This is your time to shine. Show us who you are and what you can really do.

Before you apply

How can I make sure my application stands out?

Everyone who applies is given the same time and consideration. But there are a few things you can do to ensure your application shines. First, do your research and let us know why you’re interested in joining the band. We love to see cover letters, portfolios, and personal websites as well as CVs/resumes as this gives us a better sense of who you are and what you’re passionate about. Second, pay close attention to our different job descriptions and only apply for the roles you’re truly interested in or that align with your experience.

Can I apply in any other language than English?

We’re a global company, and speaking English is the best way for us to be able to communicate across borders. With this in mind, you’ll need to apply in English and have a good grasp of the language to work here.

I know someone who works at Spotify. Can they refer me?

Sure, reach out to them before you apply. They can submit your details internally, so don’t forget to send them your CV/resume and any other info you think they’ll need.

Can I connect with people who work in the team I want to join?

Yes. We can’t give out Spotifier contact information but please feel free to send them a LinkedIn message and connect with them there.

I want to re-apply for a role - is that OK?

If the role is still open, and it’s been at least six months since your last interview - go ahead. You’re welcome to apply for other open positions too.

How do I apply for an internship?

You’ll find all the information you need, including entry requirements and application timelines, on our Students page .

Does Spotify provide reasonable accommodations during the application process?

Of course! Please do reach out to your recruiter or recruitment coordinator about any additional needs you may have. We’re always happy to help and will do everything we can to accommodate you.

After you apply

I’ve applied! How long does it take to hear back?

We try to get back to everyone within a few weeks of applying. With more popular roles, this may take a bit longer. So please, bear with us!

Can I check the status of my application?

We can’t give updates, no. But rest assured, we review every application we receive and will let you know either way what the outcome will be as soon as possible.

What happens next?

Second, we interview

Dear Spotify

The first time I visited Stockholm, I took some time to look around the Spotify office. The picture above is the picture I took while telling my friend I would someday work here. Working at Spotify is one of my highest dreams. As a UX enthusiast, I aim to work in a company whose product I use every day so I can empathize more when designing or researching. And Spotify is one of them.

As a determined and spirited person, I have been actively involved in numerous professional and voluntary work since I pursued my bachelor's degree. Nothing thrills me more than knowing that my works or stories impact others. My guiding principle is to collect meaningful experiences and stories I may impart and inspire the next generation.

I have worked in a product team since my bachelor's degree final semester. For me, learning is a lifelong process. Hence, I decided to pursue a master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction at Uppsala University to hone my understanding of behavioral science and user psychology to build a more human-centered design, as well as agile and organizational ethics. Thus, I aspire to apply my academic knowledge to industry practice by interning as Project Management at Spotify. Here are some qualities I would bring to the table as a candidate:

🎯 A go-getter: I am a person that genuinely enjoys challenges, trying new things, and taking risks. I am that goal-setter. Studying abroad has been my dream since I was in Junior High School. Though I failed several times to obtain a scholarship but hey, here I am, pursuing a master's degree in Sweden. Moreover, I am always known as someone willing to go the extra mile to do more than what is asked.

💭 A creative and strategic thinker: I have the ability to manage pressure and deal with difficulties calmly. When faced with pressure and problems, I think strategically to deal with situations wisely. I have a structured thinking of putting a framework to an unstructured problem.

🗄 Highly organized: I am quite an organized-freak person. I am well-structured when it comes to work (design, project management, and documentation).

🤝 Lastly, I’m a team player: I value collaboration. I don't mind compromising and taking criticism. I see criticism as constructive feedback for self-improvement.

I am in high hope of learning from and contributing to the Spotify team. I have no doubt that interning at Spotify may serve as a staging ground for my international career and self-improvement. If you are reading this far, I genuinely appreciate your time and thank you!

Spotify resume example

Imagine your life having a soundtrack that is playing all day. Everywhere you go. Even when you go to sleep.

What would it sound like?

How would the happy moments differ from the sad ones? How would you react if the music suddenly shifts, and it stresses you out?

Being able to predict the future is a superpower many of us want. But what would happen in your future was based on soundtrack changes?

What would interviewing for Spotify be like? What would their almighty algorithm recommend?

Will 'Walking on sunshine' play? Or a tune from a true-crime podcast?

Scary to think about it this way, isn’t it?

Yet, you’ll know for sure whether you’ve aced your interview or not. This begs the question, is there anything you can do to change the odds in your favor?

Of course, there is! If you want your experience to sound like a 80s bop and get the job, all you have to do is make your resume stand out. But how?

We’ll show you! Just keep on reading, and we’ll share our tips and tricks on how to land a job at Spotify.

  • What Spotify recruiters are looking for in a potential employee
  • What can you do to prepare for both your resume and the interview
  • Which resume formats are preferred by Spotify hiring managers
  • How to tailor your resume to the role you’re applying for and why this is important
  • How to align your experiences with the company’s goals and appeal to recruiters
  • Which character qualities and skills are trending and how to balance them out
  • What else can you add to leave a lasting impression on hiring managers

Being at the epicenter of so much innovation and enthusiasm can be overwhelming. It usually makes people feel as if there is no way left to get noticed.

But why do I need to think so much outside the box, we hear you ask.

Well, the company posts new available positions every day. And with thousands of applicants trying to get recruiters’ attention every day, it’s tough.

To put this in perspective, the acceptance rate for new interns at Spotify is roughly 0.07%.

You need to turn these odds in your favor.

Before you apply, make sure you:

  • Have researched the company and the role you’re applying for
  • Are comfortable with Spotify’s agile work culture
  • Confirm who the hiring managers for your position are

A good way to see whether you’ll fit right in with your potential colleagues is to visit company events.

For instance, Spotify holds tech meetups which are open to the public .

There you can meet current company employees and ask them about their work. As well as the challenges they face.

Also, remember what we said about confirming who the recruiters are? Yes, this will be helpful:

  • When you send them a thank you over LinkedIn for considering your application
  • Should you need any accommodations during the interview later on

So, how do you prepare for a career at Spotify? What does your resume need to be like to outshine every other candidate?

One advice we always give is to start with company research. More specifically, their core values and mission statement.

Mission statements can be very telling. They provide insights into what the company’s future goals are and how they plan to achieve them.

As such, you need to appeal to those aspirations. After all, your job will be to form the building blocks towards that future.

Consider whether your professional goals align with the company’s future plans.

Spotify’s mission statement goes a little something like this:

"To unlock the potential of human creativity by giving a million creators the opportunity to live off their art and billions of fans the opportunity to enjoy and be inspired by it."

To be able to complete such a mission, the company’s employees must also be original themselves.

That’s why Spotify recruiters suggest you build a personal brand. Be innovative and show up in a way few would think of.

For example, Emily Vu got the job by re-creating the Spotify interface for her resume.

There are those who have used other platform features. Such as the Discover Weekly Playlist or Spotify Wrapped. While others have built and applied with website resumes.

But you don’t need to be so tech-savvy to grab recruiters’ attention. All you have to do is to frame your resume in a way it makes sense to your experiences.

With this in mind, which resume formats are best?

Generally, you have three options:

  • Reverse-chronological resume - perfect for industry veterans and experienced specialists
  • Hybrid resume - best for those changing their career path. Or those with minimum experience
  • Functional resume - usually used by college grads

Although each layout has its own merits, hiring managers prefer the reverse-chronological format. Regardless of your professional experience.

Because they regard each candidate with the respect they deserve. Including recent college graduates.

Spotify recruiters expect you to treat your academic work with the same approach. Just as you would if it was a practical work experience.

This is the reason the company’s internship process resembles a proper job interview. Albeit, a shorter version of it.

Even if you’re a current student applying for an internship or switching careers. Share the stories you’re proud of, highlight your successes.

Don’t believe us? Check out Sam’s story on getting hired at Spotify with Enhancv .

Moving onto the resume components, which should feature on yours?

Must-have sections to add to your Spotify resume:

  • A header to list your contact details and reference your portfolio
  • A resume summary or objective to draw attention to your biggest achievements
  • An experience segment to emphasize how your work aligns with the role offered
  • A skills box to display the range of your talents, both technical and social
  • An education and certificates sections to show your work is up to par with current standards
  • Other supplements you can include to support your application

Good, we have the scope and the frame of your resume now. But what should be the focus of each section?

What do Spotify recruiters want to know about you?

  • Can you describe yourself in three words? What would they be?
  • Are you agile and flexible in your work methods? Can you provide examples?
  • What was the greatest challenge you’ve faced so far? Walk us through how you’ve tackled it.
  • Which project are you most proud of? Why? What makes this project more special than the others?
  • If you were operating as [the role you’ve applied for], how would you handle user growth? What strategy would you use and why?
  • Are you familiar with exploratory research? If yes, provide an example? What was the outcome?

Most of the questions you’ll have to answer during the interview will have to do with strategy.

So, on top of talking about past projects, you’ll also have to discuss case studies. This is where being familiar with the position and the company comes in handy.

Show that you’ve taken the time and consideration to research their issues.

After you submit your resume, follow up with your hiring manager on LinkedIn. Avoid being generic. Instead, send a sincere thank-you message .

Spotify states that there is no way to track your application status. But they make sure they return an answer, no matter the outcome.

If the results are not positive, you can re-apply for the same position only:

  • After 6 months have passed since your last application
  • The position is still available on their website

Starting at the top, the resume header is essentially your business card.

This box holds all your basic information plus links to relevant sources. Such as a portfolio, a website or business social media accounts.

So, what does the header consist of?

  • Your full name
  • Your current job title or the name of the position you’re applying for
  • Your address - both city and state
  • Contact methods - list at least two (preferably a phone number and an email address)
  • Website or online portfolio
  • Business accounts ( LinkedIn , GitHub, Kaggle, etc.)

It’s important to:

  • Keep the section up-to-date
  • Check for any typos or missing information
  • Confirm all included links are in working order

2 Spotify resume header examples

Compare the following resume headers. Which one looks more convincing?

Without a doubt the second one shows more experience and professionalism.

Let’s look at the first example more closely.

The candidate’s title sounds generic. Even if this is her current role, there are many types of backend engineering jobs.

A way to get yourself noticed would be to specify the work you specialize in. Like in the second example.

Adding ‘Machine Learning Specialists’ provides more context. This allows the recruiter to easily vet whether you’re suitable for the job at hand.

If you’re aiming for an ML position, this supplement hints at your expertise. All without making the recruiter scan the rest of your resume.

As we mentioned, provide at least two methods of contact. Especially if you’re applying for a remote position.

Sometimes the hiring managers are located in a different time zone. To make the interview process comfortable for both sides, give them a list of contact options.

Last but not least, Brynn hasn’t listed any side projects, portfolios or social media.

Why are these significant?

"What I’m hearing from recruiters in the tech field is that cover letters are dead. They’re looking at people’s LinkedIn and checking resumes on their mobiles. Enhancv looks great on mobile and it let me put all the stuff I would have packed into a cover letter right on the resume."

Sam, Strategy Operations Lead at Spotify

It follows the same logic the job title description does in your header. It makes the applicant selection process that much easier. Plus, you can wow recruiters with your projects.

Before we get to this question, we have to talk about how these differ from each other.

Both, the summary and the objective, serve the same goal. They highlight your best accomplishments. And attest to how you’ll benefit your future employer.

The main difference is who makes the statement.

If you’re a seasoned expert, the resume summary allows you to highlight your achievements.

By contrast, the resume objective is suitable for those with little to no experience.

Because you can show how your personal goals align with the plans of your future employer.

The best way to illustrate this is with a few sample summaries.

3 Spotify resume summary examples

Take a look at the following section:

To put it bluntly, this sounds fake. The reason the summary is unconvincing is because:

  • It ‘s supposed to represent an industry specialist with 10 years of experience. Yet, the applicant has nothing impressive to show for it. Not even one award.
  • The whole text is too vague, ambiguous and generic. It can apply to anyone. Worse still - it reads like a job description.
  • There is no mention of how the candidate will help Spotify achieve their goal. And listing personal goals alone won’t get you far.

How can this be improved?

Have a look at an edited version of the summary:

It’s like day and night, right?

You have a bit of everything here. And each piece supports the other. You have the:

  • Exact amount of experience the candidate has
  • Tools and languages the individual has mastered during their professional development
  • Names of previous employers. These suggest the scope and scale of project the applicant has handled.
  • Languages the candidate is proficient in . This is a good indicator for which markets and users the individual is better equipped to tackle.

But what if you’re a recent college grad?

You can still make a good impression!

Consider the resume objective below:

Why does this work?

There are three key points here. The applicant displays:

  • Both an interest and an adequate level of expertise about the industry
  • Proactivity and willingness to develop further skills. All qualities Spotify recruiters are searching for
  • How they will work towards achieving Spotify’s goal to reach 1 billion active users

Such a strong pitch will surely prompt recruiters to continue reading your resume.

When building the bulk of your resume, keep in mind to:

  • Note the words and phrases used in the job description
  • Reference past work and tie it with relevant and current Spotify projects

These will help you tailor your resume to the position you’ve chosen.

Why is this important?

First, you need to pass Spotify’s ATS system . This is a software recruiters use to weed out subpar resumes. For example, almost empty documents or completely irrelevant ones.

Think of it as having to find the secret message in the job description. Once it is clear and you list it on your resume, you move onto the interview stage.

Moreover, since Spotify is a big company, there is a second layer of application vetting. The company’s HR team assigns particular keywords to different teams.

Examine the way Spotify describes job requirements in the ad. Try to use the same phrasing while referencing your own projects.

If you’ve done your company research well, this should be a piece of cake! Just align your experiences to Spotify’s interests and future plans.

Want to see what this looks like in action?

3 Spotify resume experience examples,"

Take a look at the experience sample section below:

  • • Planned and conducted exploratory user research.
  • • Translated insights in actionable recommendations.
  • • Applied deep analysis to document workflows and processes.

It’s mediocre at best.

The entry looks sloppy because:

  • No company description or address have been provided. These hint at the industries you’re familiar with. As well as the scope of the projects you’ve handled.
  • UI/UX isn’t a proper job title, it’s a discipline.
  • The bullet points look like phrases taken directly from the job description. No extra value has been added. There’s no mention of projects, nor results.

That’s why it’s key to lead with data. Yes, anyone with the right experience can do the work listed in the entry. But outcomes and achievements make all the difference.

Here is a better version of the same experience section:

  • • Successfully launched 14 new products for 3 different EMEA clients, following a thorough user research, A/B testing and localization for each individual country in the region.
  • • Helped scale 7 products and services by analyzing existing customer data and identifying opportunities for the development of new product features.
  • • Increased product design productivity by 62% as a result of building and mentoring an in-house UX and Marketing team which provided quick user feedback and insights.

As a bonus, we’re sharing another good entry. This time for the backend engineers among you.

  • • Boosted conversion rate by 49% for 5 different clients by developing a Python program which provides future consumer behavior based on historical data.
  • • Reduced product development time by 36% by facilitating idea and knowledge exchange between cross-functional teams.
  • • Achieved a 60% revenue increase across all clients by developing an algorithm which targeted different audiences with the right ads.

If you look closely at Spotify’s job descriptions, you won’t see much technical jargon. Even for engineering and analytical positions.

Sure, there’s the occasional programming language. But all the available jobs are described in terms of goals. And soft skills the company seeks.

Spotify’s recruiters are checking for a cultural match.

So, this is a tough one. Especially for professionals who rely heavily on their technical abilities.

This is not to say that the company doesn’t want tech-savvy individuals. Spotify recruiters want experts who can balance out their hard and soft skills .

The key is to link each of your skills to a particular project and its outcomes.

Flaunting your technical talents the right way

Displaying results with hard skills is easy.

For example, if you’re an engineer, you can present a program you’ve developed. More importantly, you should explain what it contributed to its users.

Measure the impact of your work. Share your proudest accomplishments. Show how your work benefits those around you.

Numbers speak more than resume buzzwords .

Jot down your top 5 technical abilities. Compare them to the job description. See whether there are any matches.

If there is an overlap, think of past experiences which you can describe on your resume.

If you have trouble coming up with ideas, here are some of the most popular tech talents for engineers:

Crucial hard skills for Spotify engineering specialists:

  • Troubleshooting
  • Agile methodology
  • Growth mindset
  • Able to make risk-informed decisions
  • Network security
  • Cyber security
  • Network infrastructure and architecture design
  • Machine learning
  • Data management
  • Software development
  • System design
  • Data structures
  • Apache Beam

  • Creator Studio
  • Social Science
  • Mathematics
  • Computer Science

  • Customer Insights
  • User research
  • Quantitative research methods

Essential hard skills for Spotify financial experts:

  • SOX and local compliance knowledge

How to impress Spotify hiring managers with your soft skills

These can be harder to assess. But it’s not impossible,

All you have to do is use the same logic you use for hard skills:

  • Link your social abilities to a project
  • Measure the impact of your work
  • Lead your entries with results

Here is how to do it:

Easy, right?

Now all you need is to review the job ad and match your abilities with the requirements.

We’ve gathered some of the most important social talents for Spotify hires:

Fundamental soft skills list for Spotify professionals:

  • Able to give and receive feedback

Depending on the role you’re applying for, you may be required to hold a specific degree. Some of these include:

  • Machine Learning

In an increasingly digitized world, where customer-centric strategies are vital for business success, I am thrilled to apply for the [Job Title] position at HubSpot."

Unhelpful Cover Letter Introduction:

"To Whom it May Concern,

I am applying for the [Job Title] position at HubSpot. I have some experience in marketing and can help your clients grow their businesses."

Relevant Professional Experience

It can be tempting to use the same cover letter for every job. After all, it‘s about your experience, isn’t it? But it's not enough to rephrase the work history in your resume.

Recruiters and hiring managers are looking to fill a specific role, so you need to show how your experience translates to their unique needs.

So, the body of a great cover letter should showcase the specific professional experiences that are relevant to the job you're applying for. Emphasize your accomplishments and skills that directly relate to what the job needs.

To speed up this part of the cover letter writing process, start by creating a list of your transferable skills . Drafting this list can help you quickly focus on the skills to highlight in your cover letter.

Then, use AI tools to summarize job descriptions and narrow in on where your experience and the needs of the role you're applying for overlap. This post is full of useful AI assistant tools if you're new to AI.

Helpful Cover Letter Experience:

“At [Company Name], I had the opportunity to assist a global ecommerce retailer in enhancing their online customer experience. By conducting in-depth market research and customer journey mapping, I identified pain points and areas of improvement in their website navigation and user interface.”

Unhelpful Cover Letter Experience:

“I also worked with an ecommerce retailer to improve the customer experience. We did some surveys and training, and they were happy with the results.”

Useful Examples

To make your cover letter stand out, add specific examples that show how you've solved problems or gotten results in past roles.

Quantify your accomplishments whenever possible, using data to give the reader a clear understanding of your impact.

Helpful Cover Letter Example:

“I lead a team of five content writers while increasing website traffic by 18% year-over-year.”

Unhelpful Cover Letter Example:

“I have a great track record of leadership and achieving fantastic results.”

Research and Company Knowledge

Hiring teams aren‘t hiring anyone with the skills to do the job. They’re hiring a person they'll work alongside at their specific company.

So, to show that you‘re not just looking for any job anywhere, share your knowledge of the company’s industry, values, and culture in your cover letter.

Spend some time on the company website and take notes on what makes this business interesting to you and why you would want to work there.

Then, explain how your skills align with the company's mission and goals and explain how you could add to their chances of success. This will showcase your interest in the company and help them see if you are a good cultural fit.

Helpful Cover Letter Research:

“I was particularly drawn to HubSpot not only for its industry-leading solutions but also for its exceptional company culture. HubSpot's commitment to employee development and fostering a collaborative environment is evident in its recognition as a top workplace consistently. I strongly believe that my passion for continuous learning, self-motivation, and dedication to contributing to a team will make me a valuable asset to HubSpot.”

Unhelpful Cover Letter Research:

“I have been inspired by HubSpot's commitment to inbound marketing and its comprehensive suite of solutions. HubSpot's dedication to providing valuable content and fostering meaningful relationships aligns with my own values and aspirations.”

Clear Writing

Your cover letter needs to pack in a lot of important information. But it's also important that your cover letter is clear and concise.

To accomplish this, use professional but easy-to-understand language. Be sure to remove any grammar or spelling errors and avoid lengthy paragraphs and avoid jargon or overly technical language.

You may also want to use bullet points to make your letter easier to skim. Then, proofread your cover letter for clarity or ask a friend to proofread it for you.

Helpful Cover Letter Writing:

"In addition to my academic accomplishments, I gained valuable practical experience through internships at respected law firms.

Working alongside experienced attorneys, I assisted in providing legal support to clients. This hands-on experience helped me develop a deep understanding of client needs and enhanced my ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts in a straightforward manner."

Unhelpful Cover Letter Writing:

"Furthermore, as a complement to my academic accomplishments, I have garnered invaluable practical experience through internships at esteemed law firms.

Throughout these placements, I actively collaborated with seasoned attorneys to conduct due diligence and furnish clients with comprehensive legal support. Notably, these experiences fostered a profound comprehension of client necessities, whilst honing my legal acumen to articulately convey intricate legal principles within a lucid and concise framework, adhering to applicable precedents and statutes of limitations."

Genuine Interest and Enthusiasm

Find ways to convey your passion for the role and how excited you are to contribute to the company you're applying to. At the same time, make sure your interest feels authentic and outline how it aligns with your career goals.

Your ultimate goal is an enthusiastic letter that feels honest and leaves a lasting positive impression.

Showing excitement in writing doesn't come naturally for everyone. A few tips that can help you boost the genuine enthusiasm in your letter:

  • Record audio of yourself speaking about the role, then use voice-to-text technology to transcribe and add these sections to your letter.
  • Choose your words carefully .
  • Write in active voice.

Helpful Cover Letter Tone:

“I am genuinely enthusiastic about the prospect of joining [Company/Organization Name] as an accountant. My combination of technical proficiency, eagerness to learn, and strong attention to detail make me an ideal candidate for this role. I am confident that my dedication, reliability, and passion for accounting will contribute to the continued success of your organization.”

Unhelpful Cover Letter Tone:

“Honestly, I can hardly contain my excitement when it comes to reconciliations, financial statement analysis, and tax regulations! Engaging in spirited discussions with professors and classmates has allowed me to foster an unbreakable bond with the fascinating world of accounting, and I'm positively bursting with enthusiasm at the prospect of applying my skills in a professional setting.”

Memorable Conclusion

End your cover letter on a strong note. Summarize your top qualifications, restate your interest in the position, and express your interest in future communication.

Then, thank your reader for their time and consideration and include your contact information for easy follow-up.

To make your conclusion memorable, think about what parts of your letter you‘d most like the hiring manager to keep top of mind. Then, consider your word choice and phrasing. If you’re feeling stuck, this list of ways to close an email can help.

Helpful Cover Letter Conclusion:

"Thank you for considering my application. I am excited about the opportunity to further discuss how my qualifications align with the needs of Greenpeace. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience to arrange an interview.

Together, let's make a lasting impact on our planet.

[Your Name]"

Unhelpful Cover Letter Conclusion:

"Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing my qualifications further and how I can contribute to Greenpeace's mission. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience to arrange an interview.

I’d like to add another stage to the job search: experimentation.

In today’s competitive landscape, it’s so easy to feel defeated, less-than-good-enough, or like giving up your job search.

But don’t let the process become so monotonous. Have fun discovering the qualitative data I’ve discussed here — then, have even more by getting creative with your cover letter composition.

I certainly can’t guarantee that every prospective employer will respond positively — or at all — to even the most unique, compelling cover letter. But the one that’s right for you will.

So, get inspired by these examples and templates. Write an incredible cover letter that shows the hiring team at your dream job exactly who you are.

Sample cover letter for Internship position at Spotify

Finance internship.

Dear Spotify team,

I am bachelor student graduating in July 2016 from Maastricht University with major in Finance and Business Strategy. Helping Spotify to maintain and reach its mission of making possible to give people access to music 24/7 will be a great challenge since day one of working for the company. As Daniel Ek once stated, “ People just want to have access to all of the world’s music” and I want to be part of this creation process because since 2000’s more and more people use illegal ways to listen their songs. Thus, bringing Spotify to everyone and everywhere will get the music industry way bigger than it was before!

Leading one of the most successful NGO’s in the world would help me to stay in line with the company’s vision, that of having the music moments everywhere. As a president of Liter of Light Netherlands, an organization that aims to provide sustainable electrical lighting solution to emerging markets, I develop my leadership, teamwork and problem solving skills. Here I had the opportunity to manage a team from day one for different projects. I was responsible to construct financial planning for different activities and build a functional expertise. For example, my team and I organized the biggest Liter of Light workshop in Europe. With my help, my team understood and optimized the opportunities to improve our organization. This benefited us to gain more awareness by making possible the creation of a new community aiming to promote sustainability around the world.

Having an entrepreneurial background will help me to bring new ideas into your daily task and create a new level of customer awareness. As a co-founder of Maastricht Nights, an event company in Limburg area, I always tried to have an hands-on mentality. For example, in order to change the nightlife concept in the area, we brought one of the best DJ-s from Tomorrowland festival and made exclusive nights of promoting different beverage companies. This put us in the leading position of the event organizing companies. Dealing with artists, managers and businesses improved my attention to details, negotiation and business judgment skills. Moreover, being in charge of financial situation, I developed different financial models in order to support a variety of strategic initiatives. This improved my time management skills and made me to be more accurate and precise in my decision making process. For example, investing in a marketing plan we reached more than 300,000 people through radio, TV and online in less than 2 weeks.

Finally, I have a lot of experience with interpersonal communication that would prove helpful in organizational behavior. As a sponsorship coordinator at Maastricht Center of Entrepreneurship I was the liaison for all of the company’s organizations sponsors. Moreover, organizing the biggest entrepreneurial events in south of Netherlands, I found a passion to work with people at different levels developing my analytical and communication skills. Being proactive and open minded helped to succeed in dealing with such a dynamic and complex international environment.

In closing, I believe that my good planning, analytical, teamwork and entrepreneurial skills will help your branch to achieve its objectives.

How to Start a Cover Letter: 30 Creative Opening Sentences Recruiters Will LOVE

Getty Images

Wondering how to start a cover letter? Traditional cover letter wisdom might tell you to begin with something like, “Dear Hiring Manager, I am writing to apply for the marketing manager position with the Thomas Company.” But we say: A cookie cutter cover letter intro feels as outdated as a Hotmail address.

A cover letter is your chance to introduce yourself to a hiring manager—who you are, what you have to offer, and why you want the job—but you have an extremely limited amount of space to do it. If you really want to get noticed, you’ve got to start right off the bat with something that grabs your reader’s attention.

What do we mean? Well, we won’t just tell you, we’ll show you. Keep reading to find tips on how to start a cover letter, along with 30 creative cover letter opening lines and sentence examples.

Still looking for that perfect next role? One of these open jobs on The Muse just might be the one »

5 tips on how to start off a cover letter

Here are a few pointers to guide you as you use our example cover letter openings—we’re getting there, we promise!—to craft your own:

1. Avoid boring or overused openers

Recruiters have read cover letters that start with lines like “I’m excited to apply for the front-end engineering position,” or “Your job posting on The Muse prompted me to…” so often they could wallpaper their homes with them. While those are OK and still acceptable, you'll have a better shot at impressing potential employers with a less cliché opening line.

2. Be lively and personable

People like reading interesting, engaging stuff—the kind that paints a picture, tells a story, and maybe even makes them smile. People like it when you’re human, genuine, and memorable. So figure out something about yourself and your background that relates to the company or position you're interested in, and use that to build a connection.

3. Show what you bring the company

You’ll get more into the details after your opening paragraph, of course. But your cover letter opener should still tell the reader, “This person can do something for us,” rather than, “This job would really help them.”

4. Stick to the point

Your opener, while creative, should still be relevant to the job. Don’t begin by highlighting an unrelated accomplishment or recounting an anecdote that never connects back to why you’re applying for the job. Part of writing an effective cover letter is curating key information that relates to that specific job opportunity and shows the reader that you're a good fit for the role.

5. Don't start with “To Whom It May Concern”

Find an alternative to “ To Whom It May Concern .” Seriously, banish those five words from your cover letter vocabulary forever. Nowadays, this phrase is seen as outdated, overused, and even rude—especially when better options exist.

30 cover letter opening sentence examples

We’ve come up with 30 creative cover letter opening sentence examples and separated them by the method they use to grab the reader’s attention. We don’t recommend copying and pasting because, well, your cover letter should be unique to your stories, background, and interests.

But you can most definitely use these examples to get inspired for your next application. (If you’re looking to see what an entire cover letter might look like, check out our article on the best cover letter examples for every type of job seeker .)

Start with passion

Employers want to hire people who care about what they’re doing. If you start your cover letter off talking about your passions and how they relate to the job, you’re telling the reader that you’ll be an engaged and motivated employee who’s likely to stick around. Plus, it’s a good way to tell the company a bit about who you are as a person right off the bat. Just be honest and realistic.

If truly loving data is wrong, I don’t want to be right. It seems like the rest of the folks at [Analytics Company] feel the same way—and that’s just one of the reasons why I think I’d be the perfect next hire for your sales team.

I’ve been giving my friends and family free style advice since I was 10, and recently decided it’s time I get paid for it. That’s why I couldn’t believe it when I found an open personal stylist position at [Company].

After about three years of trying out different roles at early-stage startups around San Francisco, watching more “ find your passion “ keynotes than I’d like to admit, and assuring my parents that, yes, I actually do have a real job, I’m starting to come to terms with the fact that I’m happiest when I’m doing two things: writing great content and getting it out into the world.

The other day, I took a career assessment , which told me I should be a maritime merchant. I’m not quite sure what that is, but it did get me thinking: A role that combines my skills in business development with my lifelong passion for the ocean would be my absolute dream. Which is how I found this role at Royal Caribbean.

As a kid, I once gave up a day of a family vacation to transport an injured lizard I found by our hotel two hours each way to the nearest animal hospital (and talked my dad into driving me pre-GPS!). When I was a bit older, I found out I could care for animals every day for a living, and I’ve been working toward that goal ever since.

I am constantly checking my LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds—and not because of FOMO. Because I’m someone who wholeheartedly believes in the power of sharing ideas in online communal spaces, and I’m positive that I can help spark meaningful conversations as your next social media assistant.

When I was growing up, I wanted to be one of those people who pretend to be statues on the street. Thankfully, my career goals have become a little more aspirational over the years, but I still love to draw a crowd and entertain the masses—passions that make me the perfect community manager.

Start with admiration

Companies often want to hire people who already know, love, eat, and sleep their brand. What better to kick off your cover letter than a little flattery? Of course, remember when you’re telling a company why you love it to be specific and genuine. Because while everyone likes a compliment, no one likes obvious self-serving B.S.

I pretty much spent my childhood in the cheap seats at Cubs games, snacking on popcorn and cheering on the team with my grandfather. It’s that memory that’s shaped my career—from helping to establish the sports marketing major at my university to leading a college baseball team to an undefeated season as assistant coach—and what led me to apply for this position at the Chicago Cubs.

It was Rudy, my Golden Retriever, who first inspired me to apply to your operations assistant opening—not only have we used your app to find other dogs to play with in our neighborhood, he’s really excited about the prospect of coming to work with me every day. As I learned more about how [Company] is using modern tech to help pets thrive in cities, I couldn’t help but get excited to be part of it, too.

Example 10:

When I was seven, I wanted to be the GEICO gecko when I grew up. I eventually realized that wasn’t an option, but you can imagine my excitement when I came across your events manager position, which would have me working side by side with my favorite company mascot.

Example 11:

When I attended SXSW for the first time last month, I didn’t want to leave. So I decided I shouldn’t—and immediately went to check out job openings at the company.

Example 12:

If I could make the NYC apartment rental process better for just one person, I would feel like the horrors of my recent search would all be worth it. So a customer service role at [Apartment Search Company], where I could do it every day? I can’t think of anything more fulfilling.

Example 13:

[Vacation Rental Company] is synonymous with luxury and escape, known for spaces that inspire. I’ve felt this firsthand every time I’ve stayed at one of your properties—whether I was throwing a bachelorette party or working from home in a new locale—and I would love the chance to contribute to this reputation as your destination manager.

Example 14:

I was an hour out from hosting my first big dinner party when I realized I had forgotten to pick up the white wine. In a panic, I started Googling delivery services, and that’s when I first stumbled across [Delivery Service Company]. I’ve been hooked ever since, so I couldn’t help but get excited by the idea of bringing this amazingness to nervous hosts like me as your next social media and community manager.

Example 15:

Though I’m happily employed as a marketing manager, seeing the job description for your company’s PR director position stopped me in my tracks. I’ve been wearing your glasses for many years, and have always been impressed by the way the company treats its customers, employees, and the community at large.

Example 16:

A group of us IT folks were sitting around talking about our favorite Pacific Northwest companies this morning (coincidentally, over coffee). As you might figure, Starbucks was among the first names that came up. What makes you such a standout among Seattle-based corporations? Here’s the list we compiled:

Start with accomplishments

For any given job, you’re going to be competing with a lot of other job seekers—presumably, a lot of other similarly qualified people. A great way to stand out in your cover letter is to highlight something about yourself—a character trait, an accomplishment, a really impressive skill—that’ll quickly show how you stand out.

Example 17:

My last boss once told me that my phone manner could probably defuse an international hostage situation. I’ve always had a knack for communicating with people—the easygoing and the difficult alike—and I’d love to bring that skill to your open office manager position.

Example 18:

Among my colleagues, I’m known as the one who can pick up the pieces, no matter what amount of you-know-what hits the fan. Which is why I think there’s no one better to fill this customer service leader position.

Example 19:

Last December, I ousted our company’s top salesperson from his spot—and he hasn’t seen it since. Which means, I’m ready for my next big challenge, and the sales manager role at your company is exactly what I’m looking for.

Example 20:

After spending three years managing the internal communications for a 2,000-person company, I could plan a quarterly town hall or draft an interoffice memo in my sleep. What do I want to do next? Put that experience to work as a consultant for executives looking to level up their communications strategy.

Example 21:

While you won’t find the title “community manager” listed on my resume, I’ve actually been bringing people together online and off for three years while running my own blog and series of meetups.

Example 22:

If you’re looking for someone who can follow orders and doesn’t like to rock the boat, I’m probably not the right candidate. But if you need someone who can dig into data, see what’s working (and what’s not), and challenge the status quo, let’s talk.

Example 23:

I recently relocated my family to Texas. As we neared our new home, I noticed with intrigue the many wind turbines dotting the landscape. Suddenly, it hit me: “This is the career for me.” After unloading the moving van, I promptly researched companies in this sector that may benefit most from a skilled field engineer with expert electromechanical skills. And I discovered that [Company] is where I want to be.

Example 24:

You might be wondering what a 15-year veteran of the accounting world is doing applying to an operations role at a food startup. While I agree the shift is a little strange, I know you’re looking for someone who’s equal parts foodie and financial expert, and I think that means I’m your person.

Example 25:

Over the last 10 years, I’ve built my career on one simple principle: Work smarter. I’m the person who looks for inefficient procedures, finds ways to streamline them, and consistently strives to boost the productivity of everyone around me. It’s what’s earned me three promotions in the supply chain department at my current company, and it’s what I know I can do as the new operations analyst for [Company].

Start with humor and creativity

OK, before you read any of these, we have to stamp them with a big, blaring disclaimer: Do your homework before trying anything like this—learn everything you can about the company and the hiring manager to gauge whether or not they’d appreciate some comedic relief or a bit of snark. If it seems like they would, it’s a great way to make them smile (then call you). If they don’t? Try a different approach.

Example 26:

Have you ever had your mom call five times a day asking for a status update on how your job search is going, and then sound incredulous that you haven’t made more progress since the last phone call? That’s my life right now. But I’m hoping that soon my life will revolve around being your full-time social media manager. The good news is, I bring more to the table than just an overbearing mom. Let me tell you more.

Example 27:

Thank you so much for offering me the marketing manager position at [Company]! I wholeheartedly accept. OK, I know we’re not quite there yet. But if we were, here are just a few ideas for what I would do once in the role.

Example 28:

I considered submitting my latest credit card statement as proof of just how much I love online shopping, but I thought a safer approach might be writing this cover letter and describing all the reasons I’m the one who can take [E-Commerce Company]’s business to the next level.

Example 29:

I never thought that accidentally dropping my iPhone out of a second story window would change my life (it’s a funny story—ask me about it). But thanks to my misfortune, I discovered [Phone Repair Company]—and found my dream job as an expansion associate.

Example 30:

If we were playing “Two Truths and a Lie,” I’d say: I’ve exceeded my sales quotas by at least 20% every quarter this year, I once won an international pie-eating contest, and I have an amazing job at [Company]. The last, of course, is the lie. For now.

Frequently asked questions

How do you start off a cover letter.

When unsure how to open a cover letter, a good rule of thumb is to steer clear of clichés or overused opening lines. Instead, start by highlighting a passion or accomplishment relevant to the company or role you're applying for. You could also mention something about the company that caught your attention. Get creative, but keep it professional and make sure your narrative makes sense in that context.

How to start a cover letter greeting?

Try to find the hiring manager's name on LinkedIn or the company's website and address them directly, like “Dear Jane Doe”. If you can't find their name, “Dear Hiring Manager” is a good alternative. Avoid using “To Whom It May Concern” as it sounds outdated and impersonal.

How do I introduce myself in a cover letter?

Introducing yourself in a cover letter is straightforward: just share a bit about yourself. For example, “I'm a copywriter with seven years of experience in online content writing. At least officially. Since my first year of college I've been working on personal projects and keeping a track record of my accomplishments throughout the years.” No need to repeat your name since it's already in your contact information at the beginning of the letter.

How to start a cover letter without a name?

If you don't know the name of the person receiving your cover letter, start with “Dear Hiring Manager” or similar. Other possibilities include: “Dear Hiring Team”, “To the Hiring Team”, “To the Hiring Team”, “Dear Recruiter/Recruiting Team”, or “Dear Hiring Committee” if your industry evaluates cover letters and applications through a board.

Jim Iglesias, Hiring Manager Spotify 150 Greenwich Street New York, NY 10007

Dear Mr. Iglesias,

I agree with the sentiment that music is the universal language of humanity, and I support Spotify’s mission to keep the best music or podcast at anyone’s fingertips. Because of my appetite for unfamiliar problems and challenges, I’m comfortable working independently in a leadership role and analyzing feedback data. With 5 years of experience in cross-functional project management, I’m ready to act collaboratively as the bridge between your music content and product teams.

I have an innate passion for the story behind every company mission and every project. While brainstorming and planning with Etsy’s customer service department, I grew increasingly fascinated by the key role that innovation plays within a product’s lifecycle. I inspired stronger customer relationships and coordinated Etsy’s sales and marketing teams to integrate customer feedback and increase satisfaction rates by 26 percent.

While I thrive in creative environments, I never hesitate to take ownership of the technical aspects of project management as well. Etsy afforded a unique view into customer fulfillment infrastructures and key components like monitoring competitive bids and value engineering for the sake of maintaining profitability. By using Google Analytics to gauge and proactively improve the success of new product features, I boosted daily engagement by 21 percent.

Thinking analytically, communicating proactively, and building trusting relationships that would drive Spotify’s initiative to create more meaningful connections between artists and fans excites me for the future. Music has been core to some of the most special moments in my life, and I am eager to create equally beautiful moments for millions of others by acting as Spotify’s project manager. I’d love to connect with you soon on how I can improve your reach.

Thank you so much for your time,

Jillian Sanders

Emma Johnson Netflix 123 Fictional Lane Los Angeles, CA 90001

Dear Ms. Johnson:

Holding over six years of varied experience in project management and creative professions, I’m eager to deploy my unique skill set at Netflix to magnify the quality of your content. I possess a strong intuition for storytelling, paired with a history of tangible success in the realm of creative project management. Count on me to stimulate innovation and create engaging stories that connect deeply with Netflix’s global audience.

In my most recent role with Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles, CA, my adept application of Asana for project management resulted in a 37% boost in project completion efficiency within 11 months. This, coupled with efficient resource allocation techniques, led to the timely and under-budget delivery of 21 varying-size projects, out of which 18 garnered relatively immense viewership and recognition.

Prior to Paramount Pictures, I worked at Illumination Entertainment, where I used my coding and scripting knowledge to automate recurring project tasks. My efforts helped free up nearly 29% of project time, which was then invested in enhancing other vital areas such as conceptualization and quality assurance.

As a passionate advocate for using digital tools to streamline operations, I implemented a project scheduling system at my position at Bad Robot. This strategic implementation brought forth a substantial reduction of 33% in project overlaps, paving the way for vastly enhanced time management and optimization in the creative process.

Amidst the creative energy at Netflix, my goal is to amalgamate efficient project management with profound foresight to facilitate captivating content. Carrying forward my rich canvas of experiences and success stories, I’m keen on employing these assets to make a significant contribution to your innovative team. Thank you for considering my application. Feel free to reach out for any additional information.

Liam Williams Abbott Laboratories 123 Fictional Lane Chicago, IL 60601

Dear Ms. Marque:

I envisioned belonging at Abbott Laboratories when I read heartwarming employee reviews on Glassdoor. The decisive 71% recommendation rate and an outstanding reputation for growth inspire me to contribute to this trend. Observing Abbott’s commitment to healthcare innovation and your evaluation of every intern as a vital team member aligns with my ambition.

At National Louis University, I learned to implement Python and R in data analysis courses, which proved indispensable during the annual data science competition. My team and I analyzed and interpreted complex data to propose actionable strategies that earned us the second position.

Using tools like Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets for a corporate finance course supplemented my knowledge base and significantly simplified the process of creating a comprehensive financial model. My model was instrumental in predicting a revenue growth rate of 9.8% for a local boutique.

During a computer science group project, we collaborated using Git to manage our code repositories. Our success in using Git and Bitbucket effectively reduced code conflicts by an unprecedented 41% and paved the way for the smooth execution of our application.

I’m enthusiastic about the opportunity to apply the skills cultivated in academia to real-world projects while continuously expanding my knowledge base as a project manager intern at Abbott Laboratories. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Prisha Advani, Hiring Manager Zoom Video Communications 55 Almaden Blvd San Jose, CA 95113

Dear Ms. Advani,

Like countless others across the globe, I experienced difficulties adjusting to a new lifestyle after 2020, but Zoom saved the day with a platform for everything from work-at-home meetings to connecting with my family for occasions that I otherwise would have missed. And thanks to my adaptability, SaaS experience, and PMP certification, I now hope to provide my coordination, organizational, and management skills to help Zoom deliver happiness to other folks as well.

I bring a well-rounded management style to the table, blending traditional methods and technical infrastructures to seamlessly generate status reports, dashboards, and roadmaps to success for every cross-functional project. Some of the earliest experiences that laid the foundation for my current management style included using NodeJS to automate a customer-facing mobile app for StateFarm that helped clickthrough rates climb by 5 percent. I then guided my software development team using Agile to implement APIs that increased reporting speed by 23 percent.

Later, I collaborated with 3 other project managers at Chase to align their marketing strategies more closely with company goals by developing a SaaS product to personalize client experiences. By coordinating cross-functional project plans that unified and optimized the quality and efficiency of Chase’s marketing and software teams, I was able to reach 98 percent of company goals on time and beat client retention expectations by 19 percent. The algorithmic improvements that I initiated continue to bolster the company’s success today.

My work with key stakeholders, clients, and professional peers throughout the initiation and discovery process makes me an ideal candidate to optimize video communications that will empower people to accomplish more. Please contact me for more details on how I can analyze and integrate data to make Zoom’s communications more frictionless and secure than ever.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Timothy Henriksson

  • Connecting on a personal level is a great move! In your technical project manager cover letter, seize the opportunity to offer skills from the job description and tie in background information that aligns you with the company’s mission statement.
  • Never hesitate to research more. The job description should give you a wealth of information—and if the job ad is vague, the company’s website ought to be more lucrative.

Isabelle Brody, Hiring Manager PharmaCord 150 Hilton Dr. Jeffersonville, IN 47130

Dear Ms. Brody:

While studying for my bachelor’s in business administration with a friend, I witnessed firsthand the critical importance of pharmaceutical accessibility as he struggled to find a provider who could find him affordable insulin. Luckily, he finally received the care he needed; now, I am determined to apply my 9 years of corporate and managerial experience, my strategic thinking, and my knack for risk identification and management planning to ensure that other patients can access medications and receive necessary support as well.

As a highly communicative and results-oriented senior project manager, I am at ease with organizing project milestones, implementing carefully strategized plans, and propelling my team to successful outcomes. During my previous time as a project manager at Teachable, I collaborated with 56 instructors to gather feedback on their learning app, which I then translated into high-quality status reports. I then applied this data toward risk identification and mitigation to boost customer satisfaction by 34 percent. Teachable’s client base has since scaled to 12M users thanks to these improved ratings.

The opportunities I have had to lead diverse, bright project teams have enriched my interpersonal skills, empowering me to pilot successful client launches by communicating project scope, budget, and schedule through meetings and one-on-one collaboration. For example, I collaborated with 4 of Stripe’s other project managers, using Waterfall and Agile to lead software development teams through a platform UI revamp that was completed ahead of time and grew sales by $1.1M.

My professional background has developed and honed excellent relationship management skills and the ability to adapt quickly to shifting circumstances, so I can ensure that high-quality results are consistently delivered on time. I thrive in collaborative cultures and look forward to leveraging deep insights as your next senior project manager. Thank you for reviewing my application, and I welcome the chance to prove to you how I can expand PharmaCord’s connections.

  • A relevant anecdote can be effective if you keep it brief. Provide qualifications that relate to the job role, too, as this is your senior project manager cover letter—and not material for your next slam poetry event!
  • Observe the company culture and job description’s tone, and work a similar feel into your letter. Look through the company’s “about” section online for ways to show that you, as a senior project manager, have spent years overcoming obstacles like the very ones they currently face.

How to Write a Cover Letter for a Project Management Job

Coworker gives presentation to another coworker to show how to write a project manager cover letter

While you’re contemplating the above examples and outlining your own project manager cover letter, remember these three tips for an outstanding final piece: Always learn about the company and job you’re applying for, spotlight your best achievements, and polish your tone.

creative spotify cover letter

Write to the project management role and company

So many cover letters get pushed into the abyss for being generic. You don’t want your cover letter to be like everyone elses! So, look for details in the  job description  and “about” sections on the company website that other candidates will overlook. Research the company and role thoroughly, seeking out specific and unique needs that resonate with you.

Project managers are sought after for their ability to bring innovative ideas and prioritized information together for a streamlined game plan, so your cover letter should demonstrate you’ve done this! Research the company’s objectives and use their previous projects as grounds to establish a connection when possible. Look on the company site for specific mission statements or values, and spotlight them when you discuss your qualifications called for by the job ad.

creative spotify cover letter

Share your best project management success

You’ll have limited space to work with since your project management cover letter must remain under a page. But on the flip side, don’t simply repeat the bullet points from your resume, either! Pull one or two of your most incredible accomplishments from your resume and then go beyond the bullet points to show the positive impact you made.

For instance, how did you lead a software development project that wound up increasing sales or customer retention rates? Did you meet an impressively high percentage of your team’s project deadlines—er even exceed expectations? What about the time you collaborated with other project managers on a cross-departmental SaaS project that dramatically boosted company profits?

Find possible opportunities where you can highlight how your experience as a project manager has benefitted others in ways that parallel what the job description and company need.

creative spotify cover letter

Mimic the tone of the company

Many hopeful applicants struggle with polishing their cover letters; you’ve described your accomplishments in-depth with eye-catching details and tailored your skills to the job ad after researching the company—and all in under a page! But what now? Next up, you’ll perfect your cover letter’s tone and resulting overall message.

If you’ve checked all the boxes but still don’t feel like you’ve nailed it, revisit the job listing and company website with fresh eyes. This time, now that you’ve got all your ducks in a row in terms of your qualifications and background, focus on the personality that’s demonstrated in the job description—and especially on the company site. What’s the company culture like?

Study the tone of the organization: Do they sound more corporate, sticking with formal terms and efficient wording? Or do they cultivate a more laid-back atmosphere with a conversational tone and occasional touches of humor?

Focus on the personality that’s demonstrated in the job description—and especially on the company site .

Whatever tone the company uses, revise your cover letter to match it and show that you’re the one who gets it! You may spend a little extra time editing and revising, but it’ll be well worth it to showcase what a stand-out candidate you are.

A Cover Letter Outline for Project Managers

Woman at board with checklist and outline shows how to outline project manager cover letter

Let’s break things down so that your letter will be downright incredible! If you find a  resume outline  helpful, we dare say that this handy outline—complete with examples from the letters you read earlier—will be vital for understanding the nuances and taking your next steps with confidence.

How to start a project manager cover letter

Your contact info:  Include your name, address, phone number, and email address (plus your LinkedIn or other professional social media) if you’re using a cover letter template.

  • Formatting : Leave your name out of your address if you’re using a block format.

Date:  This should reflect the exact submission date of your application materials, e.g., January 5, 2023.

  • Formatting : Write out the full date—it’ll look more professional than the shortened version.

Inside address:  This is just the address of the person receiving your application materials. Always look up and include their name, company and role, and address.

Isabelle Brody, Hiring Manager PharmaCord  150 Hilton Dr. Jeffersonville, IN 47130

  • Formatting : Each part of the address should be on a new line. Remember to double-space between the inside address and greeting, too.

Greeting:  Your greeting, also known as your salutation, is the first impression you’ll make in your cover letter—and first impressions are critical! Hunt down the name of the person you’re writing to (LinkedIn is your friend here), always avoiding generic terms like “Dear Sir/Madam.”

  • Formatting : You can follow your greeting with a comma if the overall company tone is more casual. When in doubt, use a colon.

Dear Mr. Iglesias,  Dear Ms. Brody:

creative spotify cover letter

How to write your project manager cover letter

Body:  The body of your cover letter is the stage for your career highlights and qualifications to shine. Write three to four paragraphs that develop your interest, credentials, and enthusiasm for future contact and discussion.

Opening paragraph:  To put it bluntly, most cover letters are terribly boring and unenthusiastic—and the company will be just as unenthusiastic about a candidate with a bland cover letter, regardless of how qualified they might be. Compare the following examples to see how you can write an eye-catching opening paragraph for your project manager cover letter.

I didn’t really like having to use Zoom at first, but now I like it. I’d like to work for the company too and I’m great at organizing stuff so I’m a great choice.

Why It’s Bad:  Oh no—what was that?! It should go without saying to never reference the company in a negative way—there’s no redemption after that. Besides, this opening paragraph is much too informal and lacks examples of how the candidate is supposedly “great at organizing stuff” that could connect them with the company’s goals.

Why It’s Good:  While the candidate with the sketchy opener probably meant that they disliked having to use Zoom because of its association with the pandemic, this much-better opener is crystal-clear about how Zoom actually helped alleviate stress in a difficult situation. Then, we see a smooth transition into skills and experience that reference Zoom’s mission statement of improving communication.

Paragraphs 2-3:  Now it’s time to put your money where your mouth is! These body paragraphs are meant to substantiate and expound upon the claims made in your opening paragraph. Think of when you revolutionized a company app’s infrastructure or brought various departments together to improve customer feedback—but stick to one achievement per paragraph since you don’t have much room.

Why It’s Good:  This candidate draws compelling parallels between their experience at Etsy and their present potential to further Spotify’s goals. The two companies are quite different, but the applicant finds soft and hard skills coupled with metrics that translate beautifully between the two. The abilities mentioned in this paragraph also reference specific challenges and skills from the job description. Two thumbs up!

Closing paragraph:  Your closing paragraph should summarize the highlights that make you the perfect candidate who’s ready to make the company’s needs and vision your own. Finally, end with a call to action that further emphasizes your interest.

Spotify’s great, I listen to it all the time. As you already saw, I’ve got all kinds of qualifications that would help your company. If you’re interested in more information, just ask.

Why It’s Bad:  Well, this could be worse, but it’s still too informal and vague—not to mention a tad presumptuous. The candidate misses opportunities to work in specifics from the job description or company mission statement. The tone needs work, too: This reads more like a text than the conclusion of a cover letter.

Why It’s Good:  This candidate leads with more relevant skills and an enthusiastic description of how they’ll further Spotify’s goals. Before the call to action, the applicant’s personal connection makes a return appearance and elegantly reinforces their reference to the company’s initiative.

  • Formatting : Single-space your body text, but double-space between paragraphs for better readability.

Signature:  Thank the reader for their time if you didn’t already do so in your closing paragraph. Otherwise, use a brief and professional closing phrase followed by your real name.

  • Formatting : If you’re giving out hard copies of your project manager cover letter, quadruple space after your name, so you can sign by hand in blue/black ink.

Enclosure(s):  This important piece tells the reader that there’s more good stuff to review after your cover letter. Project managers should include their resume, application, and any professional recommendation letters or required certifications.

  • Formatting : Check that you’re using the singular or plural form of “enclosure” correctly depending on the number of materials you attach.

IT Project Manager Resume Template

You can use the same principles we’ve outlined for your cover letter to make a glowing resume, too: Tailor your resume to the job description’s specific skills and key company values. Before you know it, you’ll have hooked a potential employer’s attention—and they won’t forget you anytime soon!

Rely on the project manager job ad to guide your way here. For instance, if the company requires knowledge of project management methodologies like Agile or Lean Six Sigma, try to incorporate this into your cover letter. It also helps to make your career-defining achievement something that was achieved under your leadership, such as restructuring the marketing department or improving customer satisfaction.

Your cover letter gives you a unique chance to highlight why this can be a good thing. Let’s say you’re transitioning from a role where you were part of a team—highlight that you know the day-to-day life of an entry-level employee and that helps you create a project management strategy that aligns with high employee satisfaction and retention. Make sure to lean into other transferable skills, too, such as time management.

Yes! This is a powerful way to prove that you’ve done your homework and that you care about this company in particular. Don’t force it, though; if the company culture or mission doesn’t really resonate with you, try to instead express how your background in project management can bring things like more revenue, efficiency, or customer retention.
