Colman domingo's 'sing sing' is a rare empathetic prison drama.
August 5, 2024 The moving drama Sing Sing stars Colman Domingo as the leader of a tight-knit theatre ensemble within one of the most notorious maximum-security prisons in the United States. Most of the cast are alumni of the actual program who had input on the filmmaking process. The movie showcases the ups and downs of putting on a show without being overly sentimental or cliché.

M. Night Shyamalan lays his own parent 'Trap,' and it's truly bonkers
August 2, 2024 M. Night Shyamalan's new thriller Trap stars Josh Hartnett as a father attending a pop concert with his teenage daughter. But all is not as it appears. It quickly turns out that the entire concert is surrounded by police who are trying to catch a dangerous serial killer in the most difficult way possible. There is a lot going on in this bonkers movie: lots of pop songs, and lots of strange decision-making.

There's been a lot of online chatter about Denzel Washington and his accent in the upcoming movie Gladiator II. There are longstanding conventions around using a posh-sounding British accent for ancient characters ... but why? Nobody spoke English in Rome. Cuba Scott/Paramount Pictures hide caption
So how do you 'accurately' speak English in ancient Rome?
July 26, 2024 Many studios and viewers cling to longstanding conventions around using a posh-sounding British accent for ancient characters — even though this defies logic. Absolutely no one spoke English in Rome.

'Deadpool & Wolverine' is a feast of inside jokes
July 26, 2024 In the highly meta Deadpool & Wolverine , Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman finally meet up for their own big movie. The movie is jam-packed with fan service and Easter eggs. But how will casual Marvel fans like the movie?

'twister,' 'twisters' and the actual practice of storm chasing.

The rise of the ar-15; plus, why do comedians play so many cops.
July 19, 2024 Last Saturday, former president Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania when a gunman shot at him – killing one spectator and clipping Trump in the ear. The response? Outrage, condemnations, and prayers on all sides... but there's been less chatter about the gun that shot at him. And this gun has a lot of symbolism: The AR-15. Host Brittany Luse is joined by The Wall Street Journal 's Zusha Elinson, co-author of the book American Gun , and Jennifer Mascia, senior news writer and founding staffer at The Trace , a nonpartisan nonprofit newsroom that covers guns. Together, they discuss how the AR-15 style rifle went from an outcast in the gun world to the one of the biggest pro-gun symbols and why that actually reflects bigger cultural shifts.

July 15, 2024 They're calling it the scariest movie of the year. The new horror film Longlegs follows FBI special agent Lee Harker (Mika Monroe) tracking a serial killer in the 1990s. If that sounds like familiar ground, consider this – the clues she follows hint at the involvement of the occult in general and Satanism in particular. The 21 best journalism movies
EW takes a look at some of the best journalism-centric films of all time, spanning classics like "Network" to modern movies such as "The French Dispatch."
Sometimes the story behind a story can be just as compelling as the actual narrative itself. Cinema's rich history of films chronicling the real and fictionalized accounts of journalists chasing the stories they believe deserve to be told have continued to entertain us for years — investigating imbalances in power, newsrooms generating fraught relationships, and cynical writers learning to look at the world in a new way from the idealization of their subject. Through it all, tales of journalism are ripe for dramatic tension and complex characters.
When She Said hit theaters in November 2022, detailing the shocking story of the New York Times report by Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor that exposed the sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein and kick-started the #MeToo movement, we took a look at some of the best movies with the newsroom and reporting at the forefront. The films range from dramatic retellings of history's biggest breaking news stories, like Spotlight and All the President's Men , to 20th-century classics such as Citizen Kane and modern-day marvels like The Post . These are EW's picks, in no particular order, for the most memorable journalism movies.
Spotlight (2015)
Winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, Spotlight is an outstanding dramatization of the tenacious Boston Globe writers who investigated the shocking revelations of child molestation and cover-up in the Catholic Church. Rachel McAdams , Mark Ruffalo , Michael Keaton , Liev Schreiber , Stanley Tucci , and John Slattery are some of the high-profile actors who embody the true-to-life, painstaking journalistic efforts that shocked the world. Spotlight does an incredible job of showing the lengths investigative reporters go to when they feel passionate about a story.

Almost Famous (2000)
William Miller is a teenage boy who gets the chance of a lifetime to go on tour and write a Rolling Stone article about up-and-coming rock band Stillwater, but he soon learns that the real life of a rock star isn't as glamorous as it appears in this funny, heartfelt, 1970s-set coming-of-age story. Patrick Fugit stars as William accompanied by a perfect ensemble cast featuring Kate Hudson , Billy Crudup , Jason Lee , Frances McDormand , and Zooey Deschanel .
Almost Famous captures the complexity of writing so well in its excitement and disappointment that can come along with a story that isn't what it first seemed. Still, watching a frustrated band come together to sing Elton John 's "Tiny Dancer" on their tour bus is a timeless moment of movie magic from writer-director Cameron Crowe .
Where to watch Almost Famous: Paramount+
Network (1976)
Network follows a fictional television network, UBS, and the producers who exploit a deranged former anchor, Howard Beale, to continue his ravings and rantings about the media for their own profit. Peter Finch (who won the first, and still only, posthumous Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Beale), Faye Dunaway , William Holden, Robert Duvall , Beatrice Straight, and Ned Beatty are some of the stars that each give a tour de force performance in this Sidney Lumet-directed classic satirical dramedy that helped shape American film as a medium and remains one of the quintessential movies from the 1970s.

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
"WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You'll get paid when we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed." Three magazine employees ( Aubrey Plaza , Jake Johnson , Karan Soni) go on an assignment to interview a man ( Mark Duplass ) who placed an advertisement seeking a companion for time travel in this indie flick from Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, the team behind Jurassic World . Safety Not Guaranteed puts characters first, allowing them to discover joy in pursuing the unimaginable, both physically and emotionally.

Citizen Kane (1941)
Orson Welles ' magnum opus is well remembered for its pioneering cinematography and ambitious plot structure. The use of flashbacks effectively allows the audience to follow reporters trying to uncover the meaning of Kane's final word: "Rosebud."
With interviews and countless hours of research in the high-vaulted library room, Citizen Kane employs journalistic investigation to help propel the mystery forward in its discovery. It's easy to feel like an investigative journalist while trying to find out for ourselves what made the publishing tycoon tick.

The Insider (1999)
Russell Crowe and Al Pacino shine in this earnest and entertaining thriller about ex-tobacco industry chemist Jeffrey Wigand (Crowe), who comes under attack after breaking an NDA and appearing in a 60 Minutes piece on Big Tobacco produced by the show's Lowell Bergman (Pacino).
Director Michael Mann is a master of the crime drama, and The Insider is no exception in his catalog of intriguing films that peel back the layers of those in power trying to stifle stories before they are told.

The Year of Living Dangerously (1982)
A year after his war film Gallipoli , director Peter Weir reteamed with his Australian star, Mel Gibson , in this historical drama about a reporter covering the political turmoil in Indonesia in the 1960s.
Gibson plays a foreign reporter who falls in love with a British photographer, played by Sigourney Weaver . Juggling professional romance with political intrigue, The Year of Living Dangerously is a complex film about the lengths reporters will go to get the story they're after.

Good Night, and Good Luck (2005)
George Clooney co-wrote, directed, and starred in this biopic about CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow (in a career-best performance from David Strathairn ) who challenges the fear-mongering of Senator Joseph McCarthy. Clocking in at just above 90 minutes, Good Night, and Good Luck tidily and expertly showcases the integrity of Murrow during a restless 1950s. Using archival footage of McCarthy helps place the film in a time and place and accurately displays broadcast news in the middle of the 20th century.

The Post (2017)
When modern day events mirrored a similar threat to journalism and truth, director Steven Spielberg fast-tracked his dramatic retelling of The Washington Post 's involvement in the publishing of the Pentagon Papers that declassified over 20 years of government documents relating to the Vietnam War.
Starring Meryl Streep , Tom Hanks , Bob Odenkirk , Sarah Paulson , Tracy Letts , and Matthew Rhys , The Post is a powerful film of the first female newspaper publisher and her editors to ensure democracy took precedence over power and corruption.

Nightcrawler (2014)
Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a sociopathic con man who, armed with a video camera and a police scanner, dives into the LA crime world to make money and a name for himself. He deals with a TV executive ( Rene Russo ) to sell exclusive crime videos straight to the news, no matter the cost. Nightcrawler provides a thrilling look into the shady secrets of modern-age news with a pulse-pounding third act that shows all that can go wrong.

The Parallax View (1974)
While investigating the assassination of a presidential candidate, reporter Joseph Frady ( Warren Beatty ) uncovers a secret organization that lurks in the shadows and deals in political assassinations. The Parallax View is a taut political thriller that puts a resolute reporter at the center of a story that shows the crucial role journalism plays in thwarting corruption.

Shattered Glass (2003)
Stephen Glass was a hotshot young reporter at The New Republic until it was discovered that he had fabricated over half of his articles. Hayden Christensen traded in his lightsaber for reading glasses as the infamous reporter who fell from grace in this impressively acted and intense drama — also starring Chloë Sevigny and Peter Sarsgaard — that sheds light on the importance of integrity and consequences of lacking any.
Where to watch Shattered Glass : Freevee
The French Dispatch (2021)
Distinctly Wes Anderson , The French Dispatch follows an American newspaper in a French town and the eclectic lives of the citizens that unfold in three uniquely charming tales. Hailed as a "love letter to journalists," Anderson's film is one of his best, weaving the prose and stories that makes journalists breathe.
The story unfolds in multiple acts that features an impressive cast including Timothée Chalamet , Benicio Del Toro , Tilda Swinton , Frances McDormand , Jeffrey Wright , Owen Wilson , and too many others to name.

His Girl Friday (1940)
Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell star in this workplace comedy about a newspaper editor who does everything in his power to stop his ex-wife, who is also one of his reporters, from remarrying. Aside from its famous and utterly memorable star leads, His Girl Friday was innovative for its sound design and the use of the now-commonplace overlapping dialogue. Eighty-plus years later and the film's comedy and depiction of the newsroom holds up well.

Zodiac (2007)
When a serial killer in the Bay Area taunts police by sending letters and cryptic messages, an amateur cartoonist joins the investigative reporters in the spine-tingling case to find the murderer, starting an obsession that leads him to the brink of becoming a victim.
Jake Gyllenhaal joins Robert Downey Jr. , Mark Ruffalo, and Brian Cox in this expertly crafted thriller from David Fincher , which centers on the journalists in the newsroom in their terrifying quest for the unknown identity of the namesake killer that plays out with such tension that it haunts us long after the credits roll.

All the President's Men (1976)
Telling the infamous story of the breaking of the Watergate scandal, All the President's Men is a richly detailed and exhaustive fictionalization of the two famed reporters from The Washington Post , Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford step into the shoes of the inspirational journalists in a classic film that deftly walks us through the determination of Woodward and Bernstein as they unravel their story.
Where to watch All the President's Men : Amazon Prime Video
Frost/Nixon (2008)
On the other side of the Watergate scandal is Frost/Nixon , Ron Howard 's exhilarating drama about the post-Watergate interviews between former President Richard Nixon ( Frank Langella ) and British talk show host David Frost ( Michael Sheen ).
The two actors who originated the roles in London and on Broadway came to the big screen in a film that is superbly acted and earnestly detailed. Frost/Nixon smartly interweaves archival footage within these complex characters and their game of cat-and-mouse for the truth amidst political scandal.

Philomena (2013)
A septuagenarian joins a world-weary journalist to find her long-lost son who she was forced to give away by the Catholic Church more than 50 years ago in this powerful true story. Judi Dench and Steve Coogan star in Philomena , an Oscar-nominated tale about two vastly different protagonists that sheds light on important societal differences in a lighthearted way. No matter how spent and over it the journalist Martin Sixsmith becomes, his profile subject has the power to inadvertently change his heart.

Broadcast News (1987)
Broadcast News interweaves complex narratives about the behind-the-screens dealings that make broadcast TV happen and the dimensional characters at the heart of the story. William Hurt , Albert Brooks , and Holly Hunter play three journalists in a love triangle, delivering memorable characters and an insightful look into the industry.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Great Odin's raven! Is there a fictional anchor more of a big deal than the classy, mustachioed, number one local news anchor in San Diego? Will Ferrell 's Ron Burgundy immediately became a pop culture phenomenon in this quirky comedy from Adam McKay about an old-school news anchor who falls in love with his ambitious coanchor, Veronica Corningstone ( Christina Applegate ) in a male-dominated field. Steve Carell , Paul Rudd , David Koechner , Kathryn Hahn , and Fred Willard round out the stellar cast in this oft-quoted comedy that is a surprisingly astute observation of the chauvinistic '70s workplace (and beyond).
Where to watch Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy : Netflix
She Said (2022)
Universal Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection
She Said is unique in that it's a movie about journalism released almost immediately after the incidents it depicts. Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan play New York Times investigative journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey — both of whom are credited as co-writers — as they turn an eye toward Hollywood in their "Me Too"-era coverage. What starts as hushed rumors becomes a bombshell report about the sexual abuse women endured at the hands of famed producer Harvey Weinstein. It's a difficult story, especially when it was produced so close to the time survivors chose to speak out. —Dustin Nelson

Hollywood’s Message to Red States: Our Movies Are for You
After a period of openly using movies to display progressive values, studios seem to be heeding a message from many ticket buyers: Just entertain us.
By Brooks Barnes
Reporting from Los Angeles
For nearly two decades, Hollywood has seemingly missed no opportunity to sound the alarm about climate change.
There have been cri de coeur documentaries, most notably “An Inconvenient Truth.” Superheroes have been concerned, with Batman bemoaning mankind’s treatment of the planet in “Justice League.” Nary an award show goes by without a star or several begging viewers to take environment-saving action.
So it was startling when the weather-focused “Twisters” arrived from Universal Pictures this month with no mention of climate change at all. If ever there was a perfect vehicle to carry Hollywood’s progressive climate change messaging — a big-budget movie about people caught in worsening storm patterns — wasn’t this it?
Apparently not. Movies should not be about “preaching a message,” Lee Isaac Chung, who directed “Twisters,” said in a prerelease interview that served as a dog whistle to conservative ticket buyers.
Trend spotting in cinema is a hazardous pursuit. Sometimes a movie is just a movie. “Twisters,” however, is emblematic of a clear shift in Hollywood: After a period of openly using movies to display progressive values, sometimes with success at the box office (“Barbie”) and often not (“Strange World,” “The Marvels,” “The Color Purple,” “Dark Waters”), studios seem to be heeding a message that many ticket buyers — especially in the center of the country — have been sending for a long time: We just want to be entertained, no homework attached.
Put bluntly, it amounts to an attempt by Hollywood to bend to red state audiences.
“It’s a reflection of economics and the desperation of the film industry,” said Corby Pons, a movie marketer who focuses on the faith community and is based in Nashville. “We want you to attend our movies. We need you to attend our movies.”

Disney’s movie studio bounces back after two challenging years
Walt Disney Co.’s fabled film studio, backed by the Pixar hit “Inside Out 2,” is roaring back to life and poised to report its first quarterly profit in over two years.
Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News forecast the division that includes theatrical movies will post a profit of about $78 million when Disney reports fiscal third-quarter earnings on Aug. 7, the first positive result since the three months ended in April 2022.
The return to profit suggests Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger’s efforts to revive the film division are starting to pay off. After returning as CEO in November 2022, he cut the number of pictures Disney makes and delayed others, saying publicly the company needed time to improve its storytelling.
That coincided with a wider austerity drive at the company, which was struggling to profitably adapt to the growing popularity of streaming. Since the pandemic and two strikes that shut down Hollywood last year, Iger has eliminated more than 8,000 jobs and cut more than $7.5 billion in annual expenses.
The latest quarter’s results benefited from the May release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and the first two weeks of ticket sales for “Inside Out 2” after its release in mid-June. They follow a string of high-profile failures including “Strange World,” Pixar’s “Lightyear,” Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Haunted Mansion,” “Wish” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
Disney was Hollywood’s highest-grossing studio by a wide margin from 2016 to 2019 on the strength of hits like “Avengers,” “Black Panther” and “Star Wars.” The title went to Comcast Corp.’s Universal Pictures in 2023 following that company’s success with blockbusters including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Oppenheimer.”
Rivals including Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures have also performed well in recent months, powered by titles including “A Quiet Place: Day One,” “Dune: Part Two” and “Anyone But You.”
In the wake of Disney’s misses, Alan Bergman, who has been sole head of the film business since 2021, told employees at a town hall in November that “Inside Out 2,” Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Alien: Romulus” would power the division back to health.
“Inside Out 2,” with $1.52 billion in ticket sales so far, has become the highest-grossing film in Pixar’s history, while July’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” marked the biggest opening weekend ever for an R-rated picture and has since grossed more than $590 million.
“Disney has done an incredible job repositioning some of its most valuable franchises,” said Rich Gelfond, chief executive officer of Imax Corp., which has contracts to play several of Disney’s big-budget releases this year on its giant screens.
Although smaller in revenue than other Disney divisions, the film studio is arguably the most important, developing characters and stories that inspire consumer products, theme parks, cruises and shows on the Disney+ streaming service. It generated $3 billion in profit in fiscal 2018.
Not all of Disney’s pictures in the past two years have been misfires. James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” released in 2022, became the third-highest grossing film in history with $2.32 billion in ticket sales. James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” released last year, delivered almost $846 million in global box-office sales.
The “fewer but better” mantra that now guides Disney will reduce the movie output by some of its franchises for years to come. Iger has delayed some pictures by as much as three years through 2031 to ensure quality control. He pulled back on the volume of Marvel films in particular to avoid overburdening audiences, aiming to make two annually instead of four.
The Burbank, California-based entertainment giant may have another success in the next Alien horror film, which Boxoffice Pro estimates could open to as much as $50 million in weekend ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada later this month. Two animated sequels that are due out this year – “Moana 2” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” – also look promising.
Beyond the studio’s performance, Disney’s report next week will also shed light on the progress on Iger’s other priorities, including boosting sales at its parks as demand slows from a post-pandemic peak, and achieving profitability in streaming by the end of the company’s fiscal year.

This past weekend marked the 2024 edition of San Diego Comic-Con, so it's likely many movie headlines might've passed you by in the last couple of days. For instance, the news about the leads attached to the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot might've fallen off the radar. This week was also marked by the first image of The Fantastic Four cast, thanks to one of the actors playing the MCU heroes, Pedro Pascal . In addition to these exciting updates, Kevin Feige comforted fans with a message about the production of the Blade reboot . To keep up with all the major stories that have come out in the last few days, here is a detailed roundup to inform you about what is happening in the movie realm.
'Riverdale' and 'Outer Bankers' Stars To Lead 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Reboot
After Sony announced the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot a while back, it seemed like there wasn't much news about its production progress. However, as of this week, the core cast has been announced. Outer Banks and Riverdale stars Madelyn Cline and Camila Mendes are in talks to join the project, as well as Sarah Pidgeon ( The Wilds ), Tyriq Withers ( Tell Me Lies ), and Jonah Hauer-King ( The Tattooist of Auschwitz ). Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. , who played Julie James and Ray Bronson in the 1997 horror classic, are likely to reprise their roles in the new film. The upcoming version will be directed by Do Revenge ’s Jennifer Kaytin Robinson , and it is set to come out on July 18, 2025, just in time for a spooky summer release.

The film will be directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
Kevin Feige Is Hellbent on Making the 'Blade' Reboot
After a few setbacks in the production of Blade , including two directors stepping down and a few actors departing, Marvel president Kevin Feige gave a promising update on the future of the reboot. During a conversation with BlackTreeTV , he shared his hope for Blade to be the next addition to the list of MCU R-rated films, following the positive reception of Deadpool & Wolverine . Here is why the Marvel head is so focused on making sure that this film is made:
"For the last few years, as we've been trying to crack that movie, the most important thing for us is not rushing it, and making sure we are making the right Blade movie. Because there were some great Blade movies years ago. They were all rated R. So I think that’s inherent – like Deadpool – that's inherently the character of Blade."
Despite the issues that have plagued the film's production thus far, Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali is still on board as the lead , and he will play opposite Mia Goth . As of now, Blade is expected to arrive in theaters on November 7, 2025.
Kevin Feige Isn’t Giving Up on Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Reboot, Here’s Why
The upcoming film is likely to be R-rated.
Iconic Batman Villain to Make an Appearance in 'Joker: Folie à Deux'
There is another Batman nemesis joining Joker: Folie à Deux , according to the closed captions featured in the film's latest trailer . In the clip's opening shot, Arthur Fleck ( Joaquin Phoenix ) is being transported in a van and the driver of the vehicle is listening to the radio. As the closed caption of the trailer notes, the host on-air is none other than the famous Gotham district attorney, Harvey Dent. As Batman fans well know, the character is later transformed into a Two-Face after an accident. Although, from the likes of the audio snippet, it seems like Harvey Dent is still far from his villainous turn. Although it is still unclear how much of the character viewers will get to see in the Joker sequel, it has been confirmed that the film will arrive in theaters on October 4, 2024, with an exact runtime of 138 minutes .

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Aquaman might not mind if the oceans rise, but moviegoers might.
That’s one of the takeaways from a new study conducted by researchers who set out to determine if today’s Hollywood blockbusters are reflective of the current climate crisis . The vast majority of movies failed the “climate reality check” proposed by the authors, who surveyed 250 movies from 2013 to 2022.
The test is simple — the authors looked to see if a movie presented a story in which climate change exists, and whether a character knows it does. One film that passed the test was the 2017 superhero movie “Justice League, " in which Jason Momoa’s Aquaman character says, “Hey, I don’t mind if the oceans rise” to Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne.
But most movies fell short — fewer than 10% of the 250 films passed, and climate change was mentioned in two or more scenes of fewer than 4% of the films. That’s out of touch with a moviegoing public that wants “to see their reality reflected on screen,” said Colby College English professor Matthew Schneider-Mayerson, lead researcher on the study.
“The top line is just that the vast majority of films, popular films produced over the last 10 years in the United States, are not portraying the world as it is,” Schneider-Mayerson said. “They are portraying a world that is now history or fantasy — a world in which climate change is not happening.”
Researchers at Maine’s Colby College published the study in April along with Good Energy, a Los Angeles-based environmental consultancy. The results were peer reviewed, and the authors are seeking publication in scientific journals. The researchers view the test as a way for audience members, writers and filmmakers to evaluate the representation of climate change on screen.
AP AUDIO: Hollywood movies rarely reflect climate change crisis. These researchers want to change that
AP correspondent Margie Szaroleta reports on a study that finds few Hollywood films put climate change in their storylines.
Some results were surprising. Movies that at first glance appear to have little overlap with climate or the environment passed the test. “Marriage Story,” Noah Baumbach’s emotive 2019 drama about the collapse of a relationship, passed the test in part because Adam Driver’s character is described as “energy conscious,” Schneider-Mayerson said.
The 2022 whodunnit “Glass Onion” and the 2019 folk horror movie “Midsommar” were others to pass the test. Some that were more explicitly about climate change, such as the 2021 satire “Don’t Look Up,” also passed. But “San Andreas,” a 2015 movie about a West Coast earthquake disaster, and “The Meg,” a 2018 action movie set in the ocean, did not.
The authors narrowed the selection of movies by excluding films not set on Earth or set before 2006 or after 2100. They found streaming services had a higher percentage of movies that included climate change than the major studios did.
The study is “valuable for marketing purposes, informational purposes, data accumulation,” said Harry Winer, director of sustainability at the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Winer, who was not involved in the study, said it could also help serve as an incentive to connect audiences with climate stories.
“The audience will be more open to hearing a dialogue about what is right and what is wrong,” Winer said. “It’s a conversation starter.”
The study authors said they see the climate reality check as a kind of Bechdel-Wallace test for climate change. Alison Bechdel, a cartoonist, is credited with popularizing that test in the 1980s by incorporating her friend Liz Wallace’s test about gender representation in film into a comic strip. The test asks if a movie includes at least two female characters who have a conversation about something other than a man.
Bechdel herself spoke highly of the study’s climate test, which she described as “long overdue” in a social media post during this year’s Academy Awards season. Bechdel said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that “for a movie set in the present to ignore this existential threat just doesn’t make sense anymore” in the age of climate change.
“I do worry that screenwriters might do it in a kind of rote way, which could be counterproductive, just like rote ‘strong female characters’ are,” Bechdel said. “But injecting an awareness of our communal plight into the stories we ingest seems like a no-brainer.”

The results are likely to bolster one of Fox’s ongoing pitches to Madison Avenue
Case in point? Fox News assigned “Fox News Sunday” anchor Shannon Bream to be on during Trump’s rally in western Pennsylvania on July 13, in the belief that he might possibly announce his vice-presidential pick. Bream was poised, says Jay Wallace , president and executive editor of Fox News Media, “knowing that we didn’t have a VP nominee at that point, even though Trump was making ti seem like he wouldn’t do anything during that event.”
Fox News has also proven willing to turn its opinion programs into news events, such as a debate Sean Hannity held earlier this year between California Governor Gavin Newsom and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. When it has given over its schedule to news coverage that might not typically appear – including Biden’s recent NATO press conference — “time and time again, viewers have come to us more than anybody else,” says Wallace.
Fox News may have new reason to , as Wallace says, “be where the audience is.” Like its rivals, the network is grappling with the continuing migration of cable and satellite subscribers to streaming services. Even as it sees spikes in viewership, Fox News is projected to see its subscriber base erode by about four million, or 5.8% in 2024, according to Kagan, a market-research firm that is part of S&P Global Intelligence. Subscribers are predicted to fall to about 64.6 million at the end of this year, compared with 60.6 million in 2023. Kagan sees CNN subscribers falling about 4 million, or 5.7%, to 66.3 million. MSNBC’s subscriber base is projected to tumble by about 4 million, or 5.8% to 64.5 million, according to Kagan. Fox is likely to have more appetite for news breaks in the near future, says Wallace. “The election is going to, obviously, create a lot of opportunity, I’m sure.
