New priests ordained at the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, assigned to parishes

Portrait of Bebe Hodges

A new priest might be coming to your church.

Seven men were ordained priests for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and given their parish assignments on Saturday, the organization said in a release.

Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr, who was diagnosed with cancer this month , celebrated the Mass.

The archbishop laid his hands on the men, invoking the authority given by Christ to the apostles to make new priests, a release from the archdiocese said.

The 2024 class of priests includes the Rev. Brice Berger, the Rev. Adam Berning, the Rev. John Grusenmeyer, the Rev. Benjamin Mersch, the Rev. Matthew Montag, the Rev. Anthony Sanitato and the Rev. Jeremy Stubbs.

According to a previous release from the archdiocese, the men received at least seven years of formation for the priesthood. They graduated on May 12 from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary and School of Theology. This past year, the new priests served as transitional deacons. They've performed baptisms, assisted at marriages and preached at Mass.

This year marks the fourth consecutive year that seven men have been ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

Since 2014, 60 men have been ordained for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

News releases, cardinal blase cupich to ordain four priests for the archdiocese of chicago on saturday, may 18, 2024, at holy name cathedral.

Chicago, (May 16, 2024) – Cardinal Blase Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, will ordain four priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago at 10 a.m., on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St., Chicago. The ordination will be livestreamed on the archdiocese’s YouTube channel Catholic Chicago:  https://youtube.com/live/ZfEFA2JRpCo?feature=share .

“I welcome these four men as they begin new chapters of their lives,” said Cardinal Cupich. “Their ministry comes at a challenging time when our city and world need hope and peace. May the Lord's profound example of mercy and compassion lead them, comfort them and inspire them as they shepherd the People of God.”

Men become priests through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, a celebration rich in symbolism and tradition. By ordination, priests receive a wide variety of responsibilities, particularly celebrating the Mass and granting forgiveness of sins through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Priests also preach the Gospel, and celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Matrimony, and Anointing of the Sick. Diocesan priests make promises of life-long celibacy, prayer for the People of God, and obedience to their bishop at their ordination. It is also expected that priests will lead a life of simplicity consistent with the people they serve.

Each newly ordained priest has completed at least six years of human, spiritual, academic and pastoral formation, which included an exhaustive study of philosophy, Catholic theology, the history of the Church, and pastoral practice. As part of their seminary education, future priests are assigned to work at parishes, schools, and hospitals as they develop their capacity to be shepherds of God’s people.

“These men exhibit a particularly strong spirit of community among themselves. They began their formation at the height of the pandemic, when they learned the value of what it means for the members of a presbyterate to really know and trust one another,” said Very Reverend John Kartje, rector/president of University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. “They also saw both the graces and the challenges that parishes must negotiate under times of change and stress. This has served them well as they experienced the ongoing evolution of parish life under Renew My Church, and I am very confident that they will bring those skills and the humble spirit of Christ's leadership into the first year of their priesthood.”

Comfort My People — The priest assignment process

new assignments for priests

As is usual, a number of our parish communities will be experiencing changes because of new priest assignments in June. I want to assure you that the annual effort to come up with a slate of new assignments for priests is one of the responsibilities that challenges and humbles me as a bishop.

This is one of the responsibilities to which I give much prayer, consultation, reflection and discussion. Because of its significance, I would like to share a few thoughts concerning the assignment of a priest to a parish.

First, I want to sincerely thank our beloved priests who so willingly accept new assignments when proposed to them. I am deeply grateful to our priests who always seek to respond to the best of their ability when asked to take on a new ministry or service in a new parish community. Priests share in the priesthood of Jesus Christ, and as such, it is Jesus Christ that we preach and not ourselves. I thank them for their overwhelming willingness to respond to pastoral needs and accept new assignments.

Next, I want to sincerely thank the people of God for the affection you have for those who serve as priests. When I hear from people about the transfer of a priest serving their parish, I know that it roots itself in the love that you have for the priests who serve you and in the support that you give to your parish. I do not take these things for granted, and I am deeply grateful.

Now, let me share with you some of the more practical aspects of making priests’ assignments each year. The annual process for priests’ assignments begins during the fall months when each priest receives and completes a form that states his thoughts about retiring, if he is retirement age, or his desire to possibly remain in his current assignment or to request a possible new assignment.

The vicar for priests, Very Rev. Anthony Chandler, along with the members of Priests’ Personnel Board, receive and compile this information for discussions that take place over the course of the winter months regarding the coming summer assignments.

The Priests’ Personnel Board, with priest members from around the archdiocese, keenly familiarize themselves with the pastoral needs in archdiocesan parishes as well as the desire of each priest from the information that the priest himself provides. Along with the vicar for priests and the Priests’ Personnel Board, I spend several months discerning, discussing and praying about the best way to attempt to meet the pastoral needs of all the parishes as well as the requests of the priests. After many meetings and ongoing discussions, the Priests’ Personnel Board communicates final recommendations to me in the spring, and then I make the final decisions about the assignments.

I assure you that it is not my desire, the desire of the vicar for priests or the desire of the Priests’ Personnel Board to upset or to destabilize any parish. Our only desire is to respond to the pastoral needs of the people of God throughout the archdiocese with the priests available to provide the most comprehensive pastoral ministry to all. None of us involved in this important process takes this responsibility lightly, and we rely on the help of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit to make the best decisions that we can.

It was not so long ago that I was a pastor in a parish. I know firsthand how transitions in parish life affect parish families. I know that it challenges priests, parishioners and parish communities. I ask your prayers for all priests and parishes in transition this month as priests move to new assignments.

If you have a priest that is departing for a new assignment, I pray that you will express gratitude for his ministry. If you are receiving a new priest in your parish, I pray that you will welcome him and be open to his many gifts and approaches to pastoral ministry.

Ultimately, I fully believe that if we keep our focus on Jesus Christ, the High Priest, we can integrate these transitions in our lives, grow in relationship with one another and continue in our journey of discipleship with Jesus Christ. As I also assure you of my prayers for you, I ask your kind prayers for me.

I thought this was a great piece. It outlines a process that is prayerful, reflective, transparent and collaborative. Thank you Archbishop Fabre. Best wishes to all the priests in the diocese, especially to those moving to new assignments.

New Clergy Assignments for May and July 2023

Coat of Arms

March 20, 2023

Assignments will help support the diocese’s regional approach to parish ministry

PRESS RELEASE

CONTACT: Justin Huyck, Director of Communications; (330) 744-8451, ext. 320; [email protected]

On the weekends of March 11/12 and March 18/19, The Most Rev. David J. Bonnar, Bishop of Youngstown, announced various clergy assignments for parishes throughout the six-county diocese. In the parishes that will be receiving new priests or deacons, letters were read from Bishop Bonnar. Most of the new assignments will take effect on July 1, 2023, with some taking effect in May.

Consistent with many current assignments throughout the diocese, the new assignments reflect the Diocese of Youngstown’s regional model for ministry, with priests, deacons, and diocesan pastoral associates serving multiple parishes. Bishop Bonnar comments, “Through the hard work of our personnel board, who I consult with on assignments, we continue to navigate the shortage of priests while desiring to support parishes as they live missionary discipleship in new ways. Just as importantly, this approach allows for a more vibrant experience of parish life as we share our strengths across parishes.”

One of the features of the diocese’s regional approach to ministry and personnel assignments is the grouping of parishes who share not only priests as pastors, parochial vicars, or sacramental ministers, but also deacons and, where applicable, diocesan pastoral associates assigned to the same grouping of parishes. A diocesan pastoral associate is a lay person or deacon assigned by the bishop to the leadership team for one or more parishes. The consistent assignment of clergy and diocesan pastoral associates allows for mutual support.

Below are the assignments made in March 2023. They are effective July 1, 2023 unless otherwise noted. Previous and future assignments can be found at www.doy.org/official/
