But then Steve hears a rumor that an African-American family is moving to his all-Jewish neighborhood. It's 1948 and some of his neighbors are against it. Steve knows this is wrong. His hero, Jackie Robinson, broke the color barrier in baseball the year before.

Chapter sequencing

Chapters are not cataloged correctly. There are 10 chapters in the book and the audiobook has 6 listed. That made it had to follow along with in the book while listening however outside of that it was great.

I must be missing something

Ok, I have kids and I was a kid at one time, but these kids use vocabulary that does not match their age. I wish this writing were more in line with what 5th graders really think and say. The story is funny and the views of each being portrayed as though they are from an interview is interesting. It isn't a bad story, just unbelievable because the kids don't act like kids. The performances are well done.

The homework machine series: book one, by dan gutman.

Meet the D Squad, a foursome of fifth graders at the Grand Canyon School made up of a geek, a class clown, a teacher's pet, and a slacker. They are bound together by one very big secret: the homework machine. Because the machine, code-named Belch, is doing their homework for them, they start spending a lot of time together, attracting a lot of attention. And attention is exactly what you don't want when you are keeping a secret.

Before long, things start to get out of control, and Belch becomes much more powerful than they ever imagined. Now the kids are in a race against their own creation, and the loser could end up in jail...or worse!
