduates and early career workers who want to raise a level of public concern for adults who live with obvious physical disabilities, f. e. cerebral palsy.

The society should understand the psychological pain and stigma experienced by these people. Thus the students are expected to develop really effective strategies to reduce such harmful misconceptions and mistreating.

5. APA Student Research Award

Established by the society for the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality , this financial support program is aimed at graduate and undergraduate students.

Given the high spiritual role religion plays in our lives, there are a lot of issues to examine in-depth. Lucky recipients are supposed to use the money to complete their own project in the field.

6. Department of Psychology Scholarships & Awards, University of Minnesota

The department runs several financial programs aimed at practical work and case studies.

There are donor awards supporting undergraduates who gain hands-on experiences at different levels: local communities and international environment.

Travel grants are available for learners daring to participate in a university research conference or professional psychological gatherings. Nowadays, with a global dominance of Zoom-assisted events, local trips are still possible.

7. William G. McGarvey Outstanding Senior Award in Psychology

The scholarship is tailored for college seniors to deepen their knowledge in the field, only for the learners with outstanding academic excellence and psychology achievements.

Winners and their mentors are also awarded a certificate that will beautify a personal cabinet of any practitioner.

8. The Diversity Article Awards

Talented students may enjoy four small grants in the amount of $300 each for the challenging articles on the topic of diversity issues. Whether you are interested in ethnic minorities, physical disabilities, LGBTI, and other similar issues, you may try your luck to produce the best content on a paid basis.

This option is available at the National Honor Society in Psychology that we also know as Psi Chi .

It supports students of different years to complete a degree in psychology. The major perk of this program is that winners may use the money during the current study. Besides, the body is known for long and friendly relationships with the alumni.

A key precondition is an outstanding academic record.

Thanks to generous donations and state funds, many promising future psychologists enjoy all benefits of a supportive higher education community. After all, this noble specialization is more than a profession but a calling to help society and make this world a better place for those in need.
