Day 1: reach dalhousie.

  • Reach Dalhousie early in the morning by taking an overnight bus/train from Delhi.
  • Check-in at your hotel. We stayed at Grand View Hotel in Dalhousie. It was just a minute’s walk from where our bus dropped us in Dalhousie.
  • After getting freshen up, we walked up to Mall Road (also called Gandhi Chowk) from our hotel. It took us around 15-20 minutes. Always bustling with activity, Gandhi Chowk is the high street of the town with shopping places, eateries, restaurants, bookstores, bars, and hotels. There are many street food options here that one can enjoy.
  • Visit St. John’s Church which is on Mall Road itself. The architecture of the church is inspired by the Victorian era which adds an aesthetical charm to the place. Lunch at Kwality Restaurant on Mall Road.
  • Visit Panchpulla Waterfall. It is around 3 km from Mall Road of Dalhousie. We walked 3 km to reach Panchpulla which took us more than an hour to reach there. But we enjoyed the views and weather of Dalhousie while walking. It is a touristy location, so you will find it a bit crowded. More than the waterfall, we enjoyed our walk up there. There are several eating options and souvenir shops in the local market. We had already stuffed ourselves too much at the Mall road that we were full even after walking 3 km in the mountains. While on our way back, we hitchhiked to reach Mall Road.
  • We rented a bike from Motorbikevala at Subhash chowk to visit places around Dalhousie.
  • Enjoyed evening activities at Grand View Hotel and had an amazing buffet for Dinner.

You can reach the peak after an easy hike of 2 km. One can also visit a local temple dedicated to Pohlani Devi which is a further 1 km hike from the peak.
  • Visit Kalatop peak. Kalatop is a wildlife sanctuary and you can take your vehicle up to the parking area to reach here. After the parking area, a 5-minute walk will take you to the rows of local rooftop restaurants where one can enjoy the beautiful views of the mountains while having lunch. We enjoyed the sun, views, and delicious crisp hot bread pakoras while sitting at one of the rooftop restaurants.
  • Leave for Khajjiar and stay overnight. We stayed in Hotel Mini Swiss. By the time we reached Khajjiar, it went dark so we took a rest for the day.

Day 3: Sunrise at Khajjiar Park

  • Located about 20 kilometers from Dalhousie, Khajjiar is the favorite of both honeymooners and adventurers. Khajjiar is mainly famous for its park which is a vast expanse of meadows surrounded by Deodar trees. The park is always packed with tourists, so we visited it early morning around 7:00 AM and there was not even a single person in sight during that time. We had it all for ourselves and during this time the mist evaporates from the grass and it is an amazing time to visit this place.
  • After breakfast, we left for Chamba with a short stop at Jot Pass. The drive from Khajjiar to Chamba is beautiful.
  • Visit Laxmi Narayan Temple and stroll around Mall Road of Chamba.
  • If you have extra days in hand, you can visit other attractions in Chamba and stay overnight.
  • We had a train to catch the same day, so we left for Dalhousie.

A Trip to Dalhousie and Khajjiar

Published by Anishaa in category Travel with tag beauty | experience

It was mid- September when we reached Dalhousie. Dalhousie being a hill station was cold and moist at that part of the year but lush and green. We could clearly make out why it was nicknamed the Switzerland of East. This small town set in the lush green Himachal mountains had a colonial past, for it may have reminded the English of their own land which was full of lush green hill stations like this and unlike in the rest of India they experienced at home.

Well I am not here to discuss what the English must have experienced of this small town, I am here to discuss my own experience of staying in this haven of lush green flora.

trip-dalhousie-Khajjiar-1

We were on a tour from school. We reached Switzerland, sorry Dalhousie by bus after travelling 8 hours from Amritsar. We could feel the transition in the surroundings as well as the weather. The mustard farms which are a landmark of Punjab (and also a setting for many films) had gradually risen in height and slowly- slowly (even without our noticing it) we were treading on a spiralling mountainous path from a straight, wide road. From fields the terrace farms came into picture. The weather had become colder and the mirage in Amritsar had been replaced by fog. We climbed the mountain by encircling it and every circle enabled us with a better view. As they say that the view is better on the top of the hill we were experiencing it practically. The population had also reduced. We could now see less of people and more of trees.

The surroundings fascinated us. We were literally hanging out of the windows to click pictures wherein we could store the part of our newly visited to heaven, of which we could be reminded of (and even brag about) later. We were screaming like 1 year olds who would have first learned that flowing water from the mountains is called waterfall and what terrace farming is. We could see practical things of our fifth class social studies. What hills were, what were waterfalls, what were pine trees- known to us only in text became known to our eyes.

We discovered why our childhood short story writer Ruskin Bond loved hills so much. Strong old trees came in the vicinity of our window with the scenery of a river gushing in the valley on one side and small streams of waterfall flowing down from the mountains on the other. We were dangling insanely from one side to the other nervously (and struck with awe of the beauty bestowed on our eyes by the scenery) for we wanted to capture the whole of our eyes view to stay with us for the remainder of our lives. People there were tall, fair and had a strong physique. These traits were necessary to survive (and explore) the place they were living in. It was a long journey of eight hours but we did not feel any tiredness then, for the whole scenery had refreshed our minds and souls. In all the ten directions we could see nothing but scenic beauty. As they say ‘a thing of beauty is a joy forever’ became true for us.

Reached Dalhousie-

Then we reached the hotel. Hotel Dalhousie Heights. It had everything a 3 star hotel could have- spacious rooms, grand banquet and tasty food. Moreover it had a thing which Amritsar one could not offer- great view of the hills. Although we did not feel tired through the journey but the comfortable cot made us sleepy. Amritsar had scorching heat so the coolness of the weather in Dalhousie was a breather. We went shopping in the local Tibetan market after having our tea and snacks. It was a walk on the mountainous tracks to which we Jaipur students weren’t accustomed to. We reached panting to the market after covering what I would describe as a thousand miles journey. But yes the beautiful view and the company of friends, reduced the labor to a minimal fraction.

The marketplace was very serene unlike what we found in the cities like ours. We could see many clearly laid out stalls and in our warm woollens, we began exploring the shops. We bought many things from there for ourselves as well as for our near and dear ones. We saw the big fat red Himachal apples selling there. In spite of the warm clothes we were shivering to which a shopkeeper there said “you should come in December to see what cold is when all the hills are covered by snow and the temperature goes below 0.” I shivered by imagining the hills we were seeing at a distance blanketed by snow and the prospect of the path on which I was walking covered with snow made me feel even colder. I suddenly remembered my visit to the snow park and how I got fever for a couple of days after visiting.

We returned to the hotel singing merrily songs on nature, walking together and friendship. We came back to our room and showed to each other our shopping. Then we had our dinner. After playing games and clicking photos we went to sleep for there was a great day ahead.

To Khajjiar-

Next morning after a sound sleep, I woke up before everybody and pushed the curtains. The window glass was covered by dew. I wiped the dew (the glass was really cold) and saw the beautiful hills with big grey clouds in the background. Then we all got ready to go on for a new expedition. Some seven eight Armadas had been arranged for us to go to Khajjiar. It was to accommodate 7 students and one teacher each. Our group which consisted exactly 7 members claimed one Armada and we started off.

We sang songs on our way on the top of our voice. Even the girl in our group known to be very soft spoken sang on the top of her voice. In spite of our loud serenading we did not miss the scenic view on our way. We captured our moments in the heaven and of our melodious rocking out session. We stopped in the way from where a very distant view could be seen. We even saw snow clad mountains glistening in the sun, at a very large distance from there, where only our eyes could reach but not our feet. We took many memories from there and carried on for our destination.

Khajjiar was a beautiful place. It was a meadow set in between mountains and bordered by strong pine tree forest. It had a hut in between and it set out distinctly but beautifully in the scene. It reminded me of the hut and mountain scenery we used to make in 1st grade. We could do many things there. There were horses for horse riding, amusements to play with and yes a track for those who just wanted to admire the bordering pine forest. We could see parachutes in the air, they were used for paragliding from the top of the hill and drop into the green meadow of Khajjiar. However we could not gather as much courage to go for it and satisfied ourselves with horse riding. We walked and we played on amusements and squeezed as much fun we could. The birds view could be many multicolored dots moving on a green expanse.

Then it was time for us to return. We returned to our Armada and started to return back to our hotel. On the way we could see, clouds that seemed lower than usual. We saw big clouds entering the Dalhousie Public School. It was so beautiful! We joked that the students must be having problems like’ a cloud entered the classroom, we can’t see miss!’ We returned to our hotel room after singing and admiring the clouds, the mountains and the view.

Later that night we had a disco party in the hotel. We took all pains and dressed up to rock the party. It was a great party. All the latest songs were played. We all danced to our hearts’ content. It was dark and we could barely see each other but we knew that each of us was dancing and really enjoying it. (the photos we clicked in the dark came out to have random and usually strange expressions on our faces.) Multicolored lights filled the room. We wanted to party more but the coming day was to be a long day as we had to travel back to Amritsar.

Good bye hills-

The coming day we left the hills and came back to Amritsar. Every moment we spent in the Switzerland of the East came to my mind like water sprinkling from a fountain. We had to leave early and we were going back to the hot Amritsar. We faced mixed emotions. We were awaiting a great new adventure ahead and pining for the beautiful hills we were leaving.

The hills remain etched in my mind. Today whenever I feel low I revisit the time in the hills and a smile comes across my face. This thing of beauty will remain a joy forever for me!

Himachal Pradesh is a beautiful landlocked state in North India . With natural beauty spread all around, it is no less than a paradise on earth. I have been to many places in Himachal Pradesh but still can't have enough of it.

The mountains, the rivers, the waterfalls, lush green meadows, snow-clad peaks, dense forests, religious sites, beautiful flora, and fauna, you name it and Himachal Pradesh has it.

Be it trekking in the cold desert mountain in Spiti Valley or backpacking in Parvati Valley , Himachal Pradesh attracts adventurers from all over India.

One of the most beautiful, family-friendly circuits in Himachal Pradesh is Dalhousie – Chamba – Khajjiar.

If snow-capped mountains and dense forests are your calling, don't forget to check out my posts on Sikkim .

Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba itineraery

So, I am going to present an ideal itinerary for Dalhousie including day trips to Chamba and Khajjiar. This circuit is lush green and breathtakingly beautiful.

So, it is very difficult to squeeze in all the places worth visiting in three days. But still, I have tried to cover the best places to visit in Dalhousie and its neighborhood here.

This is the best 3-day itinerary for Dalhousie.

DAY 1 – Arrive Dalhousie in the morning. Visit nearby places of interest in Dalhousie.

DAY 2 – Reserve whole day to visit Chamba

DAY3 – Go to Khajjiar via Kalatop wildlife sanctuary

But before we embark on this virtual trip, let’s answer some practical questions.

How to reach Dalhousie?

The nearest international airport to Dalhousie is Delhi. From Delhi, you can take a flight to Chandigarh and then proceed to Dalhousie on a cab.

Or you can reach Delhi and from there you can go on a Volvo bus, which runs daily. If you want to travel by train, you can go up to Pathankot, which is the nearest railway station and from there you can hire a cab.

Dalhousie is located 560 km away from Delhi. You can also book a taxi for a scenic road trip from Delhi to Dalhousie.

Where to stay in Dalhousie?

There is no dearth of hotels and resorts in Dalhousie. You can easily get one to fit your budget. Here are some recommedations:

Dalhousie Itinerary Day 1

My first strong recommendation, if you are traveling by road or train, travel overnight to reach Dalhousie early in the morning. This way you will get to utilize whole day for going around Dalhousie. I say so because Dalhousie is such a naturally beautiful and peaceful place that you need to be calm to enjoy the scenery and soak in the beauty and tranquility of the place. You can't rush the things and still hope to enjoy.

Subhash Chowk

essay on trip to khajjiar

So, the day starts with you arriving in Dalhousie. After checking in to your hotel and freshening up, just get out of your hotel and head straight to Subhash Chowk.

It is more of a viewpoint, where you get a breathtaking view of the snow-clad mountains (if it has snowed), dense forests and lush green valley, all at one place. You can click as many selfies and pictures as you want.

The view is truly mesmerizing, and you won't feel like leaving the place. Though it is called a chowk (crossing) it actually has five different roads originating from or crossing here. this place has been named after great freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose.

While at Subhash Chowk, go to iconic St. Francis Church , which is located right at Subhash Chowk. This church was built in the year 1894 in British architectural style. The interesting thing is that the army and civilians joined hands to build this church.

The inside of the church has glass and stonework. St. Francis Church has been maintained so well that nobody can say that this structure is more than 100 years old. It is surrounded by tall Deodar trees. And the ambiance of the church is so peaceful it will rejuvenate your soul.

From Subhash Chowk move to Panjpula. This picnic-cum-adventure spot is about 5km from Subhash Chowk. It is also the source of a stream that flows from the top and is said to supply water to the whole of Dalhousie.

Trek to the top to get a magnificent view. Walk alongside the stream and admire its flow. You can indulge in any of the adventure sports on offer here. Enjoy hot pakoras with steaming coffee.

Enjoy the density of the forest around the place. Buy some souvenirs. And above all, enjoy the snow if it is there (I was lucky that it had snowed only a couple of days earlier, so I could actually walk on the snow).

Gandhi Chowk

Once you are done, move over to Gandhi Chowk. It is the mall road and the main shopping center of Dalhousie. Though it is not a very big market you can see many eateries making local delicacies, which you can enjoy.

There are shops selling local handicrafts and souvenirs and other stuff. Spend some time here and do your shopping. There is a Tibetan market also at this place. Check out my Narkanda Diary also.

Talking of Gandhi Chowk, there are two ways of reaching here. First is, you can walk from Subhash Chowk via Garam Sadak. This is a walk of 1 km but a very enjoyable one. Garam Sadak is called so because it receives sunlight throughout the year and hence remains warm.

This road runs along a deep valley and while you walk the road, you can enjoy the stunning view of the valley as well as hills. From Gandhi Chowk, you can take a cab to go to Panjpula.

Or alternately, you can do it another way around. You can visit Panjpula first and then stop at Gandhi Chowk on your return journey.

Dalhousie Itinerary

Now, you must be tired, so you can go back to your hotel to end the day, and relax.

Dalhousie itinerary Day 2- Visit Chamba

Rock garden.

You can explore Chamba today. The first stop would be the Rock Garden. It is an amazing sight. This is a natural rock garden.

Rocks have themselves fallen after disintegrating from mountains and have formed an attractive pattern here. The place has been developed as a tourist spot and is ideal for taking selfies and clicking pictures.

Chamera lake

Chamera Lake - Itinerary for Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba

Next, you reach Chamera dam and Chamera lake. Chamera dam has been built on the river Ravi, which flows through this place. The dam produces hydroelectricity. The lake has been built by the water collected around the dam.

It is a beautiful place. The lake is surrounded by lush green as well as snow-clad hills and is a very peaceful place. You can enjoy boating here in different types of boats and admire the beauty all around. Spend 2-3 hours at Chamera lake and visit the dam also.

When you drive further up, you start to move along the river Ravi, which is another thrilling site You can stop at a suitable spot for a little while. Enjoy the flow of the river. Spend time on the river bank and take pictures.

Exploring Chamba town

When you near Chamba town, you start to see small but lush green farms on the roadside. You can't help but admire the scenery.

Moving into Chamba town, head straight to Laxminarayan temple in the center of the city, the oldest and the largest temple of Chamba. There are six beautiful idols of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The main idol of Lord Vishnu is made of marble and is a sight in itself. The most amazing thing about the temple is that it always remains pleasant inside irrespective of the weather outside.

Next, go to Himachal emporium in Raja Umed Singh's Rang Mahal . Here you can buy local handicrafts like shawls and handkerchiefs. Its timings are from 10 am to 1 pm and then from 2 pm to 5 pm.

In the Indian terrain, shoes can make or break your travel experiences. Read to know about the best travel shoes in India .

Dalhousie Itinerary Day 3 – explore Khajjiar

This could be the most interesting day of your trip. This could be the most hectic yet most enjoyable day of your trip. I was unfortunate to miss a few of these places as the road was closed due to snowfall during my visit.

Kalatop wildlife sanctuary

You start early and reach Kalatop wildlife sanctuary. Kalatop wildlife sanctuary has a variety of wildlife and verdant grasslands.

Surrounded by snow-covered peaks and tall trees along with pleasing streams, this place offers you the most enchanting experience. Just explore the sanctuary and click pictures. It is very rich in flora and fauna. You will find species like leopard, bear, deer, langur, jackal, barking goral and many beautiful birds.

Ganji Pahadi

From here, the next stop will be Ganji Pahadi. It is again a beautiful place. The name says it all. Ganji means bald and Pahadi means hill. This has been named so because of its landscape. Ganji Pahadi doesn't have any flora on it.

But the brilliance of the place is in the colors it reflects. It offers a panoramic view from the top. During winters it is fully covered in snow making it an offbeat winter wonderland of India .

Khajjiar Meadows - Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba itinerary

Now moving to last but definitely not the least part of the trip. From here you head to Khajjiar. It is rightly called the “Mini Switzerland of India”. This is one place you should not miss for your life.

Unbelievably beautiful landscape, the surroundings, and the whole atmosphere make it a paradise. Khajjiar is a saucer-shaped lush green meadow with a small lake at the center. It is the most picturesque place you could ever see.

It is a sight for eyes to behold. Just go there and throw yourself on the green grass under the blue sky and soak in the beauty and tranquility that is lying all around.

You can enjoy adventure sports also like zorbing and paragliding. There is a small ancient temple here called Khajji Nag temple. Go there and seek blessings. While returning, stop at Jai Jagdambe temple, which has an 84 feet high statue of Lord Shiva.

So, return to your hotel and take rest.

So, this is the best three-day itinerary for Dalhousie-Chamba-Khajjiar and I am sure you will be three most enjoyable days you would ever have. Pin the image below to save it for later.

What an incredibly detailed itinerary! This looks like an absolute beautiful place to explore. I normally go for city destinations, but this would be great for some relaxation. Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like a great itinerary, full of variety. I would love to check out Chamera Lake, although I might need to spend more than 2-3 hours there! It’s so beautiful. The Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary also sounds pretty cool to check out some of the local wildlife!

The itinerary sounds perfect for someone who does not know the area of India very well at all. When visiting Kalatop is it guaranteed that you can see leopards? This is something that I would love to experience. Chamera Lake and Dam looks such a peaceful area and very picturesque with the snowcapped mountains in the distance. Thanks for sharing this great itinerary.

Thanks Jane. I don’t think viewing leopards or tigers in India is guaranteed anywhere.Unlike lions which stay in barren lands, these delusive creatures love to stay in dense forests and are usually hidden from common sight.

This is a nice and varied itinerary about visiting this part of India. I’ve never been to the country, so enjoyed reading about Dalhousie and Chamba. The lake is so pretty, and I’d probably take a few hundred photos if I ever visit. I appreciate the accommodation options given too.

This is a lovey stretch too visit…

Chamera Lake is absolutely gorgeous! And I would love to visit the Kalatop wildlife sanctuary to see all the local wildlife. I can see why Khajjiar is called Mini Switzerland! So funny!

This is a beautiful itinerary of the most picturesque cities of HP. I have not been to any of these. I am planning for Spiti this summer, can these cities be included in Spiti itinerary? Would it be a good idea?

I think it would be a great idea!

I was born in India and did have the opportunity to visit Dalhousie when I was a child and this post brought back loads of memories I must say. I did not visit the other places but would love to go back there and discover Khajjar for sure for its natural beauty. I must admit I quite like the cuisine around this part of India and its rich and perfect suited for the cold weather. The wildlife safari looks good for the kids as well so will add that too. THANKS

Dalhousie looks amazing! I have never been to India but as I read more and more about it, I really want to go. I also love the photo from the lake, that looks like a lovely place to explore. I did not know that there is snow in India.

I have been to both Dalhousie and Khajjiar and loved the places. Though it is over-crowded during peak seasons. I prefer to stay in a secluded place, away from the crowd. This is a good itinerary for people who are planning to visit the places during summer vacation.

Thank you all for your nice comments. There are many more unexplored amazing places to see in India. Visit my website and get to know about these hidden gems of India.

I’m really curious about the adventure sports at Panjpula! I am down for just about any kind of adventure sport, so I feel like I’d want to spend more time there than at the markets/shopping areas. I just visited a hydroelectric waterfall in Peru and found it to be fascinating, so I’d love to visit the dam and learn more about how it generates hydroelectric energy!

Ah, it’s fascinating. I want to do that too.

I was really surprised that there was a Mini Switzerland in India. I didn’t imagine the landscape would look like that. Thanks for the very detailed itinerary. I am planning a trip to India in the next two years so this will be very helpful.

Glad to be of help!

I am not very familiar with India – but Himachal Pradesh sounds like a great place to visit. The town of Khajjiar is awesome – love that it is a mini-Switzerland of India! I would love to go there and just relax in the grass taking it all in!

Thank you. And thanks to the guest writer.

Unfortunately I don’t know a lot about India yet since I haven’t been able to visit, so I was happy that you described so well where in India this place is. I love the scenery and it looks like an awesome place to do some outdoors activities. It is interesting to see that they have those buildings reminding of Switzerland.

I love hill stations and therefore would love to visit Dalhousie, Khajjiar, and Chamba. But I was always confused about where to start and thanks to you for sharing a detailed itinerary as it is very helpful. Khajjiar really looks like Switzerland and really an amazing spot.

Dalhousie looks incredible. We were in Dharmshala last year and heard many wonderful things about it from other travellers too. Would love to include it on our next trip to India

I love the idea of driving from Delhi to Dalhousie so I could take in the beautiful scenery on the way. And then again on foot at Garam Sadak to walk the road along the valley for more mountain scenes. Chamera Lake looks absolutely picture perfect, too! You’ve offered some great suggestions that suit this “slow travel” gal. Thank you!

Thank you for the detailed blog, it really is very helpful. we are visiting with family and an infant during the last 3 days of the november month. we expect some snow or it is going to be dry and cold winter weather.

This post brought back one of my fondest childhood memories of taking a road trip with my parents and grandparents during the summer break to Dalhousie, Khajiiar, Chamba and then heading off to Dharamshala. We had stayed overnight in Dalhousie – can still recall that feeling of waking up to the scent of fresh pine and view of misty mountains beyond. Loved the surrounding views from the lush meadow in Khajiiar.

Thanks Aditi. I am yet to visit this beautiful place. Thanks to our guest author for the guide.

I would have loved the article if you should have also mentioned where I can have a relaxing stay in Dalhousie. Except for that, you have almost mentioned everything that a person requires before making their trip to Dalhousie, Khajjiar, & Chamba.

The mountain views look amazing! India’s mountain ranges look so breathtakingly green!

Khajjiar, often hailed as the "Mini Switzerland of India," enchants visitors with its breathtaking landscapes and pristine beauty. Picture-perfect panoramas unfold before you, each frame more enchanting than the last. If you want to step into a realm where time slows and tranquillity reigns supreme, Khajjiar is your place. From sitting and enjoying a hot cup of tea while watching the sunrise in the chilly weather to embracing the cold waters of Khajjiar Lake, it provides you with unforgettable pictures of majestic and blissful landscapes. Whether you're a novice explorer or a seasoned adventurer, Khajjiar offers an array of activities to ignite your spirit of discovery.

Here's a 3-day guide for you to make the best out of your trip to Khajjiar.

Morning

Spend your first morning stepping into the embrace of Khajjiar, where each sunrise paints a masterpiece across the canvas of the sky. From the window of your sanctuary, behold the majesty of nature unfurling before you. Have a hearty breakfast before returning to your room, where the true luxury lies. Sink into the plush embrace of your bed, wrapped in the soft embrace of blankets where warmth and comfort await like an old friend. Let yourself be enchanted by the magic surrounding you, and let each experience be a testament to the wonder of this mountain paradise.

Have a delicious lunch before starting your trip to the infamous Khajjiar Lake. Be lost in the beauty of this lake at the heart of Khajjiar, surrounded by pine trees and majestic mountains. Live your imagination as you're captivated by the lush greenery, mystic winds and chilly weather. Watch as your dreams of visiting heavenly places finally come true. Let the chilly waters caress your fingertips, sending tingles of icy delight through your veins, each touch weirdly awakening a longing for more. In this moment, surrender to the spectacular dance of contrasts, where the icy embrace of the water meets the warmth of your soul.

Evening

Spend your evening on a spiritual dive through the Khajji Nag temple. Located close to the Khajjiar lake, this temple stands decked with a golden dome and spire, which is also known as the "Golden Devi Temple." Dating back to the 21st century AD, the shrine here is dedicated to Naga—the lord of the serpents. If you enjoy an excellent spiritual and mythological story, this place is a must-visit. Moreover, this temple displays a spectacular blend of the Hindu and mughal styles of architecture.

Leave early in the morning to catch the sunrise at Dainkund Peak. Located only 49 minutes from Khajjiar, this hilltop view is a must-see. Pack your breakfast and lunch from your hotel and embark on your journey to begin the day with a mesmerising sunrise view. Check the weather report for a clear sky to get a better view before doing so. Once there, experience a hypnotic sunrise that leaves you longing at the sky long after the magic has passed. Savour a delightful breakfast atop the peak, where every bite is imbued with the essence of the mountains, setting a harmonious tone for the day ahead.

Afternoon

Spend the rest of your morning and the afternoon exploring the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. Nestled in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, this sanctuary spans a lush 30.69 sq. km, encompassing Kalatop and Khajjiar. As you wander through the dense Deodar and fir forests, which stretch over 19.63 sq. km, immerse yourself in the serene beauty and breathe in the crisp, fresh air.

Drool at the varied spectrum of flora and fauna that call this sanctuary home. Look for the vibrant birdlife and elusive wildlife that roam these pristine woods, each sighting adding a touch of magic to your adventure.

Once tired from walking around, settle down for a hearty picnic lunch. Choose a scenic spot, perhaps by the shade of a grand Deodar, and let the mystery of the forest enhance your meal. Savour the flavours while soaking in the picturesque surroundings, letting the calming vibes of the sanctuary continue to surprise you.

Return to your hotel and spend your evening enjoying the local markets. Roam around the streets of Khajjiar, looking around for the perfect souvenir to remember this trip by. Consider cherishing a hearty dinner at one of the local eateries to bring the pristine end to this eventful day.

Day 3

Wake up early in the morning and get ready for a long day filled with scenic views. Pack some food since you'll be travelling a lot today. To start your day, take a road trip to the famous Panchpula waterfall. Shrouded by a green blanket of pine and Deodar trees and enfolding refreshing water streams, the picturesque Panchpula has always been among the favourite tourist spots. Spend a memorable time surrounded by streams that are said to contain medicinal properties that are helpful in healing skin diseases.

After Panchpula, leave for Chamba to spend an afternoon exploring. Once there, make sure to visit the Chamba palace, the Bhuri Singh Museum, and the Laxmi Narayana temple. Immerse yourself in the captivating tales of bygone eras as you explore these venerable historical monuments, each whispering secrets of centuries past, beckoning you into a world of wonder and awe.

Then, let your taste buds embark on a journey of pure delight as you indulge in a soulful lunch at a quaint local eatery, where every bite is a symphony of flavours, a tribute to the region's culinary heritage.

Retreat to your hotel for one final evening in this enchanting haven often likened to "Mini Switzerland". Let the memories of this majestic landscape weave themselves into the fabric of your soul as you bid farewell to this slice of paradise beneath the stars. Click mental pictures of the serene landscapes and make mental notes of the mist smell of the mountains to take back home with you. Make a last roundtrip to the local markets to finish any remaining shopping wishes. End your trip with a hearty dinner and a good night's rest.

Getting There

An exhilarating road trip from Delhi to Khajjiar and Dalhousie crossing Jot Pass

In a thousand ages of the Gods, I could not tell thee of the glories of the Himalayas – The Puranas (Vedic Scrptures)

Sometimes, my love for Himalayan Roads even amazes me. For me, Himalaya is the frontier where I go to test myself and feel humbled. Amidst the glory of Himalaya, I seek myself and after every trip, I come back being a better human. Self driving on Himalayan roads gives me much required kick that fuels my everyday life.

So, loaded with ever throbbing desire to drive across Himalaya, this time we went to explore Dalhousie and Khajjiar side of Himachal Pradesh. After crossing Jalori Pass, this time we had in mind the Jot Pass in Chamba district which is a moderate pass at around 8000 feet from average sea level.

The route from Delhi to Khajjiar via Dalhousie

We had precisely three days in our hands and wanted to make most out of it. As usual, it was an unplanned trip and only after reaching Murthal for morning breakfast, we finalized my route.

Route

Complete Route – Delhi Dalhousie – Khajjiar – Amritsar -Delhi

Day one – Road Trip Delhi to Dalhousie

The route : Delhi – Ambala – Nangal  – Noorpur  – Chowari –  Hunera – Dalhousie

Dalhausie-7909

Being a lover of Himalayan roads for their curves and the challenges they pose, I was expecting some real roads to enjoy self driving. However, till Chowari, it was a dull drive for me as till then I was driving on plain road. At Chowari, we took a deliberate detour towards Dalhousie  and that offered us some good Himalya n views and above all I could finally drive on road with Himalayan characteristics.

Dalhousie to Khajjiar and Amitsar

Highlights from our Road Trip to Khajjiar and Jot Pass

Self drive on the loop road – chowari – dalhousie – khajjiar – jot pass – chowari.

Chowari Loop

The above image of the route is self explanatory. This one stretch actually made my trip a thrilling one because such roads gives me more he reason to explore Himalaya through self drive road trips. After a day long drive in plains, my adventure thirsty soul wanted some real thrill and hence we reached Chowari to experience this detour.

On day one, the Himalayan views and golden hour vistas justified our decision.

Dalhausie-7914

Exploring famous Kala Top Forest Rest House

On day two, our first stop was Kala Top which means a Black or dark  peak. It got its name from the fact that even sunlight cannot reach this place as it is thickly surrounded by dense jungle of deodar trees. Our main reason to visit Kala Top was to feel and experience forest rest house at Kala Top.

Built by Britishers in 1925, this Forest guest housed is beautifully nestled amidst Kala Top Wild Life Sanctuary. When driving from Dalhousie to Khajjiar, one needs to take a 3KM detour from Lakkadmandi to reach this Rest House. This beautiful british era building is situated at an altitude of 8000 feet from sea level.

Kalatop RFH

It became famous in mid nineties when super hit Bollywood movie 1942- A Love Story was filmed here and in recent years this place used extensively in Hindi Bollywood movie – Lootera also.

It has a nice open air canteen also where yo can have simple home made Indian delicacies. My one year old son Shivansh had some great time in this rest house which is very well maintained by the Forest Department.

Dalhausie-0094

With its charm, this place took our heart away and we decided to stay at this heritage property someday.

The Alpine Story of Khajjiar – The Mini Switzerland

The high point of the road trip was reaching Khajjiar where a dying lake, green meadow and surrounding forest tell an Alpine story of Himalaya. In 1992, Mr.Blazer, The Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland in India brought Khajjiar on the world tourism map by calling it “Mini Switzerland” for its topographical resemblance with Switzerland.

The unique ecosystem consisting of Lake, Pesture field and forest presents a heartwarming scene before eyes which was first of its kind of experience for us. We have never seen such a huge patch of natural greenery at one place. We were overwhelmed to be there and by seeing people from all walks of life enjoying a day out in nature. Khajjiar with its topographical charm leaves you spellbound and force you to feel amused while taking a long stroll through this verdant landscape which is a protected peace of land at 6400 ft from sea level.

For Shivansh, it was a perfect playing ground and he took full advantage of his new found freedom amidst nature.

Khajjiar HP

Crossing Jot Pass

Jot pass is an important pass in Chamba Districts which takes you to Khajjiar and further to Chamba from Pathankot. It is approximate 800 feet from Sea level and famous for mountain views and snow fall.

We crossed this on day two while tripping from Khajjiar to Amritsar. As the month was August, we literally drove through clouds and enjoyed every bit of our drive.

Jot Pass

Each road trip to Himalaya teaches me life’s lesson and keep me on toes physically and mentally. Himalaya tests you mentally and physically before you can cherish its vast beauty. Its like a father who makes you to behave properly and stay in discipline and when time is appropriate surprises you with something that you sought for.

After this Himalayan road trip to Khajjiar and crossing Jot Pass, now I aim to experience Sach Pass someday which is claimed to be father of all Himalayan Passes.

  • A Trip to Dalhousie & Khajjiar-: You will fall in love with it

We  started form Gurgaon to Dalhousie, which is blessed with enchanting beauty, a certain tranquility of its ambiance and the serenity and sacredness of its culture.  As we started our Journey in the afternoon so we plan for night stay at Chandigarh. we reached Chandigarh at 7.00 P.M in the evening so we were having enough time to visit the famous Mansa devi temple. its an awesome place with such a peace. On the next day we started early in the morning for our journey towards Dalhousie. it took almost 7hr to reach to Dalhousie from Chandigarh. The road is pretty gud if you follow the hoshiarpur-Pathankot-Dalhousie route.

We reached Dalhousie at 3.00 PM & straight went to our guest house to have some rest. The location of the guest house was awesome & it was surrounded by thick trees & was on the tip of the mountain. The weather was soothing with cool healthy air which you will never experiance in Gurgaon.

It is built on and around five hills. The roads of Dalhousie are famous for its shape as 8.The roads surrounding the two adjacent hills joints, to form an 8. The curving road and the jawdropping cliff on one side of the road did nothing to assuage our troubled hearts. Thick forests of pine and deodar covered the hill slopes with the trunks of the trees easily a few feet wide.

Our guest house was near to Subash Chowk & we decided to visit the St. Francis Church at Subhash Chowk that evening. One will love the architectural beauty of the church. it’s a very old church built by the English men early 19th century.

Then we decided to walk till Gandhi chowk which was around 2 Km. we loved each & every moment of the walk which was full of ecstatic natural beauty. I have never seen such a beautiful mountain views in my life before.

essay on trip to khajjiar

we wake up at around 6.00 in the morning & decide to just have a gud stroll in the  morning to adore the natural beauty. we walked around 1 Km on the 8 when we saw one young child coming from the village which was far away in the deep in the mountain. we were very impressed with the young child & decided to track that dangerous route till his village.  There was no pathway for the complete track so it was full of danger & excitement.

essay on trip to khajjiar

we met many of the villager in between & came to know that that no medical facility was available in the village. One of the women who was very ill also needs to track that dangerous route in order to consult the doctor. finally we reached the village after 1 hr of difficult tracking . The name of the village was Barrera. We were feeling the need of having tea but too our surprise no shops were available in the village. One of the villager invited us to have tea at his home.

essay on trip to khajjiar

His home was a typical a Himachali home built with wood & kullu slates. The villager also informed us that we can further track down this mountain to reach the valley for the famous lakkar baba temple. We decided to track till that place. One of the villager was also going to the same place so we decided to follow him. we thanked the villager for such a wonderful gesture & hospitality.

The route was full of Danger & natural beauty. The track was 5Km from the village & took 1hr to reach the temple. we gave our offering at the temple & decided to move on. We cam to know further 1Km downwards we will touch the Highway & will get the bus for Dalhousie. We reached the highway & was surprised to know that Dalhousie is 16Km from this place. we came back to Dalhousie by bus & had a gr8 Supper at the SBI Guest House.

essay on trip to khajjiar

Dalhousie quietly ensconced amidst pine trees with a charming background of the snow clad Himalaya, has a breathtaking scenic beauty.

essay on trip to khajjiar

We decided to explore nearby places and drove towards “Panchpula”.Panchpula, a beautiful spot, is barely 3 kms. from G.P.O. On the way to Panchpula is Satdhara springs gurgling with refreshing water, believed to contain some medicinal properties. Although Road towards Panchpula is very narrow. After 20 minutes drive and we reached Panchpula the main source of water supply to Dalhousie. There is an elegant monument erected at Panchpula where several streams meet at one point. From Punj pulla there are also a few hiking trails. If you are planning to go for hiking, make sure you are well equipped for it. The pines, deodhars, oaks, tiny mountain flowers, the jungle babbler, the undulating hills, the tree line, soothing breezes, all perfectly. I realize, my furiously beating heart has settled to a trance at this discovery. We promised to cover that next time as we have already tracked 10Kms yesterday.

We planned to visit Khaijjiar and drove towards Gandhi Chowk from Panchpulla  where another road climbs up towards Lakkadmandi/Khaijjjiar (as a small signboard guided us). After driving for 30 mintues we noticed an intersection but missed another small signboard (which ofcourse said “Khajjiar) .  At lakkadmandi we decided to visit the wild life sanctuary before going towards khajjair. As we have the restricted time so we planned to visit the sanctuary by car only but soon we realized that it was a big mistake. The route was very narrow & full of dense forest. One will love to walk on such track surrounded with ecstatic natural beauty. we decided to track it & parked our car at one side of the road. A very thick and dark forest crowns the hilltop and perhaps that is why the place has derived its name as Kalatop which literally means a black cap. I will recommend not missing this place, you will enjoy a lot if you can manage to go on feet. We shot a lot of photographs here. Pheasants and Monal and various other birds can be frequently seen in the place. Leopards, black bear are also found by travelers occasionally, but we were not able to see anything.

essay on trip to khajjiar

One can stay at kalatop as the Forest Guest house is open for the private individuals also. I would recommend one should stay atleast one nyt at Kalatop to experiance the night views of the forest.

Then we started our journey towards Khajjiar. It i s the most exotic and scenic beauty place around 22 Km from Dalhousie. Khajjiar is officially proclaimed the mini-Switzerland ofIndia. At an altitude of 6450 ft, this saucer shaped green meadow, ringed by Devadar Trees has a lake in the middle complete with floating island. I liked horseback riding and strolling. It’s the best place to spend more time as compare to the other places. We spent around 2 hrs & enjoyed Horse riding there.

essay on trip to khajjiar

At around 5 p.M we started our journey back to chandigarh.  we took another route which goes directly to pathankot & is shorter in distance. The road was Ok but it was too narrow so only a experiance driver should follow that path. The traffic at this road is very less  & the scenic beauty is ultimate along the whole route which compensate for the narrow road.

essay on trip to khajjiar

At midnight we reached at chandigarh & has a great sleep . next day we left for new delhi & has a great drive till delhi.

It was one of the most memorable trip i have ever been too.

Interesting detours Gaurav. Good to read about your excursion to Barrera, route really looked dangerous. I have realized that the most-lasting memories are of the places one walks. So, I am sure that it would be one thing you will remember for a long time.

Interesting to read about Sardar Ajit Singh as well. We owe our freedom, love and respect to these great martyrs.

A breezy read supported by some beautiful pictures.

Your post reminded me of our first trip to Dalhousie way back in September, 1975. We boarded a bus from Pathankot around 11.30 A.M. and were hoping to reach there by 3 P.M. But destiny plays its own games. Enroute there was a landslide a few feet ahead of us. By the time the driver decided to take an alternative route, there was another landslide, just close to the rear of the bus. We were almost stranded, with no signs of clearance of the blockades. Night was approaching fast and with small children crying for food, we felt miserable. At a distance, we saw a small light and going through the slippery route, we somehow reached the hut. We explained the things to the householder, who was a little reluctant, but thanks to his wife’s generosity, who quickly prepared some Daal- Rice and provided milk for the children.

Next morning, the army brigade stationed nearby, constructed a temporary bridge that allowed the traffic to pass through and we reached Dalhousie next morning around lunch time.

Incidentally, whenever someone mentions about Khajjiar, I am reminded of a short story by Dr. Kartar Singh Duggal by the same title. If you get hold of it, please do read it.

Welcome aboard and do keep on sharing your experiences.

I will for sure read the story by Dr. Kartar Singh.

Hi, Can we use 18 seater bus for local sight seen of Dalhousie and khajjiar.. Beacuse somebody told me that it will be difficult to travel with a 18 seater Bus

I was there long time back and I would guess that 18 seater should be OK to manoeuvre the roads there.

I am planning a trip to Dalhousie next week by car from Delhi. Need some advise:

1. Since I don’t want to reach Dalhousie late, I am planning to go via Amritsar and spend a night there. I know Amritsar is out of the way but I thought it would be an opportunity for me to visit Golden Temple at night. My questions is around the road conditions between Amritsar and Dalhousie. How is the road, traffic and approx how many hours does it take to reach Dalhousie.

2. Any recommendations for the route between Delhi to Amritsar. Is there any possibility of going to Wagah Border if I start from Delhi between 5-6 am. Is Wagah Border recommended next week considering I am with kids (4 yrs old).

3. Any recommended hotel for stay and any special place for Dinner and Amritsar. I want to try the Amritsary delicacy.

4. How is the road between Dalhousie and Khajjar. What are the other recommended attractions around Dalhousie.

Thanks in advance. NG

' src=

Dear NG The road is good if you take AMR-Pathankot-Dalhousie route. It will take approx. 5 hrs. But as you approach Dalhousie, be prepared for winding roads which may cause nausea. Distance between Dalhousie to Khajjiar is around 24 kms. Give yourself 2 days in Amritsar. There are many options for staying in and around golden temple. Visit golden temple, wagah border, jalianwala bagh, Ranjit singh museum. Another day to gorge on delicacies, lassi at Surjan singh, kesar da dhaba, phirni at Ahuja sweets, paneer bhurji at Pyare lal, chandrakala at Khubi ram sweets, jalebis at Gurdas ram and tawa chicken at Surji food plaza on Lawrence road.

Thanks Daniel for the details.. much appreciated.

I won’t be able to do all suggested in Amritsar but would try as much possible..

Thanks again.

An unexpected love story called Khajjiar...

Photo of Pallavi

I rose in love and touched the alchemist, To never be the same again. Alone I traversed into the unknown, Discovered on Earth that there is heaven. The paradise of adventure and exploration New places, strange faces reflecting my soul. Now I see how the moth embraces its annihilation, The flame so bright dispelling all inhibition. How can one not fly into that brilliant horizon, If only for a moment to taste that heady abandon.

I set out on 19th April 2016 oblivious to the events that were going to change my life forever. I knew I was doing something special as this was my first solo road trip with “time out” as the end goal. And I was looking forward to going to Khajjiar and staying at the homestay I had been told about but I was unaware of the ripples that were going to shake the world as I knew it.

The grass and the wild flowers It began to dawn on me as we started our ascent into the hills – the rolling mountains, the winding road, the air beginning to clear and develop a cold nip – it was a cocktail that I wanted to savour every sip off. As we crossed Dalhousie and entered Khajjiar I knew there was no going back – my heart was loud and clear in its declaration of love and commitment to doing this over and over again. And it was with this soaring heart that I reached the Deodar Manor – a magical homestay a little above the Khajjiar meadow. As I got out of the car and emerged onto the driveway of the estate – the view had my smile stretch beyond what I thought possible. The stunning sight of the Pir Panjal range and the contrasting hues of green and brown as the hills descended into the valley took my breath away. The living green of the trees and grass dotted by the yellow and white heads of the brave little wild flowers was out of an enchanted forest. It felt like no lung full of that fresh cold air or ear full of the bird calls and the sound of the wind through the trees could ever be enough. I discovered that the mountains have a strange effect on me – my eyes just don’t tire of taking in the view.

Night falling, view from the sit out area

And this was only the beginning of the magic that was to unfold. I spent hours over the next few days under the sun and moon – my books forgotten as my senses were completely intoxicated by the sight of the ever changing view – mountains and terraced hills and valley and trees and butterflies and paragliders and flowers and sunrises and sunsets and moon phases and stars.

Roger the 11 month Doberman and I struck up a special friendship as he barked territorial warnings at approaching monkeys, shared his attachment to the people he loves and listened with me to the birds and the wind and the murmurs of silence. Spending time with him involved a fair bit of scratching the back of his ears, rubbing the skin around his neck, touching noses and head pats - all of which I happily did while soaking in the beauty around and within - his little domain offered the best view on the property. My heart overflowed with joy and peace and I felt myself flowing with every moment – whether it was chatting with others at the homestay, walking around or sitting in silence every moment contained a lifetime of completeness.

And then there was the walking through the woods – a dream come true – the trails and the paths through the ancient Deodar trees and over the greenest - green grass that would suddenly emerge into clearings and meadows and other thrilling surprises. It was out of a fairytale and other stories I have grown up reading and wishing to experience. Since I was alone I could do all the exploring at my own pace, there was no one I needed to catch up with and no guilt of slowing someone down. I surprised myself at my body’s ability to walk for hours both up and downhill over all kinds of terrain that usually pose a challenge for me. On one of my walks I met siblings returning home from school who took it upon themselves to be my guides and took me on a trail up to their home which had a view of apple orchards on one side and the mountains dropping steeply into a valley with the River Ravi like a shiny aquamarine ribbon snaking its way across, below. Despite it being a misty day the beauty of this image is etched in my mind and no photograph can do it justice.

There is no end to the description of what my senses were exposed to over those three days - some that evoked too personal a response to even share. More than what I saw was what I felt – a sense of belonging to those mountains and the old wise trees, the fresh grass and the new flowers. A sense that this was home for me and that I needed to come back one day never to leave again. I have been to the hills before and since then, I have been lucky to travel to several parts of the world on solo trips but never before did I feel what I felt here. A sense of freedom, of timelessness, of flowing into the joy within and of belonging. It was heartbreaking when I had to tear myself away from Khajjiar and while it may sound dramatic – it is only in the knowing that I can and will go back that I could leave. I have read and heard accounts of people saying they fell in love with such and such place and left their existing worlds behind to build new lives there – and I would wonder why they could not just visit and keep visiting. This visit to Khajjiar made me understand.

As I wrote to one of my friends as I travelled from Jammu to Srinagar through the breathtaking vistas of Patnitop and Kashmir - “While I appreciate the beauty all around me my mind keeps going back to Khajjiar - the mountains and the trees, the walks and the clearing. This morning I stopped to admire the way the light was dancing on the leaves of the trees I was passing and once more an image of something I had seen in the clearing popped back to mind... And that's when I realised... You've been in love so I'm sure you know the feeling of how everything one does reminds one of one's sweetheart especially when one is away... Well this is what this is... I am in love and while these places are also wonderful - they only serve to remind me of the place my heart belongs to right now.

I do not know how this story ends – will I go back or not, will it be as enchanting or have I over romanticized it. This may be the beginning of many new loves for me or this may be the happy ending that I eventually settle down to. Whatever the future may hold I cannot be what I was before I did this trip. The only way to describe it in words is that doing this solo road trip, staying in this homestay and exploring that land opened a space for me – a space of fearlessness and curiosity. I always loved travel but from what was earlier an option this trip has made exploration a necessity. Seeing new places and developing a different sense of viewing the world is now a part of who I am and I am already ready with my next adventure.

I cannot complete this piece without mentioning the people I met who made this even more special. Sapna and Raju (Nitin) who were the cook and caretaker respectively who spoilt me silly and when I left told me it was like losing one of their own. Theirs is an unexpected friendship and we are still in touch through Facebook and the mobile world -  they often send me pictures of the table laid out with goodies or Roger or selfies and urge me to come back. Shailja and Krish Sharma – my little guides who tell me they miss me and send me pictures of their latest adventures – Shailja all of 10 wants to become a doctor when she grows up and is looking forward to going to boarding school in Dalhousie next year. Other guests who showed up at the manor with strange connections to my world – one couple that stays 15 minutes away from home in Gurgaon and we continue to be in touch. Last but certainly not the least Hanut and his mother - auntie who baked a cake for my birthday, whom I had long chats with on plus size modelling and chicken recipes, whom I admire for her strength and practicality and who surprised me with the affection she showed to someone who was just a guest like myriads of others who come and go. And then Hanut – hospitable, warm, kind, funny, knowledgeable, adventurous, free spirited, disarmingly honest and a good combination of intelligent and brave for having chosen this life. He drew me out despite my reticence and disarmed me by getting me talking about almost everything I am passionate about – a mean feat for such a short time spent together. By the end of my stay I knew I would miss the chats and walks we had as well as his unexpected insights and wisdom and the inspiration his life has become to me. Someday perhaps our paths will cross again and till then I am sure he continues to brighten his part of the world and blanket in warm hospitality other guests to the manor and his other properties.

However beautiful the photographs in this post none of them do justice to the beauty of the complete soul - nourishing experience that was Khajjiar and staying at the Deodar Manor. Oh and not to forget the icing on the cake – staying in the Pir Panjal room which has hosted… hold your breath …

...Richard Gere… This is where I swoon and sign off :)

essay on trip to khajjiar

Planning for a trip in the Heavenly Himachal Pradesh? What are the places are you going to? Shimla, Kulu, Manali? Or maybe Dharamshala and Dalhousie? So you are not going to Khajjiar? Are you hearing it for the first time? You might have heard it but not very sure of it? Well then, after you finish reading this, either you will be calling your tour operator to squeeze in Khajjiar, somehow or will be feeling hopeless that you have not heard it before. Because you might well be in the brink of missing an experience of a lifetime. The less-visited Khajjiar is surely among the top 5 places to visit during summer or winter in Himachal Pradesh. The verdant pastures of Khajjiar are saucer-shaped and the sublime and enticing image of this place is bewildering. There is nothing more satisfying than going to a beautiful place and enjoying yourself.

Where is Khajjiar in Himachal Pradesh? Where is it located?

Khajjiar is a small village which is roughly 24km from Dalhousie. Khajjiar is encircled by snow-crowned mountains on all sides. This hidden beauty in gorgeous Himachal Pradesh is one of the best off-beat destinations in the state. Khajjiar is a dreamy destination that has a combination of magnificent peaks, lucent meadows, and verdant emerald forests. This mysterious beauty sits at an elevation of 6,500 feet above sea-level. This minuscule village spreads over luscious fields, meandering soft rivers, and stunning Deodar trees. The extravagant beauty of Khajjiar captures the main qualities of the region’s topography which includes the massive Western Himalayas Alps, brook fed lake, all terminating in the foothills of Dhauladhar range. The small plateau of Khajjiar has an equally small lake right in the middle of it. Khajjiar has two floating islands in the centre of the lake which at times stays concealed by the lofty grass that develops on them.

This place is a unique blend of the ecosystem. Every piece of natural wonder in scenic Khajjiar takes pride in its self. They are the show-piece, the adornments of this magnificent spectacle that attracts visitors and leave them totally awe-struck. This luxuriant green meadow in the Chamba Valley provides a calm and serene environment in its every nook and corner. This calm and quiet destination beckons families, honeymoon couples, adventure junkies, photographers, peace finders and everybody else. Khajjiar has a mountainous terrain and even the areas which are not, i.e. the rolling meadows, Khajjiar Lake, the pastoral landscapes are viewed for hours at a stretch. “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” This quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson best applies here.

Why Khajjiar is called ‘Mini Switzerland of India’?

This invigorating place is as scenic as Switzerland itself. Such is the uncanny resemblance that Mr. Willy. T. Blazer, the then Head of Chancery of Switzerland in India acknowledged it as ‘Mini Switzerland of India’ in the year 1992. He was instrumental in constructing a Swiss-type yellow footpath signboard. He also took back a stone as memorabilia to be kept at the Swiss Parliament. On a clear sunny day, your eyes will automatically look upwards to Mount Kailash, the serrated skyline which is at times dark with forest to the crests of its notched ridges and at other times, glittering in the snow. Khajjiar is appropriately called the ‘Mini Switzerland of India.’ The key component which establishes it as ‘Mini Switzerland of India’ is no doubt the Himalayan Alps which is Khajjiar’s predominant feature. Just like the Swiss Alps, it has reached perfection in its grandeur. True to its nickname, the uprising forested spurs rise up to form the perfect match with the spectacular Himalayan Alps. The roaring clouds, whispering forests, picturesque lake are a pastoral utopia.

Khajjiar Lake

Khajjiar Lake

The impressive green pasture of Khajjiar has a little patch of a water-body right at the middle. This is the famous Khajjiar Lake. Bunches of herbs and grasses grow on this lake giving an impression of floating islands. The floating islands are the main draw of this Khajjiar Lake. This place is perfect to rejuvenate your mind and soul. The striking vista of Mount Kailash can be seen from here.

Khajjiar in Summer

The alpine summers of Khajjiar which lasts from March to June is the ideal time to visit this charming hamlet in Himachal. The temperature is quite pleasant during the summers and stays somewhere between 17 degrees to 30 degrees.

Khajjiar in Winter

Khajjiar is wreathed in snow during the Winter Months. Though it can be little tough travellers still throng to this place in the chilly winter months to enjoy its pristine beauty. It’s definitely a sight to behold during the winters. Your craving for snow will come true here.

Trump Escalates Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric With ‘Poisoning the Blood’ Comment

When asked about immigration in a recent interview, the former president used language with echoes of white supremacy and Hitler.

Former President Donald J. Trump said undocumented immigrants were “poisoning the blood of our country” in a recent interview, language with echoes of white supremacy and the racial hatreds of Adolf Hitler.

Mr. Trump made the remark in a 37-minute video interview with The National Pulse, a right-leaning website, that was posted last week. It drew broader scrutiny on Wednesday after the liberal MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan surfaced the quote in a post on X.

Other commentators went on to point out that Mr. Trump’s attack invoked a theme of Hitler’s autobiographical manifesto “Mein Kampf,” in which the Nazi Party leader railed about what he claimed was the impurity of immigrants, Jews and interracial couples.

In the interview , Mr. Trump was asked about immigration and the Southern border.

He replied: “Nobody has any idea where these people are coming from, and we know they come from prisons. We know they come from mental institutions and insane asylums. We know they’re terrorists. Nobody has ever seen anything like we’re witnessing right now. It is a very sad thing for our country. It’s poisoning the blood of our country. It’s so bad, and people are coming in with disease. People are coming in with every possible thing that you could have.”

At campaign rallies, Mr. Trump has repeated that leaders of unspecified South American countries were releasing patients from mental hospitals to send as migrants to the United States, but fact checkers have found no evidence for the claim .

Jonathan Greenblatt, the chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League, called Mr. Trump’s comments racist and xenophobic. “Insinuating that immigrants are ‘poisoning the blood of our country’ echoes nativist talking points and has the potential to cause real danger and violence,’’ Mr. Greenblatt said in a statement. “We have seen this kind of toxic rhetoric inspire real-world violence before in places like Pittsburgh and El Paso. It should have no place in our politics, period.”
