Searching for Books

• Work on developing good keywords and search phrases related to your topic
• Use Library of Congress subject headings in your searching. One of the easiest places to find LCSH is within catalog records in CLIO, by clicking on them, you can explore a range of materials across disciplines that can be useful to you research. There are also lists of official subject headings at the Library of Congress website.
• Remember to incorporate boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT in your searching to refine your results by limiting, broadening, or omitting words or short phrases in your initial searches.

Books in the public domain

Public domain is a concept of copyright law that you find yourself faced with in the course of your work. Various types of materials exist within the public domain. Books published before 1923 specifically are in the public domain, which means that the intellectual property rights (i.e., copyright, trademarks, etc.) for the works have expired. You still need to cite them in your bibliography, but you can sometimes find freely available copies of them on the Internet and here are some resources for materials in the public domain.

• Project Gutenberg Project Gutenberg is a library of over 70,000 free eBooks. Choose among free epub and Kindle eBooks, download them or read them online. You will find the world’s great literature here, with focus on older works for which U.S. copyright has expired.
• Internet Archive Text Archive The Internet Archive offers over 20,000,000 freely downloadable books and texts. There is also a collection of 2.3 million modern eBooks that may be borrowed by anyone with a free archive.org account.

Reviewed notification.

You will receive notification via email when the reviewed copy of your thesis or dissertation is ready for you to view through ScholarWorks. You will then make any necessary edits before submitting the final version back to the Graduate College.

Final Approval

Once your final thesis or dissertation has been submitted to ScholarWorks, it will be reviewed by staff from both the Library and Graduate College. Once final approval has been given, it will be made publicly available on the ScholarWorks site as per your Access Agreement. Embargoed documents will not be available for download until the embargo period has passed.

The Internet houses open access journals befitting a BBA, MBA, or DBA research project.  Please use the following archives to find peer-reviewed journal articles:

AARP State Data Center This site provides statistics and reports on Social Security, Medicare, housing, long-term care, poverty level, caregiver estimates and more on a state-by-state level. American National Election Studies The American National Election Studies website provides survey data on public opinion, voting, and more. Annie E. Casey Foundation Offers data on indicators affecting children and families in the United States, including education, family and community, and well-being. 

BioMed Central Biomed Central is an STM (Science, Technology, and Medicine) publisher with a large portfolio of peer-reviewed open access journals. The journals span all areas of biology, medicine, and health.  Use the search box in the upper right corner to find articles. Bloomsbury Open Archives 2008-2012 Bloomsbury Open offers selected research publications in the humanities and social sciences which are published on open content licenses.

Child Care & Early Education Research Connections Data sets from series and individual studies focusing on child development available for download and online analysis. Child Stats Provides data on children by age group, ethnicity, economic status, and family structure. From the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics. Child Trends Databank Reports on national trends and research on over 100 key indicators of child and youth well-being. Children's Defense Fund Contains extensive list of fact sheets/data with indicators pertaining to children divided by state, including child welfare, early childhood development, education, and youth at risk. Comparative Agendas Project This website collects information on policy changes across countries. Data may be exported into customizable charts. Criminological Highlights An open source Toronto-based publication, produced by academics, faculty, and librarians, which focuses on current criminological research.

Data USA Visualizations of U.S. government data. Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) DARE contains reviews and details of systematic reviews on topics for which a Cochrane review may not yet exist. While DARE doesn't include the full text of the systematic reviews, it does include the citation to the original research. Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) The is an online directory providing access to peer-reviewed journals.  The Directory aims to be comprehensive and cover all open access academic journals that use an appropriate quality control system and is not limited to particular languages or subject areas.

E-Stats E-Stats is the U.S. Census Bureau's Internet site devoted exclusively to "Measuring the Electronic Economy." This site features recent and upcoming releases, information on methodology, and background papers. EDGAR EDGAR, the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system, performs automated collection, validation, indexing, acceptance, and forwarding of submissions by companies and others who are required by law to file forms with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Education Commission of the States Education Commission of the States' database. Browse by education issue, legislation, or search the knowledge base for any topic. ECS partners with education policy leaders to address issues by sharing resources and expertise. Elsevier Open Access Journals All articles in open access journals which are published by Elsevier have undergone peer review and upon acceptance are immediately and permanently free for everyone to read and download. Articles are fully peer reviewed and available via various Creative Commons user licenses. ERIC ERIC provides access to millions of journal articles, reports, and conference papers spanning numerous topics; with an emphasis on educational topics. European Free Trade Association (EFTA) The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an intergovernmental organisation set up for the promotion of free trade and economic integration to the benefit of its four Member States: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland. Eurostat Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union situated in Luxembourg. Its task is to provide the European Union with statistics at European level that enable comparisons between countries and regions.

FAO Document Repository FAO documents and publications, as well as selected non-FAO publications, in electronic format. It includes publications dealing with food, food security, agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, and rural development. FDsys (Federal Digital System) FDsys is the United States government's database of government documents, covering documents and records from all three branches of the federal government. Federal Agency Participation This website, hosted by the United States government works to make federal data accessible to the public.

General Society Survey (NORC) The General Social Survey is a sociological survey designed to track changes in attitudes, practices, and experiences in the United States. GuideStar GuideStar is the world’s largest source of information on nonprofit organizations. It includes financial, contact, mission, and leadership information on every nonprofit registered with the IRS as tax-exempt.

HathiTrust HathiTrust contains both full text and non-full text books. Many books in HathiTrust are not available in Google Books. Health and Environmental Research Online (HERO) The Health and Environmental Research Online (HERO) database contains peer-reviewed scientific literature used by the Environmental Protection Agency to produce assessments. The literature relates to human health and ecological risk topics. Health Services and Sciences Research Resources (HSRR) A database from National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology for research datasets and instruments. Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) HCUP (pronounced "H-CUP") family of health care databases and related software tools and products is made possible by a Federal-State-Industry partnership sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

ICPSR - Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research Datasets ICPSR offers more than 500,000 digital files containing social science research data. Disciplines represented include political science, sociology, demography, economics, history, gerontology, criminal justice, public health, foreign policy, terrorism, health and medical care, early education, education, racial and ethnic minorities, psychology, law, substance abuse and mental health, and more.  ICT Statistics The Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) fosters international cooperation and solidarity in the delivery of technical assistance and in the creation, development, and improvement of telecommunication and ICT equipment and networks in developing countries. ILOSTAT ILO’s central statistics database ILOSTAT provides information for for cross-country statistics on the labour market. The database contains over 100 indicators covering more than 230 countries and economies.

National Bureau of Economic Research Founded in 1920, the National Bureau of Economic Research is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works. The NBER is committed to undertaking and disseminating unbiased economic research among public policymakers, business professionals, and the academic community. National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information.  NCBI also hosts Pubmed, PubBook, and PMC repositories at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/  and http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ National Center for Health Statistics Provides well-organized fact sheets of mental health statistics on topics such as morbidity, ambulatory care visits, and hospital inpatient care. National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect Provides microdata from researchers and national data collections about child abuse and neglect in free data sets for secondary analysis. From Cornell University. National Science Foundation The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense...". The NSF provides federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. NCES Publications Contains publications from the National Center for Education Statistics. NCES is the primary (U.S.) federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education. Neuroscience Information Framework Provides a wide variety of data, materials, and tools on neuroscience topics. Categories include datasets, disease, drugs, and people. NTIS The National Technical Information Service serves as the largest central resource for government-funded scientific, technical, engineering, and business related information available today. NTIS provides businesses, universities, and the public timely access to approximately 3 million publications covering over 350 subject areas.

OALib—Open Journals OALib Journal is a scholarly, peer-reviewed, open access journal covering all subject areas in STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) as well as Social Sciences. The OALib Articles from the OALib Journal are stored in the Open Access Library (OALib). OALib—OMICS Journals Open Access Initiative is committed to make genuine and reliable contributions to the scientific community without restricting the access of published content. This publisher hosts over 700+ leading-edge peer reviewed Open Access Journals and organizes over 3000 International Conferences all over the world. The Public Library of Science (PLOS) The Public Library of Science (PLOS) is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization founded to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. PLOS publishes a suite of influential Open Access journals across all areas of science and medicine.

SciDev.Net SciDev.Net is the world’s leading source of reliable and authoritative news, views and analysis on information about science and technology for global development. Science Direct Science Direct provides an archive of open access leading to approximately 480 scientific, applied science, medical journals, and a number of related books. SDSU Test Finder SDSU Test Finder from San Diego State University. Searchable database (compiled by San Diego State University) for locating known assessment instruments. Semantic Scholar Semantic Scholar is a project developed at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, released in November 2015. It is designed to be a search service for journal articles.  The corpus includes over 10 million papers from computer science and neuroscience, of which 25% fall into the latter category. SpringerOpen SpringerOpen, launched in June 2010, includes Springer’s portfolio of 200+ peer-reviewed fully open access journals across all areas of science.\

UN Data Provides free data access to UN statistical databases through a single entry point. Users can search and download a variety of statistical resources of the UN system. UNESCO Documents Database Collection of publications from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. UNESCO’s mission is to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. UNICEF Offers statistics on a diverse range of subject areas pertaining to children across the world, such as child mortality, child health, early childhood development, and education. United Nations Public Administration Network The United Nations Public Administration Network contains a large e-library that contains a variety of information including surveys and policy information. US Department of Health and Human Services Child welfare information gateway statistics. Links to reports, databases, and other sources of statistics and demographic data on topics, including child and family well-being in the United States, child abuse and neglect, children and youth in foster care, and domestic and international adoption.

World Bank Open Knowledge Repository The World Bank is the largest single source of development knowledge. The World Bank Open Knowledge Repository (OKR) is The World Bank's official open access repository for its research outputs and knowledge products.

Metadata and Related Databases

BASE BASE is one of the world's most voluminous search engines especially for academic open access web resources. BASE provides more than 70 million documents from more than 3,000 sources. You can access the full texts of about 70% of the indexed documents. CiteSeer X CiteSeer is an evolving scientific literature digital library and search engine that has focused primarily on the literature in computer and information science. Digital Commons Network The Digital Commons Network brings together free, full-text scholarly articles from hundreds of universities and colleges worldwide. Curated by university librarians and their supporting institutions, the Network includes a growing collection of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, dissertations, working papers, conference proceedings, and other original scholarly work. OAIster The University of Alberta Libraries created the 2,000,000,000th holding record in WorldCat, marking a major milestone for this unique library resource. OpenDOAR OpenDOAR provides a quality-assured listing of open access repositories around the world. OpenDOAR staff harvest and assign metadata to allow categorisation and analysis to assist the wider use and exploitation of repositories.

Dissertations and Theses

Dissertations and theses cannot replace peer-reviewed articles during research.  However, dissertations and theses can provide in-depth perspectives and impressive lists of references related to a research project.  Please avail yourself to millions of dissertations/theses using the following repositories: NDLTD NDLTD is an Open Access organisation dedicated to making theses and dissertations as widely available as possible, regardless of individual or institutional membership.  The repository current hosts over 4.2 million theses and dissertations. OATD OATD.org aims to be the best possible resource for finding open access graduate theses and dissertations published around the world. Metadata information about the theses) comes from over 1100 colleges, universities, and research institutions. OATD currently indexes over 3 million theses and dissertations. PQDT Open PQDT Open provides the full text of open access dissertations and theses free of charge. You can quickly and easily locate dissertations and theses relevant to your discipline, and view the complete text in PDF format.

Additional Materials

Sometimes a researcher needs historical or up-to-the-minute data not incorporated into scholarly or peer-reviewed literature.  Although such information is freely available on the Internet, the following sites are known to provide quality information spanning various contemporary events and organisations: WUL: The Supreme Court Database The Supreme Court Database is the definitive source for researchers, students, journalists, and citizens interested in the U.S. Supreme Court. The Database contains over two hundred pieces of information about each case decided by the Court between the 1791 and 2016 terms. Examples include the identity of the court whose decision the Supreme Court reviewed, the parties to the suit, the legal provisions considered in the case, and the votes of the Justices. Alanis Business Academy Welcome to Alanis Business Academy!  This channel is dedicated to providing universal access to a quality business education.  You can find lessons on a variety of business topics, including: economics, employee motivation and behaviour, accounting, management, and many more.  (This is one of the best-kept secrets of YouTube.) C-SPAN The C-SPAN Video Library began within the Purdue University School of Liberal Arts in 1987 under the leadership of Dr Robert X. Browning, who sought a way to archive and index the thousands of hours of congressional coverage produced by the network every year. The project quickly became one of the most comprehensive video archives of governmental and political content, and C-SPAN assumed responsibility for the archival operations in July 1998. Digital Public Library of America The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is an all-digital library that aggregates metadata — or information describing an item — and thumbnails for millions of photographs, manuscripts, books, sounds, moving images, and more from libraries, archives, and museums around the United States. DPLA brings together the riches of America’s libraries, archives, and museums, and makes them freely available to the world. Directory of Open Access Books The primary aim of DOAB is to increase discoverability of Open Access books. Academic publishers are invited to provide metadata of their Open Access books to DOAB. Metadata will be harvestable to maximise dissemination, visibility and impact. Aggregators can integrate the records in their commercial services and libraries can integrate the directory into their online catalogues, helping scholars and students to discover the books. The directory is open to all publishers who publish academic, peer reviewed books in Open Access and should contain as many books as possible, provided that these publications are in Open Access and meet academic standards. Harvard Business Review Harvard Business Review is the leading destination for smart management thinking. Through its flagship magazine, books, and digital content and tools published on HBR.org, Harvard Business Review aims to provide professionals around the world with rigorous insights and best practices to help lead themselves and their organizations more effectively and to make a positive impact. RAND Research Reports RAND research is conducted on a uniquely broad front for clients around the globe that include both the public and private sectors. Statistical Abstracts Series Statistical Abstract data present here range from our most recent edition to the historical abstracts compiled throughout the decades. Note that in the Bibliography (or References or Works Cited) section of the Required Sections, Guidelines, and Suggestions page , the following advice is offered.

Required? Yes.

• A bibliography, references, or works cited is required for your thesis or dissertation. Please conform to the standards of leading academic journals in your field.
• As a page heading, use “BIBLIOGRAPHY” (or “REFERENCES” or “WORKS CITED”) in all capital letters, centered on the page. The bibliography should always begin on a new page. Bibliographies may be single-spaced within each entry but should include 24 points of space between entries.

Search for published student projects in our library system

As a student or employee at Aarhus University you can search for student projects from AU, e.g. theses, Master’s theses and bachelor projects from AU. Assignments that the students have given permission for others at AU to search for and read.  

You are also able to search for student projects from Copenhagen University and Roskilde University. 

Note:   To get access to electronic theses etc. from AU, you must: 

1. be logged in to the library system as a student or an employee at AU 

AND   

2. be connected to AUs Eduroam or AUs VPN
