The Kind and Tender Heart of ‘Unforgettable’

Wanggo Gallaga

  • October 28, 2019

There’s a breath of fresh air in directors Jun Lana and Perci Intalan’s ‘ Unforgettable ’ with Sarah Geronimo. It is a film that is unashamedly good-natured and cheerful that it really stands out in a cinematic landscape that is filled with all-too-real depictions of the world in all its cynical and jaded glory. ‘Unforgettable’ serves as a reminder that there is still goodness around us and that all it takes is just a little bit of kindness.

The story revolves around Sarah Geronimo’s Jasmine, a young woman with an unidentified mental disability. It is unclear or unspecified whether she has asperger's or if she’s in the spectrum of autism but it seems likely. She lives alone with her grandmother, played by Gina Pareno, in Baguio in relative peace. But when Jasmine’s grandmother gets tuberculosis, Jasmine must move to the city to live with her sister Dahlia (Ara Mina) while her grandmother gets better in the hospital.

But unlike her grandmother, Dahlia is not tolerant nor understanding of Jasmine’s condition. Dahlia finds Jasmine spoiled as her condition makes her prone to tantrums when she doesn’t get what she wants, and she has a tendency of being tactless because of her inability to read social cues. Jasmine is frank, candid, and honest, and in a society that favors politeness over all, it can get her into a lot of trouble.

When Jasmine comes into contact with a dog, one that somehow looks exactly like her grandmother’s dog from her stories, Jasmine insists on bringing the newly named “Happy” to her lola in Baguio against her sister’s wishes. ‘Unforgettable’ then becomes a road trip movie from Manila to Baguio where Jasmine and Happy meet a whole bunch of people (all played by big stars like Yayo Aguila, Kim Molina, Anne Curtis, Marco Gumabao, Dennis Padilla, Alessandra De Rossi, and so on) and their lives are all enriched by each others interactions.

At the center of it all is Sarah Geronimo who gives a fully committed performance as Jasmine. Even without specifying her condition, Geronimo manages to competently portray the signs of autism: inability to make eye contact, inappropriate social interactions, monotonous speech, intense focus on one topic, and behavioural disturbance (such as tantrums). Sarah Geronimo commits fully to the character while fully utilizing her charisma to keep Jasmine from being comical or a caricature.

Because of this committed performance, not everyone shines when working alongside a character who has a difficulty connecting. The most successful of her co-stars to truly shine in their roles and engagement with Sarah Geronimo as Jasmine are Ara Mina, who wonderfully captures the frustration of someone who doesn’t understand her sister’s condition; Yayo Aguila and Kim Molina, who show a hilarious and heartwarming relationship as a provincial mother-and-daughter tandem that serves to gain the most from their meeting with Jasmine; and Anne Curtis and Cherie Gil, whose cameos feel like tongue-in-cheek parodies of themselves or characters they’ve played.

Of all the others who did not fare as well, the episode of Dennis Padilla as a taxi driver with less than good intentions comes off as really off putting in performance. It’s such an over-the-top by Padilla in a scene that’s difficult to sympathise with. It’s the most off-putting in all of the film.

Otherwise, ‘Unforgettable’ is just a lovely feel-good movie about the power and magic of kindness and tenderness. There is an almost ‘Forrest Gump’ feel to the movie with a delightful Filipino flavor. The staging and coverage of many of the scenes feels better suited to television and streaming than it does to cinema. The narrative is so focused on the personal and intimate aspects of Jasmine’s tale that it never really fills up the whole cinema screen. I feel that this would be strongest in the small screen where the closeness to the subjects would greatly benefit the storytelling. As a movie, it feels small.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by VIVA Films (@viva_films) on Oct 9, 2019 at 3:00am PDT

But it’s great to have a film like this; one that reminds us that the world really needs a bit more kindness. It’s a refreshing reprieve from the string of dark and cynical movies we’ve been seeing lately. In this regard, a bit of escapism won’t be so bad, especially if you have the charming Sarah Geronimo taking the lead.

For Rosario Dawson and Katherine Heigl’s characters in Unforgettable , phony civility gives way, as it inevitably, cathartically must, to full-blown smackdown . They’re the warring queens in this well-appointed fairy tale, the beloved new girlfriend and the barely tolerated ex-wife, one good and one very, very bad. Played with utter conviction, neither is as self-assured as she seems, but they’re both ready to take it to the limit as director Denise Di Novi steadily turns up the heat on a lethal bouillabaisse of sex, domesticity and juicy archetypes — a recipe that’s equal parts Fatal Attraction , Charles Perrault and Nancy Meyers.

At the helm for the first-time, and working from screenwriter Christina Hodson’s slick balancing act of aspirational romance and dark psychology, longtime producer Di Novi enlivens the generic mix with a tinge of camp and a sure grasp of mean-girl dynamics; Heathers , after all, was one of her first producing credits. Poised to make a box-office killing, the glossy femme-centric thriller has a sharper edge than the setup, giddily teetering on retrograde nonsense, might suggest.

Release date: Apr 21, 2017

First and foremost, “It’s not about David,” as Dawson’s character, Julia Banks, tells Heigl’s Tessa Connover in the heat of battle. That would be David Connover (Geoff Stults , of Grace and Frankie ), the story’s prince. Like most fairy-tale princes, he’s handsome, has a castle (Southern California real estate, inherited and decidedly luxe ) and is as dull as freshly laundered dirt. A former Wall Street hotshot turned Main Street entrepreneur, he owns a microbrewery . Of course. He’s a catch, as your grandmother might put it, but the jury’s out on whether he’s much of a prize.

Related Stories

Cannes festival adds female directors, competition remains male-dominated.

As the story opens, a visibly battered Julia is being questioned by a police detective (Robert Ray Wisdom), the only suspect in the murder of her abusive ex-boyfriend (Simon Kassianides ). The action then reels back six months to the dream before the nightmare: In San Francisco, website editor Julia gets a spirited send-off from her boss and bestie , Ali (Whitney Cummings, aces in the wisecracking Eve Arden role). In the spirit of fresh starts, she packs up her little car and heads to the tony (fictional) SoCal enclave of Foothill, where she’ll move in with fiancé David and get to know his young daughter, Lily (Isabella Kai Rice). David’s ex, Tessa, quickly claims center stage, even on days when Lily is at her dad’s.

With her knife-straight tresses and exactingly tailored sheaths (kudos to costume designer Marian Toy, who, in contrast, dresses Dawson in flowing prints), Heigl’s unhappily divorced Tessa is the quintessential hissable blonde. She lives in high style without the bother of an actual job — which would only interfere with her full-time pursuit of controlling perfectionism. Thirty years later, Unforgettable flips the Fatal Attraction equation: It’s the stay-at-home mom who’s needy and deranged and the career woman who finds balance, epitomized in the warmth and humor between Julia and Ali (who both work in publishing, as did Glenn Close’s friendless character in the earlier thriller).

It’s always fun to hate on a rich villain, but Di Novi and an excellent Heigl also give us the hurt beneath the monstrous surface. When Tessa witnesses the rapport among Julia, David and Lily in an early scene, the director and Caleb Deschanel , her accomplished cinematographer, zero in on a look so wounded that it lays the foundation for all the gaslighting devilry to come, both IRL and online. (Warning to the masses: Make your passwords less obvious!)

But the screenplay by Hodson ( Shut In ) also applies a thick layer of explanatory background in the form of Tessa’s hypercritical mother, Helen, showing that the poisoned apple doesn’t fall far from the twisted tree. Played to glacial perfection by Cheryl Ladd, Helen is a forbidding figure who’s nonetheless adored by her granddaughter, with Rice a convincing innocent caught up in the matrilineal madness. Helen’s rigid ideas about a woman’s worth — self-hatred disguised as Botox-smoothed self-love — might seem antiquated if she weren’t spewing them in the middle of a Hollywood movie.

No wonder a glassy-eyed Tessa spends so much time brushing her hair before the mirror. And no wonder Julia, afraid of looking weak or damaged, doesn’t tell David about the domestic abuse in her recent past, or the restraining order against her ex that — uh-oh — has just expired.

Di Novi ( The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants ; Crazy, Stupid, Love .) is more interested in the psychological than the scary, but she ratchets up the dread for effective gotcha moments, with Deschanel’s prowling camera capturing an intruder’s p.o.v. as well as a potential victim’s alarm amid the shadows. Pulse-point editing by Frédéric Thoraval and the rising churn of Toby Chu’s smartly used score intensify the jitters. Throughout the drama, but especially in the austere elegance of Tessa’s house and the vibrant sumptuousness of David and Julia’s, Nelson Coates’ character-defining production design ups the aspirational /emotional ante.

Like Heigl , Dawson finds the right degree of nuance within her role, making Julia’s emotional contradictions as persuasive as her resilience, her fighter’s instinct and her smarts. But all the characters, with their movie-glamorous sheen, are figures in a thrill ride, some more fully realized than others. It’s definitely not about David.

What’s recognizable and real in Unforgettable is the way women can turn self-doubt against one another, and the way jealousy can corrode a soul. Di Novi pulls it all together with flair, complete with a nod to the 1945 Gene Tierney starrer   Leave Her to Heaven , perhaps Hollywood’s most deliriously demented portrait of jealousy. Over-the-top villains like those played by Tierney and Heigl might be scarce, but mean girls are out there. Lock your doors. Change your passwords.

‘Unforgettable’ review: Incessantly enchanting

It’s probably too early to tell if Jun Lana’s Unforgettable is indeed unforgettable, but what is for certain is that for the hour and a half it’s on, it enchants incessantly.

Gush of fresh air

Simplicity is a tool the film doesn’t take for granted.

Like Maryo J. delos Reyes’ Magnifico (2003) or Aureaus Solito’s Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (2005), its story is pleasantly uncomplicated even if it isn’t totally oblivious of the world’s cynicism.

Socially awkward Jasmine (Sarah Geronimo) lives with her grandmother Olive (Gina Pareno) in Baguio. When Olive is diagnosed with tuberculosis, Jasmine is forced to move in with her two older sisters (Ara Mina and Meg Imperial) in Manila. There, she befriends a stray dog who reminds her of the story her grandmother would always tell her. Convinced that she needs to bring the dog to her grandmother to cure her, she begins a journey from Manila to Baguio, trusting her fate to the kindness of the strangers she’ll meet along the way.

The film has no grand ambition to dissect the intricacies of the human condition. Its blunt endeavor is to depict kindness without ifs or buts. Its pursuit clearly has no room for cynicism. Because of that and despite the feeling that its narrative feels so familiar as if it was a modern retelling of a parable straight from Jesus’ mouth, it is invigorating, almost like a gush of fresh air in a world that is so used to smog and pollution.

Lana complements the candor of the narrative with apt kitsch and color.

The film is unafraid of melodrama. In fact, it embraces stark emotions, juggling plain humor with scenes that unabashedly target the heartstrings. It does not concern itself with restraint and subtlety, knowing fully well that the best way to get its message across is not through needless sophistication but with candidness. What is most surprising is that its carefully constructed guilelessness and seeming naiveté work to make its plea for a kinder world resound.

Dog and pony show

Unforgettable could have easily been a dog and pony show, a film so blatantly commercial and escapist that its good-naturedness becomes suspect.

It is rife with cameos of the biggest stars playing roles that are written precisely to play their strengths or reasons for their popularity. Anne Curtis is a nurse with delusions of having perfect pitch. Dennis Padilla is a cab driver who cries crocodile tears. Kim Molina is a barrio lass with the foulest mouth. Thankfully, the cameos here do not feel like distractions. Instead, they reinforce the film’s bid for permanence, marrying advocacy and pop culture with astounding seamlessness.

Expectedly, Pareno is excellent here. However, it is clear that Unforgettable is Geronimo’s show.

The singer-turned-actress doesn’t waste the opportunity to shine. She portrays Jasmine with all the sensitivities for the condition her character represents but never to the detriment of the character’s capacity to affect. She maximizes her inherent charisma to turn Jasmine into not just a believable immaculate and innocent girl in a society of harsh complications but also a heroine to really root for.

A lovely film

Unforgettable is a lovely film.

It is a much-needed respite in a world that is overrun by news and events that make one give up on the innate goodness of humanity. – Rappler.com

essay about unforgettable movie

Now streaming on:

There’s trash, and then there’s good trash. “ Unforgettable ” falls into the latter category. Slick, glossy and radiating juicy villainy, it knows exactly what kind of movie it is and goes for it with giddy abandon.

The story of two beautiful women embroiled in a battle over the same blandly handsome man, it’s not a complete parody of the hair-pulling sexual thriller that was a staple of guilty-pleasure cinema in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s and had a revival with 2009’s “Obsessed.” But veteran producer Denise Di Novi (“ Heathers ,” “ The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants ” “ Crazy, Stupid, Love ”), directing for the first time, takes this premise right to the border of knowing camp and delights in letting it simmer there.

I’m not saying it’s good. But I’ll admit that I had a good time.

And a good deal of that has to do with the performance from Katherine Heigl as a scorned divorcee out for revenge against her ex-husband’s new love. With her statuesque frame, platinum mane and icy stares, Heigl dominates her every scene in ways that are hilarious, frightening and hilariously frightening. Finally, this is the perfect use of her commanding on-screen presence; playing rom-com heroines in movies like “27 Dresses,” “ The Ugly Truth ” and “Life As We Know It” always seemed like a poor fit.

But it’s hard to ignore the fact that the depiction of both Heigl’s character, Tessa, and Rosario Dawson ’s Julia seems uncomfortably outdated. “Unforgettable” portrays these women as vicious rivals, both seeking the love and approval of a rich hunk to make them feel validated, complete. But the script from Christina Hodson finds room to explore the origins of their insecurities as well as their feminine strength. And the depiction of perfect, judgmental mommies in a predominately white, wealthy, Pasadena-like town in Southern California isn’t too far off.

Mostly, though, “Unforgettable” is just nutty. This much is clear early on, when Julia cuts into her going-away cake as she prepares to leave the San Francisco online publishing company where she works. Di Novi takes the time to linger on the giant blade as it slices into the letter “L” in her name. We already know that a murder has taken place: Julia’s ex-boyfriend, whose abuse drove her to seek a restraining order and a new life, is now dead. But while the actual whodunit isn’t all that intriguing, the performances and the production values elevate this familiar, tawdry material.

Julia wants to leave her troubles behind and start over with her fiancé, David ( Geoff Stults ), whose chief desirable attribute seems to be that he’s even-tempered. There’s not much to him. But if he’s a Ken doll, his ex, Tessa is “psycho Barbie,” as one character describes her. This is the kind of movie in which people are constantly explaining themselves to each other—and explaining each other to each other. The expository dialogue may be clunky, but the zingers are choice.

Also not terribly subtle is the fact that Tessa and Julia are complete opposites, although the wardrobe selections from costume designer Marian Toy make that clear in inspired ways. Tessa is all stick-straight hair and monochromatic, form-fitting sheaths. She’s an equestrian, and she rides her horse with intense purpose. Julia, meanwhile, is all flowy, dark curls and boho-chic sundresses. She’s a former smoker with a hearty laugh.

“Unforgettable” never specifically addresses the fact that Julia is the only person of color in this idyllic, small town, but you can feel the implicit racism in the way Tessa and her prickly posse size her up with disdain. Dawson’s earthiness keeps the film from spiraling out of control into soapy territory, and she’s afforded the few, rare instances of genuine emotion here. She may actually be  too  good.

Anyway, Julia joins David and his sweet, 6-year-old daughter, Lily ( Isabella Kai Rice ), in the family’s stately, Spanish-style house in the hills. (Veteran cinematographer Caleb Deschanel gives all the interiors a creamy sheen that’s positively Nancy Meyers-worthy.) A former Wall Street financial guru, David is now pursuing his dream of launching a microbrewery; uptight Tessa was never impressed with that plan, but fun-loving Julia is down for whatever.

And it’s that obvious, vibrant connection between the two of them that makes Tessa seethe with jealousy. No bunnies get boiled in “Unforgettable,” but Tessa does engage in some elaborate, high-tech trickery. Her increasingly (and awesomely) ludicrous antics eventually result in the return of Julia’s ex-boyfriend ( Simon Kassianides ), albeit in rather distasteful fashion. It’s all laughs—for us, at least—until then.

But none of the men here are nearly as interesting as the women. Besides Heigl and Dawson, Cheryl Ladd is just deliciously evil as Tessa’s Botoxed and perfectly coifed mother, who will stop at nothing to ensure her daughter’s happiness. Ladd gets some of the film’s most prime, passive-aggressive lines (“Oh, you didn’t bake the scones?”) but her character’s incessant nitpicking also provides a window into what messed Tessa up so badly. And comedian Whitney Cummings does more with the obligatory, wisecracking-best-friend role than you might expect.

None of it is terribly memorable. But it’s fun while it lasts.

This paint-by-number Filipino dog movie succeeds more as a comedy instead of a sad and emotional drama. The random cameo appearances from popular Filipino actors make it more hilarious. The depiction of spectrum disorder is a bit uneven, but Sarah Geronimo's performance as a young woman with a frank, unfiltered personality and childish demeanor is certainly compelling. The dog, Milo, is very entertaining, although not much new material about man and dog relationships is covered. The plot ranges from family drama to road movie, losing a lot of its energy in the mawkish third-act which tries a little bit too hard with the sentimentality. The score is not good, which is no longer a surprise for a mainstream Filipino film. For its 100-minute runtime, it feels strangely long, possibly because of the lack of forward-action in the plot.

This was surely Unforgettable.

My parents watched this and said they didn't finish it because it was boring (But I know I should never listen to their mediocre taste in movies) and they are very wrong, as always.

I think I kinda understand why some people don't like it, maybe because they hated how dumb her decisions were? But honestly, she was just doing it out of kindness and human compassion and others have to understand that she had problems.

Now I loved it even more because Sarah Geronimo is phenomenal as always. She always has this range to pull off amazing performances of young characters. She portrays them so naturally. This movie had a smooth mix of drama and a lot of comedy. Those cameos from different famous celebrities (especially Empoy) really made it more funny. Overall, I would say this was definitely a worth watch.

Slightly autistic Sarah Geronimo going on a road trip with a street dog to visit her sick lola. Cute little story with many special appearances and cameos along the journey. Not as magical as it could have been, but there are plenty of humorous moments along the trip and Sarah and even the dog were adorable.

250 Words Essay on Unforgettable Experience In Life

An uplifting memory.

In the tapestry of life, we encounter a myriad of experiences that leave an indelible mark on our souls. Among these, there exists one particular memory that stands out, an unforgettable experience that continues to evoke vivid emotions and shape our perspectives.

A Serendipitous Encounter

During my formative years, my family undertook a journey to a picturesque seaside town. It was during this sojourn that I stumbled upon a chance encounter that would forever alter the course of my life. While strolling along the sun-kissed beach, I noticed an elderly gentleman sitting on a weathered bench, his eyes lost in contemplation of the vast ocean before him. Curiosity piqued, I approached him and struck up a conversation. The ensuing hours were filled with laughter, storytelling, and the wisdom of a life well-lived. From that day forward, I carried with me the invaluable lessons imparted by this chance encounter, recognizing the profound impact that human connection can have.

Overcoming Adversity

Life’s path is not always paved with ease; challenges and obstacles often present themselves, testing our resilience and grit. It was during one such trying time that I discovered the strength within me. Battling against adversity, I persevered, drawing upon my inner fortitude and the unwavering support of loved ones. This experience taught me the transformative power of resilience, equipping me with the tools to navigate life’s inevitable storms.

The Beauty of Nature’s Embrace

In the realm of unforgettable experiences, one cannot overlook the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. Whether it be the tranquility of a mountain sunrise, the gentle murmur of a flowing river, or the boundless expanse of the night sky, nature possesses an inherent ability to captivate and inspire. Through my interactions with the natural world, I have gained a deep appreciation for its intricacies and boundless wonders, fostering a sense of interconnectedness with all living things.

The Power of Kindness

The world is often painted with kindness and compassion, and it is through experiencing these acts that we find true meaning and purpose. Lending a helping hand to those in need, offering a word of encouragement, or simply being present for someone can make an immeasurable difference. What Saving Private Ryan's D-Day Scene Gets Wrong Explained By Historian

"i'm taking it very personally": glen powell reacts to twisters' missing kiss backlash, the accountant 2 wraps filming, returning star teases new details about ben affleck sequel.

  • Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut is a striking success, with fantastic attention to detail and storytelling depth.
  • Naomi Ackie delivers an excellent performance, while Channing Tatum impresses with his sinister portrayal.
  • The film's psychological thriller elements keep the audience engaged with its intriguing and layered storytelling.

Every once in a while, a directorial feature debut comes along and thoroughly impresses me. Blink Twice , Zoë Kravitz’s first directorial feature — which she co-wrote with E.T. Feigenbaum — doesn’t just captivate, it demands attention. And from start to finish it held it; not an easy feat. The psychological thriller is clever, sharp, and intoxicating, even in its eeriest moments. There’s a charm and depravity that are all too real, hanging over every scene as it makes us wait with bated breath for the big reveal that comes in glimpses and acts as stark contrasts to the characters’ initial excitement.

Blink Twice

To be sure, the events of the film are not something Frida (Naomi Ackie) was expecting. A cocktail waitress with an infatuation with disgraced tech mogul Slater King (Channing Tatum), who apologizes for past transgressions and steps down as CEO of his company, Frida and her friend Jess (Alia Shawkat) are thrilled when they’re invited to Slater’s private island. While we know there’s something that’s just not right about this offer, the endless pop of champagne, the sensual spraying of perfume, and the endless fun the characters seem to be having instantly draw us into this tantalizing, yet harrowing world.

Zoë Kravitz's Directorial Debut Is Striking

For a first-time feature filmmaker , Kravitz has a sharp and clear creative vision, and is able to execute it with immense precision. Slater’s private island is warm and inviting, bright without being unnaturally so. The costumes, largely made up of white dresses for the women and white shirts for the men, are impeccable while simultaneously tipping us off that something is wrong with the entire scenario. Kravitz’s close-ups on Ackie are especially moving and occasionally haunting. They allow us to witness her emotional state, but don’t give away everything before its time.

It’s always just enough to make me feel unsettled without over-explaining anything that’s going on. Through such excellent camera work, Blink Twice excels at warping the mind, tricking us into a false sense of happiness even as it raises gooseflesh. The editing by Kathryn J. Schubert is especially fantastic, and her quick cuts to convey the repetitiveness of the characters’ daily activities makes it feel like we’re being thrown in the middle of some disturbing time loop. The truth is far more disturbing, and Blink Twice is good at keeping us on our toes with a stunning buildup.

The film is also a reminder of how a well-written and nicely paced story can be executed in only an hour and 42 minutes. Kravitz doesn’t linger longer than necessary, and the largely single-location setting never grows tired because there’s always something new for Frida to discover. Beyond the aesthetics and technical elements, Blink Twice has deeply explored themes — including trauma — that’ll reverberate. The experiences the women have in the film are evocative, and Kravitz has a message that hits close to home in its realness and intention; the nuances are embedded so that a second watch would prove beneficial.

Naomi Ackie Delivers A Stunning Performance In Blink Twice

Channing tatum is effective as a mysterious tech mogul.

Blink Twice has everything going for it, but it’s bolstered further by an emotionally effective and layered performance by Ackie, who grounds the film as the waves of the story move around and through her. She is a force to be reckoned with, bringing levels of pain, confusion, excitement and determination that make us fear for her life and root for her at the same time. Ackie is perfect as Frida, giving an awards-worthy performance. In her character exists a sharp reality that this could happen to any woman, making her situation all the more harrowing.

Tatum employs his charisma as Slater, and he’s able to pull off a momentarily sympathetic performance before that transforms into something more sinister. His character is the kind of man we’ve seen before — in the media and in real life — and Tatum mines Slater’s trauma and uses it as a cover. The actor isn’t over-the-top in his portrayal, and that’s part of the reason it’s so effective.

It makes me excited for whatever Kravitz does next, as she’s proven herself an impeccable director and storyteller with depth and a sharp eye for detail.

Shawkat’s Jess is the sensible one, but even she’s dragged into the cloud of bliss that’s presented to her and Frida. And the investment in the characters is so good that when things take a turn, we care about what happens to her. Shawkat has always been a reliable actor, and it’s no different here. She imbues Jess with a suspicion she’s willing to discard to appease her friend. Unsurprisingly, Adria Arjona (of Netflix’s Hit Man ) is a scene-stealer as Sarah, a seemingly snobby reality TV star who’s initially jealous of the attention Slater gives Frida.

The rest of the supporting cast — including Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, and Geena Davis, in a role that is both shocking and not — is superb. Their roles are more subtle, but they’re no less memorable in the grand scheme of the film’s story. All told, Kravitz’s Blink Twice is a film I was intrigued by from the start, but was unconvinced it would be so thoroughly engaging and smart as it was. It makes me excited for whatever Kravitz does next, as she’s proven herself an impeccable director and storyteller with depth and a sharp eye for detail.

Blink Twice is in theaters Friday, August 23. The film is 102 minutes long and is rated R for strong violent content, sexual assault, drug use and language throughout, and some sexual references.

Blink Twice 2024 Film Release Poster

Directed by Zoë Kravitz, Blink Twice is a drama thriller film, marking her first foray into the world of directing. The film follows a cocktail waitress invited to a tech billionaire's private resort home to party with them - but after arriving, she begins to discover the dark truth behind the island.

  • Zoë Kravitz's eye for detail is fantastic
  • The film's storytelling is deep and it has a good message
  • Naomi Ackie is excellent in the lead role, and Channing Tatum is wonderfully sinister
  • Blink Twice's psychological thriller elements are exciting

Labyrinth Remake 2024: Why Do Fans Think Tom Hiddleston Will Appear?

Labyrinth Remake 2024: Why Do Fans Think Tom Hiddleston Will Appear?

By Abdul Azim Naushad

A Labyrinth remake poster featuring Tom Hiddleston along with a synopsis teasing a role for Hailee Steinfeld has sparked a lot of speculation online. This was after the poster made its way online. This speculation has led to fans wondering whether this upcoming remake of Jim Henson’s 1986 film is real or fake. Moreover, fans are curious about whether Hiddleston and Steinfeld are indeed appearing in this remake.

Here’s everything you need to know if the Labyrinth remake is real or fake and if Tom Hiddleston and Hailee Steinfeld have bagged roles in the remake.

Is 2024’s Labyrinth remake real or fake?

The 2024 Labyrinth remake is fake. This is because there is no confirmation of a Labyrinth remake.

A user, Vanilla 21s, recently posted a picture of the fake remake’s fan-made poster on Facebook . This poster featured Tom Hiddleston and claimed a release date of November 2024. Moreover, the user also came up with a synopsis that claimed Hailee Steinfeld would also appear in the film, playing Sarah. The synopsis also claimed that Hiddleston would essay the role of Jareth.

The fake Labyrinth synopsis reads:

“Get ready to embark on a mesmerizing journey through the Labyrinth with Tom Hiddleston as the enigmatic Jareth and Hailee Steinfeld as the determined Sarah. This remake of the classic film features all-new music crafted by the iconic singer-songwriter, Jonathan Davis of Korn, weaving a spellbinding soundtrack that adds a modern twist to this beloved tale of magic and adventure. Join them as they navigate the twists and turns of the maze to save Sarah’s baby brother from the clutches of the Goblin King. Coming to theaters in November 2024.”

The original Labyrinth movie was released in 1986. Directed by Jim Henson and executive produced by Star Wars creator George Lucas, the film starred Jennifer Connelly as Sarah and the late David Bowie as Jareth.

Will Tom Hiddleston and Hailee Steinfeld appear in a Labyrinth movie?

Tom Hiddleston and Hailee Steinfeld are not confirmed to appear in a Labyrinth remake movie or sequel.

News of a Labyrinth reboot/remake first surfaced on the web in 2016. This was after Variety reported that Sony closed a deal with the Jim Henson Company to co-produce the film via their TriStar division. This report also confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy co-scribe Nicole Perlman as the screenplay writer. The following year, another Variety report suggested that Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez was tapped to helm the movie. This was in addition to Alvarez co-writing the movie with Jay Basu.

Then in 2020, Scott Derickson was tapped to write and direct the movie, as per Deadline . This was after Alvarez stepped down from the project. (via Bloody Disgusting )

Later in 2021, Jennifer Connelly confirmed to Collider about discussions she had with producers on the Labyrinth sequel but was unsure of its status.

However, in February 2024, Brian Henson, chairman of the Jim Henson Company expressed excitement to ComicBook , about the Labyrinth sequel, but did not dish out any more details about it. Later in May 2024, Jim Henson Company CEO Lisa Henson told Paste that development on a sequel faced roadblocks because they “haven’t been able to get the script right”. Here, Lisa Henson also noted that they and TriStar were starting over the development process.

The Australian Professor Who Turned Breaking on Its Head

Rachael Gunn, known as B-girl Raygun, displayed some … unique moves as she competed in a field with breakers half her age. The judges and the internet were underwhelmed.

A woman wearing green track pants, a green polo shirt and a cap poses with her hand up in front of a judges table.

By Dodai Stewart and Talya Minsberg

Reporting from Paris

Breaking made its debut as an Olympic sport Friday, and among the competitors was Dr. Rachael Gunn, also known as B-girl Raygun, a 36-year-old professor from Sydney, Australia, who stood out in just about every way.

By day, her research interests include “dance, gender politics, and the dynamics between theoretical and practical methodologies.” But on the world’s stage in Paris, wearing green track pants and a green polo shirt instead of the street-style outfits of her much younger fellow breakers, she competed against the 21-year-old Logan Edra of the United States, known as Logistx.

During the round robin, as Raygun and Logistx faced off, Raygun laid on her side, reached for her toes, spun around, and threw in a kangaroo hop — a nod to her homeland. She performed a move that looked something like swimming and another that could best be described as duckwalking. The high-speed back and head spins that other breakers would demonstrate were mostly absent.

The crowd cheered Raygun politely. The judges weren’t as kind. All nine voted for Logistx in both rounds of the competition; Logistx won, 18-0.

Online, Raygun’s performance quickly became a sensation, not necessarily in a flattering way.

“The more I watch the videos of Raygun, the Aussie breaker, the more I get annoyed,” one viewer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “There’s 27.7 million Australians in the world and that’s who they send to the Olympics for this inaugural event??? C’mon now!”
